The years 1860 to 1960 witnessed the birth and rapid expansion of the modern pulp and paper industry. Its sine qua non was access to enormous volumes of conifer trees that grew in the northern hemisphere's temperate and boreal forests. Predictably, countries in northern Europe with large swaths of these woodlands became home to substantial pulp and paper industries. This article explains why Great Britain represented Europe's glaring exception to this rule. Unique circumstances allowed it to become Europe's largest newsprint producer even though it suffered from a dearth of conifers. Britain's newspaper publishers grew their circulations and created the largest newsprint market in Europe for most of the period under examination. To meet their exploding demand for paper, they gained control over their country's newsprint industry. Like producers in other western European countries, they looked to Scandinavia to address their lack of domestic wood supplies, but they also exploited their imperial connection to access a prodigious supply of fibre and pulps in Canada and Newfoundland. Britain's competitive advantage in this regard was political and not economic because tapping this distant source of raw materials was costly. Nevertheless, British producers were able to absorb the higher costs because their business was vertically integrated. However, British producers could not outrun their resource deficit forever. The paper investigated the experience and emotional reaction of respondents to different newspaper photographic illustrations depending on the media of realization (print in newspaper press, laptop computer screen, and smartphone screen). Due to differences in the formation of basic visual psychophysical reactions in affirmative childhood, the respondents were chosen from two separate age groups: younger from 19 to 23 years and mature from 38 to 49 years. Respondents rated from 1 to 5 the emotional reaction caused by the observed photographic illustration according to the offered reactions: happiness, love, hope, fear, sadness, hatred, anger, envy, shock, sexual attraction, disgust, shame, pride, attraction, and sympathy. Through the research, the difference in experiences and emotional reactions depending on the gender and age difference was monitored. The results of the research indicate that depending on the medium of display, there are significant differences in the experience of photographic newspaper illustrations depending on the age of the respondents, gender, but that previous, but more current, habits of using display technologies also have a significant influence. This study examined the possibility of using various types of waste paper—used newsprint (NP), used lightweight coated paper (LWC), used office paper (OP), and used corrugated cardboard (CC)—for the removal of anionic dyes, Acid Red 18 (AR18) and Acid Yellow 23 (AY23), and cationic dyes, Basic Violet 10 (BV10) and Basic Red 46 (BR46), from aqueous solutions. The scope of this research included the characterization of sorbents (FTIR, SEM, BET surface area, porosity, pHPZC, effectiveness of water coloration), determination of pH effect on the effectiveness of dye sorption, sorption kinetics (pseudo-first-order model, second-order model, intraparticular diffusion model), and the maximum sorption capacity (Langmuir models and Freundlich model) of the tested sorbents. The use of waste paper materials as sorbents was found to not pose any severe risk of aquatic environment contamination. AR18, AY23, and BV10 sorption intensities were the highest at pH 2, and that of RB46 at pH 6. The waste paper sorbents proved particularly effective in removing cationic dyes, like in the case of, e.g., NP, which had a sorption capacity that reached 38.87 mg/g and 90.82 mg/g towards BV10 and BR46, respectively, and were comparable with that of selected activated carbons (literature data). This study examines the intriguing peculiarities of the surface paint layer found in the painting Village scene (1931) by renowned Singapore artist Liu Kang (1911–2004). The incorporation of non-invasive visible light (VIS) and near-infrared (NIR) photography techniques, combined with high-power digital microscopy, revealed unusual features on the surface paint layer. Flattened impastos, clusters of incrusted foreign paint unrelated to the existing paint scheme, and fragments of paper with printed traditional Chinese characters were identified on the painting’s surface. The results of the analyses cross-referenced with the archival photographs enabled the consideration of the specified features of the paint layer as unintentional damage caused by the artist due to inadequate storage and transportation conditions—paradoxically, in his attempt to protect the painting. As these damaged areas pose potential display and conservation problems, three conservation strategies were proposed based on ethical guidelines formulated by various governing bodies for the conservation profession. This study demonstrates that there is no universal conservation solution that can satisfy conflicting aesthetic and ethical opinions. The damage to the paint layer affects the visual properties of the artwork but also provides evidence of its complex history. In light of the above, there may be valid arguments both for returning the painting to its original state and for preserving its current condition. Therefore, good practice would require balanced judgments from conservators and curators, considering Village scene in the broader context of Liu Kang’s early painting practice and the existing archival information about the artist.

As the Thirty Years' War was the greatest demographic crisis in Europe between the Black Death and the two World Wars, it is unsurprising that the conflict created the greatest number of refugees in the continent's history prior to the twentieth century. However, the limited scholarship on displaced persons between 1618 and 1648 has been exclusively based on micro-level eyewitness accounts, diaries, and memoirs. This article broadens the scope of studies on refugees during the Thirty Years' War beyond such individualistic sources through an examination of their treatment in newsprint, a source base which has hitherto been entirely overlooked. A case study based on over 200 newspaper reports allows this article to examine how the frequency of appearances of refugees in newsprint, as well as the language and vocabulary used to describe them, can provide a valuable insight into the experiences of displaced persons and the attitudes of contemporaries in mid-seventeenth century Europe. The present study focuses on utilizing polystyrene emulsion treated newsprint microcrystalline fibers (NPMCF). These treated fibers were then added to styrene‐butadiene rubber (SBR) at different concentrations, namely, 3, 6, 9, and 12 phr (part per hundred part of rubber). Mixing of ingredients was carried out on a rubber roll mill and afterward molded as a thin film on a hot press, then, exposed to electron beam irradiation doses up to 200 kGy so as to enhance the treatment of the composites. Mechanical properties of the composites, such as tensile strength, elongation at break, tensile modulus, and cross‐link density were enhanced by adding the treated fiber to SBR and by irradiation, and this enhancement was obtained at 6 phr fiber at 100 kGy. Measurements of scanning electron microscopy (SEM) proved the adhesion of the treated fibers to SBR. The thermal conductivity was measured for the prepared composites as a function of electron beam irradiation and fiber content. It was found that the thermal conductivity decreases according to fiber loading (up to 6 phr fiber) and irradiation dose. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Direct seeding into strip-tilled zones (STZs) of living mulches may require weed suppression tactics for soil surfaces exposed within the STZ. Three surface mulch options (hydromulch, compost blanket, and a no-mulch control) were evaluated for their ability to suppress weeds and improve crop performance when applied in STZs seeded to carrot (Daucus carota). These STZs were located within one of five living mulch options [red clover (Trifolium pratense), white clover (Trifolium repens), perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne), a weed-free control, and a weedy control]. From measurements spanning 2 years at two North Dakota locations, dry weed biomass was lower in STZs where hydromulch or compost blankets were applied compared with the no-mulch control (12, 13, and 82 g·m−2, respectively). The presence of a living mulch adjacent to the STZ reduced carrot root biomass by 49% to 84% compared with the weed-free control. Further research should 1) investigate methods for reducing yield loss from living mulches, and 2) develop biodegradable alternatives to plastic mulches.

The 1909 Payne-Aldrich Tariff Act resulted in significant duties and taxes on imports of Canadian newsprint and wood pulp, a finished product and a commodity in constant demand in the United States. In response, American newspapers took up the cause of duty-free pulp and paper and positioned themselves in opposition to the "Paper Trust," a cabal of papermakers of which International Paper was chief. While there have been important studies of the history of American newsprint, no historian has yet analyzed the discourse and rhetoric employed by the papers themselves in opposition to the tariff. One of the drawbacks of utilizing non-forest fast growing species of Poplar as raw materials to produce newsprint in Mazandran Pulp and Paper Mill is fairly low bulk and opacity of produced paper at the yield of 85% (current CMP yield of the Mill). In this research work, the effect of process parameters (cooking yield and freeness) on the optical and mechanical properties of chemi-mechanical pulp was investigated. The chemi-mechanical pulps of poplar was prepared at four various levels of cooking yield, through changing the cooking time, and their properties at different level of freeness were evaluated in comparison with the control sample of Mazandran Pulp and Paper Mill (75% hornbeam and 25% beech). Strength properties of the paper pulps stemmed from the cooking yields of 85.25% to 90.4% were higher and more favorable than the control sample. By contrast, the strength properties of the produced paper pulp from the cooking yield of 94.6% were inferior to prepared paper pulp from the control sample. According to the results, there is the possibility of significant improvement of the strength properties, opacity and bulk of the chemi-mechanical pulps of poplar trough controlling the process parameters like cooking yield and freeness to utilize it as raw material of newsprint production in Mazandran Pulp and Paper Mill.

In this study, the possibility of using ash and orange bleached CMP pulp as replace in the full or part of CMP pulp of Mazandaran Wood and Paper Industries (MWPI) for making newsprint was investigated. For this purpose, first, ash and orange CMP pulps were prepared by using cooking conditions of MWPI with 101 gr/lit Na2O at the yield 85% in 75 minutes. Then some of the CMP pulps bleached with hydrogen peroxide, then its mixed samples with 15, 30, 45 and 60 percent to CMP pulp mill (control sample). From the mixed pulps provided hand sheets with 60 gr/m2 and these optical and mechanical properties measured and the data average were analyzed and compared. The results showed that newsprint from ash CMP pulp were more suitable than CMP pulp mill in all measured properties (except brightness) and orange CMP pulp (except opacity). Following bleaching with hydrogen peroxide, the brightness, tear, burst, tensile and breaking length strengths increased and opacity decreased. The results showed that ash and orange unbleached CMP pulps are not good properties for newsprint production and these pulps have to bleach with hydrogen peroxide. In generally, the best mixed pulps were includes 45-60 percent ash and orange bleached CMP pulps with 40-55 percent MWPI CMP pulp for newsprint production.

This study analyzed the hornification properties of the old newsprint fiber and its effects on the enzymatic hydrolysis and investigated the strategy for improving the hydrolysis efficiency. The results showed both of heating and vacuum can dry the fibers and cause hornification, which resulted in a significant decrease in the pore volume and the enzymatic saccharification efficiencies. A good linear relationship was presented between the enzymatic digestibility and the pore volume of the drying-induced hornified fibers from the two drying methods. The high content of lignin in this kind of hornified fiber aggravated the inhibition of hornification on the enzymatic saccharification of cellulose through physical barriers blocking cellulase to contact the partial surface of hornified cellulose. Moreover, the strategy of using surfactants to enhance enzymatic hydrolysis was preliminarily explored. The results showed that enzymatic saccharification of the hornified lignin-containing fiber was significantly improved after the addition of surfactants. The increase in glucose yield reached the maximum value of 7.15 g/L after adding PEG 8000. Anionic surfactants exhibited the similar effects but weaker than the non-ionic ones. And the most effective time of the surfactants applied to hornified fibers was postponed from 6 to 12 h as the fiber hornification degree increased. The aim of this study was to determine the optimum combination of wheat straw and white poplar (P. alba) chemimechanical pulps (CMPs) for producing newsprint paper. The CMP was prepared separately from the two raw materials. Cooking conditions included 10%, 12%, and 14% chemical charge based on w/w oven dry raw materials, maximum cooking temperatures of 120, 140, and 160 °C, and cooking time of 45 min. Hydrogen peroxide was used for bleaching the selected pulp. The results indicated that screened pulp yields were in the range of 54.3% to 61% and 80.9% to 85.9% for 18 cooking trials of wheat straw and white poplar, respectively. Handsheet brightness reached up to 52.9% and 61.9% for wheat straw and white poplar, respectively. The highest breaking length and burst index were related to CMP produced from 25% white poplar/75% wheat straw pulp blend. The best tear index was obtained using a mixture of 50% white poplar and 50% wheat straw pulp. Averages of breaking length, burst and tear indices ranged between 4.61 and 3.80 km, 2.31 and 2.55 kPa•m2/g, and 7.29 and 11.1 mN•m2/g, respectively. The strength properties of handsheets were higher than those reported for commercial newsprint except the breaking length of 50%/50% blend.

In the present research , the effect of utilizing a mixture of Birch with Hornbeam & Beech species (in the comparison with sample CMP( 75% Hornbeam 25% Beech) , on the mechanical and optical properties of papers produced within the domain of Freeness degree (CSF) of 300 ml and 85% yield has been reviewed . The CMP was prepared in accordance with 85% yield condition , different cooking times (30-120 min) , temperature of 170°C and white liquor ratio to chips in 7 to 1 & 20% Sulfide based on chips dry weight at 4 levels of 10, 20, 30 & 100% Birch mixed with Birch and Hornbeam species. After defibration and preparation of 60gm hand sheets, the optical and mechanical properties of that were assessed. The results indicated that by increasing the percentage rate of Birch , the quality of the manufactured paper was also increased and the best strength and optical properties were related to the 30 & 100% consumption rates of Birch in mixture with Beech and Hornbeam species.

This research and aim was using Bamboo and Reed CMP pulp for newsprint production. For this purpose, some chips of bamboo stem in the west of Mazandaran were randomly chosen. Then CMP Pulps were prepared at the yield 85%in 120 minutes(Bamboo) and 31 minutes(Reed), by using cooking conditions of Wood and Paper Industries of Mazandaran 60 gr/m2 newsprint handsheets were prepared from the Bamboo and Reed CMP and Mill(MWPI) CMP pulps, first in a separate and then mixed way with 25,50,75 percents. Then the optical and mechanical properties were measured and compared according by using TAPPI Standard test methods. The results showed that the most strength of the burst, breaking length, tensile, tear strength, yellowness and opacity were in the handsheets obtained from 100% the bamboo CMP pulp and the lowest strength (except brightness) was in Reed CMP pulp. The results also pointed out that the above-mentioned all strengths (except brightness) can be improved by using 25-100% of the bamboo CMP pulp, too. The results also indicated that 25-100% of the bamboo CMP pulp and 25% of the Reed CMP pulp can use for newsprint production.

In this study, production of bleached chemical- mechanical pulp from wheat straw for newsprint papermaking was investigated. Wheat straw for pulping was obtained from Lorestan province. Wheat straw CMP pulp was prepared at 120, 140, and 160 °C temperature, 45 minute time, 10, 12, and 14% chemicals charge and 10:1 cooking liquor and straw ratio. The yield after defibration treatment varied between 56.5% and 72.5%. Two optimum pulps bleached by TCF method applying 2% and 3% NaOH, 1.5% and 2% H2O2, and 60 and 120 minutes bleaching time. One way analysis variance method showed that bleaching time had the most significant effect on optical properties of handsheet. Applying 3% (based on oven dry weight of the unbleached pulp) NaOH, 2% H2O2, and 120 min. in bleaching improved the brightness and opacity to 52.9%, and 79.5% ISO, respectively. Optimum pulp strengths including tensile, burst and tear indices were measured 43.87 Nm/g, 2.18 kPa.m2/g, and 8.46 mN.m2/g, respectively. All the strengths were higher than newsprint paper strength produced by Mazandaran wood and paper and Korean companies.

Abstract: Various parameters that may affect the efficiency of tri- and di-functional aminoalkylalkoxysilanes (AAAS) copolymer treatments to deacidify and mechanically strengthen aged complex papers (lignocellulosic pulp, additives) were studied. Three model papers were first hydrothermally aged (90 °C—50% RH) in order to achieve physicochemical characteristics similar to those of a naturally aged newsprint, and were then treated with AAAS copolymers. The chemical composition of the treatments varied from 50 to 5 wt% of tri-functional monomer APTES, the latter acting as cross-linker in the copolymer network. The respective ratio of tri- and di-functional monomers in the mixture was shown to greatly influence the mechanical properties of the treated papers in the case of APTES/DIAMINO but less so in the case of APTES/AMDES. If APTES/DIAMINO (50/50 wt%) did not strengthen the degraded papers, a higher proportion of DIAMINO (95 wt%) and lower proportion of APTES (5 wt%) led to improving the tensile strength and, more importantly for the function properties of paper, significantly enhancing the folding endurance. The treatment efficiency decreased at higher state of deterioration of the papers and in the presence of alum-rosin sizing. Lastly, the treatments developed for the artificially aged model papers were applied to the degraded newsprint paper specimen and successfully enhanced its mechanical properties.Graphical abstract: [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This research focused on the production of a novel calcium silicate pigment made from pulverized coal fly ash and its application as a coating pigment in a size press for fiber replacement. Improved specific base paper properties of the newsprint was investigated. This novel coated fly ash based calcium silicate (FACS) pigment and conventional precipitated calcium carbonate (PCC) pigment was applied using a cylindrical laboratory coater. When a 4.3 gsm coat weight of FACS was used during the size press application, the brightness increased 10 points, whereas, when the coat weight of FACS was increased to 7.8 gsm, the brightness increased to 21 points as compared to base newsprint sheet; however, FACS brightness was lower than the PCC coated newsprint sheet. Also, there was a significant gain in other newsprint specific base properties when fly ash based pigment was used. This indicated that it is feasible to utilize a novel fly ash based pigment in the size press coating application to replace fiber in order to reduce production cost, improve specific base properties, and reduce environmental pollution. The study is focused on the modification of the standardized newspaper with natural polymers chitosan and keratin hydrolysate applied on the paper surface from polymer solution. This modification is based particularly on the formation of the complexes between acidic surface groups on cellulose fibers and the natural polymers which improved the mechanical properties of the paper and the positive results which were observed particularly in folding endurance of the newspaper.
