School Drama Classic is a co-mentoring teacher professional learning programme developed through a partnership between Sydney Theatre Company and the University of Sydney’s School of Education and Social Work. Developed in 2009, this teacher professional learning programme aims to enable primary teachers to develop the expertise and confidence to use drama-rich pedagogy with quality children’s literature to enhance learners’ English and literacy skills. By 2021 it had reached more than 35,000 teachers and students across Australia and more recently in New Zealand. While a growing body of research has explored aspects of the School Drama programme, relatively little focus had centred on student outcomes. This article focuses on one of my doctoral research case studies (Saunders, 2019), a Year 5 class at Gungahlin Public School (pseudonym), a co-educational public school in Sydney’s inner west. A range of data collection methods was employed within this qualitative study, including teacher interview (before, during and after the intervention), student focus groups (during and after the intervention), benchmarking of student literacy (before and after the intervention) and a pre- and post-programme survey for students. Richardson’s (1997) concept of crystallisation was used to analyse the data. The findings suggested positive shifts in student English and literacy outcomes in the selected focus area (inferential comprehension) using drama-rich pedagogy with an episodic pre-text model.

Purpose: Despite advances in the treatment of chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL), the disease remains incurable with standard therapies and relapse is inevitable. A growing body of evidence indicates that alterations in the adhesion properties of neoplastic cells play a pivotal role in the development and progression of CLL.Experimental Design: The expression of 71 cell surface molecules was examined on CLL peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) over 3 weeks in culture. The most highly upregulated marker, CD62L, was examined further for expression on CD5+/CD19+ CLL cells in vitro and in lymph node and bone marrow biopsies. The prosurvival role of CD62L was examined using a functional blocking antibody and therapeutic potential evaluated by comparison with current chemotherapy agents.Results: Blocking CD62L resulted in apoptosis of CLL cells but not PBMCs from healthy donors suggesting a novel role for CD62L in CLL cell survival. The beneficial effect of coculturing CLL cells with bone marrow stromal cells or endothelial cells does not protect CLL cells from anti-CD62L–related toxicity. Moreover, combining fludarabine or mafosfamide with the anti-CD62L in vitro produced an additive effect both with and without stromal cells.Conclusion: This is the first reported data showing that blocking the activation and homing marker, CD62L, regulates CLL cell survival in vitro. These data also suggest that therapeutic antibodies against CD62L may provide additional clinical benefit to patients with CLL receiving current standard chemotherapy protocols. The E2F family of transcription factors plays a crucial role in the regulation of genes involved in cell proliferation, differentiation, and apoptosis. In keratinocytes, the inhibition of E2F is a key step in the control and initiation of squamous differentiation. Because the product of the recently identified E2F7a/E2F7b gene has been shown to repress E2F-regulated promoters, and to be abundant in skin, we examined its role in the epidermis. Our results indicate that E2F7b mRNA expression is selectively associated with proliferation-competent keratinocytes. Moreover, E2F7 was able to antagonize E2F1-induced proliferation and apoptosis. In contrast, although E2F7 was able to inhibit proliferation and initiate differentiation, it was unable to antagonize the differentiation suppression induced by E2F1. These data indicate that E2F7-mediated suppression of proliferation and apoptosis acts through E2F1-dependent pathways, whereas E2F7-induced differentiation acts through an E2F1-independent pathway. These data also suggest that proliferation, differentiation, and survival of primary human keratinocytes can be controlled by the relative ratio of E2F1 to E2F7. Because deregulated proliferation, differentiation, and apoptosis are hallmarks of cancer, we examined the expression levels of E2F1 and E2F7 in cutaneous squamous cell carcinomas (CSCC). We found that both genes were overexpressed in CSCCs compared with normal epidermis. Furthermore, inhibition of E2F7 in a SCC cell line sensitized the cells to UV-induced apoptosis and doxorubicin-induced apoptosis. Combined, these data suggest that the selected disruption of E2F1 and E2F7 in keratinocytes is likely to contribute to CSCC formation and may prove to be a viable therapeutic target. Red giant asteroseismology can provide valuable information for studying the Galaxy as demonstrated by space missions like CoRoT and Kepler. However, previous observations have been limited to small data sets and fields-of-view. The TESS mission provides far larger samples and, for the first time, the opportunity to perform asteroseimic inference from full-frame images full-sky, instead of narrow fields and pre-selected targets. Here, we seek to detect oscillations in TESS data of the red giants in the Kepler field using the 4-yr Kepler results as benchmark. Because we use 1-2 sectors of observation, our results are representative of the typical scenario from TESS data. We detect clear oscillations in ~3000 stars with another ~1000 borderline (low S/N) cases. In comparison, best-case predictions suggests ~4500 detectable oscillating giants. Of the clear detections, we measure Dnu in 570 stars, meaning a ~20% Dnu yield (14% for one sector and 26% for two sectors). These yields imply that typical (1-2 sector) TESS data will result in significant detection biases. Hence, to boost the number of stars, one might need to use only Numax as the seismic input for stellar property estimation. However, we find little bias in the seismic measurements and typical scatter is about 5-6% in Numax and 2-3% in Dnu. These values, coupled with typical uncertainties in parallax, Teff, and [Fe/H] in a grid-based approach, would provide internal uncertainties of 3% in inferred stellar radius, 6% in mass and 20% in age for low-luminosity giant stars. The frequency of cases of accelerated silicosis associated with exposure to dust from processing artificial stones is rapidly increasing globally. Artificial stones are increasingly popular materials, commonly used to fabricate kitchen and bathroom worktops. Artificial stones can contain very high levels of crystalline silica, hence cutting and polishing them without adequate exposure controls represents a significant health risk. The aim of this research was to determine any differences in the emission profiles of dust generated from artificial and natural stones when cutting and polishing. For artificial stones containing resins, the nature of the volatile organic compounds (VOCs) emitted during processing was also investigated. A selection of stones (two natural, two artificial containing resin, and one artificial sintered) were cut and polished inside a large dust tunnel to characterize the emissions produced. The inhalable, thoracic, and respirable mass concentrations of emissions were measured gravimetrically and the amount of crystalline silica in different size fractions was determined by X-ray diffraction. Emissions were viewed using scanning electron microscopy and the particle size distribution was measured using a wide range aerosol spectrometer. VOCs emitted when cutting resin-artificial stones were also sampled. The mass of dust emitted when cutting stones was higher than that emitted when polishing. For each process, the mass of dust generated was similar whether the stone was artificial or natural. The percentage of crystalline silica in bulk stone is likely to be a reasonable, or conservative, estimate of that in stone dust generated by cutting or polishing. Larger particles were produced when cutting compared with when polishing. For each process, normalized particle size distributions were similar whether the stone was artificial or natural. VOCs were released when cutting resin-artificial stones. The higher the level of silica in the bulk material, the higher the level of silica in any dust emissions produced when processing the stone. When working with new stones containing higher levels of silica, existing control measures may need to be adapted and improved in order to achieve adequate control.

NASA's TESS mission \citep{tess} has produced high precision photometry of millions of stars to the community. The majority of TESS observations have a duration of $\approx$27 days, corresponding to a single observation during a TESS sector. A small subset of TESS targets are observed for multiple sectors, with approximately 1-2\% of targets falling in the Continuous Viewing Zone (CVZ) during the prime mission \citep{yield}, where targets are observed continuously for a year. These targets are highly valuable for extracting long period rotation rates, which can be linked to stellar ages. (1) Background: Small, lightweight, low‐cost optical particulate matter (PM) monitors are becoming popular in the field of occupational exposure monitoring, because these devices allow for real‐time static measurements to be collected at multiple locations throughout a work site as well as being used as wearables providing personal exposure estimates. Prior to deployment, devices should be evaluated to optimize and quantify measurement accuracy. However, this can turn out to be difficult, as no standardized methods are yet available and different deployments may require different evaluation procedures. To gain insight in the relevance of different variables that may affect the monitor readings, six PM monitors were selected based on current availability and evaluated in the laboratory, (2) Methods: Existing strategies that were judged appropriate for the evaluation of PM monitors were reviewed and seven evaluation variables were selected, namely the type of dust, within‐ and between‐device variations, nature of the power supply, temperature, relative humidity, and exposure pattern (peak and constant). Each variable was tested and analyzed individually and, if found to affect the readings significantly, included in a final correction model specific to each monitor. Finally, the accuracy for each monitor after correction was calculated, (3) Results: The reference materials and exposure patterns were found to be main factors needing correction for most monitors. One PM monitor was found to be sufficiently accurate at concentrations up to 2000 &micro, g/m3 PM2.5, with other monitors appropriate at lower concentrations. The average accuracy increased by up to three‐fold compared to when the correction model did not include evaluation variables, (4) Conclusions: Laboratory evaluation and readings correction can greatly increase the accuracy of PM monitors and set boundaries for appropriate use. However, this requires identifying the relevant evaluation variables, which are heavily reliant on how the monitors are used in the workplace. This, together with the lack of current consensus on standardized procedures, shows the need for harmonized PM monitor evaluation methods for occupational exposure monitoring.

The vast majority of Milky Way stellar halo stars were likely accreted from a small number ($\lesssim$3) of relatively large dwarf galaxy accretion events. However, the timing of these events is poorly constrained, relying predominantly on indirect dynamical mixing arguments or imprecise age measurements of stars associated with debris structures. Here, we aim to infer robust stellar ages for stars associated with galactic substructures to more directly constrain the merger history of the Galaxy. By combining kinematic, asteroseismic, and spectroscopic data where available, we infer stellar ages for a sample of 10 red giant stars that were kinematically selected to be associated with the stellar halo, a subset of which are associated with the Gaia-Enceladus-Sausage halo substructure, and compare their ages to 3 red giant stars in the Galactic disk. Despite systematic differences in both absolute and relative ages determined by this work, age rankings of stars in this sample are robust. Passing the same observable inputs to multiple stellar age determination packages, we measure a weighted average age for the Gaia-Enceladus-Sausage stars in our sample of 8 $\pm$ 3 (stat.) $\pm$ 1 (sys.) Gyr. We also determine hierarchical ages for the populations of Gaia-Enceladus-Sausage, in situ halo and disk stars, finding a Gaia-Enceladus-Sausage population age of 8.0$^{+3.2}_{-2.3}$ Gyr. Although we cannot distinguish hierarchical population ages of halo or disk structures with our limited data and sample of stars, this framework should allow distinct characterization of Galactic substructures using larger stellar samples and additional data available in the near future., 28 pages, 21 figures. During its two year prime mission the Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS) will perform a time-series photometric survey covering over 80% of the sky. This survey comprises observations of 26 24 x 96 degree sectors that are each monitored continuously for approximately 27 days. The main goal of TESS is to find transiting planets around 200,000 pre-selected stars for which fixed aperture photometry is recorded every two minutes. However, TESS is also recording and delivering Full-Frame Images (FFIs) of each detector at a 30 minute cadence. We have created an open-source tool, eleanor, to produce light curves for objects in the TESS FFIs. Here, we describe the methods used in eleanor to produce light curves that are optimized for planet searches. The tool performs background subtraction, aperture and PSF photometry, decorrelation of instrument systematics, and cotrending using principal component analysis. We recover known transiting exoplanets in the FFIs to validate the pipeline and perform a limited search for new planet candidates in Sector 1. Our tests indicate that eleanor produces light curves with significantly less scatter than other tools that have been used in the literature. Cadence-stacked images, and raw and detrended eleanor light curves for each analyzed star will be hosted on MAST, with planet candidates on ExoFOP-TESS as Community TESS Objects of Interest (CTOIs). We present scope (Simulated CCD Observations for Photometric Experimentation), a Python package to create a forward model of telescope detectors and simulate stellar targets with motion relative to the CCD. The primary application of this package is the simulation of the Kepler Space Telescope detector to predict and characterize increased instrumental noise in the spacecraft's final campaigns of observation. As the fuel powering the spacecraft's stabilizing thrusters ran out and thruster fires began to sputter and fail, stellar Point Spread Functions (PSFs) experienced more extreme and less predictable motion relative to regions of varied sensitivity on the spacecraft detector, generating more noise in transiting exoplanet light curves. Using our simulations, we demonstrate that current de-trending techniques effectively capture and remove systematics caused by sensitivity variation for spacecraft motion as high as about ten times that typically experienced by K2. The scope package is open-source and has been generalized to allow custom detector and stellar target parameters. Research documenting the effectiveness of educational or process drama as critical, quality pedagogy particularly in enhancing English and literacy (e.g., Winner, Goldstein, & Vincent-Lancrin, 2013; Saunders, 2015; Ewing 2010b; Ewing, Simons with Campbell & Hertzberg, 2004; Miller Saxton, 2004, 2016; Baldwin & Fleming, 2003) has not impacted in many Australian primary classrooms. Further, Australian teachers report feeling pressured to concentrate on the more technical aspects of the teaching of literacy (and numeracy) as measured in increasingly high stakes tests. It is within this educational context that the School DramaTM program was conceived initially in 2008 and developed over the last decade. This chapter first focuses on the relationship developed between a leading Australian theatre company, Sydney Theatre Company (STC) and the University of Sydney’s Faculty of Education and Social Work (FESW) in order to use one artform, drama, as a lens to interrogate another, contemporary literary texts for children, to enhance literacy learning in its deepest sense. It pays particular attention to the role of the teaching artists in the program and their work with participating primary teachers. The outcomes of the project, from their perspectives and the development of what we have described as a collaborative zone of proximal development (Vygotsky 1978; Ewing, 2015; Moll, Whitmore, 1993) are then discussed. The final act explores some of the outcomes and implications for the ongoing sustainability of the program.

The inclusion of Drama as a subject in the Australian Curriculum is largely a result of the unwavering advocacy of national associations (like Drama Australia) and alliances, in particular the National Advocates for Arts Education (NAAE). This article briefly outlines stages in national curriculum development in Australia and delineates key organisations and individuals who have contributed to the inclusion of drama within Australia’s national curriculum. The paper draws from previously published material, interviews with representatives from each state professional association, and extended interviews with members of the NAAE. The authors propose that the most significant contributing factor to the inclusion of drama in the educational entitlement for all young people in the Australian national curriculum has been collaborative advocacy, carefully managed by a national advocacy collective.

In September 2015, the Australian Federal Government endorsed the final version of the Australian Curriculum arts framework a document resulting from nearly seven years of consultation and development. The Australian Curriculum: The Arts Version 8.0 comprises five subjects: dance, drama, media arts, music and visual arts. This article considers the curriculum development process and highlights interplays between decisions and decision-makers. Now available for implementation in each state and territory of Australia, the nature and structure of the framework remains in question with regard to what aspects of the curriculum will be supported for implementation in each state. At the time of writing, not one state education authority has guaranteed that the curriculum, as written and in full, will be implemented. As a result Drama remains outside the educational entitlement for all children in Australia.

Many western education systems are currently in crisis, providing an increasingly technical approach to classroom learning and assessment. This chapter focuses on how engagement in two artforms, literature and drama, can enable teachers, children and young people to learn in transformative ways. While acknowledging that 'grown-up-ness' is a slightly misleading term, Biesta argues that this concept is at the very heart of envisaging a mature way of being-in-the-world. The Arts remain an under-used component of early childhood and primary curricula despite unequivocal evidence that quality arts experiences and processes are important for human social and emotional wellbeing. The concept of 'grown-up-ness' aligns with empathy and compassion for others but such attributes are not easily measured by testing regimes. Despite the growing body of research documenting the potential of the Arts to transform the learning process, ongoing cuts in pre-service and in-service arts education in Australia has resulted in many teachers expressing a lack of confidence in the Arts.

We report a case of accidental strangulation and crush injury to the anterior neck resulting in laryngeal trauma. This extremely uncommon mechanism of injury provides a safety warning regarding precautions with neck wear, and the unusual resulting injury represents an opportunity to review best practice in management of laryngeal trauma.

In this paper a new method is proposed for learning computer programming. This method utilizes a set of human-readable graphemes and tokens that interactively replace the grammatical tokens of programming languages, using a concept similar to emoticons in social media. The theoretical framework of the proposed method is discussed in detail and two implementations are presented for the programming language ECMAScript (JavaScript). The results from user testing with undergraduate students show that the proposed technique improves the student’s learning outcomes in terms of syntax recall and logic comprehension, in comparison to traditional source code editors.

We present an update to the EVEREST K2 pipeline that addresses various limitations in the previous version and improves the photometric precision of the de-trended light curves. We develop a fast regularization scheme for third order pixel level decorrelation (PLD) and adapt the algorithm to include the PLD vectors of neighboring stars to enhance the predictive power of the model and minimize overfitting, particularly for faint stars. We also modify PLD to work for saturated stars and improve its performance on extremely variable stars. On average, EVEREST 2.0 light curves have 10-20% higher photometric precision than those in the previous version, yielding the highest precision light curves at all Kp magnitudes of any publicly available K2 catalog. For most K2 campaigns, we recover the original Kepler precision to at least Kp = 14, and to at least Kp = 15 for campaigns 1, 5, and 6. We also de-trend all short cadence targets observed by K2, obtaining even higher photometric precision for these stars. All light curves for campaigns 0-8 are available online in the EVEREST catalog, which will be continuously updated with future campaigns. EVEREST 2.0 is open source and is coded in a general framework that can be applied to other photometric surveys, including Kepler and the upcoming TESS mission., 16 pages, 21 figures.
