9. An Ultralow-Power 65-nm Standard Cell Library for Near/Subthreshold Digital Circuits.

Abstract

In this brief, a standard cell library targeting ultra-low voltages (ULVs) is designed in a 65-nm low-power CMOS technology to enable digital integrated circuits (ICs) to achieve good tradeoff among speed, power consumption, area, and reliability in the near/subthreshold region. The transistor sizes in the standard cells are optimized by threshold voltage tuning and technology feature exploration to enhance the switching and area efficiency of transistors. To balance the pull-up and pull-down networks, a Monte Carlo (MC) simulation-based balancing method is proposed. An AES-128 test circuit is fabricated by using the proposed library, achieving a minimum voltage of 0.338 V. Compared to the state of the art, our test circuit reduces the minimum energy delay product (EDP) by at least $3.55\times $. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

ATP-dependent chromatin remodeling complexes regulate chromatin structure and play important roles in gene expression, differentiation, development and cancer progression. Dysregulation in the subunits of the complexes often has been found in different cancers, but how they influence cancer initiation and progression is not fully understood. Here, we show that Chromatin Accessibility Complex Subunit 1 (CHRAC1), the accessory subunit of chromatin remodeling complex, is highly expressed in lung cancer tissues, which correlates with poor prognosis in lung cancer patients. CHRAC1 overexpression promotes lung cancer cell proliferation and migration in vitro and tumor growth in genetically engineered Kras G12D.LSL lung adenocarcinoma mouse model. Consistent with this, CHRAC1 silencing inhibits cell proliferation and migration in lung cancer cells and suppresses tumor growth in xenograft mouse model. Further, CHRAC1 binds to the transcription coactivator Yes-associated protein (YAP), enhances the transcription of downstream target oncogenes in Hippo pathway and thus promotes the tumor growth. Together, our study defines a critical role of CHRAC1 in promoting YAP transcriptional activity and lung cancer tumorigenesis, which makes it a potential target for lung cancer. 11. Re-examining the causes of corporate securities fraud

Abstract

The stock market provides investors with opportunities for wealth creation, but also allows corporations and brokers to commit securities fraud. To date, criminologists have paid little attention to corporate securities fraud and this dissertation is designed to shed light on the problem from a criminological perspective. It compares the extent to which the rational choice perspective and corporate structure theory can help explain corporate crime.Using a case-control design, this research compares two groups of companies, litigated and non-litigated by the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC). The comparison was made in terms of size, financial performance, top management, and board structure, while controlling for industry and geographic location. The case group consists of 188 companies litigated by the SEC for securities fraud between 1999 and 2003. Another 188 companies which never have been litigated by the SEC served as the control group. The data were drawn from the COMPUSTAT North America database and the companies’ annual reports and proxy statements which are available from the SEC website.A Chi-Square analysis was used to analyze the relationship between firm size (independent variable) and litigation status (dependent variable), which was found to be statistically significant. Given that firm size might well affect the relationship between litigation status and other independent variables, a second group of control companies was selected while controlling for one more variable, firm size. Logistic regression was conducted to compare proposed causal variables and predict litigation status between litigated group and non-litigated group. The results found that small companies are more likely to be litigated. In addition, while average age of top management and financial performance are not significantly related to litigation status, length of service for top management and board structure are strongly associated with a company’s litigation status. These results provided support for the rational choice theory-related hypotheses. In particular, although firm size is significantly related to litigation status, the direction of the relationship is not consistent with the hypothesis based on the corporate structure theory.

Abstract

Since Sutherland coined the term "white-collar crime," there have been many criminological theories developed to explain corporate crime, which has been generally considered a subtype of white-collar crime, such as anomie theory, social learning theory, organization theory, control theory, and rational choice theory. Among these theories, social learning theory and rational choice theory have been recognized as the most applicable theoretical frameworks given their special concerns on risk-reward analysis and the decision making process, its associations with economic and sociological perspectives, and the nature of the corporation as a social entity. Accordingly, this paper aims to analyze the strengths of these two theories in explaining corporate crime.The first section describes the characteristics of corporate crimes. The second section reviews the elements of rational choice theory and social learning theory. In the third section, the paper reviews the literatures of rational choice theory and social learning theory in the context of corporate crime. In the fourth section, the paper compares the strengths of these two theories.
