1. Laser Ultrasonic Technique for Simultaneous Measurement of Thickness, Slope, and Wave Velocities for Slope Plate in the Thermoelastic Regime

Abstract

This study introduces a reliable method for simultaneously determining the thickness, slope, and ultrasonic velocities of slope plates using laser ultrasonic techniques without any damage in the thermoelastic regime. The method involves solving a system of equations to determine the arrival times of multiple signals displayed on a waveform. Numerical simulations indicate that the velocity of the skimming longitudinal wave remains constant when the Rayleigh wave does not overlap with its signal. Consequently, a prediction model for aluminum alloy has been established, enabling the estimation of the constant ratio between the velocities of skimming longitudinal and bulk longitudinal waves based on the skimming longitudinal velocity obtained by scanning the generating laser along the material's surface. This ratio, approximately 0.950, facilitates the combination of the skimming longitudinal wave with the reflected and mode-converted waves from the specimen's back surface to deduce the desired parameters. The method successfully determined the thickness, slope, and wave velocities of several specimens with slopes ranging from 0% to 1.96% and a maximum thickness of about 10 mm. Evaluating the influence of the size of the disk ultrasound source produced by the unfocused laser beam, we found that the radius of the disk source should be considered when calculating the arrival time of the skimming longitudinal wave. The root mean square deviation in measuring thickness, slope, longitudinal wave velocity, and shear wave velocity were approximately 0.100 mm, 0.10 %, 70 m/s, and 20 m/s, respectively. An assessment of the measured results, based on the root mean square deviation and uncertainty across all specimens, demonstrates the practical feasibility of the proposed method

Abstract

Pneumorrhachis (PR) is an uncommon condition characterized by the accumulation of air within the spinal canal. This finding may occur due to various causes, mostly after trauma and medical procedures. It can manifest with various features depending on the underlying cause, the location, and the extent of the air trapped. Clinically, the symptoms in affected patients can span a spectrum, ranging from being asymptomatic to manifesting as radiculopathies resulting from compression. The pneumorrhachis-related cauda equina syndrome is incredibly rare and typically appears as a large volume of air causing compression or irritation of the nerve roots in the lower spinal cord. In this report, we present a female patient whose cauda equina syndrome developed as a result of accidental extradural pneumorrhachis after epidural injection in the lumbar spine.

14. On Taking Advantage of Opportunistic Meta-knowledge to Reduce Configuration Spaces for Automated Machine Learning

Abstract

The automated machine learning (AutoML) process can require searching through complex configuration spaces of not only machine learning (ML) components and their hyperparameters but also ways of composing them together, i.e. forming ML pipelines. Optimisation efficiency and the model accuracy attainable for a fixed time budget suffer if this pipeline configuration space is excessively large. A key research question is whether it is both possible and practical to preemptively avoid costly evaluations of poorly performing ML pipelines by leveraging their historical performance for various ML tasks, i.e. meta-knowledge. The previous experience comes in the form of classifier/regressor accuracy rankings derived from either (1) a substantial but non-exhaustive number of pipeline evaluations made during historical AutoML runs, i.e. 'opportunistic' meta-knowledge, or (2) comprehensive cross-validated evaluations of classifiers/regressors with default hyperparameters, i.e. 'systematic' meta-knowledge. Numerous experiments with the AutoWeka4MCPS package suggest that (1) opportunistic/systematic meta-knowledge can improve ML outcomes, typically in line with how relevant that meta-knowledge is, and (2) configuration-space culling is optimal when it is neither too conservative nor too radical. However, the utility and impact of meta-knowledge depend critically on numerous facets of its generation and exploitation, warranting extensive analysis; these are often overlooked/underappreciated within AutoML and meta-learning literature. In particular, we observe strong sensitivity to the `challenge' of a dataset, i.e. whether specificity in choosing a predictor leads to significantly better performance. Abstract

In virtual desktop infrastructure (VDI) environments, the remote display protocol has a big responsibility to transmit video data from a data center-hosted desktop to the endpoint. The protocol must ensure a high level of client perceived end-to-end quality of service (QoS) under heavy work load conditions. Each remote display protocol works differently depending on the network and which applications are being delivered. In healthcare applications, doctors and nurses can use mobile devices directly to monitor patients. Moreover, the ability to implement tasks requiring high consumption of CPU and other resources is applicable to a variety of applications including research and cloud gaming. Such computer games and complex processes will run on powerful cloud servers and the screen contents will be transmitted to the client. TO enable such applications, remote display technology requires further enhancements to meet more stringent requirements on bandwidth and QoS, an to allow realtime operation. In this paper, we present an architecture including flexible QoS control to improve the user quality of experience (QoE). The QoS control is developed based on linear regression modeling using historical network data. Additionally, the architecture includes a novel compression algorithm of 2D images, designed to guarantee the best image quality and to reduce video delay; this algorithm is based on k-means clustering and can satisfy the requirements of realtime onboard processing. Abstract

(1) Background: Atrial fibrillation (AF) poses a growing cardiovascular challenge globally, with significant implications in Vietnam. This study aimed to investigate the impact of AF on ischemic stroke/transient ischemic attack (TIA) and clinical outcomes, as well as the utilization of oral anticoagulation (OAC) therapy in Vietnam. (2) Methods: Data from the Registry of Stroke Care Quality (RES-Q) across 66 hospitals in Vietnam between 2017 and 2023 were utilized. Patients diagnosed with ischemic stroke or TIA were included, and clinical characteristics, pre- and post-hospitalization medication, and hospitalized outcomes were examined. (3) Results: Of 94,144 patients, 15.1% had AF. Patients with AF were older and had a higher prevalence of heart failure and more severe strokes. AF was associated with increased mortality during hospitalization and a poorer prognosis. In AF patients, anticoagulation therapy utilization increased from 15.8% pre-hospitalization to 82.4% at discharge, with a preference for direct oral anticoagulants. (4) Conclusions: AF significantly impacts ischemic stroke/TIA outcomes in Vietnam. Pre-hospitalization and anticoagulation therapy utilization were low but improved at discharge. These findings emphasize the need for improved AF management and stroke prevention strategies in developing countries.

23. Exploring Opportunistic Meta-knowledge to Reduce Search Spaces for Automated Machine Learning

Abstract

Machine learning (ML) pipeline composition and optimisation have been studied to seek multi-stage ML models, i.e. preprocessor-inclusive, that are both valid and well-performing. These processes typically require the design and traversal of complex configuration spaces consisting of not just individual ML components and their hyperparameters, but also higher-level pipeline structures that link these components together. Optimisation efficiency and resulting ML-model accuracy both suffer if this pipeline search space is unwieldy and excessively large; it becomes an appealing notion to avoid costly evaluations of poorly performing ML components ahead of time. Accordingly, this paper investigates whether, based on previous experience, a pool of available classifiers/regressors can be preemptively culled ahead of initiating a pipeline composition/optimisation process for a new ML problem, i.e. dataset. The previous experience comes in the form of classifier/regressor accuracy rankings derived, with loose assumptions, from a substantial but non-exhaustive number of pipeline evaluations; this meta-knowledge is considered 'opportunistic'. Numerous experiments with the AutoWeka4MCPS package, including ones leveraging similarities between datasets via the relative landmarking method, show that, despite its seeming unreliability, opportunistic meta-knowledge can improve ML outcomes. However, results also indicate that the culling of classifiers/regressors should not be too severe either. In effect, it is better to search through a 'top tier' of recommended predictors than to pin hopes onto one previously supreme performer.

25. Incremental Search Space Construction for Machine Learning Pipeline Synthesis

Abstract

Automated machine learning (AutoML) aims for constructing machine learning (ML) pipelines automatically. Many studies have investigated efficient methods for algorithm selection and hyperparameter optimization. However, methods for ML pipeline synthesis and optimization considering the impact of complex pipeline structures containing multiple preprocessing and classification algorithms have not been studied thoroughly. In this paper, we propose a data-centric approach based on meta-features for pipeline construction and hyperparameter optimization inspired by human behavior. By expanding the pipeline search space incrementally in combination with meta-features of intermediate data sets, we are able to prune the pipeline structure search space efficiently. Consequently, flexible and data set specific ML pipelines can be constructed. 26. AutoWeka4MCPS-AVATAR: Accelerating Automated Machine Learning Pipeline Composition and Optimisation

Abstract

Automated machine learning pipeline (ML) composition and optimisation aim at automating the process of finding the most promising ML pipelines within allocated resources (i.e., time, CPU and memory). Existing methods, such as Bayesian-based and genetic-based optimisation, which are implemented in Auto-Weka, Auto-sklearn and TPOT, evaluate pipelines by executing them. Therefore, the pipeline composition and optimisation of these methods frequently require a tremendous amount of time that prevents them from exploring complex pipelines to find better predictive models. To further explore this research challenge, we have conducted experiments showing that many of the generated pipelines are invalid in the first place, and attempting to execute them is a waste of time and resources. To address this issue, we propose a novel method to evaluate the validity of ML pipelines, without their execution, using a surrogate model (AVATAR). The AVATAR generates a knowledge base by automatically learning the capabilities and effects of ML algorithms on datasets' characteristics. This knowledge base is used for a simplified mapping from an original ML pipeline to a surrogate model which is a Petri net based pipeline. Instead of executing the original ML pipeline to evaluate its validity, the AVATAR evaluates its surrogate model constructed by capabilities and effects of the ML pipeline components and input/output simplified mappings. Evaluating this surrogate model is less resource-intensive than the execution of the original pipeline. As a result, the AVATAR enables the pipeline composition and optimisation methods to evaluate more pipelines by quickly rejecting invalid pipelines. We integrate the AVATAR into the sequential model-based algorithm configuration (SMAC). 28. Improving The Performance Of The K-means Algorithm

Abstract

The Incremental K-means (IKM), an improved version of K-means (KM), was introduced to improve the clustering quality of KM significantly. However, the speed of IKM is slower than KM. My thesis proposes two algorithms to speed up IKM while remaining the quality of its clustering result approximately. The first algorithm, called Divisive K-means, improves the speed of IKM by speeding up its splitting process of clusters. Testing with UCI Machine Learning data sets, the new algorithm achieves the empirically global optimum as IKM and has lower complexity, $O(k*log_{2}k*n)$, than IKM, $O(k^{2}n)$. The second algorithm, called Parallel Two-Phase K-means (Par2PK-means), parallelizes IKM by employing the model of Two-Phase K-means. In this paper, the effect of temperature on the refractive index of Carbon disulfide liquid based on the influence of temperature on the Sellmeier coefficient has been presented. The effect of temperature on the liquid refractive index of Carbon disulfide in the visible and infrared regions according to the expression of M. Chemnitz was also investigated. From the survey results, it is concluded that as the wavelength increases, the refractive index of Carbon disulfide decreases, but when the temperature is increased then the refractive index of Carbon disulfide decreases faster.

However, the country is yet to become successful in reducing pesticide use mostly because of policy implementation and inadequate understanding of farmers. Abstract

Using unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) is an effective way to gather data from Internet of Things (IoT) devices. To reduce data gathering time and redundancy, thereby enabling the timely response of state-of-the-art systems, one can partition a network into clusters and perform aggregation within each cluster. Existing works solved the UAV trajectory planning problem, in which the energy consumption and/or flight time of the UAV is the minimization objective. The aggregation scheduling within each cluster was neglected, and they assumed that data must be ready when the UAV arrives at the cluster heads (CHs). This paper addresses the minimum time aggregation scheduling problem in duty-cycled networks with a single UAV. We propose an adaptive clustering method that takes into account the trajectory and speed of the UAV. The transmission schedule of IoT devices and the UAV departure times are jointly computed so that (1) the UAV flies continuously throughout the shortest path among the CHs to minimize the hovering time and energy consumption, and (2) data are aggregated at each CH right before the UAV arrival, to maximize the data freshness. Abstract

Silver–zirconia nanoparticles (Ag–ZrO2 NPs) were synthesized via an in situ strategy at room temperature using NaBH4 as a reducing agent. The surface modification of ZrO2 nanoparticles with nano silver was confirmed through various characterization techniques including Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR), UV–vis Diffuse Reflectance Spectroscopy (UV–vis DRS), X-ray Diffraction (XRD), and Field Emission Scanning Electron Microscopy (FESEM). The obtained results demonstrated that Ag nanoparticles, with a crystallite size of approximately 12 nm, were uniformly distributed on the surface of ZrO2 nanoparticles. The incorporation of Ag nanoparticles to the ZrO2 nanoparticles led to increasing the light absorption ability and reducing the band gap of Ag–ZrO2 nanoparticles, thereby enhancing their photocatalytic performance under infrared lamp exposure. When 1 g/L of Ag–ZrO2 nanoparticles was employed to methylene blue (MB) solution, the degradation of MB reached 90 % after 5 h of exposure. Additionally, the Ag–ZrO2 nanoparticles exhibited a high antibacterial activity against two bacterial strains, E. coli and S. aureus. Abstract

(1) Background: Although the important role of dietary energy intake in regulating both cancer progression and host immunity has been widely recognized, it remains unclear whether dietary calorie restriction (CR) has any impact on anti-tumor immune responses. (2) Methods: Using an immunogenic B16 melanoma cell expressing ovalbumin (B16-OVA), we examined the effect of the CR diet on B16-OVA tumor growth and host immune responses. To further test whether the CR diet affects the efficacy of cancer immunotherapy, we examined the effect of CR against anti-PD-1 monoclonal antibody (anti-PD-1 Ab) treatment. (3) Results: The CR diet significantly slowed down the tumor growth of B16-OVA without affecting both CD4+ and CD8+ T cell infiltration into the tumor. Although in vivo depletion of CD8+ T cells facilitated B16-OVA tumor growth in the control diet group, there was no significant change in the tumor growth in the CR diet group with or without CD8+ T cell-depletion. Anti-PD-1 Ab treatment lost its efficacy to suppress tumor growth along with the activation and metabolic shift of CD8+ T cells under CR condition. (4) Conclusions: Our present results suggest that a physical condition restricted in energy intake in cancer patients may impair CD8+ T cell immune surveillance and the efficacy of immunotherapy.
