Search

Radio jets are present in a diverse sample of AGN. However, the mechanisms of jet powering are not fully understood, and it is yet unclear to what extent they obey mass-invariant scaling relations, similar to those found for the triggering and fuelling of X-ray selected AGN. We study the incidence of eROSITA/eFEDS X-ray and LOFAR radio AGN as a function of several stellar mass normalised AGN power indicators. A new sample of radio AGN from the LOFAR-eFEDS survey is defined and we publicly release this catalogue, including host galaxy counterparts from the Legacy Survey DR9, LOFAR radio morphologies and host galaxy properties from the complete, spectroscopic (z<0.4) GAMA09 survey. The fraction of GAMA09 galaxies hosting radio, X-ray and both radio and X-ray AGN are calculated as a function of the specific black hole kinetic ($\lambda_{\rm Jet}$) and radiative ($\lambda_{\rm Edd}$) power. The incidence of eFEDS X-ray AGN as a function of $\lambda_{\rm Edd}$ shows the same mass-invariance as found in past studies. Meanwhile, radio AGN, regardless of their morphology, are more likely to be hosted in more massive galaxies, at all $\lambda_{\rm Jet}$. Across the stellar mass range, the compact radio AGN incidence follows the same power-law distribution, showing that it is not only high mass galaxies that host high power radio AGN and vice versa. On the other hand, the incidence of compact and complex radio AGN is boosted at the highest jet powers, diverging from a simple power-law. Interestingly, this increased incidence cannot be explained by more powerful radio AGN lying in more dense environments which could naturally boost their radio luminosity. Overall, we show that statistical incidence studies are a powerful method to probe disk-jet coupling for different AGN accretion modes, although future work on a more reliable determination of jet power for diverse samples of radio AGN is needed., Comment: 30 pages, 32 figures, accepted for publication in A&A

The extended ROentgen Survey with an Imaging Telescope Array (eROSITA) on board the Spectrum-Roentgen-Gamma (SRG) mission with its first All-Sky Survey (eRASS1) has offered an unprecedented, comprehensive view of the variable X-ray sky. With enhanced sensitivity, broader energy coverage, and improved resolution compared to prior surveys, the eRASS1 Data Release 1 (DR1) catalogue underwent a variability analysis, focusing on a substantial subset of 128,669 sources. We performed multiple variability tests, utilizing conventional normalized excess variance, maximum amplitude variability, and Bayesian excess variance methods. Among the 128,669 DR1 sources, our research identified 557 objects exhibiting variability through NEV and AMPLMAX tests. After applying suitable thresholds, 108 sources demonstrated significant variability via NEV, while 73 did so through AMPLMAX. The utilization of the bexvar method extended our detection capabilities to lower count rates, unveiling a total of 1307 sources manifesting variability. Furthermore, our comparative analysis spanning 2.5 years encompassed observations from consecutive eROSITA surveys, eRASS2, eRASS3, eRASS4, and eRASS5. Notably, the Gamma-ray burst afterglow GRB 200120A, which was the most variable DR1 source, was as expected absent in subsequent eROSITA survey scans. Observations of the Low-Mass X-ray Binary GX 339-4 across various eROSITA survey scans unveiled substantial variability. These outbursts involve the movement of the inner radius of the accretion disk, fluctuating inward and outward. Combining eROSITA and MAXI data reveals that the most effective tracer for monitoring the onset of the outbursts is the softest eROSITA band. Magnetically active stars are commonly found among the more variable X-ray sources. The eROSITA telescope array aboard the Spektrum Roentgen Gamma (SRG) satellite began surveying the sky in December 2019, with the aim of producing all-sky X-ray source lists and sky maps of an unprecedented depth. Here we present catalogues of both point-like and extended sources using the data acquired in the first six months of survey operations (eRASS1; completed June 2020) over the half sky whose proprietary data rights lie with the German eROSITA Consortium. We describe the observation process, the data analysis pipelines, and the characteristics of the X-ray sources. With nearly 930000 entries detected in the most sensitive 0.2-2.3 keV energy range, the eRASS1 main catalogue presented here increases the number of known X-ray sources in the published literature by more than 60%, and provides a comprehensive inventory of all classes of X-ray celestial objects, covering a wide range of physical processes. A smaller catalogue of 5466 sources detected in the less sensitive but harder 2.3-5 keV band is the result of the first true imaging survey of the entire sky above 2 keV. We show that the number counts of X-ray sources in eRASS1 are consistent with those derived over narrower fields by past X-ray surveys of a similar depth, and we explore the number counts variation as a function of the location in the sky. Adopting a uniform all-sky flux limit (at 50% completeness) of F_{0.5-2 keV} > 5 \times 10^{-14}$ erg\,s$^{-1}$\,cm$^{-2}$, we estimate that the eROSITA all-sky survey resolves into individual sources about 20% of the cosmic X-ray background in the 1-2 keV range. The catalogues presented here form part of the first data release (DR1) of the SRG/eROSITA all-sky survey. Beyond the X-ray catalogues, DR1 contains all detected and calibrated event files, source products (light curves and spectra), and all-sky maps. It has been argued that recycled gas from stellar mass loss in galaxies might serve as an important fuelling source for black holes (BHs) in their centers. Utilizing spectroscopic samples of galaxies from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) at $z = 0-0.35$ and the Large Early Galaxy Astrophysics Census (LEGA-C) survey at $z = 0.6-1$ that have X-ray coverage from XMM-Newton or Chandra, we test this stellar mass loss fuelling scenario by investigating how AGN activity and BH growth vary with the break strength at 4000 $\r{A}$, $\rm D_{n}4000$ (which is closely related to the age of stellar populations), as younger galaxies are considered to have higher stellar mass loss rates. We found that when controlling for host-galaxy properties, the fraction of log $L_{\rm X}$/$M_\star$ > 32 (which roughly corresponds to Eddington ratios $\gtrsim 1$%) AGN and sample-averaged black hole accretion rate ($\rm \overline{BHAR}$) decrease with $\rm D_{n}4000$ among $\rm D_{n}4000$ $\lesssim$ 1.9 galaxies, suggesting a higher level of AGN activity among younger galaxies, which supports the stellar mass loss fuelling scenario. For the oldest and most massive galaxies at $z = 0-0.35$, this decreasing trend is not present anymore. We found that, among these most massive galaxies at low redshift, the fraction of low specific-accretion-rate (31 $<$ log $L_{\rm X}$/$M_\star$ $<$ 32) AGNs increases with $\rm D_{n}4000$, which may be associated with additional fuelling from hot halo gas and/or enhanced accretion capability., Comment: 24 pages, 28 figures. In this work, we study the relation of cosmic environment and morphology with the star-formation (SF) and the stellar population of galaxies. Most importantly, we examine if this relation differs for systems with active and non-active supermassive black holes. For that purpose, we use 551 X-ray detected active galactic nuclei (AGN) and 16,917 non-AGN galaxies in the COSMOS-Legacy survey, for which the surface-density field measurements are available. The sources lie at redshift of $\rm 0.343$) and non-AGN galaxies have similar SFR. We, also, examine the stellar populations and the morphology of the sources in different cosmic fields. For the same morphological type, non-AGN galaxies tend to have older stellar populations and are less likely to have undergone a recent burst in denser environments compared to their field counterparts. The differences in the stellar populations with the density field are, mainly, driven by quiescent systems. Moreover, low L$_X$ AGN present negligible variations of their stellar populations, in all cosmic environments, whereas moderate L$_X$ AGN have, on average, younger stellar populations and are more likely to have undergone a recent burst, in high density fields. Finally, in the case of non-AGN galaxies, the fraction of bulge-dominated (BD) systems increases with the density field, while BD AGN are scarce in denser environments. We use AGN with $\rm L_{X} \sim 10^{42.5-44}\,erg\,s^{-1}$, from the COSMOS-Legacy survey that lie within the UltraVISTA region and cross match them with the LEGA-C catalogue. The latter provides measurements of the calcium break, D$_n$4000, and H$_\delta$ Balmer line that allow us to study the stellar populations of AGN and compare them with a galaxy reference catalogue. Our samples consist of 69 AGN and 2176 non-AGN systems, within $\rm 0.6

We present the first near-IR spectroscopy and joint analyses of multi-wavelength observations for SDSS J082747.14+425241.1, a dust-reddened, weak broad emission-line quasar (WLQ) undergoing a remarkable broad absorption line (BAL) transformation. The systemic redshift is more precisely measured to be $z=2.070\pm0.001$ using H$\beta$ compared to $z=2.040\pm0.003$ using \mgii\ from the literature, signifying an extreme \mgii\ blueshift of $2140\pm530$ \kms\ relative to H$\beta$. Using the H$\beta$-based single-epoch scaling relation with a systematic uncertainty of 0.3 dex, its black hole (BH) mass and Eddington ratio are estimated to be $M_{\rm BH}\sim6.1\times10^8M_\odot$ and $\lambda_{\rm Edd}\sim0.71$, indicative of being in a rapidly accreting phase. Our investigations confirm the WLQ nature and the LoBAL$\rightarrow$HiBAL transformation, along with a factor of 2 increase in the \mgii+\feii\ emission strength and a decrease of 0.1 in $E(B-V)$ over two decades. The kinetic power of this LoBAL wind at $R\sim$15 pc from its BH is estimated to be $\sim$43\% of the Eddington luminosity, sufficient for quasar feedback upon its host galaxy albeit with an order-of-magnitude uncertainty. This quasar provides a clear example of the long-sought scenario where LoBAL quasars are surrounded by dust cocoons, and wide-angle nuclear winds play a key role in the transition for red quasars evolving into the commonly seen blue quasars., Comment: 11 pages, 6 figures, accepted for publication in ApJ

We present deeper Chandra observations for weak-line quasars (WLQs) in a representative sample that previously had limited X-ray constraints, and perform X-ray photometric analyses to reveal the full range of X-ray properties of WLQs. Only 5 of the 32 WLQs included in this representative sample remain X-ray undetected after these observations, and a stacking analysis shows that these 5 have an average X-ray weakness factor of > 85. One of the WLQs in the sample that was known to have extreme X-ray variability, SDSS J1539+3954, exhibited dramatic X-ray variability again: it changed from an X-ray normal state to an X-ray weak state within ~ 3 months in the rest frame. This short timescale for an X-ray flux variation by a factor of $\gtrsim$ 9 further supports the thick disk and outflow (TDO) model proposed to explain the X-ray and multiwavelength properties of WLQs. The overall distribution of the X-ray-to-optical properties of WLQs suggests that the TDO has an average covering factor of the X-ray emitting region of ~ 0.5, and the column density of the TDO can range from $N_{\rm H}$ $\sim 10^{23-24}~{\rm cm}^{-2}$ to $N_{\rm H}$ $\gtrsim 10^{24}~{\rm cm}^{-2}$, which leads to different levels of absorption and Compton reflection (and/or scattering) among WLQs., Comment: 16 pages, 10 figures. We present the X-ray point-source catalogs in two of the XMM-Spitzer Extragalactic Representative Volume Survey (XMM-SERVS) fields, W-CDF-S (4.6 deg$^2$) and ELAIS-S1 (3.2 deg$^2$), aiming to fill the gap between deep pencil-beam X-ray surveys and shallow X-ray surveys over large areas. The W-CDF-S and ELAIS-S1 regions were targeted with 2.3 Ms and 1.0 Ms of XMM-Newton observations, respectively; 1.8 Ms and 0.9 Ms exposures remain after flare filtering. The survey in W-CDF-S has a flux limit of 1.0 $\times$ 10$^{-14}$ erg cm$^{-2}$ s$^{-1}$ over 90% of its area in the 0.5-10 keV band; 4053 sources are detected in total. The survey in ELAIS-S1 has a flux limit of 1.3 $\times$ 10$^{-14}$ erg cm$^{-2}$ s$^{-1}$ over 90% of its area in the 0.5-10 keV band; 2630 sources are detected in total. Reliable optical-to-IR multiwavelength counterpart candidates are identified for $\approx$ 89% of the sources in W-CDF-S and $\approx$ 87% of the sources in ELAIS-S1. 3186 sources in W-CDF-S and 1985 sources in ELAIS-S1 are classified as AGNs. We also provide photometric redshifts for X-ray sources; $\approx$ 84% of the 3319/2001 sources in W-CDF-S/ELAIS-S1 with optical-to-NIR forced photometry available have either spectroscopic redshifts or high-quality photometric redshifts. The completion of the XMM-Newton observations in the W-CDF-S and ELAIS-S1 fields marks the end of the XMM-SERVS survey data gathering. We present a systematic X-ray and multiwavelength study of a sample of 47 active galactic nuclei (AGNs) with reverberation-mapping measurements. This sample includes 21 super-Eddington accreting AGNs and 26 sub-Eddington accreting AGNs. Using high-state observations with simultaneous X-ray and UV/optical measurements, we investigate whether super-Eddington accreting AGNs exhibit different accretion disk-corona connections compared to sub-Eddington accreting AGNs. We find tight correlations between the X-ray-to-UV/optical spectral slope parameter ($\alpha_{\rm OX}$) and the monochromatic luminosity at $2500~\r{A}$ ($L_{\rm 2500~\r{A}}$) for both the super- and sub-Eddington subsamples. The best-fit $\alpha_{\rm OX}-L_{\rm 2500~\r{A}}$ relations are consistent overall, indicating that super-Eddington accreting AGNs are not particularly X-ray weak in general compared to sub-Eddington accreting AGNs. We find dependences of $\alpha_{\rm OX}$ on both the Eddington ratio ($L_{\rm Bol}/L_{\rm Edd}$) and black hole mass ($M_{\rm BH}$) parameters for our full sample. A multi-variate linear regression analysis yields $\alpha_{\rm OX}=-0.13 {\rm log}(L_{\rm Bol}/L_{\rm Edd})-0.10 {\rm log}M_{\rm BH}-0.69$, with a scatter similar to that of the $\alpha_{\rm OX}-L_{\rm 2500~\r{A}}$ relation. The hard (rest-frame $>2\rm ~keV$) X-ray photon index ($\Gamma$) is strongly correlated with $L_{\rm Bol}/L_{\rm Edd}$ for the full sample and the super-Eddington subsample, but these two parameters are not significantly correlated for the sub-Eddington subsample. A fraction of super-Eddington accreting AGNs show strong X-ray variability, probably due to small-scale gas absorption, and we highlight the importance of employing high-state (intrinsic) X-ray radiation to study the accretion disk-corona connections in AGNs., Comment: 31 pages, 11 figures, accepted for publication in ApJ

We investigate systematically the X-ray emission from type 1 quasars using a sample of 1825 Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) non-broad absorption line (non-BAL) quasars with Chandra archival observations. A significant correlation is found between the X-ray-to-optical power-law slope parameter ($\alpha_{\rm OX}$) and the 2500 $\r{A}$ monochromatic luminosity ($L_{\rm 2500~\r{A}}$), and the X-ray weakness of a quasar is assessed via the deviation of its $\alpha_{\rm OX}$ value from that expected from this relation. We demonstrate the existence of a population of non-BAL X-ray weak quasars, and the fractions of quasars that are X-ray weak by factors of $\ge6$ and $\ge10$ are $5.8\pm0.7\%$ and $2.7\pm0.5\%$, respectively. We classify the X-ray weak quasars (X-ray weak by factors of $\ge6$) into three categories based on their optical spectral features: weak emission-line quasars (WLQs; CIV REW $<16~\r{A}$), red quasars ($\Delta(g-i)>0.2$), and unclassified X-ray weak quasars. The X-ray weak fraction of $35_{- 9}^{+12}\%$ within the WLQ population is significantly higher than that within non-WLQs, confirming previous findings that WLQs represent one population of X-ray weak quasars. The X-ray weak fraction of $13_{- 3}^{+ 5}\%$ within the red quasar population is also considerably higher than that within the normal quasar population. Recent studies show that a universal relation between black-hole (BH) growth and stellar mass ($M_\bigstar$) or star formation rate (SFR) is an oversimplification of BH-galaxy co-evolution, and that morphological and structural properties of host galaxies must also be considered. Particularly, a possible connection between BH growth and host-galaxy compactness was identified among star-forming (SF) galaxies. Utilizing $\approx 6300$ massive galaxies with $I_{\rm 814W}~<~24$ at $z$ $<$ 1.2 in the COSMOS field, we perform systematic partial-correlation analyses to investigate how sample-averaged BH accretion rate ($\rm \overline{BHAR}$) depends on host-galaxy compactness among SF galaxies, when controlling for morphology and $M_\bigstar$ (or SFR). The projected central surface-mass density within 1 kpc, $\Sigma_{1}$, is utilized to represent host-galaxy compactness in our study. We find that the $\rm \overline{BHAR}$-$\Sigma_{1}$ relation is stronger than either the $\rm \overline{BHAR}$-$M_\bigstar$ or $\rm \overline{BHAR}$-SFR relation among SF galaxies, and this $\rm \overline{BHAR}$-$\Sigma_{1}$ relation applies to both bulge-dominated galaxies and galaxies that are not dominated by bulges. This $\rm \overline{BHAR}$-$\Sigma_{1}$ relation among SF galaxies suggests a link between BH growth and the central gas density of host galaxies on the kpc scale, which may further imply a common origin of the gas in the vicinity of the BH and in the central $\sim$ kpc of the galaxy. This $\rm \overline{BHAR}$-$\Sigma_{1}$ relation can also be interpreted as the relation between BH growth and the central velocity dispersion of host galaxies at a given gas content, indicating the role of the host-galaxy potential well in regulating accretion onto the BH., Comment: 21 pages, 21 figures. We present Chandra observations of 2106 radio-quiet quasars in the redshift range 1.799.99% level) between $\alpha_{ox}$ and these emission-line parameters, as well as between $\Delta\alpha_{ox}$ and CIV EW. Slight correlations are found between $\Delta\alpha_{ox}$ and CIV blueshift, MgII EW, and the CIV EW to MgII EW ratio. The best-fit trend in each parameter space is used to compare the X-ray weakness ($\Delta\alpha_{ox}$) and optical/UV emission properties of typical quasars and weak-line quasars (WLQs). The WLQs typically exhibit weaker X-ray emission than predicted by the typical quasar relationships. The best-fit relationships for our typical quasars are consistent with predictions from the disk-wind quasar model. The behavior of the WLQs compared to our typical quasars can be explained by an X-ray "shielding" model., Comment: 24 pages, 16 Figures

Possible connections between central black-hole (BH) growth and host-galaxy compactness have been found observationally, which may provide insight into BH-galaxy coevolution: compact galaxies might have large amounts of gas in their centers due to their high mass-to-size ratios, and simulations predict that high central gas density can boost BH accretion. However, it is not yet clear if BH growth is fundamentally related to the compactness of the host galaxy, due to observational degeneracies between compactness, stellar mass ($M_\bigstar$), and star formation rate (SFR). To break these degeneracies, we carry out systematic partial-correlation studies to investigate the dependence of sample-averaged BH accretion rate ($\rm \overline{BHAR}$) on the compactness of host galaxies, represented by the surface-mass density, $\Sigma_\rm e$, or the projected central surface-mass density within 1 kpc, $\Sigma_1$. We utilize 8842 galaxies with H < 24.5 in the five CANDELS fields at z = 0.5-3. We find that $\rm \overline{BHAR}$ does not significantly depend on compactness when controlling for SFR or $M_\bigstar$ among bulge-dominated galaxies and galaxies that are not dominated by bulges, respectively. However, when testing is confined to star-forming galaxies at z = 0.5-1.5, we find that the $\rm \overline{BHAR}$-$\Sigma_1$ relation is not simply a secondary manifestation of a primary $\rm \overline{BHAR}$-$M_\bigstar$ relation, which may indicate a link between BH growth and the gas density within the central 1 kpc of galaxies., Comment: 21 pages, 20 figures. Observations in the local universe show a tight correlation between the masses of supermassive black holes (SMBHs; $M_{\rm BH}$) and host-galaxy bulges ($M_{\rm bulge}$), suggesting a strong connection between SMBH and bulge growth. However, direct evidence for such a connection in the distant universe remains elusive. We have studied sample-averaged SMBH accretion rate ($\overline{\rm BHAR}$) for bulge-dominated galaxies at $z=0.5-3$. While previous observations found $\overline{\rm BHAR}$ is strongly related to host-galaxy stellar mass ($M_\star$) for the overall galaxy population, our analyses show that, for the bulge-dominated population, $\overline{\rm BHAR}$ is mainly related to SFR rather than $M_\star$. This ${\overline{\rm BHAR}}$-SFR relation is highly significant, e.g. $9.0\sigma$ (Pearson statistic) at $z=0.5-1.5$. Such a $\overline{\rm BHAR}$-SFR connection does not exist among our comparison sample of galaxies that are not bulge-dominated, for which $M_\star$ appears to be the main determinant of SMBH accretion. This difference between the bulge-dominated and comparison samples indicates that SMBHs only coevolve with bulges rather than the entire galaxies, explaining the tightness of the local $M_{\rm BH}$-$M_{\rm bulge}$ correlation. Our best-fit $\overline{\rm BHAR}$-SFR relation for the bulge-dominated sample is $\log\overline{\rm BHAR} = \log\mathrm{SFR} - (2.48\pm0.05)$ (solar units). The best-fit $\overline{\rm BHAR}/\mathrm{SFR}$ ratio ($10^{-2.48}$) for bulge-dominated galaxies is similar to the observed $M_{\rm BH}/M_{\rm bulge}$ values in the local universe. Our results reveal that SMBH and bulge growth are in lockstep, and thus non-causal scenarios of merger averaging are unlikely the origin of the $M_{\rm BH}$-$M_{\rm bulge}$ correlation. The Wide Chandra Deep Field-South (W-CDF-S) field is one of the SERVS fields with extensive multiwavelength datasets, which can provide insights into the nature and properties of objects in this field. However, the public optical data from DES ($grizy$ to $m\rm_{AB} \approx 21.4-24.3$) are not sufficiently deep to match well the NIR data from VIDEO ($ZYJHK_s$ to $m\rm_{AB} \approx 23.5-25.7$), which limits the investigation of fainter objects at higher redshifts. Here, we present an optical catalog of $\approx$ 2,000,000 objects in W-CDF-S utilizing archival Hyper Suprime-Cam observations in the $g,r,i,z$ bands covering $\approx5.7 \rm~deg^2$. We report the discovery of disappearance of Mg ii, Al iii, C iv, and Si iv broad absorption lines (BALs) at the same velocity, accompanied by a new Civ BAL emerging at a higher velocity, in the quasar J0827+4252 at z = 2.038. This is the first report of BAL disappearance (i) over Mg ii, Al iii, C iv, and Si iv ions and (ii) in a weak emission-line quasar (WLQ). The discovery is based on four spectra from the SDSS and one follow-up spectrum from HET/LRS2. The simultaneous Civ BAL disappearance and emergence at different velocities, together with no variations in the CRTS light curve, indicate that ionization changes in the absorbing material are unlikely to cause the observed BAL variability. Our analyses reveal that transverse motion is the most likely dominant driver of the BAL disappearance/emergence.
