27. Designing a Circular Economy for the Brewing Industry: Pyrolysis-Based Biochar Production from Brewing Waste Streams and Relative Greenhouse Gas Assessment

Abstract

In 2020, global beer production reached a staggering volume of 1.82 trillion hectoliters, resulting in the generation of 36.4 million metric tons of brewers spent grain (BSG) (Zeko-Pivač et al. 2022). BSG primarily consists of the husk, pericarp, and seed coats of barley, making it a highly fibrous material. Trace amounts of silica, polyphenols, insoluble protein, and oils may also be present (Mussatto et al. 2006). The water content of BSG ranges from 60-90%; which allows naturally present microbes spoil the material within a few months of cold, sealed storage and within days of room temperature sealed or open air storage (Briggs et al. 2004; Mallen & Najdanovic-Visak 2018). The water content also contributes to the weight of BSG, increasing transportation costs and resource demand for disposing grain offsite. Traditionally, brewers donate their BSG to farmers as animal feed, however there is growing interest in alternative opportunities to valorize the grain. This research first provides an overview of the current BSG-derived products on the market, including dog treats, compound extraction, industrial materials, and beyond. Subsequently, it evaluates a biorefinery model which converts BSG into biochar using waste caustic material from the brewing process, specifically considering optimization of each step in the protocol to produce a biochar product. The ideal production parameters were found to be 1 day of soaking BSG in caustic at a dosage rate of ≤ 5 moles per 100 g unprocessed BSG at ambient temperature, followed by draining of the liquid fraction, drying of the BSG until constant weight, grinding until uniform particle size, and pyrolysis at 700 °C with a heating rate of 5 °C/min, holding the sample for at least 1 hour of residence time with constant inert gas flow throughout the heating and cooling process. The resulting biochar was appropriate for water filtration or soil amendment systems within the brewing industry (assuming further processing), which would allow brewers to build circular economy model. The proposed method was then evaluated via a greenhouse gas (GHG) assessment, to determine the efficacy of implementing this system in industry. The findings of this study concluded that landfilling BSG released nearly 3 kg CO2e per kg unprocessed BSG, while processing BSG into biochar at the lab scale resulted in lower emissions of 1.175 kg CO2e per kg unprocessed BSG. Based on these results, it is strongly recommended that BSG is diverted from landfills and utilized in more environmentally sustainable ways, such as through biochar production, composting, or a relative biorefinery process. By adopting a circular economy model for BSG, breweries can contribute to resource efficiency, waste reduction and the creation of sustainable value chains.

Abstract

Public campaigns offer an opportunity to prevent child sexual abuse by raising awareness and promoting help available to bystanders, victims, and those at risk of perpetrating the abuse. This paper explores the impact of The Lucy Faithfull Foundation's 'Stop It Now!' campaign in the UK (2015–2018) on help-seeking. Helpline calls (11,190 unique callers), website analytics (109,432 new website visitors) and three website-hosted surveys (N = 252) provided data on help-seeking, awareness, and self-reported behavior. Results indicated that there were more visitors to the help website during active campaigning periods, and helpline callers and website visitors were more likely to seek help after viewing campaign materials during active than non-active campaign periods. Help-seekers were predominantly men concerned about their own behavior. Survey 2 respondents concerned about their own behavior (n = 53) indicated that their awareness of the law (75.5%), and legal and personal consequences (67.9%) had changed after hearing about the campaign, and 66% reported a change in behavior. Abstract

Background: Neurodevelopmental disorders (NDDs) can cause debilitating impairments in social cognition and aberrant functional connectivity in large-scale brain networks, leading to social isolation and diminished everyday functioning. To facilitate the treatment of social impairments, animal models of NDDs that link Nmethyl-D-aspartate receptor (NMDAR) hypofunction to social deficits in adulthood have been used. However, understanding the etiology of social impairments in NDDs requires investigating social changes during sensitive windows during development. Methods: We examine social behavior during adolescence using a translational mouse model of NMDAR hypofunction (SR-/-) caused by knocking out serine racemase (SR), the enzyme needed to make D-serine, a key NMDAR coagonist. Species-typical social interactions are maintained through brain-wide neural activation patterns; therefore, we employed whole-brain cFos activity mapping to examine network-level connectivity changes caused by SR deletion. Results: In adolescent SR-/- mice, we observed disinhibited social behavior toward a novel conspecific and rapid social habituation toward familiar social partners. SR-/- mice also spent more time in the open arm of the elevated plus maze which classically points to an anxiolytic behavioral phenotype. These behavioral findings point to a generalized reduction in anxiety-like behavior in both social and non-social contexts in SR-/- mice; importantly, these findings were not associated with diminished working memory. Inter-regional patterns of cFos activation revealed greater connectivity and network density in SR-/- mice compared to controls. Discussion: These results suggest that NMDAR hypofunction - a potential biomarker for NDDs - can lead to generalized behavioral disinhibition in adolescence, potentially arising from disrupted communication between and within salience and default mode networks. Abstract

Mechanical properties of biological samples have been imaged with a \textit{Force Feedback Microscope}. Force, force gradient and dissipation are measured simultaneously and quantitatively, merely knowing the AFM cantilever spring constant. Our first results demonstrate that this robust method provides quantitative high resolution force measurements of the interaction The little oscillation imposed to the cantilever and the small value of its stiffness result in a vibrational energy much smaller than the thermal energy, reducing the interaction with the sample to a minimum. We show that the observed mechanical properties of the sample depend on the force applied by the tip and consequently on the sample indentation. Moreover, the frequency of the excitation imposed to the cantilever can be chosen arbitrarily, opening the way to frequency-dependent studies in biomechanics, sort of spectroscopic AFM investigations.

Child sexual exploitation material (CSEM) investigations have emerged as an area of specialization that combines multiple skillsets. Recent research has reshaped how we view CSEM offenders – they have different offense-supportive cognitions from contact sex offenders, their use of technology is no longer based on anecdotal evidence, and approaches to investigative planning, interviewing and forensics have evolved. This paper summarizes select, relevant areas of recent research related to CSEM investigations, and makes evidence-based recommendations for evolving how we approach these efforts.
