The Milky Way's (MW) inner stellar halo contains an [Fe/H]-rich component with highly eccentric orbits, often referred to as the "last major merger." Hypotheses for the origin of this component include Gaia-Sausage/Enceladus (GSE), where the progenitor collided with the MW proto-disk 8-11 Gyr ago, and the Virgo Radial Merger (VRM), where the progenitor collided with the MW disk within the last 3 Gyr. These two scenarios make different predictions about observable structure in local phase space, because the morphology of debris depends on how long it has had to phase mix. The recently-identified phase-space folds in Gaia DR3 have positive caustic velocities, making them fundamentally different than the phase-mixed chevrons found in simulations at late times. Roughly 20\% of the stars in the prograde local stellar halo are associated with the observed caustics. Based on a simple phase-mixing model, the observed number of caustics are consistent with a merger that occurred 1--2 Gyr ago. We also compare the observed phase-space distribution to FIRE-2 Latte simulations of GSE-like mergers, using a quantitative measurement of phase mixing (2D causticality). The observed local phase-space distribution best matches the simulated data 1--2 Gyr after collision, and certainly not later than 3 Gyr. This is further evidence that the progenitor of the "last major merger" did not collide with the MW proto-disk at early times, as is thought for the GSE, but instead collided with the MW disk within the last few Gyr, consistent with the body of work surrounding the VRM.

We develop the theoretical foundation for primary objective grating (POG) telescopy. In recent years, a wide range of telescope designs that collect the light over a large grating and focus it with a secondary receiving optic that is placed at grazing exodus have been proposed by Thomas D. Ditto, and are sometimes referred to as Dittoscopes. Applications include discovery and characterization of exoplanets, discovery of near-Earth asteroids, and spectroscopic surveys of the sky. These telescopes would have small aerial mass, and therefore provide a path forward to launch large telescopes into space. Because this series of telescope designs departs from traditional telescope designs, it has been difficult to evaluate which applications are most advantageous for this design. Here, we define a new figure of merit, the "modified etendue," that characterizes the photon collection capability of a POG. It is demonstrated that the diffraction limit for observations is determined by the length of the grating. We evaluate the effects of atmospheric seeing for ground-based applications and the disambiguation of position vs. wavelength in the focal plane using a second dispersing element. We find that the chemical abundances and dynamics of APOGEE and GALAH stars in the local stellar halo are inconsistent with a scenario in which the inner halo is primarily composed of debris from a single, massive, ancient merger event, as has been proposed to explain the Gaia-Enceladus/Gaia Sausage (GSE) structure. The data contains trends of chemical composition with energy which are opposite to expectations for a single massive, ancient merger event, and multiple chemical evolution paths with distinct dynamics are present. We use a Bayesian Gaussian mixture model regression algorithm to characterize the local stellar halo, and find that the data is best fit by a model with four components. We interpret these components as the VRM, Cronus, Nereus, and Thamnos; however, Nereus and Thamnos likely represent more than one accretion event because the chemical abundance distributions of their member stars contain many peaks. Although the Cronus and Thamnos components have different dynamics, their chemical abundances suggest they may be related. We show that the distinct low and high alpha halo populations from Nissen & Schuster (2010) are explained by VRM and Cronus stars, as well as some in-situ stars. Because the local stellar halo contains multiple substructures, different popular methods of selecting GSE stars will actually select different mixtures of these substructures, which may change the apparent chemodynamic properties of the selected stars. We also find that the Splash stars in the solar region are shifted to higher v_phi and slightly lower [Fe/H] than previously reported.

Using proper motions from Gaia Early Data Release 3 (Gaia EDR 3) and radial velocities from several surveys, we identify 60 candidate high-velocity stars with total velocity greater than 75\% escape velocity that probably origin from Sagittarius dwarf spheroidal galaxy (Sgr) by orbital analysis. Sgr's gravity has little effect on the results and the Large Magellanic Cloud's gravity has non-negligible effect on only a few stars. The closest approach of these stars to the Sgr occurs when the Sgr passed its pericenter ($\sim$ 38.2 Myr ago), which suggest they were tidally stripped from the Sgr. The positions of these stars in the HR diagram and the chemical properties of 19 of them with available [Fe/H] are similar with the Sgr stream member stars. This is consistent with the assumption of their accretion origin. We fit the mass and radial profile of the Orphan-Chenab Stream's (OCS) dwarf galaxy progenitor by using turnoff stars in the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) and the Dark Energy Camera (DEC) to constrain N-body simulations of the OCS progenitor falling into the Milky Way on the 1.5 PetaFLOPS MilkyWay@home distributed supercomputer. We infer the internal structure of the OCS's progenitor under the assumption that it was a spherically symmetric dwarf galaxy comprised of a stellar system embedded in an extended dark matter halo. We optimize the evolution time, the baryonic and dark matter scale radii, and the baryonic and dark matter masses of the progenitor using a differential evolution algorithm. The likelihood score for each set of parameters is determined by comparing the simulated tidal stream to the angular distribution of OCS stars observed in the sky. We fit the total mass of the OCS's progenitor to ($2.0\pm0.3$) $\times 10^7 M_\odot$ with a mass-to-light ratio of $\gamma=73.5\pm10.6$ and ($1.1\pm0.2$)$\times10^6M_{\odot}$ within 300 pc of its center. Within the progenitor's half-light radius, we estimate total a mass of ($4.0\pm1.0$)$\times10^5M_{\odot}$. We also fit the current sky position of the progenitor's remnant to be $(\alpha,\delta)=((166.0\pm0.9)^\circ,(-11.1\pm2.5)^\circ)$ and show that it is gravitationally unbound at the present time. The measured progenitor mass is on the low end of previous measurements, and if confirmed lowers the mass range of ultrafaint dwarf galaxies. We use halo dwarf stars with photometrically determined metallicities that are located within 2 kpc of the Sun to identify local halo substructure. The kinematic properties of these stars do not indicate a single, dominant radial merger event (RME). The retrograde Virgo Radial Merger (VRM) component has [Fe/H] = -1.7. A second, non-rotating RME component we name Nereus is identified with [Fe/H] = -2.1 and has similar energy as the VRM. A possible third RME we name Cronus is identified that is co-rotating with the disk, has lower energy than the VRM, and has [Fe/H] = -1.2. We identify the Nyx Stream in the data. In addition to these substructures, we observe metal-poor halo stars ([Fe/H] ~ -2.0 and $\sigma_v$ ~ 180 km s$^{-1}$) and a disk/Splash component with lower rotational velocity than the disk and lower metallicity than typically associated with the Splash. An additional excess of halo stars with low velocity and metallicity of [Fe/H] = -1.5 could be associated with the shell of a lower energy RME or indicate that lower energy halo stars have higher metallicity. Stars which comprise the "Gaia Sausage" velocity structure are a combination of the components identified in this work.

Based on the second Gaia data release (DR2) and APOGEE (DR16) spectroscopic surveys, wedefined two kinds of star sample: high-velocity thick disk (HVTD) with $v{\phi}>90km/s$ and metal-richstellar halo (MRSH) with $v{\phi}<90km/s$. Due to high resolution spectra data from APOGEE (DR16),we can analyze accurately the element abundance distribution of HVTD and MRSH. These elementsabundance constituted a multidimensional data space, and we introduced an algorithm method forprocessing multi-dimensional data to give the result of dimensionality reduction clustering. Accordingto chemical properties analysis, we derived that some HVTD stars could origin from the thin disk,and some MRSH stars from dwarf galaxies, but those stars which have similar chemical abundancecharacteristics in both sample may form in-situ., Comment: 11 pages, 8 figures, accepted for publication in ApJ

Dwarf galaxies that come too close to larger galaxies suffer tidal disruption; the differential gravitational force between one side of the galaxy and the other serves to rip the stars from the dwarf galaxy so that they instead orbit the larger galaxy. This process produces "tidal streams" of stars, which can be found in the stellar halo of the Milky Way, as well as in halos of other galaxies. This chapter provides a general introduction to tidal streams, including the mechanism through which the streams are created, the history of how they were discovered, and the observational techniques by which they can be detected. Although Blue Horizontal Branch (BHB) stars are commonly used to trace halo substructure, the stars bluer than (g-r)<-0.3 are ignored due to the difficulty in determining their absolute magnitudes. The blue extention of the horizontal branch (HBX) includes BHB tail stars and Extreme Horizontal Branch (EHB) stars. We present a method for identifying HBX stars in the field, using spectra and photometry from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey Data Release 14 (SDSS DR14). We derive an estimate for the absolute magnitudes of BHB tail and EHB stars as a function of color, and use this relationship to calculate distances. We identify an overdensity of HBX stars that appears to trace the northern end of the Hercules-Aquila Cloud (HAC). We identify three stars that are likely part of a tidal stream, but this is not enough stars to explain the observed overdensity. Combining SDSS data with Gaia DR2 proper motions allows us to show that the orbits of the majority of the HBX stars in the overdensity are on high eccentricity orbits similar to those in the Virgo Radial Merger/Gaia-Enceladus/Gaia Sausage structure, and that the overdensity of high eccentricity orbits extends all the way to the Virgo Overdensity. We use stellar kinematics to separate the HBX stars into disk stars andhalo stars. The halo stars are primarily on highly eccentric (radial) orbits. We have developed a method for estimating the properties of the progenitor dwarf galaxy from the tidal stream of stars that were ripped from it as it fell into the Milky Way. In particular, we show that the mass and radial profile of a progenitor dwarf galaxy evolved along the orbit of the Orphan Stream, including the stellar and dark matter components, can be reconstructed from the distribution of stars in the tidal stream it produced. We use MilkyWay@home, a PetaFLOPS-scale distributed supercomputer, to optimize our dwarf galaxy parameters until we arrive at best-fit parameters. The algorithm fits the dark matter mass, dark matter radius, stellar mass, radial profile of stars, and orbital time. The parameters are recovered even though the dark matter component extends well past the half light radius of the dwarf galaxy progenitor, proving that we are able to extract information about the dark matter halos of dwarf galaxies from the tidal debris. Our simulations assumed that the Milky Way potential, dwarf galaxy orbit, and the form of the density model for the dwarf galaxy were known exactly; more work is required to evaluate the sources of systematic error in fitting real data. This method can be used to estimate the dark matter content in dwarf galaxies without the assumption of virial equilibrium that is required to estimate the mass using line-of-sight velocities. We use the second Gaia data release (Gaia DR2), combined with RAVE spectroscopic surveys, to identify the substructures in the nearby stellar halo. We select 3,845 halo stars kinematically and chemically, and determine their density distribution in energy and angular momentum space. To select the substructures from overdensities, we reshuffle the velocities and estimate their significance. Two statistically significant substructures, GR-1 and GR-2, are identified. GR-1 has a high binding energy and small $z$-angular momentum. GR-2 is metal-rich but retrograde. Based on the second Gaia data release (DR2), combined with the LAMOST and APOGEE spectroscopic surveys, we study the kinematics and metallicity distribution of the high-velocity stars that have a relative speed of at least 220 ${\rm km\ s^{-1}}$ with respect to the local standard of rest in the Galaxy. The rotational velocity distribution of the high-velocity stars with [Fe/H] $>-1.0$ dex can be well described by a two-Gaussian model, with peaks at $V_{\phi}\sim +164.2\pm0.7$ and $V_{\phi}\sim +3.0\pm0.3$ ${\rm km\ s^{-1}}$, associated with the thick disk and halo, respectively. This implies that there should exist a high-velocity thick disk (HVTD) and a metal-rich stellar halo (MRSH) in the Galaxy. The HVTD stars have the same position as the halo in the Toomre diagram and but show the same rotational velocity and metallicity as the canonical thick disk. The MRSH stars have basically the same rotational velocity, orbital eccentricity, and position in the Lindblad and Toomre diagram as the canonical halo stars, but they are more metal-rich. Furthermore, the metallicity distribution function (MDF) of our sample stars are well fitted by a four-Gaussian model, associated with the outer-halo, inner-halo, MRSH, and HVTD, respectively. We identify shell structures in the Milky Way for the first time. We find 2 shells in the Virgo Overdensity (VOD) region and 2 shells in the Hercules Aquila Cloud (HAC) region using Sloan Digital Sky Survey, Gaia, and LAMOST data. These shell stars are a subset of the substructure previously identified as the Virgo Radial Merger (VRM). Timing arguments for these shells indicate that their progenitor dwarf galaxy passed through the Galactic center 2.7 +/- 0.2 Gyr ago. Based on the time of collision, it is also possible that the VRM is related to the phenomenon that created phase-space spirals in the vertical motion of the disk and/or the Splash, and could have caused a burst of star formation in the inner disk. We analyze phase mixing in a collection of radial merger N-body simulations, and find that shell structure similar to that observed in Milky Way data disappears by 5 Gyr after collision with the Galactic center. The method used to calculate the merger time of the VRM was able to reliably recover the correct merger times for these simulations. Previous work supports the idea that the VRM and the Gaia Sausage/Gaia-Enceladus Merger are the same. However, the Gaia Sausage is widely believed to be 8--11 Gyr old. The disparate ages could be reconciled if the larger age is associated with an infall time when the progenitor crossed the virial radius; we do not constrain the time at which the progenitor became bound to the Milky Way. Alternatively, the Gaia Sausage could be younger than previously thought.

We show that Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics (SPH) simulations of dwarf galaxies interacting with a Milky Way-like disk produce moving groups in the simulated stellar disk. We analyze three different simulations: one that includes dwarf galaxies that mimic the Large Magellanic Cloud, Small Magellanic Cloud and the Sagittarius dwarf spheroidal; another with a dwarf galaxy that orbits nearly in the plane of the Milky Way disk; and a null case that does not include a dwarf galaxy interaction. We present a new algorithm to find large moving groups in the $V_R, V_\phi$ plane in an automated fashion that allows us to compare velocity sub-structure in different simulations, at different locations, and at different times. We find that there are significantly more moving groups formed in the interacting simulations than in the isolated simulation. A number of dwarf galaxies are known to orbit the Milky Way, with at least one known to have had a close pericenter approach. Our analysis of simulations here indicates that dwarf galaxies like those orbiting our Galaxy produce large moving groups in the disk. Our analysis also suggests that some of the moving groups in the Milky Way may have formed due to dynamical interactions with perturbing dwarf satellites. Base on about 4,500 large tangential velocity ($V_\mathrm{tan}>0.75V_\mathrm{esc}$) with high-precision proper motions and $5\sigma$ parallaxes in Gaia DR2 5D information derived from parallax and proper motion, we identify more than 600 high velocity stars with $50\%$ unbound probability. Of these, 28 nearby (less than 6 kpc) late-type Hypervelocity stars (HVSs) with over $99\%$ possibility of unbound are discovered. In order to search for the unbound stars from the full Gaia DR2 6D phase space information derived from parallax, proper motion and radial velocity, we also identify 28 stars from the total velocity ($V_\mathrm{gc}>0.75V_\mathrm{esc}$) that have probabilities greater than $50\%$ of being unbound from the Galaxy. Of these, only three have a nearly $99\%$ probabilities of being unbound. On the whole HVSs subsample, there is 12 sources reported by other surveys. We study the spatial distribution of angular positions and angular separation of HVSs. We find the unbound HVSs are spatially anisotropic that is most significant in the Galactic longitude at more than $3\sigma$ level, and lower unbound probability HVSs are systematically more isotropic. The spatial distribution can reflect the origin of HVSs and we discuss the possible origin link with the anisotropy., Comment: 10 pages, 7 figures, accepted for publication in ApJS

We suggest that the Virgo Overdensity (VOD) of stars in the stellar halo is the result of a radial dwarf galaxy merger that we call the Virgo Radial Merger. Because the dwarf galaxy passed very near to the Galactic center, the debris has a large range of energies but nearly zero $L_z$ angular momentum. The debris appears to extend from 5 to 50 kpc from the Sun in the Virgo region. We connect different parts of this merger debris to the Perpendicular and Parallel Streams (the Virgo Stellar Stream is associated with either or both of these streams), the Hercules-Aquila Cloud (HAC), and possibly the Eridanus Phoenix Overdensity (EriPhe). This radial merger can explain the majority of the observed moving groups of RR Lyrae and blue horizontal branch stars that have previously been identified in Virgo. This merger also produces debris in the Solar neighborhood similar to that identified as the Gaia-Enceladus or it Gaia-sausage merger. We selected blue horizontal branch (BHB) stars within the expected distance range and sky position of the Hermus Stream from Data Release 10 of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey. We identify a moving group of $19$ BHB stars that are concentrated within two degrees of the Hermus Stream, between $10$ and $14$ kpc from the Sun. The concentration in velocity is inconsistent with a Gaussian distribution with 98% confidence (2.33 sigma).The stars in the moving group have line-of-sight velocities of v$_{\rm gsr} \sim 50$ km s$^{-1}$, a velocity dispersion of $\sigma_v\lesssim11$ km s$^{-1}$, a line-of-sight depth of $\sim 1$ kpc, and a metallicity of [Fe/H] $=-2.1 \pm 0.4$. The best-fit orbit has a perigalacticon of $\sim4$ kpc, apogalacticon of $\sim 17$ kpc, orbital period of $\sim247$ Myr, eccentricity $e = 0.62$, and inclination $i \sim75^\circ$ from $b=90^\circ$. The BHB stars in the stream are estimated to be $12$ Gyr old. An N-body simulation of a mass-follows-light ultrafaint dwarf galaxy with mass $10^6M_{\odot}$ and radius $40$ pc is consistent with the observed properties. The properties of the identified moving group of 19 BHB stars are close enough to those of the Hermus Stream (which is traced predominantly in turnoff stars) that we find it likely that they are associated. If that is the case, then our orbit fit would imply that there is no relationship between the Hermus and Phoenix streams, as previously proposed., Comment: 18 pages, 7 figures, Published in MNRAS

Based on the second Gaia data release (Gaia DR2) and spectroscopy from the Large Sky Area Multi-Object Fiber Spectroscopic Telescope (LAMOST) Data, we identified 20,089 halo stars kinematically and chemically. The halo streams in the solar neighborhood could be detected in the space of energy and angular momentum. We reshuffle the velocities of these stars to determine the significance of substructure. Finally, we identify 4 statistically significant substructures that are labeled GL-1 through 4. Among these substructures, GL-1 is previously known stream ("N2" stream) and the rest 3 substructures are new. Based on the second Gaia data (Gaia DR2) and spectroscopy from the LAMOST Data Release 5, we defined the high-velocity (HiVel) stars sample as those stars with $v_{\mathrm{gc}} > 0.85 v_{\mathrm{esc}}$, and derived the final sample of 24 HiVel stars with stellar astrometric parameters and radial velocities. Most of the HiVel stars are metal-poor and $\alpha$-enhanced. In order to further explore the origin of these HiVel stars, we traced the backwards orbits of each HiVel star in the Galactic potential to derive probability parameters which are used to classify these HiVel stars. Of these, 5 stars are from the tidal debris of disrupted dwarf galaxy and 19 stars are runaway-star candidates which originate from the stellar disk., Comment: 6 pages, 5 figures, accepted for publication in ApJL

We propose and test a method for applying statistical photometric parallax to main sequence turn off (MSTO) stars in the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS). Using simulated data, we show that if our density model is similar to the actual density distribution of our data, we can reliably determine the density model parameters of three major substructures in the Milky Way halo using the computational resources available on MilkyWay@home (a twenty parameter fit). We fit the stellar density in SDSS stripe 19 with a smooth stellar spheroid component and three major streams. One of these streams is consistent with the Sagittarius tidal stream at $21.1$ kpc away, one is consistent with the trailing tail of the Sagittarius tidal stream in the north Galactic cap at $48$ kpc away, and one is possibly part of the Virgo Overdensity at $6$ kpc away. We find the one sigma widths of these three streams to be $1.0$ kpc, $17.6$ kpc, and $6.1$ kpc, respectively. The width of the trailing tail is extremely wide ($41$ kpc full width at half maximum). This large width could have implications for the shape of the Milky Way dark matter halo. The width of the Virgo Overdensity-like structure is consistent with what we might expect for a "cloud"-like structure; analysis of additional stripes of data are needed to outline the full extent of this structure and confirm its association with the Virgo Overdensity.

Stellar halo substructures were identified using statistical photometric parallax of blue main sequence turnoff stars from fourteen Sloan Digital Sky Survey stripes in the north Galactic cap. Four structures are consistent with previous measurements of the Sagittarius dwarf tidal stream: the leading tail, the "bifurcated" stream, the trailing tail, and Stream C. The stellar overdensity in Virgo, about 15 kpc from the Sun, could arise from the crossing of the Parallel Stream and a new, candidate stream dubbed the Perpendicular Stream. The data suggests the presence of a wide stream near NGC 5466, with a distance of 5 to 15 kpc. Measurements of the flattening of the smooth stellar halo from the fourteen stripes average q=0.58, with a dispersion of 0.04.

Based on the first Gaia data release and spectroscopy from the LAMOST Data Release 4, we study the kinematics and chemistry of the local halo stars. The halo stars are identified kinematically with a relative speed of at least 220 km s$^{-1}$ with respect to the local standard of rest. In total, 436 halo stars are identified. From this halo sample, 16 high velocity (HiVel) stars are identified. We studied the metallicity and [$\alpha$/Fe] distribution of these HiVel stars. Though most of HiVel stars are metal-poor, there are several stars that have metallicity above $-0.5$ dex. To understand the origin of high velocity stars, we evolve the trajectory of the star backwards along the orbit in our adopted Galaxy potential model to determine the orbital parameters and assess whether the star could have originated in the Galactic center. We found that some high velocity stars could have originated from the Galactic center, but other stars were probably kicked up from the Galactic disk., Comment: 9 pages, 6 figures, accepted for publication in ApJ

We study the metallicity distribution and kinematic properties of 4,680 A/F/G/K-type giant stars with $|z|>$ 5 kpc selected from the LAMOST spectroscopic survey. The metallicity distribution of giant stars with 5 $<|z|\leqslant$ 15 kpc can be described by a three-peak Gaussian model with peaks at [Fe/H] $\sim-0.6\pm0.1$, $-1.2\pm0.3$ and $-2.0\pm0.2$, corresponding to the ratio of 19$\%$, 74$\%$ and 7$\%$, respectively. The $\rm{[\alpha/Fe]}$ is used to associate the three peaks with the thick disk, inner-halo and outer-halo components of the Galaxy. The metallicity distribution of these giant stars, which is fit with Gaussians corresponding to the three components, show a growing fraction of inner-halo component and declining fraction of the thick-disk component with increasing distance from the Galactic plane. Adopting a galaxy potential model, we also derive the orbital parameters of the sample stars, such as orbit eccentricity and rotation velocity. The peak values of derived orbital eccentricity for stars covering different metallicity regions maintain $e\sim$ 0.75, independent of height above the plane, within the range 5$<|z|<$ 15 kpc. An oscillating vertical displacement of the Milky Way, with a wavelength of about 8 kpc and and amplitude of about 100 pc (increasing with distance from the Galactic center) is observed towards the Galactic anticenter. These oscillations are thought to be the result of disk perturbations from dwarf satellites of the Milky Way. We confirm, quantify, and provide a table of the coherent velocity substructure of the Milky Way disk within 2 kpc of the Sun towards the Galactic anticenter, with 0.2 kpc resolution. We use the radial velocities of ~340,000 F-type stars obtained with the Guoshoujing Telescope (also known as the Large Sky Area Multi-Object Fiber Spectroscopic Telescope, LAMOST), and proper motions derived from the PPMXL catalog. The PPMXL proper motions have been corrected to remove systematic errors by subtracting the average proper motions of galaxies and QSOs that have been confirmed in the LAMOST spectroscopic survey, and that are within 2.5 degrees of the star's position. We provide the resulting table of systematic offsets derived from the PPMXL proper motion measurements of extragalactic objects identified in the LAMOST spectroscopic survey. Using the corrected phase- space stellar sample, we find statistically significant deviations in the bulk disk velocity of 20 km/s or more in the three dimensional velocities of Galactic disk stars. The bulk velocity varies significantly over length scales of half a kpc or less. The rotation velocity of the disk increases by 20 km/s from the Sun's position to 1.5 kpc outside the solar circle. Disk stars in the second quadrant, within 1 kpc of the Sun, are moving radially towards the Galactic center and vertically towards a point a few tenths of a kpc above the Galactic plane; looking down on the disk, the stars appear to move in a circular streaming motion with a radius of order 1 kpc., Comment: 20 pages, 13 figures, accepted by ApJ. v2 - Fixed typo in title and added two references

The radial number density and flattening of the Milky Way's stellar halo is measured with $\mathrm{5351}$ metal-poor ([Fe/H]$<-1$) K giants from LAMOST DR3, using a nonparametric method which is model independent and largely avoids the influence of halo substucture. The number density profile is well described by a single power law with index $5.03^{+0.64}_{-0.64}$, and flattening that varies with radius. The stellar halo traced by LAMOST K giants is more flattened at smaller radii, and becomes nearly spherical at larger radii. The flattening, $q$, is about 0.64, 0.8, 0.96 at $r=15$, 20 and 30 kpc (where $r=\sqrt{R^2+\left[Z/q\left(r\right)\right]^2}$), respectively. Moreover, the leading arm of the Sagittarius dwarf galaxy tidal stream in the north, and the trailing arm in the south, are significant in the residual map of density distribution. We present a statistical method to derive the stellar density profiles of the Milky Way from spectroscopic survey data, taking into account selection effects. We assume that the selection function of the spectroscopic survey is based on photometric colors and magnitudes and possibly altered during observations and data reductions. Then the underlying selection function for a line-of-sight can be well recovered by comparing the distribution of the spectroscopic stars in a color-magnitude plane with that of the photometric dataset. Subsequently, the stellar density profile along a line-of-sight can be derived from the spectroscopically measured stellar density profile multiplied by the selection function. The method is validated using Galaxia mock data with two different selection functions. We demonstrate that the derived stellar density profiles well reconstruct the true ones not only for the full targets, but also for the sub-populations selected from the full dataset. Finally, the method is applied to map the density profiles for the Galactic disk and halo, respectively, using the LAMOST RGB stars. The Galactic disk extends to about R=19 kpc, where the disk still contributes about 10% to the total stellar surface density. Beyond this radius, the disk smoothly transitions to the halo without any truncation, bending, or broken. Moreover, no over-density corresponding to the Monoceros ring is found in the Galactic anti-center direction. The disk shows moderate north-south asymmetry at radii larger than 12 kpc. On the other hand, the R-Z tomographic map directly shows that the stellar halo is substantially oblate within a Galactocentric radius of 20 kpc and gradually becomes nearly spherical beyond 30 kpc., Comment: 27 pages, 18 figures, accepted by Research in Astronomy and Astrophysics

We report two new tidal debris nearby the Sagittarius (Sgr) tidal stream in the north Galactic cap identified from the M giant stars in LAMOST DR2 data. The M giant stars with sky area of $210^\circ<$\Lambda$<290^\circ$, distance of 10--20kpc, and [Fe/H]$<-0.75$ show clear bimodality in velocity distribution. We denote the two peaks as Vel-3+83 for the one within mean velocity of -3kms$^{-1}$ with respect to that of the well observed Sgr leading tail at the same $\Lambda$ and Vel+162+26 for the other one with mean velocity of 162kms$^{-1}$ with respect to the Sgr leading tail. Although the projected $\Lambda$--$V_{gar}$ relation of Vel-3+83 is very similar to the Sgr leading tail, the opposite trend in $\Lambda$--distance relation against the Sgr leading tail suggests Vel-3+83 has a different 3D direction of motion with any branch of the simulated Sgr tidal stream from Law & Majewski. Therefore, we propose it to be a new tidal debris not related to the Sgr stream. Similarly, the another substructure Vel+162+26, which is the same one as the NGC group discovered by Chou et al., also moves toward a different direction with the Sgr stream, implying that it may have different origin with the Sgr tidal stream., Comment: 18 pages, 7 figures, Research in Astronomy and Astrophysics accepted

We derive the fraction of substructure in the Galactic halo using a sample of over 10,000 spectroscopically-confirmed halo giant stars from the LAMOST spectroscopic survey. By observing 100 synthetic models along each line of sight with the LAMOST selection function in that sky area, we statistically characterize the expected halo populations. We define as SHARDS (Stellar Halo Accretion Related Debris Structures) any stars in >3-sigma excesses above the model predictions. We find that at least 10% of the Milky Way halo stars from LAMOST are part of SHARDS. By running our algorithm on smooth halos observed with the LAMOST selection function, we show that the LAMOST data contain excess substructure over all Galactocentric radii R_GC < 40 kpc, beyond what is expected due to statistical fluctuations and incomplete sampling of a smooth halo. The level of substructure is consistent with the fraction of stars in SHARDS in model halos created entirely from accreted satellites. Using a spectroscopically confirmed sample of M-giants, M-dwarfs and quasars from the LAMOST survey, we assess how well WISE $\&$ 2MASS color-cuts can be used to select M-giant stars. The WISE bands are very efficient at separating M-giants from M-dwarfs and we present a simple classification that can produce a clean and relatively complete sample of M-giants. We derive a new photometric relation to estimate the metallicity for M-giants, calibrated using data from the APOGEE survey. We find a strong correlation between the $(W1-W2)$ color and $\rm [M/H]$, where almost all of the scatter is due to photometric uncertainties. We show that previous photometric distance relations, which are mostly based on stellar models, may be biased and devise a new empirical distance relation, investigating trends with metallicity and star formation history. Given these relations, we investigate the properties of M-giants in the Sagittarius stream. The offset in the orbital plane between the leading and trailing tails is reproduced and, by identifying distant M-giants in the direction of the Galactic anti-center, we confirm that the previously detected debris in the outer halo is the apocenter of the trailing tail. We also find tentative evidence supporting an existing overdensity near the leading tail in the Northern Galactic hemisphere, possibly an extension to the trailing tail (so-called Branch C). We have measured the metallicity distribution along the stream, finding a clear metallicity offset between the leading and trailing tails, in agreement with models for the stream formation. We present a method to estimate distances to stars with spectroscopically derived stellar parameters. The technique is a Bayesian approach with likelihood estimated via comparison of measured parameters to a grid of stellar isochrones, and returns a posterior probability density function for each star's absolute magnitude. This technique is tailored specifically to data from the Large Sky Area Multi-object Fiber Spectroscopic Telescope (LAMOST) survey. Because LAMOST obtains roughly 3000 stellar spectra simultaneously within each ~5-degree diameter "plate" that is observed, we can use the stellar parameters of the observed stars to account for the stellar luminosity function and target selection effects. This removes biasing assumptions about the underlying populations, both due to predictions of the luminosity function from stellar evolution modeling, and from Galactic models of stellar populations along each line of sight. Using calibration data of stars with known distances and stellar parameters, we show that our method recovers distances for most stars within ~20%, but with some systematic overestimation of distances to halo giants. We apply our code to the LAMOST database, and show that the current precision of LAMOST stellar parameters permits measurements of distances with ~40% error bars. MilkyWay@home is a volunteer computing project that allows people from every country in the world to volunteer their otherwise idle processors to Milky Way research. Currently, more than 25,000 people (150,000 since November 9, 2007) contribute about half a PetaFLOPS of computing power to our project. We currently run two types of applications: one application fits the spatial density profile of tidal streams using statistical photometric parallax, and the other application finds the N-body simulation parameters that produce tidal streams that best match the measured density profile of known tidal streams. The stream fitting application is well developed and is producing published results. The Sagittarius dwarf leading tidal tail has been fit, and the algorithm is currently running on the trailing tidal tail and bifurcated pieces. We will soon have a self-consistent model for the density of the smooth component of the stellar halo and the largest tidal streams. The $N$-body application has been implemented for fitting dwarf galaxy progenitor properties only, and is in the testing stages. We use an Earth-Mover Distance method to measure goodness-of-fit for density of stars along the tidal stream. In determining the distances to stars within the Milky Way galaxy, one often uses photometric or spectroscopic parallax. In these methods, the type of each individual star is determined, and the absolute magnitude of that star type is compared with the measured apparent magnitude to determine individual distances. In this article, we define the term statistical photometric parallax, in which statistical knowledge of the absolute magnitudes of stellar populations is used to determine the underlying density distributions of those stars. This technique has been used to determine the density distribution of the Milky Way stellar halo and its component tidal streams, using very large samples of stars from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey. Most recently, the volunteer computing platform MilkyWay@home has been used to find the best fit model parameters for the density of these halo stars., Comment: 8 pages, two figures. We present a census of the 12,060 spectra of blue objects ($(g-r)_0<-0.25$) in the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) Data Release 8 (DR8). As part of the data release, all of the spectra were cross-correlated with 48 template spectra of stars, galaxies and QSOs to determine the best match. We compared the blue spectra by eye to the templates assigned in SDSS DR8. 10,856 of the objects matched their assigned template, 170 could not be classified due to low signal-to-noise (S/N), and 1034 were given new classifications. We identify 7458 DA white dwarfs, 1145 DB white dwarfs, 273 rarer white dwarfs (including carbon, DZ, DQ, and magnetic), 294 subdwarf O stars, 648 subdwarf B stars, 679 blue horizontal branch stars, 1026 blue stragglers, 13 cataclysmic variables, 129 white dwarf - M dwarf binaries, 36 objects with spectra similar to DO white dwarfs, 179 QSOs, and 10 galaxies. We provide two tables of these objects, sample spectra that match the templates, figures showing all of the spectra that were grouped by eye, and diagnostic plots that show the positions, colors, apparent magnitudes, proper motions, etc. for each classification. We quantify and correct systematic errors in PPMXL proper motions using extragalactic sources from the first two LAMOST data releases and the Veron-Cetty & Veron Catalog of Quasars. Although the majority of the sources are from the Veron catalog, LAMOST makes important contributions in regions that are not well-sampled by previous catalogs, particularly at low Galactic latitudes and in the south Galactic cap. We show that quasars in PPMXL have measureable and significant proper motions, which reflect the systematic zero-point offsets present in the catalog. We confirm the global proper motion shifts seen by Wu, Ma, & Zhou (2011), and additionally find smaller-scale fluctuations of the QSO-derived corrections to an absolute frame. We present a support vector machine classifier to identify the K giant stars from the LAMOST survey directly using their spectral line features. The completeness of the identification is about 75% for tests based on LAMOST stellar parameters. The contamination in the identified K giant sample is lower than 2.5%. Applying the classification method to about 2 million LAMOST spectra observed during the pilot survey and the first year survey, we select 298,036 K giant candidates. The metallicities of the sample are also estimated with uncertainty of $0.13\sim0.29$\,dex based on the equivalent widths of Mg$_{\rm b}$ and iron lines. A Bayesian method is then developed to estimate the posterior probability of the distance for the K giant stars, based on the estimated metallicity and 2MASS photometry. The synthetic isochrone-based distance estimates have been calibrated using 7 globular clusters with a wide range of metallicities. The uncertainty of the estimated distance modulus at $K=11$\,mag, which is the median brightness of the K giant sample, is about 0.6\,mag, corresponding to $\sim30$% in distance. As a scientific verification case, the trailing arm of the Sagittarius stream is clearly identified with the selected K giant sample. Moreover, at about 80\,kpc from the Sun, we use our K giant stars to confirm a detection of stream members near the apo-center of the trailing tail. These rediscoveries of the features of the Sagittarius stream illustrate the potential of the LAMOST survey for detecting substructures in the halo of the Milky Way., Comment: 24 pages, 20 figures, submitted to ApJ

We report the first hypervelocity star (HVS) discovered from the LAMOST spectroscopic survey. It is a B-type star with a heliocentric radial velocity about 620 km/s, which projects to a Galactocentric radial velocity component of ~477 km/s. With a heliocentric distance of ~13 kpc and an apparent magnitude of ~13 mag, it is the nearest bright HVS currently known. With a mass of ~9Msun, it is one of the three most massive HVSs discovered so far. The star is clustered on the sky with many other known HVSs, with the position suggesting a possible connection to Galactic center structures. With the current poorly-determined proper motion, a Galactic center origin of this HVS remains consistent with the data at the 1sigma level, while a disk run-away origin cannot be excluded. We find that Galactic disk stars near the anticenter exhibit velocity asymmetries in both the Galactocentric radial and vertical components across the mid-plane as well as azimuthally. These findings are based on LAMOST spectroscopic velocities for a sample of ~400,000 F-type stars, combined with proper motions from the PPMXL catalog for which we have derived corrections to the zero points based in part on spectroscopically discovered galaxies and QSOs from LAMOST. In the region within 2 kpc outside the Sun's radius and +/-2 kpc from the Galactic midplane, we show that stars above the plane exhibit net outward radial motions with downward vertical velocities, while stars below the plane have roughly the opposite behavior. We trace the Cetus Polar Stream (CPS) with blue horizontal branch (BHB) and red giant stars (RGBs) from Data Release 8 of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS DR8). Using a larger dataset than was available previously, we are able to refine the measured distance and velocity to this tidal debris star stream in the south Galactic cap. Assuming the tidal debris traces the progenitor's orbit, we fit an orbit to the CPS and find that the stream is confined between ~24-36 kpc on a rather polar orbit inclined 87 degrees to the Galactic plane. The eccentricity of the orbit is 0.20, and the period ~700 Myr. If we instead matched N-body simulations to the observed tidal debris, these orbital parameters would change by 10% or less. The CPS stars travel in the opposite direction to those from the Sagittarius tidal stream in the same region of the sky. Through N-body models of satellites on the best-fitting orbit, and assuming that mass follows light, we show that the stream width, line-of-sight depth, and velocity dispersion imply a progenitor of at least 10^8 solar masses. However, the density of stars along the stream requires either a disruption time on the order of one orbit, or a stellar population that is more centrally concentrated than the dark matter. We suggest that an ultra-faint dwarf galaxy progenitor could reproduce a large stream width and velocity dispersion without requiring a very recent deflection of the progenitor into its current orbit. We find that most Cetus stars have metallicities of -2.5 < [Fe/H] < -2.0, similar to the observed metallicities of the ultra-faint dwarfs. A total of $\sim640,000$ objects from LAMOST pilot survey have been publicly released. In this work, we present a catalog of DA white dwarfs from the entire pilot survey. We outline a new algorithm for the selection of white dwarfs by fitting S\'ersic profiles to the Balmer H$\beta$, H$\gamma$ and H$\delta$ lines of the spectra, and calculating the equivalent width of the CaII K line. 2964 candidates are selected by constraining the fitting parameters and the equivalent width of CaII K line. All the spectra of candidates are visually inspected. We identify 230 (59 of them are already in Villanova and SDSS WD catalog) DA white dwarfs, 20 of which are DA white dwarfs with non-degenerate companions. In addition, 128 candidates are classified as DA white dwarf/subdwarfs, which means the classifications are ambiguous. The result is consistent with the expected DA white dwarf number estimated based on the LEGUE target selection algorithm., Comment: 44 pages, 18 figures

We measure the spatial density of F turnoff stars in the Sagittarius dwarf tidal stream, from Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) data, using statistical photometric parallax. We find a set of continuous, consistent parameters that describe the leading Sgr stream's position, direction, and width for 15 stripes in the North Galactic Cap, and 3 stripes in the South Galactic Cap. We produce a catalog of stars that has the density characteristics of the dominant leading Sgr tidal stream that can be compared with simulations. We find that the width of the leading (North) tidal tail is consistent with recent triaxial and axisymmetric halo model simulations. The density along the stream is roughly consistent common disruption models in the North, but possibly not in the South. We explore the possibility that one or more of the dominant Sgr streams has been mis-identified, and that one or more of the `bifurcated' pieces is the real Sgr tidal tail, but we do not reach definite conclusions. If two dwarf progenitors are assumed, fits to the planes of the dominant and `bifurcated' tidal tails favor an association of the Sgr dwarf spheroidal galaxy with the dominant Southern stream and the `bifurcated' stream in the North. In the North Galactic Cap, the best fit Hernquist density profile for the smooth component of the stellar halo is oblate, with a flattening parameter q = 0.53, and a scale length of r_0 = 6.73. The Southern data for both the tidal debris and the smooth component of the stellar halo do not match the model fits to the North, although the stellar halo is still overwhelmingly oblate. We report the kinematic discovery of the Pisces Stellar Stream (PSS), at Galactic longitude of roughly l=135 degrees and longitude between -39 < b < -36 deg. We originally identified this halo substructure from velocities of red giant branch stars in Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) Data Release 8, and confirmed its presence in turnoff stars from SDSS photometric data. The PSS is a narrow, kinematically cold tidal stream, with a velocity dispersion of 8 km/s. Its metallicity is [Fe/H]=-2.2, with ~0.3 dex dispersion. The color-magnitude signature of the stream turnoff, combined with our measured metallicity, places the PSS at a distance of 35+/-3 kpc. The Pisces Stellar Stream is the same as the previously announced "Triangulum stream" and part of the proposed "stream a". We confirm that there are at least three separate low-latitude over-densities of blue F turnoff stars near the Milky Way anti-center: the Monoceros Ring, the Anti-Center Stream (ACS), and the Eastern Banded Structure (EBS). There might also be a small number of normal thick disk stars at the same location. The ACS is a tilted component that extends to higher Galactic latitude at lower Galactic longitude, 10 kpc from the Sun towards the anti-center. It has a sharp cutoff on the high latitude side. Distance, velocity, and proper motion measurements are consistent with previous orbit fits. The mean metallicity is [Fe/H]$=-0.96 \pm 0.03$, which is lower than the thick disk and Monoceros Ring. The Monoceros Ring is a higher density substructure that is present at $15\arcdeg

We outline the design of the dark nights portion of the LAMOST Pilot Survey, which began observations in October 2011. In particular, we focus on Milky Way stellar candidates that are targeted for the LEGUE (LAMOST Experiment for Galactic Understanding and Exploration) survey. We discuss the regions of sky in which spectroscopic candidates were selected, and the motivations for selecting each of these sky areas. Some limitations due to the unique design of the telescope are discussed, including the requirement that a bright (V < 8) star be placed at the center of each plate for wavefront sensing and active optics corrections. The target selection categories and scientific goals motivating them are briefly discussed, followed by a detailed overview of how these selection functions were realized. We describe a general target selection algorithm that is applicable to any survey in which the number of available candidates is much larger than the number of objects to be observed. This routine aims to achieve a balance between a smoothly-varying, well-understood selection function and the desire to preferentially select certain types of targets. Some target-selection examples are shown that illustrate different possibilities of emphasis functions. Although it is generally applicable, the algorithm was developed specifically for the LAMOST Experiment for Galactic Understanding and Exploration (LEGUE) survey that will be carried out using the Chinese Guo Shou Jing Telescope. In particular, this algorithm was designed for the portion of LEGUE targeting the Galactic halo, in which we attempt to balance a variety of science goals that require stars at fainter magnitudes than can be completely sampled by LAMOST. We describe the current plans for a spectroscopic survey of millions of stars in the Milky Way galaxy using the Guo Shou Jing Telescope (GSJT, formerly the Large Area Multi-Object Spectroscopic Telescope - LAMOST). The survey will obtain spectra for 2.5 million stars brighter than $r<19$ during dark/grey time, and 5 million stars brighter than $r<17$ or $J<16$ on nights that are moonlit or have low transparency. The survey will begin in fall of 2012, and will run for at least four years. The telescope design constrains the optimal declination range for observations to $10^\circ<\delta<50^\circ$, and site conditions lead to an emphasis on stars in the direction of the Galactic anticenter. The survey is divided into three parts with different target selection strategies: disk, anticenter, and spheroid. The resulting dataset will be used to study the merger history of the Milky Way, the substructure and evolution of the disks, the nature of the first generation of stars through identification of the lowest metallicity stars, and star formation through study of open clusters and the OB associations.
