Based on original archival material, newspaper texts and relevant literature, the authors investigate the life path of Dr. Emilija Holik, a doctor from Bjelovar who in the second half of the 1930s became a communist (during her studies in Zagreb) and as such worked for the Partisans movement during the Second World War. Dr. Holik studied at the Faculty of Medicine in Zagreb and got her first job in Bjelovar at the Banovina Hospital of that time. In Bjelovar, she was involved in communist activities before the war, especially through the "Society for Education of Women" of which she was the president. With the collapse of the Kingdom of Yugoslavia in the April War of 1941 and the founding of the NDH (Independent State of Croatia), Dr. Holik, as a communist, interfered with the new Ustasha authorities and soon ended up in the Danica concentration camp near Koprivnica. After she was released from it, in September 1941, at the intervention of her father and other prominent people from Bjelovar, Dr. Holik returned to her workplace. Despite having lived through difficult days in the camp, she returns to her communist ideas and continues to support the Partisan movement by founding the Committee for Red Aid, together with other staff of the Bjelovar hospital, especially Dr. Svetozar Begić, who collects money and material resources for the Partisans. In addition, Dr. Holik and his colleagues in the Bjelovar hospital provide treatment for wounded Partisans under false names, and also help in hiding in the hospital premises together with other doctors who were persecuted by the Ustasha regime - Jews, Serbs, anti-fascist Croats and others. Her activities were discovered in September 1942, and she was arrested and shot in Vojnović, Bjelovar, on October 13 of the same year. U članku se na osnovu neobjavljene arhivske građe iz Vojnog arhiva u Beogradu, objavljenih izvora koji se čuvaju u hrvatskim arhivima, relevantne memoarske i istoriografske literature, prikazuje atmosfera u društvu Kraljevine Jugoslavije, s naglaskom na Bjelovar. Posebna pažnja je posvećena analizi izvođenja mobilizacije jedinica Slavonske divizije i rekonstrukciji toka pobune njenih pešadijskih pukova u vreme Aprilskog rata 1941. godine.

Autor na temelju relevantne literature i (ne)poznatih izvora prikazuje djelovanje Giuseppea Masuccija kao tajnika apostolskog poslanika za vrijeme Nezavisne Države Hrvatske i u prvoj godini komunističke Jugoslavije. U radu se posebno analiziraju do sada neistraženi dokumenti koji se nalaze u Hrvatskom državnom arhivu (fond Službe državne sigurnosti), a koji su rezultat rada jugoslavenskih tajnih službi za vrijeme nadzora i obrade Giuseppea Masuccija. Također, na istome mjestu nalazi se i do sada nepoznata inačica prijevoda Masuccijeva dnevnika, koja se na brojnim mjestima ne podudara s onom objavljenom 1967. u Madridu. Autor pokazuje kako se bez cjelovitog prikaza Masuccijeva djelovanja ne može ispravno zaključivati ne samo o djelovanju zagrebačkog nadbiskupa Stepinca nego ni općenito o državno-crkvenim odnosima u promatranom razdoblju.

Before the physical destruction of the Jews from Bosnia and Herzegovina, several different laws and regulations, based on antisemitism were adopted. Most of them were adopted in the period of only five months. Their names and sequence show the means of „resolving the Jewish Issue“ on the territory of the Independent State of Croatia that encompassed Bosnia and Herzegovina. The Holocaust of the Bosnian and Herzegovinian Jews was conducted following the general pattern of the Nazi ideology. The representatives of the Nazy ideology left the „resolution of the Jewish issue“ and the commitement of crimes to the Ustasha regime. Therefore, this paper will be oriented towards two basic considerations – the emergence of antisemitism on our territory, as an important factor in the commitment of the crimes, and the development of the legal framework of the Nazi regime, and its implementation and further development in Bosnia and Herzegovina. Not much is said about this topic, almost nothing, and neither in the school books nor in the whole history of Bosnia and Herzegovina. Even bigger reservation is made in regards to the responsibility for the committed crimes. It is commonly accepted that the Holocaust was committed by someone else in some other state. When Holocaust is mentioned in Bosnia and Herzegovina or spoken about, it is commonly referred to the Auschwitz, Germany or Jasenovac. Based on the original files and publications of the relevant authors, this article examines some of the key aspects of the committed Holocaust on Jews from Bosnia and Herzegovina, especially children, from the process of dehumanization, adoption of the legal framework which provided the opportunity for the crimes, to camps they went through and finally, found the places of their execution. Povod za ovu raspravu jest skupna tužba (Class Action Complaint) koju je grupa nasljednika i rodbine hrvatskih Židova, Srba i Roma podnijela protiv Republike Hrvatske 31. svibnja 2016. godine Okružnom sudu Sjedinjenih Država za Sjeverni okrug Istočnoga područja Illinoisa. Tužba se zasniva na tvrdnji o apsolutnom identitetu i kontinuitetu Republike Hrvatske s tzv. „Nezavisnom Državom Hrvatskom“ iz Drugog svjetskog rata. U tužbi se od Republike Hrvatske traži odšteta za pretrpljene gubitke žrtava holokausta u ukupnom iznosu od 3.500.000.000 američkih dolara.

In this paper the authors analyze the emotions of survivors of the camp system Gospić-Jadovno-Pag, where people of Serb and Jewish ethnic descent were murdered during the summer of 1941, as well as communists and other political enemies of the ustashi regime. The approach to the study of emotions is based on the eyewitness accounts published by the historian Đuro Zatezalo. The paper starts with an analysis of the emotions in history with a particular emphasis on the testimonies of survivors as a distinctive and extremely important source in the studies of the Holocaust and genocide. Afterwards, the authors examine the intentions of those who collected the testimonies, as well as memories and emotions as aspects which a historian who researches testimonies ought to have in mind. A description of the impact of race laws issued by the Independent State of Croatia is provided together with an overview of the history of the camp system Gospić-Jadovno-Pag, followed by an analysis of the emotives expressed in the testimonies, with the focus on the emotions of fear, anxiety, hope and joy. The relation between recollection and emotions is also discussed, in addition to the way in which the flow of time can alter the intensity and the contents of emotion, which can provide a valuable methodological insight to the researchers focusing on the history of genocide and oral history. The paper contains transcripts of several documents pertaining to the establishment and activities of the Department X. The Department was established in late 1942 within the Main Directorate for Public Order and Safety of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of the Independent State of Croatia (Nezavisna Država Hrvatska, NDH). The task of the Department X was to gather intelligence information about Chetnik units and to establish contacts and cooperation with them. But the Department X also had a task to gather information about the Partisan movement. After the proclamation of the NDH, headed by the Ustasha regime, it initiated a campaign of state terror against the Serb population. The NDH labelled this population "Greek-Eastern" and later "Orthodox". This terror led to the uprising of Serbs that gradually developed into two mutually opposed movements - Chetniks, loyal to the Kingdom of Yugoslavia, and Partisans led by the Communist Party of Yugoslavia. The struggle between royalists and communists led Chetniks into cooperation with the Axis powers. During mid-1942 some Chetnik detachments operating in Bosnia made ceasefire agreements with the NDH authorities. The NDH did not give up from crushing the uprising by force, but along with negotiations with Chetniks it also initiated some other measures whose aim was to lessen the animosity and distrust of the Orthodox population toward the regime. Despite all this, the NDH regime was weak and it ultimately could not restore order neither with military force, nor with measures of peaceful pacification. The Department X duty was to take complete control and leadership over the already established contacts with Chetniks, as well as to investigate the possibility of further cooperation with them. Concerning the transcribed documents of the Department X in the paper they show how it commenced with its activities but they also contain analysis of the Department X about the causes that led to the appearance of the Chetnik (and the Partisan) movement on the NDH territory. The analysis is interesting because the Department X (in)directly concluded that the NDH regime itself, with its policy of terror against Serbs in 1941, bears the main responsibility for the uprising. Therefore, at least some elements in the higher NDH administration were aware that the regime's policy of state terror against the Serb population was ultimately counterproductive because it led to a large scale uprising of the Serb population. But, as mentioned, when the Department X reached such conclusion it was too late to rectify the consequences of the NDH policy during 1941.
