From biological organs to soft robotics, highly deformable materials are essential components of natural and engineered systems. These highly deformable materials can have heterogeneous material properties, and can experience heterogeneous deformations with or without underlying material heterogeneity. Many recent works have established that computational modeling approaches are well suited for understanding and predicting the consequences of material heterogeneity and for interpreting observed heterogeneous strain fields. In particular, there has been significant work toward developing inverse analysis approaches that can convert observed kinematic quantities (e.g., displacement, strain) to material properties and mechanical state. Despite the success of these approaches, they are not necessarily generalizable and often rely on tight control and knowledge of boundary conditions. Here, we will build on the recent advances (and ubiquity) of machine learning approaches to explore alternative approaches to detect patterns in heterogeneous material properties and mechanical behavior. Specifically, we will explore unsupervised learning approaches to clustering and ensemble clustering to identify heterogeneous regions. Overall, we find that these approaches are effective, yet limited in their abilities. Through this initial exploration (where all data and code are published alongside this manuscript), we set the stage for future studies that more specifically adapt these methods to mechanical data. Exploring new techniques to improve the prediction of tropical cyclone (TC) formation is essential for operational practice. Using convolutional neural networks, this study shows that deep learning can provide a promising capability for predicting TC formation from a given set of large-scale environments at certain forecast lead times. Specifically, two common deep-learning architectures including the residual net (ResNet) and UNet are used to examine TC formation in the Pacific Ocean. With a set of large-scale environments extracted from the NCEP–NCAR reanalysis during 2008–21 as input and the TC labels obtained from the best track data, we show that both ResNet and UNet reach their maximum forecast skill at the 12–18-h forecast lead time. Moreover, both architectures perform best when using a large domain covering most of the Pacific Ocean for input data, as compared to a smaller subdomain in the western Pacific. Given its ability to provide additional information about TC formation location, UNet performs generally worse than ResNet across the accuracy metrics. The deep learning approach in this study presents an alternative way to predict TC formation beyond the traditional vortex-tracking methods in the current numerical weather prediction. Significance Statement: This study presents a new approach for predicting tropical cyclone (TC) formation based on deep learning (DL). Using two common DL architectures in visualization research and a set of large-scale environments in the Pacific Ocean extracted from the reanalysis data, we show that DL has an optimal capability of predicting TC formation at the 12–18-h lead time. Examining the DL performance for different domain sizes shows that the use of a large domain size for input data can help capture some far-field information needed for predicting TCG. Recently, federated learning (FL) has been receiving great attention as an effective machine learning method to avoid the security issue in raw data collection, as well as to distribute the computing load to edge devices. However, even though wireless communication is an essential component for implementing FL in edge networks, there have been few works that analyze the effect of wireless networks on FL. In this paper, we investigate FL in small-cell networks where multiple base stations (BSs) and users are located according to a homogeneous Poisson point process (PPP) with different densities. We comprehensively analyze the effects of geographic node deployment on the model aggregation in FL on the basis of stochastic geometry-based analysis. We derive the closed-form expressions of coverage probability with tractable approximations and discuss the minimum required BS density for achieving a target model aggregation rate in small-cell networks. Our analysis and simulation results provide insightful information for understanding the behaviors of FL in small-cell networks; these can be exploited as a guideline for designing the network facilitating wireless FL. We study the effects of weak two-photon absorption on two-dimensional (2D) solitons interaction in a silicon-based waveguide under a framework of coupled perturbed (2 + 1) D nonlinear Schrödinger equations with a pure Kerr nonlinearity and a nonstationary potential. We extend the perturbative analysis for collisions of two one-dimensional solitons in silicon waveguides to derive the theoretical expressions for the amplitude evolution of a single perturbed soliton and for the abrupt amplitude downshift of a colliding soliton due to a fast interaction between two 2D solitons in silicon lattices. The theoretical calculations are then validated by the extensive simulations of the coupled perturbed (2 + 1) D nonlinear Schrödinger model with periodic and non-periodic potentials. The simulations are implemented by using the accelerated imaginary-time evolution scheme and the split-step Fourier method. Purpose: The purpose of this paper is to explore the status of university accelerators (UAs) in Australia, expanding a similar paper on related entrepreneurship education (EE) in 2019. The aim is to review neoteric global best practice UA, aligning context and specific inference to the impact of UAs in Australia. Design/methodology/approach: The authors introduce an iterative and emergent inquiry into multi-method research, including a quantitative examination of Australian UAs, Leximancer algorithmic analyses of entrepreneurial strategic intent and narratives from best practice applications. Findings: The paper highlights the sparse and inconsistent distribution across UAs in Australia, further characterized by significant symbolic motives of operation. Furthermore, the integration of EE evidenced on global UA is not as evident in Australia, highlighting outcomes more specific to the success of nascent (student) startups as opposed to educational outcomes. Research limitations/implications: Limitations include the availability and accuracy of online documents and data, although implications have been mitigated using multi-method research design. Practical implications: Despite the provision of critical grounding for practitioners and researchers in developing UAs, further research is recommended regarding the efficacy and impact of these accelerators. Originality/value: This study is the first multi-methods emergent inquiry into UAs in Australia, coupled with integration of EE. Severe tetanus is characterized by muscle spasm and cardiovascular system disturbance. The pathophysiology of muscle spasm is relatively well understood and involves inhibition of central inhibitory synapses by tetanus toxin. That of cardiovascular disturbance is less clear, but is believed to relate to disinhibition of the autonomic nervous system. The clinical syndrome of autonomic nervous system dysfunction (ANSD) seen in severe tetanus is characterized principally by changes in heart rate and blood pressure which have been linked to increased circulating catecholamines. Previous studies have described varying relationships between catecholamines and signs of ANSD in tetanus, but are limited by confounders and assays used. In this study, we aimed to perform detailed characterization of the relationship between catecholamines (adrenaline and noradrenaline), cardiovascular parameters (heart rate and blood pressure) and clinical outcomes (ANSD, mechanical ventilation required, and length of intensive care unit stay) in adults with tetanus, as well as examine whether intrathecal antitoxin administration affected subsequent catecholamine excretion. Noradrenaline and adrenaline were measured by ELISA from 24-h urine collections taken on day 5 of hospitalization in 272 patients enrolled in a 2 × 2 factorial-blinded randomized controlled trial in a Vietnamese hospital. Catecholamine results measured from 263 patients were available for analysis. After adjustment for potential confounders (i.e., age, sex, intervention treatment, and medications), there were indications of non-linear relationships between urinary catecholamines and heart rate. Background: Diabetic macular ischaemia (DMI) is a complication of diabetic retinopathy that leads to irreversible vision loss. DMI is characterised by reduced retinal vessel density and enlargement of the foveal avascular zone (FAZ). Despite its clinical burden, there is no formal consensus on the definition of DMI, and no approved treatment. Semaphorin 3A (Sema3A) is an axonal guidance molecule that blocks revascularisation of the ischaemic retina. Sema3A modulation is therefore a promising mechanism of action for the treatment of ischaemic eye diseases. BI 764524 is an intravitreal anti-Sema3A ischaemia modulator agent.Methods: HORNBILL (NCT04424290) is a phase I/IIa trial comprising a non-randomised, open-label, single rising dose (SRD) part and a randomised, masked, sham-controlled multiple dose (MD) part to investigate the safety, tolerability and early biological response of ischaemia modulator BI 764524 in adults (≥18 years) with DMI. DMI will be defined using optical coherence tomography angiography (OCTA) as either any degree of disruption in the retinal vascularity (SRD) or a FAZ of ≥0.5 mm2 (MD). Subjects in the SRD part will receive 0.5, 1.0 or 2.5 mg of BI 764524; the maximum tolerated dose will then be used in the MD part. A minimum of 12 subjects will be enrolled into the SRD part; planned enrollment is 30 for the MD part. The primary endpoint of the SRD part is the number of subjects with dose-limiting adverse events (AEs) until day 8. The primary endpoint of the MD part is the number of subjects with drug-related AEs from baseline to end of study, and secondary endpoints include change from baseline in the size of the FAZ, best-corrected visual acuity and central retinal thickness.Discussion: DMI is a poorly defined condition with no treatment options. HORNBILL is the first clinical trial to assess a treatment for DMI and to use OCTA as a means to define and examine DMI. The OCTA data generated in this trial could form the basis of formal diagnostic criteria for DMI. Despite the rapid development of sequencing technology, single-nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) arrays are still the most cost-effective genotyping solutions for large-scale genomic research and applications. Recent years have witnessed the rapid development of numerous genotyping platforms of different sizes and designs, but population-specific platforms are still lacking, especially for those in developing countries. SNP arrays designed for these countries should be cost-effective (small size), yet incorporate key information needed to associate genotypes with traits. A key design principle for most current platforms is to improve genome-wide imputation so that more SNPs not included in the array (imputed SNPs) can be predicted. However, current tag SNP selection methods mostly focus on imputation accuracy and coverage, but not the functional content of the array. It is those functional SNPs that are most likely associated with traits. Here, we propose LmTag, a novel method for tag SNP selection that not only improves imputation performance but also prioritizes highly functional SNP markers. We apply LmTag on a wide range of populations using both public and in-house whole-genome sequencing databases. Our results show that LmTag improved both functional marker prioritization and genome-wide imputation accuracy compared to existing methods. This novel approach could contribute to the next generation genotyping arrays that provide excellent imputation capability as well as facilitate array-based functional genetic studies. We study the effects of the generic weak nonlinear loss on fast two-pulse interactions in linear waveguides. The colliding pulses are described by a system of coupled Schrödinger equations with a purely nonlinear coupling in the presence of the weak (2m + 1)-order of nonlinear loss, for any m ≥ 1. We derive the analytic expression for the collision-induced amplitude shift in a fast two-pulse interaction. The analytic calculations are based on a generalization of the perturbation technique for calculating the effects of weak perturbations on fast collisions between solitons of the nonlinear Schrödinger equation. African swine fever virus (ASF) has circulated in Vietnam since 2018, causing significant losses to the pig industry. Quick, accurate diagnosis of African swine fever virus (ASFV) infection is crucial for controlling the disease. The detection of the virus in piglets with congenital tremors is described in this paper. ASFV was detected in brain tissues by polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and immunohistochemistry. Classical swine fever virus, porcine parvovirus, porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome virus, and pseudorabies virus were not detected by PCR, suggesting that the ASFV was the cause of these neurological signs. We derive the expressions for the collision-induced amplitude dynamics of two flat-top solitons in spatial dimensions of 1, 2, and 3 caused by the generic weak nonlinear loss under the framework of coupled cubic-quintic (n + 1)D nonlinear Schrödinger equations for n = 1 , 2 , 3. We develop a new perturbative technique which is mainly based on the calculations for the fast collision-induced changes in the soliton envelope and the use of the single perturbed soliton solution for the calculations. These results quantify the energy dropdown due to a fast collision of two pulses (n = 1) , or two optical beams (n = 2), or two light bullets (n = 3) in cubic-quintic nonlinear media with dissipation. Purpose: Diagnosis and management of non‐infectious uveitis (NIU), a major cause of blindness worldwide, are challenging. Corticosteroids, the cornerstone of therapy, are not appropriate for long‐term use, and while non‐biologic and biologic immunomodulators may be used for some patients, data on their efficacy and safety in this population are limited. Repository corticotropin injection (RCI), believed to affect uveitis by multiple mechanisms, has received regulatory approval for treatment of ophthalmic diseases including posterior uveitis, but is not widely used or discussed in guidelines for the management of uveitis and ocular inflammatory diseases. Methods: The index study employed a modified Delphi process with a panel of 14 US‐based ophthalmologists. Consensus recommendations were developed through a series of three questionnaires. Panellists rated statements on a Likert scale from –5 (strongly disagree) to +5 (strongly agree). Results: The Delphi panel provided consensus recommendations on examinations and testing needed for diagnosis, treatment goals, and the use of corticosteroids, as well as the use of non‐biologic and biologic immunomodulators. The panel reached consensus that RCI may be considered for posterior and pan‐uveitis, and dosing should be individualized for each patient. Dose reduction/discontinuation should be considered for excessive RCI‐related toxicity, hyperglycaemia and/or diabetic complications, excessive costs, or remission ≥ 2 years. Patients should be weaned from RCI if uveitis is stable and well controlled. Adverse events during RCI therapy can be managed by appropriate interventions, with dose reduction/discontinuation considered if events are severe or recurrent. We have characterized a recently rediscovered chemosensory structure at the rear of the mandibular mucosa in the mouse oral cavity originally reported in the 1980s. This consists of unorganized taste buds, not contained within troughs, associated with the ducts of an underlying minor salivary gland. Using whole-mount preparations of transgenic mice expressing green fluorescent protein under the promoter of taste-signaling-specific genes, we determined that the structure contains taste bud clusters and salivary gland orifices at the rear of each mandible, distal to the last molar and anterior to the ascending ramus. Immunohistochemical analysis shows in the retromolar taste buds expression of the taste receptors Tas2R131 and T1R3 and taste cascade molecules TrpM5, PLCβ2, and GNAT3, consistent with type II taste cells, and expression of GAD1, consistent with type III taste cells. Furthermore, the neuronal marker, calcitonin gene-related peptide, in retromolar mucosa tissue wrapping around TrpM5+ taste buds was observed. RT–PCR showed that retromolar taste buds express all 3 mouse tas1r genes, 28 of the 35 tas2r genes, and taste transduction signaling genes gnat3, plcb2 , and trpm5 , making the retromolar taste buds similar to other lingual and palate taste buds. Finally, histochemistry demonstrated that the mandibular retromolar secretory gland is a minor salivary gland of mucous type. Background: The current article is a short review of an Alimera Sciences-sponsored symposium held during The 15th International Ocular Inflammation Society Congress in Taiwan on the 14th November 2019 entitled, 'Preventing relapse of non-infectious uveitis effecting the posterior segment of the eye – evaluating the 0.2 μg/day fluocinolone acetonide intravitreal implant.' Main text: The fluocinolone acetonide intravitreal implant was approved in Europe for the prevention of relapse in recurrent non-infectious uveitis affecting the posterior segment of the eye and offers a systemic therapy-sparing treatment option by providing low daily dose of corticosteroid into the vitreous for up to 3 years. In the symposium, the presenters reported clinical outcomes from patients with non-infectious uveitis effecting the posterior segment of the eye to support the effectiveness and safety of the implant for up to 3 years in both randomised controlled trials and real-world practices. Conclusions: Data showed that over a 36 month period, treatment with the fluocinolone acetonide intravitreal implant was associated with significantly fewer episodes of uveitic recurrence, a significantly longer time to uveitic recurrence, greater improvement in visual acuity, a lower need for adjunctive therapy, and an acceptable safety profile. Although the attainment gap between black and minority ethnic (BME) students and white students has persisted for decades, the potential causes of these disparities are highly debated. The emergence of learning analytics allows researchers to understand how students engage in learning activities based on their digital traces in a naturalistic setting. This study investigates the attainment gap by analysing the differences in behavioural engagement between different ethnic groups. Using multilevel models of academic performance, demographics, and online traces of 149,672 students enrolled in 401 modules in a distance learning setting, we confirmed the existing attainment gap. After controlling for other demographics, module characteristics and engagement, BME students were between 19% and 79% less likely to complete, pass or achieve an excellent grade compared to white students. Given the same academic performance, BME students spent 4-12% more time on studying than white students. While the attainment gap remained persistent after controlling for academic engagement, our study further highlighted the inequality of attainment between BME and white students. We analyze a Crank–Nicolson finite difference discretization for the perturbed (2+1)D nonlinear Schrödinger equation with saturable nonlinearity and a perturbation of cubic loss. We show the boundedness, the existence and uniqueness of a numerical solution. We establish the error bound to prove the convergence of the numerical solution. Moreover, we find that the convergence rate is at the second order in both time step and spatial mesh size only under a mild and simple assumption. The numerical scheme is validated by the extensive simulations of the (2+1)D saturable nonlinear Schrödinger equation with cubic loss. The simulations for traveling 2D solitons are implemented by using an accelerated imaginary-time evolution scheme and the Crank–Nicolson finite difference method. • The (2+1)D NLS saturable equations can stabilize 2D solitons. • The rigorous analysis for the perturbed (2+1)D saturable NLS equation is demonstrated for the first time. • By appropriate settings, the existence and the uniqueness of a solution are proved. • An error analysis is established and validated by the simulations for traveling 2D solitons. Improving or maintaining visual acuity is the main goal for the treatment of neovascular age-related macular degeneration (nAMD). Current nAMD standard of care dictates frequent intravitreal (IVT) anti–vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) injections, which places a substantial burden on patients, caregivers, and physicians. Brolucizumab, a newly developed anti-VEGF molecule for nAMD treatment, has demonstrated longer durability and improvement in visual and anatomic outcomes in clinical studies in a q12-week regimen, indicating its potential to reduce treatment burden as an important therapeutic tool in nAMD management. This review focuses on the development of brolucizumab and the preclinical and clinical studies evaluating its efficacy, tolerability, and safety. Brolucizumab (also known as "RTH258" and "ESBA1008") is a humanized, single-chain variable fragment (scFv) antibody with a molecular mass of approximately 26 kDa that inhibits VEGF-A. Preclinical studies show that brolucizumab readily penetrates the retina to reach the retinal pigment epithelium (RPE)/choroid with minimal subsequent systemic exposure. The safety, tolerability, and efficacy of a single IVT brolucizumab administration in patients with treatment-naïve nAMD were first demonstrated in the SEE Phase 1/2 study. The OSPREY Phase 2 study showed brolucizumab to be as efficacious as aflibercept in a q8-week regimen with regard to best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA) and brolucizumab achieving greater fluid resolution. Brolucizumab-treated patients in the OSPREY study were subsequently challenged with a q12-week dosing interval, and the outcomes provided key information for the study design and end points of the Phase 3 studies. In the HAWK and HARRIER Phase 3 studies, after 3 monthly loading injections, brolucizumab treatment regimen (q12-week or q8-week) was guided by individual disease activity assessment using functional and anatomic parameters (central subfield thickness [CST], intraretinal fluid [IRF], or subretinal fluid [SRF]) versus aflibercept (q8-week). Fewer brolucizumab 6-mg treated eyes had disease activity versus aflibercept, and anatomic outcome results at weeks 16 and 48 demonstrate brolucizumab as a potent drying agent. Moreover, of patients treated with 6 mg brolucizumab, 55.6% and 51.0% maintained a q12-week dosing interval immediately after the loading phase until week 48 in HAWK and HARRIER, respectively. These Phase 3 studies demonstrated that the brolucizumab q12-week regimen maintains efficacy and safety while reducing treatment burden associated with regular IVT injections for patients with nAMD. Low-frequency high-voltage ac transmission scheme has recently been proposed as an alternative approach for bulk power transmission. This paper proposes a multi-period optimal power flow (OPF) for a multi-frequency HVac transmission system that interconnects both conventional 50/60-Hz and low-frequency grids using back-to-back converters with a centralized control scheme. The OPF objective is to minimize system losses by determining the optimal dispatch for generators, shunt capacitors, and converters. The OPF constraints include the operational constraints of all HVac grid and converter stations. The resulting mixed-integer nonlinear programing problem is solved using a proposed framework based on the predictor-corrector primal-dual interior-point method. The proposed OPF formulation and solution approach are verified using a multi-frequency HVac transmission system that is modified from the IEEE 57-bus system. The results with the optimal dispatch from the proposed method during a simulated day show a significant loss reduction and an improved voltage regulation compared to those when an arbitrary dispatch is chosen. Purpose: The purpose of this study was to inspect the interactions between an anti-breast cancer, TAM, with model of lipid membranes composed of either zwitterionic DPPC LUVs or anionic DPPG LUVs and how they depend on ionic strength and cholesterol. Methods: The Kp of TAM into DPPC and DPPG LUVs were determined at three different NaCl concentrations by second derivative UV-Vis spectrophotometry. The effect of cholesterol incorporated into these LUVs on TAM's Kp was also assessed. The ATR-FTIR measurements were carried out to verify structural changes within the acyl chain and head group regions of the liposomes upon TAM partitioning. Results: Increasing salt concentration produced negligible impact on the partitioning of TAM into DPPC bilayer as its Kp remained unaffected whilst induced outstanding reduction of TAM's Kp into DPPG liposomes. Furthermore, TAM was found to disorder the lipids' acyl chains, which could result in an increase in the membrane fluidity, a necessary piece of information to refer to when prescribing TAM dosage for administration. Additionally, cholesterol showed astoundingly opposite contribution to the partitioning of TAM into the LUVs, as its Kp value reduced in DPPC/Chol bilayer yet increased in DPPG/Chol liposomes. Conclusion: Ionic strength and cholesterol play a noteworthy role in regulation of TAM partitioning into lipid membranes as they could obstruct or promote such action. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Soybean plants are sensitive to the effects of abiotic stress and belong to the group of crops that are less drought and salt tolerant. The identification of genes involved in mechanisms targeted to cope with water shortage is an essential and indispensable task for improving the drought and salt tolerance of soybean. One of the approaches for obtaining lines with increased tolerance is genetic modification. The dehydration-responsive element binding proteins (DREBs), belonging to the AP2 family, are trans-active transcription factors that bind to the cis-sequences of the promoter for activating the expression of the target genes that mediate drought and salt tolerant responses. In this study, the GmDREB6 transgene was introduced into DT84 cultivar soybean plants, using Agrobacterium-mediated transformation. The efficacy of GmDREB6 overexpression in enhancing the transcriptional level of GmP5CS and proline accumulation in genetically modified (GM) soybean plants was also assayed. The results demonstrated that ten GM soybean plants (T0 generation) were successfully generated from the transformed explants after selecting with kanamycin. Among these plantlets, the presence of the GmDREB6 transgene was confirmed in nine plants by Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR), and eight plants showed positive results in Southern blot. In the T1 generation, four GM lines, labelled T1-2, T1-4, T1-7, and T1-10, expressed the recombinant GmDREB6 protein. In the T2 generation, the transcriptional levels of the GmP5CS gene were higher in the GM lines than in the non-transgenic plants, under normal conditions and also under conditions of salt stress and drought, ranging from 1.36 to 2.01 folds and 1.58 to 3.16 folds that of the non-transgenic plants, respectively. The proline content was higher in the four GM soybean lines, T2-2, T2-4, T2-7, and T2-10 than in the non-transgenic plants, ranging from 0.82 μmol/g to 4.03 μmol/g. The proline content was the highest in the GM T2-7 line (7.77 μmol/g). In GM soybean lines, T2-2, T2-4, T2-7, and T2-10 proline content increased after plants were subjected to salt stress for seven days, in comparison to that under normal conditions, and ranged from 247.83% to 300%, while that of the non-GM plants was 238.22%. • The theoretical procedures for shifting the frequency of solitons are proposed. • These procedures are confirmed by numerical simulations with the propagation model. • Stabilizing soliton propagation and controlling soliton collisions are presented. • The results open a way for controlling soliton frequency and soliton dynamics. We develop the theoretical procedures for shifting the frequency of a single soliton and of a sequence of solitons of the nonlinear Schrödinger equation. The procedures are based on simple transformations of the soliton pattern in the Fourier domain and on the shape-preserving property of solitons. These theoretical frequency shifting procedures are verified by numerical simulations with the nonlinear Schrödinger equation using the split-step Fourier method. In order to demonstrate the use of the frequency shifting procedures, two important applications are presented: (1) stabilization of the propagation of solitons in waveguides with frequency dependent linear gain-loss; (2) induction of repeated soliton collisions in waveguides with weak cubic loss. There has been a growing interest in how teaching might be informed by learning design (LD), with a promising method for investigating LD being offered by the emerging field of learning analytics (LA). In this study, we used a novel LA for LD methodology to investigate the implementation of LD in an online distance learning context. A key innovation is the focus on patterns of LD. Using data from the virtual learning environment, outcomes data, and self-reports, for 47,784 students, we investigated the impact of those patterns on student behaviour, pass rates and satisfaction. A second innovation involves social network analysis. Our study revealed that different patterns of LD were associated with statistically significant differences in behaviour, but not in pass rates or satisfaction. Nonetheless, the study highlights that applying LA to LD might, in a virtuous circle, contribute to the validity and effectiveness of both, and to the enhancement of online distance learning. Purpose: The purpose of this paper is to evaluate the status of entrepreneurship education (EE) in Australia, replicating and expanding a similar study in 2015. The aim is to review neoteric global best practice EE initiatives, enabling the examination and embedding of EE offerings and initiatives at all 40 higher education institutions (HEIs) in Australia. Design/methodology/approach: The authors introduce a review of prominent and recent global EE scholarship, enabling an iterative and emergent inquiry perspective aligned to inductive and nascent multi-method empirical research associated with theoretical underpinnings of symbolic and substantive management theory. Findings: This paper highlights the sparse and inconsistent distribution of EE programs and initiatives across all 40 Australian HEIs, particularly against the backdrop of rapidly expanding start-up and entrepreneurship ecosystems. Furthermore, outcomes provide best practice EE initiatives, which included staff mobility and transferability of skills. HEIs in Australia are experiencing a moderate EE boom, albeit marginally down on global EE transformation initiatives. Research limitations/implications: Limitation of the data is subject to availability and accuracy of online documents and material resources, although implications have been mitigated using multi-method research design. Practical implications: The findings provide critical grounding for researchers, practitioners and HEIs wishing to enhance EE within ever-expanding entrepreneurship ecosystems. In this paper, a two-stage optimization framework is proposed for optimal placement and centralized real-time control of low-voltage static var compensators (LV-SVCs) in unbalanced distribution circuits to achieve feeder level benefits namely voltage regulation and energy loss minimization. The number, locations, and the optimal real-time reactive power injections from the LV-SVCs are determined from a proposed three-phase unbalanced ac optimal power flow (ACOPF). The ACOPF is formulated as a multi-objective optimization with operating constraints written in rectangular coordinates. The resulting nonlinear nonconvex problem is solved using the predictor-corrector primal-dual interior point method. The proposed approach is scalable for application to large distribution circuits, treats the constraints of physical space limitations effectively, and can take advantage of communication capabilities of LV-SVCs for centralized real-time control. The benefits of the proposed real-time control of LV-SVCs as compared to their operation with local autonomous voltage-based distributed control is demonstrated. This paper proposes a novel power flow formulation and solution algorithm for a generalized large-scale interconnected transmission system encompassing multi-frequency HVac and HVdc grids having arbitrary numbers of buses, topologies, and operating frequencies. Back-to-back and ac/dc voltage-source converters are employed to interconnect and control the voltage and power interchange between two power grids operating at different frequencies. The power Flow formulation is based on a steady-state model of back-to-back and ac/dc converters operated in centralized and distributed droop control strategies. Each power grid is represented by a set of nonlinear power balance equations. These equations are solved simultaneously using a unified power flow algorithm, taking into account generator and converter limits. It is shown that the solution convergence is achieved rapidly despite the system size, topology, and converter control strategies. The efficacy and accuracy of the proposed steady-state solution algorithm are demonstrated by comparing the numerical solution to the one obtained by time-domain electromagnetic models of multi-frequency HVac and HVdc transmission systems with fully controllable back-to-back and ac/dc converters. Smart inverters provide additional control capability to help optimize the operation of distribution systems. This paper proposes a framework for exact optimal active and reactive power dispatch of distributed photovoltaic (PV) generation, switched capacitors, and voltage regulators in large multi-phase unbalanced distribution systems. The objectives of the optimal dispatch are minimization of the energy loss, PV active power curtailment, and operations of capacitors and voltage regulators, in addition to elimination of voltage violations and reverse power flow. The optimization problem is formulated in rectangular coordinates as a nonlinear, nonconvex problem. Effective computational strategies are proposed to allow the application of predictor-corrector primal-dual interior point method to solve optimization problems in real-time with a large number of constraints and variables, including discrete variables corresponding to switched capacitors and voltage regulators. The accuracy of the numerical solution and the ability to implement the proposed framework are validated using the unbalanced multi-phase IEEE 34-bus and EPRI 2,998-bus distribution systems with 15-minute load and PV data. Abstract Correlation of the fission product Cs-137, U, and Pu with burn-up has been used to develop a method for determining the U and Pu contents of items originating from 30 spent fuel assemblies (SFAs), which became unusable due to an event in 2003 at Paks Nuclear Power Plant (NPP), Hungary. A mixture of broken fuel rods, pellets, and parts of the cladding were repacked into 72 canisters, whose nuclear material content was to be determined. In this paper, the method has been updated for scanning Cs137 activity and the Cs134/Cs137 ratio along the canisters in 100 s real time intervals by an HPGe detector using a narrow collimator. The effect of mixed burn-up and the irregular fuel geometry was taken into account by using the so-called infinite energy method. The absorption correction factor seems to be constant for all canisters. This is probably due to the overwhelming effect of the thick absorbing water layer in front of canisters lowered down into the service pit, where the measurements were done. In recent decades, the treatment paradigm for noninfectious intermediate uveitis, posterior uveitis, and panuveitis, a group of intraocular inflammatory diseases, has included systemic and local (periocular or intraocular) corticosteroids, biologics, and other steroid-sparing immunomodulatory therapy agents. Recently, an intravitreal formulation of sirolimus, an immunosuppressant that inhibits the mammalian target of rapamycin, a key regulator of cell growth in the immune system, was developed. On the basis of this mechanism and the local method of delivery, it was hypothesized that intravitreal sirolimus can improve ocular inflammation in patients with noninfectious intermediate uveitis, posterior uveitis, and panuveitis, with minimal systemic exposure and systemic adverse events (AEs). This review summarizes the pharmacokinetics, efficacy, and safety results of intravitreal sirolimus from 3 preclinical studies and 4 phase 1–3 clinical studies. Preclinical studies in rabbits showed that 22 to 220 μg intravitreal sirolimus results in sustained release of sirolimus in the vitreous for 2 months or more, with systemic concentrations below the threshold for systemic immunosuppression (approximately 8 ng/ml). Subsequently, 2 phase 1 studies (n = 50 and n = 30) established that intravitreal sirolimus improves ocular inflammation in humans. Further investigation in phase 2 and 3 studies (n = 24 and n = 347, respectively) suggested that 440 μg has the best benefit-to-risk profile. In the phase 3 study, the proportion of patients who showed complete resolution of ocular inflammation at month 5 was significantly higher in the 440-μg group than in the 44-μg group (22.8% vs. 10.3%; P = 0.025, Fisher exact test). In addition, 47 of 69 patients (68.1%) who were treated with systemic corticosteroids at baseline discontinued corticosteroid use at month 5. No sirolimus-related systemic AEs were reported in phase 1–3 studies. Collectively, these preclinical and clinical study data of intravitreal sirolimus support the therapeutic rationale of treating noninfectious uveitis with a local mammalian target of rapamycin inhibitor and suggest that 440 μg intravitreal sirolimus has the potential to be an effective and well-tolerated anti-inflammatory and corticosteroid-sparing treatment for noninfectious intermediate uveitis, posterior uveitis, and panuveitis. Adinandra bockiana E. Pritz. ex Diels is a potential plant of the Adinandra genus that contains bioactive. This study presents the results of assembly and annotation of the chloroplast (cp) genome of A. bockiana, a comparison of it with Adinandra cp genomes of several other species, and proposed candidate DNA barcoding from the cp genome. The A. bockiana cp genome was reconstructed by raw reads from total DNA, assembling reads (each read is 150 bp in length) into contigs, and then the contigs were assembled again to sequence the complete cp genome. The A. bockiana cp genome is 156,284 bp in length and consists of a large single-copy (LSC) region of 85,693 bp, a small single-copy (SSC) region of 18,411 bp, a pair of inverted repeats (IRa and IRb) of 26,090 bp each, 129 functional genes, 51 SSRs, and other 70 repeat structures. The functional genes of the A. bockiana cp genome contain 84 protein-coding genes, 37 transfer RNA genes, and eight ribosomal RNA genes. A comparative analysis of the A. bockiana cp genome with the rest of the public Adinandra genomes showed that the number of genes and their structure were highly conserved in the surveyed group. Based on complete cp genomes and matK and trnL sequences of some species of the Adinandra and other genera, molecular phylogenetic trees were established which show the genetic relationships of the species belonging to the Pentaphylacaceae family. Fierce aerospace competition among global superpowers has resulted in strong public attention on satellite launch events in the U.S. Given limited attentional resources, U.S. investors pay more attention to market-level shocks than to firm-specific shocks, making stock returns comove more with the market on satellite launch days than on other days. We find that the effect is significantly stronger for military-related satellite launches, launches before the dissolution of the former Soviet Union, and international satellite launches by other competitors, highlighting a greater concern for national security. A trading strategy that exploits the potential satellite-induced mispricing yields an annualized abnormal risk-adjusted return of up to 17% within the three-day window around launch date. Our results are robust to a battery of robustness analyses that consider the different characteristics of satellite launches, the exclusion of aerospace firms, and stock return comovement with industries. Abstract: The role of vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF), including in retinal vascular diseases, has been well studied, and pharmacological blockade of VEGF is the gold standard of treatment for neovascular age‐related macular degeneration, retinal vein occlusion and diabetic macular oedema. Placental growth factor (PGF, previously known as PlGF), a homologue of VEGF, is a multifunctional peptide associated with angiogenesis‐dependent pathologies in the eye and non‐ocular conditions. Animal studies using genetic modification and pharmacological treatment have demonstrated a mechanistic role for PGF in pathological angiogenesis. Inhibition decreases neovascularization and microvascular abnormalities across different models, including oxygen‐induced retinopathy, laser‐induced choroidal neovascularization and in diabetic mice exhibiting retinopathies. High levels of PGF have been found in the vitreous of patients with diabetic retinopathy. Despite these strong animal data, the exact role of PGF in pathological angiogenesis in retinal vascular diseases remains to be defined, and the benefits of PGF‐specific inhibition in humans with retinal neovascular diseases and macular oedema remain controversial. Comparative effectiveness research studies in patients with diabetic retinal disease have shown that treatment that inhibits both VEGF and PGF may provide superior outcomes in certain patients compared with treatment that inhibits only VEGF. This review summarizes current knowledge of PGF, including its relationship to VEGF and its role in pathological angiogenesis in retinal diseases, and identifies some key unanswered questions about PGF that can serve as a pathway for future basic, translational and clinical research. Many researchers who study the impact of computer-based assessment (CBA) focus on the affordances or complexities of CBA approaches in comparison to traditional assessment methods. This study examines how CBA approaches were configured within and between modules, and the impact of assessment design on students' engagement, satisfaction, and pass rates. The analysis was conducted using a combination of longitudinal visualisations, correlational analysis, and fixed-effect models on 74 undergraduate modules and their 72,377 students. Our findings indicate that educators designed very different assessment strategies, which significantly influenced student engagement as measured by time spent in the virtual learning environment (VLE). Weekly analyses indicated that assessment activities were balanced with other learning activities, which suggests that educators tended to aim for a consistent workload when designing assessment strategies. Since most of the assessments were computer-based, students spent more time on the VLE during assessment weeks. By controlling for heterogeneity within and between modules, learning design could explain up to 69% of the variability in students' time spent on the VLE. Furthermore, assessment activities were significantly related to pass rates, but no clear relation with satisfaction was found. Application of cattle slurry to grassland soil has environmental impacts such as ammonia volatilization and greenhouse gas emissions. The extent, however, depends on application method and soil conditions through their effects on infiltration and oxygen (O 2 ) availability during subsequent decomposition. Here, we applied O 2 planar optode and N 2 O isotopomer techniques to investigate the linkage between soil O 2 dynamics and N 2 O production pathways in soils treated with cattle slurry (treatment CS) and tested the effect of the nitrification inhibitor 3,4-dimethyl pyrazole phosphate, DMPP (treatment CSD). Two-dimensional planar optode images of soil O 2 over time revealed that O 2 depletion ultimately extended to 1.5 cm depth in CS, as opposed to 1.0 cm in CSD. The 15 N site preference (SP) and δ 18 O of emitted N 2 O varied between 11-25‰ and 35–47‰, respectively, indicating a mixture of production sources during the incubation. An early peak of N 2 O emission occurred in both manure treated soils by day 1, with the highest SP values and δ 18 O-N 2 O indicating that fungal denitrification of nitrate in the soil was the main contributor to the early peak. During the first five days, N 2 O fluxes in CS and CSD treatments were similar, and hence nitrification did not influence N 2 O emissions for several days under the experimental conditions of this study. The second peak of N 2 O emission occurring only in CS peaking around day 14, could be due to both nitrification and bacterial denitrification of nitrate produced during incubation. Over 18 days, the application of DMPP substantially mitigated N 2 O emissions by 60% compared to untreated CS in the investigated system which in terms of aeration status corresponded to wet or compacted grassland soil. Using this novel combination of O 2 planar optode imaging and N 2 O isotopomer analysis, our results provide a better understanding of the coupled O 2 and N 2 O dynamics in manure-amended soils, and they illustrate the roles of bacterial and fungal denitrification in N 2 O production in grassland soil under high soil water content. To study the efficacy and safety of suprachoroidal CLS-TA (proprietary suspension of triamcinolone acetonide) in uveitic macular edema (UME) with and without concurrent systemic corticosteroid or steroid-sparing therapy (ST). Post hoc analysis of the PEACHTREE phase 3 randomized trial. Among UME patients receiving no ST, at week 24, mean BCVA change was +15.6 letters in 68 CLS-TA patients versus +4.9 letters in 49 sham-control patients (p <.001), while mean CST change was −169.8 µm versus −10.3 µm, respectively (p <.001). Among patients receiving ST, at week 24, mean BCVA change was +9.4 letters in 28 CLS-TA patients versus −3.2 letters in 15 sham-control patients (p =.019), while mean CST change was −108.3 µm versus −43.5 µm, respectively (p =.190). We study transmission stability and dynamics of pulse amplitudes in N -channel soliton-based optical waveguide systems, taking into account second-order dispersion, Kerr nonlinearity, delayed Raman response, and frequency dependent linear gain–loss. We carry out numerical simulations with systems of N coupled nonlinear Schrödinger (NLS) equations and compare the results with the predictions of a simplified predator–prey model for Raman-induced amplitude dynamics. Coupled-NLS simulations for single-fiber transmission with 2 ≤ N ≤ 4 frequency channels show stable oscillatory dynamics of soliton amplitudes at short-to-intermediate distances, in excellent agreement with the predator–prey model's predictions. However, at larger distances, we observe transmission destabilization due to resonant formation of radiative sidebands, which is caused by Kerr nonlinearity. The presence of linear gain–loss in a single fiber leads to a limited increase in transmission stability. Significantly stronger enhancement of transmission stability is achieved in a nonlinear N -waveguide coupler due to efficient suppression of radiative sideband generation by the linear gain–loss. As a result, the distances along which stable Raman-induced dynamics of soliton amplitudes is observed are significantly larger in the waveguide coupler system compared with the single-fiber system. Purpose To evaluate the efficacy and safety of intravitreal sirolimus in the treatment of noninfectious uveitis (NIU) of the posterior segment (i.e., posterior, intermediate, or panuveitis). Design Phase III, randomized, double-masked, active-controlled, 6-month study with intravitreal sirolimus. Participants Adults with active NIU of the posterior segment (intermediate, posterior, or panuveitis), defined as a vitreous haze (VH) score >1+. Subjects discontinued NIU medications before baseline, except for systemic corticosteroids, which were allowed only for those already receiving them at baseline and were rapidly tapered after baseline per protocol. Methods Intravitreal sirolimus assigned 1:1:1 at doses of 44 (active control), 440, or 880 μg, administered on Days 1, 60, and 120. Main Outcome Measures The primary efficacy outcome was the percentage of subjects with VH 0 response at Month 5 (study eye) without use of rescue therapy. Secondary outcomes at Month 5 were VH 0 or 0.5+ response rate, corticosteroid tapering success rate (i.e., tapering to a prednisone-equivalent dosage of ≤5 mg/day), and changes in best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA). Adverse events during the double-masked treatment period are presented. Results A total of 347 subjects were randomized. Higher proportions of subjects in the intravitreal sirolimus 440 μg (22.8%; P = 0.025) and 880 μg (16.4%; P = 0.182) groups met the primary end point than in the 44 μg group (10.3%). Likewise, higher proportions of subjects in the 440 μg (52.6%; P = 0.008) and 880 μg (43.1%; P = 0.228) groups achieved a VH score of 0 or 0.5+ than in the 44 μg group (35.0%). Mean BCVA was maintained throughout the study in each dose group, and the majority of subjects receiving corticosteroids at baseline successfully tapered off corticosteroids (44 μg [63.6%], 440 μg [76.9%], and 880 μg [66.7%]). Adverse events in the treatment and active control groups were similar in incidence, and all doses were well tolerated. Conclusions Intravitreal sirolimus 440 μg demonstrated a significant improvement in ocular inflammation with preservation of BCVA in subjects with active NIU of the posterior segment. Estimation of the temperature-dependent absorption coefficient in laser welding process is known as high non-linear inverse problem. Thus, it is necessary to propose a robust and efficiency method to estimate this coefficient. In this paper, a modified Newton–Raphson method combined with the concept of future time is presented to estimate the absorption coefficient in the laser welding process. The special characteristics of this method are that no preselected functional form for the unknown absorption coefficient is necessary and non-linear least-squares is not needed in the algorithm. Two examples have been fulfilled to demonstrate the proposed method. The results show that the proposed method is an accurate, stable, and efficient method to estimate the absorption coefficient in the laser welding process. In addition, two kinds of future time description are considered in this work. One is a linear type and the other is a constant type. From the estimated results, it is evidenced that the accuracy of the estimated results for the linear type of future time description is higher than that for the constant one of future time description. Baculoviruses are recognized as viral workhorses of biotechnology, being used for production of vaccines, complex recombinant proteins, gene delivery vectors' and safe biological pesticides. Improving production yields and understanding the interactions of the virus and its host cell are important aspects of ensuring baculovirus-based processes are commercially competitive. This study aims at potential optimization of host cells used in in vitro virus production by systemically investigating changes in host gene expression in response to virus replication and transcription inside host cells. The study focuses on in vitro interactions of the Helicoverpa armigera virus with Helicoverpa zea insect cells. We used 22 genome-wide microarrays to simultaneously measure both virus and host genes in infected cells in multiple batch suspension cultures, representing high- and low-producing infection conditions. Among 661 differentially expressed genes, we identified a core set of 59 host genes consistently overexpressed post infection, with strong overrepresentation of genes involved in retrotransposition, protein processing in the endoplasmic reticulum, and ubiquitin-mediated proteolysis. Applying a whole genome correlation network analysis to link gene expression to productivity, we revealed 18 key genes significantly associated to virus yield. In addition, this study is among the first to perform a genome-wide expression study for a major baculovirus group II strain, the H. armigera virus, extending current understanding of baculovirus-insect interactions, which mainly focuses on group I viruses. Learning analytics seeks to enhance learning processes through systematic measurements of learning-related data and to provide informative feedback to learners and educators (Siemens & Long, 2011). This study examined the use of preferred feedback modes in students by using a dispositional learning-analytics framework, combining learning-disposition data with data extracted from digital systems. We analyzed the use of feedback of 1,062 students taking an introductory mathematics and statistics course, enhanced with digital tools. Our findings indicated that compared with hints, fully worked-out solutions demonstrated a stronger effect on academic performance and acted as a better mediator between learning dispositions and academic performance. The evolution of fairy tales often involves complex interactions between oral and literary traditions, which can be difficult to tease apart when investigating their origins. Here, we show how computer-assisted stemmatology can be productively applied to this problem, focusing on a long-standing controversy in fairy tale scholarship: did Little Red Riding Hood originate as an oral tale that was adapted by Perrault and the Brothers Grimm, or is the oral tradition in fact derived from literary texts? We address this question by analysing a sample of twenty-four literal and oral versions of the fairy tale Little Red Riding Hood using several methods of phylogenetic analysis, including maximum parsimony and two network- based approaches (NeighbourNet and TRex). While the results of these analyses are more compatible with the oral origins hypothesis than the alternative literary origins hypothesis, their interpretation is problematized by the fact that none of them explicitly model lineal (i.e. ancestor-descendent) relationships among taxa. We therefore present a new likelihood-based method, PhyloDAG, which was specifically developed to model lineal as well as collateral and reticulate relationships. A comparison of different structures derived from PhyloDAG provided a much clearer result than the maximum parsimony, NeighbourNet or TRex analyses, and strongly favoured the hypothesis that literary versions of Little Red Riding Hood were originally based on oral folktales, rather than vice versa. Purpose To evaluate visual and anatomic outcomes after intravitreal aflibercept injection (IAI) versus laser in diabetic macular edema (DME) patients with and without prior anti–vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) treatment for DME. Design Post hoc analysis of eyes from 2 similarly designed, phase 3 trials, VISTA and VIVID. Participants Patients (eyes) with DME with central involvement from VISTA (n = 461) and VIVID (n = 404). Methods Eyes received IAI 2 mg every 4 weeks (2q4), IAI 2 mg every 8 weeks after 5 monthly doses (2q8), or macular laser photocoagulation. Main Outcome Measures This study reports exploratory outcomes through week 100. Analyses focused on VISTA because more patients received prior anti-VEGF therapy in VISTA (42.9%) versus VIVID (8.9%). Results Of 42.9% of patients in VISTA who received prior anti-VEGF treatment, 83.3% to 92.6% received ≥ 1 prior injections of bevacizumab, and 71.4% to 82.4% received bevacizumab only as prior anti-VEGF treatment for a duration ranging from 28 days to 3.9 years. In patients with prior anti-VEGF treatment, mean best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA) changes from baseline in the IAI 2q4, IAI 2q8, and laser groups were +10.4 letters, +10.5 letters, and −0.7 letters at week 52 and +10.9 letters, +10.8 letters, and −0.8 letters at week 100, respectively. Corresponding changes in patients without prior anti-VEGF treatment were +14.1 letters, +11.0 letters, and +0.9 letters at week 52 and +12.0 letters, +11.3 letters, and +2.1 letters at week 100. In patients with prior anti-VEGF treatment, mean reductions in central retinal thickness were 180.2 μm, 192.2 μm, and 90.9 μm at week 52 and 180.1 μm, 196.4 μm, and 94.1 μm at week 100. Corresponding reductions in patients without prior anti-VEGF treatment were 190.3 μm, 175.7 μm, and 61.0 μm at week 52 and 200.0 μm, 186.7 μm, and 76.9 μm at week 100. The most frequent serious ocular adverse event was vitreous hemorrhage (1.3%, 0.7%, and 1.9%, respectively). Conclusions Visual and anatomic improvements over laser with both IAI regimens were significant and similar through week 100 in subgroups of patients in VISTA with and without prior anti-VEGF treatment for DME.
