Background:  The need for sizing the secundum atrial septal defect (ASD) with the balloon sizing technique is still debated at least in adult patients. We sought to prospectively evaluate the effectiveness of intracardiac echocardiography (ICE)-aided sizing technique for transcatheter closure of secundum ASD, without using a balloon sizing. Methods:  In a prospective 5-year registry, we enrolled 81 patients (mean age 48 ± 13.7 years, 54 females) who had been referred to three different centers for atheter-based closure of secundum ASD. Eligible patients underwent ICE study and closure attempt. In a preliminary group of 21 patients, sizing balloon was performed under ICE guidance to assess the value of rim thickness necessary for device anchorage. In the remaining 60 patients, the retrieved value of the rim thickness was measured on ICE and used as key points to measure the defect and select the device. Results: In the preliminary group of patients, the value of thickness at point of initial deflection by the balloon was 1.23 ± 0.1 mm. ASD diameter in the study group was measured at the point of rim with at least 1.2 mm and the mean ASD diameter was 26.2 ± 10.1 mm. Rates of procedural success, predischarge occlusion, and major complications rate were 100%, 93.3%, and 0%, respectively. On mean follow-up of 5.4 ± 1.8 years, the occlusion rate was 98.7% with no long-term complications. Conclusions:  Our novel ICE-sizing technique appears to be safe and effective in adult patients, thus eventually minimizing overestimation, costs, and potential complications of balloon sizing. Removing antibiotics from water is critical to prevent the emergence and spread of antibiotic resistance, protect ecosystems, and maintain the effectiveness of these vital medications. The combination of ozone and electrocoagulation in wastewater treatment provides enhanced removal of contaminants, improved disinfection efficiency, and increased overall treatment effectiveness. In this work, the removal of sulfamethoxazole (SMX) from an aqueous solution using an ozone-electrocoagulation (O-EC) system was optimized and modeled. The experiments were designed according to the central composite design. The parameters, including current density, reaction time, pH, and ozone dose affecting the SMX removal efficiency of the OEC system, were optimized using a response surface methodology. The results show that the removal process was accurately predicted by the quadric model. The numerical optimization results show that the optimum conditions were a current density of 33.2 A/m 2 , a time of 37.8 min, pH of 8.4, and an ozone dose of 0.7 g/h. Under these conditions, the removal efficiency reached 99.65%. A three-layer artificial neural network (ANN) with logsig-purelin transfer functions was used to model the removal process. The data predicted by the ANN model matched well to the experimental data. The calculation of the relative importance showed that pH was the most influential factor, followed by current density, ozone dose, and time. The kinetics of the SMX removal process followed the first-order kinetic model with a rate constant of 0.12 (min -1 ). The removal mechanism involves various processes such as oxidation and reduction on the surface of electrodes, the reaction between ozone and ferrous ions, degradation of SMX molecules, formation of flocs, and adsorption of species on the flocs. The results obtained in this work indicate that the O-EC system is a potential approach for the removal of antibiotics from water.

Objective: Major depressive disorder (MDD) is the second-most prevalent mental health condition in Vietnam. This study aims to validate the Vietnamese versions of the self-reported and clinician-rated Quick Inventory of Depressive Symptomatology (QIDS-SR and QIDS-C, respectively) and the Patient Health Questionnaire (PHQ-9), and to assess the correlations between the QIDS-SR, QIDS-C, and PHQ-9., Methods: 506 participants with MDD (mean age, 46.3 years; 55.5% women) were assessed using the Structured Clinical Interview for DSM-5. The internal consistency, diagnostic efficiency, and concurrent validity of the Vietnamese versions of QIDS-SR, QIDS-C, and PHQ-9 were determined using the Cronbach's alpha, receiver operating characteristic curve, and Pearson correlation coefficient, respectively., Results: The Vietnamese versions of QIDS-SR, QIDS-C, and PHQ-9 demonstrated acceptable validity, with an area under the receiver operating characteristic curve of 0.901, 0.967, and 0.864, respectively. Sensitivity and specificity, respectively, were 87.8% and 77.8% for QIDS-SR and 97.6% and 86.2% for QIDS-C at the cut-off score of 6, and were 82.9% and 70.1% for PHQ-9 at the cut-off score of 4. Cronbach's alphas for QIDS-SR, QIDS-C, and PHQ-9 were 0.709, 0.813, and 0.745, respectively. The PHQ-9 highly correlated with the QIDS-SR (r = 0.77, p < 0.001) and the QIDS-C (r = 0.75, p < 0.001)., Conclusion: The Vietnamese versions of the QIDS-SR, QIDS-C, and PHQ-9 are valid and reliable tools for screening of MDD in primary healthcare settings., Competing Interests: No authors have disclosed any conflicts of interest.

Concentrations and profiles of 17 perfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) including 13 perfluorocarboxylic acids (PFA) and 4 perfluoroalkyl sulfonates (PFS) were determined in whole blood, muscle, and liver samples of four freshwater fish species in West Lake and Yen So Lake (Hanoi, Vietnam). Concentrations of total 17 PFAS in fish blood samples ranged from 5.2 to 29 (median 16) ng/mL. Total 17 PFAS levels in liver samples (4.5; 2.7-6.6 ng/g wet weight) were significantly higher than in muscle samples (1.0; 0.51-2.6 ng/g wet weight). More than 90% PFAS burdens in our fish samples were attributed to muscle and blood rather than liver, but contributions of individual compounds varied greatly. The most predominant substances were perfluorooctanesulfonate (PFOS) and PFA with chain lengths from C10 to C14 (i.e., PFDA, PFUnDA, PFDoDA, PFTrDA, and PFTeDA). There is no significant difference in PFAS concentrations between the studied species (i.e., bighead carp, common carp, rohu, and tilapia), but common carp showed specific PFAS profiles as compared to other species (e.g., higher proportions of PFOS and long-chain PFA such as PFTrDA, PFTeDA, and PFHxDA). Daily intake doses of PFOS and perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) through fish consumption were markedly lower than the US EPA reference dose of 20 ng/kg/day. Weekly intakes of the sum of PFHxS, PFOS, PFOA, and PFNA in our study were still lower than the EFSA tolerable weekly intake of 4.4 ng/kg/week., (© 2022. The study aims to examine correlations between nutrition status with different factors and dental caries of preschool children in rural areas of Vietnam. A big data based on a total of 690 children (356 boys and 334 girls), aged 2-5 years, living in Van Xuan commune, were thoroughly analyzed. Oral examinations were performed by dentists with the assistance of nursery teachers and the research team. Caries was diagnosed using criteria established by the International Caries Detection and Assessment System (ICDAS). The examined children and their parents responded to questions pertaining to dental hygiene practices. The nutrition status of preschool children was determined by the World Health Organization (WHO) standards in 2006. There are factors which have effects on the malnutrition status of children in the research. The prevalence of dental caries also contributed importantly to assess children's development. In this study, the stunting groups have a higher ratio of caries compared to the others. Purpose: To evaluate the efficiency of a biodegradable gel containing hyaluronic acid and berberine hydrochloride in endoscopic sinus surgery., Methods: Sixty-six chronic rhinosinusitis patients with or without nasal polyps who underwent bilateral endoscopic sinus surgery (ESS) were randomly received a biodegradable gel containing hyaluronic acid and berberine hydrochloride or merocel in both middle meatal spacers at the end procedure of ESS. Lund-Kennedy endoscopic score (LKES) was used to examine status of nasal cavity on preoperative day and postoperative day 1 to 7. The LKES ratio was calculated as the LKES on postoperative day divided into the LKES on preoperative day. Visual analogue score (VAS) was used to assess patient's status from the first postoperative day to the hospital discharge day. The average VAS during hospital stays was calculated by the sum of VAS in each examination day divided into the number of examined day. The LKES ratio, the average of VAS during hospital stays and length of hospitalized day of the patients were used as clinical outcome indices in early stage after surgery. A general linear model adjusted for confounding factors was used for data analysis., Results: Adjusted mean of LKES ratio were lower in group used biodegrable gel of hyaruloic acid and berberin hydrochlode (study group) than those in merocele group in the postoperative day 1 to day 7. However, significant difference was found in the adjusted mean of LKES ratio on the postoperative day 2 to 6. Similarly, the adjusted mean of VAS during hospital stays and length of hospitalized day after surgery in study group were significantly decreased as compared with those in merocele group., Conclusions: Biodegradable material containing hyaluronic acid and berberine hydrochloride was more effective than merocel in length of hospital stay, post-operative symptoms, and sinus cavity's status in early stage after ESS., (Copyright © 2022 Elsevier Inc. Decorating two-dimensional (2D) nanomaterials with nanoparticles provides an effective method to integrate their physicochemical properties. In this work, we present the hydrothermal growth process of 2D zinc oxide nanoplates (ZnO NPls), then silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) were uniformly distributed on the surface of ZnO NPls through the reduction procedure of silver nitrate with sodium borohydride to create a metal-semiconductor hybrid. The amount of AgNPs on the ZnO NPls' surface was carefully controlled by varying the volume of silver nitrate (AgNO 3 ) solution. Moreover, the effect of AgNPs on the surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) property of ZnO NPls was thoroughly investigated by using methylene blue (MB) as the target molecule. After calculation, the maximum enhancement factor value for 10 -4 M of MB reached 6.2 × 10 6 for the peak at 1436 cm -1 and the limit of detection was 10 -9 M. In addition, the hybrid nanosystem could distinguish MB with good reproducibility over a wide range of concentrations, from 10 -9 to 10 -4 M. The SERS mechanism is well elucidated based on the chemical and electromagnetic mechanisms related to the synergism of ZnO and Ag in the enhancement of Raman signal. Abundant hot spots located at the gap between adjacent separate Ag nanoparticles and ZnO nanoplates which formed a strong local electromagnetic field and electron transfer between ZnO and Ag are considered to be the key factors affecting the SERS performance of our prepared ZnO/Ag substrates. In this research, we found high sensitivity of ZnO nanoplates/Ag nanoparticles in detecting MB molecules. Multiple symmetric lipomatosis (MSL) is a rare disease associated with metabolic disorders and alcoholism. In this report, we describe the clinical outcome and surgical protocol for eight men with Madelung collar who underwent treatment in a craniofacial and plastic surgery facility in Hanoi, Vietnam, between May 2018 and December 2020. We discuss the patients' clinical symptoms, subclinical signs, epidemiology, magnetic resonance imaging, computerized tomography, surgical protocol, complications, and postoperative indicators that we collected and evaluated. Each patient underwent surgery in two stages (i.e., in supine and prone positions). We injected a tumescent solution 10 min before the incision. Two surgeons performed each operation simultaneously. After surgery, we followed the patients for 6-27 months. All of the patients had a history of long-time alcohol abuse and had associated comorbidities that included liver disease, blood disorders, restricted neck movement, and orthopnea. We did not have to open the trachea or transfuse blood during any of the surgical procedures. Postoperatively, all patients were satisfied with their functional results and aesthetic appearance. One patient experienced a recurrence of his MSL. We examined the allelic expression and positioning of two pluripotency-associated genes, OCT4 and SOX2, and two housekeeping genes, ACTB and TUBA, in 4- and 8-cell porcine embryos utilizing RNA and DNA fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) in single blastomeres. The proportion of blastomeres expressing SOX2 bi-allelically increased from 45% at the 4-cell stage to 60% at the 8-cell stage. Moreover, in 8-cell embryos, SOX2 was expressed bi-allelically in significantly more blastomeres than was the case for OCT4, and this was associated with a tendency for SOX2 alleles to move toward the nuclear interior during 4- to 8-cell transition. However, the radial location of OCT4 alleles did not change significantly during this transition. The locations of active and inactive alleles based on DNA and RNA FISH signals were also calculated. Inactive OCT4 alleles were located in very close proximity to the nuclear membrane, whereas active OCT4 alleles were more centrally disposed in the nucleus. Nevertheless, the nuclear location of active and inactive SOX2 alleles did not change in either 4- or 8-cell blastomeres. Aim: To assess the long-term outcomes of device-based closure of atrial septal defects (ASDs) with no sizing balloon., Material and Methods: Two hundred and eighty-one consecutive patients (mean age 34±13 years, 178 women) underwent intracardiac echocardiography (ICE)-aided transcatheter closure of secundum ASDs over a 15-year period (September 2002 to March 2017). Sizing of the ASDs was calculated under ICE guidance (UltraICE, EP Technologies, Boston Scientific Corporation, San Jose, CA, USA) using the concept of "supportive rim" for ASDs without the aid of a sizing balloon. Follow-up was conducted by transoesophageal and transthoracic echocardiography., Results: The procedure was carried out successfully in all patients with 0% related mortality and 5.7% procedural complications. The Amplatzer ASD Occluder was implanted in 251 patients (89.3%, mean size 26.4±10.2 mm) whereas the Gore Cardioform was used in 30 patients (10.6%). Over 10.3±3 years of follow-up (range 1-15) 100% of patients were alive. The complete occlusion rate was 97.8%. No aortic or atrial free wall erosions, device thrombosis, or device frame fractures were detected during the follow-up period., Conclusion: The present study suggested that ICE-guided closure of ASDs with current devices without sizing balloons is safe and effective with very low procedural and late complications even in the very long-term follow-up., (Copyright © 2019 The Royal College of Radiologists. Introduction: Interatrial shunt closure is considered the first-line therapy for congenital simple communications such as patent forame ovale (PFO), atrial septal defect (ASD), and post surgical interatrial communications., Areas Covered: Anatomical, functional, and technical details useful for planning a transcatheter-based closure procedure are discussed as well as the available equipments and their use and the procedural routes and the specific closure techniques., Expert Commentary: Anatomical and functional details, appreciated at both pre-procedural and intraprocedural steps, are of paramount importance for planning interatrial shunts transcatheter - based closure procedures. Rims of the defects, borders of the fossa ovalis, presence and relevance of atrial septal aneurysm, persistence of Eustachian valve or cor triatriatum dexter, and interatrial septum hypertrophy or lipomatosis are all factors to be investigated when planning the procedure and selecting the device. Routes for interventions should include femoral, and eventually the jugular and hepatic vein approaches. Intraprocedural transoesophageal echocardiography (TTE) or intracardiac echocardiography (ICE) should be used at least in most complex cases to have the exact definition of the anatomy of the defects. Future developments of device material and imaging tools are expected to improve safety and long-term efficacy even in the most complex cases.

Objective: The purpose of this survey was to estimate the prevalence of viral load (VL) suppression and emergence of HIV drug resistance (HIVDR) among individuals receiving antiretroviral therapy (ART) for 36 months or longer in Viet Nam using a nationally representative sampling method., Methods: The survey was conducted between May and August 2014 using a two-stage cluster design. Sixteen ART clinics were selected using probability proportional to proxy size sampling, and patients receiving ART for at least 36 months were consecutively enrolled. Epidemiological information and blood specimens were collected for HIV-1 VL and HIVDR testing; HIVDR was defined by the Stanford University HIVDR algorithm., Results: Overall, 365 eligible individuals were recruited with a mean age of 38.2 years; 68.4% were men. The mean time on ART was 75.5 months (95% confidence interval [CI]: 69.0-81.9 months), and 93.7% of the patients were receiving non-nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitor-based regimens. Of the 365 individuals, 345 (94.7%, 95% CI: 64.1-99.4%) had VL below 1000 copies/mL and 19 (4.6%, 95% CI: 2.8--7.5) had HIVDR mutations., Discussion: Our nationally representative survey found a high level of VL suppression and a low prevalence of HIVDR among individuals who received ART for at least 36 months in Viet Nam. Continued surveillance for HIVDR is important for evaluating and improving HIV programs.

Background/purpose: Multiple BRSs and specifically the Absorb scaffold (BVS) (Abbott Vascular, Santa Clara, CA USA) have been often used to treat long diffuse coronary artery lesions. We evaluate by a computational fluid dynamic(CFD) study the impact on the intravascular fluid rheology on multiple bioabsorbable scaffolds (BRS) by standard overlapping versus edge-to-edge technique., Methods/materials: We simulated the treatment of a real long significant coronary lesion (>70% luminal narrowing) involving the left anterior descending artery (LAD) treated with a standard or edge-to-edge technique, respectively. Simulations were performed after BVS implantations in two different conditions: 1) Edge-to-edge technique, where the scaffolds are kissed but not overlapped resulting in a luminal encroachment of 0.015cm (150μm); 2) Standard overlapping, where the scaffolds are overlapped resulting in a luminal encroachment of 0.030cm (300μm). After positioning the BVS across the long lesion, the implantation procedure was performed in-silico following all the usual procedural steps., Results: Analysis of the wall shear stress (WSS) suggested that at the vessel wall level the WSS were lower in the overlapping zones overlapping compared to the edge-to-edge zone (∆=0.061Pa, p=0.01). At the struts level the difference between the two WSS was more striking (∆=1.065e-004 p=0.01) favouring the edge-to-edge zone., Conclusions: Our study suggested that at both vessel wall and scaffold struts levels, there was lowering WSS when multiple BVS were implanted with the standard overlapping technique compared to the "edge-to-edge" technique. This lower WSS might represent a substrate for restenosis, early and late BVS thrombosis, potentially explaining at least in part the recent evidences of devices poor performance., (Copyright © 2017 Elsevier Inc. This paper presents the results of zeta potential, water contact angle, atomic force microscopy image, in vitro solubility, and content of heavy metals in polylactic acid (PLA)/chitosan (CS) nanoparticles loading nifedipine. In addition, the In Vivo test of the PLA/CS nanoparticles loading nifedipine in the mice is also one of highlights of this work. The Zeta potential result shows that the charged surface of the PLA/CS nanoparticles loading nifedipine is neutral, negative or complex depending on nifedipine content. Nifedipine plays a role in increase of hydrophobic property, swelling degree and regular surface as well as decrease of surface rough of the nanoparticles. The PLA/CS/nifedipine nanoparticles are dissolved in the solutions with pH 6.8, pH 4.5 and pH 1.2. The In Vivo test of PLA/CS nanoparticles loading nifedipine on mice was evaluated by the change in diastolic pressure, systolic pressure, arterial pressure and heart rate. The obtained results confirm that the PLA/CS nanoparticles loading nifedipine is suitable to apply in the treatment of hypertension patients lately.

In this paper, we present a pseudo optimization method for electronic nose (e-nose) data using region selection with feature feedback based on regularized linear discriminant analysis (R-LDA) to enhance the performance and cost functions of an e-nose system. To implement cost- and performance-effective e-nose systems, the number of channels, sampling time and sensing time of the e-nose must be considered. We propose a method to select both important channels and an important time-horizon by analyzing e-nose sensor data. By extending previous feature feedback results, we obtain a two-dimensional discriminant information map consisting of channels and time units by reverse mapping the feature space to the data space based on R-LDA. The discriminant information map enables optimal channels and time units to be heuristically selected to improve the performance and cost functions. The efficacy of the proposed method is demonstrated experimentally for different volatile organic compounds. In particular, our method is both cost and performance effective for the real implementation of e-nose systems.

We investigated the reaction dynamics of O((1)D) towards hydrogen atoms of two types in HCOOH. The reaction was initiated on irradiation of a flowing mixture of O3 and HCOOD or DCOOH at 248 nm. The relative vibration-rotational populations of OH and OD (1 ≦ v ≦ 4, J ≤ 15) states were determined from time-resolved IR emission recorded with a step-scan Fourier-transform spectrometer. In the reaction of O((1)D) + HCOOD, the rotational distribution of product OH is nearly Boltzmann, whereas that of OD is bimodal. The product ratio [OH]/[OD] is 0.16 ± 0.05. In the reaction of O((1)D) + DCOOH, the rotational distribution of product OH is bimodal, but the observed OD lines are too weak to provide reliable intensities. The three observed OH/OD channels agree with three major channels of production predicted with quantum-chemical calculations. In the case of O((1)D) + HCOOD, two intermediates HOC(O)OD and HC(O)OOD are produced in the initial C-H and O-D insertion, respectively. The former undergoes further decomposition of the newly formed OH or the original OD, whereas the latter produces OD via direct decomposition. Decomposition of HOC(O)OD produced OH and OD with similar vibrational excitation, indicating efficient intramolecular vibrational relaxation, IVR. Decomposition of HC(O)OOD produced OD with greater rotational excitation. The predicted [OH]/[OD] ratio is 0.20 for O((1)D) + HCOOD and 4.08 for O((1)D) + DCOOH; the former agrees satisfactorily with experiments. We also observed the v3 emission from the product CO2. This emission band is deconvoluted into two components corresponding to internal energies E = 317 and 96 kJ mol(-1) of CO2, predicted to be produced via direct dehydration of HOC(O)OH and secondary decomposition of HC(O)O that was produced via decomposition of HC(O)OOH, respectively.

Backgrounds: We reported the short- and long-term results of our institutional single center registry Interatrial Septum Interventions Study (ISIS) about the impact of different anatomic characteristics and related device selection in patent foramen ovale (PFO) closure., Methods: Over a 9 year period (September 2003-September 2012) we prospectively enrolled 340 consecutive patients (mean age 44 ± 15. 5 years, 198 females) who had been referred to our center for PFO catheter-based closure. The first 105 patients received a single type of device independently from the anatomy (single device strategy). The remaining 235 patients received a different device based on intracardiac echocardiographic study of interatrial septum anatomy (anatomic strategy)., Results: Immediate success rate was 100% in both groups, whereas the rate of immediate complications was 10.4% and 2.5% (P<0.01) in the single strategy group and anatomic strategy group, respectively. During a mean follow-up of 59.3 ± 28.9 months, the occlusion rate was 86.6% and 94%, whereas the incidence of recurrences was 1.8% and 0% in the single device strategy group and anatomic strategy group, respectively., Conclusion: The results from ISIS registry showed that anatomy of interatrial septum associated with PFO is quite complex leading to an increased rate of complications and a slightly lower closure rate if treated with a single device strategy., (© 2013, Wiley Periodicals, Inc.)

Congenital coronary anomalies remain a debated issue. On the basis of a critical review of the literature and our historical series, we propose a simple clinical profile scoring system for congenital coronary anomalies. A review of literature over the past 30 years was performed, searching for a relationship between the worst coronary anomaly presentation and manifestations and the anatomical and functional features. A risk scoring system was created based on these features, and retrospectively applied to our historical series of 140 consecutive patients (52 females; mean age, 60.1±19.3 years; mean follow-up, 60±23 months). Origin from the pulmonary artery, intramural course, intramyocardial course, coronary fistula with a significant pulmonary-to-systemic flow ratio, superimposed coronary artery disease, and associated congenital heart disease were associated with the worst clinical presentation. The risk scoring system gave 2 points to anatomical features and 1 point to the association with clinical and functional characteristics: 3 risk classes were identified: >3, 2-3, and <2 points. The system showed good correlation with presentation and manifestations on follow-up. Although not exhaustive, the proposed scoring system may simplify the clinical evaluation of patients with such abnormalities, being a model for decision making.

We report on a comprehensive study of electrical and optical properties of efficient near-infrared p⁺-i-n⁺ photodetectors based on large ensembles of self-assembled, vertically aligned i-n⁺ InP nanowires monolithically grown on a common p⁺ InP substrate without any buffer layer. The nanowires have a polytype modulated crystal structure of wurtzite and zinc blende. The electrical data display excellent rectifying behavior with an ideality factor of about 2.5 at 300 K. The ideality factor scales with 1/T, which possibly reflects deviations from classical transport models due to the mixed crystal phase of the nanowires. The observed dark leakage current is of the order of merely ∼100 fA/nanowire at 1 V reverse bias. The detectors display a linear increase of the photocurrent with reverse bias up to about 10 pA/nanowire at 5 V. From spectrally resolved measurements, we conclude that the photocurrent is primarily generated by funneling photogenerated carriers from the substrate into the NWs. Contributions from direct excitation of the NWs become increasingly important at low temperatures. The photocurrent decreases with temperature with an activation energy of about 50 meV, which we discuss in terms of a temperature-dependent diffusion length in the substrate and perturbed transport through the mixed-phase nanowires.

Objective: We sought to prospectively evaluate long-term follow-up results of intracardiac echocardiography-aided transcatheter closure of complex atrial septal defects (ASD) in the adults., Design and Settings: Prospective multicenter registry in tertiary care hospitals., Patients and Interventions: Over a 5-year period, we prospectively enrolled 56 patients (mean age 49 ± 16.7 years, 24 females) who have been referred to our center for catheter-based closure of complex secundum ASD (> 25 mm diameter, deficiency of ≥ 1 rim, multiple secundum ASD, multiperforated ASD, associated incomplete floor of the fossa ovalis with or without aneurysm, embryonic remnants of incomplete atrial septation). All patients were screened by means of transesophageal echocardiography before the operation. Eligible patients underwent intracardiac echocardiography study and closure attempt., Results: Forty patients underwent a transcatheter closure attempt: transesophageal echocardiography-planned device type and size were modified in 32 patients (64%). Rates of procedural success, predischarge occlusion, and major complications rate were 100%, 90%, and 2%, respectively. On mean follow-up of 5.4 ± 1.8 years, the follow-up occlusion rate was 98%. During follow-up, only one case of permanent atrial fibrillation was observed. There were no cases of aortic/atrial erosion, device thrombosis, or new atrioventricular valve dysfunction., Conclusions: Intracardiac echocardiography-guided complex secundum ASD transcatheter closure is safe and effective and appears to have excellent long-term results, thus minimizing potential complications resulting from the complex anatomy., (© 2011 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.)
