Background: Peripheral nerve stimulation is used in both clinical and fundamental research for therapy and exploration. At present, non-invasive peripheral nerve stimulation still lacks the penetration depth to reach deep nerve targets and the stimulation focality to offer selectivity. It is therefore rarely employed as the primary selected nerve stimulation method. We have previously demonstrated that a new stimulation technique, temporal interference stimulation, can overcome depth and focality issues., Methods: Here, we implement a novel form of temporal interference, bilateral temporal interference stimulation, for bilateral hypoglossal nerve stimulation in rodents and humans. Pairs of electrodes are placed alongside both hypoglossal nerves to stimulate them synchronously and thus decrease the stimulation amplitude required to activate hypoglossal-nerve-controlled tongue movement., Results: Comparing bilateral temporal interference stimulation with unilateral temporal interference stimulation, we show that it can elicit the same behavioral and electrophysiological responses at a reduced stimulation amplitude. Traditional transcutaneous stimulation evokes no response with equivalent amplitudes of stimulation., Conclusions: During first-in-man studies, temporal interference stimulation was found to be well-tolerated, and to clinically reduce apnea-hypopnea events in a subgroup of female patients with obstructive sleep apnea. Electrical stimulation of peripheral nerves is a cornerstone of bioelectronic medicine. Effective ways to accomplish peripheral nerve stimulation (PNS) noninvasively without surgically implanted devices are enabling for fundamental research and clinical translation. Here, it is demonstrated how relatively high-frequency sine-wave carriers (3 kHz) emitted by two pairs of cutaneous electrodes can temporally interfere at deep peripheral nerve targets. The effective stimulation frequency is equal to the offset frequency (0.5 - 4 Hz) between the two carriers. This principle of temporal interference nerve stimulation (TINS) in vivo using the murine sciatic nerve model is validated. Effective actuation is delivered at significantly lower current amplitudes than standard transcutaneous electrical stimulation. Further, how flexible and conformable on-skin multielectrode arrays can facilitate precise alignment of TINS onto a nerve is demonstrated. This method is simple, relying on the repurposing of existing clinically-approved hardware. Introduction: Neurostimulation applied from deep brain stimulation (DBS) electrodes is an effective therapeutic intervention in patients suffering from intractable drug-resistant epilepsy when resective surgery is contraindicated or failed. Inhibitory DBS to suppress seizures and associated epileptogenic biomarkers could be performed with high-frequency stimulation (HFS), typically between 100 and 165 Hz, to various deep-seated targets, such as the Mesio-temporal lobe (MTL), which leads to changes in brain rhythms, specifically in the hippocampus. The most prominent alterations concern high-frequency oscillations (HFOs), namely an increase in ripples, a reduction in pathological Fast Ripples (FRs), and a decrease in pathological interictal epileptiform discharges (IEDs)., Materials and Methods: In the current study, we use Temporal Interference (TI) stimulation to provide a non-invasive DBS (130 Hz) of the MTL, specifically the hippocampus, in both mouse models of epilepsy, and scale the method using human cadavers to demonstrate the potential efficacy in human patients. Simulations for both mice and human heads were performed to calculate the best coordinates to reach the hippocampus., Results: This non-invasive DBS increases physiological ripples, and decreases the number of FRs and IEDs in a mouse model of epilepsy. Similarly, we show the inability of 130 Hz transcranial current stimulation (TCS) to achieve similar results. We therefore further demonstrate the translatability to human subjects via measurements of the TI stimulation vs. TCS in human cadavers. Results show a better penetration of TI fields into the human hippocampus as compared with TCS., Significance: These results constitute the first proof of the feasibility and efficiency of TI to stimulate at depth an area without impacting the surrounding tissue. Using the taxonogenomics method, we describe Gracilibacillus phocaeensis strain Marseille-P3801, a new species previously isolated from a salty stool of a 20-year-old man from N'Diop, Senegal. It is a Gram-positive, aerobic and motile bacillus. The major fatty acids are C 15:0-anteiso (59%), C 16:0 (16%) and C 17:0-anteiso (11%). Strain Marseille-P3801 exhibits a 98.45% sequence similarity with Gracilibacillus thailandensis strain TP2-8, the phylogenetically closest species. Strain SIT17 T was isolated from the stool of a healthy 13-month-old Senegalese boy. It is a Gram-positive, anaerobic, rod-shaped, non-spore-forming and mobile bacterium. It exhibited 92.74% 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity with the Brassicibacter thermophilus strain Cel2f, the phylogenetically most closely related species. Its genome is about 2.87 Mb long with 27.39 mol% G + C content. Massilistercora timonensis gen. nov., sp. nov. strain Marseille-P3756T is a new species of the phylum Firmicutes ; it was isolated from the human gut microbiota and has a genome of 2 769 591 bp (51.2% G + C). The closest species based on 16S rRNA sequence was Merdimonas faecis strain BR31 with 95.2 % sequence similarity. Anaerococcus marasmi sp. nov. strain Marseille-P3557 T is a new species isolated from a stool of a Nigerian child with marasmus. The genome of Marseille-P3557 T was 2 130 060 bp long (35.4% G + C content). The closest species based on 16S ribosomal RNA sequence was Anaerococcus prevotii strain 20548, with 97.6% sequence similarity. Using the taxono-genomics concept, we describe here a strictly anaerobic Gram-positive bacillus. This strain was isolated from the stool sample of a 50-year-old healthy Bedouin woman. The 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis and the whole-genome sequencing showed that this isolate belonged to the genus Gordonibacter in the family Eggerthellaceae . Massilimicrobiota timonensis gen. nov., sp. nov. strain Marseille-P2264 is a new species from Firmicutes phylum isolated from the human gut. Its genome was 2,849,574 bp-long with a 31.8% G+C content. The closest species based on 16S rRNA sequence was Longibaculum muris with 95.6% sequence similarity. Considering phenotypic features, 16S rRNA sequence and comparative genome studies, we proposed Marseille-P2264 as the type strain of Massilimicrobiota timonensis gen. nov., sp. nov.

Bacteroides bouchesdurhonensis sp. nov., strain Marseille-P2653 T (= CSUR; P2653=DSM103120) is a new bacterial species belonging to the Firmicutes phylum in the family Bacteroidaceae that was isolated from the human gut microbiota.

We report here the main characteristics of 'Collinsella provencensis' strain Marseille-P3740 (CSUR P3740), 'Parabacteroides bouchesdurhonensis' strain Marseille-P3763 (CSUR P3763) and 'Sutterella seckii' strain Marseille-P3660 (CSUR P3660), which were isolated using culturomics from the human gut microbiota of healthy individuals living in Marseille.

Strain Marseille-P2645 T was isolated in a colon sample from a Frenchwoman who underwent a colonoscopy. Bacterial cells were Gram negative, non-spore forming, mobile and strictly anaerobic. The genome of strain Marseille-P2645 T is 3 950 441 bp long and contains 3374 protein-coding genes. The DNA G+C content is of 51.66 mol%. Strain Marseille-P2645 T exhibited a 92.9% sequence similarity with Bacteroides helcogenes strain P36-108 T (GenBank accession no. CP002352), the phylogenetically closest species with standing in nomenclature. Strain Marseille-P2645 T (= CSUR P2645 = DSM 103034) is therefore a candidate as a type species of a new genus belonging to the Bacteroidaceae family, for which the name of Mediterranea massiliensis gen. nov., sp. nov., is proposed.

Objective: Describe the epidemiology, diagnosis and treatment of vesicovaginal fistula (VVF)., Patients and Methods: We conducted a retrospective descriptive study of all cases of VVF secondary to hysterectomy. The following parameters were studied: age, parity, indication for hysterectomy, risk factors, the consultation period, the anatomical type of VVF, the paraclinical, the surgical approach and results of the cure., Results: Fourteen cases were identified over 10 years. All hysterectomies were performed by laparotomia. The average age of patients was 54.3±13 years. Hysterectomy was performed in view of a uterine leiomyoma in eight cases, a cancer of the cervix in four cases, a menometrorrhagia in one case and a choriocarcinoma in one case. Four patients had received neoadjuvant radiotherapy. The mean time from injury was 13.5±18 months. Examination under valve was allowed to find 11 VVF type 1 and three type 2 VVF. IVU was normal in seven patients and allowed to find an ureterohydronephrose stage III in one patient. VVF was addressed by high in ten cases including 5 by transperitoneovaginale and 5 by transvesical pure. The postoperative course was uneventful in 11 patients (78%) but marked by vesicocutaneous fistula, parietal suppuration and one failure., Conclusion: In this short series of post-hysterectomy VVF treated by laparotomia, we observed a rate of cure satisfying in spite of an important psychosocial morbidity., (Copyright © 2013 Elsevier Masson SAS.
