Rhizobial lipochitooligosaccharidic Nod factors (NFs), specified by nod genes, are the primary determinants of host specificity in the legume-Rhizobia symbiosis. We examined the nodulation ability of Medicago truncatula cv Jemalong A17 and M. truncatula ssp. tricycla R108 with the Sinorhizobium meliloti nodF/nodL mutant, which produces modified NFs. We then applied genetic and functional approaches to study the genetic basis and mechanism of nodulation of R108 by this mutant. We show that the nodF/nodL mutant can nodulate R108 but not A17. Using genomics and reverse genetics, we identified a newly evolved, chimeric LysM receptor-like kinase gene in R108, LYK2bis, which is responsible for the phenotype and can allow A17 to gain nodulation with the nodF/nodL mutant. We found that LYK2bis is involved in nodulation by mutants producing nonO-acetylated NFs and interacts with the key receptor protein NFP. Many, but not all, natural S. meliloti and S. medicae strains tested require LYK2bis for efficient nodulation of R108. Our findings reveal that a newly evolved gene in R108, LYK2bis, extends nodulation specificity to mutants producing nonO-acetylated NFs and is important for nodulation by many natural Sinorhizobia. Evolution of this gene may present an adaptive advantage to allow nodulation by a greater variety of strains.

Vertical Fixed Field Accelerators (vFFAs) feature complex and highly non-linear magnetic fields, which require simulation codes allowing step-wise particle tracking. Methods to model the 3D magnetic field of scaling vFFAs have been developed in the ray-tracing code Zgoubi. The field modeling and particle tracking methods include the field non-linearities, the fringe fields, and the field superposition of neighboring magnets. The procedure implements the vFFA analytical field expressions, allowing design studies and parameter optimizations using the Zgoubi built-in fit method. The vFFA procedure has been applied to a ten-fold symmetry ring with a triplet focusing structure designed to accelerate protons from 3 MeV to 12 MeV and studied under the ISIS-II proton driver prototype project. Results from particle tracking in externally generated 3D semi-analytical field maps and the developed vFFA analytical model are shown to be in excellent agreement.

In this paper we present the results of a detector response function modeling using a new version of PHITS Particle and Heavy Ion Transport Code with an advanced feature for asymmetrical peak broadening. Tests are performed on a room temperature medium resolution 500 mm3 CdZnTe detector of a quasi-hemispherical design with validation on a set of point source gamma-ray spectra with a range of energies from 59 keV up to 1332 keV. Performance assessment is conducted with respect to built-in spectra broadening capabilities using as default Gaussian as well as an asymmetrical peak shape models. Results of our study indicate that up to 200 keV energy range where peak asymmetry is not severe a default Gaussian peak shape broadening can be used. Beyond 200 keV the degree of CZT photopeak asymmetry becomes significant and requires an asymmetrical peak shape broadening. This asymmetry affects the low-energy side of the photopeaks and has a non-linear behavior with energy. We find that with a built-in feature of a tailed peak shape model introduced in the new version of PHITS code (ver. 3.10) asymmetrical peak shapes of CZT detectors can be approximated. Optical properties of polycrystalline molybdenum are determined from ultraviolet up to extreme ultraviolet by reflection electron energy loss spectroscopy (REELS). Calculations are performed within the dielectric response theory by means of the quantitative analysis of electron energy losses at surfaces QUEELS-ε(k, ω)-REELS software [Surf. Interface Anal. 36, 824 (2004)] that allows the simulation of inelastic scattering cross sections, using a parametric energy loss function describing the optical response of the material. The high importance of X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) in surface analysis is well established. In XPS, the shape of the measured peaks is affected by two classes of energy loss: extrinsic losses because of the transport of photoelectrons in the matter and intrinsic losses because of the sudden creation of the static core hole. In order to perform a quantitative, comprehensive determination of the zero-energy loss spectrum, a systematic and physically meaningful background subtraction method must be used. In this paper, we propose a universal analytical expression to model the energy loss cross section of the emitted photoelectrons for transition metals and their oxides. The proposed expression is a generalization of the well-known Tougaard's universal inelastic scattering cross section to also account for the intrinsic losses. We demonstrate the use of this to determine the primary excitation spectra of several transition metals and their oxides, and we compare the results with a more accurate calculation based on the dielectric response model for XPS., SCOPUS: ar.j, info:eu-repo/semantics/published

Shielding disks play an important role in intraoperative electron radiation therapy, and different designs are currently used in clinical practice. Purpose In IOERT breast treatments, a shielding disk is frequently used to protect the underlying healthy structures. The disk is usually composed of two materials, a low-Z material intended to be oriented towards the beam and a high-Z material. As tissues are repositioned around the shield before treatment, the disk is no longer visible and its correct alignment with respect to the beam is guaranteed. This paper studies the dosimetric characteristics of four possible clinical positioning scenarios of the shielding disk. A new alignment method for the shielding disk in the beam is introduced. Finally, it suggests a new design for the shielding disk. Methods As the first step, the IOERT machine “Mobetron 1000” was modeled by using Monte Carlo simulation, tuning the MC model until an excellent match with the measured PDDs and profiles was achieved. Four possible shielding disk positioning scenarios were considered, determining the dosimetric impact. Furthermore, in our center, to prevent beam misalignment, we have developed a shielding disk equipped with guiding rods. Having ascertained a correct alignment between the disk and the beam, we can propose a new internal design of the shielding disk that can improve the dose distribution with a better coverage of the treated area. Results All MC simulations were performed with a 12 MeV beam, the maximum energy of Mobetron 1000 and a 5.5 cm diameter flat tip applicator, this applicator being the most clinically used. The simulations were compared with measurements performed in a water phantom and showed good results within 2.2% of root mean square difference (RMSD). The misplacement positions of the shielding disk have dosimetric impacts in the treatment volume and a small translation could have a significant influence on healthy tissues. The D-scenario is the worst which could happens when the shielding disk is flipped upside down, giving up to 144% dose instead of 90% at the surface of the Pb/Al shielding disk. A new shielding design used, together with our alignment tool, is able to give a more homogeneous dose in the target area. Conclusions The accuracy of shielding disk position can still be problematic in IOERT dosimetry. Any method that can ascertain the good alignment between the shielding disk and the beam is beneficial for the dose distribution and is a prerequisite for an optimized shield internal design that could improve the coverage of the treated area and the protection of healthy tissues.

The measured Yb 4d3/2 intensity is larger than the Yb 4d5/2 in X-ray photoelectron (XPS) emission of metallic Yb, which is unexpected. The shape and intensity of photoelectron peaks are strongly affected by extrinsic excitations due to electron transport out of the surface (including bulk and surface effects) and to intrinsic excitations due to the sudden creation of the static core hole. To quantitatively extract from experimental XPS the primary excitation spectrum (ie, the initial excitation process) of the considered transition, these effects must be included within the theoretical description. The combined effect of both extrinsic and intrinsic excitations can be described by an effective energy-differential inelastic electron scattering cross section for XPS evaluated by a dielectric response model with the dielectric function as only input. Then, using this cross section, a direct evaluation of the primary excitation spectrum is performed by standard peak shape analysis for thick homogeneous samples. We use this approach in the present paper to determine the Yb 4d photoemission spectrum for metallic Yb. We show that the unexpected larger intensity of Yb 4d3/2 compared to 4d5/2 can be fully accounted for by our model and that the total spectrum consists of a sum of symmetric primary excitation peaks.

The activation of concrete is a real problem from the point of view of waste management. Because of the complexity of the issue, Monte Carlo (MC) codes have become an essential tool to its study. But various codes or even nuclear models exist in MC. MCNPX and PHITS have already been validated for shielding studies but GEANT4 is also a suitable solution. In these codes, different models can be considered for a concrete activation study. The Bertini model is not the best model for spallation while BIC and INCL model agrees well with previous results in literature.

Self-interrogation neutron resonance densitometry (SINRD) is a non-destructive analysis technique that can be used to quantify the amount of 239Pu in spent nuclear fuel. It is a passive method that relies on the detection of neutrons, which are emitted by the fuel. The amount of 239Pu is estimated from the ratio of the neutron intensity in the fast energy region and in a region close to the 0.296 eV resonance of 239Pu. The neutron intensity in the resonance region is obtained from a detection system with a high sensitivity to 0.296 eV neutrons. This can be realized by using two neutron detectors with 239Pu as convertor material. One of the detectors is covered by a thin Gd foil and the other by a thin Cd foil. The Gd and Cd foils are referred to as SINRD filters. An approach based on the measurement of a fuel assembly in air and surrounded by a slab of polyethylene was developed at SCK·CEN. This approach foresees the insertion of small neutron detectors in the guide tubes of the assembly, and optimisation studies of SINRD were based on Monte Carlo simulations. Experiments to support the results of such simulations were carried out at the time-of-flight facility GELINA of the Joint Research Centre (JRC) in Geel (Belgium). Transmission measurements were performed to verify the quality of the nuclear data that are used to define the optimum thickness of the SINRD filters. Results of self-indication measurements were used to confirm the basic principle of SINRD, that is, that the best results are obtained with a detector that has a high sensitivity to neutrons with energy close to the energy of a strong resonance of the material under investigation. The results of these experiments are presented in this work.

The model legume Medicago truncatula possesses a single outward Shaker K+ channel, whereas Arabidopsis thaliana possesses two channels of this type, named AtSKOR and AtGORK, with AtSKOR having been shown to play a major role in K+ secretion into the xylem sap in the root vasculature and with AtGORK being shown to mediate the efflux of K+ across the guard cell membrane, leading to stomatal closure. Here we show that the expression pattern of the single M. truncatula outward Shaker channel, which has been named MtGORK, includes the root vasculature, guard cells and root hairs. As shown by patch-clamp experiments on root hair protoplasts, besides the Shaker-type slowly activating outwardly rectifying K+ conductance encoded by MtGORK, a second K+ -permeable conductance, displaying fast activation and weak rectification, can be expressed by M. truncatula. A knock-out (KO) mutation resulting in an absence of MtGORK activity is shown to weakly reduce K+ translocation to shoots, and only in plants engaged in rhizobial symbiosis, but to strongly affect the control of stomatal aperture and transpirational water loss. In legumes, the early electrical signaling pathway triggered by Nod-factor perception is known to comprise a short transient depolarization of the root hair plasma membrane. In the absence of the functional expression of MtGORK, the rate of the membrane repolarization is found to be decreased by a factor of approximately two. This defect was without any consequence on infection thread development and nodule production in plants grown in vitro, but a decrease in nodule production was observed in plants grown in soil.

There is currently a huge interest in the use of artificial intelligence (AI) technologies for various data analysis applications. Among these applications are radiation detection and spectra analysis tasks aiming at qualitative and quantitative information extraction on the assaying radioisotopes. AI tools are foreseen as promising techniques to deal with complex spectra analysis cases, where the traditional statistical tools are subject to deficiencies, due to high degree of noise, peak overlapping and statistical uncertainties because of the room temperature operation of detectors such as CdZnTe and LaBr3(Ce). However, over the years there has been no comprehensive assessment of possible conceptual designs of such AI-based algorithms for spectra analysis purposes applied to uranium enrichment determination tasks. This paper analyzes different AI-based methodologies for the qualitative and quantitative analyses of uranium spectra and presents the AI-based Cluster Analysis via Machine Intelligence and Learning Algorithms (CAMILA) code for uranium enrichment determination. The performance assessment of multivariate and pattern recognition methodologies limits and possibilities is conducted in view of different physical conditions of the measurement system, such as the degree of attenuation and sample-to-detector distance, as well as impact of the neural network (NN) design on the algorithm performance. Tests are conducted on uranium spectra of CBNM certified standards with enrichment degrees from 0.31% up to 4.46% of 235 U atomic abundance measured with different statistical quality, as well as on simulated uranium spectra with a broad range of enrichment degrees. Room temperature semiconductor detectors of CdZnTe type have been proposed as possible alternatives to spectrometers based on HPGe and NaI detectors. Attractive spectroscopic performance and portability, as well as continuous improvements in their design and availability in different sizes make them especially competitive in various radiation measurement applications where absence of cooling, small size and significantly better resolution compared to other room temperature detectors are an asset. Among these applications are nuclear safeguards that include uranium and plutonium isotopic composition determination tasks. This paper focuses on the investigation of possibilities and limits of a net peak area based methodology used for the determination of the uranium enrichment without use of calibration standards. Tests are conducted on a room temperature medium resolution spectrometer based on a 500 mm 3 CdZnTe sensor of a quasi-hemispherical design using which spectra of different statistical quality are obtained from certified uranium standards. Gamma-ray peaks in the 143–1001 keV energy range are used as uranium gamma-ray signatures. Performance assessment of an intrinsic calibration of the counting efficiency curve is conducted. A hybrid methodology based on a combination of the peak ratios method with Monte Carlo simulations of the counting efficiency curve is proposed for poor quality spectra. Purpose: This paper studies the feasibility of using Monte Carlo (MC) for treatment planning of intraoperative electron radiation therapy (IOERT) procedure to get 3D dose by using patient's CT images. Methods: The IOERT treatment planning was performed using the following successive steps: I) The Mobetron 1000® machine was modelled with the EGSnrc MC codes. II) The MC model was validated with measurements of percentage depth doses and profiles for three energies (12, 9, 6) MeV. III) CT images were imported as DICOM files. IV) Contouring of the planning target volume (PTV) and the organs at risk was done by the radiation oncologist. V) The medical physicist with the radiation oncologist, had chosen the same parameters of IOERT procedures like energy, applicator (type, size) and using or not bolus. VI) Finally, dose calculation and analysis of 3D maps was carried out. Results: The tuning process of the MC model provides good results, as the maximum value of the root mean square deviation (RMSD) was less than 3% between the MC simulated PDDs and the measured PDDs. The contouring and dose analysis review were easy to conduct for the classical treatment planning system. The radiation oncologist had many tools for dose analysis such as DVH and color wash for all the slides. Summation of the 3D dose of IOERT with other radiotherapy plans is possible and helpful for total dose estimation. Archiving and documentation is as good as treatment planning system (TPS). SUMMARYSoil salinity is one of the most important abiotic stresses affecting plant growth. In legumes, symbiotic nitrogen fixation in nodules is affected by salt stress, and salinity tolerance is variable among species. Genes from the High affinity K+Transporter (HKT) family are known to play crucial roles in salt stress tolerance in different plant species. In legumes these transporters are still very poorly characterized.. Here we study the HKT transporter family from the model legumeMedicago trunacatula, which is moderately tolerant to salinity. The genome of this species comprises fiveHKTgenes, hereafter namedMtHKT1;1toMtHKT1;5. Phylogenetic analysis indicated that the MtHKT polypeptides belong to HKT subfamily 1. Three members (MtHKT1;2, MtHKT1;4andMtHKT1;5) of theMedicago truncatulafamily were cloned and expressed inXenopusoocytes. Their electrophysiological properties revealed a permeability 10 times higher for Na+than for K+and varying rectification properties. Expression analyses of the threeMtHKTgenes under different biotic and abiotic conditions suggested that MtHKT1;5 is the main transporter from this family in the root, the three genes sharing a decrease of expression in drought and salt stress conditions in non inoculated plants as well as plants inoculated with rhizobia. In the shoot, the three MtHKT would be present at similar levels independently on the applied stresses. Based on biomass and ion content analysis, the nodule appeared as the most sensitive organ to the applied salt and drought stresses. The level of expression of the threeMtHKTgenes was strongly decreased by both stresses in the nodule.

In recent years room temperature medium resolution scintillation devices, such as LaBr3(Ce), have attracted much interest as possible alternatives to traditional spectrometers based on HPGe and NaI detectors, for the determination of the uranium enrichment in safeguards applications. This paper focuses on the investigation of possibilities and limits of a net peak area based methodology used for the determination of the uranium enrichment without use of calibration standards and introduces the isotopic code MCSIGMA for LaBr3(Ce) scintillators. Tests are conducted with a room temperature, medium resolution spectrometer based on a 2×2 inch LaBr3(Ce) scintillator using which spectra of different statistical quality are obtained from certified uranium standards. Gamma peaks in the 143-1001keV energy range are used as uranium gamma-ray signatures. Results indicate a promising performance of the applied methodology with a room temperature medium resolution scintillator of the LaBr3(Ce) type, however at a cost of significantly higher uncertainty budget on the derived enrichment compared to HPGe, especially for natural and depleted uranium samples. This uncertainty budget is primarily influenced by the statistical quality of the measured spectra. The performance of the energy degrader in terms of beam properties directly impacts the design and cost of cyclotron-based proton therapy centers. The aim of this study is to evaluate the performances of different existing and novel degrader materials. The quantitative estimate is based on detailed GEANT4 simulations that analyze the beam-matter interaction and provide a determination of the beam emittance increase and transmission. Comparisons between existing (aluminum, graphite, beryllium) and novel (boron carbide and diamond) degrader materials are provided and evaluated against semi-analytical models of multiple Coulomb scattering. Quantitative interpretation of structures observed in XPS and AES requires models to correct for various physical processes involved. Besides the initial excitation process in XPS and AES, the measured spectrum is affected by three additional effects: the corehole(s), transport to the surface region and passage through the surface and vacuum regions. These three effects can be calculated by the QUEELS-XPS software (Quantitative analysis of Electron Energy Losses at Surfaces) in terms of energy-differential inelastic electron scattering cross sections. From this and the QUASES software (Quantitative Analysis of Surfaces by Electron Spectroscopy), background contributions and primary excitation spectra are obtained for various transitions (Cu 2p from Cu or CuO and Cu L3M23M23) and we investigate the separate effect of bulk, surface, and core hole(s) excitations. We show that the shape of the XPS and AES primary spectra and background contributions are modified slightly by surface effects and very strongly by core hole(s) effects. For metals, the intrinsic excitations give rise to a prominent spike in the background close to the XPS-peak energy. This spike will be much reduced for wide band gap insulators. Moreover our method gives an easy procedure to obtain the true primary excitation spectra for XPS and AES.

The Self-Interrogation Neutron Resonance Densitometry (SINRD) is a passive non-destructive assay (NDA) technique that is proposed for the direct measurement of 239Pu in a spent fuel assembly. The insertion of neutron detectors wrapped with different neutron absorbing materials, or neutron filters, in the central guide tube of a PWR fuel assembly is envisaged to measure the neutron flux in the energy region close to the 0.3 eV resonance of 239Pu. In addition, the measurement of the fast neutron flux is foreseen. This paper is focused on the determination of the Gd and Cd neutron filters thickness to maximize the detection of neutrons within the resonance region. Moreover, several detector types are compared to identify the optimal condition and to assess the expected total neutron counts that can be obtained with the SINRD measurements. Results from Monte Carlo simulations showed that ranges between 0.1–0.3 mm and 0.5–1.0 mm ensure the optimal conditions for the Gd and Cd filters, respectively. Moreover, a 239Pu fission chamber is better suited to measure neutrons close to the 0.3 eV resonance and it has the highest sensitivity to 239Pu, in comparison with a 235U fission chamber, with a 3He proportional counter, and with a 10B proportional counter. The use of a thin Gd filter and a thick Cd filter is suggested for the 239Pu and 235U fission chambers to increase the total counts achieved in a measurement, while a thick Gd filter and a thin Cd filter are envisaged for the 3He and 10B proportional counters to increase the sensitivity to 239Pu. We concluded that an optimization process that takes into account measurement time, filters thickness, and detector size is needed to develop a SINRD detector that can meet the requirement for an efficient verification of spent fuel assemblies.

Nowadays, there is interest in developing gamma-ray measuring devices based on the room temperature operated medium resolution detectors such as semiconductor detectors of the CdZnTe type and scintillators of the LaBr3 type. This is true also for safeguards applications and the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) has launched a project devoted to the assessment of medium resolution gamma-ray spectroscopy for the verification of the isotopic composition of U and Pu bearing samples. This project is carried out within the Non-Destructive Assay Working Group of the European Safeguards Research and Development Association (ESARDA). In this study we analyze medium resolution spectra of U and Pu standards with the aim to develop an isotopic composition determination algorithm, particularly suited for these types of detectors. We show how the peak shape of a CdZnTe detector is influenced by the instrumentation parameters. The experimental setup consisted of a 500 mm3 CdZnTe detector, a 2×2 inch LaBr3 detector, two types of measurement instrumentation - an analogue one and a digital one, and a set of certified samples - a 207Bi point source and U and Pu CBNM standards. The results of our measurements indicate that the lowest contribution to the peak asymmetry and thus the smallest impact on the resolution of the 500 mm3 CdZnTe detector was achieved with the digital MCA. Analysis of acquired spectra allowed to reject poor quality measurement runs and produce summed spectra files with the least impact of instrumentation instabilities. Determination of the uranium enrichment is an important safeguards verification task, routinely carried out using non-destructive assay methods. The enrichment-meter method is one of the most widely used passive non-destructive X- and gamma-ray based methods used for such tasks. Among its advantages is the highly constrained physical nature of its underlying formalism, allowing it to be used with high-resolution HPGe detectors, as well as with low-resolution NaI detectors. Due to attractive features and spectroscopic performance, CdZnTe and LaBr3(Ce) detectors raised interest in their application to such tasks as well. However, their spectroscopic performance is different to that of the traditional detectors in many ways. Application of the enrichment-meter method requires determination of the net peak areas corresponding to 235U signature photopeaks. The latter requires an adequate algorithm to select the region-of-interest boundaries, which may be sensitive to asymmetrical photopeaks of CZT detectors. In this paper we conduct a performance assessment of a 500 mm3 CZT detector of a quasi-hemispherical design and a 2 × 2 inch LaBr3(Ce) scintillator with the enrichment-meter method using a set of certified uranium standards with enrichment degrees from 0.31% to 4.46% of 235U atomic abundance. We investigate the impact of different methods used for net peak area determination, statistical quality of acquired spectra and size of region-of-interest boundaries on accuracy and uncertainty. We propose an algorithm for symmetrical/asymmetrical region-of-interest boundaries determination and make recommendations on the best combinations of the region-of-interest size and method used for the net peak area determination for each of the detectors. Purpose During last decades many radiotherapy machines, treatment planning systems (TPS) and complicated treatment techniques (VMAT, IMRT, SBRT) have been developed. Fast dose calculation algorithms are used for radiotherapy, applying many approximations during dose calculation to minimize calculation time. The main objective of this presentation is to present how to implement Monte Carlo in clinical daily quality control of TPS and machine performance. Methods EGSnrc ⧹ BEAMnrc were used to create a model of the Agility (Elekta) by using the data provided by the manufacturer. Validation of the MC model was done using the methodology of Pena[1]. Comparison of standard treatment plans between MC treatment planning system and measurements was necessary to verify moving parts of the machine. Converting RTplan DICOM files to MC input files and converting MC dose matrix file to a DICOM file were done using the Moderato platform [2]. Impacts of variance reduction techniques, voxel size and simulating volume were well investigated to minimize calculation time. Homemade MATLAB code was used to extract the data from machine log files which was used as input for MC simulation. Results Validation of MC model was within 2% when comparing to measurement for all PDDs, profiles and output factors of different fields sizes. Good agreement was obtained between TPS algorithm and MC for most of the cases, but small differences were found for small lung lesions, as MC and TPS do not use same cut off energy of secondary electrons. TPS and MC plans using machine log files have a good agreement for all patients. 30 min as max of calculation time and 1% uncertainty for all planning treatment volumes (PTVs) are respected for all patients. The system is currently being extended to use it with other external radiotherapy machines like Clinac® (Varian) and Gamma Knife (Elekta) for double calculation and delivered dose verification. Conclusions Monte Carlo has been used to validate TPS plans as well as performance of the external radiotherapy machine (Agility (Elekta)). Beside to measurements, MC as independent quality control tool is important for complicated treatment techniques.

The energy loss function (ELF) is a key parameter for the calculations of energy losses undergone by electrons in matter. It is often the only input in the calculations performed within the models based on the semi-classical dielectric response theory. Its perfect knowledge is thus of primordial importance. To evaluate the ELF, it is usual to consider as a model an expansion in Drude-Lindhard (DL) type oscillators with fixed values of the strength, width, energy and dispersion for the various oscillators. However, for materials that are characterized by a single sharp oscillator as aluminium or indium, it has been shown [Phys. Rev. B 46 (1992) 2486] that the damping parameter that corresponds in the DL model to the width of the oscillator increases for decreasing incident electron energy. To emphasize this effect, we perform in this work systematic calculation of the ELF for an indium target and for incident electron energies between 200 and 2000-eV. The ELF is determined by comparing REELS (reflection electron energy loss spectroscopy) experimental inelastic electron scattering cross sections with cross sections calculated within the semi-classical dielectric response model, which is implemented in the QUEELS-e(k,ω)-REELS software (Quantitative analysis of Electron Energy Losses at Surfaces) [Surf. Interface Anal. 36 (2004) 824]. We also perform measurements and calculations for varying incident and exit angles of the electron, namely for angles to the surface normal between 15o and 75o, to check the validity of our results for all geometries. Our results show that the damping parameter of indium in the DL model for electron energy of 200-eV is three times larger than for energy of 2000-eV. Copyright © 2014 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

The shape and intensity of photoelectron peaks are strongly affected by extrinsic excitations due to electron transport out of the surface and by intrinsic excitations induced by the sudden creation of the static core hole. Besides, elastic electron scattering may also be important. These effects should be included in the theoretical description of the emitted photoelectron peaks. To investigate the importance of surface and core hole effects relative to elastic scattering effect, we have calculated full XPS spectra for the Cu 2p emissions of Cu and CuO with the simulation of electron spectra for surface analysis (SESSA) software and with a convolution procedure using the differential inelastic electron scattering cross-section obtained with the quantitative analysis of electron energy loss in XPS (QUEELS-XPS) software. Surface and core hole effects are included in QUEELS-XPS but absent in SESSA while elastic electron scattering effects are included in SESSA but absent in QUEELS-XPS. Our results show that the shape of the XPS spectra are strongly modified because of surface and core hole effects, especially for energy losses smaller than about 20 eV. Monte Carlo codes have become an essential tool for studying the radiation protection of particle accelerator facilities such as a proton therapy center. The MCNPX code is well adapted for shielding study but the GEANT4 toolkit is also a suitable solution. Benchmark simulations – secondary-particle production and attenuation – and shielding calculations for a proton therapy center show that both codes provide results in good agreement.

International audience; Leguminous biological nitrogen fixation (BNF) is very sensitive to environmental fluctuations. It is still contentious how BNF is regulated under stress conditions. The local or systemic control of BNF and the role played by reactive oxygen species (ROS) in such regulation have still not been elucidated completely. Cadmium, which belongs to the so-called heavy metals, is one of the most toxic substances released into the environment. The mechanisms involved in Cd toxicity are still not completely understood but the overproduction of ROS is one of its characteristic symptoms. In this work, we used a split-root system approach to study nodule BNF and the antioxidant machinerys response to the application of a mild Cd treatment on one side of a nodulated Medicago truncatula root system. Cd induced the majority of nodule antioxidants without generating any oxidative damage. Cd treatment also provoked BNF inhibition exclusively in nodules directly exposed to Cd, without provoking any effect on plant shoot biomass or chlorophyll content. The overall data suggest that the decline in BNF was not due to a generalized breakdown of the plant but to control exerted through leghaemoglobin/oxygen availability, affecting nitrogenase function.

Optical properties and electronic transitions of four oxides, namely zinc oxide, ferric oxide, cerium oxide, and samarium oxide, are determined in the ultraviolet and extreme ultraviolet by reflection electron energy loss spectroscopy using primary electron energies in the range 0.3–2.0 keV. This technique allows the evaluation of the optical response in these ultraviolet spectral regions of a thin layer of material, and the analysis is straightforward. It is performed within the dielectric response theory by means of the QUEELS-ϵ(k, ω)-REELS software developed by Tougaard and Yubero [Surf. Interface Anal. 36, 824 (2004)]. The method consists basically in the fitting of experimentally determined single-scattering electron energy loss cross sections with a parametric energy loss function of the corresponding material, to the one calculated within a dielectric response formalism. International audience; Arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) symbiosis is stimulated by phosphorus (P) limitation and contributes to P and nitrogen (N) acquisition. However, the effects of combined P and N limitation on AM formation are largely unknown. Medicago truncatula plants were cultivated in the presence or absence of Rhizophagus irregularis (formerly Glomus intraradices) in P-limited (LP), N-limited (LN) or combined P- and N-limited (LPN) conditions, and compared with plants grown in sufficient P and N. The highest AM formation was observed in LPN, linked to systemic signaling by the plant nutrient status. Plant free phosphate concentrations were higher in LPN than in LP, as a result of cross-talk between P and N. Transcriptome analyses suggest that LPN induces the activation of NADPH oxidases in roots, concomitant with an altered profile of plant defense genes and a coordinate increase in the expression of genes involved in the methylerythritol phosphate and isoprenoid-derived pathways, including strigolactone synthesis genes. Taken together, these results suggest that low P and N fertilization systemically induces a physiological state of plants favorable for AM symbiosis despite their higher P status. Our findings highlight the importance of the plant nutrient status in controlling plant-fungus interaction.

Identification of specific chemical states and local electronic environments at surfaces by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) is often difficult because it is not straightforward to quantitatively interpret the shape and intensity of shake-up structures that originate from the photoexcitation process. Indeed the shape and intensity of measured XPS structures are strongly affected by both extrinsic excitations due to electron transport out of the surface and intrinsic excitations induced by the sudden creation of the static core hole. These processes must be taken into account to quantitatively extract, from experimental XPS, the primary excitation spectrum of the considered transition which includes all effects that are part of the initial photo-excitation process, i.e. lifetime broadening, spin–orbit coupling, and multiplet splitting. It was previously shown [N. Pauly, S. Tougaard, F. Yubero, Surf. Sci. 620 (2014) 17] that both extrinsic and intrinsic excitations could be included in an effective energy-differential inelastic electron scattering cross section for XPS which is then convoluted with the primary excitation spectrum to model the full XPS spectrum. This method can thus be applied to determine the primary excitation spectrum from any XPS spectrum. We use this approach in the present paper to determine the Au 4f and Ag 3d photoemission spectra from pure metals. We observe that characteristic energy loss features of the XPS spectra are not only due to photoelectron energy losses. We thus prove the existence of a double shake-up process characterized by a 4d → 5s/5p transition for Ag and a 5d → 6s/6p transition for Au. We finally accurately quantify the energy position and intensity of these shake-up peaks., The research leading to these results has received funding from MINECO (Spain), grant no. International audience; Root hairs are involved in water and nutrient uptake, and thereby in plant autotrophy. In legumes, they also play a crucial role in establishment of rhizobial symbiosis. To obtain a holistic view of Medicago truncatula genes expressed in root hairs and of their regulation during the first hours of the engagement in rhizobial symbiotic interaction, a high throughput RNA sequencing on isolated root hairs from roots challenged or not with lipochitooligosaccharides Nod factors (NF) for 4 or 20 h was carried out. This provided a repertoire of genes displaying expression in root hairs, responding or not to NF, and specific or not to legumes. In analyzing the transcriptome dataset, special attention was paid to pumps, transporters, or channels active at the plasma membrane, to other proteins likely to play a role in nutrient ion uptake, NF electrical and calcium signaling, control of the redox status or the dynamic reprogramming of root hair transcriptome induced by NF treatment, and to the identification of papilionoid legume-specific genes expressed in root hairs. About 10% of the root hair expressed genes were significantly up- or down-regulated by NF treatment, suggesting their involvement in remodeling plant functions to allow establishment of the symbiotic relationship. For instance, NF-induced changes in expression of genes encoding plasma membrane transport systems or disease response proteins indicate that root hairs reduce their involvement in nutrient ion absorption and adapt their immune system in order to engage in the symbiotic interaction. It also appears that the redox status of root hair cells is tuned in response to NF perception. In addition, 1176 genes that could be considered as "papilionoid legume-specific" were identified in the M. truncatula root hair transcriptome, from which 141 were found to possess an ortholog in every of the six legume genomes that we considered, suggesting their involvement in essential functions specific to legumes. This transcriptome provides a valuable resource to investigate root hair biology in legumes and the roles that these cells play in rhizobial symbiosis establishment. These results could also contribute to the long-term objective of transferring this symbiotic capacity to non-legume plants.
