Abstract Beam‐matched linear accelerators (linacs) enable flexible patient scheduling and efficient treatment delivery in the event of unexpected machine downtime. The purpose of this study was to test the feasibility of 3D gamma index as an additional metric beyond standard measurement‐based comparisons for more efficient evaluation of treatment plans between linacs with nominally matched beam models to ensure safe patient transfer. Seventeen 3D conformal radiotherapy (3DCRT) plans and thirty‐six volumetric‐modulated radiation therapy (VMAT) plans for different disease sites were selected from the original linac. An in‐house script was used to automatically create new plans for the target linac and calculate dose using parameters of the original plans. 3D gamma analysis was performed to compare plan dose distributions between the target and original linacs using PyMedPhys. The 2%/2 mm gamma pass (γ≤1) rate was >99.99% for all 3DCRT plans. The median 1%/1 mm pass rate was 99.86% but two cases failed (< 90%). For VMAT plans, the median and minimum 2%/2 mm gamma pass rates were 99.43% and 93.81%. For 1%/1 mm, the median pass rate was 92.02% but ten cases failed. The results indicated using 3D gamma index can enhance the confidence and add an extra layer for safe patient transfer.

Review of Bharat Ranganathan, _On Helping One's Neighbor: Severe Poverty and the Religious Ethics of Obligation_

AbstractIn a supportive and immersive environment, engaging in English extracurricular activities is crucial for university students as it enhances their language skills, cultivates valuable communication and teamwork abilities, and significantly alleviates their anxiety levels. This quantitative study aimed to examine the causality between the independent variable (intervention in English extracurricular activities—EECAs) and the dependent variable (learners’ anxiety levels) using the Foreign Language Anxiety Scale developed by Horwitz et al. Data were collected from a sample of 306 first-year students at a university in Vietnam through self-report surveys administered both before and after participating in EECAs. The analysis of the collected data employed descriptive statistics and paired sample t-tests, revealing a causal relationship between participation in these activities and language learners’ anxiety levels. The results revealed that active involvement in extracurricular activities may reduce learners’ anxiety levels. These findings emphasize the significance of considering the potential impact of extracurricular activities on learners’ anxiety levels and call for further research and interventions to address and alleviate anxiety in language learners involved in such activities.

Transforming growth factor-beta 1 (TGF-β1) is a critical regulator of skeletal homeostasis and has diverse effects on osteoblastogenesis. To date, the mechanisms behind the intriguing inhibitory effect of TGF-β1 on osteoblast maturation are not fully understood. Here, we demonstrate a novel mechanism by which TGF-β1 modulates osteoblast maturation through the lysosomal protease legumain. We observed that addition of TGF-β1 to osteogenic cultures of human bone marrow derived mesenchymal stromal (stem) cells enhanced legumain activity and secretion, in-spite of decreased legumain mRNA expression, suggesting post-transcriptional regulation. We further showed that osteogenic cells internalize and activate prolegumain, associated with inhibited osteoblast maturation, revealing legumain as a paracrine regulator of osteoblast maturation. Interestingly, TGF-β1 treatment exacerbated legumain internalization and activity, and showed an additive effect on legumain-induced inhibition of osteoblast maturation. Importantly, pharmacological inhibition of legumain abolished the inhibitory effect of TGF-β1 on osteoblast maturation. Our findings reveal that TGF-β1 inhibits osteoblast maturation by stimulating secretion and activity of endogenous legumain, as well as enhancing internalization and activation of extracellular prolegumain. Therefore, our study provides a deeper understanding of the complex regulation of osteoblastogenesis and unveils a novel TGF-β1-legumain axis in regulation of osteoblast maturation, offering novel insights for possible therapeutic interventions related to bone diseases associated with aberrant TGF-β1 signaling.

Rickettsiae, which are obligate intracellular bacterial parasites, have a life cycle commonly associated with arthropod vectors and animal hosts. Rodents are recognized as their natural reservoir hosts and play a role in transmitting the bacteria to humans through arthropod vectors. The true extent of rickettsial infections in Vietnam remains underestimated due to a limited understanding of the disease’s epidemiology, resulting in a significant public health burden.The aim of this investigation was to assess the prevalence of Rickettsia in wild-living rodents in Dien Bien, Son La, and Phu Tho provinces of Northern Vietnam between 2020 and 2022.Materials and methods. A total of 396 wild-living rodents were collected from the Northern provinces of Vietnam during 2020–2022. Real-time polymerase chain reaction (PCR) was employed to detect the percentage of Rickettsia-positive specimens. Subsequently, the ompB and 17kDa genes were extracted, amplified, and sequenced from the Rickettsia-positive rodents.Results and discussion. Among the 396 rodents examined, the majority were Rattus norvegicus (56.1%), followed by R. tanezumi (37.4%), R. nitidus (2.5%), and R. germaini (1.8%). R. korodentsensis and R. argentiverter constituted the remaining rodents, accounting for 2.2% of the total. The real-time PCR analysis revealed that 27 blood samples out of the 396 rodent samples collected, tested positive for Rickettsia (6.81%). R. germaini was shown to have the highest positive rate 1/8 (12.5%), followed by R. nitidus 1/10 (10.0%), R. tanezumi 14/149 (9.5%), and R. norvegicus 11/222 (4.9%). No other tick-borne pathogens were detected in any of the provinces. Sequencing of the positive samples as regards the ompB and 17kDa genes revealed the closest relation to R. felis. These findings highlight the potentially high risk of R. felis infection in humans and animals within the studied areas.

In Vietnam, forests provide many economic benefits, contributing to stabilizing livelihoods for people living in mountainous areas. Forest pricing policies provide excellent opportunities for the forestry industry to help society and stakeholders correctly and sufficiently identify the value of forests. This study employed a combination of Sentinel-2 multispectral optical remote sensing technology and field surveys to value the forests in the Kon Ha Nung Plateau area. The results yielded a high- accuracy map of the current forest status in the study area, with an overall accuracy of 86.11% and a kappa of 0.849, which served as the basis for determining the planted forest area. This map encompassed 3,692.4 hectares and featured 11 forest tree species, planted in two main forms: single species and combined. We selected a pilot to assess the value of plantations for two major tree species in the area: Acacia and Eucalyptus. In conjunction with local forestry development policy frameworks, the results of field surveys help determine the economic sources of forests through the payment of forest environmental services and forest protection assignments. The research results can aid in evaluating the effectiveness of activities related to local forest management policies and stabilizing livelihoods for local people.

Background Lectins are carbohydrate-binding protein domains. The C-type lectin designates a requirement for calcium for binding. Proteins contain C-type lectin domains that have a diverse range of functions, including cell-cell adhesion, immune response to pathogens, and apoptosis. This study aimed to investigate the characters of LvCTL-encoding genes from white-leg shrimp (Litopenaeus vannamei) in Central Vietnam. Methods Two PCR products (LvCTL3 and LvCTL4) were cloned and sequenced. The structure and characterization of LvCTL proteins were predicted using bioinformatics tools. Results The results showed that the LvCTL3 gene was 444 nucleotides in length and 98.87% similar to the published LvCTL3 gene (accession number: KF156943). The polypeptide sequence had 147 amino acids, which were 97.28% identical to the reference sequence (AGV68681) and the LvCTL4 gene had a length of 417 nucleotides and homology of 99.52% compared to the published gene (KM387560). The deduced polypeptide sequence had 138 amino acids, and was 100% similar to the reference sequence (AKA64754). The LvCTL3 had a molecular weight of 16.91 kDa and an isoelectric point (pI) of 4.66, while LvCTL4 had 15.75 and 4.58 kDa, respectively. The structure prediction results showed that LvCTL3 and LvCTL4 had one domain (CTLD), LvCTL3 had two α helices and nine β sheets, and LvCTL4 had two α helices and eight β sheets. Conclusions Our results provide essential information for the heterologous expression and biosynthesis production of C-type lectins.

Aim: To identify factors associated with willingness to participate in a COVID-19 clinical trial and reasons for and against participating. Materials & methods: We surveyed Massachusetts (MA, USA) residents online using the Dynata survey platform and via phone using random digit dialing between October and November 2021. Respondents were asked to imagine they were hospitalized with COVID-19 and invited to participate in a treatment trial. We assessed willingness to participate by asking, “Which way are you leaning” and why. We used multivariate logistic regression to model factors associated with leaning toward participation. Open-ended responses were analyzed using conventional content analysis. Results: Of 1071 respondents, 65.6% leaned toward participating. Multivariable analyses revealed collegeeducation (OR: 1.59; 95% CI: 1.11, 2.27), trust in the healthcare system (OR: 1.32; 95% CI: 1.10, 1.58) and relying on doctors (OR: 1.77; 95% CI: 1.45, 2.17) and family or friends (OR: 1.31; 95% CI: 1.11, 1.54) to make health decisions were significantly associated with leaning toward participating. Respondents with lower health literacy (OR: 0.57; 95% CI: 0.36, 0.91) and who identify as Black (OR: 0.40; 95% CI: 0.24, 0.68), Hispanic (OR: 0.61; 95% CI: 0.38, 0.98), or republican (OR: 0.61; 95% CI: 0.38, 0.97) were significantly less likely to lean toward participating. Common reasons for participating included helping others, benefitting oneself and deeming the study low risk. Common reasons for leaning against were deeming the study high risk, disliking experimental treatments and not wanting to be a guinea pig. Conclusion: Our finding that vulnerable individuals and those with lower levels of trust in the healthcare system are less likely to be receptive to participating in a COVID-19 clinical trial highlights thatwork is needed to achieve a healthcare system that provides confidence to historically disadvantaged groups that their participation in research will benefit their community.

Vietnamese women have historically been obligated to practice four womanly virtues because of the influence of Confucian values. Confucian concepts and practices correlate to Christian virtue ethics by stressing the practice of good acts and the avoidance of evil through the practice of special virtues that are strictly observed and reflected in a moral life, leading to the perfection of oneself. There is a connection between the Catholic virtues of justice, charity, solidarity, and wisdom and the four Vietnamese womanly virtues because modern Vietnamese women are expected to utilize these virtues to promote the common good in society and the family. Despite the negative influence of Confucian values that results in the societal oppression of women, both the practice of virtue ethics and Vietnamese womanly virtues allows one to become a more perfect person. The Virgin Mary is considered a virtuous and perfect woman because she lived and practiced the virtues in her life. This article considers how Vietnamese womanly virtues are linked with Marian virtues through the context of virtue ethics to illustrate a linkage between Confucian and Catholic virtues. This can help enhance the relevance of Catholic teaching in the Vietnamese church.

Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is characterized by chronic inflammation of the gastrointestinal (GI) tract. Fecal calprotectin (fCAL) is a noninvasive laboratory test used in the diagnosis and monitoring of IBDs such as Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis. The fCAL send-out test that our facility has been offering so far uses an ELISA-based method. In the current study, we sought to validate the performance of a Buhlmann fCAL turbo assay in an automated Abbott Alinity C analyzer (AFCAL) in our core laboratory. Five-day imprecision studies showed good performance for both within-run (5.3%) and between-day (2.5%) measurements. The reportable range was verified as 30–20,000 µg/g. Deming regression and Bland–Altman analysis indicated a strong correlation of r = 0.99 with a low, acceptable bias of 1.8% for AFCAL relative to the predicate Buhlmann fCAL ELISA results. AFCAL’s clinical performance was determined retrospectively in 62 patients with ICD codes for IBD. Overall, the implementation of AFCAL in our routine clinical testing has improved our turnaround time, reduced the cost per test, and significantly increased our clinician satisfaction.

This paper implements two novel meta-heuristic algorithms, including the Coati optimization algorithm (COA) and War strategy optimization (WSO) for determining the optimal solutions to the optimal power flow problem incorporating the use of wind turbines (WTs). Two objective functions are considered in this study, including minimizing the entire electricity generation expenditure (EEGE) with the value point effect and minimizing the voltage fluctuation index (VFI). IEEE 30-bus system is chosen to conduct the whole study and validate the efficiency of the two applied methods. Furthermore, DFIG WTs are used in grids with varying power output and power factor ranges. The comparison of the results obtained from the two methods in all case studies reveals that WSO is vastly superior to COA in almost all aspects. In addition, the positive contributions of WTs to the EEGE and VFI while they are properly placed in the grid are also clarified by using WSO. As a result, WSO is acknowledged as a highly effective search method for dealing with such optimal power flow (OPF) problems considering the presence of renewable energy sources.

In the present work, a deep learning-based network called LeNet is applied for accurate grassland map production from Sentinel-2 data for the Greater Sydney region, Australia. First, we apply the technique to the base date Sentinel-2 data (non-seasonal) to make the vegetation maps. Then, we combine short time-series (seasonal) data and enhanced vegetation index (EVI) information to the base date imagery to improve the classification results and generate high-resolution grassland maps. The proposed model obtained an overall accuracy (OA) of 88.36% for the mono-temporal data, and 92.74% for the multi-temporal data. The experimental products proved that, by combining the short time-series images and EVI information to the base date, the classification maps' accuracy is increased by 4.38%. Moreover, the Sentinel-2 produced grassland maps are compared with the pre-existing maps such as Australian Land Use and Management (ALUM) 50 m resolution and Dynamic Land Cover Dataset (DLCD) with 250 m resolution as well as some traditional machine learning methods such as Support Vector Machine (SVM) and Random Forest (RF). The results show the effect of the LeNet network's performance and efficiency for grassland map production from short time-series data. As a result, decision-makers and urban planners can benefit from this work in terms of grassland change identification, monitoring, and planning assessment.

Locked thumb metacarpophalangeal (MCP) joint has been known as a relatively rare condition. We present a case of a 25-year-old male presented with a traumatic locked thumb MCP joint of the right hand. Clinical presentation showed the joint was in a hyperextention position and resistant to active flexion and extension. The radial sesamoid was distally displaced on X-ray film and entrapped into the joint on CT scan. The mechanism of the locked MCP joint was thought as a “pull-hook lock” between the pointed proximal edge of the sesamoid and the deformed volar groove on the cartilaginous surface of the metacarpal head. Surgical treatment included partially releasing the insertion of the abductor pollicis brevis (APB) and flexor pollicis brevis (FPB) muscles to move the entrapped radial sesamoid, and resurfacing the deformed metacarpal head.

BackgroundAtrial fibrillation (AF) and mitral regurgitation (MR) have a complex interplay. Catheter ablation (CA) of AF may be a potential method to improve the severity of MR in AF patients.MethodsPatients with symptomatic AF and moderate to severe MR who underwent catheter ablation from 2011 to 2021 were retrospectively included in the study. Patients' baseline characteristics and electrophysiological features were examined. These patients were classified as group 1 with improved MR and group 2 with refractory MR after CA.ResultsFifty patients (age 60.2 ± 11.6 years, 29 males) were included in the study (32 in group 1 and 18 in group 2). Group 1 patients had a lower CHA2DS2-VASc score (1.7 ± 1.5 vs. 2.7 ± 1.5, P = 0.005) and had a lower incidence of hypertension (28.1% vs. 66.7%, P = 0.007) and diabetes mellitus (3.1% vs. 22.2%, P = 0.031) as compared to group 2 patients. Electroanatomic three-dimensional (3D) mapping showed that group 1 patients demonstrated less scars on the posterior bottom of the left atrium compared to group 2 patients (12.5% vs. 66.7%, P

Subsurface dam is a dam system that built in earth’s worb to reserve water and to increase levels of aquifer ground. Region with harsh climate conditions, low rainfall, land is uncultivated, low level of ground water then capacity to provide water is limited. Therefore, subsurface dam is a solution to help to improve the groundwater table, provide water during dry season. At coastal land, beside the advantage of reserve water, the subsurface dam also helps to present infiltration of salt water. This article discusses about subsurface dam, solutions to build the subsurface dam and its application scale, advantages and disadvantages of applying subsurface dams in Vietnam. Moreover, the author proposes solutions for water supply to areas which are shortage of water in Ninh Thuan province, Vietnam.

Background: Eosinophilic granulomatosis with polyangiitis is a rare clinical condition with multiple organ involvement. We report a case of a 64-year-old male patient who presented with symptoms of chronic rhinosinusitis, numbness, and pain in both lower limbs, weight loss of 6 kg/3 months, and subcutaneous vasculitis lesions along the forearms and legs on both sides. The patient had peripheral eosinophilia with an eosinophil count of 11.6%, eosinophil count of 1.56G/l, positive pANCA test, and electromyography results showing damage to the left calf nerve, bilateral superficial peroneal nerve, and left deep peroneal nerve with axonal loss. Biopsy results of calf muscle showed chronic granulomatous vasculitis. The patient was diagnosed with eosinophilic granulomatosis with polyangiitis (EGPA) according to the ACR/EULAR 2022 criteria. The patient was given intravenous Methylprednisolone, followed by maintenance treatment with reduced doses of Corticosteroids and Methotrexate. The patient’s leg pain was significantly reduced, numbness in both lower limbs was reduced, and the patient’s quality of life was improved. Methods: clinical case report. Results: The patient’s peripheral polyneuropathy and subcutaneous vasculitis were significantly reduced after treatment with Corticosteroids and Methotrexate. Conclusion: Eosinophilic granulomatosis with polyangiitis is a rare clinical condition with manifestations of multiple organ damage. Timely detection and diagnosis help increase treatment effectiveness and improve clinical symptoms for patients.

Legumain is a lysosomal cysteine protease that has been implicated in an increasing amount of physiological and pathophysiological processes. However, the upstream mechanisms regulating the expression and function of legumain are not well understood. Here, we provide in vitro and in vivo data showing that vitamin D3 (VD3) enhances legumain expression and function. In turn, legumain alters VD3 bioavailability, possibly through proteolytic cleavage of vitamin D binding protein (VDBP). Active VD3 (1,25(OH)2D3) increased legumain expression, activity, and secretion in osteogenic cultures of human bone marrow stromal cells. Upregulation of legumain was also observed in vivo, evidenced by increased legumain mRNA in the liver and spleen, as well as increased legumain activity in kidneys from wild-type mice treated with 25(OH)D3 (50 µg/kg, subcutaneously) for 8 days compared to a control. In addition, the serum level of legumain was also increased. We further showed that active legumain cleaved purified VDBP (55 kDa) in vitro, forming a 45 kDa fragment. In vivo, no VDBP cleavage was found in kidneys or liver from legumain-deficient mice (Lgmn−/−), whereas VDBP was cleaved in wild-type control mice (Lgmn+/+). Finally, legumain deficiency resulted in increased plasma levels of 25(OH)D3 and total VD3 and altered expression of key renal enzymes involved in VD3 metabolism (CYP24A1 and CYP27B1). In conclusion, a regulatory interplay between VD3 and legumain is suggested.

This paper proposes a posture recognition system that can be applied for medical surveillance. The proposed method estimates human posture using mobilenetV2 and long short-term memory (LSTM) to extract the important features of an image. The output of the system was a fully estimated skeleton. We used seven human indoor postures, including lying, sitting, crouching, standing, walking, fighting, and falling, and classified them. The output results are the extraction of the human skeleton and the corresponding labels for the poses. We first experiment with classification using machine learning. The system only achieves approximately 88% accuracy because it is not able to classify similar postures, such as standing and walking. This difference can be caused by the extraction of features for static images, and the machine learning classification algorithm has not reached accuracy with training data. Therefore, we proposed the integration of the LSTM model into the proposed system. LSTM learns the features of the skeleton and provides classification results for postures. As a result, our system improved the accuracy by up to 99%. Similar postures, such as standing and walking, have improved accuracy by up to 7%. In addition, we performed the system on the Jetson Nano hardware. The results show that it can run on a low-profile (44% CPU and 2.1 frames per second) that is capable of applications for remote patient monitoring devices.

Background The role of uric acid is gaining increasing importance in the evaluation of cardiovascular disease, but its relationship with atrial fibrillation (AF) is unclear. This study aims to investigate the association between uric acid levels and risk of new‐onset AF. Methods and Results A total of 339 604 individuals 30 to 60 years of age and free from cardiovascular disease at baseline (1985–1996) in the Swedish AMORIS (Apolipoprotein‐Mortality Risk) cohort were followed until December 31, 2019 for incident AF. Cox regression models were used to examine the association between uric acid and AF, adjusting for potential confounders and stratifying by incident cardiovascular disease. Over a mean follow‐up of 25.9 years, 46 516 incident AF cases occurred. Compared with the lowest uric acid quartile, each of the upper 3 quartiles were associated with an increased risk of AF in a dose–response manner. Adjusted hazard ratios were 1.09 (95% CI, 1.06–1.12) for second quartile, 1.19 (95% CI, 1.16–1.23) for third quartile, and 1.45 (95% CI, 1.41–1.49) for fourth quartile. The association was similar among individuals with and without incident hypertension, diabetes, heart failure, or coronary heart disease. The dose–response pattern was further supported in a subsample of individuals with repeated measurements of uric acid. Conclusions Elevated uric acid was associated with an increased risk of AF, not only among people with cardiovascular disease and cardiovascular risk factors but also among those without. Future investigations are needed to examine whether lowering uric acid is relevant for AF prevention.

There are many researches on different aspects of responsibility accounting system, but none of those researches has focused on the impact of responsibility accounting system on the performance of textile enterprises. The aim of this paper is to identify factors affecting the implementation of responsibility accounting and its effect on the performance of Vietnamese listed textile companies. Using the qualitative and quantitative methodology, qualitative method was used to prepare the questionnaire, while quantitative method was used to measure the scale and analyze the level of impact of each factor. Further, the study employs the Structural equation modeling (SEM) with AMOS—SPSS, results show that factors in the research model aside from measurement technology and level of competition had certain impacts, including the ability of accounting staffs (TDKT), the awareness of managers at different level (NTQL), the decentralization (PQQL), the reward systems (HTKT), and the forecast for responsibility centers (DTTT). In addition, the structural management (CCTC), the competitive strategy (CLCT), the competitive advantages (YTCT) and the responsibility centers’ reports (BCTT) that have greatly affected performance of listed firms. In addition, the implementation of responsibility accounting has the greatest effect on the performance of listed companies. In fact, the implementation of responsibility accounting changes by 1 point (level), it will increase/decrease the performance of listed companies by 0.409 points without considering the other factors

The postharvest preservation of Ngoc Linh ginseng (NL ginseng) is essential to retain its quality and sensory values for prolonged storage. In this study, the efficacy of NL ginseng preservation by coating chitosan derivatives in combination with polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) solutions was investigated under refrigeration conditions (~3 °C; ~40% RH) for 56 days. The effect of the chitosan–based solutions, including N,O–carboxymethyl chitosan (NOCC), chitosan oligomer saccharide (COS), or chitosan (CS), and the blend solutions (NOCC–PVA or COS–PVA) on the coated NL ginsengs was observed during storage. The pH values, viscosity, and film-forming capability of the coating solutions were determined, while the visual appearance, morphology, and mechanical properties of the films formed on glass substrates as a ginseng model for coating were also observed. The appearance, skin lightness, weight loss, sensory evaluation, total saponin content (TSC), total polyphenol content (TPC), and total antioxidant capacity (TAC) of the coated NL ginsengs were evaluated. The findings showed that the observed values of the coated NL ginsengs were better than those of the non-coated samples, with the exception of the COS–coated samples, which had completely negative results. Furthermore, the NOCC–PVA solution exhibited a better preservation effect compared with the COS–PVA one based on the observed indices, except for TPC and TAC, which were not impacted by the coating. Notably, the optimal preservation time was determined to be 35 days. This study presents promising preservation technology using the coating solution of NOCC–PVA, harnessing the synergistic effect of pH 7.4 and the form–firming capacity, to maintain the shelf life, medicinal content, and sensory attributes of NL ginseng.

For a recent publication, the authors identified a seven-region model of mammal family distribution patterns, in which each unit contributes equally to the system’s overall statistical characteristics of diversity, despite its individual units having measurably different levels of diversity and endemism. This systemization presents a highly efficient descriptive model that can possibly be interpreted as a form of natural classification. An additional analysis of the same mode is described here, in which the seven-region model of the distribution of mammal families’ spatial affinities is shown to closely approach a most-probable-state arrangement, as assessed through combinatorics, raising some important questions about how macroevolutionary patterns might self-organize spatially. One of the possible practical applications of the overall approach is to areal representation; statistical moments of the underlying world patterns can be used to characterize faunal statuses at any individual location by relating the latter to the former. Through this approach, classical concepts such as corridors, tracks, and transition zones might be re-examined in a manner that better lends itself to hypothesis testing. An arbitrarily chosen bounded area, the conterminous United States, is treated in this fashion by way of illustration.

The investigation of novel sample matrices in the forensic sciences offers several possible advantages, such as allowing for results to be obtained in cases where common sample types are absent. This review focuses on the application of gas chromatography and gas chromatography–mass spectrometry (GC-MS) for the determination of drugs in alternative sample matrices, including hair, sweat, meconium, breast milk, and vitreous humour. Less common sample types are also reported including air, cerumen, insects, and their larvae and pupae. The application of pyrolysis GC-MS (Py GC-MS) is also reviewed, showing the possibility of determining high molecular weight drugs which would commonly be unattainable by GC-MS. The application of Py GC-MS for the simulation and investigation of the underlying chemistry and the products formed in the smoking of drugs is also reported.

The interplay between skeletal muscle and bone is primarily mechanical; however, biochemical crosstalk by secreted mediators has recently gained increased attention. The aim of this study was to investigate metabolic effects of conditioned medium from osteoblasts (OB-CM) on myotubes and vice versa. Human skeletal muscle cells incubated with OB-CM showed increased glucose uptake and oxidation, and mRNA expression of the glucose transporter (GLUT) 1, while fatty acid uptake and oxidation, and mRNA expression of the fatty acid transporter CD36 were decreased. This was supported by proteomic analysis, where expression of proteins involved in glucose uptake, glycolytic pathways, and the TCA cycle were enhanced, and expression of several proteins involved in fatty acid metabolism were reduced. Similar effects on energy metabolism were observed in human bone marrow stromal cells differentiated to osteoblastic cells incubated with conditioned medium from myotubes (SKM-CM), with increased glucose uptake and reduced oleic acid uptake. Proteomic analyses of the two conditioned media revealed many common proteins. Thus, our data may indicate a shift in fuel preference from fatty acid to glucose metabolism in both cell types, induced by conditioned media from the opposite cell type, possibly indicating a more general pattern in communication between these tissues.

Abstract Temperature extremes have been extensively observed on the Tibetan Plateau (TP), of which the dynamics were mostly monitored by traditional trend analysis based on linear regression. This method however, is often impacted by a quasi‐periodic heterogeneity disturbance in variance, leading to results susceptible to extreme outliers. In this study, we conducted the comprehensive detection of extreme temperature changes using quantile regression on the TP from 100 weather stations from 1979 to 2019. The use of quantile regression enabled us to characterize the entire density function of the extreme temperature time‐series (the daily minimum, mean and maximum temperature) at each location. Our results revealed that the daily minimum temperature was generally warming faster than the daily maximum and mean temperatures with the respective trend interval of [−0.45, 1.29], [−0.1, 0.98], [−0.01, 1.01] °C/decade among the conditional quantile levels. Furthermore, the warming rate of extremely cold (0.05 quantile level) and hot days (0.95 quantile level) was higher than that of the mean condition (0.5 quantile level) in each extreme temperature time‐series. We also found that there was a significant elevation‐dependent warming only in extremely cold days. In addition, results from the teleconnection analysis showed that the Arctic Oscillation had a strong influence on the extreme cold and hot extremes over the northern and southwestern TP region, while the El Niño‐Southern Oscillation mainly modulated temperatures over the southeastern TP area. This study can potentially offer improved understanding of the temperature extremes over TP in the face of global warming.

Background:. Skin cancer education targeted to patients’ needs is a goal of practicing dermatologists. Data regarding dermatology patients’ baseline knowledge regarding skin cancer could aid clinicians in tailoring education efforts. Objective:. To help quantify existing patients’ existing visual recognition of skin cancer and common benign lesions, with the goal of helping to provide more targeted and meaningful education to patients. Methods:. Two hundred forty-four adult patients from the dermatology clinics at University of Oklahoma and Loyola University Chicago were surveyed using digital images and questions regarding personal and family history of skin cancer, sun protection practices and sun protection knowledge. Results:. Of the 244 subjects, 43% percent had a positive personal history of skin cancer, 40% had a positive family history. Scores differed minimally by personal history of skin cancer (p = .37) but differed more markedly by family history of skin cancer (p = .02). Limitations:. Lack of generalizability to the general public, age range of subjects. Conclusions:. There are knowledge gaps within the dermatology patient population regarding common benign and malignant skin lesions.

The estrous cycle is regulated by rhythmic endocrine interactions of the nervous and reproductive systems, which coordinate the hormonal and ovulatory functions of the ovary. Folliculogenesis and follicle progression require the orchestrated response of a variety of cell types to allow the maturation of the follicle and its sequela, ovulation, corpus luteum formation, and ovulatory wound repair. Little is known about the cell state dynamics of the ovary during the estrous cycle and the paracrine factors that help coordinate this process. Herein, we used single-cell RNA sequencing to evaluate the transcriptome of >34,000 cells of the adult mouse ovary and describe the transcriptional changes that occur across the normal estrous cycle and other reproductive states to build a comprehensive dynamic atlas of murine ovarian cell types and states.

This paper presents a new equivalent stiffness-based load transfer model for an open-ended pipe pile. The main idea of this model is to replace the sum of unit stiffnesses corresponding with external and internal unit skin frictions in the basic differential equation of load transfer by a weighted average of equivalent unit stiffnesses using a dual approach of equivalent replacement. The contribution of external and internal skin frictions to equivalent unit stiffnesses is evaluated by normalized dimensionless weighting coefficients in the form of average value with the penetration depth. Application of new load transfer model to a jacked open-ended pile concerning semi-empirical models of external and internal unit skin frictions leads to corresponding explicit expressions of weighting coefficient. A computational example of a jacked open-ended pile is carried out. It is shown that the proposed equivalent stiffness-based load transfer model is an effective tool for analyzing behaviors of the open-ended pile in considering the soil plugging effect.

Sensors onboard the new generation of geostationary (GEO) satellites launched over past few years have much improved radiometric and temporal resolutions. As one of the latest GEO sensors, the Japanese Himawari-8 Advanced Himawari Imager (hereafter H8/AHI) has temporal resolution of 10 minutes and spectral bands similar to MODIS. Observations from H8/AHI therefore have the potential to improve the precision of vegetation phenology monitoring by significantly shortening the compositing period. In this study, we evaluated methods for compositing daily 2-band Enhanced Vegetation Index (EVI2) from 10-minutes H8/AHI observations at six study sites in northern China encompassing forest, cropland, and grassland. After screening the cloudy observations by a physics-based cloud detection algorithm, key phenological metrics were retrieved from the composited AHI EVI2. H8/AHI 10-min raw EVI2 showed significant diurnal variations that are mainly associated with sun angle variations. By calculating the daily average EVI2 values in different time intervals, we concluded that the mean value using a fixed time window (10:30–13:30) centered around local solar noon effectively reduced the anisotropy effect from the diurnal sun-angle variations, leading to stable EVI2 time series suitable for extracting phenological metrics. On average, the amount of the composited H8/AHI EVI2 time-series data was 5.3 times more than the Terra/Aqua combined MODIS EVI2 product per year and the average size (width) of the gaps in H8/AHI EVI2 time series was 75% smaller than that of the MODIS. Our results demonstrated the promising capability of the new generation GEO satellite for generating time series vegetation index with fewer cloud-induced gaps and higher temporal resolution, hence improving the monitoring of global vegetation phenology and ecosystem responses to climate change.

The aggregation of human Islet Amyloid Polypeptide (hIAPP) on cell membranes is linked to amyloid diseases. However, the physio-chemical mechanisms of how these hIAPP aggregates trigger membrane damage are unclear. Using coarse-grained and all-atom molecular dynamics simulations, we investigated the role of lipid nanodomains in the presence or absence of anionic lipids, phosphatidylserine (PS), and a ganglioside (GM1), in the membrane disruption and protein folding behaviors of hIAPP aggregates on phase-separated raft membranes. Our raft membranes contain liquid-ordered (Lo), liquid-disordered (Ld), mixed Lo/Ld (Lod), PS-cluster, and GM1-cluster nanosized domains. We observed that hIAPP aggregates bound to the Lod domain in the absence of anionic lipids, but also to the GM1-cluster- and PS-cluster-containing domains, with stronger affinity in the presence of anionic lipids. We discovered that L16 and I26 are the lipid anchoring residues of hIAPP binding to the Lod and PS-cluster domains. Finally, significant lipid acyl chain order disruption in the annular lipid shells surrounding the membrane-bound hIAPP aggregates and protein folding, particularly beta-sheet formation, in larger protein aggregates were evident. We propose that the interactions of hIAPP and both non-anionic and anionic lipid nanodomains represent key molecular events of membrane damage associated with the pathogenesis of amyloid diseases.

Accurate multi-scale object detection in remote sensing images poses a challenge due to the complexity of transferring deep features to shallow features among multi-scale objects. Therefore, this study developed a multi-feature fusion and attention network (MFANet) based on YOLOX. By reparameterizing the backbone, fusing multi-branch convolution and attention mechanisms, and optimizing the loss function, the MFANet strengthened the feature extraction of objects at different sizes and increased the detection accuracy. The ablation experiment was carried out on the NWPU VHR-10 dataset. Our results showed that the overall performance of the improved network was around 2.94% higher than the average performance of every single module. Based on the comparison experiments, the improved MFANet demonstrated a high mean average precision of 98.78% for 9 classes of objects in the NWPU VHR-10 10-class detection dataset and 94.91% for 11 classes in the DIOR 20-class detection dataset. Overall, MFANet achieved an mAP of 96.63% and 87.88% acting on the NWPU VHR-10 and DIOR datasets, respectively. This method can promote the development of multi-scale object detection in remote sensing images and has the potential to serve and expand intelligent system research in related fields such as object tracking, semantic segmentation, and scene understanding.

Biological evolution is generally regarded as a stochastic or probabilistic process, per the ideas of Darwin in the nineteenth century. Even if this is true at the meso-scale, it still may, however, be impacted by overarching constraints that we have not yet identified. In this paper, we revisit the subject of mammal faunal regions with a mind to explore a potential kind of macroevolutionary influence. We first identify an optimum seven-region mammal faunal classification system based on spatial and phylogenetic data from a comprehensive 2013 review, and then examine the possibility that this classification provides supporting evidence for a Spinoza-influenced philosophical/theoretical model of the “natural system” concept developed by one of the authors in the 1980s. The hierarchical pattern of regional affinities revealed does do this.

We created an eight-week virtual exchange (VE) programme called the Virtual Culture Trip which enabled 68 students from seven countries to engage in online intercultural interaction under the guidance of educators. This study investigated participants' perceived language skill improvement and intercultural competence (IC) after the programme, the change in their interest in the VE discussion topics, and the relationship between their self-perceived improvement and background factors. Quantitative and qualitative analyses were conducted on data obtained from the pre- and post-surveys of 48 students. Results showed that participants believed that their language skills and the four IC constructs (i.e., knowledge, attitudes, awareness and skills) significantly improved. They also seemed to become more interested in the discussion topics. Some statistically significant differences were observed in the abilities to use the language between males and females and these differences might also be associated with the interaction between gender and prior VE experience. Moreover, the interaction between age and English level led to statistically significant differences in their perceived development of intercultural skills. The study shed light on how VE conducted through English as a Lingua Franca can be an enabling means to facilitate interactions across Global North and Global South countries despite challenges posed by geographical immobility due to resource limitations or a global pandemic.

BackgroundApproximately 1. 07 million people in Vietnam are infected with hepatitis C virus (HCV). To address this epidemic, the South East Asian Research Collaborative in Hepatitis (SEARCH) launched a 600-patient cohort study and two clinical trials, both investigating shortened treatment strategies for chronic HCV infection with direct-acting antiviral drugs. We conducted ethnographic research with a subset of trial participants and found that the majority were aware of HCV infection and its implications and were motivated to seek treatment. However, people who inject drugs (PWID), and other groups at risk for HCV were under-represented, although injecting drug use is associated with high rates of HCV.Material and MethodsWe designed a community-based participatory research (CBPR) study to engage in dialogues surrounding HCV and other community-prioritized health issues with underserved groups at risk for HCV in Ho Chi Minh City. The project consists of three phases: situation analysis, CBPR implementation, and dissemination. In this paper, we describe the results of the first phase (i.e., the situation analysis) in which we conducted desk research and organized stakeholder mapping meetings with representatives from local non-government and community-based organizations where we used participatory research methods to identify and analyze key stakeholders working with underserved populations.ResultsTwenty six institutions or groups working with the key underserved populations were identified. Insights about the challenges and dynamics of underserved communities were also gathered. Two working groups made up of representatives from the NGO and CBO level were formed.DiscussionUsing the information provided by local key stakeholders to shape the project has helped us to build solid relationships, give the groups a sense of ownership from the early stages, and made the project more context specific. These steps are not only important preliminary steps for participatory studies but also for other research that takes place within the communities.

A common herbicide, atrazine, is associated with poor health. Atrazine acts as an endocrine disruptor at supra-environmental levels. Little research, however, has been conducted regarding chronic exposure to environmental atrazine concentrations across generations. This study utilized comprehensive endpoint measures to investigate the effects of chronic exposure to a conservative atrazine concentration (0.02 ng/mL), measured in Australian waterways, on male mice fertility across two generations. Mice were exposed through the maternal line, from the pre-conception period and through the F1 and F2 generations until three or six months of age. Atrazine did not impact sperm function, testicular morphology nor germ cell parameters but did alter the expression of steroidogenic genes in the F1, down-regulating the expression of Cyp17a1 (Cytochrome P450 family 17, subfamily A member 1; p = 0.0008) and Ddx4 (DEAD-box helicase 4; p = 0.007), and up-regulating the expression of Star (Steroidogenic acute regulatory protein; p = 0.017). In the F2, atrazine induced up-regulation in the expression of Star (p = 0.016). The current study demonstrates that chronic exposure to an environmentally relevant atrazine concentration perturbs testicular steroid-associated gene expression that varies across generations. Future studies through the paternal and combined parental lineages should be undertaken to further elucidate the multigenerational effects of atrazine on male fertility.

In the current development in Vietnam, more and more new urban areas are planned to serve and develop socioeconomic development. However, the establishment of an overall system of planning, construction, management, and development for urban development is still facing many difficulties. Especially the use of “2D drawings” in urban design, management, and operation, which will cause limitations in optimal urban planning. The application of Building Information Model (BIM) technology in urban planning, management, and operation is the current integration trend that is in line with the national digital transformation plan in the 4.0 revolution. Hence, the application of BIM also faces certain challenges and difficulties. This study analyzes the basis and legal framework for applying BIM while considering the technical infrastructure projects using BIM, thereby assessing the advantages, disadvantages, challenges, and solutions, and assessing the suitability for the application of BIM in infrastructure projects in Vietnam.

With the necessity of diversifying alcoholic beverages, cider has become a kind of drink that can fulfill this demand. This is because the cider will be diversified depending on the kinds of fruit that are chosen to be used for the cider fermentation. Therefore, this study aims to investigate the effects of dilution ratio, Brix, pH, and yeast concentration on the production of cider from king mandarin (Citrus nobilis Lour.), and to evaluate the analytical characteristics and antioxidant activity of the product. After the investigation, it can be claimed that the dilution of the juice causes the ethanol content to decrease, whereas the increase of Brix, pH, and yeast concentration makes the ethanol content increase. However, the proportional increase in the ethanol content with Brix, pH, and yeast concentration has its limitations. Specifically, when the Brix and the yeast concentrations were, respectively, higher than 16°Brix and 0.04%, the ethanol content tended to maintain the same. This is also the same when the pH was lower than 4.5. In addition, by using the DPPH and ABTS●+ methods, the antioxidant activity of cider is estimated to be lower than the one of the juice before fermentation, which is smaller than 3.78 times for the DPPH method and 3.76 times for the ABTS●+ method.

The research into and production of hematological reference samples used to implement an external quality assessment (EQA) to check the quality of hematology tests are necessary for hematology laboratories in Vietnam. In this research, the study team determined the assessment values of blood cell count (human RBCs, pseudo-leucocytes, and pseudo-platelets) by the impedance method used in hematology EQA programs. The hematological reference samples were controlled at three concentration levels: low, normal, and high. Determination of the assigned value (mean ± 2SD) was performed for the following hematology analyzer series by impedance method: ABX Micros 60, Celldyn 1700, and Mindray BC 2000. Each device was sent to 10 different laboratories for evaluation. Research results for assigned values of each model (ABX Micros 60, Celldyn 1700, and Mindray BC 2000) were determined at the three concentrations. For the ABX Micros 60 and Celldyn 1700 series, 80% of laboratories had analytical results within assigned values. For the Mindray BC 2000 series, 100% of laboratories had analytical results within assigned values. The measurement results for the number of human RBCs, pseudo-leucocytes, and pseudo-platelets on each analyzer were similar between the 10 laboratories; the results of the three hematology analyzer series using the impedance method were different and the difference was statistically significant (p < 0.05). Thus, hematological reference samples for measuring the number of blood cells meeting the standards so that they can evaluate the results of laboratories using the impedance method: ABX, Celldyn 1700, Mindray BC 2000.

Dynamic and non-linear systems have been used to generate random bits in high-security applications for decades. In this perspective, due to their stochastic characteristic, chaotic systems have been emerging as the natural choice for the generation of random bits. This paper presents the design and the implementation of a chaos-based true random number generator and a chaos-key based data encryption scheme for secure communications. The mathematical expression of the dynamic system is presented and analyzed to evaluate the possibility of chaos occurrence. Then, the chaotic system is realized at the circuit level using 130 nm CMOS technology to generate random bit sequences, which are utilized in data encryption. Chaotic signal outputs of the chaos-based random number generator circuit are sampled at a maximum frequency of 50 MHz, enabling a high throughput of random bits. The core of the chaotic circuit consumes $630~\mu \text{W}$ in static mode and a maximum of $660~\mu \text{W}$ in running mode. The chaos-based one-time pad encryption scheme using the chaos-key generator shows the advantages of using this random number generator in secure communications. In this context, the data secrecy is compared to the advanced encryption standard AES128. Moreover, the design is simulated in different working conditions such as voltage supply and temperature variations, where it is shown that the random bit output benefits from a high entropy per bit and passes the standard statistical test suite (NIST) for cryptographic applications.

Ti6Al4V alloys with low weight, high corrosion resistance, high melting point, high biocompatibility and unique mechanical properties have been receiving great attention for wide applicability in many industry fields such as automobiles, aerospace and biomedical. However, Ti6Al4V tends to be easily oxidized at high temperature, exhibit low thermal conductivity, low hardness and low yield strength and thus have led to the limitation of applicability in many industries. In this study, we have fabricated Ti6Al4V matrix composites reinforced with multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNT) to enhance the hardness and yield strength. Vacuum sintering technique has been used to prepare MWCNT/Ti6Al4V composites. Microstructural and phase studies indicated that the composite structure consists of two main phases including α-Ti and β-Ti and MWCNTs were uniformly dispersed in Ti6Al4V matrix. The relative density of composite decreases as the CNT content increases as resulted from the porous structure of the CNT, which limits the aggregation process of the composite. When the CNT content increased, the hardness and yield strength of the composite increased, reaching maximum values of 378 HV and 356 MPa with 2 vol.% MWCNTs, which are nearly 16 and 38% higher than those of Ti6Al4V alloy. The enhancement in hardness and compressive strength is attributed to the good mechanical properties of MWCNTs and load transfer effect from Ti6Al4V alloy matrix to reinforcement material.

Many studies have reported that the human body-balance ability was essential in the early detection and self-management of chronic diseases. However, devices to measure balance, such as motion capture and force plates, are expensive and require a particular space for installation as well as specialized knowledge for analysis. Therefore, this study aimed to propose and verify a new algorithm to score the human body-balance ability on the wobble board (HBBAWB), based on a geometric solution using a cheap and portable device. Although the center of gravity (COG), the projected point of the center of mass (COM) on the fixed ground, has been used as the index for the balance ability, generally, it was not proper to use the COG under the condition of no fixed environment. The reason was that the COG index did not include the information on the slope for the wobble. Thus, this study defined the new index as the perpendicular-projection point (PPP), which was the projected point of the COM on the tilted plane. The proposed geometric solution utilized the relationship among three points, the PPP, the COM, and the middle point between the two feet, via linear regression. The experimental results found that the geometric solution, which utilized the relationship between the three angles of the equivalent model, enabled us to score the HBBAWB.

Choline and related metabolites are key factors in many metabolic processes, and insufficient supply can adversely affect reproduction and fetal development. Choline status is mainly regulated by intake, and human milk is the only choline source for exclusively breastfed infants. Further, maternal status, genotype, and phenotype, as well as infant outcomes, have been related to milk choline concentrations. In order to enable the rapid assessment of choline intake for exclusively breastfed infants and to further investigate the associations between milk choline and maternal and infant status and other outcomes, we have developed a simplified method for the simultaneous analysis of human milk choline, glycerophosphocholine, phosphocholine, and the less abundant related metabolites betaine, carnitine, creatinine, dimethylglycine (DMG), methionine, and trimethylamine N-oxide (TMAO) using ultraperformance liquid chromatography–tandem mass spectrometry (UPLC–MS/MS). These analytes have milk concentrations ranging over 3 orders of magnitude. Unlike other recently described LC-based methods, our approach does not require an ion-pairing reagent or high concentrations of solvent modifiers for successful analyte separation and thus avoid signal loss and potential permanent contamination. Milk samples (10 μl) were diluted (1:80) in water : methanol (1:4, v:v) and filtered prior to analysis with an optimized gradient of 0.1% propionic acidaq and acetonitrile, allowing efficient separation and removal of contaminants. Recovery rates ranged from 108.0 to 130.9% (inter-day variation: 3.3–9.6%), and matrix effects (MEs) from 54.1 to 114.3%. MEs were greater for carnitine, creatinine, and TMAO at lower dilution (1:40, p < 0.035 for all), indicating concentration-dependent ion suppression. Milk from Brazilian women (2–8, 28–50, and 88–119 days postpartum, ntotal = 53) revealed increasing concentration throughout lactation for glycerophosphocholine, DMG, and methionine, while carnitine decreased. Choline and phosphocholine were negatively correlated consistently at all three collection time intervals. The method is suitable for rapid analysis of human milk water-soluble forms of choline as well as previously not captured related metabolites with minimal sample volumes and preparation.

The upstream construction of hydropower dams may drastically intensify climate change impacts due to changing the natural river flood-drought cycle and reducing the amount of water that flows into the lower Mekong Delta river, leading to hydrological and environmental health impacts. However, until now the influence of drought on residents’ health in the lower MDR, where river drought is highly sensitive to recently built hydropower plants, has not been examined. The objectives of this study are, for the first time, to detect the health impacts of river drought on residents and to evaluate the contribution of hydropower dams to the impacts of drought on health in the lower Mekong Delta Region (MDR). We applied the multi-step approaches of a Detection and Attribution study. First, we detected the effects of the river drought on the risk of hospitalization using a Multivariable Fractional Polynomials algorithm (MFP). Second, we linked the long-term changes of the river water level (RWL) to the operation of the first hydropower dam in the upper MDR using the interrupted time-series model (ITS). Finally, we quantified the hospitalizations and related economic loss attributed to the river drought. The results show that the percentage changes in risk of all-cause, respiratory, and renal hospitalizations attributed to the river drought were 2%, 2%, and 7%. There were significant reductions in average level and trend of the RWL during the post-1995 period, when the first hydropower dam began operation in the upper MDR, even though the cumulative rainfall in the MDR had not changed. The all-cause hospitalizations attributed to the river drought were 1134 cases during the period 1995–2014, which resulted in total additional cost at two provincial hospitals of US $360,385. This current study demonstrates the link between hydropower dams, river drought, and health impacts. As the MDR is highly vulnerable to climate change, these findings about the devastating impacts of hydropower dams and environmental change have important implications for the lives of downstream residents.

Background The cysteine protease legumain is increased in patients with atherosclerosis, but its causal role in atherogenesis and cardiovascular disease is still unclear. The aim of the study was to investigate the association of legumain with clinical outcome in a large cohort of patients with acute coronary syndrome. Methods and Results Serum levels of legumain were analyzed in 4883 patients with acute coronary syndrome from a substudy of the PLATO (Platelet Inhibition and Patient Outcomes) trial. Levels were analyzed at admission and after 1 month follow‐up. Associations between legumain and a composite of cardiovascular death, spontaneous myocardial infarction or stroke, and its individual components were assessed by multivariable Cox regression analyses. At baseline, a 50% increase in legumain level was associated with a hazard ratio (HR) of 1.13 (95% CI, 1.04–1.21), P=0.0018, for the primary composite end point, adjusted for randomized treatment. The association remained significant after adjustment for important clinical and demographic variables (HR, 1.10; 95% CI, 1.02–1.19; P=0.013) but not in the fully adjusted model. Legumain levels at 1 month were not associated with the composite end point but were negatively associated with stroke (HR, 0.62; 95% CI, 0.44–0.88; P=0.0069), including in the fully adjusted model (HR, 0.57; 95% CI, 0.37–0.88; P=0.0114). Conclusions Baseline legumain was associated with the primary outcome in patients with acute coronary syndrome, but not in the fully adjusted model. The association between high levels of legumain at 1 month and decreased occurrence of stroke could be of interest from a mechanistic point of view, illustrating the potential dual role of legumain during atherogenesis and acute coronary syndrome. The campaign “No action today, no cure tomorrow” against antimicrobial resistance proposed by the World Health Organization (WHO) has not only propeled people to take action to prevent antimicrobial resistance, but has also encouraged researchers to develop new antimicrobial agents. 4(3H)-quinazolinone and its derivatives belong to a group of compounds with many potential applications; this study was conducted to find new derivatives of heterocyclic 4(3H)-quinazolinone with biological effects, contributing to research on antibacterial and antifungal compounds. Using the closed-loop method between anthranilic acid and acetic anhydride, followed by reaction with aniline derivatives, a substituted product of position 3 of 4(3H)-quinazolinone was obtained, along with bromizing to replace the hydrogen of the methyl group in position 2 with dibromo. Heterocyclic derivatives such as imidazole, triazole, and thiazole were replaced from this dibromo product to obtain 19 derivatives. The structures of these derivatives were checked by modern methods such as IR, 1H-NMR, and MS. The results indicated that all of the structures were as expected, so the process of creating new derivatives from 4(3H)-quinazolinone was achieved in this study. Fourteen of the derivatives, namely 3d, 3e, 3f, 3g, 3h, 3i, 3j, 3k, 3m, 3o, 3p, 3q, 3r, and 3s, had antibacterial or antifungal effects. Among these, there were five potential derivatives: Antifungal activity was observed on A. niger by 3j and 3f (MIC: 32 μg/mL) and 3s (MIC: 64 μg/mL), and on C. albicans by 3f (MIC: 8 μg/mL); antibacterial activity was observed on S. aureus by 3p (MIC: 16 μg/mL) and 3f and 3r (MIC: 32 μg/mL), on MRSA by 3f and 3r (MIC: 32 μg/mL), and on E. coli by 3f (MIC: 32 μg/mL).
