Motivational interviewing (MI; Miller & Rollnick, 2012) has expanded from treating substance use disorders to other health concerns across a range of racial-ethnic groups and ages. The spirit of MI lends itself well to working with culturally diverse populations by eliciting the client's values and goals in a collaborative and client-centered approach in pursuit of behavior change. Additionally, MI has been further adapted for use with racial-ethnic minority groups to enhance its effectiveness with specific populations. The aim of this review was to investigate existing cultural adaptations of MI (CAMI), their effectiveness, and to provide directions for future cultural adaptations in both research and clinical settings. This systematic review identified studies of CAMI over the past 20 years using MEDLINE/Pubmed and Embase. The final dataset consisted of 25 peer review studies. In the randomized controlled trial (RCT) studies that utilized a control condition (n = 17), 10 studies showed that the CAMI condition performed significantly better on at least the primary outcome measure than the control condition. All 10 studies adapted Context, Content, and Concepts-three of the dimensions of cultural adaptation defined by the ecological validity framework used in this study (Bernal et al., 1995). Intervention scientists have used program theory-driven evaluation to design, implement, and assess the success of intervention programs for decades. However, interventions often are designed without the input of the community for which they are intended. The lack of incorporation of community members' voices that participate in various intervention programs and the de-emphasis of systemic influences on program outcomes may decrease the extent to which participants experience intended positive outcomes. This often leads to interventions that are irrelevant at best and harmful at worst. Theory of change and logic models are two forms of theory-driven evaluation that can be used in tandem to incorporate community voices into program design and implementation while attending to systemic influences on the program. The following paper presents a stage model process for creating and utilizing both a theory of change and logic model for community-based intervention programs aiming to work with ethnically and racially diverse and immigrant populations.

International service learning courses, cultural immersion projects, and international disaster response teams have provided valuable aid, services, supplies and programs to trauma-impacted communities across the globe. Many colleges and universities support global learning and the creation of global citizens, and this ethic is reflected in many educational mission statements. To avoid a tepid humanitarian response to a disaster, it is important for human services providers to critically examine their motivations for assisting so that the result reflects justice, integrity, and cultural competence. This article offers a set of reflective questions for human services providers, cultural immersion curriculum developers, and independent agents to ponder prior to responding to international disasters. We used a qualitative social justice framework to inform and design applied practice recovery efforts. This framework promotes meaningful dialogue for ensuring mutually reciprocal recovery efforts, a goal that will be ultimately more empowering in the long run.

In the human services professions, cultural immersion experiences help satisfy multicultural training standards established by national accreditation bodies. Immersion in a culturally sensitive manner is necessary as we prepare professionals to work with and serve citizens of the globe. The authors describe an international cultural immersion protocol with a semester-long course component, provide recommendations for curriculum developers who wish to establish similar programs, and summarize outcomes related to cultural awareness. Such information might aid other higher education programs aimed at developing similar protocols for their students.

This study documents the vicarious psychological impact of the 2010 earthquake in Haiti on Haitians living in the United States. The role of coping resources--family, religious, and community support--was explored. The results highlight the importance of family and community as coping strategies to manage such trauma.

Haitian women constitute a group that is lauded within Haiti as the "pillar of society" and yet is also often silenced both within Haiti and abroad. Given the role of the media in shaping attitudes and behaviors toward Women of Color, evaluation of media portrayals is critical to challenge oppressive discourses about these groups. Therefore, in this study, the authors conducted a thematic analysis of 650 photographs of Haitian women in the Associated Press Photo Archive in the years 1994-2009. The analysis comprised a two-step process: First, the authors identified coding categories through an inductive analysis of the data; later, these categories were analyzed from a feminist poststructuralist framework to generate themes that could describe how Haitian women are positioned in relation to media consumers. The three themes generated--"Negotiating Power and Resistance," "Enacting Haitian Culture," and "Showcasing Affliction"--delineate the media's tendency to emphasize the "otherness" in Haitian women, as well as to characterize this group as victims in need of rescuing by powerful others. The authors conclude by emphasizing the impact of these images on the identity of Haitian women and Women of Color, as well as on the attitudes and behaviors of media consumers toward these groups. Educational attainment is often linked to upward mobility in the United States. As a result, current research has focused on the educational attainment of various racial groups, including Black Americans. However, few studies have examined the various ethnic and immigrant groups that comprise the Black population. To address this gap, the current article focuses on the educational attainment of Haitian immigrants (n = 150) living in the United States. Results indicate that socioeconomic status (SES) is a predictor of educational attainment but, contrary to previous research, gender and aspirations are unrelated. Implications for educators and policy makers are discussed. (Contains 2 tables and 4 figures.)

The strengths of Black youths lie in their abilities to resist the barriers that they encounter in the various environments in which they exist. Yet the media and social science literature have defined the youths in terms of the pathology of their environments rather than focusing on the assets that Black youths use in such environments. Thus, terms such as inner city, urban, and at-risk are used as proxies for the youths' personality attributes and themes, such as violence, substance abuse, school underachievement, and family instability are used to define their life experiences. In doing so, the literature suggests that the negative behaviors that it ascribes to Black youths are normative in actuality. In this article, a new framework for understanding the assets of Black youths is provided. The framework highlights the role of racial socialization in the youths' development of strengths that allow them to cope effectively with barriers. (Contains 1 figure.)

As the psychology field moves towards establishing more evidence-based treatment (EBT), the applicability of EBT for different racial and immigrant groups (i.e., African American, Asian Americans and Pacific Islander, and Native American/Native Alaskan) is paramount. The current paper highlights the process of culturally adapting an EBT group cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) intervention for use with Haitian American adolescents diagnosed with depression. Overall the main objective of this project was to culturally adapt the Adolescent Coping with Depression Course (ACDC) to ensure that it includes cultural factors that are likely to engage and retain Haitian adolescents in mental health treatment. The paper summarizes the cultural training of the focus group leaders, the focus group sessions with a group of Haitian middle-school students, and the feedback received from the participants regarding the intervention. Empathic family stress refers to the stress that individuals experience in response to difficult life circumstances of family members. The current study took a first step in examining the empathic family stress of 134 Haitian immigrants. Results from hierarchical regressions indicate that empathic family stress is a significant predictor of depressive symptoms, but not acculturative stress, for Haitian immigrants. Findings from the study are examined from a strengths-based perspective, where empathic family stress is viewed as a sign of strong family connections among Haitian immigrants. Recommendations are provided for clinicians working with Haitian immigrants to help them experience empathic family stress in a healthy manner. Currently, ethnic and racial minority individuals represent a large proportion of the U.S. population, and researchers expect that they will represent the majority of the population by 2050. This shift in U.S. demographics calls for a greater awareness and integration of cultural issues into the assessment and treatment of ethnically and linguistically diverse clients. This article examines the unique beliefs and manifestations of illnesses among Haitians in connection with the American Psychological Association's (APA, 2002) Multicultural Guidelines. The authors use a common culture-bound syndrome, Seizisman, to illustrate the cultural beliefs, assessment, and treatment of illnesses among Haitians. In so doing, they demonstrate how to incorporate the APA Multicultural Guidelines into treatment with clients of diverse cultural and racial backgrounds. The Caribbean region represents a mosaic of cultures and languages, bound by a common experience of colonization, and marked by distinct histories of freedom and independence. Throughout the various countries that comprise the region, the role and importance of women is clearly recognized, highlighted, and demonstrated. Gender issues and feminist ideals have been and continue to be an area of discourse in all disciplines, including psychology. In this article, we provide an overview of the Caribbean region in order to contextualize the information presented. Next, we highlight three different countries in the region, US Virgin Islands, Haiti, and Guyana, to showcase the characteristics and experiences (i.e., gender role and gender socialization) of women in these respective countries, as well representations of feminist ideals. Lastly, we highlight the integration of Caribbean cultural backgrounds, social/political contexts, and feminist ideals in psychotherapeutic interventions with women in the region with specific recommendations for psychotherapy treatment process and outcomes.
