Abstract

The threat posed by invasive non-native species worldwide requires a global approach to identify which introduced species are likely to pose an elevated risk of impact to native species and ecosystems. To inform policy, stakeholders and management decisions on global threats to aquatic ecosystems, 195 assessors representing 120 risk assessment areas across all six inhabited continents screened 819 non-native species from 15 groups of aquatic organisms (freshwater, brackish, marine plants and animals) using the Aquatic Species Invasiveness Screening Kit. This multi-lingual decision-support tool for the risk screening of aquatic organisms provides assessors with risk scores for a species under current and future climate change conditions that, following a statistically based calibration, permits the accurate classification of species into high-, medium- and low-risk categories under current and predicted climate conditions. The 1730 screenings undertaken encompassed wide geographical areas (regions, political entities, parts thereof, water bodies, river basins, lake drainage basins, and marine regions), which permitted thresholds to be identified for almost all aquatic organismal groups screened as well as for tropical, temperate and continental climate classes, and for tropical and temperate marine ecoregions. In total, 33 species were identified as posing a ‘very high risk’ of being or becoming invasive, and the scores of several of these species under current climate increased under future climate conditions, primarily due to their wide thermal tolerances. The risk thresholds determined for taxonomic groups and climate zones provide a basis against which area-specific or climate-based calibrated thresholds may be interpreted. Abstract

The ide Leuciscus idus is a large-bodied cyprinid native to freshwaters around the Baltic, Black, Caspian, White, Barents, Kara, Laptev and North seas as well as the Aral Sea region. Historically an important commercial species, the ide is used in recreational fisheries and as an ornamental fish, and is subject to translocation and stocking events. The ide is less well-studied than many European cyprinids and relatively little is known of the risks it poses to native species and ecosystems where introduced. The present review and meta-analysis examine available data on the ide's environmental biology to provide an assessment of its potential invasiveness. A long-lived, omnivorous species, the ide is a habitat generalist that inhabits lowland rivers and nutrient-rich lakes, but also some brackish waters where it is facultatively anadromous. The ide displays variable age and length at maturity and asymptotic growth in body length, can be highly productive and migratory, and can withstand variable environmental conditions. Despite several attributes that should facilitate acclimation to novel environments, the ide has established relatively few self-sustaining populations outside its native range, and is therefore not currently considered to be invasive. 9. Multiple impacts of ocean acidification on calcifying marine invertebrates

Abstract

Increasing anthropogenic atmospheric CO₂ is altering the chemistry of surface seawater worldwide, resulting in ocean acidification. Experiments have begun to demonstrate the detrimental consequences that a CO₂-mediated decline in ocean pH can have on the growth and survival of calcifying organisms. However, significant knowledge gaps exist both in our understanding of the mechanisms driving the observed reductions in shell growth rates of organisms exposed to increases in CO₂, and in our ability to predict how these individual-level effects could scale-up to the population or community-level. Using laboratory exposure experiments in which levels of dissolved CO₂ were carefully manipulated, we tested the effects of climatically relevant increases in CO₂ levels on a) both shell deposition rate and shell dissolution rate in the intertidal snail, Nucella lamellosa, and b) the growth and feeding behaviour of juvenile red sea urchins, Strongylocentrotus franciscanus. Based on the results of the former study, we found that shell weight gain per day in live snails decreased linearly with increasing CO₂ level while shell weight loss per day in empty shells more than doubled over this same range. These results suggest that for some species, elevated CO₂ levels may have a much greater effect on shell dissolution than shell deposition. In the latter study, although we found no effect of a doubling of current CO₂ concentration on the individual feeding rates or absorption efficiency of juvenile urchins, there was a significant reduction in relative growth rates at the higher CO₂ concentration after 4 months of exposure. Applying the urchin growth data to a simple demographic matrix model, and incorporating empirical relationships between urchin test diameter, biomass and kelp consumption rates to the model outputs, we estimated that if current CO₂ levels were to double by the end of the century, it would take significantly longer for urchins to reach reproductive and harvestable sizes, and their per capita kelp grazing rates would be significantly reduced. These simple model applications illustrate how CO₂-mediated reductions in individual growth rates could indirectly impact important population-level attributes such as time to first reproduction, and could have community- or ecosystem-level effects by moderating the importance of top-down biological control.

Abstract

As CO2 levels increase in the atmosphere, so too do they in the sea. Although direct effects of moderately elevated CO2 in sea water may be of little consequence, indirect effects may be profound. For example, lowered pH and calcium carbonate saturation states may influence both deposition and dissolution rates of mineralized skeletons in many marine organisms. The relative impact of elevated CO2 on deposition and dissolution rates are not known for many large-bodied organisms. We therefore tested the effects of increased CO2 levels--those forecast to occur in roughly 100 and 200 years--on both shell deposition rate and shell dissolution rate in a rocky intertidal snail, Nucella lamellosa. Shell weight gain per day in live snails decreased linearly with increasing CO2 levels. However, this trend was paralleled by shell weight loss per day in empty shells, suggesting that these declines in shell weight gain observed in live snails were due to increased dissolution of existing shell material, rather than reduced production of new shell material. Ocean acidification may therefore have a greater effect on shell dissolution than on shell deposition, at least in temperate marine molluscs. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
