Abstract

The localized buoyancy heat transfer characteristics from open cavities are studied for a variety of cavity sizes, initial wall temperatures and inclined angles. The results have showed that the nonisothermal cavity heat transfer is similar to that of an isothermal cavity with the same average Rayleigh number.

Abstract

A unique set of liquid film thickness and pressure drop data has been obtained for horizontal, annular flow of air and water through round, square and triangular tube using a noninvasive, optical liquid film thickness measurement system. In the square and triangular tubes, the liquid film was thinned in the corners, indicating an effect of turbulent secondary flows in these geometries. In addition, when the film thickness is nondimensionalized using a friction velocity based on the total pressure drop, it is found that virtually all the data lie below [h.sup.+] = 35 and that dryout occurs at approximately [h.sup.+] = 5. The two-phase friction factor for the annular flows examined in all the tubes can be correlated using the Lockhart-Martinelli parameter, [X.sub.tt], when adjustments are made for the hydraulic diameters of the nonround tubes.

Abstract

This paper develops a liquid film symmetry correlation and a liquid film thickness distribution model for horizontal annular gas-liquid pipe flows. The symmetry correlation builds on the work of Williams et al. (1996) (Droplet Flux Distributions and Entrainment in Horizontal Gas-Liquid Flows,' Int. J. Multiphase Flow, Vol. 22, pp. 1-18). A new correlating parameter is presented. The liquid film thickness model is based on the work of Laurinat et al. (1985) (Film Thickness Distribution for Gas-Liquid Annular Flow in a Horizontal Pipe,' PhysicoChem. Hydrodynam., Vol. 6, pp. 179-195). The circumferential momentum equation is simplified to a balance between the normal Reynolds stress in the film's circumferential direction and the circumferential component of the weight of the film. A model for the normal Reynolds stress in the circumferential direction is proposed. The symmetry correlation is used to close the model equations. The model is valid for films with disturbance waves, and is shown to be applicable to air-water flows over a range of conditions from low velocity asymmetric to high velocity symmetric annular flows. 24. Experimental Measurement of Oil Hold-up During Refrigerant Condensation and Evaporation in Two Phase Flow

Abstract

This paper presents the effects of heat transfer on oil hold-up in smooth, axially finned, and 18° helically finned 8.915mm I.D. horizontal tubes under evaporation and condensation conditions with a R134a /ISO32 polyol ester refrigerant oil mixture. Heat fluxes ranging from 4000 to 6000 W/m2 were applied through a water jacket. The tests were conducted at a saturation temperature of 25° C, at mass fluxes of 100 to 300 kg/m2 -s, and a range of average qualities from 20-95%, oil flow concentration varied from 3-5.5%. Oil hold-up is observed to reach a minimum value in the mid-range qualities, but increases at higher qualities. In general, the enhanced tubes exhibit higher oil hold-up compared to the smooth tube, but enhanced tube trends differ between condensation and evaporation based on enhancement. The addition of oil is found to decrease condensation heat transfer while increasing evaporative heat transfer at lower and mid-range qualities.
