IntroductionThis paper presents a comprehensive analysis of rapeseed fields mapping using Sentinel-1 (S1) time series data. We applied a time series alignment method to enhance the accuracy of rapeseed fields detection, even in scenarios where reference label data are limited or not available.MethodsTo this end, for five different study sites in France and North America, we first investigated the temporal transferability of the classifiers across several years within the same site, specifically using the Random Forest (RF) and InceptionTime algorithms. We then examined the spatiotemporal transferability of the classifiers when a classifier trained on one site and year was used to generate rapeseed fields map for another site and year. Next, we proposed an S1 time series alignment method to improve classification accuracy across sites and years by accounting for temporal shifts caused by differences in agricultural practices and climatic conditions between sites.Results and discussionThe main results demonstrated that rapeseed detection for 1 year, using training data from another year within the same site, achieved high accuracy, with F1 scores ranging from 85.5% to 97% for RF and from 88.2% to 98.3% for InceptionTime. When classifying using one-year training data from one site to classify another year in a different site, F1 scores varied between 48.8% and 97.7% for both RF and InceptionTime. Using a three year training dataset from one site to classify rapeseed fields in another site resulted in F1 scores ranging from 82.7% to 97.8% with RF and from 88.7% to 97.1% with InceptionTime. The proposed alignment method, designed to enhance classification using training and test data from different sites, improved F1 scores by up to 46.7%. These findings confirm the feasibility of mapping rapeseed with S1 images across various sites and years, highlighting its potential for both national and international agricultural monitoring initiatives.

Annual crop monitoring is a key parameter for managing agricultural strategies. Several studies have relied on remote sensing products such as the normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) as a vegetation dynamic metric. However, the dependence of optical data on weather conditions limits its availability. In this study, we reconstruct the NDVI time series of wheat fields using the moving averages of the Sentinel-1 normalized VH/VV cross-polarization ratio (IN) and the interferometric coherence in VV polarization over wheat selected fields in a semiarid site in Tunisia during two seasons, from 2018 to 2020. The crop cycle is divided into two periods: before and after the heading phase, which occurs in approximately the middle of March. Canopy height is a fundamental parameter for describing forest ecosystems. GEDI is a spaceborne LiDAR system that was designed to measure vegetation’s vertical structure at a global scale. This study evaluates the accuracy of GEDI-derived canopy height estimates over complex tropical forests in Mayotte Island (Overseas France) characterized by moderate height and biomass levels as well as a relatively steep terrain. The influence of GEDI signal and environmental parameters (canopy height, beam sensitivity and slope) on height estimates was assessed. Linear as well as non-linear approaches were implemented using the GEDI L2A product to estimate canopy height. Empirical models were trained on reference data derived from airborne LiDAR scanning. The results showed that using regression models built on multiple GEDI metrics yielded improved accuracies compared to a direct estimation from a single GEDI height metric. Canopy height, beam sensitivity and terrain slope were found to have a significant impact on the height metrics derived from GEDI waveforms. Conversely, both linear and non-linear regression models produced unbiased and stable estimates.

Eucalyptus plantations cover extensive areas in tropical regions and require accurate growth monitoring for efficient management. Traditional in-situ measurements, while necessary, are labor-intensive and impractical for large-scale assessments. Very high-resolution satellite stereo imagery is playing an increasingly important role in the estimation of fine Digital Surface Models (DSMs) across landscapes. However, its ability to estimate canopy height models (CHMs) has not been widely investigated. This study investigates the integration of high-resolution satellite stereo imagery from the Pleiades sensor with airborne or satellite Lidar data to estimate canopy height over eucalyptus plantations. Two study sites were selected in Brazil, representing flat and semi-mountainous topographies, Mato Grosso do Sul (MS) and Sao Paulo (SP), respectively. Digital Surface Models generated from Pleiades images (DSMP) were combined with Digital Terrain Models extracted from airborne Lidar data (DTMALS) to create Canopy Height Models (CHMALS). The evaluation of the CHMALS was based on two in situ canopy height measurements (Hmax and Hmean). For the SP site, the CHMALSmax, which is the average height of top 10% pixel values within each plot, correlated well with in situ Hmean, which is the average height of 10 central trees (r = 0.98), showing a bias of 1.4 m, RMSE of 3.1 m, and rRMSE of 18.5%. At the MS site, CHMALSmax demonstrated a bias of 1.9 m, RMSE of 2.3 m, rRMSE of 17.3%, and r correlation of 0.92. Despite a tendency to underestimate heights below 20 m in young tree plantations with open canopy, the results indicate reliable canopy height estimation. The study also investigates the potential of Global Ecosystem Dynamics Investigation (GEDI) elevation data as an alternative to DTMALS in absence of airborne Lidar data. The resulting CHMGedi is promising but slightly less accurate than Lidar-based CHMs. The best GEDI-based CHM (CHMGedimax) showed a bias and rRMSE of 1.3 m and 20.5% for the SP site, and 2.2 m and 24.9% for the MS site. These findings highlight the potential for integrating Pleiades and Lidar data for efficient and accurate canopy height monitoring in eucalyptus plantations.

Canopy height is a key indicator of tropical forest structure. In this study, we present a deep learning application to map canopy height in French Guiana using freely available multi-source satellite data (optical and radar) and complementary environmental information. The potential of a U-Net architecture trained on sparse and unevenly distributed GEDI data to generate a continuous canopy height map at a regional scale was assessed. The developed model, named CHNET, successfully produced a canopy height map of French Guiana at a 10-m spatial resolution, achieving relatively good accuracy compared to a validation airborne LiDAR scanning (ALS) dataset. The study demonstrates that relevant environmental descriptors, namely, height above nearest drainage (HAND) and forest landscape types (FLT), significantly contribute to the model’s accuracy, highlighting that these descriptors bring important information on canopy structural properties and that the CHNET framework can efficiently use this information to improve canopy height prediction. Another critical aspect highlighted is the necessity of addressing GEDI data inaccuracies and geolocation uncertainties, which is essential for any GEDI-based application. However, challenges remain, particularly in characterizing tall canopies, as our CHNET model exhibits a tendency to underestimate canopy heights greater than 35 m. A large part of this error arises from the use of GEDI measurements as reference, given the fact these data exhibit certain saturation in tropical biomes. Future improvements in the analysis of GEDI signal as well as the implementation of robust models are essential for better characterization of dense and tall tropical forest ecosystems.

Rivers play a crucial role in maintaining ecosystems and regional climates, while also providing essential water for irrigation and drinking. With the increasing impacts of climate change and human activities, rivers are becoming more prone to extreme events (droughts and floods) and induced erosion/deposition processes, making water-related risk management more challenging. The recent launch of the Surface Water and Ocean Topography (SWOT) mission, which focuses on continental surfaces with a spatial resolution of 100 m, has opened new avenues for applications in hydrology, hydrodynamics, and geomorphology. This study examines the initial results of the SWOT mission for sixteen rivers (ranging in width from 50 to 2,000 m) in the Cuvette Centrale of the Congo Basin, obtained in April 2023 during the fast sampling phase. The study assesses water surface elevations (WSE) and backscatter coefficient (σ0) measured from SWOT. Comparisons of WSE with data from other radar altimetry missions (Sentinel-3A and 3B, Jason-3, and Sentinel-6A) and GEDI data show high correlation coefficients of 0.977 (with a bias of 0.538 m) and 0.992 (with a bias of 1.011 m), respectively. The first maps of WSE slopes show realistic values, even in rivers less than 100 m wide, with steeper slopes upstream. Various WSE longitudinal profiles are retrieved with unprecedented spatial resolution, surpassing what other nadir altimetry missions have achieved. The σ0 values, between −10 and 20 dB on average, also appear consistent with other studies. These promising initial results pave the way for future studies on fluvial geomorphology dynamics and erosion/deposition processes from the new SWOT observations.

La télédétection, en offrant une couverture spatiale et temporelle étendue, permet une meilleure compréhension des besoins en eau des cultures. Actuellement, diverses variables liées à l'eau sont en libre accès, permettant de suivre les types de cultures, l'humidité des sols, et la dynamique des couverts végétaux. Cependant, les cartes annuelles des zones irriguées manquent encore, bien que des méthodes prometteuses soient en développement. Les estimations des dates d'irrigation et des volumes d'eau apportés restent également en phase de recherche. Les sections développées dans cet article décrivent des avancées sur ces points. Les images satellitaires, comme celles délivrées sur la plateforme THEIA, fournissent des mises à jour régulières des cartes des cultures, identifiant 24 classes en France et outre-mer. D'ici 2026, des projets visent à améliorer la fréquence et la précision de ces cartes. Pour les surfaces irriguées, l'utilisation d'indices de végétation et de données radar permet de distinguer les cultures irriguées des non-irriguées, avec une précision variable. Enfin, des approches combinant télédétection et modèles agro-hydrologiques montrent un potentiel significatif pour la gestion de l'eau agricole, malgré des défis persistants.

Cover crops are intermediary crops planted in between two main cash crops. They play a role in limiting nitrate leaching into groundwater. Currently, there is no database pertaining to cover crops despite their importance. The development period of cover crops is characterized by a dense cloud cover in Europe, which obstructs land surface monitoring using optical remote sensing. This study proposes a cover crops mapping method based on synthetic aperture radar remote sensing data from the Sentinel-1 (S1) constellation, which is unaffected by weather conditions. Our method is based on the dynamics of the S1 backscattering coefficient at the plot level. Using a decision tree, we mapped cover crops. In the decision tree algorithm, filters were added to eliminate other crops that temporally intersect with the cover crop, namely wheat and rapeseed. The proposed decision tree proved effective in detecting existing cover crop plots, as shown by the classification Recall values ranging between 83.5% and 95.0% and the high precision values ranging between 81.5% and 89.2%. Comparison with the Random Forest classifier showed that our proposed method yielded better and more consistent results. The main limitations in the classification approach were weak cover crops and residual vegetation. The results show that the developed approach, based on the S1 time series, is capable of remotely monitoring cover crops, giving managers and decision makers the ability to follow farmers’ work and ascertain if they are applying the recommended agricultural practices that promote sustainable land use and limit the contamination of groundwater.

Accurate crop type mapping using satellite imagery is crucial for food security, yet accurately distinguishing between crops with similar spectral signatures is challenging. This study assessed the performance of Sentinel-2 (S2) time series (spectral bands and vegetation indices), Sentinel-1 (S1) time series (backscattering coefficients and polarimetric parameters), alongside phenological features derived from both S1 and S2 time series (harmonic coefficients and median features), for classifying sunflower, soybean, and maize. Random Forest (RF), Multi-Layer Perceptron (MLP), and XGBoost classifiers were applied across various dataset configurations and train-test splits over two study sites and years in France. Additionally, the InceptionTime classifier, specifically designed for time series data, was tested exclusively with time series datasets to compare its performance against the three general machine learning algorithms (RF, XGBoost, and MLP). The results showed that XGBoost outperformed RF and MLP in classifying the three crops. The optimal dataset for mapping all three crops combined S1 backscattering coefficients with S2 vegetation indices, with comparable results between phenological features and time series data (mean F1 scores of 89.9% for sunflower, 76.6% for soybean, and 91.1% for maize). However, when using individual satellite sensors, S1 phenological features and time series outperformed S2 for sunflower, while S2 was superior for soybean and maize. Both phenological features and time series data produced close mean F1 scores across spatial, temporal, and spatiotemporal transfer scenarios, though median features dataset was the best choice for spatiotemporal transfer. Polarimetric S1 data did not yield effective results. The InceptionTime classifier further improved classification accuracy over XGBoost for all crops, with the degree of improvement varying by crop and dataset (the highest mean F1 scores of 90.6% for sunflower, 86.0% for soybean, and 93.5% for maize).

The radar-backscattering coefficient (σ0) depends on surface characteristics and instrumental parameters (wavelength, polarization, and incidence angle). For Sentinel-1 (S1), with incidence angles ranging from 25° to 45°, σ0 for similar targets typically differs by a few dB depending on their localization in the S1 swath. Overcoming this angular dependence is crucial for the operational applications of radar data. In theory, σ0 follows a cosine function with an exponent “N” that represents the degree of dependence between σ0 and the incidence angle. In order to reduce the effect of the incidence angle on σ0, dynamic N normalizations based on vegetation descriptors, NDVI and SAR Ratio (VV/VH), were applied and then compared to the results obtained with temporally fixed N normalizations. N was estimated at each S1 date during the period of the study for three main summer crops: corn, soybean, and sunflower. Analysis shows that the angular dependence of the S1 σ0 is similar for all three crops. N varies from 3.0 for low NDVI values to 2.0 for high NDVI values (stage of maximal vegetation development) in the VV polarization and from 2.5 to 1.5 for the VH polarization. Furthermore, N fluctuates strongly during the periods before plant emergence and after harvesting, due to variations in the soil roughness. Finally, the results demonstrated that the dynamic normalization of σ0 significantly reduces its angular dependence compared to fixed N (N = 1 and N = 2), with SAR ratio-based normalization performing similarly to NDVI-based normalization.

In intensively managed forests in Europe, where forests are divided into stands of small size and may show heterogeneity within stands, a high spatial resolution (10–––20 m) is needed to capture the differences in canopy height. In this work, we developed a deep learning model based on multi-sensor remote sensing measurements to create a high-resolution canopy height map over the “Landes de Gascogne” forest in France, a large maritime pine plantation of 13,000 km2 with flat terrain and intensive management. This area is characterized by even-aged and mono-specific stands, of a typical length of a few hundred meters, harvested every 35 to 50 years. Our deep learning U-Net model uses multi-band images from Sentinel-1 and Sentinel-2 with composite time averages as input to predict tree height derived from GEDI waveforms. The evaluation is performed with external validation data from forest inventory plots and a stereo 3D reconstruction model based on Skysat imagery available at specific locations. We trained seven different U-Net models based on combinations of Sentinel-1 and Sentinel-2 bands to evaluate the importance of each sensor in the dominant height retrieval. The model outputs allow us to generate a 10 m resolution canopy height map of the whole “Landes de Gascogne” forest area for 2020 with a mean absolute error of 2.02 m on the test dataset. The best predictions were obtained using all available bands from Sentinel-1 and Sentinel-2 but using only one satellite source also provided good predictions. For all validation datasets in coniferous forests, our model showed better metrics than previous canopy height models available in the same region.

In Europe, the heterogeneous features of crop systems with majority of small to medium sized agricultural holdings, and diversity of crop rotations, require high-resolution information to estimate cropland Net Ecosystem Exchange (NEE) and its two main components of Gross Ecosystem Exchange (GEE) and the Ecosystem Respiration (RECO). In this context, this paper presents an assimilation of high-resolution Sentinel-2 indices with eddy covariance measurements at selected European cropland flux sites in a new modified version of Vegetation Photosynthesis Respiration Model (VPRM). VRPM is a data-driven model simulating CO2 fluxes previously applied using satellite-derived vegetation indices from the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS). This study proposes a modification of the VPRM by including an explicit soil moisture stress function to the GEE and changing the equation of RECO. It also compares the model results driven by S2 indices instead of MODIS. The parameters of the VPRM model are calibrated using eddy-covariance data. All possible parameters optimization scenarios include the use of the initial version vs. the proposed modified VPRM, S2, or MODIS vegetation indices, and finally the choice of calibrating a single set of parameters against observations from all crop types, a set of parameters per crop type, or one set of parameters per site. Then, we focus the analysis on the improvement of the model with distinct parameters for different crop types vs. parameters optimized without distinction of crop types. Our main findings are: (1) the superiority of S2 vegetation indices over MODIS for cropland CO2 fluxes simulations, leading to a root mean squared error (RMSE) for NEE of less than 3.5 μmolm-2s-1 with S2 compared to 5 μmolm-2s-1 with MODIS (2) better performances of the modified VPRM version leading to a significant improvement of RECO, and (3) better performances when the parameters are optimized per crop-type instead of for all crop types lumped together, with lower RMSE and Akaike information criterion (AIC), despite a larger number of parameters. Associated with the availability of crop-type land cover maps, the use of S2 data and crop-type modified VPRM parameterization presented in this study, provide a step forward for upscaling cropland carbon fluxes at European scale.

This study aims to enhance rapeseed field detection accuracy using Sentinel-1 (S1) time series data and addressing challenges in collecting ground samples. The proposed solutions include model transfer between years without retraining and secondly, developing models with limited training samples. The research evaluates the performance of Random Forest (RF) and three deep learning (DL) algorithms: Long Short-Term Memory Fully Convolutional Network (LSTM-FCN), InceptionTime, and Multi-layer Perceptron (MLP). All four algorithms are evaluated initially with abundant ground samples and later with smaller sample sizes (100, 300, 500 and 1000 samples). Model transferability is tested across years. The impact of S1 image count on transfer accuracy is examined. Additionally, the effect of the phenological shift in the rapeseed growth cycle of 15 and 30 days between the training and test years was also investigated. The findings demonstrate strong model performance when training and testing occur in the same year (F1-score up to 95%). Within sample sizes of 300 to 1000, RF and InceptionTime stand out with high accuracy (F1-score>90%). When employing different years for training and testing with abundant sample sizes, all four algorithms correctly classified rapeseed (F1-score between 85.5% and 92.7%). In cases of a reduced number of images, the performance of InceptionTime and LSTM-FCN decreased (16% decrease in the F1-score), while RF and MLP maintain their performance. Notably, RF outperforms DL algorithms with an F1-score of 89.1%. In the context of a phenological shift, only InceptionTime and LSTM-FCN demonstrated strong performance (F1-score between 87.7% and 92.6%).

Nowadays, satellite image time series (SITS) are commonly employed to derive land-cover maps (LCM) to support decision makers in a variety of land management applications. In the most general workflow, the production of LCM strongly relies on available GT data to train supervised machine learning models. Unfortunately, these data are not always available due to time-consuming and costly field campaigns. In this scenario, the possibility to transfer a model learnt on a particular year (source domain) to a successive period of time (target domain), over the same study area, can save time and money. Such a kind of model transfer is challenging due to different acquisition conditions affecting each time period, thus resulting in possible distribution shifts between source and target domains. In the general field of machine learning, unsupervised domain adaptation (UDA) approaches are well suited to cope with the learning of models under distribution shifts between source and target domains. While widely explored in the general computer vision field, they are still underinvestigated for SITS-based land-cover mapping, especially for the temporal transfer scenario. With the aim to cope with this scenario in the context of SITS-based land-cover mapping, here we propose spatially aligned domain-adversarial neural network, a framework that combines both adversarial learning and self-training to transfer a classification model from a time period (year) to a successive one on a specific study area. Experimental assessment on a study area located in Burkina Faso characterized by challenging operational constraints demonstrates the significance of our proposal. The obtained results have shown that our proposal outperforms all the UDA competing methods by 7 to 12 points of F1-score across three different transfer tasks.

ABSTRACTSoil moisture estimation is a key component in hydrological processes and irrigation amounts' estimation. The synergetic use of optical and radar data has been proven to retrieve the surface soil moisture at a field scale using the Water Cloud Model (WCM). In this work, we evaluate the impact of staellite-derived vegetation descriptors to estimate the surface soil moisture. Therefore, we used the Sentinel-1 data to test the polarization ratio ([Formula: see text]) and the normalized polarization ratio (IN) and the frequently used optical Normalized Difference vegetation Index (NDVI) as vegetation descriptors. Synchronous with Sentinel-1 acquisitions, in situ soil moisture were collected over wheat fields in the Kairouan plain in the center of Tunisia. To avoid the bare soil roughness effect and the radar signal saturation in dense vegetation context, we considered the data where the NDVI values vary between 0.25 and 0.7. The soil moisture inversion using the WCM and NDVI as a vegetation descriptor was characterized by an RMSE value of 5.6 vol.%. A relatively close performance was obtained using IN and ([Formula: see text]) with RMSE under 7. 5 vol.%. The results revealed the consistency of the radar-derived data in describing the vegetation for the retrieval of soil moisture.

This study investigates the potential of Sentinel-1 (S1) multi-temporal data for the early-season mapping of the rapeseed crop. Additionally, we explore the effectiveness of limiting the portion of a considered time series to map rapeseed fields. To this end, we conducted a quantitative analysis to assess several temporal windows (periods) spanning different phases of the rapeseed phenological cycle in the following two scenarios relating to the availability or constraints of providing ground samples for different years: (i) involving the same year for both training and the test, assuming the availability of ground samples for each year; and (ii) evaluating the temporal transferability of the classifier, considering the constraints of ground sampling. We employed two different classification methods that are renowned for their high performance in land cover mapping: the widely adopted random forest (RF) approach and a deep learning-based convolutional neural network, specifically the InceptionTime algorithm. To assess the classification outcomes, four evaluation metrics (recall, precision, F1 score, and Kappa) were employed. Using S1 time series data covering the entire rapeseed growth cycle, the tested algorithms achieved F1 scores close to 95% on same-year training and testing, and 92.0% when different years were used, both algorithms demonstrated robust performance. For early rapeseed detection within a two-month window post-sowing, RF and InceptionTime achieved F1 scores of 67.5% and 77.2%, respectively, and 79.8% and 88.9% when extended to six months. However, in the context of temporal transferability, both classifiers exhibited mean F1 scores below 50%. Notably, a 5-month time series, covering key growth stages such as stem elongation, inflorescence emergence, and fruit development, yielded a mean F1 score close to 95% for both algorithms when trained and tested in the same year. In the temporal transferability scenario, RF and InceptionTime achieved mean F1 scores of 92.0% and 90.0%, respectively, using a 5-month time series. Our findings underscore the importance of a concise S1 time series for effective rapeseed mapping, offering advantages in data storage and processing time. Overall, the study establishes the robustness of RF and InceptionTime in rapeseed detection scenarios, providing valuable insights for agricultural applications.

Abstract The present paper aims to quantify how human-made changes in the upstream exacerbate climate change impacts on water birds’ habitat in the downstream. To reduce climate change effects and design adaptation policies, it is important to identify whether human activities understate or overstate the effects of climate change in a region on its inhabitants. This paper also shows how human activities may magnify climate change impacts both locally and regionally. Land-use/land-cover change as the important sign of human-made destruction in an ecosystem was detected in the upstream of the Helmand basin over 40 years. Owing to conflicts in Afghanistan, studies on this basin are rare. The water bird’s habitat suitability maps during the study period were created using the maximum entropy model and the multi-criteria evaluation method. The post-classification method was applied to show the land-use/land-cover change over 40 years. These results were compared to the area of suitable habitat for water birds. The findings of these analyses indicated that the irrigated farming was expanded in the upstream despite climate change and water limitation, while the water birds’ habitat in the downstream was declined. These results revealed that the unsustainable pattern of farming and blocking water behind dams in the upstream exacerbated the negative effects of climate change on water birds’ habitat in the downstream. The significance of this study is to demonstrate the role of human in exacerbating climate change impacts both locally and regionally.

Observed by satellites for more than a decade, surface soil moisture (SSM) is an essential component of the Earth system. Today, with the Sentinel missions, SSM can be derived at a sub-kilometer spatial resolution. In this work, aggregated 1 km × 1 km SSM observations combining Sentinel-1 (S1) and Sentinel-2 (S2) data are assimilated for the first time into the Interactions between Soil, Biosphere, and Atmosphere (ISBA) land surface model using the global Land Data Assimilation System (LDAS-Monde) tool of Meteo-France. The ISBA simulations are driven by atmospheric variables from the Application of Research to Operations at Mesoscale (AROME) numerical weather prediction model for the period 2017–2019 for two regions in Southern France, Toulouse and Montpellier, and for the Salamanca region in Spain. The S1 SSM shows a good agreement with in situ SSM observations. The S1 SSM is assimilated either alone or together with leaf area index (LAI) observations from the PROBA-V satellite. The assimilation of S1 SSM alone has a small impact on the simulated root zone soil moisture. On the other hand, a marked impact of the assimilation is observed over agricultural areas when LAI is assimilated, and the impact is larger when S1 SSM and LAI are assimilated together.

This study aimed to develop an approach using Sentinel-1 synthetic aperture radar (SAR) data and the Optirrig crop growth and irrigation model to detect irrigation dates and amounts for maize crops in the Occitanie region, Southern France. The surface soil moisture (SSM) derived from SAR data was analyzed for changes indicating irrigation events at the plot scale in four reference plots located in Montpellier (P1) and Tarbes (P2, P3, and P4). As rain most likely covers several square kilometers, while irrigation is decided at the plot scale, a difference between SSM signals at the grid scale (10 km × 10 km) and plot scale is a clear indication of a recent irrigation event. Its date and amount are then sought by forcing irrigation dates and amounts in Optirrig, selecting the most relevant (date, amount) combination from an appropriate criterion. As the observed SSM values hold for a depth of a few centimeters, while the modeled SSM values hold for exactly 10 cm, the best irrigation combination is the one that gives similar relative changes in SSM values rather than similar SSM values. The irrigation dates were detected with an overall accuracy (recall) of 86.2% and a precision of 85.7%, and thus, with relatively low numbers of missed or false irrigation detections, respectively. The performance of the method in detecting seasonal irrigation amounts varied with climatic conditions. For the P1 plot in the semi-arid climate of Montpellier, the mean absolute error percentage (MAE%) was 16.4%, showing a higher efficiency when compared with the humid climate of Tarbes (P2, P3, and P4 plots), where a higher MAE% of 50% was recorded, indicating a larger discrepancy between the detected and actual irrigation amounts. The limitations of the proposed method can be attributed to the characteristics of the Sentinel-1 constellation, including its 6-day revisit time and signal penetration challenges in dense maize cover, as well as the mismatch between the parameterization of Optirrig for SSM simulations and the actual irrigation practices followed by farmers. Despite these weaknesses, the results demonstrated the relevance of combining Optirrig and S1 SAR-derived SSM data for field-scale detection of irrigation dates and, potentially, irrigation amounts.

Understanding spatial and temporal variability in soil organic carbon (SOC) content helps simultaneously assess soil fertility and several parameters that are strongly associated with it, such as structural stability, nutrient cycling, biological activity, and soil aeration. Therefore, it appears necessary to monitor SOC regularly and investigate rapid, non-destructive, and cost-effective approaches for doing so, such as proximal and remote sensing. To increase the accuracy of predictions of SOC content, this study evaluated combining remote sensing time series with laboratory spectral measurements using machine and deep-learning algorithms. Partial least squares (PLS) regression, random forest (RF), and deep neural network (DNN) models were developed using Sentinel-2 (S2) time series of 58 sampling points of bare soil and according to three approaches. In the first approach, only S2 bands were used to calibrate and compare the performance of the models. In the second, S2 indices, Sentinel-1 (S1) indices, and S1 soil moisture were added separately during model calibration to evaluate their effects individually and then together. In the third, we added the laboratory indices incrementally and tested their influence on model accuracy. Using only S2 bands, the DNN model outperformed the PLS and RF models (ratio of performance to the interquartile distance RPIQ = 0.79, 1.36 and 1.67, respectively). Additional information improved performances only for model calibration, with S1 soil moisture yielding the most stable improvement among three iterations. Including equivalent indices of the S2 indices calculated using soil spectra obtained under laboratory conditions improved prediction of SOC, and the use of only two indices achieved good validation performances for the RF and DNN models (mean RPIQ = 2.01 and 1.77, respectively).

Soil moisture maps are essential for hydrological, agricultural and risk assessment applications. To best meet these requirements, it is essential to develop soil moisture products at high spatial resolution, which is now made possible using the free Sentinel-1 (S1) SAR (Synthetic Aperture Radar) data. Some soil moisture retrieval techniques using S1 data relied on the use of a priori weather information in order to increase the precision of soil moisture estimates, which required access to a weather-forecasting framework. This paper presents an improved and fully autonomous solution for high-resolution soil moisture mapping in bare agricultural areas. The proposed solution derives a priori weather information directly from the original Sentinel images, thus bypassing the need for a weather forecasting framework. For soil moisture estimation, the neural network technique was implemented to ensure the optimum integration of radar information. The neural networks were trained using synthetic data generated by the modified Integral Equation Model (IEM) model and validated on real data from two study sites in France and Tunisia. The main findings showed that the use of a radar signal averaged over grids of a few km2 in addition to radar signal at plot scale instead of a priori weather information provides good soil moisture estimations. The accuracy is even slightly better compared to the accuracy obtained using a priori weather information.

A new approach based on the change detection technique is proposed for the estimation of surface soil moisture (SSM) from a time series of radar measurements. A new index of reflectivity (IR) is defined that uses radar signals and Fresnel coefficients. This index is equal to 0 in the case of the smallest value of the Fresnel coefficient, corresponding to the driest conditions and the weakest radar signal, and is equal to 1 for the highest value of the Fresnel coefficient, corresponding to the wettest soil conditions and the strongest radar signal. The integrated equation model is used to simulate the behavior of radar signals as a function of soil moisture and roughness. This approach validates the greater usefulness of the IR compared with that of the commonly used index of SSM (ISSM), which assumes that the SSM varies linearly as a function of radar signal strength. The IR-based approach was tested using Sentinel-1 radar data recorded over three regions: Banizombou (Niger), Merguellil (Tunisia), and Occitania (France). The IR approach was found to perform better for the estimation of SSM than the ISSM approach based on comparisons with ground measurements over bare soils.

Soils are at the crossroads of many existential issues that humanity is currently facing. Soils are a finite resource that is under threat, mainly due to human pressure. There is an urgent need to map and monitor them at field, regional, and global scales in order to improve their management and prevent their degradation. This remains a challenge due to the high and often complex spatial variability inherent to soils. Over the last four decades, major research efforts in the field of pedometrics have led to the development of methods allowing to capture the complex nature of soils. As a result, digital soil mapping (DSM) approaches have been developed for quantifying soils in space and time. DSM and monitoring have become operational thanks to the harmonization of soil databases, advances in spatial modeling and machine learning, and the increasing availability of spatiotemporal covariates, including the exponential increase in freely available remote sensing (RS) data. The latter boosted research in DSM, allowing the mapping of soils at high resolution and assessing the changes through time. We present a review of the main contributions and developments of French (inter)national research, which has a long history in both RS and DSM. Thanks to the French SPOT satellite constellation that started in the early 1980s, the French RS and soil research communities have pioneered DSM using remote sensing. This review describes the data, tools, and methods using RS imagery to support the spatial predictions of a wide range of soil properties and discusses their pros and cons. The review demonstrates that RS data are frequently used in soil mapping (i) by considering them as a substitute for analytical measurements, or (ii) by considering them as covariates related to the controlling factors of soil formation and evolution. It further highlights the great potential of RS imagery to improve DSM, and provides an overview of the main challenges and prospects related to digital soil mapping and future sensors. This opens up broad prospects for the use of RS for DSM and natural resource monitoring.

Satellite-based soil organic carbon content (SOC) mapping over wide regions is generally hampered by the low soil sampling density and the diversity of soil sampling periods. Some unfavorable topsoil conditions, such as high moisture, rugosity, the presence of crop residues, the limited amplitude of SOC values and the limited area of bare soil when a single image is used, are also among the influencing factors. To generate a reliable SOC map, this study addresses the use of Sentinel-2 (S2) temporal mosaics of bare soil (S2Bsoil) over 6 years jointly with soil moisture products (SMPs) derived from Sentinel 1 and 2 images, SOC measurement data and other environmental covariates derived from digital elevation models, lithology maps and airborne gamma-ray data. In this study, we explore (i) the dates and periods that are preferable to construct temporal mosaics of bare soils while accounting for soil moisture and soil management; (ii) which set of covariates is more relevant to explain the SOC variability. From four sets of covariates, the best contributing set was selected, and the median SOC content along with uncertainty at 90% prediction intervals were mapped at a 25-m resolution from quantile regression forest models. The accuracy of predictions was assessed by 10-fold cross-validation, repeated five times. The models using all the covariates had the best model performance. Airborne gamma-ray thorium, slope and S2 bands (e.g., bands 6, 7, 8, 8a) and indices (e.g., calcareous sedimentary rocks, “calcl”) from the “late winter–spring” time series were the most important covariates in this model. Our results also indicated the important role of neighboring topographic distances and oblique geographic coordinates between remote sensing data and parent material. These data contributed not only to optimizing SOC mapping performance but also provided information related to long-range gradients of SOC spatial variability, which makes sense from a pedological point of view.

Climate change will exacerbate environmental threats, which will, in turn, affect agricultural production patterns. This study addresses the feasibility of using Sentinel-2 (S2) optical remote sensing data to map the consequences of heatwaves on vineyard plots. The proposed method to map damaged and undamaged vineyards is based on the use of an inter-annual (C1) and an intra-annual (C2) criterion derived from the Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) calculated on S2 data. While the inter-annual criterion compares the NDVI of the heatwave year to the average NDVI of the previous years with no heatwave, the intra-annual criterion compares the NDVI values before and after the heatwave in the same year. Predictions from either criteria or both combined were tested against two datasets collected during two field surveys performed in 2020 and 2021, with different ways of recording the damage caused on the grapevine by the 2019 heatwave in southeastern France. Results showed that within the reference vineyard plots with heat damage, 46 %, 62 % and 40 % of the S2 pixels were correctly predicted as damaged using C1, C2 and their combination, respectively. Within undamaged plots, 91 %, 88 % and 99 % of the S2 pixels were correctly predicted as undamaged using C1, C2 and the combination, respectively. Results also showed that only severe leaf damage was detected using the S2 NDVI. The combination of C1 and C2 provides the most accurate detection of heatwave consequences on vineyards.

The GEDI LiDAR system was specifically designed to detect vegetation structure and has proven to be a suitable tool for estimating forest biophysical parameters, especially canopy height, at a global scale. This study compares the GEDI relative height metric (RH100) over different forest types, especially deciduous broadleaf and evergreen coniferous located in Thuringia, Germany, to understand how the forest structural differences affect the GEDI height estimation. A canopy height model that was produced using digital terrain and surface models (DTM and DSM) derived from airborne laser scanning data is used as the reference data. Based on the result, GEDI canopy height over needleleaf forest is slightly more accurate (RMSE = 6.61 m) than that over broadleaf (RMSE = 8.30 m) and mixed (RMSE = 7.94 m) forest. Evaluation of the GEDI acquisition parameters shows that differences in beam type, sensitivity, and acquisition time do not significantly affect the accuracy of canopy heights, especially over needleleaf forests. Considering foliage condition impacts on canopy height estimation, the contrasting result is observed in the broadleaf and needleleaf forests. The GEDI dataset acquired during the winter when deciduous species shed their leaves (the so-called leaf-off dataset), outperforms the leaf-on dataset in the broadleaf forest but shows less accurate results for the needleleaf forest. Considering the effect of the plant area index (PAI) on the accuracy of the GEDI canopy height, the GEDI dataset is divided into two sets with low and high PAI values with a threshold of median PAI = 2. The results show that the low PAI dataset (median PAI < 2) corresponds to the non-growing season (autumn and winter) in the broadleaf forest. The slightly better performance of GEDI using the non-growing dataset (RMSE = 7.40 m) compared to the growing dataset (RMSE = 8.44 m) in the deciduous broadleaf forest and vice versa, the slightly better result using the growing dataset (RMSE = 6.38 m) compared to the non-growing dataset (RMSE = 7.24 m) in the evergreen needleleaf forest is in line with the results using the leaf-off/leaf-on season dataset. Although a slight improvement in canopy height estimation was observed using either the leaf-off or non-growing season dataset for broadleaf forest, and either the leaf-on or growing season dataset for needleleaf forest, the approach of filtering GEDI data based on such seasonal acquisition time is recommended when retrieving canopy height over pure stands of broadleaf or needleleaf species, and the sufficient dataset is available.

Estimating consistent large-scale tropical forest height using remote sensing is essential for understanding forest-related carbon cycles. The Global Ecosystem Dynamics Investigation (GEDI) light detection and ranging (LiDAR) instrument employed on the International Space Station has collected unique vegetation structure data since April 2019. Our study shows the potential value of using remote-sensing (RS) data (i.e., optical Sentinel-2, radar Sentinel-1, and radar PALSAR-2) to extrapolate GEDI footprint-level forest canopy height model (CHM) measurements. We show that selected RS features can estimate vegetation heights with high precision by analyzing RS data, spaceborne GEDI LiDAR, and airborne LiDAR at four tropical forest sites in South America and Africa. We found that the GEDI relative height (RH) metric is the best at 98% (RH98), filtered by full-power shots with a sensitivity greater than 98%. We found that the optical Sentinel-2 indices are dominant with respect to radar from 77 possible features. We proposed the nine essential optical Sentinel-2 and the radar cross-polarization HV PALSAR-2 features in CHM estimation. Using only ten optimal indices for the regression problems can avoid unimportant features and reduce the computational effort. The predicted CHM was compared to the available airborne LiDAR data, resulting in an error of around 5 m. Finally, we tested cross-validation error values between South America and Africa, including around 40% from validation data in training to obtain a similar performance. We recommend that GEDI data be extracted from all continents to maintain consistent performance on a global scale. Combining GEDI and RS data is a promising method to advance our capability in mapping CHM values.

In the global change context, an efficient management of the available resources has become one of the most important topics particularly for the sustainable crop development. Many questions concern the evolution of the rice farming systems in Camargue in Southeastern France, which play a crucial role in controlling the soil salinity. Their surface area significantly decreased from 20 000 ha in 2010 to 14 000 ha in 2014. The arrival of the new Sentinel satellites makes it possible to evaluate these crop evolutions. The objectives of this study were to propose operational methodologies to accurately assess the surface areas of the main crops, rice, wheat, and grassland, from classifications based on multispectral data; map agricultural practices (sowing and harvest residue burning); and elaborate a farm typology based on variables computed from remote sensing data to better understand the farming strategies. Dense time series of Sentinel images acquired at high spatial resolution (10 m) were analyzed for 2016 and 2017. A satisfactory accuracy was obtained for land use classification with 88% of correctly classified fields. The accuracy obtained for the estimation of the sowing date varied according to the studied year from 8 to 12 days, and burned areas were correctly identified (80%). The farm typology allowed to cluster farms at the territory level.

LiDAR technology has been widely used to characterize structural parameters of forest ecosystems, which in turn are valuable information for forest monitoring. GEDI is a spaceborne LiDAR system specifically designed to measure vegetation’s vertical structure, and it has been acquiring waveforms on a global scale since April 2019. In particular, canopy height is an important descriptor of forest ecosystems, as it allows for quantifying biomass and other inventory information. This paper analyzes the accuracy of canopy height estimates from GEDI data over tropical forests in French Guiana and Gabon. The influence of various signal acquisition and processing parameters is assessed to highlight how they impact the estimation of canopy heights. Canopy height models derived from airborne LiDAR data are used as reference heights. Several linear and non-linear approaches are tested given the richness of the available GEDI information. The results show that the use of regression models built on multiple GEDI metrics allows for reaching improved accuracies compared to a direct estimation from a single GEDI height metric. In a notable way, random forest improves the canopy height estimation accuracy by almost 80% (in terms of RMSE) compared to the use of rh_95 as a direct proxy of canopy height. Additionally, convolutional neural networks calibrated on GEDI waveforms exhibit similar results to the ones of other regression models. Beam type as well as beam sensitivity, which are related to laser penetration, appear as parameters of major influence on the data derived from GEDI waveforms and used as input for canopy height estimation. Therefore, we recommend the use of only power and high-sensitivity beams when sufficient data are available. Finally, we note that regression models trained on reference data can be transferred across study sites that share identical environmental conditions.

Irrigation monitoring is of great importance in agricultural water management to guarantee better water use efficiency, especially under changing climatic conditions and water scarcity. This study presents a detailed assessment of the potential of the Sentinel-1 (S1) Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) data to detect irrigation events at the plot scale. The potential of the S1 data to detect the irrigation events was carried out using the Irrigation Event Detection Model (IEDM) over semi-arid and temperate oceanic climates in five study sites in south Europe and the Middle East. The IEDM is a decision tree model initially developed to detect irrigation events using the change detection algorithm applied to the S1 time series data. For each study site and at each agricultural plot, all available S1 images during the period of irrigation were used to construct an S1 time series and apply the IEDM. Different types of major summer irrigated crops were analyzed in this study, including Maize, Soybean, Sorghum and Potato, mainly with the sprinkler irrigation technique. The irrigation detection accuracy was evaluated using S1 images and the IEDM against the climatic condition of the studied area, the vegetation development (by means of the normalized difference vegetation index, NDVI) and the revisit time of the S1 sensor. The main results showed generally good overall accuracy for irrigation detection using the S1 data, reaching 67% for all studied sites together. This accuracy varied according to the climatic conditions of the studied area, with the highest accuracy for semi-arid areas and lowest for temperate areas. The analysis of the irrigation detection as a function of the crop type showed that the accuracy of irrigation detection decreases as the vegetation becomes well developed. The main findings demonstrated that the density of the available S1 images in the S1 time series over a given area affects the irrigation detection accuracy, especially for temperate areas. In temperate areas the irrigation detection accuracy decreased from 70% when 15 to 20 S1 images were available per month to reach less than 56% when less than 10 S1 images per month were available over the study sites.

Vegetation optical depth (VOD), as a microwave-based estimate of vegetation water and biomass content, is increasingly used to study the impact of global climate and environmental changes on vegetation. However, current global operational VOD products have a coarse spatial resolution (~25 km), which limits their use for agriculture management and vegetation dynamics monitoring at regional scales (1–5 km). This study aims to retrieve high-resolution VOD from the C-band Sentinel-1 backscatter data over a grassland of the Heihe River Basin in northwestern China. The proposed approach used an analytical solution of a simplified Water Cloud Model (WCM), constrained by given soil moisture estimates, to invert VOD over grassland with 1 km spatial resolution during the 2018–2020 period. Our results showed that the VOD estimates exhibited large spatial variability and strong seasonal variations. Furthermore, the dynamics of VOD estimates agreed well with optical vegetation indices, i.e., the mean temporal correlations with normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI), enhanced vegetation index (EVI), and leaf area index (LAI) were 0.76, 0.75, and 0.75, respectively, suggesting that the VOD retrievals could precisely capture the dynamics of grassland.

The spatial assessment of soil organic carbon (SOC) is a major environmental challenge, notably for evaluating soil carbon stocks. Recent works have shown the capability of Sentinel-2 to predict SOC content over temperate agroecosystems characterized with annual crops. However, because spectral models are only applicable on bare soils, the mapping of SOC is often obtained on limited areas. A possible improvement for increasing the number of pixels on which SOC can be retrieved by inverting bare soil reflectance spectra, consists of using optical images acquired at several dates. This study compares different approaches of Sentinel–2 images temporal mosaicking to produce a composite multi-date bare soil image for predicting SOC content over agricultural topsoils. A first approach for temporal mosaicking was based on a per-pixel selection and was driven by soil surface characteristics: bare soil or dry bare soil with/without removing dry vegetation. A second approach for creating composite images was based on a per-date selection and driven either by the models performance from single-date, or by average soil surface indicators of bare soil or dry bare soil. To characterize soil surface, Sentinel-1 (S1)-derived soil moisture and/or spectral indices such as normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI), Normalized Burn Ratio 2 (NBR2), bare soil index (BSI) and a soil surface moisture index (S2WI) were used either separately or in combination. This study highlighted the following results: i) none of the temporal mosaic images improved model performance for SOC prediction compared to the best single-date image; ii) of the per-pixel approaches, temporal mosaics driven by the S1-derived moisture content, and to a lesser extent, by NBR2 index, outperformed the mosaic driven by the BSI index but they did not increase the bare soil area predicted; iii) of the per-date approaches, the best trade-off between predicted area and model performance was achieved from the temporal mosaic driven by the S1-derived moisture content (R2 ~ 0.5, RPD ~ 1.4, RMSE ~ 3.7 g.kg-1) which enabled to more than double (*2.44) the predicted area. This study suggests that a number of bare soil mosaics based on several indicators (moisture, bare soil, roughness…), preferably in combination, might maintain acceptable accuracies for SOC prediction whilst extending over larger areas than single-date images.

The reliability of crop-growth modelling is related to the accuracy of the information used to describe the agricultural growing phases. A proper knowledge of sowing periods has a significant impact on the effectiveness of any analysis based on modeled crop growth. In this work, an estimation of maize actual sowing periods for year 2019 is presented, combining the optical and radar information from Sentinel-1 and Sentinel-2. The crop classification was conducted according to the information provided by local public authorities over an area of 30 km × 30 km, and 1154 maize fields were considered within the analysis. The combined use of NDVI and radar time series enabled a high-resolution assessment of sowing periods and the description of maize emergence through the soil, by detecting changes in the ground surface geometry. A radar-based index was introduced to detect the periods when plants emerge through the soil, and the sowing periods were retrieved considering the thermal energy needed by seeds to germinate and the daily temperatures before the emergence. Results show that 52% of maize hectares were sowed in late April, while about 30% were sowed during the second half of May. Sentinel-1 appears more suitable to describe the late growing phase of maize, since the radar backscattering is sensitive to the dry biomass of plants while the NDVI decreases because of the chromatic change of leaves. This study highlights the potential of synergy between remote sensing sources for agricultural management policies and improving the accuracy of crop-related modelling.

The Global Ecosystem Dynamics Investigation (GEDI), specifically designed to measure vertical forest structures, has acquired, since April 2019, more than 35 billion waveforms of Earth’s surface on a nearly global scale. GEDI is equipped with 3 identical 1064 nm lasers with a power of 10 mJ per shot, where 1 laser is split into 2 lasers, resulting in two 5 mJ coverage lasers and two 10 mJ full-power lasers. In this study, we evaluate the potential of GEDI’s four lasers to penetrate through canopies and detect the ground, and their capabilities to detect the top of the canopies over a tropical forest (in French Guiana) characterized by a dense canopy cover and tall trees. The accurate detection of both of these surfaces is the first step in characterizing vertical forest structures. The SRTM Digital Elevation Model (DEM) is used as a reference point for elevations while a canopy height model (CHM), derived from airborne and spaceborne LiDAR data, is used as a reference for canopy heights. In addition, the ground and canopy-top elevations estimated from NASA’s Land, Vegetation, and Ice Sensor (LVIS, 1064 nm full-waveform LiDAR, 5 mJ per shot, ~8 km altitude) are used as a benchmark for comparison with GEDI’s lasers. Results indicate that GEDI’s coverage and full-power lasers, even after the application of a preliminary filter that removes around 50% of acquisitions, tend to underestimate tree heights in densely vegetated, tall forests. Moreover, GEDI’s coverage lasers also exhibited a lower level of performance in comparison to both the full-power lasers and LVIS. Overall, the average estimated maximum canopy heights (RH100) for a CHM greater than 30 m was 24.4 m with the coverage lasers, 32.1 m with the full-power lasers, and 36.7 m with LVIS. The analysis of shots with high-beam sensitivity (sensitivity ≥ 98%) showed that they tend to have a better probability of reaching the ground and have better detection of canopy tops for both GEDI laser types. Nonetheless, GEDI’s coverage lasers still showed an underestimation of canopy heights with an average RH100 of 29.8 m, while for GEDI’s full-power lasers and LVIS, the average RH100 was 35.2 m and 37.7 m, respectively. Finally, the assessment of the acquisition time on the detection of the ground return and the top of the canopies showed that, for the coverage lasers, solar noise could affect the detection of the ground return as acquisitions made during early mornings or late afternoons have more penetration than shots acquired between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m. The effect of acquisition time on the detection of the tops of canopies showed that solar noise slightly affected the coverage lasers. Regarding the full-power lasers, the acquisition time of the shots seem to affect neither the penetration of the lasers, nor the detection of the tops of canopies.

Comprehensive knowledge about irrigation timing is crucial for water resource management. This paper presents a comparative analysis between C- and L-band Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) data for the detection of irrigation events. The analysis was performed using C-band time series data derived from the Sentinel-1 (S1) satellite and two L-band images from the PALSAR-2 (ALOS-2) sensor acquired over irrigated grassland plots in the Crau plain of southeast France. The S1 C-band time series was first analyzed as a function of rainfall and irrigation events. The backscattering coefficients in both the L and C bands were then compared to the time difference between the date of the acquired SAR image and the date of the last irrigation event occurring before the SAR acquisition (Δt). Sensitivity analysis was performed for 2 classes of the Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI ≤0.7 and NDVI >0.7). The main results showed that when the vegetation is moderately developed (NDVI ≤0.7), the C-band temporal variation remains sensitive to the soil moisture dynamics and the irrigation events could be detected. The C-VV signal decreases due to the drying out of the soil when the time difference between the S1 image and irrigation event increases. For well-developed vegetation cover (NDVI >0.7), the C-band sensitivity to irrigation events becomes dependent on the crop type. For well-developed Gramineae grass with longs stalks and seedheads, the C band shows no correlation with Δt due to the absence of the soil contribution in the backscattered signal, contrary to the legume grass type, where the C band shows a good correspondence between C-VV and Δt for NDVI > 0.7. In contrast, analysis of the L-band backscattering coefficient shows that the L band remains sensitive to the soil moisture regardless of the vegetation cover development and the vegetation characteristics, thus being more suitable for irrigation detection than the C band. The L-HH signal over Gramineae grass or legume grass types shows the same decreasing pattern with the increase in Δt, regardless of the NDVI-values, presenting a decrease in soil moisture with time and thus high sensitivity of the radar signal to soil parameters. Finally, the co-polarizations for both the C and L bands (L-HH and C-VV) tend to be more adequate for irrigation detection than the HV cross-polarization, as they show higher sensitivity to soil moisture values.

The Global Ecosystem Dynamics Investigation (GEDI) LiDAR on the International Space Station has acquired more than 35 billion shots globally in the period between April 2019 and August 2021. The acquired shots could offer a significant database for the measure and monitoring of inland water levels over the Earth’s surface. Nonetheless, previous and current studies have shown that the provided GEDI elevation estimates are significantly less accurate than any available radar or LiDAR altimeter. Indeed, our analysis of GEDI’s altimetric capabilities to retrieve water levels over the five North American Great Lakes presented estimates with a bias that ranged between 0.26 and 0.35 m and a root mean squared error (RMSE) ranging between 0.54 and 0.68 m. Therefore, our objective in this study is to post-process the original GEDI water level estimates from an error model taking instrumental, atmospheric, and lakes surface state factors as proxies, which affect the physical shape of the waveforms, hence introducing uncertainties on the elevation estimates. The first tested model, namely a random forest regressor (RFICW) with the instrumental, atmospheric, and water surface state factors as inputs, was validated temporally (trained on a given year and validated on another) and spatially (trained on a given lake and validated on the remaining four). The results showed a significant decrease in elevation estimation errors both temporally and spatially. The temporally validated models showed an RMSE on the corrected elevation estimates of 0.18 m. Concerning the spatially validated model, the results varied based on the lake data used for training. Indeed, the most accurate spatially validated model showed an RMSE of 0.17 m, while the least accurate model showed an RMSE of 0.26 m. Finally, given that an elevation correction model using all the factors (instrumental, atmospheric, and water surface state factors) presents a best-case scenario, as water surface state factors are only available over a selected number of lakes globally, three additional models based on random forest were tested. The first, RFI, uses only instrumental factors as correction factors, RFIC uses both instrumental and atmospheric factors, while the third, RFIW, uses instrumental and water surface state factors. The temporal validation of these models showed that the model using instrumental factors, while less accurate than the remaining two models, was capable of correcting the original GEDI elevation estimates by a factor of two across the five lakes. On the other hand, the RFIC model was the most accurate between the three, with a slight degradation in comparison to the full model. Indeed, the RFIC model showed an RMSE on the estimation of water levels of 0.21 m.

Soil moisture is an essential parameter for a better understanding of water processes in the soil–vegetation–atmosphere continuum. Satellite synthetic aperture radar (SAR) is well suited for monitoring water content at fine spatial resolutions on the order of 1 km or higher. Several methodologies are often considered in the inversion of SAR signals: machine learning techniques, such as neural networks, empirical models and change detection methods. In this study, we propose two hybrid methodologies by improving a change detection approach with vegetation consideration or by combining a change detection approach together with a neural network algorithm. The methodology is based on Sentinel-1 and Sentinel-2 data with the use of numerous metrics, including vertical–vertical (VV) and vertical–horizontal (VH) polarization radar signals, the classical change detection surface soil moisture (SSM) index ISSM, radar incidence angle, normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) optical index, and the VH/VV ratio. Those approaches are tested using in situ data from the ISMN (International Soil Moisture Network) with observations covering different climatic contexts. The results show an improvement in soil moisture estimations using the hybrid algorithms, in particular the change detection with the neural network one, for which the correlation increases by 54% and 33% with respect to that of the neural network or change detection alone, respectively.

Forests are one of the key elements in ecological transition policies in Europe. Sustainable forest management is needed in order to optimise wood harvesting, while preserving carbon storage, biodiversity and other ecological functions. Forest managers and public bodies need improved and cost-effective forest monitoring tools. Research studies have been carried out to assess the use of optical and radar images for producing forest height or biomass maps. The main limitations are the quantity, quality and representativeness of the reference data for model training. The Global Ecosystem Dynamics Investigation (GEDI) mission (full waveform LiDAR on board the International Space Station) has provided an unprecedented number of forest canopy height samples from 2019. These samples could be used to improve reference datasets. This paper aims to present and validate a method for estimating forest dominant height from open access optical and radar satellite images (Sentinel-1, Sentinel-2 and ALOS-2 PALSAR-2), and then to assess the use of GEDI samples to replace field height measurements in model calibration. Our approach combines satellite image features and dominant height measurements, or GEDI metrics, in a Support Vector Machine regression algorithm, with a feature selection process. The method is tested on mixed uneven-aged broadleaved and coniferous forests in France. Using dominant height measurements for model training, the cross-validation shows 7.3 to 11.6% relative Root Mean Square Error (RMSE) depending on the forest class. When using GEDI height metrics instead of field measurements for model training, errors increase to 12.8–16.7% relative RMSE. This level of error remains satisfactory; the use of GEDI could allow the production of dominant height maps on large areas with better sample representativeness. Future work will focus on confirming these results on new study sites, improving the filtering and processing of GEDI data, and producing height maps at regional or national scale. The resulting maps will help forest managers and public bodies to optimise forest resource inventories, as well as allow scientists to integrate these cartographic data into climate models.

The interest in bistatic SAR systems for soil moisture monitoring has grown over recent years, since theoretical studies suggest that the impact of surface roughness on the retrieval of soil moisture decreases when multistatic, i.e., simultaneous mono- and bistatic, radar measurements are used. This paper presents a semi-empirical method to retrieve soil moisture over bare agricultural fields, based on effective roughness modeling, and applies it to a series of L-band fully-polarized SAR backscatter and bistatic scattering observations. The main advantage of using effective roughness parameters is that surface roughness no longer needs to be measured in the field, what is known to be the main source of error in soil moisture retrieval applications. By means of cross-validation, it is shown that the proposed method results in accurate soil moisture retrieval with an RMSE well below 0.05 m3/m3, with the best performance observed for the cross-polarized backscatter signal. In addition, different experimental SAR monostatic and bistatic configurations are evaluated in this study using the proposed retrieval technique. Results illustrate that the soil moisture retrieval performance increases by using backscatter data in multiple polarizations simultaneously, compared to the case where backscatter observations in only one polarization mode are used. Furthermore, the retrieval performance of a multistatic system has been evaluated and compared to that of a traditional monostatic system. The recent BELSAR campaign (in 2018) provides time-series of experimental airborne SAR measurements in two bistatic geometries, i.e., the across-track (XTI) and along-track (ATI) flight configuration. For both configurations, bistatic observations are available in the backward region. The results show that the simultaneous use of backscatter and bistatic scattering data does not result in a profound increase in retrieval performance for the bistatic configuration flown during BELSAR 2018. As theoretical studies demonstrate a strong improvement in retrieval performance when using backscatter and bistatic scattering coefficients in the forward region simultaneously, the introduction of additional bistatic airborne campaigns with more promising multistatic SAR configurations is highly recommended.

Spaceborne LiDAR altimetry has been demonstrated to be an essential source of data for the estimation and monitoring of inland water level variations. In this study, water level estimates from the Global Ecosystem Dynamics Investigation (GEDI) were validated against in situ gauge station records over Lake Geneva for the period between April 2019 and September 2020. The performances of the first and second releases (V1 and V2, respectively) of the GEDI data products were compared, and the effects on the accuracy of the instrumental and environmental factors were analyzed in order to discern the most accurate GEDI acquisitions. The respective influences of five parameters were analyzed in this study: (1) the signal-over-noise ratio (SNR); (2) the width of the water surface peak within the waveform (gwidth); (3) the amplitude of the water surface peak within the waveform (A); (4) the viewing angle of GEDI (VA); and (5) the acquiring beam. Results indicated that all these factors, except the acquiring beam, had an effect on the accuracy of GEDI elevations. Nonetheless, using VA as a filtering criterion was demonstrated to be the best compromise between retained shot count and water level estimation accuracy. Indeed, by choosing the shots with a VA ≤ 3.5°, 74.6% of the shots (after an initial filter) were retained with accuracies similar to choosing A > 400 (46.2% retained shots), SNR > 15 dB (63.3% retained shots), or gwidth < 10 bins (46.5% of retained shots). Finally, the comparison between V1 and V2 elevations showed that V2, overall, provided elevations with a more constant, but higher, bias and fewer deviations to the in situ data than V1. Indeed, by choosing GEDI shots with VA ≤ 3.5°, the unbiased RMSE (ubRMSE) of GEDI elevations was 27.1 cm with V2 (r = 0.66) and 42.8 cm with V1 (r = 0.34). Results also show that the accuracy of GEDI (ubRMSE) does not seem to depend on the beam number and GEDI acquisition dates for the most accurate GEDI acquisitions (VA ≤ 3.5°). Regarding the bias, a higher value was observed with V2, but with lower variability (54 cm) in comparison to V1 (35 cm). Finally, the bias showed a slight dependence on beam GEDI number and strong dependence on GEDI dates.

The objective of this paper was to estimate soil moisture in pepper crops with drip irrigation in a semi-arid area in the center of Tunisia using synthetic aperture radar (SAR) data. Within this context, the sensitivity of L-band (ALOS-2) in horizontal-horizontal (HH) and horizontal-vertical (HV) polarizations and C-band (Sentinel-1) data in vertical-vertical (VV) and vertical-horizontal (VH) polarizations is examined as a function of soil moisture and vegetation properties using statistical correlations. SAR signals scattered by pepper-covered fields are simulated with a modified version of the water cloud model using L-HH and C-VV data. In spatially heterogeneous soil moisture cases, the total backscattering is the sum of the bare soil contribution weighted by the proportion of bare soil (one-cover fraction) and the vegetation fraction cover contribution. The vegetation fraction contribution is calculated as the volume scattering contribution of the vegetation and underlying soil components attenuated by the vegetation cover. The underlying soil is divided into irrigated and non-irrigated parts owing to the presence of drip irrigation, thus generating different levels of moisture underneath vegetation. Based on signal sensitivity results, the potential of L-HH data to retrieve soil moisture is demonstrated. L-HV data exhibit a higher potential to retrieve vegetation properties regarding a lower potential for soil moisture estimation. After calibration and validation of the proposed model, various simulations are performed to assess the model behavior patterns under different conditions of soil moisture and pepper biophysical properties. The results highlight the potential of the proposed model to simulate a radar signal over heterogeneous soil moisture fields using L-HH and C-VV data.

Lorey’s height, representative of mean height in uneven-aged forest stands, is a valuable parameter for forest ecosystem management. While in situ measures provide the most precise information, remote-sensing techniques may provide less expensive but denser and more operational alternative of Lorey’s height estimation over highly mountainous areas. This research aims first to evaluate the performances of two nonparametric data mining methods, random forest (RF) and artificial neural network (ANN), for estimation of Lorey’s height using ice, cloud and land elevation satellite/geoscience laser altimeter system (ICESat/GLAS) in Hyrcanian forests of Iran and then to provide Lorey’s height map using a synergy of ICESat/GLAS and optical images (TM and SPOT). RF and ANN GLAS height models were developed using waveform deterministic metrics, principal components (PCs) from principal component analysis (PCA) and terrain index (TI) extracted from a digital elevation model (DEM). The best result was obtained using an ANN combining first three PCs of PCA and waveform extent ʺWextʺ (RMSE = 3.4 m, RMSE% = 12.4). In order to map Lorey’s height, GLAS-estimated heights were regressed against indices derived from optical images and also topographic information. The best model (RF regression with RMSE = 5.5 m and = 0.59) was applied on the entire study area, and a wall-to-wall height map was generated. This map showed relatively good compatibility with in situ measurements collected in part of the study area.

In agronomy, soil organic carbon (SOC) content is important for the development and growth of crops. From an environmental monitoring viewpoint, SOC sequestration is essential for mitigating the emission of greenhouse gases into the atmosphere. SOC dynamics in cropland soils should be further studied through various approaches including remote sensing. In order to predict SOC content over croplands in southwestern France (area of 22,177 km²), this study addresses (i) the influence of the dates on which Sentinel-2 (S2) images were acquired in the springs of 2017–2018 as well as the influence of the soil sampling period of a set of samples collected between 2005 and 2018, (ii) the use of soil moisture products (SMPs) derived from Sentinel-1/2 satellites to analyze the influence of surface soil moisture on model performance when included as a covariate, and (iii) whether the spatial distribution of SOC as mapped using S2 is related to terrain-derived attributes. The influences of S2 image dates and soil sampling periods were analyzed for bare topsoil. The dates of the S2 images with the best performance (RPD ≥ 1.7) were 6 April and 26 May 2017, using soil samples collected between 2016 and 2018. The soil sampling dates were also analyzed using SMP values. Soil moisture values were extracted for each sample and integrated into partial least squares regression (PLSR) models. The use of soil moisture as a covariate had no effect on the prediction performance of the models; however, SMP values were used to select the driest dates, effectively mapping topsoil organic carbon. S2 was able to predict high SOC contents in the specific soil types located on the old terraces (mesas) shaped by rivers flowing from the southwestern Pyrénées.

Surface water storage in floodplains and wetlands is poorly known from regional to global scales, in spite of its importance in the hydrological and the carbon balances, as the wet areas are an important water compartment which delays water transfer, modifies the sediment transport through sedimentation and erosion processes, and are a source for greenhouse gases. Remote sensing is a powerful tool for monitoring temporal variations in both the extent, level, and volume, of water using the synergy between satellite images and radar altimetry. Estimating water levels over flooded area using radar altimetry observation is difficult. In this study, an unsupervised classification approach is applied on the radar altimetry backscattering coefficients to discriminate between flooded and non-flooded areas in the Cuvette Centrale of Congo. Good detection of water (open water, permanent and seasonal inundation) is above 0.9 using radar altimetry backscattering from ENVISAT and Jason-2. Based on these results, the time series of water levels were automatically produced. They exhibit temporal variations in good agreement with the hydrological regime of the Cuvette Centrale. Comparisons against a manually generated time series of water levels from the same missions at the same locations show a very good agreement between the two processes (i.e., RMSE ≤ 0.25 m in more than 80%/90% of the cases and R ≥ 0.95 in more than 95%/75% of the cases for ENVISAT and Jason-2, respectively). The use of the time series of water levels over rivers and wetlands improves the spatial pattern of the annual amplitude of water storage in the Cuvette Centrale. It also leads to a decrease by a factor of four for the surface water estimates in this area, compared with a case where only time series over rivers are considered.

The Global Ecosystem Dynamics Investigation (GEDI) full-waveform (FW) LiDAR instrument on board the International Space Station (ISS) has acquired in its first 18 months of operation more than 25 billion shots globally, presenting a unique opportunity for the analysis of LiDAR data across multiple domains (e.g., forestry, hydrology). Nonetheless, not all acquired GEDI shots provide exploitable waveforms due to instrumental (e.g., transmitted energy, viewing angle) and atmospheric conditions (e.g., clouds, aerosols). In this study, we analyzed the quality of all available GEDI acquisitions over France, Tunisia, and French Guiana, in order to determine the extent of the impact of instrumental and climatic factors on the viability of these acquisitions. Results showed that with favorable acquisition conditions (i.e., cloud-free acquisitions), the factor with the highest impact on the viability of GEDI data is the acquisition time, as acquisitions around noon were the least viable due to higher solar noise. In addition to acquisition time, the viewing angle, the transmitted energy, and the aerosol optical depth all affected, to a lesser extent, the viability of GEDI data. Nonetheless, the percentage of exploitable cloud-free GEDI acquisitions ranged from 75 to 91% of all total acquisitions, depending on the acquisition site. The analysis of the quality of GEDI shots acquired in the presence of clouds showed that clouds have a greater impact on their exploitability, with sometimes as much as 69% of acquired data being unusable. For cloudy acquisitions, the two factors that mostly affect the LiDAR signal are the cloud optical depth (or cloud opacity) and cloud water content. Overall, nonviable GEDI data represent less than 50% of total acquisitions across the different instrumental, climatic, and environmental conditions.

In this study, we present an operational methodology for mapping irrigated areas at plot scale, which overcomes the limitation of terrain data availability, using Sentinel-1 (S1) C-band SAR (synthetic-aperture radar) and Sentinel-2 (S2) optical time series. The method was performed over a study site located near Orléans city of north-central France for four years (2017 until 2020). First, training data of irrigated and non-irrigated plots were selected using predefined selection criteria to obtain sufficient samples of irrigated and non-irrigated plots each year. The training data selection criteria is based on two irrigation metrics; the first one is a SAR-based metric derived from the S1 time series and the second is an optical-based metric derived from the NDVI (normalized difference vegetation index) time series of the S2 data. Using the newly developed irrigation event detection model (IEDM) applied for all S1 time series in VV (Vertical-Vertical) and VH (Vertical-Horizontal) polarizations, an irrigation weight metric was calculated for each plot. Using the NDVI time series, the maximum NDVI value achieved in the crop cycle was considered as a second selection metric. By fixing threshold values for both metrics, a dataset of irrigated and non-irrigated samples was constructed each year. Later, a random forest classifier (RF) was built for each year in order to map the summer agricultural plots into irrigated/non-irrigated. The irrigation classification model uses the S1 and NDVI time series calculated over the selected training plots. Finally, the proposed irrigation classifier was validated using real in situ data collected each year. The results show that, using the proposed classification procedure, the overall accuracy for the irrigation classification reaches 84.3%, 93.0%, 81.8%, and 72.8% for the years 2020, 2019, 2018, and 2017, respectively. The comparison between our proposed classification approach and the RF classifier built directly from in situ data showed that our approach reaches an accuracy nearly similar to that obtained using in situ RF classifiers with a difference in overall accuracy not exceeding 6.2%. The analysis of the obtained classification accuracies of the proposed method with precipitation data revealed that years with higher rainfall amounts during the summer crop-growing season (irrigation period) had lower overall accuracy (72.8% for 2017) whereas years encountering a drier summer had very good accuracy (93.0% for 2019).

Radar altimetry is now commonly used to provide long-term monitoring of inland water levels in complement to or for replacing disappearing in situ networks of gauge stations. Recent improvements in tracking and acquisition modes improved the quality the water retrievals. The newly implemented Open Loop mode is likely to increase the number of monitored water bodies owing to the use of an a priori elevation, especially in hilly and mountainous areas. The novelty of this study is to provide a comprehensive evaluation of the performances of the past and current radar altimetry missions according to their acquisition (Low Resolution Mode or Synthetic Aperture Radar) and tracking (close or open loop) modes, and acquisition frequency (Ku or Ka) in a mountainous area where tracking losses of the signal are likely to occur, as well as of the recently launched ICESat-2 and GEDI lidar missions. To do so, we evaluate the quality of water level retrievals from most radar altimetry missions launched after 1995 over eight lakes in Switzerland, using the recently developed ALtimetry Time Series software, to compare the performances of the new tracking and acquisition modes and also the impact of the frequency used. The combination of the Open Loop tracking mode with the Synthetic Aperture Radar acquisition mode on SENTINEL-3A and B missions outperforms the classical Low Resolution Mode of the other missions with a lake observability greater than 95%, an almost constant bias of (−0.17 ± 0.04) m, a RMSE generally lower than 0.07 m and a R most of the times higher than 0.85 when compared to in situ gauge records. To increase the number of lakes that can be monitored and the temporal sampling of the water level retrievals, data acquired by lidar altimetry missions were also considered. Very accurate results were also obtained with ICESat-2 data with RMSE lower than 0.06 and R higher than 0.95 when compared to in situ water levels. An almost constant bias (0.42 ± 0.03) m was also observed. More contrasted results were obtained using GEDI. As these data were available on a shorter time period, more analyses are necessary to determine their potential for retrieving water levels.

Surface soil moisture (SSM) is a key variable for many environmental studies, including hydrology and agriculture. Synthetic aperture radar (SAR) data in the C-band are widely used nowadays to estimate SSM since the Sentinel-1 provides free-of-charge C-band SAR images at high spatial resolution with high revisit time, whereas the use of L-band is limited due to the low data availability. In this context, the main objective of this paper is to develop an operational approach for SSM estimation that mainly uses data in the C-band (Sentinel-1) with L-bands (ALOS/PALSAR) as additional data to improve SSM estimation accuracy. The approach is based on the use of the artificial neural networks (NNs) technique to firstly derive the soil roughness (Hrms) from the L-band (HH polarization) to then consider the L-band-derived Hrms and C-band SAR data (VV and VH polarizations) in the input vectors of NNs for SSM estimation. Thus, the Hrms estimated from the L-band at a given date is assumed to be constant for a given times series of C-band images. The NNs were trained and validated using synthetic and real databases. The results showed that the use of the L-band-derived Hrms in the input vector of NN in addition to C-band SAR data improved SSM estimation by decreasing the error (bias and RMSE), mainly for SSM values lower than 15 vol.% and regardless of Hrms values. Based on the synthetic database, the NNs that neglect the Hrms underestimate and overestimate the SSM (bias ranges between −8.0 and 4.0 vol.%) for Hrms values lower and higher than 1.5 cm, respectively. For Hrms 2.0 cm and SSM between 8 to 22 vol.%, the accuracy on the SSM estimation improved and the overestimation decreased by 2.2 vol.% (from 4.5 to 2.3 vol.%). From the real database, the use of Hrms estimated from the L-band brought a significant improvement of the SSM estimation accuracy. For in situ SSM less than 15 vol.%, the RMSE decreased by 1.5 and 2.2 vol.% and the bias by 1.2 and 2.6 vol.%, for Hrms values lower and higher than 1.5 cm, respectively.

The Global Ecosystem Dynamics Investigation LiDAR (GEDI) is a new full waveform (FW) based LiDAR system that presents a new opportunity for the observation of forest structures globally. The backscattered GEDI signals, as all FW systems, are distorted by topographic conditions within their footprint, leading to uncertainties on the measured forest variables. In this study, we explore how well several approaches based on waveform metrics and ancillary digital elevation model (DEM) data perform on the estimation of stand dominant heights (Hdom) and wood volume (V) across different sites of Eucalyptus plantations with varying terrain slopes. In total, five models were assessed on their ability to estimate Hdom and four models for V. Results showed that the models using the GEDI metrics, such as the height at different energy quantiles with terrain data from the shuttle radar topography mission’s (SRTM) digital elevation model (DEM) were still dependent on the topographic slope. For Hdom, an RMSE increase of 14% was observed for data acquired over slopes higher than 20% in comparison to slopes between 10 and 20%. For V, a 74% increase in RMSE was reported between GEDI data acquired over slopes between 0–10% and those acquired over slopes higher than 10%. Next, a model relying on the height at different energy quantiles of the entire waveform (HTn) and the height at different energy quartiles of the bare ground waveform (HGn) was assessed. Two sets of the HGn metrics were generated, the first one was obtained using a simulated waveform representing the echo from a bare ground, while the second one relied on the actual ground return from the waveform by means of Gaussian fitting. Results showed that both the simulated and fitted models provide the most accurate estimates of Hdom and V for all slope ranges. The simulation-based model showed an RMSE that ranged between 1.39 and 1.66 m (between 26.76 and 39.26 m3·ha−1 for V) while the fitting-based method showed an RMSE that ranged between 1.26 and 1.34 m (between 26.78 and 36.29 m3·ha−1 for V). Moreover, the dependency of the GEDI metrics on slopes was greatly reduced using the two sets of metrics. As a conclusion, the effect of slopes on the 25-m GEDI footprints is rather low as the estimation on canopy heights from uncorrected waveforms degraded by a maximum of 1 m for slopes between 20 and 45%. Concerning the wood volume estimation, the effect of slopes was more pronounced, and a degradation on the accuracy (increased RMSE) of a maximum of 20 m3·ha−1 was observed for slopes between 20 and 45%.

This paper discusses the potential of L-band Advanced Land Observing Satellite-2 (ALOS-2) and C-band Sentinel-1 radar data for retrieving soil parameters over cereal fields. For this purpose, multi-incidence, multi-polarization and dual-frequency satellite data were acquired simultaneously with in situ measurements collected over a semiarid area, the Merguellil Plain (central Tunisia). The L- and C-band signal sensitivity to soil roughness, moisture and vegetation was investigated. High correlation coefficients were observed between the radar signals and soil roughness values for all processed multi-configurations of ALOS-2 and Sentinel-1 data. The sensitivity of SAR (Synthetic Aperture Radar) data to soil moisture was investigated for three classes of the normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) (low vegetation cover, medium cover and dense cover), illustrating a decreasing sensitivity with increasing NDVI values. The highest sensitivity to soil moisture under the dense cover class is observed in L-band data. For various vegetation properties (leaf area index (LAI), height of vegetation cover (H) and vegetation water content (VWC)), a strong correlation is observed with the ALOS-2 radar signals (in HH(Horizontal-Horizontal) and HV(Horizontal-Vertical) polarizations). Different empirical models that link radar signals (in the L- and C-bands) to soil moisture and roughness parameters, as well as the semi-empirical Dubois modified model (Dubois-B) and the modified integral equation model (IEM-B), over bare soils are proposed for all polarizations. The results reveal that IEM-B performed a better accuracy comparing to Dubois-B. This analysis is also proposed for covered surfaces using different options provided by the water cloud model (WCM) (with and without the soil–vegetation interaction scattering term) coupled with the best accuracy bare soil backscattering models: IEM-B for co-polarization and empirical models for the entire dataset. Based on the validated backscattering models, different options of coupled models are tested for soil moisture inversion. The integration of a soil–vegetation interaction component in the WCM illustrates a considerable contribution to soil moisture precision in the HV polarization mode in the L-band frequency and a neglected effect on C-band data inversion.
