We present optical photometry and spectroscopy of the superluminous SN 2002gh from maximum light to $+204$ days, obtained as part of the Carnegie Type II Supernova (CATS) project. SN 2002gh is among the most luminous discovered supernovae ever, yet it remained unnoticed for nearly two decades. Using Dark Energy Camera archival images we identify the potential SN host galaxy as a faint dwarf galaxy, presumably having low metallicity, and in an apparent merging process with other nearby dwarf galaxies. We show that SN 2002gh is among the brightest hydrogen-poor SLSNe with $M_{V} = -22.40 \pm 0.02$, with an estimated peak bolometric luminosity of $2.6 \pm 0.1 \times 10^{44}$ erg s$^{-1}$. We discount the decay of radioactive nickel as the main SN power mechanism, and assuming that the SN is powered by the spin down of a magnetar we obtain two alternative solutions. The first case, is characterized by significant magnetar power leakage, and $M_{\mathrm{ej}}$ between 0.6 and 3.2 $M_{\odot}$, $P_{\mathrm{spin}} = 3.2$ ms, and $B = 5 \times 10^{13}$ G. The second case does not require power leakage, resulting in a huge ejecta mass of about 30 $M_{\odot}$, a fast spin period of $P_{\mathrm{spin}} \sim 1$ ms, and $B\sim 1.6 \times 10^{14}$ G. We estimate a zero-age main-sequence mass between 14 and 25 $M_{\odot}$ for the first case and of about 135 $M_{\odot}$ for the second case. The latter case would place the SN progenitor among the most massive stars observed to explode as a SN., 25 pages, 18 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS

The Double Asteroid Redirection Test (DART) spacecraft successfully performed the first test of a kinetic impactor for asteroid deflection by impacting Dimorphos, the secondary of near-Earth binary asteroid (65803) Didymos, and changing the orbital period of Dimorphos. A change in orbital period of approximately 7 minutes was expected if the incident momentum from the DART spacecraft was directly transferred to the asteroid target in a perfectly inelastic collision, but studies of the probable impact conditions and asteroid properties indicated that a considerable momentum enhancement ($\beta$) was possible. In the years prior to impact, we used lightcurve observations to accurately determine the pre-impact orbit parameters of Dimorphos with respect to Didymos. Here we report the change in the orbital period of Dimorphos as a result of the DART kinetic impact to be -33.0 +/- 1.0 (3$\sigma$) minutes. Using new Earth-based lightcurve and radar observations, two independent approaches determined identical values for the change in the orbital period. This large orbit period change suggests that ejecta contributed a significant amount of momentum to the asteroid beyond what the DART spacecraft carried., Comment: Accepted by Nature

We present a comprehensive study of the massive binary system HM1~8, based on multi-epoch high resolution spectroscopy, $V$-band photometry and archival X-ray data. Spectra from the OWN Survey, a high resolution optical monitoring of Southern O and WN stars, are used to analyse the spectral morphology and perform quantitative spectroscopic analysis of both stellar components. The primary and secondary components are classified as O4.5~IV(f) and O9.7~V, respectively. From a radial-velocity (RV) study we derived a set of orbital parameters for the system. We found an eccentric orbit ($e=0.14 \pm 0.01$) with a period of $P = 5.87820 \pm 0.00008$~days. Through the simultaneous analysis of the RVs and the $V$-band light curve we derived an orbital inclination of $70.0^{\circ} \pm 2.0$ and stellar masses of $M_a=33.6^{+1.4}_{-1.2}~\text{M}_{\sun}$ for the primary, and $M_b=17.7^{+0.5}_{-0.7}~\text{M}_{\sun}$ for the secondary. The components show projected rotational velocities $v_1\sin{i}=105 \pm 14~\text{km~s}^{-1}$ and $v_2\sin{i}=82 \pm 15~\text{km~s}^{-1}$, respectively. A tidal evolution analysis is also performed and found to be in agreement with the orbital characteristics. Finally, the available X-ray observations show no evidence of a colliding winds region, therefore the X-ray emission is attributed to stellar winds., Comment: 15 pages, 15 figures, to be published in MNRAS

The amount of cosmic dust contributed by stellar sources in galaxies at all cosmic epochs remains a controversial topic, particularly whether or not supernovae (SNe) have an important role to play given the dust-hostile environments provided by SNe. To date, freshly-formed dust has been observed in a handful of core collapse (CC) SNe, both in the ejecta in-situ and in the interactions between the ejecta and circumstellar medium (CSM). As yet, there exists no clear observational evidence for dust formation in Type Ia SNe despite predictions of $3×10^{-4}$- $0.2$ Msun of dust forming per Ia. Here we report evidence of dust formation in the ejecta-CSM interaction in the Type Ia (SNIa) SN2018evt just three years after the explosion, characterized by a staggering rise in the mid-infrared (MIR) flux accompanied by an accelerated decline in the optical. This hypothesis is strengthened by the concurrent evolution of the profiles of the Hα emission lines. A preexisting hydrogen-rich torus which itself may be dusty before the SN explosion, provides a natural explanation of the observed data. SN 2018evt is the first SNIa with clear evidence of both dust destruction and formation in its ejecta and surroundings. The amount of the newly formed dust follows a steep power law rise of index 4 with time after the explosion. This steep rise indicates that the newly formed dust is formed in the SN ejecta, which is compressed by the shock interaction with the CSM.

We present the final results of an imaging and spectroscopic search for stars in the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) with C II 7231, 7236 emission lines. The goal is to identify and study [WC11] stars, the coolest of the low-mass Wolf-Rayet sequence, and a subset of central stars of planetary nebulae where the C II lines are known to be especially prominent. A recent serendipitous discovery of an LMC [WC11] raised the possibility that these objects, although difficult to identify, might in fact be more common than previously believed. Several new members of this rare class have been found in this survey. It now seems clear, however, that a significant number of these stars are not hiding amongst the general [WC] population. We point out that the C II doublet intensity ratio observed in our spectra proves to neatly divide the objects into two distinct groups, with the C II emission likely originating from either the stellar wind or a surrounding nebula. The physics of the C II emission mechanism correctly explains this bifurcation. Spectral subtypes are suggested for most of the objects. We present JWST near- and mid-infrared spectroscopic observations of the nearby normal Type Ia supernova SN 2021aefx in the nebular phase at $+255$ days past maximum light. Our Near Infrared Spectrograph (NIRSpec) and Mid Infrared Instrument (MIRI) observations, combined with ground-based optical data from the South African Large Telescope (SALT), constitute the first complete optical $+$ NIR $+$ MIR nebular SN Ia spectrum covering 0.3$-$14 $\mu$m. This spectrum unveils the previously unobserved 2.5$-$5 $\mu$m region, revealing strong nebular iron and stable nickel emission, indicative of high-density burning that can constrain the progenitor mass. The data show a significant improvement in sensitivity and resolution compared to previous Spitzer MIR data. We identify numerous NIR and MIR nebular emission lines from iron-group elements and as well as lines from the intermediate-mass element argon. The argon lines extend to higher velocities than the iron-group elements, suggesting stratified ejecta that are a hallmark of delayed-detonation or double-detonation SN Ia models. We present fits to simple geometric line profiles to features beyond 1.2 $\mu$m and find that most lines are consistent with Gaussian or spherical emission distributions, while the [Ar III] 8.99 $\mu$m line has a distinctively flat-topped profile indicating a thick spherical shell of emission. Using our line profile fits, we investigate the emissivity structure of SN 2021aefx and measure kinematic properties. Continued observations of SN 2021aefx and other SNe Ia with JWST will be transformative to the study of SN Ia composition, ionization structure, density, and temperature, and will provide important constraints on SN Ia progenitor and explosion models., Comment: published in ApJ Letters, 17 pages, 12 figures

Ni, Y. Q., et al., Type Ia supernovae are thermonuclear explosions of white dwarf stars. They play a central role in the chemical evolution of the Universe and are an important measure of cosmological distances. However, outstanding questions remain about their origins. Despite extensive efforts to obtain natal information from their earliest signals, observations have thus far failed to identify how the majority of them explode. Here, we present infant-phase detections of SN 2018aoz from a very low brightness of −10.5 AB absolute magnitude, revealing a hitherto unseen plateau in the B band that results in a rapid redward colour evolution between 1.0 and 12.4 hours after the estimated epoch of first light. The missing B-band flux is best explained by line-blanket absorption from Fe-peak elements in the outer 1% of the ejected mass. The observed B − V colour evolution of the supernova also matches the prediction from an over-density of Fe-peak elements in the same outer 1% of the ejected mass, whereas bluer colours are expected from a purely monotonic distribution of Fe-peak elements. We present the largest and most homogeneous collection of near-infrared (NIR) spectra of Type Ia supernovae (SNe Ia): 339 spectra of 98 individual SNe obtained as part of the Carnegie Supernova Project-II. These spectra, obtained with the FIRE spectrograph on the 6.5 m Magellan Baade telescope, have a spectral range of 0.8--2.5 $\mu$m. Using this sample, we explore the NIR spectral diversity of SNe Ia and construct a template of spectral time series as a function of the light-curve-shape parameter, color stretch $s_{BV}$. Principal component analysis is applied to characterize the diversity of the spectral features and reduce data dimensionality to a smaller subspace. Gaussian process regression is then used to model the subspace dependence on phase and light-curve shape and the associated uncertainty. Our template is able to predict spectral variations that are correlated with $s_{BV}$, such as the hallmark NIR features: Mg II at early times and the $H$-band break after peak. Using this template reduces the systematic uncertainties in K-corrections by ~90% compared to those from the Hsiao template. These uncertainties, defined as the mean K-correction differences computed with the color-matched template and observed spectra, are on the level of $4\times10^{-4}$ mag on average. This template can serve as the baseline spectral energy distribution for light-curve fitters and can identify peculiar spectral features that might point to compelling physics. We place statistical constraints on Type Ia supernova (SN Ia) progenitors using 227 nebular phase spectra of 111 SNe Ia. We find no evidence of stripped companion emission in any of the nebular phase spectra. Upper limits are placed on the amount of mass that could go undetected in each spectrum using recent hydrodynamic simulations. With these null detections, we place an observational $3\sigma$ upper limit on the fraction of SNe Ia that are produced through the classical H-rich non-degenerate companion scenario of < 5.5%. Additionally, we set a tentative $3\sigma$ upper limit on He star progenitor scenarios of < 6.4%, although further theoretical modelling is required. These limits refer to our most representative sample including normal, 91bg-like, 91T-like, and "Super Chandrasekhar" \sne but excluding SNe Iax and SNe Ia-CSM. As part of our analysis, we also derive a Nebular Phase Phillips Relation, which approximates the brightness of a SN Ia from $150-500$~days after maximum using the peak magnitude and decline rate parameter $\Delta m_{15} (B)$., Comment: 18 pages, 8 figures, and 3 tables in main text, plus 3 pages of appendices with 1 figure and 7 tables. As part of the 100IAS survey, a program aimed to obtain nebular-phase spectra for a volume-limited and homogeneous sample of Type Ia supernovae (SNe Ia), we observed ASASSN-18tb (SN 2018fhw) at 139 days past maximum light. ASASSN-18tb was a fast-declining, sub-luminous event that fits well within the observed photometric and spectroscopic distributions of the SN Ia population. We detect a prominent H$\alpha$ emission line of $L_{{\rm H}\alpha}=2.2\pm0.2\times10^{38}$ ergs s$^{-1}$ with FWHM $\approx1100$ km s$^{-1}$ in the nebular-phase spectrum of this SN Ia. High luminosity H$\alpha$ emission ($L_{{\rm H}\alpha}\gtrsim 10^{40}$ ergs~s$^{-1}$) has previously been discovered in a rare class of SNe Ia-like objects showing CSM interactions (SNe Ia-CSM). They predominantly belong to over-luminous ($M_{\rm max}, Comment: Submitted to MNRAS

An analysis of the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) WC4 star BAT99-9 (HD 32125, FD 4, Brey 7, WS 3) shows that the star still contains photospheric nitrogen. Three N emission features (N V $\lambda\lambda 1238,1242$, N IV $\lambda 1719$, N IV $\lambda\lambda 3479 - 3485$) are unambiguously identified in the spectrum. CMFGEN models of the star yield a N/C ratio of $0.004 \pm 0.002$ (by number) and a C/He ratio of $0.15_{-0.05}^{+0.10}$. Due to the similarity of BAT99-9 to other WC4 stars, and the good fit achieved by CMFGEN to both the classic WC4 spectrum, and the N lines, we argue that the N lines are intrinsic to BAT99-9. An examination of a limited set of rotating models for single star evolution at LMC and Galactic metallicities shows that a model with a Galactic metallicity ($z=0.014$) and a progenitor mass of around $50\,M_\odot$ can have a N/C ratio similar to, or larger than, what we observe for a significant fraction of its lifetime. However, the LMC models ($z=0.006$) are inconsistent with the observations. Both the single and binary BPASS models predict that many WC stars can have a N/C ratio similar to, or larger than, what we observe for a significant fraction of their lifetime. While the binary models cover a wider range of luminosities and provide a somewhat better match to BAT99-9, it is not currently possible to rule out BAT99-9 being formed through single star evolution, given the uncertainties in mass-loss rates, and the treatment of convection and mixing processes., Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS

Lu, J., et al., We present photometric and spectroscopic observations of the 03fg-like Type Ia supernova (SN Ia) ASASSN-15hy from the ultraviolet (UV) to the near-infrared (NIR). ASASSN-15hy shares many of the hallmark characteristics of 03fg-like SNe Ia, previously referred to as "super-Chandrasekhar"SNe Ia. It is bright in the UV and NIR, lacks a clear i-band secondary maximum, shows a strong and persistent C ii feature, and has a low Si ii λ6355 velocity. However, some of its properties are also extreme among the subgroup. ASASSN-15hy is underluminous (M B,peak = 19.14-0.16+0.11 mag), red ((B-V) {B\max }=0.18-0.03+0.01 mag), yet slowly declining (Δm 15(B) = 0.72 ± 0.04 mag). It has the most delayed onset of the i-band maximum of any 03fg-like SN. ASASSN-15hy lacks the prominent H-band break emission feature that is typically present during the first month past maximum in normal SNe Ia. Such events may be a potential problem for high-redshift SN Ia cosmology. ASASSN-15hy may be explained in the context of an explosion of a degenerate core inside a nondegenerate envelope. The explosion impacting the nondegenerate envelope with a large mass provides additional luminosity and low ejecta velocities. An initial deflagration burning phase is critical in reproducing the low 56Ni mass and luminosity, while the large core mass is essential in providing the large diffusion timescales required to produce the broad light curves. The model consists of a rapidly rotating 1.47 M o˙ degenerate core and a 0.8 M o˙ nondegenerate envelope. Davis, S., et al., We present a study of the optical and near-infrared (NIR) spectra of SN 2013ai along with its light curves. These data range from discovery until 380 days after explosion. SN 2013ai is a fast declining Type II supernova (SN II) with an unusually long rise time, 18.9 2.7 days in the V-band, and a bright V-band peak absolute magnitude of -18.7 0.06 mag. The spectra are dominated by hydrogen features in the optical and NIR. The spectral features of SN 2013ai are unique in their expansion velocities, which, when compared to large samples of SNe II, are more than 1,000 km s-1 faster at 50 days past explosion. In addition, the long rise time of the light curve more closely resembles SNe IIb rather than SNe II. If SN 2013ai is coeval with a nearby compact cluster, we infer a progenitor zero-age main-sequence mass of ∼17 M o˙. After performing light-curve modeling, we find that SN 2013ai could be the result of the explosion of a star with little hydrogen mass, a large amount of synthesized 56Ni, 0.3-0.4 M o˙, and an explosion energy of 2.5-3.0 1051 erg. The density structure and expansion velocities of SN 2013ai are similar to those of the prototypical SN IIb, SN 1993J. However, SN 2013ai shows no strong helium features in the optical, likely due to the presence of a dense core that prevents the majority of γ-rays from escaping to excite helium. Narrow-line Seyfert 1 (NLS1) galaxies are a class of active galactic nuclei (AGN) that, in some cases, can harbor powerful relativistic jets. One of them, PKS 2004-447, shows gamma-ray emission, and underwent its first recorded multifrequency flare in 2019. However, past studies revealed that in radio this source can be classified as a compact steep-spectrum source (CSS), suggesting that, unlike other gamma-ray sources, the relativistic jets of PKS 2004-447 have a large inclination with respect to the line of sight. We present here a set of spectroscopic observations of this object, aimed at carefully measuring its black hole mass and Eddington ratio, determining the properties of its emission lines, and characterizing its long term variability. We find that the black hole mass is $(1.5\pm0.2)\times10^7$ M$_\odot$, and the Eddington ratio is 0.08. Both values are within the typical range of NLS1s. The spectra also suggest that the 2019 flare was caused mainly by the relativistic jet, while the accretion disk played a minor role during the event. In conclusion, we confirm that PKS 2004-447 is one of the rare examples of gamma-ray emitting CSS/NLS1s hybrid, and that these two classes of objects are likely connected in the framework of AGN evolution., Comment: 14 pages, 8 figures, 4 tables, resubmitted to A&A after minor comments from the referee

The present study is the first of a series of three papers where we characterise the type II supernovae (SNe~II) from the Carnegie Supernova Project-I to understand their diversity in terms of progenitor and explosion properties. In this first paper, we present bolometric light curves of 74 SNe~II. We outline our methodology to calculate the bolometric luminosity, which consists of the integration of the observed fluxes in numerous photometric bands ($uBgVriYJH$) and black-body (BB) extrapolations to account for the unobserved flux at shorter and longer wavelengths. BB fits were performed using all available broadband data except when line blanketing effects appeared. Photometric bands bluer than $r$ that are affected by line blanketing were removed from the fit, which makes near-infrared (NIR) observations highly important to estimate reliable BB extrapolations to the infrared. BB fits without NIR data produce notably different bolometric light curves, and therefore different estimates of SN~II progenitor and explosion properties when data are modelled. We present two methods to address the absence of NIR observations: (a) colour-colour relationships from which NIR magnitudes can be estimated using optical colours, and (b) new prescriptions for bolometric corrections as a function of observed SN~II colours. Using our 74 SN~II bolometric light curves, we provide a full characterisation of their properties based on several observed parameters. We measured magnitudes at different epochs, as well as durations and decline rates of different phases of the evolution. An analysis of the light-curve parameter distributions was performed, finding a wide range and a continuous sequence of observed parameters which is consistent with previous analyses using optical light curves., Comment: Accepted for publication in A&A

We use the spectroscopy and homogeneous photometry of 97 Type Ia supernovae obtained by the \emph{Carnegie Supernova Project} as well as a subset of 36 Type Ia supernovae presented by Zheng et al. (2018) to examine maximum-light correlations in a four-dimensional (4-D) parameter space: $B$-band absolute magnitude, $M_B$, \ion{Si}{2}~$\lambda6355$ velocity, \vsi, and \ion{Si}{2} pseudo-equivalent widths pEW(\ion{Si}{2}~$\lambda6355$) and pEW(\ion{Si}{2}~$\lambda5972$). It is shown using Gaussian mixture models (GMMs) that the original four groups in the Branch diagram are well-defined and robust in this parameterization. We find three continuous groups that describe the behavior of our sample in [$M_B$, \vsi] space. Extending the GMM into the full 4-D space yields a grouping system that only slightly alters group definitions in the [$M_B$, \vsi] projection, showing that most of the clustering information in [$M_B$, \vsi] is already contained in the 2-D GMM groupings. However, the full 4-D space does divide group membership for faster objects between core-normal and broad-line objects in the Branch diagram. A significant correlation between $M_B$ and pEW(\ion{Si}{2}~$\lambda5972$) is found, which implies that Branch group membership can be well-constrained by spectroscopic quantities alone. In general, we find that higher-dimensional GMMs reduce the uncertainty of group membership for objects between the originally defined Branch groups. We also find that the broad-line Branch group becomes nearly distinct with the inclusion of \vsi, indicating that this subclass of SNe Ia may be somehow different from the other groups., 26 pages, 19 figures, ApJ, in press

We present optical and near-infrared photometry and spectroscopy of the Type IIn supernova (SN) 2014ab, obtained by the Carnegie Supernova Project II (CSP-II) and initiated immediately after its optical discovery. We also present mid-infrared photometry obtained by the Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer (WISE) satellite extending from 56 days prior to the optical discovery to over 1600 days. The light curve of SN 2014ab evolves slowly, while the spectra exhibit strong emission features produced from the interaction between rapidly expanding ejecta and dense circumstellar matter. The light curve and spectral properties are very similar to those of SN 2010jl. The estimated mass-loss rate of the progenitor of SN 2014ab is of the order of 0.1 Msun/yr under the assumption of spherically symmetric circumstellar matter and steady mass loss. Although the mid-infrared luminosity increases due to emission from dust, which is characterized by a blackbody temperature close to the dust evaporation temperature (~ 2000 K), no clear signatures of in situ dust formation within the cold dense shell located behind the forward shock are observed in SN 2014ab in early phases. Mid-infrared emission of SN 2014ab may originate from pre-existing dust located within dense circumstellar matter that is heated by the SN shock or shock-driven radiation. We present multiwavelength observations of two gap transients that were followed by the Carnegie Supernova Project-II. The observations are supplemented with data obtained by a number of different programs. Here in the first of two papers, we focus on the intermediate-luminosity red transient (ILRT) designated SNhunt120, while in a companion paper we examine the luminous red novae AT 2014ej. Our data set for SNhunt120 consists of an early optical discovery, estimated to be within three days after outburst, the subsequent optical and near-infrared broadband followup extending over a period of about two months, two visual and two near-infrared wavelength spectra, and Spitzer Space Telescope observations extending from early (+28 d) to late (+1155 d) phases. SNhunt120 resembles other ILRTs such as NGC 300-2008-OT and SN 2008S, and like these other ILRTs, SNhunt120 exhibits prevalent midinfrared emission at both early and late phases. From the comparison of SNhunt120 and other ILRTs to electron-capture supernova simulations, we find that the current models underestimate the explosion kinetic energy and thereby produce synthetic light curves that overestimate the luminosity. We present photometric and spectroscopic observations of SN 2013aa and SN 2017cbv, two nearly identical type Ia supernovae (SNe Ia) in the host galaxy NGC 5643. The optical photometry has been obtained using the same telescope and instruments used by the Carnegie Supernova Project. This eliminates most instrumental systematics and provides light curves in a stable and well-understood photometric system. Having the same host galaxy also eliminates systematics due to distance and peculiar velocity, providing an opportunity to directly test the relative precision of SNe Ia as standard candles. The two SNe have nearly identical decline rates, negligible reddening, and remarkably similar spectra and, at a distance of $\sim 20$ Mpc, are ideal as potential calibrators for the absolute distance using primary indicators such as Cepheid variables. We discuss to what extent these two SNe can be considered twins and compare them with other supernova "siblings" in the literature and their likely progenitor scenarios. Using 12 galaxies that hosted 2 or more SNe~Ia, we find that when using SNe~Ia, and after accounting for all sources of observational error, one gets consistency in distance to 3 percent., Accepted for publication in the Astrophysical Journal

HD 54662 AB is one of the three O + OB binaries known so far with orbital period longer than 1000 d, offering the opportunity to test scenarios of massive star formation and models of single stellar evolution. Here, we present a detailed study of this system based on new high-resolution spectra and data. A disentangling method is used to recover the individual spectra of the primary and secondary components, which are classified as O6.5 V(n)z and O7.5 Vz, respectively. Combining radial velocity measurements and astrometric data, a new absolute orbit with a period of 2113 ± 9 d and an eccentricity of 0.062 ± 0.008 is determined, confirming previous findings. However, absolute masses of 23.8 ± 1.1 M¿ for the primary and 20.3 ± 1.1 M¿ for the secondary are obtained, differing from previous determinations but in reasonable agreement with the spectral types of the stars. Primary and secondary components show remarkably different projected rotational velocities (160 and ¿40 $\rm km\, s^{-1}$, respectively), which is probably related to the formation process of the binary. Contrary to previously interpretations, the star with broader spectral features is the most massive object in the system. Stellar and wind parameters of both stars are derived through quantitative spectroscopic analysis of the disentangled spectra using fastwind models, and they are consistent with the current calibrations for O-type stars. Evolutionary masses and ages are also computed with the bonnsai tool. We present optical and near-infrared broadband photometry and optical spectra of AT 2014ej from the Carnegie Supernova ProjectII. These observations are complemented with data from the CHilean Automatic Supernova sEarch, the Public ESO Spectroscopic Survey of Transient Objects, and from the Backyard Observatory Supernova Search. Observational signatures of AT 2014ej reveal that it is similar to other members of the gap-transient subclass known as luminous red novae (LRNe), including the ubiquitous doublehump light curve and spectral properties similar to that of LRN SN 2017jfs. A medium-dispersion visual-wavelength spectrum of AT 2014ej taken with the Magellan Clay telescope exhibits a P Cygni Hα feature characterized by a blue velocity at zero intensity of ≈110 km s−1 and a P Cygni minimum velocity of ≈70 km s−1 . We attribute this to emission from a circumstellar wind. Inspection of pre-outbust Hubble Space Telescope images yields no conclusive progenitor detection. In comparison with a sample of LRNe from the literature, AT 2014ej lies at the brighter end of the luminosity distribution. Comparison of the ultra-violet, optical, infrared light curves of well-observed LRNe to common-envelope evolution models from the literature indicates that the models underpredict the luminosity of the comparison sample at all phases and also produce inconsistent timescales of the secondary peak. This paper describes the rapidly evolving and unusual supernova LSQ13ddu, discovered by the La Silla-QUEST survey. LSQ13ddu displayed a rapid rise of just 4.8$\pm$0.9 d to reach a peak brightness of $-$19.70$\pm$0.02 mag in the $\mathit{LSQgr}$ band. Early spectra of LSQ13ddu showed the presence of weak and narrow He I features arising from interaction with circumstellar material (CSM). These interaction signatures weakened quickly, with broad features consistent with those seen in stripped-envelope SNe becoming dominant around two weeks after maximum. The narrow He I velocities are consistent with the wind velocities of luminous blue variables but its spectra lack the typically seen hydrogen features. The fast and bright early light curve is inconsistent with radioactive $^{56}$Ni powering but can be explained through a combination of CSM interaction and an underlying $^{56}$Ni decay component that dominates the later time behaviour of LSQ13ddu. We present DES16C3cje, a low-luminosity, long-lived type II supernova (SN II) at redshift 0.0618, detected by the Dark Energy Survey (DES). DES16C3cje is a unique SN. The spectra are characterized by extremely narrow photospheric lines corresponding to very low expansion velocities of . 1500 km s−1 , and the light curve shows an initial peak that fades after 50 days before slowly rebrightening over a further 100 days to reach an absolute brightness of M푟 ∼ −15.5 mag. The decline rate of the late-time light curve is then slower than that expected from the powering by radioactive decay of 56Co, but is comparable to that expected from accretion power. Comparing the bolometric light curve with hydrodynamical models, we find that DES16C3cje can be explained by either i) a low explosion energy (0.11 foe) and relatively large 56Ni production of 0.075 M from a ∼ 15 M red supergiant progenitor typical of other SNe II, or ii) a relatively compact ∼ 40 M star, explosion energy of 1 foe, and 0.08 M of 56Ni. We present a narrow-band imaging survey of the Large Magellanic Cloud, designed to isolate the C II $\lambda\lambda$7231, 7236 emission lines in objects as faint as $m_{\lambda7400}\sim18$. The work is motivated by the recent serendipitous discovery in the LMC of the first confirmed extragalactic [WC11] star, whose spectrum is dominated by C II emission, and the realization that the number of such objects is currently largely unconstrained. The survey, which imaged $\sim$50$~$deg$^2$ using on-band and off-band filters, will significantly increase the total census of these rare stars. In addition, each new LMC [WC] star has a known luminosity, a quantity quite uncertain in the Galactic sample. Multiple known C II emitters were easily recovered, validating the survey design. We find 38 new C II emission candidates; spectroscopy of the complete sample will be needed to ascertain their nature. In a preliminary spectroscopic reconnaissance, we observed three candidates, finding C II emission in each. One is a new [WC11]. Another shows both the narrow C II emission lines characteristic of a [WC11], but also broad emission of C IV, O V, and He II characteristic of a much hotter [WC4] star; we speculate that this is a binary [WC]. The third object shows weak C II emission, but the spectrum is dominated by a dense thicket of strong absorption lines, including numerous O II transitions. We conclude it is likely an unusual hot, hydrogen-poor post-AGB star, possibly in transition from [WC] to white dwarf. Even lacking a complete spectroscopic program, we can infer that late [WC] stars do not dominate the central stars of LMC planetary nebulae, and that the detected C II emitters are largely of an old population., Comment: Accepted for publication in the Astrophysical Journal, 2020

We present nearly 500 days of observations of the tidal disruption event ASASSN-18pg, spanning from 54 days before peak light to 441 days after peak light. Our dataset includes X-ray, UV, and optical photometry, optical spectroscopy, radio observations, and the first published spectropolarimetric observations of a TDE. ASASSN-18pg was discovered on 2018 July 11 by the All-Sky Automated Survey for Supernovae (ASAS-SN) at a distance of $d=78.6$ Mpc, and with a peak UV magnitude of $m\simeq14$ it is both one of the nearest and brightest TDEs discovered to-date. The photometric data allow us to track both the rise to peak and the long-term evolution of the TDE. ASASSN-18pg peaked at a luminosity of $L\simeq2.2\times10^{44}$ erg s$^{-1}$, and its late-time evolution is shallower than a flux $\propto t^{-5/3}$ power-law model, similar to what has been seen in other TDEs. ASASSN-18pg exhibited Balmer lines and spectroscopic features consistent with Bowen fluorescence prior to peak which remained detectable for roughly 225 days after peak. Analysis of the two-component H$\alpha$ profile indicates that, if they are the result of reprocessing of emission from the accretion disk, the different spectroscopic lines may be coming from regions between $\sim10$ and $\sim60$ light-days from the black hole. No X-ray emission is detected from the TDE and there is no evidence of a jet or strong outflow detected in the radio. Our spectropolarimetric observations give no strong evidence for significant asphericity in the emission region, with the emission region having an axis ratio of at least $\sim0.65$., Comment: 22 pages, 11 figures, 5 tables. Identifications of a large fraction of previously unidentified lines in the complex spectrum of the low mass, late-type LMC [WC11] star J060819.93-715737.4 have been made utilizing electronic databases. There are an exceptionally large number of C II emission lines originating from autoionizing (ai) levels. Resonance fluorescence between the C II ground state and excited ai levels is shown to be a important photoabsorption process that is competitive with dielectronic recombination in exciting ai emission lines in stellar winds, and has broad application to many types of emission-line stars. In addition, numerous C II quartet multiplets appear in emission that are not excited directly by recombination or resonance fluorescence, signifying high wind densities in the emission region that enhance collisional transfer between doublet and quartet states., Comment: 17 pages, 1 figure, 1 table. Supernova (SN) 2017cbv in NGC 5643 is one of a handful of type Ia supernovae (SNe~Ia) reported to have excess blue emission at early times. This paper presents extensive $BVRIYJHK_s$-band light curves of SN 2017cbv, covering the phase from $-16$ to $+125$ days relative to $B$-band maximum light. SN 2017cbv reached a $B$-band maximum of 11.710$\pm$0.006~mag, with a post-maximum magnitude decline $\Delta m_{15}(B)$=0.990$\pm$0.013 mag. The supernova suffered no host reddening based on Phillips intrinsic color, Lira-Phillips relation, and the CMAGIC diagram. By employing the CMAGIC distance modulus $\mu=30.58\pm0.05$~mag and assuming $H_0$=72~$\rm km \ s^{-1} \ Mpc^{-1}$, we found that 0.73~\msun $^{56}$Ni was synthesized during the explosion of SN 2017cbv, which is consistent with estimates using reddening-free and distance-free methods via the phases of the secondary maximum of the NIR-band light curves. We also present 14 near-infrared spectra from $-18$ to $+49$~days relative to the $B$-band maximum light, providing constraints on the amount of swept-up hydrogen from the companion star in the context of the single degenerate progenitor scenario. No $Pa{\beta}$ emission feature was detected from our post-maximum NIR spectra, placing a hydrogen mass upper limit of 0.1 $M_{\odot}$. The overall optical/NIR photometric and NIR spectral evolution of SN 2017cbv is similar to that of a normal SN~Ia, even though its early evolution is marked by a flux excess no seen in most other well-observed normal SNe~Ia. We also compare the exquisite light curves of SN 2017cbv with some $M_{ch}$ DDT models and sub-$M_{ch}$ double detonation models.

We present a comprehensive review of all observations of the eclipsing recurrent Nova LMC 1968 in the Large Magellanic Cloud which was previously observed in eruption in 1968, 1990, 2002, 2010, and most recently in 2016. We derive a probable recurrence time of 6.2 ± 1.2 yr and provide the ephemerides of the eclipse. In the ultraviolet-optical-IR photometry the light curve shows high variability right from the first observation around 2 d after eruption. Therefore no colour changes can be substantiated. Outburst spectra from 2016 and 1990 are very similar and are dominated by H and He lines longward of 2000 Å. Interstellar reddening is found to be E(B − V) = 0.07 ± 0.01. The super soft X-ray luminosity is lower than the Eddington luminosity and the X-ray spectra suggest the mass of the white dwarf (WD) is larger than 1.3 M☉. Eclipses in the light curve suggest that the system is at high orbital inclination. On day 4 after the eruption a recombination wave was observed in Fe II ultraviolet absorption lines. Narrow-line components are seen after day 6 and explained as being due to reionization of ejecta from a previous eruption. The UV spectrum varies with orbital phase, in particular a component of the He II 1640 Å emission line, which leads us to propose that early-on the inner WD Roche lobe might be filled with a bound opaque medium prior to the re-formation of an accretion disc. We use photometric and spectroscopic observations of the eclipsing binary E32 in the globular cluster 47 Tuc to derive the masses, radii, and luminosities of the component stars. The system has an orbital period of 40.9 d, a markedly eccentric orbit with e = 0.24, and is shown to be a member of or a recent escaper from the cluster. We obtain Mp = 0.862 ± 0.005 M, Rp = 1.183 ± 0.003 R, Lp = 1.65 ± 0.05 L for the primary and Ms = 0.827 ± 0.005 M, Rs = 1.004 ± 0.004 R, Ls = 1.14 ± 0.04 L for the secondary. Based on these data and on an earlier analysis of the binary V69 in 47 Tuc, we measure the distance to the cluster from the distance moduli of the component stars, and, independently, from a colour – surface brightness calibration. We obtain 4.55 ± 0.03 and 4.50 ± 0.07 kpc, respectively – values compatible within 1 σ with recent estimates based on Gaia DR2 parallaxes. By comparing the M–R diagram of the two binaries and the colour–magnitude diagram of 47 Tuc to Dartmouth model isochrones we estimate the age of the cluster to be 12.0 ± 0.5 Gyr, and the helium abundance of the cluster to be Y ≈ 0.25., Erratum published in volume 494, issue 1, pages 846-9, May 2020.
