International audience; Ices are omnipresent in cold regions in space on, e.g., comets, dust grains, transneptunian objects, surfaces of planets and their satellites. The dominant molecule in such ices is water, but also other small molecules or even complex organic molecules (COMs) may be present. Ionizing radiation (UV photons, electrons, ions from cosmic rays or solar wind) induces several physico-chemical processes such as radiolysis. The fragmentation of initial molecules followed by chemical reactions between radicals may lead to formation of new molecules. Furthermore, also implanted projectiles can contribute to chemistry by forming new molecular species. Other observed effects include structural changes (compaction, amorphization) and desorption (sputtering) of particles from the surface. At CIMAP (Caen, France), using the different beam lines of the GANIL facility, and at GSI (Darmstadt, Germany), the interaction of swift highly charged heavy ions with astrophysical ices has been studied in a wide projectile energy range from keV to GeV. Here, two examples of our studies on astrophysical and astrochemical applications will be discussed in detail: 1) the synthesis of COMs under irradiation of ices made of small molecules, and 2) radiosensitivity of COMs such as pyridine, glycine and adenine, both for isolated molecules in the gas phase and in condensed phase. Special emphasis is given on pyridine and pyridine in water matrix.

International audience; Various hydroxypyridine derivatives are endogenous or synthetic photosensitizers which could contribute to solar radiation damage. The study of their excited states could lead to a better understanding of their action mechanisms. We present here the ultraviolet (UV) spectra of the protonated 2-, 3-and 4-hydroxypyridine. These spectra were obtained with an experimental device coupling an electrospray ion source with a cold quadrupole ion trap and a time of flight mass spectrometer. They display well resolved vibrational structures, with a clear influence of the position of the OH group. These results are interpreted with excited states calculations at the coupled cluster CC2 level.

We studied the single-photon ionization of gas-phase δ-valerolactam (piperidin-2-one) and of its dimer using vacuum-ultraviolet (VUV) synchrotron radiation coupled to a velocity map imaging electron/ion coincidence spectrometer. The slow photoelectron spectrum (SPES) of the monomer is dominated by the vibrational transitions to the equation image state. Moreover, several weaker and complex bands are observed, corresponding to the population of the vibrational bands (pure or combination) of the electronically excited states of the cation arising from their mutual vibronic interactions. For the dimer, we measure a unique large band. These spectra are assigned with the help of theoretical calculations dealing with the equilibrium geometries, electronic-state patterns and evolutions, harmonic and anharmonic wavenumbers of the monomer and dimer, either neutral or positively charged. The state energies of the [δ-valerolactam]+ cation in the equation image ground, equation image, equation image and equation image excited electronic states, and of the [δ-valerolactam]2+ cation′s lowest states are determined. After its formation, [δ-valerolactam]2+ is subject to intramolecular isomerization, H transfer and then unimolecular fragmentation processes. Close to the ionization thresholds, the photoionization of these molecules is found to be mainly dominated by a direct process whereas the indirect route (autoionization) contributes at higher energies.

In this contribution, we focus on the use of C-60(+) ions for depth profiling of model synthetic polymers: polystyrene (PS) and poly(methylmethacrylate) (PMMA). These polymers were spin coated on silicon wafers, and the obtained samples were depth-profiled both with Ga+ ions and C-60(+) ions. We observed an important yield enhancement for both polymers when C-60(+) ions are used. More specifically, we discuss here the decrease in damage obtained with C-60, which is found to be very sensitive to the nature of the polymer. During the C-60(+) sputtering of the PMMA layer, after an initial decrease, a steady state is observed in the secondary ion yield of characteristic fragments. In contrast, for PS, an exponential decrease is directly observed, leading to an initial disappearance cross section close to the value observed for Ga+. Though there is a significant loss of characteristic PS signal when sputtering with C-60(+) ions beams, there are still significant enhancements in sputter yields when employing C-60(+) as compared to Ga+. The advantages and drawbacks of using either monatomic or buckminsterfullerene primary ions for metal-assisted secondary ion mass spectrometry (MetA-SIMS) are investigated using a series of organic samples including additive molecules, polyolefins, and small peptides. Gold deposition is mostly performed by sputter-coating, and in some cases, the results are compared to those of thermal evaporation (already used in a previous article: Delcorte, A.; Médard, N.; Bertrand, P. Anal. Chem. 2002, 74, 4955). The microstructure of the gold-covered sample surfaces is assessed by scanning and transmission electron microscopies. The merits of the different sets of experimental conditions are established via the analysis of fragment and parent-like ion yields. For most of the analyzed samples, the highest yields of fragment and parent-like ions are already reached with the sole use of C60+ projectiles. Metallization of the sample does not lead to a significant additional enhancement. For polyethylene and polypropylene, however, gold metallization associated with Ga+/In+ projectiles appears to be the only way to observe large cationized, sample-specific chain segments (m/z approximately 1000-2000). A detailed study of the polypropylene mass spectra as a function of gold coverage shows that the dynamics of yield enhancement by metal nanoparticles is strongly dependent on the choice of the projectile, e.g., a pronounced increase with Ga+ and a slow decay with C60+. The cases of Irganox 1010, a polymer antioxidant, and leucine enkephalin, a small peptide, allow us to investigate the specific influence of the experimental conditions on the emission of parent(like) ions such as M+, (M + Na)+, and (M + Au)+. The results show a dependence on both the type of sample and the considered secondary ion. Using theoretical and experimental arguments, the discussion identifies some of the mechanisms underlying the general trends observed in the results. Guidelines concerning the choice of the experimental conditions for MetA-SIMS are provided.

International audience; The gas-phase structures of doubly and triply protonated Amyloid-β12-28 peptides have been investigated through the combination of ion mobility (IM), electron capture dissociation (ECD) mass spectrometry, and infrared multi-photon dissociation (IRMPD) spectroscopy together with theoretical modeling. Replica-exchange molecular dynamics simulations were conducted to explore the conformational space of these protonated peptides, from which several classes of structures were found. Among the low-lying conformers, those with predicted diffusion cross-sections consistent with the ion mobility experiment were further selected and their IR spectra simulated using a hybrid quantum mechanical/semiempirical method at the ONIOM DFT/B3LYP/6-31 g(d)/AM1 level. In ECD mass spectrometry, the c/z product ion abundance (PIA) has been analyzed for the two charge states and revealed drastic differences. For the doubly protonated species, N - Cα bond cleavage occurs only on the N and C terminal parts, while a periodic distribution of PIA is clearly observed for the triply charged peptides. These PIA distributions have been rationalized by comparison with the inverse of the distances from the protonated sites to the carbonyl oxygens for the conformations suggested from IR and IM experiments. Structural assignment for the amyloid peptide is then made possible by the combination of these three experimental techniques that provide complementary information on the possible secondary structure adopted by peptides. Although globular conformations are favored for the doubly protonated peptide, incrementing the charge state leads to a conformational transition towards extended structures with 310- and α-helix motifs.

Biomolecular recognition of vancomycin antibiotics with its cell-wall precursor analogue Ac(2)(L)K(D)A(D)A has been investigated in the gas phase through a combined laser spectroscopy/mass spectrometry approach. The mid-IR spectra (1100-1800 cm(-1)) of these mass-selected anionic species have been recorded by means of resonant infrared multiphoton dissociation (IRMPD) spectroscopy performed with the free-electron laser CLIO. Structural assignment has been achieved through comparisons with the low-energy conformers obtained from replica-exchange molecular dynamics simulations, for which IR spectra were calculated using a hybrid quantum mechanics/semi-empirical (QM/SE) method at the DFT/B3LYP/6-31+G*/AM1 level. Comparison between deprotonated vancomycin and its non-covalently bound V + Ac(2)(L)K(D)A(D)A complex shows significant spectral shifts of the carboxylate stretches and the Amide I and Amide II modes that are satisfactorily reproduced in the structures known from the condensed phase. Both theoretical and experimental findings provide strong evidence that the native structure of the deprotonated V + Ac(2)(L)K(D)A(D)A complex is preserved in the gas phase.

We studied the photoionization of 2-pyridone and its tautomer, 2-hydroxypyridine by means of VUV synchrotron radiation coupled to a velocity map imaging electron/ion coincidence spectrometer. The photoionization efficiency (PIE) spectrum is composed of steps. The state energies of the [2-pyridone](+) cation in the X[combining tilde] ground and A excited electronic states, as well as of the [2-hydroxypyridine](+) cation in the electronic ground state, are determined. The slow photoelectron spectra (SPES) are dominated by the 0(0)(0) transitions to the corresponding electronic states together with several weaker bands corresponding to the population of the pure or combination vibrational bands of the cations. These vibrationally-resolved spectra compare very well with state-of-the-art calculations. Close to the ionization thresholds, the photoionization of these molecules is found to be mainly dominated by a direct process whereas the indirect route (autoionization) may contribute at higher energies.

Flexible structures of small isolated biomolecules of pharmaceutical interest can be investigated by means of infrared spectroscopy coupled to mass spectrometry, spectroscopy and quantum calculations. Gas-phase studies then offer the possibility of scrutinizing weak interactions established between molecular partners in the absence of any competition with a surrounding solvent. The introduction of pharmacophoric parameters makes it possible to connect structure and bioactivity. In order to come closer to realistic biological conditions, it is possible to link gas-phase properties to those in an aqueous environment at room temperature.

Static secondary ion mass spectrometry (S-SIMS) is one of the potentially most powerful and versatile tools for the analysis of surface components at the monolayer level. Current improvements in detection limit (LOD) and molecular specificity rely on the optimisation of the desorption-ionisation (DI) process. As an alternative to monoatomic projectiles, polyatomic primary ion (P.I.) bombardment increases ion yields non-linearly. Common P.I. sources are Ga+ (liquid metal ion gun (LMIG)), SF5+ (electron ionisation) and the newer Au-n(+), Bi-n(q+) (both LMIG) and C-60(+) (electron ionisation) sources. In this study the ion yield improvement obtained by using the newly developed ion sources is assessed. Two dyes (zwitterionic and/or thermolabile polar functionalities on a largely conjugated backbone) were analysed as a thin layer using Ga+, SF5+, C-60(+), Bi+, Bi-3(2+) and Bi-5(2+) projectiles under static conditions. The study aims at evaluating the improvement in LOD, useful and characteristic yield and molecular specificity. The corrected total ion count values for the different P.I. sources are compared for different instruments to obtain a rough estimate of the improvements. Furthermore, tentative ionisation and fragmentation schemes are provided to describe the generation of radical and adduct ions. Characteristic ion yields are discussed for the different P.I. sources. An overview of the general appearances of the mass spectra obtained with the different P.I. sources is given to stress the major improvement provided by polyatomic P.I.s in yielding information at higher m/z values.
