Background: The majority of childhood cancer survivors (CCSs) have been exposed to cardiotoxic treatments and often present with modifiable cardiovascular risk factors. Our aim was to evaluate the value of left ventricular (LV) longitudinal strain for increasing the sensitivity of cardiac dysfunction detection among CCSs. Methods: We combined two national cohorts: neuroblastoma and other childhood cancer survivors treated with anthracyclines. The final data consisted of 90 long-term CCSs exposed to anthracyclines and/or high-dose chemotherapy with autologous stem cell rescue and followed up for > 5 years and their controls (n = 86). LV longitudinal strain was assessed with speckle tracking (Qlab) and LV ejection fraction (EF) by three-dimensional echocardiography (3DE). Results: Of the CCSs, 11% (10/90) had abnormal LV longitudinal strain (i.e., < -17.5%); of those, 70% (7/10) had normal 3DE LV EF. Multivariable linear model analysis demonstrated that follow-up time (p = 0.027), sex (p = 0.020), and BMI (p = 0.002) were significantly associated with LV longitudinal strain. Conversely, cardiac risk group, hypertension, age, cumulative anthracycline dose or exposure to chest radiation were not. Conclusion: LV longitudinal strain is a more sensitive method than LV EF for the detection of cardiac dysfunction among CCSs. This article focuses on the culture of the recruitment and selection for the international crisis management operations within the Finnish Defence Forces. e aim of the study was to understand the recruitment and selection process of personnel experienced by the applicants and recruiters. e data was collected through semi-structured interviews from nine (N=9) army o cers served in the UNIFIL III (Lebanon) during years 2013–2014 and through an open questionnaire in 2015 from the recruitment personnel of the human resource (HR) sections (N=21) located in the all Bridages of the Finnish Army.The results showed that the current recruitment process requires the applicant’s activity and ability to take advantages of the opportunities found in the process. In addition, the study showed that personnel attitudes towards crisis management tasks can be interpreted to re ect two separate and distinct organizational subcultures; crisis-management-orientation appeared to be encouraging and supporting applicants, while domestic-orientation appeared for them as resistance. Tutkimuksessa tarkastellaan Jyväskylän yliopiston Tietoyhteiskunta, viestintä ja liiketoiminta –suuntautumisvaihtoehdosta (TVL) valmistuvien kokemuksia heidän työelämävalmiuksistaan. Aihetta lähestytään työelämässä koettujen onnistumisten sekä riittämättömyyden kokemusten kuvailulla. Lisäksi käsitellään haastateltavien kokemuksia siitä, mitä työnsä kannalta oleellisia tietoja ja taitoja he ovat oppineet erityisesti TVL-suuntautumisvaihtoehdon koulutuksessa. Aineiston hankintatapana on käytetty teemahaastatteluja. Haastatteluihin osallistui kaksi TVL-suuntautumisvaihtoehdosta valmistunutta sekä kaksi opintojensa loppuvaiheessa olevaa opiskelijaa. Kaikki haastateltavat olivat työskennelleet oman alansa töissä alle kaksi vuotta. Haastattelut litteroitiin ja analysoitiin kvalitatiivisilla menetelmillä. Haastateltavat liittivät onnistumisen kokemuksiinsa rajanylitystaidot, viestintä- ja vuorovaikutustaidot, progressiivisen ongelmanratkaisun ja luovuuden, kriittisen ajattelun, reflektiivisyyden ja oppimisen taidot, rutiinieksperttiyden sekä kulttuurien tuntemuksen. Riittämättömyyden kokemuksiin liitettiin työelämän kompleksisuus, nuori asiantuntijuus, eettisyys sekä työelämän epävarmuus. TVL-koulutus nähtiin työhön valmistavana. Erityisen hyödyllisenä pidettiin kursseja, jotka olivat sovellettavissa omiin työtehtäviin. Myös epäsuorasti työhön valmistavat kurssit nähtiin ajattelun rikastajana. Asiantuntijuuden koettiin syntyneen osittain myös koulutuksen ulkopuolella. The study examines working life readiness of the university students who have graduated or are about to graduate from the master of studies called Information society, communication and business (ICB). The topic is approached by description of perceived success and inadequacy of the interviewees. In addition the study presents notions from the interviewees about what they have learned specific in the ICB training. Data has been collected by means of theme interviews. Two of the interviewees have graduated from the ICB studies and two of the interviewees are about to graduate. Each of the interviewees had worked less than two years at jobs of their own field. The theme interviews were transcribed and analyzed by qualitative methods. The interviewees linked crossing skills, communication and interpersonal skills, progressive problem solving and creativity, critical thinking, reflection and learning skills, routine expertise and cultural knowledge as their experiences of success. Perceived inadequacy was affiliated with the complexity of working life, young expertise, ethics and insecurity of working life. ICB training was seen as preparatory in general. The courses which were seen particularly useful were specific related to the work duties of the interviewees. This work combines the cognitive theory of folk-theoretical thought with the classical Aristotelian theory of artistic proof in rhetoric. The first half of the work discusses the common ground shared by the elements of artistic proof (logos, pathos, ethos) and the elements of folk-theoretical thought (naïve physics, folk biology, folk psychology, naïve sociology). Combining rhetoric with the cognitive theory of folk-theoretical thought creates a new point of view for argumentation analysis. The logos of an argument can be understood as the inferential relations established between the different parts of an argument. Consequently, within this study the analysis of logos is to be viewed as the analysis of the inferential folk-theoretical elements that make the suggested factual states-of-things appear plausible within given argumentative structures. The pathos of an argumentative structure can be understood as determining the quality of the argumentation in question in the sense that emotive elements play a great part in what can be called a distinction between good and deceptive rhetoric. In the context of this study the analysis of pathos is to be viewed as the analysis of the emotive content of argumentative structures and of whether they aim at facilitating surface- or deep cognitive elaboration of the suggested matters. The ethos of an argumentative structure means both the speaker-presentation and audience-construct that can be discerned within a body of argumentation. In the context of this study, the analysis of ethos is to be understood as the analysis of mutually manifest cognitive environments in the context of argumentation. The theory is used to analyse Catholic Internet discussion concerning cloning. The discussion is divided into six themes: Human Dignity, Sacred Family, Exploitation / Dehumanisation, Playing God, Monsters and Horror Scenarios and Ensoulment. Each theme is analysed for both the rhetorical and the cognitive elements that can be seen creating persuasive force within the argumentative structures presented. It is apparent that the Catholic voices on the Internet extensively oppose cloning. The voices utilise rhetoric that is aggressive and pejorative more often than not. Furthermore, deceptive rhetoric (in the sense presented above) plays a great part in argumentative structures of the Catholic voices. The theory of folk-theoretical thought can be seen as a useful tool for analysing the possible reasons why the Catholic speakers think about cloning and choose to present cloning in their argumentation as they do. The logos utilized in the argumentative structures presented can usually be viewed as based on folk-theoretical inference concerning biology and psychology. The structures of pathos utilized generally appear to aim at generating fear appeal in the assumed audiences, often incorporating counter-intuitive elements. The ethos utilised in the arguments generally revolves around Christian mythology and issues of social responsibility. These structures can also be viewed from the point of view of folk psychology and naïve sociological assumptions. Tutkimus jakaantuu teoreettiseen ja soveltavaan osaan. Työn teoreettisessa osassa yhdistetään kognitiivisen antropologian teoriaa kansanteoreettisesta ajattelusta klassiseen Aristoteleen retoriikan kolmijakoon. Kansanteoreettisella ajattelulla tarkoitetaan pähkinänkuoressa sitä, että ihmisillä on luonnollisia ajattelutaipumuksia, jotka ohjaavat automaattisesti ja usein huomaamatta arkista päättelyä. Automaattisia päättelysääntöjä esiintyy esineiden, biologisten ilmiöiden sekä psykologisten ja sosiologisten asioiden tulkinnassa. Klassinen retoriikan kolmijako puolestaan tarkoittaa argumentaatiossa käytettäviä vakuuttamisen keinoja, jotka voidaan jakaa kolmeen ryhmään: asian järkeenkäypä esittäminen (logos), tunteisiin vetoaminen (pathos) ja jaettuihin mielikuviin vetoaminen (ethos). Teorioita yhdistämällä on tarkoitus luoda uusi näkökulma argumenttien analysoimiseen. Soveltavassa osassa tarkastellaan yllä mainitusta kognitiivis-retorisesta näkökulmasta käsin katolista, Internetissä käytävää kloonauskeskustelua. Analyysissa katolinen keskustelu jakautui kuuteen hallitsevaan teemaan. Nämä ovat: 1) Ihmisen arvokkuuden puolustaminen. Katoliset puhujat kokevat, että keinotekoinen (teknologinen) puuttuminen ihmisen syntyyn loukkaa ihmisen arvokkuutta Jumalan luomana olentona. 2) Perheen pyhyys. Teema on osittain tuttu katolisen aborttiretoriikan puolelta: puhujat kokevat, että kantasolututkimus on sikiöitten massamurhaa. Lisäksi katsotaan, että ihmisten kloonaaminen lasten hankkimistarkoituksessa aiheuttaa sekaannuksia Jumalan säätämään perhejärjestykseen, joka on katolisen opin mukaan hyvin merkittävä toimivan yhteiskunnan peruspilari. 3) Hyväksikäyttö / epäinhimillistäminen. Katoliset puhujat ovat sitä mieltä, että kloonaaminen edustaa ihmisten radikaalia hyväksikäyttöä. Genetiikkateollisuuden hampaisiin joutuvat puhujien mukaan etenkin ihmisalkiot, mutta myös naiset, joiden ruumiita kaupallistetaan geeniteknologian nimissä. 4) Jumalan leikkiminen. Puhujat katsovat, että kloonaaminen edustaa syntiin langenneen ihmisen yritystä kapinoida luojaansa vastaan astumalla alueelle, jonne ei luomisjärjestyksen mukaa ole asiaa. 5) Hirviöt ja kauhuskenaariot. Suora seuraus edellisestä: katoliset puhujat esittävät kloonit ja kloonaajat sekä genetiikkateollisuuden hirviöinä. Hypoteettinen maailma, jossa kloonaaminen sallitaan, esitetään kammottavana, totalitaarisena paikkana. 6) Sieluttaminen. Katoliset maallikot pohtivat, voiko kloonilla olla sielu. Osa puhujista argumentoi, että kloonattu ihminen on tyhjä astia, jonka irrallaan kuljeksivat demonit voivat helposti ottaa haltuunsa. Toiset edustavat kantaa, jonka mukaan klooni olisi tavallinen sielutettu ihminen, kuten esimerkiksi keinohedelmöitetyt lapset vaikuttavat olevan. Tutkimuksen perusteella voi sanoa, että on hyvin todennäköistä, että kansanteoreettiset ajattelutaipumukset ovat vaikuttaneet katolisiin kloonausasenteisiin. Kansanteoreettinen ajattelu vaikuttaa sekä rakenteellisella tasolla niihin retorisiin keinoihin, joita kloonausargumentaatiossa käytetään, että käsitteellisellä tasolla niihin intuitiivisiin konsepteihin, joita kloonauksesta ja klooneista muodostetaan. Ideana klooni rikkoo sekä kansanbiologisia että kansansosiologisia intuitioita, ja tästä syystä kloonia on vaikea sisällyttää normaalien kansanteoreettisten tulkintojen puitteisiin. Seurauksena näistä automaattisista ajattelutaipumuksista on pelkoa, ennakkoluuloja ja korostuneen kielteinen asenne sekä kloonausta että todennäköisesti koko geeniteknologiaa kohtaan. more...

Naistutkimuksen tieteellisyys ja tulevaisuus riippuvat siitä, ottaako se huomioon evoluution ja universaalin ihmisluonnon, esimerkiksi lajillemme tyypillisen lisääntymispsykologian sekä perhe- ja moraalitunteet. Naisasialiikkeen uranuurtaja Minna Canth ymmärsi tämän. Sari Charpentier (Tieteessä tapahtuu 8/2005) ei ota kantaa edellisessä Tieteessä tapahtuu -lehdessä esitettyihin tosiasiaväitteisiin (Tammisalo 2005a). Hän ei kajoa ihmisluontoa koskevaan tutkimukseen, vaikka nimenomaan sen avulla naistutkimusta kritisoitiin. more...
