Recent evidence suggests that during volitional stepping older adults control whole-body angular momentum (H) less effectively than younger adults, which may impose a greater challenge for balance control during this task in the elderly. This study investigated the influence of aging on the segment angular momenta and their contributions to H during stepping. Eighteen old and 15 young healthy adults were instructed to perform a series of stepping at two speed conditions: preferred and as fast as possible. Full-body kinematics were recorded to compute angular momenta of the trunk, arms and legs and their contributions to total absolute H on the entire stepping movement. Results indicated that older adults exhibited larger angular momenta of the trunk and legs in the sagittal plane, which contributed to a higher sagittal plane H range during stepping compared to young adults. Results also revealed that older adults had a greater trunk contribution and lower leg contribution to total absolute H in the sagittal plane compared to young adults, even though there was no difference in the other two planes. These results stress that age-related changes in H control during stepping arise as a result of changes in trunk and leg rotational dynamics.

1AbstractTeam lifting is a complex and collective motor task that possesses both motor and cognitive components. The purpose of this study was to investigate to what extent the biomechanics of a collective load carriage is affected when a dyad of individuals is performing a carrying task with an additional accuracy constraint. Ten dyads performed a first condition in which they collectively transported a load (CC), and a second one in which they transported the same load while maintaining a ball in a target position on its top (PC).The recovery-rate, amplitude, and period of the center-of-mass (COM) trajectory were computed for the whole system (dyad + table = PACS). We analyzed the forces and moments exerted at each joint of the upper limbs of the subjects. We observed a decrease in the overall performance of the dyads when the Precision task was added, i.e., i) the velocity and amplitude of CoMPACS decreased by 1,7% and 5,8%, respectively, ii) inter-subject variability of the Moment-Cost-Function decreased by 95% and recovery rate decreased by 19,2% during PC. A kinetic synergy analysis showed that the subjects reorganized their coordination in the PC.Our results demonstrate that adding a precision task affects the economy of collective load carriage. Notwithstanding, the joint moments at the upper-limbs are better balanced and co-vary more across the paired subjects during the precision task. Our study results may find applications in domains such as Ergonomics, Robotics-developments, and Rehabilitation.

The biomechanics of load carriage has been studied extensively with regards to single individuals, yet not so much with regards to collective transport. We investigated the biomechanics of walking in 10 paired individuals carrying a load that represented 20%, 30%, or 40% of the aggregated body-masses. We computed the energy recovery rate at the center of mass of the system consisting of the two individuals plus the carried load in order to test to what extent the pendulum-like behavior and the economy of the gait were affected. Joint torque was also computed to investigate the intra- and inter-subject strategies occurring in response to this. The ability of the subjects to move the whole system like a pendulum appeared rendered obvious through shortened step length and lowered vertical displacements at the center of mass of the system, while energy recovery rate and total mechanical energy remained constant. In parallel, an asymmetry of joint moment vertical amplitude and coupling among individuals in all pairs suggested the emergence of a leader/follower schema. Beyond the 30% threshold of increased load mass, the constraints at the joint level were balanced among individuals leading to a degraded pendulum-like behavior.

International audience; Muscle synergy analysis is increasingly used in domains such as neurosciences, robotics, rehabilitation or sport sciences to analyze and better understand motor coordination. The analysis uses dimensionality reduction techniques to identify regularities in spatial, temporal or spatio-temporal patterns of multiple muscle activation. Recent studies have pointed out variability in outcomes associated with the different methodological options available and there was a need to clarify several aspects of the analysis methodology. While synergy analysis appears to be a robust technique, it remain a statistical tool and is, therefore, sensitive to the amount and quality of input data (EMGs). In particular, attention should be paid to EMG amplitude normalization, baseline noise removal or EMG filtering which may diminish or increase the signal-to-noise ratio of the EMG signal and could have major effects on synergy estimates. In order to robustly identify synergies, experiments should be performed so that the groups of muscles that would potentially form a synergy are activated with a sufficient level of activity, ensuring that the synergy subspace is fully explored. The concurrent use of various synergy formulations-spatial, temporal and spatio-temporal synergies- should be encouraged. The number of synergies represents either the dimension of the spatial structure or the number of independent temporal patterns, and we observed that these two aspects are often mixed in the analysis. To select a number, criteria based on noise estimates, reliability of analysis results, or functional outcomes of the synergies provide interesting substitutes to criteria solely based on variance thresholds.

The Lokomat is a robotic device that has been suggested to make gait therapy easier, more comfortable, and more efficient. In this study, we asked whether the Lokomat promotes physiological muscle activation patterns, a fundamental question when considering motor learning and adaptation. We investigated lower limb muscles coordination in terms of muscle activity level, muscle activity pattern similarity, and muscle synergy in 15 healthy participants walking at 3 km/h on either a treadmill or in a Lokomat at various guidance forces (GF: 30, 50 or 70%) and body weight supports (BWS: 30, 50 or 70% of participant’s body weight). Walking in the Lokomat was associated with a greater activation level of the rectus femoris and vastus medialis (×2–3) compared to treadmill walking. The level of activity tended to be diminished in gastrocnemius and semi-tendinosus, which particularly affected the similarity with treadmill walking (normalized scalar product NSP = 0.7–0.8). GF and BWS independently altered the muscle activation pattern in terms of amplitude and shape. Increasing BWS decreased the level of activity in all but one muscle (the soleus). Increasing GF slightly improved the similarity with treadmill walking for the tibialis anterior and vastus medialis muscles. The muscle synergies (N = 4) were similar (NSP = 0.93–0.97), but a cross-validation procedure revealed an alteration by the Lokomat. The activation of these synergies differed (NSP = 0.74–0.82). The effects of GF and BWS are modest compared to the effect of the Lokomat itself, suggesting that Lokomat design should be improved to promote more typical muscle activity patterns.

Purpose Lowering a load could be associated with abnormal shoulder and scapular motion. We tested the hypothesis that lowering a load involves different shoulder muscle coordination strategies compared to lifting a load. Methods EMG activity of 13 muscles was recorded in 30 healthy volunteers who lifted and lowered a 6, 12 or 18 kg box between three shelves. Kinematics, EMG levels and muscle synergies, extracted using non-negative matrix factorization, were analyzed. Results We found greater muscle activity level during lowering in four muscles (+ 1–2% MVC in anterior deltoid, biceps brachii, serratus anterior and pectoralis major). The movements were performed faster during lifting (18.2 vs. 15.9 cm/s) but with similar hand paths and segment kinematics. The number of synergies was the same in both tasks. Two synergies were identified in ~ 75% of subjects, and one synergy in the others. Synergy #1 mainly activated prime movers’ muscles, while synergy #2 co-activated several antagonist muscles. Synergies’ structure was similar between lifting and lowering (Pearson’s r ≈ 0.9 for synergy #1 and 0.7–08 for synergy #2). Synergy #2 was more activated during lowering and explained the greater activity observed in anterior deltoid, serratus anterior and pectoralis. Conclusion Lifting and lowering a load were associated with similar synergy structure. In 3/4 of subjects, lowering movements involved greater activation of a “multiple antagonists” synergy. The other subjects co-contracted all shoulder muscles as a unit in both conditions. These inter-individual differences should be investigated in the occurrence of shoulder musculoskeletal disorders.

Background Lockdown has been one of the major worldwide strategies to control the spread of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). Its consequences on the well-being of individuals needs to be better understood. The objective of this work was to evaluate the impact of lockdown on the well-being of a general population and the factors associated with this potential impairment of well-being in a population that has been only lightly affected by COVID-19 such as in Reunion island, an overseas French department. Methods An online survey was proposed to the population of Reunion Island between the 35th and 54th days of lockdown relative to pre- and per-lockdown periods. Well-being was measured by the 5-item World Health Organization Well-Being Index, with some questions about sleep habits (Pittsburgh questionnaire), weekly physical activity (IPAQ), health, and lifestyle. Results Four hundred volunteers answered the survey. They reported a 15.7% decrease in well-being (p, Highlights • Impairment in well-being accompanied the COVID-19 lockdown. • Sleep habits changed with a poor quality, longer and shifted sleep. • Lack of physical activity and poor-quality sleep are related to a decrease in well-being. • Promotion of physical activity and sleep hygiene could improve well-being.

Reaching from standing requires simultaneous adjustments of focal and postural task elements. We investigated the ability of people with stroke to stabilize the endpoint trajectory while maintaining balance during standing reaches. Nineteen stroke and 11 age-equivalent healthy subjects reached toward a target (n = 30 trials) located beyond arm length from standing. Endpoint and center-of-mass (COM) trajectories were analyzed using the uncontrolled manifold (UCM) approach, with segment angles as elemental variables. A synergy index (SI) represented the normalized difference between segment angle combinations, leading to endpoint or COM trajectory stabilization (VUCM) and lack of stabilization (in an orthogonal space; VORT). A higher SI reflects greater stability. In both groups, the endpoint SI (SIEND) decreased in parallel with endpoint velocity and returned close to baseline at the end of the movement. The range of SIEND was significantly greater in stroke (median: 0.87; QR:0.54) compared with healthy subjects (median: 0.58; QR: 0.33; P = 0.009). In both groups, the lowest SIEND occurred at the endpoint peak velocity, whereas the minimal SIEND of the stroke group (median: 0.51; QR:0.41) was lower than the healthy group (median: 0.25; QR: 0.50; P = 0.033). The COM SI (SICOM) remained stable in both groups (~0.8). The maintenance of a high SICOM despite a large reduction of SIEND in stroke subjects suggests that kinematic redundancy was effectively used to stabilize the COM position, but less so for endpoint position stabilization. Both focal and postural task elements should be considered when analyzing whole body reaching deficits in patients with stroke. NEW & NOTEWORTHY Reaching from standing requires simultaneous adjustments of endpoint and center-of-mass (COM) positions. We used uncontrolled manifold analysis to investigate the impact of stroke on the ability to use kinematic redundancy in this task. Our results showed that COM position was stabilized, whereas endpoint trajectory was more variable in stroke than healthy subjects. Enhancing the capacity to meet multiple task goals may be beneficial for motor recovery after stroke.

Objectives The corticospinal system (CS) regulates muscle activation through shifts in muscle-level tonic stretch-reflex thresholds (TSRT). This ability is impaired in stroke and contributes to sensorimotor impairments such as spasticity. We determined the role of CS in elbow flexor activity regulation in healthy and post-stroke subjects. We also determined whether CS modulation deficits were related to sensorimotor impairment intensity in post-stroke individuals. Methods Seventeen healthy (59.8 ± 12.2 yr) and 27 stroke subjects (58.7 ± 10.1 yr) had transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) applied over the primary motor cortex (M1) flexor representation to elicit motor-evoked potentials (MEPs) in elbow flexors in different angular positions. In a subset of post-stroke subjects (n = 12), flexor TSRTs were measured in passive and active conditions, and TSRT modulation was determined. Results Position-related MEP amplitude modulation was similar in healthy and mild stroke subjects, while subjects with more severe stroke exhibited less consistent modulation. MEP modulation in stroke was related to clinical upper limb motor impairment, spasticity, and the ability to modulate TSRTs between passive and active elbow movements. Conclusions CS output was closely related to TSRT modulation. Impairments in TSRT regulation may underlie motor deficits in moderate-to-severe post-stroke individuals. Significance Translation of these neurophysiological findings to clinical applications may enhance post-stroke motor recovery.

International audience; This study addresses the question of how posture and movement are oriented with respect to the direction of gravity. It is suggested that neural control levels coordinate spatial thresholds at which multiple muscles begin to be activated to specify a referent body orientation (RO) at which muscle activity is minimized. Under the influence of gravity, the body is deflected from the RO to an actual orientation (AO) until the emerging muscle activity and forces begin to balance gravitational forces and maintain body stability. We assumed that (1) during quiet standing on differently tilted surfaces, the same RO and thus AO can be maintained by adjusting activation thresholds of ankle muscles according to the surface tilt angle; (2) intentional forward body leaning results from monotonic ramp-and-hold shifts in the RO; (3) rhythmic oscillation of the RO about the ankle joints during standing results in body swaying. At certain sway phases, the AO and RO may transiently overlap, resulting in minima in the activity of multiple muscles across the body. EMG kinematic patterns of the 3 tasks were recorded and explained based on the RO concept that implies that these patterns emerge due to referent control without being pre-programmed. We also confirmed the predicted occurrence of minima in the activity of multiple muscles at specific body configurations during swaying. Results re-affirm previous rejections of model-based computational theories of motor control. The role of different descending systems in the referent control of posture and movement in the gravitational field is considered.

Objectives Voluntary movements post-stroke are affected by abnormal muscle activation due to exaggerated stretch reflexes (SRs). We examined the ability of post-stroke subjects to regulate SRs in spastic muscles. Methods Elbow flexor and extensor EMGs and joint angle were recorded in 13 subjects with chronic post-stroke spasticity. Muscles were either stretched passively (relaxed arm) or actively (antagonist contraction) at different velocities. Velocity-dependent SR thresholds were defined as angles where stretched muscle EMG exceeded 3SDs of baseline. Sensitivity of SRs to stretch velocity was defined as µ. The regression through thresholds was interpolated to zero velocity to obtain the tonic SR threshold (TSRT) angle. Results Compared to passive stretches, TSRTs during active motion occurred at longer muscle lengths (i.e., increased in flexors and decreased in extensors by 10–40°). Values of μ increased by 1.5–4.0. Changes in flexor TSRTs during active compared to passive stretches were correlated with clinical spasticity (r = −0.68) and arm motor impairment (r = 0.81). Conclusions Spasticity thresholds measured at rest were modulated during active movement. Arm motor impairments were related to the ability to modulate SR thresholds between the two states rather than to passive-state values. Significance Relationship between spasticity and movement disorders may be explained by deficits in SR threshold range of regulation and modifiability, representing a measure of stroke-related sensorimotor deficits.

However, the factors explaining the sit-stand transition in cycling are unclear. This study investigated if biomechanical and/or muscle activation cost functions could predict the power at which the spontaneous sit-stand transition occurs. Twenty-five participants performed an incremental test leading to the sit-to-stand transition, and subsequent randomized pedaling trials at 20 to 120% of the transition power in seated and standing position. A Moment Cost Function based on lower limbs net joint moments and two Electromyographic Cost Functions based on EMG data were defined. All cost functions increased with increasing crank power (p < 0.001) but at different rates in the seated and standing positions. They had lower values in the seated position below the transition power and lower values in the standing position above the transition power (p < 0.05). These results suggest that spontaneous change of position observed in cycling with increasing crank power represents an optimal choice to minimize muscular efforts. These results support the use of simple cost functions to define optimal settings in cycling and to assess the cost of cycling during short-term efforts.

The role of corticospinal (CS) pathways in anticipatory motor actions was evaluated using transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) of the primary motor cortex projecting to motoneurons (MNs) of wrist muscles. Preloaded wrist flexors were suddenly unloaded by the experimenter or by the subject using the other hand (self-unloading). After sudden unloading, the wrist joint involuntarily flexed to a new position. In contrast, during self-unloading the wrist remained almost motionless, implying that an anticipatory postural adjustment occurred. In the self-unloading task, anticipation was manifested by a decrease in descending facilitation of pre-activated flexor MNs starting ∼72 ms before changes in the background EMG activity. Descending facilitation of extensor MNs began to increase ∼61 ms later. Conversely, these influences remained unchanged before sudden unloading, implying the absence of anticipation. We also tested TMS responses during EMG silent periods produced by brief muscle shortening, transiently resulting in similar EMG levels before the onset and after the end of self-unloading. We found reduced descending facilitation of flexor MNs after self-unloading. To explain why the wrist excursion was minimized in self-unloading due to these changes in descending influences, we relied on previous demonstrations that descending systems pre-set the threshold positions of body segments at which muscles begin to be activated, thus pre-determining the equilibrium point to which the system is attracted. Based on this notion, a more consistent explanation of the kinematic, EMG and descending patterns in the two types of unloading is proposed compared to the alternative notion of direct pre-programming of kinematic and/or EMG patterns. The empirically based referent control theory of motor actions provides a new framework for understanding locomotor maturation. Mature movement patterns of referent control are characterized by periods of minimization of activity across multiple muscles (global electromyographic [EMG] minima) resulting from transient matching between actual and referent body configurations. We identified whether locomotor maturation in young children was associated with (a) development of referent control and (b) children's frequency of participation in everyday activities evaluated by parents. Kinematics and EMG activity were recorded from typically developing children (n = 15, 3-5 years) and young adults (n = 10, 18-25 years) while walking, vertical or forward jumping. Presence and location of global EMG minima in movement cycles, slopes of ankle vertical/sagittal displacements, and shoulder displacement ratios were evaluated. Children had fewer global EMG minima compared to adults during specific phases of vertical and forward jumps. Ankle displacement profiles for walking and jumping forward were related to each other in adults, whereas those for walking and vertical jumping were related in children. Higher frequency of participation was significantly correlated with more mature jumping patterns in children. A decrease in the number of global EMG minima and changes in ankle movement patterns could be indicators of locomotor immaturity in typically developing children.

Several suggestions on the upper limb involvement in cycling exist but, to date, no study has quantified upper limb kinetics in this task. The aim of this study was to determine how crank power and pedaling position (seated or standing) affect upper limb kinetics. Handlebar loadings and upper limb kinematics were collected from 17 participants performing seated or standing pedaling trials in a random order at 6 crank powers ranging from 20% (112 ± 19 W) to 120% (675 ± 113 W) of their spontaneous sit-to-stand transition power. An inverse dynamics approach was used to compute 3D moments, powers, and works at the wrist, elbow, and shoulder joints. Over 29 parameters investigated, increases in crank power were associated with increases in the magnitudes of 23 and 20 of the kinetic variables assessed in seated and standing positions, respectively. The standing position was associated with higher magnitudes of upper limb kinetics. These results suggest that both upper and lower limbs should be considered in future models to better understand whole body coordination in cycling.

International audience; State-of-the-art biomechanical laboratories provide a range of tools that allow precise measurements of kinematic, kinetic, motor and physiologic characteristics. Force sensors, motion capture devices and electromyographic recording measure the forces exerted at the pedal, saddle, and handlebar and the joint torques created by muscle activity. These techniques make it possible to obtain a detailed biomechanical analysis of cycling movements. However, despite the reasonable accuracy of such measures, cycling performance remains difficult to fully explain. There is an increasing demand by professionals and amateurs for various biomechanical assessment services. Most of the difficulties in understanding the link between biomechanics and performance arise because of the constraints imposed by the bicycle, human physiology and musculo-skeletal system. Recent studies have also pointed out the importance of evaluating not only output parameters, such as power output, but also intrinsic factors, such as the cyclist coordination. In this narrative review, we present various techniques allowing the assessment of a cyclist at a biomechanical level, together with elements of interpretation, and we show that it is not easy to determine whether a certain technique is optimal or not.

International audience; When a high power output is required in cycling, a spontaneous transition by the cyclist from a seated to a standing position generally occurs. In this study, by varying the cadence and cyclist bodyweight, we tested whether the transition is better explained by the greater power economy of a standing position or by the emergence of mechanical constraints that force cyclists to stand. Ten males participated in five experimental sessions corresponding to different bodyweights (80%, 100%, or 120%) and cadences (50 RPM, 70 RPM, or 90 RPM). In each session, we first determined the seat-to-stand transition power (SSTP) in an incremental test. The participants then cycled at 20%, 40%, 60%, 80%, 100%, or 120% of the SSTP in the seated and standing positions, for which we recorded the saddle forces and electromyogram (EMG) signals of eight lower limb muscles. We estimated the cycling cost using an EMG cost function (ECF) and the minimal saddle forces in the seated position as an indicator of the mechanical constraints.Our results show the SSTP to vary with respect to both cadence and bodyweight. The ECF was lower in the standing position above the SSTP value (i.e., at 120%) in all experimental sessions. The minimal saddle forces varied significantly with respect to both cadence and bodyweight.These results suggest that optimization of the muscular cost function, rather than mechanical constraints, explain the seat-to-stand transition in cycling.

When compared to seated, the standing position allows the production of higher power outputs during intense cycling. We hypothesized that muscle coordination could explain this advantage. To test this hypothesis, we assessed muscle activity over a wide range of power outputs for both seated and standing cycling positions.Nine lower limb muscle activities from seventeen untrained volunteers were recorded during cycling sequences performed in the seated and the standing positions at power outputs ranging from ∼100 to 700W at 90±5 revolutions-per-minute (RPM).Integrated electromyography activity (iEMG), temporal patterns of the EMGs, and muscle synergies were analyzed.Muscle activity was underlain by four muscle synergies in both positions. Muscle synergies were similar in the two positions (Pearson's r=0.929±0.125). The activation patterns of knee and ankle extensor muscles and their associated synergies had different timings in the two positions (differences of ∼2-10% of cycle). No major timing changes were observed with power output (2% of cycle). Differences in iEMG between the two positions depended strongly on power output in all but the calf muscle (medial gastrocnemius).The number and structure of the muscle synergies play a minor role in the advantage of using the standing position when cycling at high power-outputs. However, the standing position is favorable in terms of iEMG at power outputs ≳500-600W due to position-dependent modulations of muscle activation levels. These data are important for understanding the determinants of the seat-stand transition in cycling.

The objective of this study is to clarify the functional roles of upper limb muscles during standing and seated cycling when power output increases. We investigated the activity of seven upper limb and trunk muscles using surface electromyography (EMG). Power outputs ranged from ~100-700 W with a pedalling frequency of 90 revolution per minute. Three-dimensional handle and pedal forces were simultaneously recorded. Using non-negative matrix factorisation, we extracted muscle synergies and we analysed the integrated EMG and EMG temporal patterns. Most of the muscles showed tonic activity that became more phasic as power output increased. Three muscle synergies were identified, associated with (i) torso stabilisation, (ii) compensation/generation of trunk accelerations and (iii) upper body weight support. Synergies were similar for seated and standing positions (Pearson's r 0.7), but synergy #2 (biceps brachii, deltoidus and brachioradialis) was shifted forward during the cycle (~7% of cycle). The activity levels of synergy #1 (latissimus dorsi and erector spinae) and synergy #2 increased markedly above ~500 W (i.e., ~+40-70% and +130-190%) and during periods corresponding to ipsi- and contralateral downstrokes, respectively. Our study results suggest that the upper limb and trunk muscles may play important roles in cycling when high power outputs are required.

The present study was designed to quantify the effect of power output on muscle coordination during rowing. Surface electromyographic (EMG) activity of 23 muscles and mechanical variables were recorded in eight untrained subjects and seven experienced rowers. Each subject was asked to perform three 2-min constant-load exercises performed at 60, 90 and 120% of the mean power output over a maximal 2,000-m event (denoted as P60, P90, and P120, respectively). A decomposition algorithm (nonnegative matrix factorization) was used to extract the muscle synergies that represent the global temporal and spatial organization of the motor output. The purpose of the study was to establish the link between the saddle vertical force and its determinants in order to establish the strategies that could trigger the sit-stand transition. We hypothesized that the minimum saddle vertical force would be a critical parameter influencing the sit-stand transition during cycling. Twenty-five non-cyclists were asked to pedal at six different power outputs from 20% (1.6 ± 0.3 W kg(-1)) to 120% (9.6 ± 1.6 W kg(-1)) of their spontaneous sit-stand transition power obtained at 90 rpm. Five 6-component sensors (saddle tube, pedals and handlebars) and a full-body kinematic reconstruction were used to provide the saddle vertical force and other force components (trunk inertial force, hips and shoulders reaction forces, and trunk weight) linked to the saddle vertical force. Minimum saddle vertical force linearly decreased with power output by 87% from a static position on the bicycle (5.30 ± 0.50 N kg(-1)) to power output=120% of the sit-stand transition power (0.68 ± 0.49 N kg(-1)). This decrease was mainly explained by the increase in instantaneous pedal forces from 2.84 ± 0.58 N kg(-1) to 6.57 ± 1.02 N kg(-1) from 20% to 120% of the power output corresponding to the sit-stand transition, causing an increase in hip vertical forces from -0.17 N kg(-1) to 3.29 N kg(-1). The emergence of strategies aiming at counteracting the elevation of the trunk (handlebars and pedals pulling) coincided with the spontaneous sit-stand transition power. The present data suggest that the large decrease in minimum saddle vertical force observed at high pedal reaction forces might trigger the sit-stand transition in cycling.

International audience; Objective: Large variations in maximal voluntary torque are reported in the literature during isometric plantarflexion contractions. We propose that these differences, which could reach 40 % across similar studies, could be explained by differences in the instructions provided, and notably by instructions as to favoring or not multi-joint contractions.Method: Sixteen participants were placed on an isokinetic ergometer in 3 different positions, supine, prone and seated, with the ankle in the neutral position, and instructed to create maximal force on the footplate by conforming to instructions that favored either isolated (ISOL) or multi-joint (ALL) isometric contractions. Torque, foot kinematics and the electromyographic activity of seven muscles of the lower limb have been recorded.Results: Joint torques were greater in ALL compared to ISOL (p < 0.05) with gains of 43.5 (25.4–170.6) %, 42.5 (1.4–194.6) % and 15.3 (9.3–71.9) % in the supine, prone and seated position, respectively [values are given as median (range)]. The results of this study suggested that forces created by muscles that do not span over the ankle joint significantly influenced the measured joint torque. Nevertheless, the observed gains in torque were associated with greater plantarflexor muscles activation, showing that the ISOL condition may have induced a form of inhibition of these muscles.Conclusions: The results of this study suggest that using isolated contractions, hence constrained testing protocols, cannot provide optimal conditions for MVC testing, notably for plantarflexor muscles, which seem to be extremely sensitive to such constrained conditions.

The purpose of the present study was to determine whether expertise in rowing is driven by a specific structure in muscular coordination. We compared seven experienced rowers and eight untrained (i.e., inexperienced) subjects during rowing on an ergometer. Both surface electromyography activity and mechanical patterns (forces exerted at the handle and the foot-stretcher) were recorded during a high intensity rowing exercise. A non-negative matrix factorization was applied to 23 electromyographic patterns to differentiate muscle synergies. Results showed that expertise was not associated with different dimensionality in the electromyographic data and that three muscle synergies were sufficient to explain the majority of the variance accounted for (i.e., >90% of the total variance) in the two populations. The synergies extracted were similar in the two populations, with identical functional roles. While the temporal organization of the propulsive synergies was very similar, slight differences were found in the composition of the muscle synergies (muscle synergy vectors) between the two populations. The results suggests that rowing expertise would not require the development of novel muscle synergies but would imply intrinsic synergies already used in different behaviors. Performance in rowing is more probably linked to adjustments in the mechanical output of the muscle synergies rather than to differences in the shape and timing of their activations.

SUMMARY Muscle fatigue is an exercise-induced reduction in the capability of a muscle to generate force. A possible strategy to counteract the effects of fatigue is to modify muscle coordination. We designed this study to quantify the effect of fatigue on muscle coordination during a cyclic exercise involving numerous muscles. Nine human subjects were tested during a constant-load rowing exercise (mean power output: 217.9±32.4 W) performed until task failure. The forces exerted at the handle and the foot-stretcher were measured continuously and were synchronized with surface electromyographic (EMG) signals measured in 23 muscles. In addition to a classical analysis of individual EMG data (EMG profile and EMG activity level), a non-negative matrix factorization algorithm was used to identify the muscle synergies at the start and the end of the test. Among the 23 muscles tested, 16 showed no change in their mean activity level across the rowing cycle, five (biceps femoris, gluteus maximus, semitendinosus, trapezius medius and vastus medialis) showed a significant increase and two (gastrocnemius lateralis and longissimus) showed a significant decrease. We found no change in the number of synergies during the fatiguing test, i.e. three synergies accounted for more than 90% of variance accounted for at the start (92.4±1.5%) and at the end (91.0±1.8%) of the exercise. Very slight modifications at the level of individual EMG profiles, synergy activation coefficients and muscle synergy vectors were observed. These results suggest that fatigue during a cyclic task preferentially induces an adaptation in muscle activity level rather than changes in the modular organization of the muscle coordination.

The purpose of the present study was to determine whether muscle synergies are constrained by changes in the mechanics of pedaling. The decomposition algorithm used to identify muscle synergies was based on two components: “muscle synergy vectors,” which represent the relative weighting of each muscle within each synergy, and “synergy activation coefficients,” which represent the relative contribution of muscle synergy to the overall muscle activity pattern. We hypothesized that muscle synergy vectors would remain fixed but that synergy activation coefficients could vary, resulting in observed variations in individual electromyographic (EMG) patterns. Eleven cyclists were tested during a submaximal pedaling exercise and five all-out sprints. The effects of torque, maximal torque-velocity combination, and posture were studied. First, muscle synergies were extracted from each pedaling exercise independently using non-negative matrix factorization. Then, to cross-validate the results, muscle synergies were extracted from the entire data pooled across all conditions, and muscle synergy vectors extracted from the submaximal exercise were used to reconstruct EMG patterns of the five all-out sprints. Whatever the mechanical constraints, three muscle synergies accounted for the majority of variability [mean variance accounted for (VAF) = 93.3 ± 1.6%, VAFmuscle> 82.5%] in the EMG signals of 11 lower limb muscles. In addition, there was a robust consistency in the muscle synergy vectors. This high similarity in the composition of the three extracted synergies was accompanied by slight adaptations in their activation coefficients in response to extreme changes in torque and posture. Thus, our results support the hypothesis that these muscle synergies reflect a neural control strategy, with only a few timing adjustments in their activation regarding the mechanical constraints.

International audience; Is interindividual variability of EMG patterns in trained cyclists related to different muscle synergies?. aim was to determine whether muscle synergies are similar across trained cyclists (and thus whether the same locomotor strategies for pedaling are used), despite interindividual variability of individual EMG patterns. Nine trained cyclists were tested during a constant-load pedal-ing exercise performed at 80% of maximal power. Surface EMG signals were measured in 10 lower limb muscles. A decomposition algorithm (nonnegative matrix factorization) was applied to a set of 40 consecutive pedaling cycles to differentiate muscle synergies. We selected the least number of synergies that provided 90% of the variance accounted for VAF. Using this criterion, three synergies were identified for all of the subjects, accounting for 93.5 2.0% of total VAF, with VAF for individual muscles ranging from 89.9 8.2% to 96.6 1.3%. Each of these synergies was quite similar across all subjects, with a high mean correlation coefficient for synergy activation coefficients (0.927 0.070, 0.930 0.052, and 0.877 0.110 for synergies 1–3, respectively) and muscle synergy vectors (0.873 0.120, 0.948 0.274, and 0.885 0.129 for synergies 1–3, respectively). Despite a large consistency across subjects in the weighting of several monoarticular muscles into muscle synergy vectors, we found larger interindividual variability for another monoarticular muscle (so-leus) and for biarticular muscles (rectus femoris, gastrocnemius lateralis, biceps femoris, and semimembranosus). This study demonstrated that pedaling is accomplished by the combination of the similar three muscle synergies among trained cyclists. The interindividual variability of EMG patterns observed during pedaling does not represent differences in the locomotor strategy for pedaling.
