1. Engaging with immigrant students’ voices in the school environment: an analysis of policy documents through school websites

Abstract

Abstract Background For students to feel happy and supported in school, it is important that their views are taken seriously and integrated into school policies. However, limited information is available how the voices of immigrant students are considered in European school contexts. This study generated evidence from written documents to ascertain how student voice practices are described at school websites. Methods Between 2 March and 8 April 2021, we reviewed the policy documents publicly available on school websites. The schools located in areas of high immigration in six European countries: Austria, England, Finland, Germany, Romania, and Switzerland. The READ approach was used to guide the steps in the document analysis in the context of policy studies (1) ready the materials, 2) data extraction, 3) data analysis, 4) distil the findings). A combination of qualitative and quantitative approaches with descriptive statistics (n, %, Mean, SD, range) was used for analysis. Results A total of 412 documents (305 schools) were extracted. Based on reviewing school websites, reviewers’strongly agreed’ in seven documents (2%) that information related to seeking student voices could be easily found. On the contrary, in 247 documents (60%), reviewers strongly indicated that information related to seeking student voices was missing. No clear characteristics could be specified to identify those schools were hearing students’ voices is well documented. The most common documents including statements related to student voice were anti-bullying or violence prevention strategies (75/412) and mission statements (72/412). Conclusions Our document analysis based on publicly accessible school websites suggest that student voices are less frequently described in school written policy documents. Our findings provide a baseline to further monitor activities, not only at school level but also to any governmental and local authorities whose intention is to serve the public and openly share their values and practices with community members. A deeper understanding is further needed about how listening to student voices is realized in daily school practices.

Abstract

Purpose Despite the susceptibility to the experience of mental distress during adolescence, this population often demonstrate poor help-seeking behaviours. Efforts have been made by schools to address adolescents’ knowledge around mental health; less focus has been given to addressing their knowledge of mental health services and avenues for help-seeking. This study aimed to explore adolescents’ views of mental health services education. Methods An interpretive descriptive design was adopted. Thirty adolescents from Ireland participated in individual interviews. Data were analysed using content analysis. Two themes were identified Recognizing Gaps in Knowledge about Mental Health Service Education, and Enhancing Mental Health Service Education for Young People. Participants reported gaps in their knowledge about mental health services and were uncertain how to access help. Current strategies (e.g., print media) were considered tokenistic and ineffective; instead, multimedia (film/TV) approaches were recommended. Participants reported gaps in their knowledge about mental healthservices and were uncertain how to access help. Conclusions Current mental health education programmes need to expand their focus beyond social/emotional well-being, providing adolescents with the knowledge they need to access appropriate supports. Considering traditional print media was viewed as ineffective, while film/TV had an influence on perceptions of mental health services, a multimedia approach to education may be an effective way of engaging this population.

3. Exploring School Bullying: Designing the Research Question with Young Co-Researchers

Abstract

Participatory Action Research (PAR) empowers young people to work alongside adult researchers to determine the purpose/scope of research projects. By naming the purpose of the research, young people have the potential to transform it. Beginning with a broad question, we worked in collaboration with secondary school students (co-researchers) and staff to decide on the focal research question. Prior to recruiting the co-researchers, we conducted an ‘exploration study’ using a qualitative online questionnaire distributed to the wider school population, to ascertain the core bullying issues. Although the questionnaire highlighted complexities in recognising bullying, misogynistic behaviour was stressed as a particular concern. In-depth discussions with the co-researchers and reflections on the questionnaire findings over several months gave us further insight into this issue, as well as the complexities of determining bullying/banter. Our research question was determined as: “Does gender bullying happen at this school?” Two distinct methodological and process-related insights arose from this work: power dynamics and the construct of time as duration and a non-linear process. This paper contributes to the literature on hearing stakeholder views as well as on actively including students in designing and developing research foundations, that is the research question, an under-explored topic in the wider literature.

4. Understanding Alternative Bullying Perspectives Through Research Engagement With Young People

Abstract

Bullying research has traditionally been dominated by largescale cohort studies focusing on the personality traits of bullies and victims. These studies focus on bullying prevalence, risk and protective factors, and negative outcomes. A limitation of this approach is that it does not explain why bullying happens. Qualitative research can help shed light on these factors. This paper discusses the findings from four mainly qualitative research projects including a systematic review and three empirical studies involving young people to various degrees within the research process as respondents, co-researchers and commissioners of research. Much quantitative research suggests that young people are a homogenous group and through the use of surveys and other large scale methods, generalizations can be drawn about how bullying is understood and how it can be dealt with. Findings from the studies presented in this paper, add to our understanding that young people appear particularly concerned about the role of wider contextual and relational factors in deciding if bullying has happened. These studies underscore the relational aspects of definitions of bullying and, how the dynamics of young people’s friendships can shift what is understood as bullying or not. Moreover, to appreciate the relational and social contexts underpinning bullying behaviors, adults and young people need to work together on bullying agendas and engage with multiple definitions, effects and forms of support. Qualitative methodologies, in particular participatory research opens up the complexities of young lives and enables these insights to come to the fore. Through this approach, effective supports can be designed based on what young people want and need rather than those interpreted as supportive through adult understanding.

5. Single cell RNA sequencing in isogenicFUSandTARDBPmutant ALS lines reveals early mitochondrial dysfunction as a common pathway in motor neurons

Abstract

Mutations in the RNA/DNA-binding proteins FUS and TDP-43 cause amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) with distinct neuropathological features. It is currently unclear how these gene mutations lead to selective motor neuron death and if there are common mechanisms across disease causations. Using single cell RNA sequencing of neurons derived from isogenic induced pluripotent stem cell lines, we demonstrate that motor neurons harbouring FUS P525L or FUS R495X mutations show a 4.9- to 15.5-fold larger transcriptional response than interneurons. About 20% of transcripts were coregulated across FUS mutations in motor neurons and about half of these were caused by FUS gain-of-function. Comparison with TDP-43 M337V motor neurons, identified common mitochondrial dysfunction across gene mutations. Metabolic assessment confirmed a decrease in mitochondrial respiration and ATP turnover in mutantFUSandTARDBPmotor neurons and live cell microscopy revealed impaired mitochondrial motility across ALS motor axons. Thus, we have identified early mitochondrial dysfunction in motor neurons shared across ALS-causative mutations, that could have major implications for their survival and which could be targeted therapeutically.

6. Participatory Research with Care Leavers to Explore their Support Experiences During the COVID-19 Pandemic

Abstract

The COVID-19 pandemic has perpetuated the challenges faced by care leavers and increased the need for support. Online participatory research was conducted to explore care leavers’ support experiences during the pandemic. A research team of twenty-five care leavers aged sixteen to twenty-five years and support workers from six local authorities across England identified priorities and developed an online questionnaire that was completed by ninety-four care leavers aged seventeen to twenty-six years. The research team also participated in focus groups, reflected on findings and agreed recommendations. The findings focused on four overarching themes: finances and practical issues, mental health, social connection, and support from services. The recommendations suggest that corporate parent services should provide information, offer equal opportunity to access support, facilitate connection for care leavers, and proactively reach out and ensure someone is always there for them. So that support is responsive to their needs, the continued participation of care leavers in decisions that affect them is paramount, along with commitment by the government and corporate parent services to listen and take action. By using a participatory approach that involved care leavers in the research process, this research promotes their voices and strengthens the evidence for enhancing care leaver support during the pandemic and beyond.

9. Working with Adolescents to Understand Bullying and Self–Exclusion from School

Abstract

Self-exclusion from school is a significant issue in the UK and increasingly associated with bullying. However, there is little research into this relationship and the experiences and support needs of adolescents who experience bullying leading to self-exclusion are unknown. Using participatory methodology, we worked with adolescents who had self-excluded from school and the staff supporting them, to identify key issues on experiences and support needs and design the research approach which was carried into a second phase of research involving four focus group discussions with other self-excluded adolescents. Fifteen adolescents were involved in total (11 female, 4 male, aged 13– 16). Data was analysed thematically and findings suggest anxiety underpins self-exclusion due to bullying, which was shaped by friendship dynamics, issues around seeking support, and institutional factors in schools. This led to gradual withdrawal from school, and eventually self-exclusion. These shared experiences, knowledge, and insight go beyond the current literature, thus providing a strong rationale for involving adolescents in future research.

Abstract

R01MH116269 and R01MH121455 [to DMR]), NIGMS of the National Institutes of Health (Grant No. T32GM007347 [to JK]), and the Brain & Behavior Research Foundation (NARSAD Young Investigator Award No. 29551 [to NM])., BACKGROUND: Suicide is a leading cause of death worldwide, and nonfatal suicide attempts, which occur far more frequently, are a major source of disability and social and economic burden. Both have substantial genetic etiology, which is partially shared and partially distinct from that of related psychiatric disorders. METHODS: We conducted a genome-wide association study (GWAS) of 29,782 suicide attempt (SA) cases and 519,961 controls in the International Suicide Genetics Consortium (ISGC). The GWAS of SA was conditioned on psychiatric disorders using GWAS summary statistics via multitrait-based conditional and joint analysis, to remove genetic effects on SA mediated by psychiatric disorders. We investigated the shared and divergent genetic architectures of SA, psychiatric disorders, and other known risk factors. RESULTS: Two loci reached genome-wide significance for SA: the major histocompatibility complex and an intergenic locus on chromosome 7, the latter of which remained associated with SA after conditioning on psychiatric disorders and replicated in an independent cohort from the Million Veteran Program. This locus has been implicated in risk-taking behavior, smoking, and insomnia. SA showed strong genetic correlation with psychiatric disorders, particularly major depression, and also with smoking, pain, risk-taking behavior, sleep disturbances, lower educational attainment, reproductive traits, lower socioeconomic status, and poorer general health. After conditioning on psychiatric disorders, the genetic correlations between SA and psychiatric disorders decreased, whereas those with nonpsychiatric traits remained largely unchanged. Abstract

Cells from people with Down syndrome (DS) show faster accumulation of DNA damage and epigenetic aging marks. Causative mechanisms remain un-proven and hypotheses range from amplified chromosomal instability to actions of several supernumerary chromosome 21 genes. Plasma immunoglobulin G (IgG) glycosylation profiles are established as a reliable predictor of biological and chronological aging. We performed IgG glycan profiling of n=246 individuals with DS (208 adults and 38 children) from three European populations and compared these to age-, sex- and demography-matched general populations. We uncovered very significantly increased IgG glycosylation aging marks associated with DS. Average levels of IgG glycans without galactose (G0) and those with two galactoses (G2) as a function of age in persons with DS corresponded to levels detected in 19 years older euploid individuals. Some aging marks were significant already in children with DS. Remarkably, the IgG glycan profiles of a child with segmental duplication of only 31 genes on chromosome 21 had values similar to those of age-matched DS children, outside the normal children’s range. This is the first non-epigenetic evidence of accelerated systemic biological aging in DS, suggesting it begins very early in childhood. It points to a causative contribution of the overdose of genes in a short segment of chromosome 21, not previously linked to accelerated aging, opening a route to discovery of hitherto unrecognised mechanisms.

Abstract

Bipolar disorder (BD) is a heritable mental illness with complex etiology. We performed a genome-wide association study (GWAS) of 41,917 BD cases and 371,549 controls of European ancestry, which identified 64 associated genomic loci. BD risk alleles were enriched in genes in synaptic signaling pathways and brain-expressed genes, particularly those with high specificity of expression in neurons of the prefrontal cortex and hippocampus. Significant signal enrichment was found in genes encoding targets of antipsychotics, calcium channel blockers, antiepileptics and anesthetics. Integrating eQTL data implicated 15 genes robustly linked to BD via gene expression, including druggable genes such as HTR6, MCHR1, DCLK3 and FURIN. This GWAS provides the best-powered BD polygenic scores to date, when applied in both European and diverse ancestry samples. Analyses of BD subtypes indicated high but imperfect genetic correlation between BD type I and II and identified additional associated loci. Together, these results advance our understanding of the biological etiology of BD, identify novel therapeutic leads and prioritize genes for functional follow-up studies.

Abstract

Objective: This study evaluates the impact of the State of Mind Ireland-Higher Education (SOMI-HE) Mental Fitness intervention on student wellbeing, resilience, and physical activity (PA) participation. Design: A mixed-methods research design, comprising of a self-report questionnaire, and semi-structured focus group interviews at pre, post and follow-up phases were employed. Participants were a sample of 134 higher education students (29% male: 71% female, mean age range 18 to 25 years old). The quantitative outcome measures of wellbeing, resilience and PA data were analysed using SPSS version 26.0, (IBM, Armonk, NY, USA) with appropriate statistical analysis. Qualitative data were analysed using thematic analysis to capture the long-term outcomes and impact of the intervention. Results: The results indicate a significant intervention effect on participants’ wellbeing (t (120) = −4.27, p &lt, 0.001), PA levels (t (126) = 3.91, p &lt, 0.001) and motivational readiness for exercise change (χ2 (1, n = 131) = 6.9, p &lt, 0.009 (2–sided). Qualitative findings suggest a sustained long-term increase in PA and resilience skills for positive mental health, and reduced stigma and barriers to positive mental health. Conclusion: The findings demonstrate the effectiveness of the SOMI-HE evidence-based intervention, and beneficial outcomes of a salutary approach to higher education student mental health.

Abstract

The current study examines the wellbeing, resilience and physical activity (PA) levels among Irish pre-service teachers. Participants were a sample of 128 higher education students (29% male; 71% female; mean age range 18–27 years old) who completed a self-report questionnaire, using a combination of established instruments for wellbeing, resilience, and PA. Descriptive data revealed that 39.1% presented with low levels of resilience, and 74% were not meeting the PA guidelines for health. One sample t-tests further revealed the sample population of higher education students had lower wellbeing (t (127) = −3.05, p = .003) and resilience (t (127) = −6.48, p = .003) levels, when compared to the population normative data. Results from the existing study suggest that a structured mental health and PA education awareness intervention for Irish pre-service teachers may be warranted, specifically to increase the lower than expected levels of resilience. The existing sample of pre-service teachers are at a critical time of transition, as they move forward into a profession where self-awareness of wellbeing is required at the beginning of their careers to sustain health both inside and outside of the classroom.

Abstract

This article reports on the complex web experienced by young people when making decisions to report bullying in school. The study was conducted in the secondary school of an independent day and boarding school in the East of England. A Participatory Action Research approach was used with student voice and perspective at its core. This study involved five students as co-researchers with the first author to explore the concept of ‘snitching’ about bullying. Data were collected from the wider student group through a variety of methods including questionnaires, focus groups and interviews. The findings suggest that the process of reporting bullying is more complex than adults once thought. Students have to negotiate a complex web in firstly deciding if the bullying is serious enough to report. The concept of ‘serious’ bullying is contentious, particularly between boarders and day students, but physical abuse and/or repetition tended to be characteristic of ‘serious’ bullying. Once considered ‘serious’ enough, students have to weigh up the potential repercussions from the bully or the wider friendship group if they ‘snitch’. Students were therefore in conflict between loyalty to the bully and wider friendship group in deciding if unfairness had taken place and should be reported. Finally students needed to decide who they trusted to report the bullying to. The students in this study often reported to teachers who they perceived as supportive and authoritative.

Abstract

This chapter explores the process of evaluating the individual and collective view of participation in a Participatory Action Research (PAR) project carried out by an adult researcher and five young researchers. The PAR framework enabled a commitment to continuous information sharing, reflection and action. The process of evaluating participation on three occasions empowered the team to reflect on the reciprocal relationship that developed between the adult and the young researchers. The study acknowledges participation as fluid and dynamic. Furthermore, recognising that power can be shared between adult and young researchers, is crucial to the development of reciprocal relationships in research.

This article adds to an ongoing conversation in gerontology about the importance of training and involving older people in research. Currently, the literature rarely distinguishes between the one-off involvement of older citizens in research projects and the development of research groups led by older people that sustain over time as well as the nature of educational initiatives that support their development. This article presents a case-study based on evaluative data from the WhyNot! Older Citizens’ Research Group that has been running independently for nearly eight years. Abstract

This paper presents key findings from a project commissioned by a group of young people to explore issues related to cyberbullying with 12–18-year olds. In particular, the paper focuses on those findings related to impact and support needs. The project collected data through a web-based Survey Monkey questionnaire and focus groups. A total of 473 young people aged 11–19 years in England responded to the questionnaire and 17 young people aged 10–18 took part in the focus groups: 19.7% (n = 87) admitted that they had been cyberbullied, just under half the young people in this study knew someone who had been cyberbullied and a similar proportion of girls and boys admitted having cyberbullied others. Most of the young people thought cyberbullying was as harmful as traditional face to face bullying. But while a few thought it could be more serious, others thought it less serious or even non-existent. Since the beginning of the 1990s there has been a drive towards involving children and young people in the development and delivery of public services in the UK. At no other time in our history has there been so much focus on enabling children and young people to participate in the lives of their communities. UK Government policies rhetorically stress that every opportunity must be taken to listen to the voices of the young and for their perspectives to be heard. At the same time, children and young people are starting to take advantage of this change in thinking and are beginning to want to be part of the decision-making processes that govern their lives (Kirby and Bryson, 2002; Stafford et al., 2003; Hill et al., 2004). The children who took part in the Children’s Summit on Corporal Punishment in Sweden in 20011 reflect what many others have said: Politicians often refer to us children as being the future of Europe. But we are living right now . . . Our childhood is happening now and not in the future. We do not think it is enough for decision-makers (for example politicians and public officials) to speak a lot about children and how important they are . . . We want them to listen to us. We want to see action! (Children’s Summit, Sweden 2001) However, though there is a growing trend in developed economies towards listening to children’s perspectives, a culture of non-participation in public life Introduction and in decision making about services is still the norm. What constitutes ‘participation’ by children is interpreted in many different ways. Often the degree to which they are encouraged or enabled to participate depends largely on the attitude of adults around them and the interpretation those adults place on the term ‘participation’. As a result, the current focus in the UK on children’s participation runs the risk of being implemented in a meaningless way or not implemented at all. If children’s ‘participation’ is to have substance, it will require those who work with children to seek to ensure children’s perspectives are taken into account when developing health and social care services. As the importance of promoting health in childhood is foregrounded, we may become more interested in finding out what children have to say about their own health. This chapter examines the case for children’s participation in service delivery and the policy drivers that underpin the current situation in the UK. Some of the barriers to participation are examined before moving on to a review of examples of children’s views about services.

Abstract

The aim of the systematic review (SR) reported in this article was to compare how UK secondary school pupils and teachers define bullying, using the analytical framework proposed by Naylor et al (2006). Findings were drawn from five major studies – two quantitative, two qualitative and one using mixed methods – and suggest that teachers are much more likely than pupils to employ broader definitions and to include indirect forms of bullying. Possible additions to Naylor et al’s framework are highlighted. The SR encompassed views from 3,283 pupils and 225 teachers, and a number of modest implications for policy and practice are identified.

Historically the voices of children in research have been silent. They are often seen as victims or beneficiaries of research rather than co‐researchers or partners. This is beginning to change with growing awareness that involving children in the design, delivery and evaluation of services can make services more accessible to them and their peers. This article reviews the processes involved in a research project commissioned by Children’s Fund, which investigated the use and non‐use of services within a local area. The involvement of children was paramount and resulted in the recruitment of nine young researchers between the ages of 7–13. Various cycles of participatory action research evolved throughout the project and this article focuses specifically on two—recruiting the researcher and training young researchers. Objective To perform a pilot study that evaluates the nutritional and dietary habits of primary school children in a socioeconomically disadvantaged area prior to and following a healthy eating intervention programme.Design A quantitative study whereby the food intakes of 20 boys and 20 girls aged 8 to 9 years old were recorded for five days prior to, and for five days after the intervention. Abstract

Recent research has confirmed the presence of auditory hallucinations in non-psychotic children, with this research also suggesting that such hallucinations may be more common than previously thought. While auditory hallucinations in children have frequently been associated with high levels of emotional stress, there is still a poor understanding of how this stress may precipitate hallucinations, and why some children experience hallucinations while others seem not to. The current study assessed the association between high levels of trauma symptomatology, anxiety and depression, and the presence of hallucinations against matched controls. Results indicated that hallucinating children had significantly higher mean anxiety, depression and, in particular, re-experiencing scores than did the children in the control group. These results were examined within the framework of reality monitoring, that is, the ability to distinguish between externally or internally generated sources of information. The notion of high levels of emotional distress decreasing the efficiency of reality monitoring and leading to the possibility of confusion between internally and externally generated stimuli was discussed, with the conclusion advanced that the misattribution of an externally generated source--either held as a memory or as a traumatic re-experiencing--as an internally generated one, underlies hallucinatory experiences.

Abstract

AIM: This paper seeks to add to the debate regarding children as researchers by exploring the reality of their participation in research. BACKGROUND: As the role children and young people play in knowledge building is recognised, their position as social agents is evolving. This has led to a shift in the ways in which children and young people participate in research, and in particular in their roles as researchers alongside adults. DATA SOURCES: Two participatory research projects involving children and young people. REVIEW METHODS: The paper critiques existing models of children's participation and is followed by an account of observations made during the research projects. DISCUSSION: Existing models offered a variety of criteria against which to measure participation. However, none of the models allowed for the multidimensional nature of participation that emerged from the data to be fully described. CONCLUSION: A dual-axis model of participation is more useful than the other models described in the text for reflecting on participatory processes. IMPLICATIONS FOR PRACTICE/RESEARCH: The model can be valuable in guide planning and implementing participatory research with children and also as a tool for evaluating the process

31. WestREN: a description of an Irish academic general practice research network

Abstract

Background Primary care research networks have been established internationally since the 1960s to enable diverse practitioners to engage in and develop research and education and implement research evidence. The newly established Western Research and Education Network (WestREN) is one such network consisting of a collaboration between the Discipline of General Practice at NUI Galway and 71 West of Ireland general practices. In September 2009 all member practices were issued with a questionnaire with two objectives: to describe the structure and characteristics of the member practices and to compare the results to the national profile of Irish general practice. Methods A postal survey was used followed by one written and one email reminder. Results A response rate of 73% (52/71) was achieved after two reminders. Half of practices were in a rural location, one quarter located in an urban setting and another quarter in a mixed location. Ninety-four per cent of general practitioners practice from purpose-built or adapted premises with under 6% of practices being attached to the general practitioner's residence. Over 96% of general practitioners use appointment systems with 58% using appointment only. All practices surveyed were computerised, with 80% describing their practices as 'fully computerised'. Almost 60% of general practitioners are coding chronic diagnoses with 20% coding individual consultations. Twenty-five per cent of general practitioners were single-handed with the majority of practices having at least two general practitioners, and a mean number of general practitioners of 2.4. Ninety-two per cent of practices employed a practice nurse with 30% employing more than one nurse. Compared to the national profile, WestREN practices appear somewhat larger, and more likely to be purpose-built and in rural areas. National trends apparent between 1982 and 1992, such as increasing computerisation and practice nurse availability, appear to be continuing. Conclusions WestREN is a new university-affiliated general practice research network in Ireland. Survey of its initial membership confirms WestREN practices to be broadly representative of the national profile and has provided us with valuable information on the current and changing structure of Irish general practice.

Abstract

The aim of this review was to collate and summarise the self-report data regarding anomalies in sensitivity to reward and punishment in eating disorders (ED) with use of a meta-analysis where possible. Electronic databases were searched to December 2008. Studies were required to have a non-eating disorder healthy control group and include at least one self-report measure of sensitivity to reward or punishment in an eating disorder population. Findings were very heterogeneous and inconsistencies between studies and measures were highlighted. In general, patients with anorexia nervosa (restricting type) were less sensitive to reward than healthy controls, whereas patients with bulimia nervosa and anorexia nervosa (binge/purge) type were more sensitive. All ED groups report higher sensitivity to punishment than healthy controls. Individuals with eating disorders differ from healthy controls in measures of reward and punishment sensitivity as measured using the Temperament and Character Inventory, Tridimensional Personality Questionnaire and BIS/BAS scales, but further work is required as there is some heterogeneity in the data. Generating more research using behavioural measures may increase understanding of the findings.

34. Combining State and Voluntary Provision: Using Volunteers in Home-Based Child Protection - Preliminary Indications for the Mental Wellbeing of Family Members

Abstract

Background: In the UK there is a policy initiative to encourage volunteering to promote community participation and engagement in society. ‘Volunteers in Child Protection’ is a scheme promoting volunteers to work alongside statutory child care workers in complex child protection cases. Trained volunteers offer practical and emotional support to families. This project evaluated the experience of the scheme from the perspective of the families, the statutory workers and the mental health outcomes for the family. Methods: This is a small scale mixed methods study of families subject to child protection procedures, who are very hard to engage in research. The study examines the impact of volunteers using standardized, repeat measures of mental wellbeing, plus semi-structured interviews with parents, volunteers and stakeholders. Results: Family experience – families value their volunteers involvement and report increased confidence in their parenting capacity. Volunteer experience – volunteers feel they are performing a worthwhile service and report improvement in the families. Mental wellbeing outcomes - on referral two thirds of the families are dysfunctional, children have emotional and behavioral disturbance and some mothers have clinical levels of depression. Repeat measures indicate improvements during the volunteer intervention. Conclusions: Volunteers can work effectively with complex families, working alongside statutory professional involvement. The volunteers are highly valued by the service users who report improved confidence in their parenting skills and improvements in their own mental wellbeing. Repeat measures support the service user’s reports of improvement in children’s emotional and behavioral wellbeing, family functioning and mother’s mental wellbeing.

Abstract

Malcolm Ramsay's article looked at the empowerment of older people through good advice and information. Continuing this theme in our next article, Carol Munn‐Giddings et al describe a unique project that has equipped older people with the necessary research skills to go after the information themselves and is giving them the confidence to directly shape local services. Providers and commissioners ‐ beware!
