Round brown process-bearing cysts (RBPC) produced by dinoflagellates (Dinophyceae) occur as an important part of assemblage diversities in seafloor sediments worldwide. Here a new species, Islandinium pacificum, is described from surface sediment samples from coastal waters of British Columbia (Canada). Additional observations are made on material from the Holocene of Kyuquot Sound (Vancouver Island, Canada) and the Eemian of the Voring Plateau (North Atlantic). The cysts have a smooth wall and bear acuminate processes with barbs. Incubation experiments reveal an affinity with the motile stage Protoperidinium mutsuense. The ecology of the new species is specified.

The Koster Trench is the deepest part of the Kosterfjord (Skagerrak, North Sea), which stretches southward along the west coast of Sweden. Since 2009 Kosterfjord has been included in the Marine Protected Area Kosterhavet National Park. To effectively manage national parks, long-term time series of ecological data are needed and those can be derived from local sediment archives. In this study we present multiproxy geochemical (bulk TOC, C/N and heavy metals) and micropaleontological (dinoflagellate cysts, selected palynomorphs and benthic foraminifera) data from a sediment core taken in the southern part of the Koster Trench. Radiometric dating by 210Pb and 137Cs shows that the core archived the environmental changes that took place between 1988 and 2012. The TOC, heavy metals and foraminiferal indices indicate mainly high to good Ecological Quality Status, with moderate ecological quality for arsenic concentrations. Dinoflagellate cysts suggest a major change occurring in the upper water column around 2002. The cysts of Pentapharsodinium dalei peak around 1992 and show overall slightly higher relative abundances between 1988 and 2002. Increased abundance of Biecheleria baltica cysts, heterotrophic species, oligotrichids, pollen and spores characterise the upper core part deposited from 2002 to 2012. Also, there is a clear increase of Alexandrium cysts in the top of the core (~2008–2012). Benthic foraminifera show a major faunal change reflected in a significant increase of agglutinated species (mainly Textularia earlandi) from 2007 towards present day, while the lower part of the core (1988–2007) is dominated by calcareous species. Overall, the changes demonstrated by the dataset suggest an increased freshwater input or a higher river/land runoff, as supported by climatic and hydrographical data showing increased precipitation over the study area, decreasing salinity, and an increasing trend in particulate organic carbon in the surface waters. These changes, in combination with trawling activities, which have been moved to the deepest part of the trench since 2009, seem to favour dinoflagellate and benthic foraminiferal species with mixotrophic and omnivorous feeding strategies. Similar to the dinocysts, calculated foram-AMBI and NQIforam indices show a shift around 2002 suggesting that environmental changes occurring in the study area are likely linked to darkening of coastal waters.

The Koster Trench is the deepest part of the Kosterfjord (Skagerrak, North Sea), which stretches southward along the west coast of Sweden. Since 2009 Kosterfjord has been included in the Marine Protected Area Kosterhavet National Park due to the presence of cold-water coral reefs. In this study we present multiproxy data from the sediment core KSK12-01D taken in the southern part of the Koster Trench. Increased abundance of cysts produced by Protoceratium reticulatum (i.e. Operculodinium centrocarpum sensu Wall and Dale 1966), cysts produced by Biecheleria baltica and heterotrophic dinoflagellates, oligotrichids, pollen and spores characterise the upper core part deposited from 2002 to 2012. Furthermore, there is a clear increase of calcareous Alexandrium cysts in the top of the core (~2008-2012). Benthic foraminifera show a major faunal change reflected in a drastic increase of agglutinated species (mainly Textularia earlandi) from 2007 towards present day, while the lower part of the core (1988-2007) is dominated by calcareous species (Stainforthia fusiformis, Epistominella exigua, Cassidulina laevigata, Bulimina marginata andHyalinea balthica). Overall, the changes in the dataset suggest an increased freshwater input or a higher river/land runoff, as supported by a local climate and hydrography data showing increasing precipitation and particulate organic carbon in the surface waters over the time period covered by our record.

We restudied the morphological complex comprising the cyst-based species Spiniferites elongatus/Spiniferites frigidus/Rottnestia amphicavata. We reviewed existing studies, and acquired new morphometric measurements of recent cysts from across the Northern Hemisphere, scanning electron microscopy (SEM) observations of cysts from Barents Sea surface sediments, and genetic analyses of cysts from the Beaufort Sea. The measurements suggest that populations and morphospecies cannot be distinguished based on morphometric criteria. Furthermore, sequential sediment trap samples from Hudson Bay reveal that morphological variation can occur at the same location over a few weeks, arguing against a uniform morphological response to environmental parameters. The SEM observations reveal a consistent gonyaulacacean tabulation (Po, 4′, 6′′, 6c, 5 s, *6′′′, 1p, 1′′′′). The small and large subunit ribosomal RNA genes and the internal transcribed spacer sequences obtained from differing cysts from the Beaufort Sea with morphologies attributable to the complex, including forms that correspond to Rottnestia amphicavata, were all identical and conform to those of Gonyaulax elongata from the Orkney Islands. The molecular analyses thus support the conclusion that the morphological variability is not reflected genetically and occurs within one species. Based on arguments against the generic attribution of amphicavata to Rottnestia, the continuum between the extreme ends of the morphological range, and the molecular data, we suggest Rottnestia amphicavata to be conspecific with Spiniferites frigidus, and both to be junior synonyms of Spiniferites elongatus. The morphometric data further indicate that Spiniferites ellipsoideus, an elongate cyst from the Miocene, can also be considered a junior synonym of Spiniferites elongatus. It is recommended to use two informal types in census work (i.e. Spiniferites elongatus – Beaufort morphotype for morphologies formerly assignable to Spiniferites frigidus/Rottnestia amphicavata, and Spiniferites elongatus – Norwegian morphotype for cysts with strongly reduced processes) to separate specimens at both extreme ends of the morphological spectrum from typical specimens of Spiniferites elongatus.

Organic-walled resting cysts of planktonic dinoflagellates occur commonly in modern marine sediment where they represent, with rare exceptions, the only geologically preservable part of the life cycle. Although many species do not produce fossilizable resting cysts, upper Quaternary sediments contain a diverse cyst record that is used frequently for paleoenvironmental reconstruction and stratigraphic analysis. Reconstructions of past sea-surface conditions rely on an understanding of the distributions of dinoflagellate cysts in modern sediments linked to their respective environmental parameters, underpinned by sound taxonomy and standardized nomenclature. Stratigraphic studies additionally require knowledge of morphological details to distinguish extant from similar extinct taxa. Here, 51 dinoflagellate cyst species and two informal cyst morphotypes that are commonly encountered during routine palynological analysis of upper Quaternary marine sediments from the Northern Hemisphere are briefly described taxonomically and illustrated. In addition, their lowest stratigraphic occurrences are provided.

We attempt to assess the Holocene surface-subsurface seawater density gradient on millennial time scale based on the reconstruction of potential density (σθ) by combining data from dinoflagellate cyst assemblages and planktic foraminiferal (Neogloboquadrina pachyderma (s)) stable oxygen isotopes (δ18Oc). Following several calibration exercises, the likeliness of favorable seasonal preconditioning to open ocean convection is evaluated. The reconstructed σθ values reveal unfavorable conditions for vertical convection in the western Nordic Seas prior to ~7–6.5 ka B.P., with a westward increase and persistence of surface water buoyancy. Active overturning became more likely after 6.5 ka B.P. as suggested by a reduced and recurrently inverted vertical σθ gradient, while intermittent eastward spreading of lower density surface waters continued to modulate the area of potential overturning. Despite some reservation regarding the accuracy of the σθ values reconstructed, the documentation of relative changes of σθ gradients through time and space is suggested as a helpful tool for the appraisal of past overturning likeliness.

We present a new version of the standardized Northern Hemisphere “modern” dinoflagellate cyst (“dinocyst”) database, which includes abundances of 71 taxa at 1968 sites across the Northern Hemisphere, cross-referenced with 17 environmental parameters extracted mostly from the 2013 World Ocean Atlas. Several taxa with tropical to warm temperate affinities were added to the previous database version. Dinocyst concentrations in the surface sediments reach 106 cysts g−1, with maximum values along the continental margins and minimum values offshore in distal open ocean settings. Assemblages are characterized by the co-occurrence of phototrophic (n = 41) and heterotrophic taxa (n = 30), with maximum proportions of heterotrophic taxa in high productivity regions, notably at the sea-ice edge and in upwelling regions. The main pattern of assemblage distributions includes north–south and nearshore–offshore gradients, with maximum diversity of species along the continental margins and towards the south, in warm temperate and tropical areas. Canonical correspondence analyses performed on heterotrophic and phototrophic taxa independently yield consistent results, hence suggesting similar, but not identical, ecological affinities for both taxonomic groups. For both groups, sea-surface temperature and sea-ice are the most determining parameters, but the phototrophic taxa seem more sensitive to onshore–offshore gradients marked by salinity changes. Productivity-related parameters also determine dinocyst distribution, especially primary productivity in the fall and winter, with a stronger relationship for the combined dataset of phototrophic and heterotrophic taxa.

Dinoflagellate resting cysts with rare exception produce the only discrete link between the biology of extant dinoflagellate species and their fossil record. The geological preservability of such cysts allows them to be used for quantitative paleoecological reconstructions, especially in the Quaternary, and for biostratigraphy and the calibration of molecular clocks with the geological record. This contribution reviews and updates the taxonomy of 27 uncommon dinoflagellate cyst species and morphotypes belonging to the orders Gonyaulacales and Suessiales with occurrences in upper Quaternary marine sediments of the Northern Hemisphere. Comparative descriptions and illustrations are provided along with the biological affinity of each taxon where known and lowest stratigraphic occurrence.

In marine sediments of late Cenozoic age, Spiniferites is a very common genus of dinoflagellate cysts (dinocysts). Despite some taxonomical ambiguities due to large range of morphological variations within given species and convergent morphologies between different species, the establishment of an operational taxonomy permitted to develop a standardized modern database of dinocysts for the mid-high latitudes of the Northern Hemisphere. In the database that includes 1490 surface sediment samples, Spiniferites mirabilis-hyperacanthus, Spiniferites ramosus and Spiniferites elongatus were counted in addition to Spiniferites belerius, Spiniferites bentorii, Spiniferites bulloideus, Spiniferites delicatus, Spiniferites lazus and Spiniferites membranaceus. Among these taxa, Spiniferites mirabilis-hyperacanthus, Spiniferites ramosus, and Spiniferites elongatus are easy to identify and are particularly common. Spiniferites bentorii and Spiniferites delicatus also are morphologically distinct and occur in relatively high percentages in many samples. Spiniferites lazus and Spiniferites membranaceus also bear distinctive features, but occur only in a few samples. The identification of other taxa (Spiniferites belerius, Spiniferites bulloideus, notably) may be equivocal and their reported distribution has to be used with caution. The spatial distribution of Spiniferites species, with emphasis on the five most common taxa, is documented here with reference to hydrography (salinity and temperature in winter and summer, sea ice cover), primary productivity and geographical setting (bathymetry, distance to the coastline). The results demonstrate distinct ecological affinities for Spiniferites elongatus, which has an Arctic-subarctic distribution and appears abundant in low productivity environments characterized by winter sea ice and large temperature contrast between winter and summer. Spiniferites mirabilis-hyperacanthus, which occurs in warm temperate water sites, is more abundant in high salinity environments. It shares its environmental domain with Spiniferites bentorii, which appears to have a narrower distribution towards the warm and high salinity end of the Spiniferites mirabilis-hyperacanthus distribution. In contrast, Spiniferites delicatus, which occurs in warm-temperate to tropical environments, shows preference for relatively low salinity and low seasonal contrasts of temperature. Spiniferites ramosus exhibits a particularly wide distribution that overlaps both cold and warm Spiniferites taxa. Its cosmopolitan occurrence and its long-ranging biostratigraphical distribution suggest a high plasticity of the species and/or co-occurrence of several cryptic species. Hence, whereas Spiniferites elongatus and Spiniferites mirabilis-hyperacanthus are useful palaeoecological indicators despite their large morphological variability, Spiniferites ramosus is a taxon with an unconstrained ecological significance.

Dinoflagellate cyst assemblages in a marine sediment core from the Iceland Basin were used to carry out qualitative and quantitative assessments of upper ocean conditions in the northern branch of the Subpolar Gyre (SPG) during the Holocene. The data revealed that the early Holocene, i.e. prior to similar to 6.8 kyr B.P., experienced elevated summer sea surface temperatures (SST). In contrast, winter SST was lower compared to modern conditions. This stronger-than-present seasonality revealed by our data thus shows the influence of the early Holocene insolation forcing. Higher seasonality also dominated the reconstructed sea surface salinity (SSS) in the same period, with lower salinity during both summers and winters. The lower SSS suggests freshwater advection into the SPG, and the dinoflagellate cyst content from this interval indicates a dominant sourcing from the Canadian Labrador coast, and thus the eastern margin of the Laurentide Ice Sheet. Within this interval of low SSS, the onset of the Holocene Climate Optimum stands out by its distinct "marine" assemblage components and associated high summer SST and relative SSS increase between 9.3 and 7.8 kyr B.P. A prominent shift in the overall assemblage composition occurs at 6.8 kyr B.P., with lower seasonality in sea surface conditions from that time onwards. Increased summer and winter SSS suggest that this change is linked to the halted influence of meltwater from the Laurentide Ice Sheet, a westward shift of the subpolar front and a contracted SPG allowing an easier northward movement of southern-sourced North Atlantic waters, contributing to and consequently sustained by the spin-up of the overturning circulation. The subpolar front appears to gradually have moved slightly eastward again between 2.8 and 1.9 kyr B.P. towards its modern-day position, with a subtle increase of elements characterized by a typical East Greenland Current signature in the Iceland Basin. Finally, spectral analyses indicate that a range of periodicities may be present in the new SSS and SST records, most notably a 2000-yr periodicity in SSS changes, although none of the periodicities are dominant in both records or throughout the time interval covered by the records.

Dinoflagellate cyst (dinocyst) records from the southern Nordic Seas were compiled in order to evaluate the evolution of upper ocean conditions, on a millennial timescale and supported by a highly resolved record from the Vøring Plateau. After the transitional phase from the last deglaciation, three main phases define the Holocene. The early Holocene (>7.5 ka BP) features important numbers of cool-temperate species dominated by Nematosphaeropsis labyrinthus and Impagidinium pallidum in the west. The assemblage composition changes drastically at the transition from the early to the mid-Holocene, from when on Operculodinium centrocarpum dominates. The changeover is dated between ~6.1 and 7.5 ka BP, perhaps earlier closer to the Iceland–Scotland Ridge, and appears to be linked to the onset of a modern type of surface circulation. ‘Warmest’ assemblages occur at the Vøring Plateau shortly after the transition, when Atlantic waters also appear to have spread farthest westward. The recurrence of colder elements can be linked to cooling from ~2.4 ka BP at the Vøring Plateau and presumably earlier in the west but is difficult to date there because of the low sedimentation rates. This is a general issue in many areas of the Nordic Seas and appears to have an important effect on cyst concentrations and assemblage composition, with the possible loss of oxygenation-sensitive cysts in the older parts of the cores. Comparing dinocyst-based quantitative reconstructions with those retrieved from other plankton reveals a significantly different trend between proxies, linked to a differing autecological response to seasonal changes at their respective depth habitats.

Atmospheric circulation may change with future climate change in response to modification of meridional temperature gradients, but the potential influence on ocean circulation is as yet unclear. Over the mid-late Holocene, atmospheric circulation in the North Atlantic region has fluctuated on millennial timescales; therefore, the ocean response to these changes can be investigated using the paleoceanographic records that have been developed in the north-eastern subpolar North Atlantic. Here, we present a diatom-based sea surface temperature reconstruction from the Iceland Basin, south of Iceland; the reconstruction shows the warmest temperatures of the record at 6.1–4 ka BP, cooler temperatures at 4-2 ka BP and warmer temperatures thereafter. Inter-record comparisons indicate that the cold period at c. 4-2 ka BP may have resulted from a strengthened East Greenland Current and/or melting of the Greenland ice sheet, in response to a negative North Atlantic Oscillation. The findings highlight that atmospheric circulation changes are likely to cause pronounced variations in the latitudinal exchange of heat, which may have consequences for deep-water formation and global ocean circulation.

Palynological analyses are used in conjunction with oxygen isotopes and Mg/Ca ratios in foraminifers in order to document the response of dinoflagellate cysts (dinocysts) assemblages to changing climate conditions in the northeastern Gulf of Mexico over the Holocene and late Pleistocene. During MIS 6, but also during the cooler phases of MIS 5, Impagidinium species and Operculodinium centrocarpum were dominating the assemblages. By contrast, during the last interglacial (LIG) and the Holocene, assemblages were mainly composed of Spiniferites taxa and characterized by high relative abundance of Spiniferites mirabilis-hyperacanthus , Operculodinium israelianum and/or Polysphaeridium zoharyi . These two periods exhibit ~ 1-2 °C difference in temperature as inferred from Mg/Ca ratios and show significantly distinct assemblages, with higher percentages of S. mirabilis during the LIG and higher percentages of P. zoharyi during the Holocene. This likely denotes important differences in the hydrogeographical conditions (e.g. surface circulation, bathymetric configuration) between the present and last interglacial. The importance of environmental parameters other than temperature and salinity for dinocyst assemblage dynamics is furthermore illustrated.

Round brown spiny dinoflagellate cysts from high latitudes of the Northern Hemisphere have been examined in order to define criteria for their determination during routine counts. The round brown spiny cysts belong to several taxa including the paleontological genera Echinidinium and Islandinium and the biological genera Oblea , Polykrikos , and Protoperidinium . Here, we present a synthesis of descriptions with remarks on the morphology, taxonomy, nomenclature and ecology of cysts from the observations of samples collected in high latitude environments. These observations have led us to establish a practical identification key based on the most distinct morphological features that characterize all specimens. These features exclude the archeopyle, which is rarely observed. Two new cyst types are described from Holocene and Pleistocene sediments of the North Pacific and North Atlantic oceans, respectively. The identification key permits the following to be distinguished: “ Echinidinium aculeatum ”, Echinidinium delicatum , Echinidinium granulatum , Echinidinium karaense , Echinidinium sleipnerensis , Echinidinium “ transparantum ” /zonneveldiae , Islandinium brevispinosum , Islandinium ? cezare , and Islandinium minutum , the cysts of Oblea acanthocysta and Polykrikos hartmannii (al. Pheopolykrikos hartmannii ), and the new cyst types Echinidinium ? sp. A and Echinidinium ? sp. B.

Dinoflagellate cyst (dinocyst), coccolith and planktic foraminiferal assemblages from a core in the western Iceland Sea were used to reconstruct and compare the surface ocean developments of the Holocene and the Last Interglacial (Marine Isotopic Stage or MIS 5e). While increasing subpolar planktic foraminifers from ~ 10 ka indicate subsurface warming peaking around 7.5 ka, the dinocyst data suggest that the uppermost ocean remained dominated by cold waters until ~ 6.5 ka. A reduced advection of cold polar waters through the East Greenland/East Icelandic Current thereafter entailed warmest and most saline Holocene conditions between 6.5 and 5 ka, in turn followed by a general cooling trend. By contrast, both planktic foraminifers and dinocysts show an increased presence of Atlantic (-type) waters from ~ 122 ka onward resulting in a MIS 5e thermal optimum around 120.5 ka. Nonetheless, occasional freshwater input from melting drift ice created stratified but also seasonally variable conditions during this first half of MIS 5e. This stratification signature disappeared at ~ 120 ka when a marked repositioning of the oceanographic fronts occurred. Slightly colder conditions are indicated by both phyto- and zooplankton from there on until the end of MIS 5e around ~ 117 ka. A late MIS 5e cooling at the Iceland Plateau is opposite to a late MIS 5e optimum observed in the eastern Nordic seas. This regional difference is likely explained by various feedback mechanisms following the major reorganisation of the oceanic fronts at ~ 120 ka. The Holocene and MIS 5e interglacial variability is not reflected in the (quasi-monospecific) coccolith assemblages and illustrates the low sensitivity of living coccolithophore communities to subtle temperature changes in the low-temperature regions of the Nordic seas. Overall, quite different surface water properties appear to have characterised both interglacial intervals, with a higher share of warm, Atlantic elements in the planktic communities during MIS 5e. This suggests a higher contribution of Atlantic waters in the southwestern Nordic seas probably due to a more northward expansion of the Irminger Current under weakened polar East Greenland/East Icelandic currents. Such a reduced influence of polar waters in the southwestern Nordic seas may thus explain other evidence for relatively warm conditions in MIS 5e all around southern Greenland.

Marine sediments from the Voring Plateau (Norwegian Sea) have been studied for their dinoflagellate cyst (dinocyst) and foraminiferal content in order to reconstruct sea-surface conditions in the eastern Norwegian Sea during Marine Isotope Stage (MIS) 5e. In combination with stable oxygen isotope and ice rafted detritus (IRD) data, the variations in foraminiferal and dinocyst assemblage composition reflect a stepwise transition from the final phase of deglaciation (Termination II) into typical interglacial conditions. This stepwise change is repeated subsequently during the cooling conditions of glacial inception towards MIS 5d. The interval studied is characterized by relatively high abundances of Bitectatodinium tepikiense, in comparison to present-day values in the area, indicating a larger seasonal temperature amplitude with enhanced surface water stratification during MIS 5e. The important occurrence of the warm-temperate dinocyst Spiniferites mirabilis s.l. concurrent with subpolar foraminifers Turborotalita quinqueloba, Globigerina bulloides, and Globigerinita glutinata reveals that most pronounced interglacial marine conditions prevailed in the area just prior to the transition towards MIS 5d. The late stratigraphic position of this phase in the interglacial is verified by comparison with dinocyst data from south of Iceland, manifesting its over-regional implication. Besides the good agreement in dinocyst and foraminiferal assemblage changes, the variations in and between both fossil assemblages also point to the existence of some significant surface water variability in the eastern Norwegian Sea during MIS 5e.

Sediments from the last interglacial, marine isotope stage 5e (MIS 5e), have been studied for their dinoflagellate cyst content in a core retrieved from the Voring Plateau, Norwegian Sea. Qualitative and quantitative analyses of the data, and comparison with the surface sample and published Holocene data from the core, reveal distinct differences in hydrological surface conditions between the late Holocene and MIS 5e. A higher number of co-dominant, subordinate species in the last interglacial samples suggests there was a more pronounced seasonality of the surface water at this time. This is supported by the significant presence of Bitectatodinium tepikiense, a species that was virtually absent from the area for most of the Holocene. The seasonality signal is further substantiated by transfer-function reconstructions, which also indicates a stronger stratification of the upper water column during MIS 5e. Moreover, the assemblage data clearly show that optimal, fully marine interglacial conditions prevailed only late in MIS 5e (between ca. 117.5 and 116.5 Kya), which is in contrast with the climatic optimum early in the Holocene. Stable oxygen isotope values from planktic foraminifera for this MIS 5e optimum are comparable with the average Holocene values, but are generally ca. 0.3‰ higher than those of the earlier part of the last interglacial (sensu stricto). These higher d18O values are likely to be the result of the enhanced and prolonged influence of Saalian deglacial meltwater, thus corroborating the existence of a quite differently structured sea surface, as suggested by the dinocyst data.

Nineteen samples taken in the Upper Ordovician Kirkley Bank Formation at the recent Greenscoe section yielded a rich and moderately to well preserved chitinozoan assemblage, in spite of a high Conodont Colour Alteration Index. Within the assemblage, the Baltoscandian Fungochitina spinifera Biozone could be recognized, indicating a strong faunal exchange between the Baltica palaeocontinent and the Avalonian palaeomicrocontinent during the Late Ordovician. This biozone allowed a strong correlation with new chitinozoan biozonations in the Cautley district and Cross Fell Inlier, resulting in a late Onnian to early Cautleyan age for the Kirkley Bank Formation at Greenscoe.

The Last Interglacial (Marine Isotopic Stage or MIS 5e) surface ocean heat flux from the Rockall Basin (NE Atlantic) towards the Arctic Ocean was reconstructed by analysing dinoflagellate cyst (dinocyst) assemblages in four sediment cores. Together with records of stable isotopes and ice-rafted detritus, the assemblage data reflect the northward retreat of ice(berg)-laden waters and the gradual development towards interglacial conditions at the transition from the Saalian deglaciation (Termination II) into MIS 5e. At the Rockall Basin, this onset of the Last Interglacial is soon followed by the appearance of the thermophilic dinocyst species Spiniferites mirabilis, with relative abundances higher than those observed at present in the area. North of the Iceland-Scotland Ridge, however, S. mirabilis only appears in significant numbers during late MIS 5e, between not, vert, similar118 and 116.5 ka. Hence, fully marine Last Interglacial conditions with most intense Atlantic surface water influence occurred during late MIS 5e in the Nordic seas, and consequently also farther north in the Arctic Ocean, and at times when northern hemisphere summer insolation was already significantly decreased. The stratigraphic position of this Late Interglacial optimum is supported by planktic foraminifers and contrasts with the timing of the early Holocene climatic optimum in this area. We interpret the delayed northward expansion of Atlantic waters towards the polar latitudes as a result of the Saalian ice sheet deglaciation and its specific impact on the subsequent water mass evolution in this region.

Absolute abundances (concentrations) of dinoflagellate cysts are often determined through the addition of Lycopodium clavatum marker-grains as a spike to a sample before palynological processing. An inter-laboratory calibration exercise was set up in order to test the comparability of results obtained in different laboratories, each using its own preparation method. Each of the 23 laboratories received the same amount of homogenized splits of four Quaternary sediment samples. The samples originate from different localities and consisted of a variety of lithologies. Dinoflagellate cysts were extracted and counted, and relative and absolute abundances were calculated. The relative abundances proved to be fairly reproducible, notwithstanding a need for taxonomic calibration. By contrast, excessive loss of Lycopodium spores during sample preparation resulted in non-reproducibility of absolute abundances. Use of oxidation, KOH, warm acids, acetolysis, mesh sizes larger than 15 µm and long ultrasonication (> 1 min) must be avoided to determine reproducible absolute abundances. The results of this work therefore indicate that the dinoflagellate cyst worker should make a choice between using the proposed standard method which circumvents critical steps, adding Lycopodium tablets at the end of the preparation and using an alternative method.

International audience; The physical, sedimentological, mineralogical and elemental geochemical properties of sediment cores AMD1803-02BC and 01PC from the Cape Norton Shaw Inlet were investigated to reconstruct glacial sediment discharges from southeastern Manson Icefield and document the impact of ice–ocean interactions on the sediment dynamics and opening of the North Water Polynya (NOW) in northwestern Baffin Bay since the last deglaciation. Laminated glaciomarine sediments rich in quartz and feldspar are observed prior to 11 cal. ka BP and were probably deposited by hyperpycnal currents triggered by the local retreat of the southern margin of the Innuitian Ice. Detrital proxies suggest that Early Holocene sediment dynamics were mainly influenced by sea ice and iceberg rafting and meltwater discharges related to the deglaciation of eastern Smith (~11 to 10.65 cal. ka BP) and Jones (~10.7 cal. ka BP) sounds. This also provides an upper limit to the timing of formation of the NOW. The high detrital carbonate contents during 8.8 to 6.6 cal. ka BP confirm that enhanced carbonate-rich sediment export from Nares Strait to northern Baffin Bay occurred during and after the deglaciation of Kennedy Channel (8.8 to 8.2 cal. ka BP). Canadian Shield sediment inputs have dominated since 6.6 cal. ka BP, indicating that sedimentation is mainly influenced by Cape Norton Shaw glacier discharges. The lower level of sedimentation recorded in core 01PC during the Middle to Late Holocene suggests an accelerated landward retreat of the Cape Norton Shaw glaciers in response to warmer marine conditions. During the Neoglacial period, higher sedimentation rates and detrital proxies in the cores suggest increased glacial erosional processes, probably associated with the long-term declines in boreal summer insolation and glacier growth. Finally, mineralogical and grain-size data in core 02BC support the idea that increased Arctic atmospheric temperatures have had an important influence on the glacial dynamics during the industrial period.
