The development of mangrove forest environmental services plays a crucial role in human health, economic development, and the security of countries worldwide. This study aims to establish and validate a model for assessing the factors influencing the willingness-to-pay for mangrove forest environmental services. The proposed model comprises four key factors: attitude, subjective norm, perceived behavior control, and environmental knowledge. Data were collected by surveying 235 individuals from various households in Phu Long commune, Vietnam. The Partial Least Squares—Structural Equation Modeling (PLS-SEM) methodology was employed for data analysis. The research findings reveal that perceived behavior control significantly impacted residents’ willingness-to-pay, followed by attitude, environmental knowledge, and subjective norms. Furthermore, certain demographic characteristics such as gender and family size mediate the relationship between independent and dependent variables. Based on the obtained results, several policy recommendations are put forward.

The conservation and sustainable development of mangrove forests play a critical role in stabilizing livelihoods, creating employment opportunities for neighboring communities, and preserving valuable ecosystems. This study assesses the willingness-to-pay residents for the environmental services of mangrove forests. The Theory of Planned Behavior, along with demographic factors, is utilized to investigate the willingness-to-pay for mangrove forest services among residents in Phu Long commune, Hai Phong City, a coastal area in northern Vietnam. Data were collected through in-depth interviews with 235 households from four villages in Phu Long commune, employing a contingent valuation scenario and the payment card technique. The interval regression model is applied to analyze the influencing factors and the level of willingness-to-pay for five priority mangrove forest environmental services, which include: (i) greenhouse gas absorption and storage (climate change mitigation), (ii) support for biodiversity conservation, (iii) prevention of extreme weather events, (iv) scenic beauty services, and (v) habitat services for species. The Akaike Information Criterion (AIC) and Bayesian Information Criterion (BIC) indices are used to select the most appropriate model. The estimated results from the interval regression model indicate that each household, on average, is willing to pay 327,792 Vietnamese dong (VND) per year for the five priority services. The analysis of factors reveals that attitudes, perceived behavioral control, and knowledge about mangrove forests have the most positive and significant impact on residents' willingness-to-pay. Based on these findings, several policy implications are proposed to enhance residents' willingness-to-pay for mangrove forest environmental services and promote the conservation and sustainable development of mangrove forests.

In this study, we evaluated the effect of probiotic bacteria Pediococcus pentosaceus supplemented at different inclusion levels in a control diet [basal diet containing 0.5% fructooligosaccharide (FOS)] on the growth performance, feed conversion ratio, immune response, and the disease resistance of whiteleg shrimp Litopenaeus vannamei juveniles against Vibrio parahaemolyticus. A control diet with 0.5% FOS but without P. pentosaceus supplementation (Control) was prepared. In addition, three other test diets were also formulated: control diet supplemented with P. pentosaceus at (i) 1 × 106 cfu g–1 diet (P1), (ii) 1 × 107 cfu g–1 diet (P2), or (iii) 1 × 108 cfu g–1 diet (P3). After a 60-day feeding trial, the experimental shrimps were challenged with V. parahaemolyticus. The results showed that dietary supplementation of P. pentosaceus significantly improved the growth performance and immune responses of L. vannamei juveniles. The juveniles that were fed with a P2 or P3 diet recorded the maximum increase in the final body weight, final length, weight gain, and survival rate. The total hemocyte counts, phenoloxidase, and lysozyme activity of shrimp fed with either of these two diets were significantly enhanced. The results also showed that juveniles fed with a P2 or P3 diet exhibited significantly lower mortality when challenged with V. parahaemolyticus. Overall results suggested that a combination of P. pentosaceus at the inclusion level of 1 × 107 cfu g–1 diet (P2) and 0.5% FOS could be considered as a potential synbiotic formulation for improving the growth, health, and robustness of L. vannamei.

From the ethyl acetate extract of the leaves of Amensiodendron chinense (Merr.) Hu (Sapindaceae), we isolated three known phenolic compounds: 4-hydroxy-3-methoxybenzaldehyde (1), methyl 3,4-dihydroxybenzoate (2), and 3,4-dihydroxybenzoic acid (3). We elucidated their chemical structures from the spectral data and compared them with those reported in the literature.

In this study, Bi0.5(Na1–xKx)0.5SnO3 (BNKS) ceramics (x = 0, 0.1, 0.2, 0.3, and 0.4) were fabricated via ultrasound wave before milling. The time of ball milling decreased from 20 to 1 h. The X-ray diffraction patterns show that the BNKS has a single-phase structure. When the potassium content increases, the phase structure of the ceramics changes from rhombohedral to tetragonal. When sintered at 1100 °C and x = 0.2, the ceramics’ physical properties are the best with the mass density of 5.59 g/cm3, the electromechanical coupling constants kp of 0,31 and kt of 0.27, the remanent polarization of 11.9 µC/cm; the dielectric constant εr of 1131, and the highest dielectric constant emax of 4800.

Soil salinity has a major impact on agricultural production. In a changing climate with rising sea-levels, low-lying coastal areas are increasingly inundated whereby saltwater gradually contaminates the soil. Drought prone areas may suffer from salinity due to high evapotranspiration rates in combination with the use of saline irrigation water. Salinity is difficult to monitor because soil moisture affects the soil’s spectral signature. We conducted Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy on alluvial and sandy soil samples in the coastal estuary of the Red River Delta. The soils are contaminated with NaCl, Na2CO3 and Na2SO4 salts. In an experiment of salt contamination, we established that three ranges of the spectrum were strongly influenced by both salt and moisture content in the soil, at wavenumbers 3200–3400 cm−1 (2.9–3.1 µm); 1600–1700 cm−1 (5.9–6.3 µm); 900–1100 cm−1 (9.1–11.1 µm). The Na2CO3 contaminated soil and the spectral value had a linear relationship between wavelengths 6.9 and 7.4 µm. At wavelength 6.99 µm, there was no relationship between absorbance and soil moisture, but the absorbance was proportional to the salt content (R2 = 0.85; RMSE = 0.68 g) and electrical conductivity (R2 = 0.50; RMSE = 3.8 dS/m). The relationship between soil moisture and spectral absorbance value was high at wavelengths below 6.7 µm, resulting in a quadratic relation between soil moisture and absorbance at wavelength 6.13 µm (R2 = 0.80; RMSE = 5.2%). The spectral signatures and equations might be useful for mapping salt-affected soils, particularly in difficult to access locations. Technological advances in thermal satellite sensors may offer possibilities for monitoring soil salinity.

The concentrations and profiles of paraquat, a kind of herbicide, were studied in water samples taken from a stream flowing through five villages of Mai Chau province, the Northern Vietnam, during dry and rainy seasons. In this study, paraquat was found at almost the sampling sites and showed an average concentration for paraquat to be 30.69 μg/L and with a maximum of 134.08 μg/L. The herbicide concentration tended to be the highest on the dry season because of the least rainfall and also the highest evaporation rate of water in the stream. For risk assessment of human health, a hazard index (HI) value was calculated for estimating the risk towards the residents. HQ in the dry and rainy season is from 0.0001 to 0.2448 and from 0.0001 to 0.0279, respectively. The results showed a minimum risk; however, there are concerns toward the danger of long-term exposure to the residents from the stream that could affect their life quality.

Lanthanum has been doped onto the surface of the natural Pyrolusite for simultaneous removal of phosphate and fluoride in aqueous solution. The adsorbent characterization of the materials was observed by the SEM, BET, and XRD techniques. The dynamics and isotherms models of fluoride and phosphate adsorption, with respect to pH, pHPZC, adsorbent dose, and effect of coexisting ions, were studied. The results showed that lanthanum doped Pyrolusite ore (LDPO) relatively highly adsorbed amount of phosphate and fluoride from aqueous solution. Phosphate and fluoride removal efficiencies of LDPO are approximately 97% and 95%, respectively. Pseudo-first order for kinetic studies of phosphate and fluoride removal of the LDPO was observed with high correlations for fluoride but weak correlations for phosphate. However, pseudo-second order for kinetic studies was high correlation for both phosphate and fluoride. The phosphate and fluoride adsorption capacities of the LDPO significantly decreased with the existence of coions (sulfate, chloride, and nitrate) in the aqueous solution.

Academic library managers need to understand the work motivation of their staff and what inspires librarians to maximum productivity and enthusiasm as well as what prevents them from striving to achieve excellence. In a literature search, the authors found only one previous study of the work motivation of librarians in Vietnam, indicating a need for further research in this area. Using a self-designed questionnaire based on Abraham Maslow's hierarchy of needs, the authors surveyed and interviewed 220 librarians who work in 78 libraries to find out what factors affect their job motivation. The study also points out differences in motivations between academic librarians and other librarians and makes recommendations to help library managers improve staff performance.

The ambient air quality during COVID-19 lockdowns has been improved in many cities in the world. This study is to assess the changes in persistent organic pollutants in PM2.5 during the COVID-19 lockdown in Hanoi. Individual organic species in PM2.5 ((e.g., polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), polychlorobiphenyls (PCBs), and organochlorine pesticides (OCPs)) were measured in an urban residential area in Hanoi from before the March 10th to April 22nd, 2020, including before the partial lockdown (BL) and the partial lockdown (PL) phases. During the PL phase, the concentration of Σ14PAHs and Σ28PCBs was reduced by 38 and 52% compared with the BL period, respectively. The diagnostic ratio method implied that the sources of PAHs within the PL phase had a less effect on traffic and industrial activities than in the BL phase. The characteristic ratio method indicated that PCBs were mixed by commercial product and combustion process in both the BL and the PL periods, however, the source of PCBs in the BL phase was influenced by municipal waste incineration more than those in the PL phase. The decreasing concentration of Σ20OCPs during the partial lockdown was attributed to the restriction of human activities during the quarantine period. The results suggested that the source of OCPs was probably derived from the usage of pesticides in current and, historical degradation or the transportation of pesticides from the soil to the atmosphere. Community-Based Tourism (CBT) stands as a pivotal approach for sustainable tourism and poverty alleviation in marginalized Northern Vietnamese rural communities. In Hoa Binh province, a region rich in ethnic diversity engaged in CBT, a research gap exists concerning CBT governance. This study addresses this gap by exploring how CBT governance is organized in five villages of Mai Chau and Da Bac district, Hoa Binh province, by identifying relevant actors, institutions, and resources, and how it addresses the challenge of sustainable (tourism) development. To this end, a combination of semistructured interviews, focus groups, and observation were used. The results showed the complexity of CBT governance in Hoa Binh, and the many different manifestations of CBT in the different villages. The paper also analyzed factors that explain these differences, such as the historical or ethnic composition of the local community, biophysical conditions, community rules, and attributes of external factors.
