Quantum many-body scars are energy eigenstates which fail to reproduce thermal expectation values of local observables in systems, where the rest of the many-body spectrum fulfils eigenstate thermalization. Experimental observation of quantum many-body scars has so far been limited to models with multiple scar states. Here we propose protocols to observe single scars in architectures of fixed-frequency, fixed-coupling superconducting qubits. We first adapt known models possessing the desired features into a form particularly suited for the experimental platform. We develop protocols for the implementation of these models, through trotterized sequences of two-qubit cross-resonance interactions, and verify the existence of the approximate scar state in the stroboscopic effective Hamiltonian. Since a single scar cannot be detected from coherent revivals in the dynamics, differently from towers of scar states, we propose and numerically investigate alternative and experimentally-accessible signatures. We propose a type of phase transition in quantum many-body systems, which occurs in highly excited quantum many-body scar states, while most of the spectrum is largely unaffected. Such scar state phase transitions can be realized by embedding a matrix product state, known to undergo a phase transition, as a scar state into the thermal spectrum of a parent Hamiltonian. The eigenstate thermalization hypothesis describes how isolated many-body quantum systems reach thermal equilibrium. However, quantum many-body scars and Hilbert space fragmentation violate this hypothesis and cause nonthermal behavior. We demonstrate that Hilbert space fragmentation may arise from lattice geometry in a spin-1/2 model that conserves the number of domain walls. We generalize a known, one-dimensional, scarred model to larger dimensions and show that this model displays Hilbert space fragmentation on the Vicsek fractal lattice and the two-dimensional lattice. Using Monte Carlo methods, the model is characterized as strongly fragmented on the Vicsek fractal lattice when the number of domain walls is either small or close to the maximal value. On the two-dimensional lattice, the model is strongly fragmented when the density of domain walls is low and weakly fragmented when the density of domain walls is high. Furthermore, we show that the fragmentation persists at a finite density of domain walls in the thermodynamic limit for the Vicsek fractal lattice and the two-dimensional lattice. We also show that the model displays signatures similar to Hilbert space fragmentation on a section of the second-generation hexaflake fractal lattice and a modified two-dimensional lattice. Hilbert space fragmentation provides a mechanism to break ergodicity in closed many-body systems. Here, we propose a realistic scheme to comprehensively explore this exotic paradigm on a Rydberg quantum simulator. We show that the Rydberg Ising model in the large detuning regime can be mapped to a generalized folded XXZ model featuring a strongly fragmented Hilbert space. The emergent Hamiltonian, however, displays distinct time scales for the transport of a magnon and a hole excitation. This interesting property facilitates a continuous tuning of the Krylov-subspace ergodicity, from the integrable regime, to the Krylov-restricted thermal phase, and eventually to the statistical bubble localization region. By further introducing nonlocal interactions, we find that both the fragmentation behavior and the ergodicity of the Krylov subspace can be significantly enriched. We also examine the role of atomic position disorders and identify a symmetry-selective many-body localization transition. The eigenstate thermalization hypothesis describes how most isolated many-body quantum systems reach thermal equilibrium. However, the hypothesis is violated by phenomena such as many-body localization and quantum many-body scars. In this work, we study a finite, two-dimensional, disordered model hosting a tower of scar states. This construction is a particular instance of a general framework and we demonstrate its generality by constructing two disordered models hosting a different tower of scar states. At weak disorder, we find numerically that the spectra are nonthermal, and the scar states appear as exact eigenstates with high entropy for certain bipartitions. At strong disorder, the spectra localize and the scar states are identified as inverted scars since the scar states are embedded in a localized background as opposed to a thermal background. We argue that, for the considered type of models, the localization is stronger than what would be naively expected, and we show this explicitly for one of the models. The argument also provides guidelines for obtaining similarly strong localization in other scarred models. We study the transition from the thermal phase to localization by observing the adjacent gap ratio shifting from the Wigner surmise to the Poisson distribution with increasing disorder strength. Moreover, the entanglement entropy transitions from volume-law scaling with system size at weak disorder to area-law scaling at strong disorder. Adiabatic time evolution of quantum systems is a widely used tool with applications ranging from state preparation through simplifications of computations and topological transformations to optimization and quantum computing. Adiabatic time evolution generally works well for gapped ground states, but not for thermal states in the middle of the spectrum that lack a protecting energy gap. Here we show that quantum many-body scars -- a particular type of highly excited states -- are suitable for adiabatic time evolution despite the absence of a protecting energy gap. Considering two rather different models, namely a one-dimensional model constructed from tensor networks and a two-dimensional fractional quantum Hall model with anyons, we find that the quantum scars perform similarly to gapped ground states with respect to adiabatic dynamics when the required final adiabatic fidelity is around 0.99. The maximum speed at which the scar state of the one-dimensional model can be adiabatically transformed decreases as a power law with system size, as opposed to exponentially for both generic thermal and disorder-driven localized states. At constant and very low ramp speed, we find that the deviation of the fidelity from unity scales linearly with ramp speed for scar states, but quadratically for gapped ground states. The gapped ground states hence perform better when the required adiabatic fidelities are very high, such as 0.9999 and above. We identify two mechanisms for leakage out of the scar state and use them to explain our results. We study quench dynamics of bosonic fractional quantum Hall systems in small lattices with cylindrical boundary conditions and low particle density. The states studied have quasiholes or quasiparticles relative to the bosonic Laughlin state at half filling. Pinning potentials are placed at edge sites (or sites close to the edges) and are then turned off. Because the edges of fractional quantum Hall systems host chiral edge modes, we expect chiral dynamics, with motion in one direction for positive potentials pinning quasiholes, and motion in the other direction for negative potentials pinning quasiparticles. We numerically show that chiral motion of the density distribution is observed and robust for the case with positive potentials (quasiholes), but that there is no noticeable chiral motion for negative potentials (quasiparticles). The comparison of the numerical ground states with model lattice Laughlin wavefunctions suggests that both positive and negative potentials do create and pin anyons that are not necessarily well-separated on small lattices. Initializing the dynamics with the model state also shows the lack of chiral dynamics of quasiparticles. Our results suggest that, in small lattices with low particle density, quasiparticles are strongly adversely affected in dynamical processes, whereas quasiholes are dynamically robust., Comment: 13 pages, 10 figures

Topological phases have been reported on self-similar structures in the presence of a perpendicular magnetic field. Here, we present an understanding of these phases from a perspective of spectral flow and charge pumping. We study the Harper-Hofstadter model on self-similar structures constructed from the Sierpinski gasket. We numerically investigate the spectral flow and the associated charge pumping when a flux tube is inserted through the structure and the flux through the tube is varied adiabatically. We find that the nature of the spectral flow is qualitatively different from that of translationally invariant non-interacting systems with a perpendicular magnetic field. We show that the instantaneous eigenspectra can be used to understand the quantization of the charge pumped over a cycle, and hence to understand the topological character of the system. We show the correspondence between the local contributions to the Hall conductivity and the spectral flow of the edge-like states. We also show that the edge-like states can be approximated by eigenstates of the discrete angular-momentum operator, their chiral nature being a consequence of this., Comment: 13 pages, 10 figures

Laughlin states have recently been constructed on fractal lattices and have been shown to be topological in such systems. Some of their properties are, however, quite different from the two-dimensional case. On the Sierpinski triangle, for instance, the entanglement entropy shows oscillations as a function of particle number and does not obey the area law despite being topologically ordered, and the particle density is non-uniform in the bulk. Here, we investigate these deviant properties in greater detail on the Sierpinski triangle, and we also study the properties on the Sierpinski carpet and the T-fractal. We find that the density variations across the fractal are present for all the considered fractal lattices and for most choices of the number of particles. The size of anyons inserted into the lattice Laughlin state also varies with position on the fractal lattice. We observe that quasiholes and quasiparticles have similar sizes and that the size of the anyons typically increases with decreasing Hausdorff dimension. As opposed to periodic lattices in two dimensions, the Sierpinski triangle and carpet have inner edges. We construct trial states for both inner and outer edge states. We find that oscillations of the entropy as a function of particle number are present for the T-fractal, but not for the Sierpinski carpet. Recently, it was shown that fractional quantum Hall states can be defined on fractal lattices. Proposed exact parent Hamiltonians for these states are nonlocal and contain three-site terms. In this work, we look for simpler, approximate parent Hamiltonians for bosonic Laughlin states at half filling, which contain only onsite potentials and two-site hopping with the interaction generated implicitly by hardcore constraints (as in the Hofstadter and Kapit-Mueller models on periodic lattices). We use an ``inverse method'' to determine such Hamiltonians on finite-generation Sierpi\'{n}ski carpet and triangle lattices. The ground states of some of the resulting models display relatively high overlap with the model states if up to third neighbor hopping terms are considered, and by increasing the maximum hopping distance one can achieve nearly perfect overlaps. When the number of particles is reduced and additional potentials are introduced to trap quasiholes, the overlap with a model quasihole wavefunction is also high in some cases, especially for the nonlocal Hamiltonians. Isolated quantum many-body systems are often well-described by the eigenstate thermalization hypothesis. There are, however, mechanisms that cause different behavior: many-body localization and quantum many-body scars. Here, we show how one can find disordered Hamiltonians hosting a tower of scars by adapting a known method for finding parent Hamiltonians. Using this method, we construct a spin-1/2 model which is both partially localized and contains scars. We demonstrate that the model is partially localized by studying numerically the level spacing statistics and bipartite entanglement entropy. As disorder is introduced, the adjacent gap ratio transitions from the Gaussian orthogonal ensemble to the Poisson distribution and the entropy shifts from volume-law to area-law scaling. We investigate the properties of scars in a partially localized background and compare with a thermal background. At strong disorder, states initialized inside or outside the scar subspace display different dynamical behavior but have similar entanglement entropy and Schmidt gap. We demonstrate that localization stabilizes scar revivals of initial states with support both inside and outside the scar subspace. We show that topological characterization and classification in $D$-dimensional systems, which are thermodynamically large in only $D-\delta$ dimensions and finite in size in $\delta$ dimensions, is fundamentally different from that of systems thermodynamically large in all $D$-dimensions: as $(D-\delta)$-dimensional topological boundary states permeate into a system's $D$ dimensional bulk with decreasing system size, they hybridize to create novel topological phases characterized by a set of $\delta+1$ topological invariants, ranging from the $D$-dimensional topological invariant to the $(D-\delta)$-dimensional topological invariant. The system exhibits topological response signatures and bulk-boundary correspondences governed by combinations of these topological invariants taking non-trivial values, with lower-dimensional topological invariants characterizing fragmentation of the underlying topological phase of the system thermodynamically large in all $D$-dimensions. We show that the rainbow state, which has volume law entanglement entropy for most choices of bipartitions, can be embedded in a many-body localized spectrum. For a broad range of disorder strengths in the resulting model, we numerically find a narrow window of highly entangled states in the spectrum, embedded in a sea of area law entangled states. The construction hence embeds mobility edges in many-body localized systems. We search for short-range Hamiltonians of finite spin-1 kagome systems, maximizing the overlaps with lattice Moore-Read states. Our starting point is an exact, long-range parent Hamiltonian for such a state on a finite plane, obtained from conformal field theory. A truncation procedure is applied to it, which retains only short-range terms and makes it easy to define the Hamiltonian on a torus. Finally, the remaining coefficients are optimized, to yield maximized overlaps between exact diagonalization results and model ground states. In the best cases, these overlaps exceed 0.9 and 0.8 for the three lowest states of 12- and 18-site systems, respectively, suggesting that the obtained Hamiltonians are good parent Hamiltonians for a non-Abelian topological order., Comment: This is the final version published in PRB. Laughlin states have recently been constructed on fractal lattices, and the charge and braiding statistics of the quasiholes were used to confirm that these states have Laughlin type topology. Here, we investigate density, correlation, and entanglement properties of the states on a fractal lattice derived from a Sierpinski triangle with the purpose of identifying similarities and differences compared to two-dimensional systems and with the purpose of investigating whether various probes of topology work for fractal lattices. Similarly to two-dimensional systems, we find that the connected particle-particle correlation function decays roughly exponentially with the distance between the lattice sites measured in the two-dimensional plane, but the values also depend on the local environment. Contrary to two-dimensional systems, we find that the entanglement entropy does not follow the area law if one defines the area to be the number of nearest neighbor bonds that cross the edge of the selected subsystem. Considering bipartitions with two bonds crossing the edge, we find a close to logarithmic scaling of the entanglement entropy with the number of sites in the subsystem. This also means that the topological entanglement entropy cannot be extracted using the Kitaev-Preskill or the Levin-Wen methods. Studying the entanglement spectrum for different bipartitions, we find that the number of states below the entanglement gap is robust and the same as for Laughlin states on two-dimensional lattices., Comment: 10 pages, 10 figures

Isolated quantum systems typically follow the eigenstate thermalization hypothesis, but there are exceptions, such as many-body localized (MBL) systems and quantum many-body scars. Here, we present the study of a weak violation of MBL due to a special state embedded in a spectrum of MBL states. The special state is not MBL since it displays logarithmic scaling of the entanglement entropy and of the bipartite fluctuations of particle number with subsystem size. In contrast, the bulk of the spectrum becomes MBL as disorder is introduced. We study many-body localization in a hardcore boson model in the presence of random disorder on finite generation fractal lattices with different Hausdorff dimensions and different local lattice structures. In particular, we consider the Vicsek, T-shaped, Sierpinski gasket, and modified Koch-curve fractal lattices. In the single-particle case, these systems display Anderson localization for arbitrary disorder strength if they are large enough. In the many-body case, the systems available to exact diagonalization exhibit a transition between a delocalized and localized regime, visible in the spectral and entanglement properties of these systems. Robust edge transport can occur when particles in crystalline lattices interact with an external magnetic field. This system is well described by Bloch's theorem, with the spectrum being composed of bands of bulk states and in-gap edge states. When the confining lattice geometry is altered to be quasicrystaline, then Bloch's theorem breaks down. However, we still expect to observe the basic characteristics of bulk states and current carrying edge states. Here, we show that for quasicrystals in magnetic fields, there is also a third option; the bulk localised transport states. These states share the in-gap nature of the well-known edge states and can support transport along them, but they are fully contained within the bulk of the system, with no support along the edge. We consider both finite and infinite systems, using rigorous error controlled computational techniques that are not prone to finite-size effects. The bulk localised transport states are preserved for infinite systems, in stark contrast to the normal edge states. This allows for transport to be observed in infinite systems, without any perturbations, defects, or boundaries being introduced. We confirm the in-gap topological nature of the bulk localised transport states for finite and infinite systems by computing common topological measures; namely the Bott index and local Chern marker. The bulk localised transport states form due to a magnetic aperiodicity arising from the interplay of length scales between the magnetic field and quasiperiodic lattice. Bulk localised transport could have interesting applications similar to those of the edge states on the boundary, but that could now take advantage of the larger bulk of the lattice. There is a growing interest in searching for topology in fractal dimensions with the aim of finding different properties and advantages compared to the integer dimensional case. It has previously been shown that the Laughlin state can be adapted to fractal lattices. A key element in doing so is to replace the uniform background charge by a background charge that resides only on the lattice sites. This motivates the study of Hofstadter type models on fractal lattices, in which the magnetic field is present only at the lattice sites. Here, we study such models for hardcore bosons on finite lattices derived from the Sierpinski carpet and on square lattices with open boundary conditions. We find that the system sizes that we can investigate with exact diagonalization are generally too small to judge whether these local models are topological or not. Studying the particle densities on the lattices derived from the Sierpinski carpet, we find that the densities tend to accumulate in the regions that are locally similar to a square lattice. Such accumulation seems to be incompatible with the uniform densities in fractional quantum Hall systems, which might suggest that the models are not topological. Our computations provide guidance for future searches for topology in finite systems. Adiabatically exchanging anyons gives rise to topologically protected operations on the quantum state of the system, but the desired result is only achieved if the anyons are well separated, which requires a sufficiently large area. Being able to reduce the area needed for the exchange, however, would have several advantages, such as enabling a larger number of operations per area and allowing anyon exchange to be studied in smaller systems that are easier to handle. Here, we use optimization techniques to squeeze the charge distribution of Abelian anyons in lattice fractional quantum Hall models, and we show that the squeezed anyons can be exchanged within a smaller area with a close to ideal outcome. We first use a toy model consisting of a modified Laughlin trial state to show that one can shape the anyons without altering the exchange statistics under certain conditions. We then squeeze and braid anyons in the Kapit-Mueller model and an interacting Hofstadter model by adding suitable potentials. We consider a fixed system size, for which the charge distributions of the normal anyons overlap, and we find that the outcome of the exchange process is closer to the ideal value for the squeezed anyons. The time needed for the exchange is also important, and for a particular example we find that the duration needed for the process to be close to the adiabatic limit is about five times longer for the squeezed anyons when the path length is the same. Topologically non-trivial phases have recently been reported on self-similar structures. Here, we investigate the effect of local structure, specifically the role of the coordination number, on the topological phases on self-similar structures embedded in two dimensions. We study a geometry dependent model on two self-similar structures having different coordination numbers, constructed from the Sierpinski Gasket. For different non-spatial symmetries present in the system, we numerically study and compare the phases on both the structures. We characterize these phases by the localization properties of the single-particle states, their robustness to disorder, and by using a real-space topological index. We find that both the structures host topologically non-trivial phases and the phase diagrams are different on the two structures. This suggests that, in order to extend the present classification scheme of topological phases to non-periodic structures, one should use a framework which explicitly takes the coordination of sites into account., Comment: 9 pages, 12 figures

We use conformal field theory to construct model wavefunctions for a gapless interface between lattice versions of a bosonic Laughlin state and a fermionic Moore-Read state, both at $\nu=1/2$. The properties of the resulting model state, such as particle density, correlation function and R\'enyi entanglement entropy are then studied using the Monte Carlo approach. Moreover, we construct the wavefunctions also for anyonic excitations (quasiparticles and quasiholes). We study their density profile, charge and statistics. We show that, similarly to the Laughlin-Laughlin case studied earlier, some anyons (the Laughlin Abelian ones) can cross the interface, while others (the non-Abelian ones) lose their anyonic character in such a process. Also, we argue that, under an assumption of local particle exchange, multiple interfaces give rise to a topological degeneracy, which can be interpreted as originating from Majorana zero modes., Comment: Published in PRB. We construct few-body, interacting, nonlocal Hamiltonians with a quantum scar state in an otherwise thermalizing many-body spectrum. In one dimension, the embedded state is a critical state, and in two dimensions, the embedded state is a chiral topologically ordered state. The models are defined on slightly disordered lattices, and the scar state appears independent of the precise realization of the disorder. A parameter allows the scar state to be placed at any position in the spectrum. We show that the level spacing distributions are Wigner-Dyson and that the entanglement entropies of the states in the middle of the spectrum are close to the Page value. We present a class of quantum dimer models on the kagome lattice with full translational invariance that feature a quantum many-body scar state of analytically known entanglement properties within their spectra. Using exact diagonalization on lattices of up to 60 sites, we show that non-scar states conform to the eigenstate thermalization hypothesis. Trial states describing anyonic quasiholes in the Laughlin state were found early on, and it is therefore natural to expect that one should also be able to create anyonic quasielectrons. Nevertheless, the existing trial wavefunctions for quasielectrons show behaviors that are not compatible with the expected topological properties or their construction involves ad hoc elements. It was shown, however, that for lattice fractional quantum Hall systems, it is possible to find a relatively simple quasielectron wavefunction that has all the expected properties [New J. Phys. 20, 033029 (2018)]. This naturally poses the question: what happens to this wavefunction in the continuum limit? Here we demonstrate that, although one obtains a finite continuum wavefunction when the quasielectron is on top of a lattice site, such a limit of the lattice quasielectron does not exist in general. In particular, if the quasielectron is put anywhere else than on a lattice site, the lattice wavefunction diverges when the continuum limit is approached. The divergence can be removed by projecting the state on the lowest Landau level, but we find that the projected state does also not have the properties expected for anyonic quasielectrons. We hence conclude that the lattice quasielectron wavefunction does not solve the difficulty of finding trial states for anyonic quasielectrons in the continuum., Comment: 20 pages, 7 figures

The Haldane-Shastry model is one of the most studied interacting spin systems. The Yangian symmetry makes it exactly solvable, and the model has semionic excitations. We introduce disorder into the Haldane-Shastry model by allowing the spins to sit at random positions on the unit circle and study the properties of the eigenstates. At weak disorder, the spectrum is similar to the spectrum of the clean Haldane-Shastry model. At strong disorder, the long-range interactions in the model do not decay as a simple power law. The eigenstates in the middle of the spectrum follow a volume law, but the coefficient is small, and the entropy is hence much less than for an ergodic system. In addition, the energy level spacing statistics is neither Poissonian nor of the Wigner-Dyson type. The behavior at strong disorder hence serves as an example of a non-ergodic phase, which is not of the many-body localized kind, in a model with long-range interactions and SU(2) symmetry., Comment: Accepted for publication in PRB

Many-body localization (MBL) provides a mechanism to avoid thermalization in many-body quantum systems. Here, we show that an {\it emergent} symmetry can protect a state from MBL. Specifically, we propose a $\Z_2$ symmetric model with nonlocal interactions, which has an analytically known, SU(2) invariant, critical ground state. At large disorder strength all states at finite energy density are in a glassy MBL phase, while the lowest energy states are not. These do, however, localize when a perturbation destroys the emergent SU(2) symmetry. The model also provides an example of MBL in the presence of nonlocal, disordered interactions that are more structured than a power law. We define a class of tensor network states for spin systems where the individual tensors are functionals of fields. The construction is based on the path integral representation of correlators of operators in quantum field theory. These tensor network states are infinite dimensional versions of matrix product states and projected entangled pair states. We find the field-tensor that generates the Haldane-Shastry wave function and extend it to two dimensions. Considering lattice Hamiltonians designed using conformal field theory to have fractional quantum Hall states as ground states, we study the dynamics of one or two particles on such lattices. Examining the eigenspectrum and dynamics of the single-particle sector, we demonstrate that these Hamiltonians cannot be regarded as describing interacting particles placed on a Chern band, so that the physics is fundamentally different from fractional Chern insulators. The single-particle spectrum is shown to consist of eigenstates localized in shells which have larger radius for larger eigenenergies. We study the interfaces between lattice Laughlin states at different fillings. We propose a class of model wavefunctions for such systems constructed using conformal field theory. We find a nontrivial form of charge conservation at the interface, similar to the one encountered in the field theory works from the literature. Using Monte Carlo methods, we evaluate the correlation function and entanglement entropy at the border. Furthermore, we construct the wavefunction for quasihole excitations and evaluate their mutual statistics with respect to quasiholes originating at the same or the other side of the interface. We show that some of these excitations lose their anyonic statistics when crossing the interface, which can be interpreted as impermeability of the interface to these anyons. Contrary to most of the previous works on interfaces between topological orders, our approach is microscopic, allowing for a direct simulation of e.g. an anyon crossing the interface. We investigate the physics of quasicrystalline models in the presence of a uniform magnetic field, focusing on the presence and construction of topological states. This is done by using the Hofstadter model but with the sites and couplings denoted by the vertex model of the quasicrystal, giving the Hofstadter vertex model. We specifically consider two-dimensional quasicrystals made from tilings of two tiles with incommensurate areas, focusing on the five-fold Penrose and the eight-fold Ammann-Beenker tilings. This introduces two competing scales; the uniform magnetic field and the incommensurate scale of the cells of the tiling. Due to these competing scales the periodicity of the Hofstadter butterfly is destroyed. We observe the presence of topological edge states on the boundary of the system via the Bott index that exhibit two way transport along the edge. For the eight-fold tiling we also observe internal edge-like states with non-zero Bott index, which exhibit two way transport along this internal edge. The presence of these internal edge states is a new characteristic of quasicrystalline models in magnetic fields. We then move on to considering interacting systems. This is challenging, in part because exact diagonalization on a few tens of sites is not expected to be enough to accurately capture the physics of the quasicrystalline system, and in part because it is not clear how to construct topological flatbands having a large number of states. A number of tools have been developed to detect topological phase transitions in strongly correlated quantum systems. They apply under different conditions, but do not cover the full range of many-body models. It is hence desirable to further expand the toolbox. Here, we propose to use quasiparticle properties to detect quantum phase transitions. The approach is independent from the choice of boundary conditions, and it does not assume a particular lattice structure. The probe is hence suitable for, e.g., fractals and quasicrystals. The method requires that one can reliably create quasiparticles in the considered systems. In the simplest cases, this can be done by a pinning potential, while it is less straightforward in more complicated systems. We apply the method to several rather different examples, including one that cannot be handled by the commonly used probes, and in all the cases we find that the numerical costs are low. This is so, because a simple property, such as the charge of the anyons, is sufficient to detect the phase transition point. For some of the examples, this allows us to study larger systems and/or further parameter values compared to previous studies., Comment: 7 pages, 5 figures

The fractional quantum Hall effect is a paradigm of topological order and has been studied thoroughly in two dimensions. Here, we construct a new type of fractional quantum Hall system, which has the special property that it lives in fractal dimensions. We provide analytical wave functions and exact few-body parent Hamiltonians, and we show numerically for several different Hausdorff dimensions between 1 and 2 that the systems host anyons. We also find examples of fractional quantum Hall physics in fractals with Hausdorff dimension 1 and ln(4)/ln(5). Our results suggest that the local structure of the investigated fractals is more important than the Hausdorff dimension to determine whether the systems are in the desired topological phase. We propose that weak continuous probing may be exploited to determine and define quantum phases of complex many-body systems based on the measurement record alone. We test the resulting phase criterion in numerical simulations of measurements on the Bose-Hubbard model and the quantum Ising chain. This yields a phase transition point in reasonable agreement with the quantum phase transition in the ground state of the closed system in the thermodynamic limit, despite the system being highly excited through the measurement dynamics. At high measurement strengths, the system's response enters a Zeno regime suppressing transitions between eigenstates of the measurement operator., Comment: 15 pages, 9 figures

Conformal field theory has recently been applied to derive few-body Hamiltonians whose ground states are lattice versions of fractional quantum Hall states. The exact lattice models involve interactions over long distances, which is difficult to realize in experiments. It seems, however, that such long-range interactions should not be necessary, as the correlations decay exponentially in the bulk. This poses the question, whether the Hamiltonians can be truncated to contain only local interactions without changing the physics of the ground state. Previous studies have in a couple of cases with particularly much symmetry obtained such local Hamiltonians by keeping only a few local terms and numerically optimizing the coefficients. Here, we investigate a different strategy to construct truncated Hamiltonians, which does not rely on optimization, and which can be applied independent of the choice of lattice. We test the approach on two models with bosonic Laughlin-like ground states with filling factor $1/2$ and $1/4$, respectively. We first investigate how the coupling strengths in the exact Hamiltonians depend on distance, and then we study the truncated models. For the case of $1/2$ filling, we find that the truncated model with truncation radius $\sqrt{2}$ lattice constants on the square lattice and $1$ lattice constant on the triangular lattice has an approximate twofold ground state degeneracy on the torus, and the overlap per site between these states and the states constructed from conformal field theory is higher than $0.99$ for the lattices considered. For the model at $1/4$ filling, our results give some hints that a truncation radius of $\sqrt{5}$ on the square lattice and $\sqrt{7}$ on the triangular lattice might be enough, but the finite size effects are too large to judge whether the topology is, indeed, present in the thermodynamic limit., Comment: 8 Pages, 10 Figures

Moore-Read states can be expressed as conformal blocks of the underlying rational conformal field theory, which provides a well explored description for the insertion of quasiholes. It is known, however, that quasielectrons are more difficult to describe in continuous systems, since the natural guess for how to construct them leads to a singularity. In this work, we show that the singularity problem does not arise for lattice Moore-Read states. This allows us to construct Moore-Read Pfaffian states on lattices for filling fraction 5/2 with both quasiholes and quasielectrons in a simple way. We investigate the density profile, charge, size and braiding properties of the anyons by means of Monte Carlo simulations. Further we derive an exact few-body parent Hamiltonian for the states. Finally, we compare our results to the density profile, charge and shape of anyons in the Kapit-Mueller model by means of exact diagonalization., Comment: 10 pages, 5 figures

This work concerns Ising quasiholes in Moore-Read type lattice wave functions derived from conformal field theory. We commence with constructing Moore-Read type lattice states and then add quasiholes to them. By use of Metropolis Monte Carlo simulations, we analyze the features of the quasiholes, such as their size, shape, charge, and braiding properties. The braiding properties, which turn out to be the same as in the continuum Moore-Read state, demonstrate the topological attributes of the Moore-Read lattice states in a direct way. We also derive parent Hamiltonians for which the states with quasiholes included are ground states. One advantage of these Hamiltonians lies therein that we can now braid the quasiholes just by changing the coupling strengths in the Hamiltonian since the Hamiltonian is a function of the positions of the quasiholes. The methodology exploited in this article can also be used to construct other kinds of lattice fractional quantum Hall models containing quasiholes, for example investigation of Fibonacci quasiholes in lattice Read-Rezayi states., Comment: 20 pages, 6 figures

We study nonchiral wave functions for systems with continuous spins obtained from the conformal field theory (CFT) of a free, massless boson. In contrast to the case of discrete spins, these can be treated as bosonic Gaussian states, which allows us to efficiently compute correlations and entanglement properties both in one (1D) and in two spatial dimensions (2D). In 1D, the computed entanglement entropy and spectra are in agreement with the underlying CFT. Furthermore, we construct a 1D parent Hamiltonian with a low-energy spectrum corresponding to that of a free, massless boson. Quantum state preparation is vital to quantum computation and quantum information processing tasks. In adiabatic state preparation, the target state is theoretically obtained with nearly perfect fidelity if the control parameter is tuned slowly enough. As this, however, leads to slow dynamics, it is often desirable to be able to do processes faster. In this work, we employ two global optimization methods to estimate the quantum speed limit for few-fermion systems confined in a one-dimensional harmonic trap. Such systems can be produced experimentally in a well controlled manner. We determine the optimized control fields and achieve a reduction in the ramping time of more than a factor of four compared to linear ramping. Conformal field theory has turned out to be a powerful tool to derive interesting lattice models with analytical ground states. Here, we investigate a class of critical, one-dimensional lattice models of fermions and hardcore bosons related to the Laughlin states. The Hamiltonians of the exact models involve interactions over long distances that are difficult to realize experimentally. This motivates us to study the properties of models with the same type of interactions, but now only between nearest and possibly next-nearest neighbor sites. Based on computations of wavefunction overlaps, entanglement entropies, and two-site correlation functions for systems of up to 32 sites, we find that the ground state is close to the ground state of the exact model. There is also a high overlap per site between the lowest excited states for the local and the exact models, although the energies of the low-lying excited states are modified to some extent for the system sizes considered. When describing the low-energy physics of bosons in a double-well potential with a high barrier between the wells and sufficiently weak atom-atom interactions, one can to a good approximation ignore the high energy states and thereby obtain an effective two-mode model. Here, we show that the regime in which the two-mode model is valid can be extended by adding an on-site three-body interaction term and a three-body interaction-induced tunneling term to the two-mode Hamiltonian. These terms effectively account for virtual transitions to the higher energy states. We determine appropriate strengths of the three-body terms by an optimization of the minimal value of the wave function overlap within a certain time window. Considering different initial states with three or four atoms, we find that the resulting model accurately captures the dynamics of the system for parameters where the two-mode model without the three-body terms is poor. We also investigate the dependence of the strengths of the three-body terms on the barrier height and the atom-atom interaction strength. Strongly interacting topologically ordered many-body systems consisting of fermions or bosons can host exotic quasiparticles with anyonic statistics. This raises the question whether many-body systems of anyons can also form anyonic quasiparticles. Here, we show that one can, indeed, construct many-anyon wavefunctions with anyonic quasiparticles. The braiding statistics of the emergent anyons are different from those of the original anyons. We consider a family of spin-1/2 models with few-body, SU(2) invariant Hamiltonians and analytical ground states related to the 1D Haldane-Shastry wavefunction. The spins are placed on the surface of a cylinder, and the standard 1D Haldane-Shastry model is obtained by placing the spins with equal spacing in a circle around the cylinder. Here, we show that another interesting family of models with two-body exchange interactions is obtained if we instead place the spins along one or two lines parallel to the cylinder axis, giving rise to chain and ladder models, respectively. We can change the scale along the cylinder axis without changing the radius of the cylinder. This gives us a parameter that controls the ratio between the circumference of the cylinder and all other length scales in the system. We use Monte Carlo simulations and analytical investigations to study how this ratio affects the properties of the models. If the ratio is large, we find that the two legs of the ladder decouple into two chains that are in a critical phase with Haldane-Shastry-like properties. If the ratio is small, the wavefunction reduces to a product of singlets. In between, we find that the behavior of the correlations and the Renyi entropy depends on the distance considered. For small distances the behavior is critical, and for long distances the correlations decay exponentially and the entropy shows an area law behavior. We study states of one- and two-dimensional spin systems that are constructed as correlators within the conformal field theory of a massless, free boson. In one dimension, these are good variational wave functions for XXZ spin chains and they are similar to lattice Laughlin states in two dimensions. We show that their zz correlations are determined by a modification of the original free-boson theory. An expansion to quadratic order leads to a solvable, effective theory for the correlations in these states. Compared to the massless boson, there is an additional term in this effective theory that explains the behavior of the correlations: a polynomial decay in one dimension and at the edge of a two-dimensional system and an exponential decay in the bulk of a two-dimensional system. We investigate lattice effects on wave functions that are lattice analogues of bosonic and fermionic Laughlin wave functions with number of particles per flux $\nu=1/q$ in the Landau levels. These wave functions are defined analytically on lattices with $\mu$ particles per lattice site, where $\mu$ may be different than $\nu$. We give numerical evidence that these states have the same topological properties as the corresponding continuum Laughlin states for different values of $q$ and for different fillings $\mu$. These states define, in particular, particle-hole symmetric lattice Fractional Quantum Hall states when the lattice is half-filled. On the square lattice it is observed that for $q\leq 4$ this particle-hole symmetric state displays the topological properties of the continuum Laughlin state at filling fraction $\nu=1/q$, while for larger $q$ there is a transition towards long-range ordered anti-ferromagnets. This effect does not persist if the lattice is deformed from a square to a triangular lattice, or on the Kagome lattice, in which case the topological properties of the state are recovered. We then show that changing the number of particles while keeping the expression of these wave functions identical gives rise to edge states that have the same correlations in the bulk as the reference lattice Laughlin states but a different density at the edge. We derive an exact parent Hamiltonian for which all these edge states are ground states with different number of particles. In addition this Hamiltonian admits the reference lattice Laughlin state as its unique ground state of filling factor $1/q$. Parent Hamiltonians are also derived for the lattice Laughlin states at other fillings of the lattice, when $\mu\leq 1/q$ or $\mu\geq 1-1/q$ and when $q=4$ also at half-filling., Comment: 18 pages, 15 figures

From an experimental point of view, quasielectrons and quasiholes play very similar roles in the fractional quantum Hall effect. Nevertheless, the theoretical description of quasielectrons is known to be much harder than the one of quasiholes. The problem is that one obtains a singularity in the wavefunction if one tries to naively construct the quasielectron as the inverse of the quasihole. Here, we demonstrate that the same problem does not arise in lattice fractional quantum Hall models. This result allows us to make detailed investigations of the properties of quasielectrons, including their braiding statistics and density distribution on lattices on the plane and on the torus. We show that some of the states considered have high overlap with certain fractional Chern insulator states. We study lattice wave functions obtained from the SU(2)$_1$ Wess-Zumino-Witten conformal field theory. Following Moore and Read's construction, the Kalmeyer-Laughlin fractional quantum Hall state is defined as a correlation function of primary fields. By an additional insertion of Kac-Moody currents, we associate a wave function to each state of the conformal field theory. These wave functions span the complete Hilbert space of the lattice system. On the cylinder, we study global properties of the lattice states analytically and correlation functions numerically using a Metropolis Monte Carlo method. By comparing short-range bulk correlations, numerical evidence is provided that the states with one current operator represent edge states in the thermodynamic limit. We show that the edge states with one Kac-Moody current of lowest order have a good overlap with low-energy excited states of a local Hamiltonian, for which the Kalmeyer-Laughlin state approximates the ground state. For some states, exact parent Hamiltonians are derived on the cylinder. Conformal field theory has turned out to be a powerful tool to derive two-dimensional lattice models displaying fractional quantum Hall physics. So far most of the work has been for lattices with open boundary conditions in at least one of the two directions, but it is desirable to also be able to handle the case of periodic boundary conditions. Here, we take steps in this direction by deriving analytical expressions for a family of conformal field theory states on the torus that is closely related to the family of bosonic and fermionic Laughlin states. We compute how the states transform when a particle is moved around the torus and when the states are translated or rotated, and we provide numerical evidence in particular cases that the states become orthonormal up to a common factor for large lattices. We use these results to find the S-matrix of the states, which turns out to be the same as for the continuum Laughlin states.
