Abstract

The multiplicities of positive and negative pions, kaons and unidentified hadrons produced in deep-inelastic scattering are measured in bins of the Bjorken scaling variable $x$, the relative virtual-photon energy $y$ and the fraction of the virtual-photon energy transferred to the final-state hadron $z$. Data were obtained by the COMPASS Collaboration using a 160 GeV muon beam of both electric charges and a liquid hydrogen target. These measurements cover the kinematic domain with photon virtuality $Q^2 > 1$ (GeV/$c)^2$, $0.004 < x < 0.4$, $0.1 < y < 0.7$ and $0.2 < z < 0.85$, in accordance with the kinematic domain used in earlier published COMPASS multiplicity measurements with an isoscalar target. The calculation of radiative corrections was improved by using the Monte Carlo generator DJANGOH, which results in up to 12\% larger corrections in the low-$x$ region., Comment: 19 pages, 29 figures

Abstract

New results are presented on a high-statistics measurement of Collins and Sivers asymmetries of charged hadrons produced in deep inelastic scattering of muons on a transversely polarised $^6$LiD target. The data were taken in 2022 with the COMPASS spectrometer using the 160 \gevv\ muon beam at CERN, balancing the existing data on transversely polarised proton targets. The first results from about two-thirds of the new data have total uncertainties smaller by up to a factor of three compared to the previous deuteron measurements. Using all the COMPASS proton and deuteron results, both the transversity and the Sivers distribution functions of the $u$ and $d$ quark, as well as the tensor charge in the measured $x$-range are extracted. In particular, the accuracy of the $d$ quark results is significantly improved.

Abstract

The COMPASS Collaboration performed measurements of the Drell-Yan process in 2015 and 2018 using a 190 GeV/c $\pi^{-}$ beam impinging on a transversely polarised ammonia target. Combining the data of both years, we present final results on the amplitudes of the five azimuthal modulations in the dimuon production cross section. Three of these transverse-spin-dependent azimuthal asymmetries (TSAs) probe the nucleon leading-twist Sivers, transversity, and pretzelosity transverse-momentum dependent (TMD) parton distribution functions (PDFs). The other two are induced by subleading effects. These TSAs provide unique new inputs for the study of the nucleon TMD PDFs and their universality properties. In particular, the Sivers TSA observed in this measurement is consistent with the fundamental QCD prediction of a sign change of naive time-reversal-odd TMD PDFs when comparing the Drell-Yan process with semi-inclusive measurements of deep inelastic scattering. Also, within the context of model predictions, the observed transversity TSA is consistent with the expectation of a sign change for the Boer-Mulders function.

Abstract

We report on a measurement of Spin Density Matrix Elements (SDMEs) in hard exclusive $\rho ^0$ meson muoproduction at COMPASS using 160~GeV/$c$ polarised $ \mu ^{+}$ and $ \mu ^{-}$ beams impinging on a liquid hydrogen target. The measurement covers the kinematic range 5.0~GeV/$c^2$ $< W <$ 17.0~GeV/$c^2$, 1.0 (GeV/$c$)$^2$ $< Q^2 <$ 10.0 (GeV/$c$)$^2$ and 0.01 (GeV/$c$)$^2$ $< p_{\rm{T}}^2 <$ 0.5 (GeV/$c$)$^2$. Here, $W$ denotes the mass of the final hadronic system, $Q^2$ the virtuality of the exchanged photon, and $p_{\rm{T}}$ the transverse momentum of the $\rho ^0$ meson with respect to the virtual-photon direction. The measured non-zero SDMEs for the transitions of transversely polarised virtual photons to longitudinally polarised vector mesons ($\gamma^*_T \to V^{ }_L$) indicate a violation of $s$-channel helicity conservation. Additionally, we observe a dominant contribution of natural-parity-exchange transitions and a very small contribution of unnatural-parity-exchange transitions, which is compatible with zero within experimental uncertainties. The results provide important input for modelling Generalised Parton Distributions (GPDs). In particular, they may allow one to evaluate in a model-dependent way the role of parton helicity-flip GPDs in exclusive $\rho ^0$ production.

5. Rapid proliferation due to better metabolic adaptation results in full virulence of a filament-deficient Candida albicans strain.

Abstract

The ability of the fungal pathogen Candida albicans to undergo a yeast-to-hypha transition is believed to be a key virulence factor, as filaments mediate tissue damage. Here, we show that virulence is not necessarily reduced in filament-deficient strains, and the results depend on the infection model used. We generate a filament-deficient strain by deletion or repression of EED1 (known to be required for maintenance of hyphal growth). Consistent with previous studies, the strain is attenuated in damaging epithelial cells and macrophages in vitro and in a mouse model of intraperitoneal infection. However, in a mouse model of systemic infection, the strain is as virulent as the wild type when mice are challenged with intermediate infectious doses, and even more virulent when using low infectious doses. Retained virulence is associated with rapid yeast proliferation, likely the result of metabolic adaptation and improved fitness, leading to high organ fungal loads. Analyses of cytokine responses in vitro and in vivo, as well as systemic infections in immunosuppressed mice, suggest that differences in immunopathology contribute to some extent to retained virulence of the filament-deficient mutant. Our findings challenge the long-standing hypothesis that hyphae are essential for pathogenesis of systemic candidiasis by C. albicans.

Abstract

The convergence of quantum cryptography with applications used in everyday life is a topic drawing attention from the industrial and academic worlds. The development of quantum electronics has led to the practical achievement of quantum devices that are already available on the market and waiting for their first application on a broader scale. A major aspect of quantum cryptography is the methodology of Quantum Key Distribution (QKD), which is used to generate and distribute symmetric cryptographic keys between two geographically separate users using the principles of quantum physics. In previous years, several successful QKD networks have been created to test the implementation and interoperability of different practical solutions. This article surveys previously applied methods, showing techniques for deploying QKD networks and current challenges of QKD networking. Unlike studies focusing on optical channels and optical equipment, this survey focuses on the network aspect by considering network organization, routing and signaling protocols, simulation techniques, and a software-defined QKD networking approach.

Abstract

To the Editor: Since the ACTG076 trial results were published in 1994 [1], antiretroviral prophylaxis for the neonate as well as during pregnancy and delivery has been the cornerstone of prevention of mother-to-child transmission (MTCT) of HIV. In the second decade of the combination antiretroviral therapy (cART) era, around 90% of pregnant HIV-infected women in Western Europe receive antenatal cART, for their own health and/or for prevention of MTCT (PMTCT) [2-4]. The rationale for including neonatal prophylaxis in the ACTG076 trial included uncertainty regarding timing of MTCT and the desire to boost the infant’s in utero and intrapartum antiretroviral drug exposure with 6 weeks zidovudine prophylaxis, as a post-exposure prophylaxis (PEP) for newborns not infected with HIV in utero. Observational studies and trials subsequently demonstrated effectiveness of neonatal PEP for infants whose mothers received no antiretroviral drugs [5-7]. No trial data exist comparing the efficacy of different neonatal prophylaxis regimens for infants of women on cART. We investigated trends in neonatal prophylaxis use in the cART era in Western European sites of the European Collaborative Study, a cohort of HIV-infected pregnant women and their children; full methods are described elsewhere [4]. Abstract

In the classical theory of diffusion limited growth, it is assumed that the concentration field of solution is described by the standard diffusion equation. It means that particles of the solution undergo a random walk described by the Wiener process. In turn, it means that the velocity of particles is a stochastic process being Gaussian white noise. In consequence, the velocity–velocity correlation function is the Dirac -function and velocity correlation time is zero. In many cases such modeling is insufficient and one should consider models in which velocity is correlated in space and/or time. The question is whether correlations of velocity can change the kinetics of growth, in particular, whether the long-time asymptotics of the growth kinetics displays the power-law time dependence with the classical exponent 1/2. How to model such processes is a subject of this paper.

Abstract

Kinetics of three-dimensional normal grain growth and related processes (e.g., soap froth evolutions) described by the Mulheran–Harding model is studied. The model is represented by a diffusion equation with the grain–size–dependent diffusion coefficient. The equation is solved for an arbitrary initial distribution of grain sizes. It is proved that asymptotic kinetics do not depend on the initial state.

Abstract

A novel phenomenological approach to the microdomain structure formation or phase transformation in two-dimensional cooperative systems is proposed. The theory offered states that a new structure consists of pieces of islands, microdomains, germs, etc. and deals with modeling of the pattern formation process with increase of area of a new structure or phase. The kinetics of the process is studied. Probabilistic characteristics are obtained and first three moments of the process are analyzed.

Abstract

Previous studies on ion exchange of dental ceramics have shown that the biaxial flexural strength can be improved by exchanging potassium for sodium ions at temperatures below the strain point. The rubidium ion is bigger than the potassium ion and can also be considered as a candidate for replacing smaller ions, i.e., sodium or potassium, although it has not been used for dental ceramics. The double-step method uses the exchange of a small ion for a large ion (Li for Na) above the strain point, and the further exchange of a large ion for a small ion (K for Li) below the strain point. The purpose of this study was to compare the effect of rubidium-for-potassium ion exchange with that of potassium-for-sodium exchange (Tuf-Coat, G-C International Corp., Japan) on the flexural strength of a feldspathic dental porcelain and to test the hypothesis that a double-step ion exchange can lead to greater strengthening than potassium ion exchange alone. Weight measurements were performed before and after treatment. Qualitative chemical analyses allowed the rubidium, potassium, and sodium concentration profiles to be determined along cross-sections of the specimens. The maximumbiaxial stresses were calculated after specimens were fractured in water on a ball-on-ring fixture at 0.5 mm/min. Relative to the untreated control group, the flexural strength of the potassium-exchanged groups was significantly increased, except for those treated at 400 or 500°C. All the groups treated with RbNO3 exhibited a significant increase in flexural strength, with a maximum for the group treated at 450°C. The group submitted to a double-step exchange showed a statistically significant increase in the mean flexural strength compared with the group treated with Tuf-Coat at 450°C. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

This paper experimentally implements the nonlinear multirate model-algorithmic controller to regulate the reactor temperature, which is measured at a fast sampling rate, and the number-average molecular weight of the polymer, which is measured at an extremely slow sampling rate. A detailed model of the continuous free-radical methyl methacrylate polymerization reactor was developed from first principles to construct the multirate controller algorithm. The performance of the controller was examined by varying the tunable controller parameters, where it was shown that the controller can adequately track step changes in the output set points under active input constraints. Decreasing the tunable controller parameters deteriorated the control of the number-average molecular weight but improved the control of the temperature. Overall, the nonlinear multirate controller was an efficient and effective method to deal with the difficult problem of multirate output measurements.

Abstract

This paper develops a systematic methodology for the synthesis of nonlinear multirate model-algorithmic controllers for multivariable nonlinear systems. The control structure incorporates all available process measurements and forces each output to follow a prespecified reference trajectory regardless of the sampling period. The proposed multirate controller is a time-varying periodic system, which has properties that enable a rigorous stability analysis. Sufficient conditions for asymptotic stability of the closed-loop system are established.

Abstract

An analytical approach to the d-dimensional grain growth, which is a kind of the heterogeneous nucleation-and-growth phase transformation, is offered. The system is assumed to be driven by capillary forces. Another important operative assumption is that the system evolves under preservation of its hypervolume, which results in considering the process as a random walk in the space of grain sizes. A role of the initial condition imposed on the system behaviour, and how does the system behave upon a prescribed initial state, have been examined. A general conclusion appears, which states that this prescription does not affect the asymptotic system behavior, but may be of importance when inspecting the early-time domain more carefully, cf. the Weibull-type initial distribution. This study is addressed to some analogous theoretical descriptions concerning polycrystals as well as bubbles-containing systems. Abstract

Food production is one of the most important sources of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, both in primary production and in processing and the logistics chain. The most problematic and risky is the optimization of environmental effects in the stage of primary production. This is due to the significant influence of factors related to climate and soil that are difficult to predict. The scientific literature offers much information on the impact of crop residue management, but the context for assessing the impact of crop residue management in corn production on the carbon footprint is still unclear. The effectiveness of using organic additives like biochar, compost, corn, or straw to maintain soil productivity is well acknowledged. Information about the effects of particular crop residue management strategies on soil carbon sequestration, soil quality, and crop yield in corn cultivation is currently scarce. The research aimed to assess the potential for optimizing corn production through modifications in crop residue management, with a focus on the efficiency indicator being the level of greenhouse gas emissions per functional unit of the product. A 3-year growing experiment was conducted to investigate the impact of different corn crop residue management strategies. The modifications of the corn cultivation technology in terms of the crop residue management strategy had a significant impact on the yield of plants and the amount of GHG emissions. The conversion of corn straw to biochar and its introduction into the soil reduced the GHG emissions from corn cultivation per functional unit, despite the energy expenditure related to straw transport and biochar production. From a 3-year time perspective, a beneficial effect of biochar addition on the size of the commercial yield of plants was observed. In variants with biochar and a reduced level of nitrogen fertilization, no reduction in yields was observed. Abstract

New results are presented on a high-statistics measurement of Collins and Sivers asymmetries of charged hadrons produced in deep inelastic scattering of muons on a transversely polarized ^{6}LiD target. The data were taken in 2022 with the COMPASS spectrometer using the 160 GeV muon beam at CERN, statistically balancing the existing data on transversely polarized proton targets. The first results from about two-thirds of the new data have total uncertainties smaller by up to a factor of three compared to the previous deuteron measurements. Using all the COMPASS proton and deuteron results, both the transversity and the Sivers distribution functions of the u and d quark, as well as the tensor charge in the measured x range are extracted. In particular, the accuracy of the d quark results is significantly improved.
