Abstract

Introduction: Parenting is a valued and complex role that is shaped by culture and context, which can be significantly impacted by a cancer diagnosis. This scoping review explored the unmet supportive care needs and impact on daily life for parents living with and beyond cancer. Methods: We used the PRISMA extension for scoping reviews (PRISMA-ScR) reporting guidelines to conduct a scoping review of the literature. Peer-reviewed literature published between January 2006 and December 2021 was searched using five databases: CINAHL, PsycINFO, PubMed, EMBASE, and Web of Science. Results: A total of 47 articles were included in the review representing 14 countries. Unmet supportive care needs persist across physical, spiritual, psychological, social, informational, practical, emotional domains, regardless of cancer diagnosis, stage of cancer or phase of the cancer care continuum. These unmet needs significantly impacted the daily lives of mothers and fathers living with and beyond cancer throughout studies. Conclusion: The results from this review highlight the range of reported supportive care needs of parents and its impact potentially contributing to occupational disruption. This provides a unique opportunity for occupational therapy practitioners to contribute to the occupational needs of parents living with and beyond cancer as an integral member of the interprofessional cancer care team. 18. Leveraging Higher Education Consortia for Institutional Advancement

Abstract

Purpose: The purpose of this paper is to explore conceptually the role of higher education consortia in facilitating the operational advancement of member institutions, and in enabling their development as learning organizations in a changing and competitive higher education environment. Design/methodology/approach: This article synthesizes the literature on higher education consortia and organizational learning and develops propositions to support future inquiry. Findings: While some institutions of higher education do indeed learn, the power that consortia hold to extend, expand, and exploit this learning may represent a vast, untapped resource. Through a better understanding of the role that consortium participation may play in organizational learning, a roadmap may be generated for higher education institutions to achieve the cultural and strategic shifts necessary to develop new directions for the delivery of educational content. This enhanced understanding also may help sustain the culture of, and innovative practices used by, learning organizations. Research limitations/implications: Consortia have the potential to offer a wide variety of benefits to institutions of higher education through innovative structure, operations, and delivery methods, generating tremendous potential for institutions of higher education to become more effective learning organizations. Originality/value: As institutions of higher learning continue to form collaborative partnerships through higher education consortia, interesting questions arise about the potential unexplored value of these institutional networks. This article suggests that the interplay of diverse practices and sharing of related organizational knowledge across institutions may provide an opportunity for learning and adaptation within them.

Abstract

In the search for novel ceramics for use within nuclear fuel–related applications and nuclear waste-form matrices, a major focus has been on the development of radiation-tolerant materials. Of particular interest in this field have been numerous compounds with either pyrochlore or the related fluorite-type structures. In this study, we look to expand the family of compounds with defect fluorite–type structure. We have fabricated three new compounds; Yb2Sn1.125O5.25, Yb2Sn1.25O5.5, and Yb2Sn1.375O5.75. The compound Yb2Sn1.125O5.25 was determined, via x-ray diffraction, to have the long-range defect fluorite structure, Fm-3 m symmetry, with cell parameter a = 5.17233(1). Further to this, Sm2ZrO5 and Yb2TiO5 compounds were also fabricated and crystal structures characterised. The use of transmission electron microscopy has revealed a much more complex crystal structure than that of the relatively high symmetry fluorite, with the presence of structural modulations being detected. The ion-irradiation response of these compounds was tested via bulk specimen irradiation using 15-MeV gold ions with grazing incidence x-ray diffraction characterisation. The results show that both Sm2ZrO5 and Yb2Sn1.25O5.5 are highly tolerant to ion-irradiation exposure whilst Yb2TiO5 is susceptible to amorphisation. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to understand the occupational performance of parents with cancer and to understand if photo-elicitation would provide new insights into these experiences. In a semi-structured photo-elicitation interview, 36 participants living with and beyond cancer who had children under 18 years old shared and discussed photographs related to their parenting experiences. Transcribed interviews were analyzed using thematic analysis. Two main themes were identified. Parents shared how they (a) managed daily responsibilities and (b) maintained connection with their family. Across all types, stages and phases of the cancer continuum parents shared experiences related to maintaining child and family responsibilities and maintaining connection with their children. Photo-elicitation was an efficient and effective method to gather rich data from parents living with cancer. The results emphasize the clinical utility of using photo-elicitation to understand the occupational performance of parents throughout the cancer continuum of care.

Abstract

Many older adult cancer survivors reduce their activity level during and after cancer treatment. Occupational therapy interventions need to flexibly address various obstacles to occupational engagement that survivors may face. The aim of this analysis was to describe the content of a participant-directed occupational therapy intervention for older adults with cancer. Content analysis was used to describe the treatment session data from the experimental arm of a pilot randomized controlled trial in terms of activities addressed, obstacles reported, and treatment strategies utilized. Participants predominantly used the intervention to increase exercise engagement or address instrumental activities of daily living. The most common obstacles to occupational engagement included fatigue, finding time, weather, and pain. Regarding treatment strategies, 77% of participants chose to practice the activity with the occupational therapist, 42% requested a piece of equipment, and 11% modified the environment to increase activity engagement. Overall, the participant-directed intervention appears flexible enough to address various activities and obstacles to occupational engagement. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
