Abstract

With the increasing demand for compact, lightweight, cost‐effective, and high‐performance radiofrequency (RF) devices, the development of low‐profile antennas becomes crucial. This article presents a study of a novel carbon–cellulose‐based paste intended for screen printing RF devices. The investigation specifically explores the application of high‐reactivity carbon mixture (HRCM) particles as conductive fillers. The results demonstrate that optimal electrical conductivity values and discrete electromagnetic dipole performances can be achieved at lower concentrations of solid conductive material compared to conventional pastes, for similar applications. This offers benefits in terms of total cost, material consumption, and environmental impact. The paste formulation showcases a complex non‐Newtonian behavior, where yielding flow and thixotropicity are found to be independent and dependent on preshear conditions, respectively. This behavior can be attributed to the network orientation and rearrangement of filler structures within the paste system, which in turn are responsible for filler pattern uniformity and overall printing quality. Compared to traditional conductive materials, HRCM pastes are proven to be a viable alternative for RF devices fabrication, including printed Wi‐Fi antennas.

Abstract

The potential of aerogels as catalysts for the synthesis of a relevant class of bis-heterocyclic compounds such as bis(indolyl)methanes was investigated. In particular, the studied catalyst was a nanocomposite aerogel based on nanocrystalline nickel ferrite (NiFe2O4) dispersed on amorphous porous silica aerogel obtained by two-step sol–gel synthesis followed by gel drying under supercritical conditions and calcination treatments. It was found that the NiFe2O4/SiO2 aerogel is an active catalyst for the selected reaction, enabling high conversions at room temperature, and it proved to be active for three repeated runs. The catalytic activity can be ascribed to both the textural and acidic features of the silica matrix and of the nanocrystalline ferrite. In addition, ferrite nanocrystals provide functionality for magnetic recovery of the catalyst from the crude mixture, enabling time-effective separation from the reaction environment. Evidence of the retention of species involved in the reaction into the catalyst is also pointed out, likely due to the porosity of the aerogel together with the affinity of some species towards the silica matrix. Our work contributes to the study of aerogels as catalysts for organic reactions by demonstrating their potential as well as limitations for the room-temperature synthesis of bis(indolyl)methanes.

Abstract

Nanoporous (NP) gold, the most extensively studied and efficient NP metal, possesses exceptional properties that make it highly attractive for advanced technological applications. Notably, its remarkable catalytic properties in various significant reactions hold enormous potential. However, the exploration of its catalytic activity in the degradation of water pollutants remains limited. Nevertheless, previous research has reported the catalytic activity of NP Au in the degradation of methyl orange (MO), a toxic azo dye commonly found in water. This study aims to investigate the behavior of nanoporous gold in MO solutions using UV-Vis absorption spectroscopy and high-performance liquid chromatography. The NP Au was prepared by chemical removal of silver atoms of an AuAg precursor alloy prepared by ball milling. Immersion tests were conducted on both pellets and powders of NP Au, followed by examination of the residual solutions. Additionally, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and electrochemical impedance measurements were employed to analyze NP Au after the tests. The findings reveal that the predominant and faster process involves the partially reversible adsorption of MO onto NP Au, while the catalytic degradation of the dye plays a secondary and slower role in this system.

Abstract

Carasau bread is a typical Sardinian baking product, with great commercial potential, due to its long shelf life. Nowadays, its production is performed, in most cases, in small or medium size factories, where the working conditions and quality properties of the product are set on an empirical basis. Thus, the processing know-how lacks quantitative information, and the product is still far from standardization. As a result, industrial-scale manufacturing is hindered. The literature presents some studies devoted to better explaining the effect of semolina doughs' main constituents (gluten, starch, etc.) on their rheological properties or to infer the latter through in-line measurement. However, it is still necessary to understand the role of each working parameter in conditioning the dough rheology. This work investigated the role of five working parameters: yeast amount, salt amount, water temperature, kneading time, and leavening time. The water amount was kept constant to avoid covering other effects because its role can be predominant in most cases. A Design of Experiments (DOE) was performed, in order to plan the experimental campaign. First, the dough samples were tested through a parallel plate rheometer (Anton Paar, model MCR 102), applying both creep and frequency sweep tests. Moreover, the same samples were subjected to Texture Profile Analysis (TPA) to highlight possible correlations between theoretical rheological model parameters and TPA ones, which can be obtained in shorter times, so being more suitable for process monitoring purposes.

Abstract

The cobalt complex (I) with cyclopentadienyl and 2-aminothiophenolate ligands was investigated as a homogeneous catalyst for electrochemical CO2 reduction. By comparing its behavior with an analogous complex with the phenylenediamine (II), the effect of sulfur atom as a substituent has been evaluated. As a result, a positive shift of the reduction potential and the reversibility of the corresponding redox process have been observed, also suggesting a higher stability of the compound with sulfur. Under anhydrous conditions, complex I showed a higher current enhancement in the presence of CO2 (9.41) in comparison with II (4.12). Moreover, the presence of only one -NH group in I explained the difference in the observed increases on the catalytic activity toward CO2 due to the presence of water, with current enhancements of 22.73 and 24.40 for I and II, respectively. DFT calculations confirmed the effect of sulfur on the lowering of the energy of the frontier orbitals of I, highlighted by electrochemical measurements. Furthermore, the condensed Fukui function f − values agreed very well with the current enhancement observed in the absence of water.

Abstract

A series of 6- and 6,8-halocoumarin derivatives have been investigated as potential antiproliferative compounds against a panel of tumor and normal cell lines. Cytotoxic effects were determined by the MTT method. To investigate the potential molecular mechanism involved in the cytotoxic effect, apoptosis assay, cell cycle analysis, reactive oxygen species (ROS), and reduced glutathione analysis were performed. Among the screened compounds, coumarins 6,8-dibromo-2-oxo-2H-chromene-3-carbonitrile 2h and 6,8-diiodo-2-oxo-2H-chromene-3-carbonitrile 2k exhibited the most antiproliferative effect in thyroid cancer-derived cells TPC-1. The apoptosis assay showed that both 2h and 2k induced apoptosis in TPC-1 thyroid cancer cells. According to these experiments, both coumarins induced a slight increase in TPC-1 cells in the G2/M phase and a decrease in the S phase. A significant increase in ROS levels was observed in TPC-1 treated with diiodocoumarin 2k, while the dibromocoumarin 2h induced a decrease in ROS in a dose and time-dependent manner.

Abstract

The present case study reports a shear rheological characterization in the temperature domain of inks and pastes loaded with conductive High Reactivity Carbonaceous Material (HRCM) consisting mainly of few-layers graphene sheets. The combined effect of filler concentration and applied shear rate is investigated in terms of the shear viscosity response as a function of testing temperature. The non-Newtonian features of shear flow ramps at constant temperature are reported to depend on both the HRCM load and the testing temperature. Moreover, temperature ramps at a constant shear rate reveal a different viscosity–temperature dependence from what is observed in shear flow ramps while maintaining the same filler concentration. An apparent departure from the well-known Vogel–Fulcher–Tamman relationship as a function of the applied shear rate is also reported.

Abstract

Four cyclopentadienyl-phenylendiamino-cobalt complexes [CoCp(bqdi)] with different substituents (R) at the phenylene moiety (bqdi, I; o-perfluoro-bqdi, II; p-NO2-bqdi, III; p-COOH-bqdi, IV) have been studied with an aim to investigate their capability as catalysts for the CO2 reduction. These compounds were characterized by cyclic voltammetry measurements both under nitrogen and CO2 atmospheres, showing an increase in the cathodic current ranging from 3.36 (III) to 5.59 times (II) that of the measurement under nitrogen. Moreover, with the addition of water, the current enhancement in the presence of CO2 reaches 31.07 times that of the case of complex II. Interestingly, these complexes exhibit very good selectivity toward CO2 reduction irrespective of hydrogen even in the presence of water. The relative turnover frequencies were also estimated, given the values ranging from 3.23 (III) to 187.21 s−1 (II) in the presence of water. In addition, these results were analysed by means of density functional theory (DFT) calculations and Fukui functions analysis. In particular, DFT results clearly show effects of different substituents on the electrochemical properties of these compounds. Whereas, the Fukui functions analysis indicates that the most favourable positions for an electrophilic attack on the reduced complex are the nitrogen and cobalt atoms.

This book explores the decision by the Grand National Assembly of Turkey in 1924 to abolish the caliphate. The Ottoman sultans had long borne the title of caliphs of Islam, with all the prestigious authority throughout the Muslim world that went with it, and in the aftermath of the First World War the caliphate still retained great symbolic relevance.The book considers the questions that arose with its abolition, including whether or not the caliphate should be revived, reformed or replaced by other forms of political affiliation and organization. It also assesses more general issues concerning identity and legitimate authority, and how to reconcile time-honoured religious institutions and concepts with modernity, the nation-state and affiliations of an ethnic and religious nature. The book additionally addresses the debates within the pan-Islamic congresses concerning the fate of the caliphate, and the implications of its abolition for Kurdish–Turkish relations and for the British and French Empires with their large Muslim populations.

The Paterno-Buchi reaction between benzaldehyde and trimethylsilyloxycyclopentene gave access to unprecedented silyl ether derivatives of 6-oxabicyclo[3.2.0]heptan-1-ol. These bicyclic structures underwent selective reductive ring opening as well as acid-catalysed pinacol-type rearrangement with complete regioselectivity, accompanied by moderate or excellent mechanism-dependent diastereoselectivity.

A simple and practical protocol for the construction of synthetically important quaternary α-benzyl- and α-allyl-α-methylamino cyclobutanones in good to high yield, via a sequential one-pot methylation/sigmatropic rearrangement, has been accomplished for the first time. The quaternary α-alkyl-α-amino cyclobutanones could be further manipulated, affording synthetically interesting scaffolds such as highly substituted tryptamines and cyclobuta-fused indolines.

Abstract

The fluorinated half sandwich complex [CpCoLF] (Cp = cyclopentadiene; LF = o-perfluoro-phenylenediimine; 2F) shows a T-shaped geometry with the LF ligand coplanar with the metallocycle. The molecules are dimerized in a head-to-tail fashion and arranged in a herringbone manner in the crystal packing. The crystal structure of 2F is different from that of the corresponding hydrocarbon compound (2H). Moreover, the differences due to the presence of fluorine atoms are also highlighted by the analysis of the intermolecular contacts, which show that 2F exhibits several F⋯F contacts, as well as aromatic intra-dimer π … π interactions in addition to C–H … π and C–H⋯F contacts. No relevant π … π interactions are observed in the case of 2H. Hirshfeld Surface (HS) analysis also depicted well the differences in the solid state interactions between the different crystal structures. In particular, HS has been useful in highlighting the differences observed between the crystal structure of 2H obtained from Rietveld refinement and that measured on single crystal (2HP and 2HSCH, respectively). The effect of the fluorination on the electronic structure has been investigated also by CV measurements and Density Functional Theory calculations. Both are consistent with a lowering in energy of the molecular orbitals. Data Mining Force Field calculations clearly indicate that the 2HSCH structure is more stable than the 2HP one. These findings can be explained in terms of the energy of the intermolecular interactions. The enhanced stability of the fluorine substitute can be easily explained by the large number of strong interactions involving fluorine atoms.

An asymmetric synthesis of α-aryl amino-β-nitro cyclohexanes has been achieved by means of a tandem aza-Michael addition-protonation reaction starting from 1-nitro cyclohexene and anilines. The transformation is proposed to proceed via a transient nitrile enolate which is subsequently stereoselectively protonated by an intramolecular transfer of the proton from nitrogen to the nitronate α-carbon.

An organocatalytic enantioselective synthesis of α-(benzylamino)cyclobutanones has been achieved by employing a tandem condensation/intramolecular rearrangement/proton transfer reaction and starting from racemic α-hydroxycyclobutanone and a selection of benzylamines. This reaction sequence afforded the products in good to high yields with moderate to high enantioselectivities.

Abstract

Left ventricular hypertrophy (LVH) is significantly related to adverse clinical outcomes in patients at high risk of cardiovascular events. In patients with atrial fibrillation (AF), data on LVH, that is, prevalence and determinants, are inconsistent mainly because of different definitions and heterogeneity of study populations. We determined echocardiographic-based LVH prevalence and clinical factors independently associated with its development in a prospective cohort of patients with non-valvular (NV) AF. From the "Atrial Fibrillation Registry for Ankle-brachial Index Prevalence Assessment: Collaborative Italian Study" (ARAPACIS) population, 1,184 patients with NVAF (mean age 72 ± 11 years; 56% men) with complete data to define LVH were selected. ARAPACIS is a multicenter, observational, prospective, longitudinal on-going study designed to estimate prevalence of peripheral artery disease in patients with NVAF. We found a high prevalence of LVH (52%) in patients with NVAF. Compared to those without LVH, patients with AF with LVH were older and had a higher prevalence of hypertension, diabetes, and previous myocardial infarction (MI). A higher prevalence of ankle-brachial index ≤0.90 was seen in patients with LVH (22 vs 17%, p = 0.0392).
