Reasoning is an essential component of human intelligence as it plays a fundamental role in our ability to think critically, support responsible decisions, and solve challenging problems. Traditionally, AI has addressed reasoning in the context of logic-based representations of knowledge. However, the recent leap forward in natural language processing, with the emergence of language models based on transformers, is hinting at the possibility that these models exhibit reasoning abilities, particularly as they grow in size and are trained on more data. Despite ongoing discussions about what reasoning is in language models, it is still not easy to pin down to what extent these models are actually capable of reasoning. The goal of this workshop is to create a platform for researchers from different disciplines and/or AI perspectives, to explore approaches and techniques with the aim to reconcile reasoning between language models using transformers and using logic-based representations. The specific objectives include analyzing the reasoning abilities of language models measured alongside KR methods, injecting KR-style reasoning abilities into language models (including by neuro-symbolic means), and formalizing the kind of reasoning language models carry out. Computing is still under a significant threat from ransomware, which necessitates prompt action to prevent it. Ransomware attacks can have a negative impact on how smart grids, particularly digital substations. In addition to examining a ransomware detection method using artificial intelligence (AI), this paper offers a ransomware attack modeling technique that targets the disrupted operation of a digital substation. The first, binary data is transformed into image data and fed into the convolution neural network model using federated learning. The experimental findings demonstrate that the suggested technique detects ransomware with a high accuracy rate.

In this paper, we explore the application of Generative Pre-trained Transformers (GPTs) in cross-lingual legal Question-Answering (QA) systems using the COLIEE Task 4 dataset. In the COLIEE Task 4, given a statement and a set of related legal articles that serve as context, the objective is to determine whether the statement is legally valid, i.e., if it can be inferred from the provided contextual articles or not, which is also known as an entailment task. Large language models with billions of parameters, such as GPT-3.5, GPT-4, and LLaMA, are increasingly prevalent. Numerous studies have explored effective prompting techniques to harness the power of these LLMs for various research problems. Retrieval, specifically in the legal data domain, poses a challenging task for the direct application of Prompting techniques due to the large number and substantial length of legal articles. This research focuses on maximizing the potential of prompting by placing it as the final phase of the retrieval system, preceded by the support of two phases: BM25 Pre-ranking and BERT-based Re-ranking. Experiments on the COLIEE 2023 dataset demonstrate that integrating prompting techniques on LLMs into the retrieval system significantly improves retrieval accuracy. In this new era of rapid AI development, especially in language processing, the demand for AI in the legal domain is increasingly critical. In the context where research in other languages such as English, Japanese, and Chinese has been well-established, we introduce the first fundamental research for the Vietnamese language in the legal domain: legal textual entailment recognition through the Vietnamese Language and Speech Processing workshop. In analyzing participants' results, we discuss certain linguistic aspects critical in the legal domain that pose challenges that need to be addressed.

Finetuning approaches in NLP often focus on exploitation rather than exploration, which may lead to suboptimal models. Given the vast search space of natural language, this limited exploration can restrict their performance in complex, high-stakes domains, where accurate negation understanding and logical reasoning abilities are crucial. To address this issue, we leverage Reinforcement Learning from Logical Feedback (RLLF) to create an effective balance between exploration and exploitation in LLMs. Our approach employs an appropriate benchmark dataset for training and evaluation, highlighting the importance of exploration in enhancing negation understanding capabilities. We compare the performance of our RLLF-enhanced LLMs with baseline models trained without RLLF, demonstrating the value of this balanced approach. Furthermore, we showcase the potential of our method in legal AI applications by employing transfer learning and evaluating its impact on negation understanding. Our experimental results exhibit the effectiveness of balancing exploration and exploitation with RLLF in improving LLMs' negation capabilities. This paper presents a deep learning-based system for efficient automatic case summarization. Leveraging state-of-the-art natural language processing techniques, the system offers both supervised and unsupervised methods to generate concise and relevant summaries of lengthy legal case documents. The user-friendly interface allows users to browse the system's database of legal case documents, select their desired case, and choose their preferred summarization method. The system generates comprehensive summaries for each subsection of the legal text as well as an overall summary. This demo streamlines legal case document analysis, potentially benefiting legal professionals by reducing workload and increasing efficiency. Future work will focus on refining summarization techniques and exploring the application of our methods to other types of legal texts.

Language serves as a vehicle for conveying thought, enabling communication among individuals. The ability to distinguish between diverse concepts, identify fairness and injustice, and comprehend a range of legal notions fundamentally relies on logical reasoning. Large Language Models (LLMs) attempt to emulate human language understanding and generation, but their competency in logical reasoning remains limited. This paper seeks to address the philosophical question: How can we effectively teach logical reasoning to LLMs while maintaining a deep understanding of the intricate relationship between language and logic? By focusing on bolstering LLMs' capabilities in logical reasoning, we aim to expand their applicability in law and other logic-intensive disciplines. To this end, we propose a Reinforcement Learning from Logical Feedback (RLLF) approach, which serves as a potential framework for refining LLMs' reasoning capacities. In this study, we present a novel and challenging multilabel Vietnamese dataset (RMDM) designed to assess the performance of large language models (LLMs), in verifying electronic information related to legal contexts, focusing on fake news as potential input for electronic evidence. The RMDM dataset comprises four labels: real, mis, dis, and mal, representing real information, misinformation, disinformation, and mal-information, respectively. By including these diverse labels, RMDM captures the complexities of differing fake news categories and offers insights into the abilities of different language models to handle various types of information that could be part of electronic evidence. The dataset consists of a total of 1,556 samples, with 389 samples for each label. Preliminary tests on the dataset using GPT-based and BERT-based models reveal variations in the models' performance across different labels, indicating that the dataset effectively challenges the ability of various language models to verify the authenticity of such information. Our findings suggest that verifying electronic information related to legal contexts, including fake news, remains a difficult problem for language models, warranting further attention from the research community to advance toward more reliable AI models for potential legal applications., Comment: ISAILD@KSE 2023

This paper presents a knowledge graph construction method for legal case documents and related laws, aiming to organize legal information efficiently and enhance various downstream tasks. Our approach consists of three main steps: data crawling, information extraction, and knowledge graph deployment. First, the data crawler collects a large corpus of legal case documents and related laws from various sources, providing a rich database for further processing. Next, the information extraction step employs natural language processing techniques to extract entities such as courts, cases, domains, and laws, as well as their relationships from the unstructured text. Finally, the knowledge graph is deployed, connecting these entities based on their extracted relationships, creating a heterogeneous graph that effectively represents legal information and caters to users such as lawyers, judges, and scholars. The established baseline model leverages unsupervised learning methods, and by incorporating the knowledge graph, it demonstrates the ability to identify relevant laws for a given legal case. This paper describes the NOWJ1 Team's approach for the Automated Legal Question Answering Competition (ALQAC) 2023, which focuses on enhancing legal task performance by integrating classical statistical models and Pre-trained Language Models (PLMs). For the document retrieval task, we implement a pre-processing step to overcome input limitations and apply learning-to-rank methods to consolidate features from various models. The question-answering task is split into two sub-tasks: sentence classification and answer extraction. We incorporate state-of-the-art models to develop distinct systems for each sub-task, utilizing both classic statistical models and pre-trained Language Models. The evolution of Generative Pre-trained Transformer (GPT) models has led to significant advancements in various natural language processing applications, particularly in legal textual entailment. We present an analysis of GPT-3.5 (ChatGPT) and GPT-4 performances on COLIEE Task 4 dataset, a prominent benchmark in this domain. The study encompasses data from Heisei 18 (2006) to Reiwa 3 (2021), exploring the models' abilities to discern entailment relationships within Japanese statute law across different periods. Our preliminary experimental results unveil intriguing insights into the models' strengths and weaknesses in handling legal textual entailment tasks, as well as the patterns observed in model performance. In the context of proprietary models with undisclosed architectures and weights, black-box analysis becomes crucial for evaluating their capabilities. We discuss the influence of training data distribution and the implications on the models' generalizability. In recent years, natural language processing has gained significant popularity in various sectors, including the legal domain. This paper presents NeCo Team's solutions to the Vietnamese text processing tasks provided in the Automated Legal Question Answering Competition 2023 (ALQAC 2023), focusing on legal domain knowledge acquisition for low-resource languages through data enrichment. Our methods for the legal document retrieval task employ a combination of similarity ranking and deep learning models, while for the second task, which requires extracting an answer from a relevant legal article in response to a question, we propose a range of adaptive techniques to handle different question types. Negation is a fundamental aspect of natural language, playing a critical role in communication and comprehension. Our study assesses the negation detection performance of Generative Pre-trained Transformer (GPT) models, specifically GPT-2, GPT-3, GPT-3.5, and GPT-4. We focus on the identification of negation in natural language using a zero-shot prediction approach applied to our custom xNot360 dataset. Our approach examines sentence pairs labeled to indicate whether the second sentence negates the first. Our findings expose a considerable performance disparity among the GPT models, with GPT-4 surpassing its counterparts and GPT-3.5 displaying a marked performance reduction. The overall proficiency of the GPT models in negation detection remains relatively modest, indicating that this task pushes the boundaries of their natural language understanding capabilities. We not only highlight the constraints of GPT models in handling negation but also emphasize the importance of logical reliability in high-stakes domains such as healthcare, science, and law.

Logic programming has long being advocated for legal reasoning, and several approaches have been put forward relying upon explicit representation of the law in logic programming terms. In this position paper we focus on the PROLEG logic-programming-based framework for formalizing and reasoning with Japanese presupposed ultimate fact theory. Specifically, we examine challenges and opportunities in leveraging deep learning techniques for improving legal reasoning using PROLEG identifying four distinct options ranging from enhancing fact extraction using deep learning to end-to-end solutions for reasoning with textual legal descriptions. We assess advantages and limitations of each option, considering their technical feasibility, interpretability, and alignment with the needs of legal practitioners and decision-makers. This paper presents the NOWJ team's approach to the COLIEE 2023 Competition, which focuses on advancing legal information processing techniques and applying them to real-world legal scenarios. Our team tackles the four tasks in the competition, which involve legal case retrieval, legal case entailment, statute law retrieval, and legal textual entailment. We employ state-of-the-art machine learning models and innovative approaches, such as BERT, Longformer, BM25-ranking algorithm, and multi-task learning models. Question answering (QA) in law is a challenging problem because legal documents are much more complicated than normal texts in terms of terminology, structure, and temporal and logical relationships. It is even more difficult to perform legal QA for low-resource languages like Vietnamese where labeled data are rare and pre-trained language models are still limited. In this paper, we try to overcome these limitations by implementing a Vietnamese article-level retrieval-based legal QA system and introduce a novel method to improve the performance of language models by improving data quality through weak labeling. Our hypothesis is that in contexts where labeled data are limited, efficient data enrichment can help increase overall performance. We examine how well the state-of-the-art (SOTA) models used in legal reasoning support abductive reasoning tasks. Abductive reasoning is a form of logical inference in which a hypothesis is formulated from a set of observations, and that hypothesis is used to explain the observations. The ability to formulate such hypotheses is important for lawyers and legal scholars as it helps them articulate logical arguments, interpret laws, and develop legal theories. Our motivation is to consider the belief that deep learning models, especially large language models (LLMs), will soon replace lawyers because they perform well on tasks related to legal text processing. But to do so, we believe, requires some form of abductive hypothesis formation. In other words, while LLMs become more popular and powerful, we want to investigate their capacity for abductive reasoning. To pursue this goal, we start by building a logic-augmented dataset for abductive reasoning with 498,697 samples and then use it to evaluate the performance of a SOTA model in the legal field. Multi-document summarization is challenging because the summaries should not only describe the most important information from all documents but also provide a coherent interpretation of the documents. This paper proposes a method for multi-document summarization based on cluster similarity. In the extractive method we use hybrid model based on a modified version of the PageRank algorithm and a text correlation considerations mechanism. After generating summaries by selecting the most important sentences from each cluster, we apply BARTpho and ViT5 to construct the abstractive models. Both extractive and abstractive approaches were considered in this study. LawGPT 1.0 is a virtual legal assistant built on the state-of-the-art language model GPT-3, fine-tuned for the legal domain. The system is designed to provide legal assistance to users in a conversational manner, helping them with tasks such as answering legal questions, generating legal documents, and providing legal advice. In this paper, we provide a brief overview of LawGPT 1.0, its architecture, and its performance on a set of legal benchmark tasks. Please note that the detailed information about the model is protected by a non-disclosure agreement (NDA) and cannot be disclosed in this report.

Knowledge representation and reasoning in law are essential to facilitate the automation of legal analysis and decision-making tasks. In this paper, we propose a new approach based on legal science, specifically legal taxonomy, for representing and reasoning with legal documents. Our approach interprets the regulations in legal documents as binary trees, which facilitates legal reasoning systems to make decisions and resolve logical contradictions. The advantages of this approach are twofold. First, legal reasoning can be performed on the basis of the binary tree representation of the regulations. Second, the binary tree representation of the regulations is more understandable than the existing sentence-based representations. Legal text retrieval serves as a key component in a wide range of legal text processing tasks such as legal question answering, legal case entailment, and statute law retrieval. The performance of legal text retrieval depends, to a large extent, on the representation of text, both query and legal documents. Based on good representations, a legal text retrieval model can effectively match the query to its relevant documents. Because legal documents often contain long articles and only some parts are relevant to queries, it is quite a challenge for existing models to represent such documents. In this paper, we study the use of attentive neural network-based text representation for statute law document retrieval. We propose a general approach using deep neural networks with attention mechanisms. Based on it, we develop two hierarchical architectures with sparse attention to represent long sentences and articles, and we name them Attentive CNN and Paraformer. The methods are evaluated on datasets of different sizes and characteristics in English, Japanese, and Vietnamese. Experimental results show that: i) Attentive neural methods substantially outperform non-neural methods in terms of retrieval performance across datasets and languages; ii) Pretrained transformer-based models achieve better accuracy on small datasets at the cost of high computational complexity while lighter weight Attentive CNN achieves better accuracy on large datasets; and iii) Our proposed Paraformer outperforms state-of-the-art methods on COLIEE dataset, achieving the highest recall and F2 scores in the top-N retrieval task., Comment: Preprint version. The trade-off of secrecy is the difficulty of verification. This trade-off means that contracts must be kept private, yet their compliance needs to be verified, which we call the secrecy-verifiability paradox. However, the existing smart contracts are not designed to provide secrecy in this context without sacrificing verifiability. Without a trusted third party for notarization, the protocol for the verification of smart contracts has to be built on cryptographic primitives. We propose a blockchain-based solution that overcomes this challenge by storing the verifiable evidence as accessible data on a blockchain in an appropriate manner. This solution allows for cryptographic data verification but not revealing the data itself. This study deals with the problem of information retrieval (IR) for Vietnamese legal texts. Despite being well researched in many languages, information retrieval has still not received much attention from the Vietnamese research community. This is especially true for the case of legal documents, which are hard to process. This study proposes a new approach for information retrieval for Vietnamese legal documents using sentence-transformer. Besides, various experiments are conducted to make comparisons between different transformer models, ranking scores, syllable-level, and word-level training. In recent years, thanks to breakthroughs in neural network techniques especially attentive deep learning models, natural language processing has made many impressive achievements. However, automated legal word processing is still a difficult branch of natural language processing. Legal sentences are often long and contain complicated legal terminologies. Hence, models that work well on general documents still face challenges in dealing with legal documents. We have verified the existence of this problem with our experiments in this work. In this dissertation, we selectively present the main achievements in improving attentive neural networks in automatic legal document processing. In this paper, we introduce our approaches using Transformer-based models for different problems of the COLIEE 2021 automatic legal text processing competition. Automated processing of legal documents is a challenging task because of the characteristics of legal documents as well as the limitation of the amount of data. With our detailed experiments, we found that Transformer-based pretrained language models can perform well with automated legal text processing problems with appropriate approaches. We describe in detail the processing steps for each task such as problem formulation, data processing and augmentation, pretraining, finetuning. In addition, we introduce to the community two pretrained models that take advantage of parallel translations in legal domain, NFSP and NMSP. In which, NFSP achieves the state-of-the-art result in Task 5 of the competition. Spelling error correction is one of topics which have a long history in natural language processing. Although previous studies have achieved remarkable results, challenges still exist. In the Vietnamese language, a state-of-the-art method for the task infers a syllable's context from its adjacent syllables. The method's accuracy can be unsatisfactory, however, because the model may lose the context if two (or more) spelling mistakes stand near each other. In this paper, we propose a novel method to correct Vietnamese spelling errors. We tackle the problems of mistyped errors and misspelled errors by using a deep learning model. The embedding layer, in particular, is powered by the byte pair encoding technique. The sequence to sequence model based on the Transformer architecture makes our approach different from the previous works on the same problem. In the experiment, we train the model with a large synthetic dataset, which is randomly introduced spelling errors. We test the performance of the proposed method using a realistic dataset. This dataset contains 11,202 human-made misspellings in 9,341 different Vietnamese sentences. The experimental results show that our method achieves encouraging performance with 86.8% errors detected and 81.5% errors corrected, which improves the state-of-the-art approach 5.6% and 2.2%, respectively.

Attention is all we need as long as we have enough data. Even so, it is sometimes not easy to determine how much data is enough while the models are becoming larger and larger. In this paper, we propose HYDRA heads, lightweight pretrained linguistic self-attention heads to inject knowledge into transformer models without pretraining them again. Our approach is a balanced paradigm between leaving the models to learn unsupervised and forcing them to conform to linguistic knowledge rigidly as suggested in previous studies. Our experiment proves that the approach is not only the boost performance of the model but also lightweight and architecture friendly. We empirically verify our framework on benchmark datasets to show the contribution of linguistic knowledge to a transformer model. This is a promising result for a new approach to transferring knowledge from linguistic resources into transformer-based models.

COLIEE is an annual competition in automatic computerized legal text processing. Automatic legal document processing is an ambitious goal, and the structure and semantics of the law are often far more complex than everyday language. Ambiguity is a characteristic of natural language, which makes expression ideas flexible. However, in a domain that requires accurate statements, it becomes a barrier. Specifically, a single word can have many meanings and multiple words can have the same meaning. When translating a text into a foreign language, the translator needs to determine the exact meaning of each element in the original sentence to produce the correct translation sentence. From that observation, in this paper, we propose ParaLaw Nets, a pretrained model family using sentence-level cross-lingual information to reduce ambiguity and increase the performance in legal text processing. Legal English is a sublanguage that is important for everyone but not for everyone to understand. Pretrained models have become best practices among current deep learning approaches for different problems. It would be a waste or even a danger if these models were applied in practice without knowledge of the sublanguage of the law. In this paper, we raise the issue and propose a trivial solution by introducing BERTLaw a legal sublanguage pretrained model. The paper's experiments demonstrate the superior effectiveness of the method compared to the baseline pretrained model

Deep learning is a powerful approach with good performance on many different tasks. However, these models often require massive computational resources. It is a worrying trend that we increasingly need models that work well on more complex problems. In this paper, we propose and verify the effectiveness and efficiency of SCNN, an innovative neural network inspired by the swarm concept. In addition to introducing the relevant theories, our detailed experiments suggest that fewer parameters may perform better than models with more parameters. Besides, our experiments show that SCNN needs less data than traditional models. That could be an essential hint for problems where there is not much data.

We propose deep learning based methods for automatic systems of legal retrieval and legal question-answering in COLIEE 2020. These systems are all characterized by being pre-trained on large amounts of data before being finetuned for the specified tasks. This approach helps to overcome the data scarcity and achieve good performance, thus can be useful for tackling related problems in information retrieval, and decision support in the legal domain.
