Abstract

Accurate effort estimation is necessary for efficient management of software development projects, as it relates to human resource management. Ensemble methods, which employ multiple statistical and machine learning techniques, are more robust, reliable, and accurate effort estimation techniques. This study develops a stacking ensemble model based on optimization correction factors by integrating seven statistical and machine learning techniques (K‐nearest neighbor, random forest, support vector regression, multilayer perception, gradient boosting, linear regression, and decision tree). The grid search optimization method is used to obtain valid search ranges and optimal configuration values, allowing more accurate estimation. We conducted experiments to compare the proposed method with related methods, such as use case points‐based single methods, optimization correction factors‐based single methods, and ensemble methods. The estimation accuracies of the methods were evaluated using statistical tests and unbiased performance measures on a total of four datasets, thus demonstrating the effectiveness of the proposed method more clearly. The proposed method successfully maintained its estimation accuracy across the four experimental datasets and gave the best results in terms of the sum of squares errors, mean absolute error, root mean square error, mean balance relative error, mean inverted balance relative error, median of magnitude of relative error, and percentage of prediction (0.25). The p‐value for the t‐test showed that the proposed method is statistically superior to other methods in terms of estimation accuracy. The results show that the proposed method is a comprehensive approach for improving estimation accuracy and minimizing project risks in the early stages of software development. Abstract

Here, core-shell hydrogel beads for oral insulin delivery at intestine was reported, which was a target site for insulin absorption. The core-shell hydrogel beads were prepared using naturally derived alginate and chitosan polysaccharides by simple dropping technique. In order to effectively control leakage of insulin from core-shell hydrogel beads, insulin was embedded into the layered double hydroxides (LDHs). LDH/insulin-loaded complexes were firstly coated with chitosan, and then coated with alginate to generate core-shell hydrogel beads. The biocompatibility and angiogenic response of core-shell hydrogel beads were evaluated by direct contact of the beads with chick embryo chorioallantoic membrane, which indicates safety of the core-shell beads. The beads successfully retained the insulin within the core-shell structure at pH 1.2, indicating that insulin had a good protective effect in harsh acidic environments. Interestingly, insulin release starts at the simulated intestinal fluid (pH 6.8) and continue to release for 24 h in a sustained manner.

Abstract

Genital warts (condyloma acuminatum) are the clinical manifestations of the Human papillomavirus (HPV) type 6 and 11. HPV is the most common sexually transmitted infection in the United States and genital warts are sexually acquired low-risk strains of HPV. Although genital warts are not a life-threatening condition, they can be a cause of morbidity and psychosocial distress for patients and their sexual partners. Since genital warts are common in clinical practice with men predominantly presenting to the dermatology clinic, providers are given an important window for treatment, compassionate education with the possibility of vaccination discussion. This article will provide comprehensive guidance and a patient question/answer template to better assist these visits in order to facilitate broader conversations around HPV and destigmatize genital warts.

Abstract

Flagellin is a potent trigger of innate immune responses that enhance adaptive immune responses. Flagellin has intrinsic adjuvant activity mediated through toll-like receptor (TLR 5) and is an attractive candidate for highly effective vaccine adjuvant. The N-terminal D0-D1 domain of flagellin is required for TLR5 recognition. In the present study, fliC gene from S. Dublin expressed in E. coli BL21 in the fusion form with SUMO protein. The 48 kDa fusion protein of SUMO-flagellin was synthesised in insoluble inclusion body. The overall yield of expressed SUMO - flagellin was 0.6 g/L. The recombinant protein solubilized in 2 M urea then was purified by using Ni-NTA column chromatography with purity about 95.4%. Flagellin will be cleaved from fusion protein and used to develop as a radiation countermeasure.

Abstract This study investigated Vietnamese people’s behavior and future intention to purchase medicines and functional foods online and their associated factors. From March to May 2023, a Google Form questionnaire was distributed via social networks and online platforms. Convenience and snowballing sampling methods were employed to recruit 1,305 Vietnamese people. In the past year, 50.3% of participants purchased at least one kind of medicine and/or functional foods online (medicines: 27.6%, functional foods: 45.1%). Among 656 buyers, nearly a third bought these products more than three times and only 5.9% felt dissatisfied with their previous experiences. Abstract

BACKGROUND Alopecia areata (AA) is associated with negative impacts on quality of life (QoL). Data is lacking on this impact for Canadian patients and their caregivers. OBJECTIVE To investigate the burden of AA on Canadian patients and their caregivers. METHODS Four online surveys were created for patients 5-11 years old, 12-17 years old, ≥18 years old, and for caregivers of children ( RESULTS One-hundred and fifteen adult patients (97% female), 14 pediatric patients (93% female) and 15 caregivers completed the surveys online. The majority (95%) of patients felt uncomfortable or self-conscious about their appearance. Camouflaging hair loss with hats, scarves, and hair pieces was a common practice for 78.6% of pediatric and 74% of adult patients. Avoidance of social situations was reported by 61.5% of pediatric and 68.2% of adult patients. Constant worry about losing achieved hair growth was a concern for 61.5% of pediatric and 68.2% of adult patients. On a scale of 1-5, the mean score of caregivers’ own feelings of sadness or depression about their child’s AA was 4.0 (SD 0.9), and their feelings of guilt or helplessness was 4.2 (SD 1.2). The impact on QoL was moderate for both children and adults. Based on the Adjustment Disorder New Module, 62% of patients were at high risk of an adjustment disorder. Abnormal anxiety scores were recorded in 35% of patients compared to abnormal depression scores in 17%. CONCLUSIONS This study confirmed significant burden of AA on Canadian patients’ and caregivers’ QoL.

Abstract

Abstract Objective To investigate Vietnamese people’s knowledge, attitudes, and experience in purchasing medicines and functional foods online. Methods Via an online survey, the data of 1,070 participants were collected, including their general characteristics, Internet use, previous experience, knowledge, and attitudes towards purchasing medicines/functional foods online. Factors associated with their knowledge and attitudes were identified via multivariate linear regression models. Results During 2022–2023, about 97.2% of participants used the Internet to seek health information (self-diagnosis: 65.0%, self-medication: 72.6%). Roughly 52.8% bought medicines and/or functional foods online. Among 565 buyers, 41.8% felt satisfied. Only 19.9% understood that selling medicines online was illegal in Vietnam. The main benefits of purchasing medicines/functional foods online that many people agreed on included convenience (87.1%), freedom from location (84.8%), and being able to order/buy products after opening hours (84.7%). Many people felt worried about the ability to buy counterfeit or substandard products (87.7%), inaccurate product information (85.0%), the lack of supervision of the authorities (83.7%), and increasing risks of drug abuse, self-medication, and treatment non-adherence (82.5%). Roughly 84.3% found distinguishing between legal and illegal online pharmacies difficult. Participants’ average knowledge and attitude scores were 6.514 ± 2.461 (range: 0–16) and 89.330 ± 13.720 (range: 23–115), respectively. The main factors associated with people’s knowledge and attitudes towards purchasing these products online included their frequency of Internet use, seeking health information online for self-medication, feeling satisfied with previous experience, and having at least one chronic disease. Conclusions Many Vietnamese people’s knowledge about purchasing medicines/functional foods online was limited. With the increasing need for online shopping, enhancing their knowledge is paramount. In the forthcoming years, when the Ministry of Health and relevant authorities publish legal documents and enact laws involving online pharmacies and trading medicines on the Internet, ways to recognize licensed online pharmacies must be widely propagated and disseminated in the community.

Abstract

A powerful carbon-based solid acid catalyst and furfural were obtained from rice straw (RS) biomass resource. The acid catalyst was prepared through the carbonization and sulfonation of RS. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, N2 adsorption-desorption, and ammonia temperature-programmed desorption (NH3-TPD) were used to characterize the catalysts. The effect of sulfonation time (4 h to 16 h) on the structure and acidity of the catalysts was elucidated. After 16 h of sulfonation, the BET surface area and the total acidity of the catalyst reached 415 m2/g and 7.48 mmol/g, respectively. Moreover, strong acid sites accounted for more than 63% of acidity. The catalyst was then used for the conversion of RS into furfural in water. The influence of reaction temperature and time while using the catalyst on the conversion process was also investigated. The catalyst exhibited high activity in the conversion of RS, with a furfural yield of 68.3 g/kg RS at 160 °C in 5 h.
