1. Synchronization of Small-scale Magnetic Features, Blinkers, and Coronal Bright Points

Abstract

We investigate the relationship between different transients such as blinkers detected in images taken at 304~{\AA}, extreme ultraviolet coronal bright points (ECBPs) at 193~{\AA}, X-ray coronal bright points (XCBPs) at 94~{\AA} on AIA, and magnetic features observed by HMI during ten years of solar cycle 24. An automatic identification method is applied to detect transients, and the YAFTA algorithm is used to extract the magnetic features. Using ten years of data, we detect in total 7,483,827 blinkers, 2,082,162 ECBPs, and 1,188,839 XCBPs, respectively, with their birthrate of about $1.1\times10^{-18}$ ${\rm m}^{-2}{\rm s}^{-1}$, $3.8\times10^{-19}$ ${\rm m}^{-2}{\rm s}^{-1}$, and $1.5\times10^{-19}$ ${\rm m}^{-2}{\rm s}^{-1}$. We find that about 80\% of blinkers are observed at the boundaries of supergranules, and 57\% (34\%) are associated with ECBPs (XCBPs). We further find that about 61{--}80\% of transients are associated with the isolated magnetic poles in the quiet Sun and that \textbf{the normalized maximum intensities of the transients are correlated with photospheric magnetic flux of poles} via a power law. These results conspicuously show that these transients have a magnetic origin and their synchronized behavior provides further clues towards the understanding of the coupling among the different layers of the solar atmosphere. Our study further reveals that the appearance of these transients is strongly anti-correlated with the sunspots cycle. This finding can be relevant for a better understanding of solar dynamo and magnetic structures at different scales during the solar cycle.

Abstract

A mission to view the solar poles from high helio-latitudes (above 60$^\circ$) will build on the experience of Solar Orbiter as well as a long heritage of successful solar missions and instrumentation (e.g. SOHO \cite{SOHO}, STEREO \cite{stereo}, Hinode \cite{Hinode}, SDO \cite{SDO}), but will focus for the first time on the solar poles, enabling scientific investigations that cannot be done by any other mission. One of the major mysteries of the Sun is the solar cycle. The activity cycle of the Sun drives the structure and behaviour of the heliosphere and is, of course, the driver of space weather. In addition, solar activity and variability provides fluctuating input into the Earth climate models, and these same physical processes are applicable to stellar systems hosting exoplanets. One of the main obstructions to understanding the solar cycle, and hence all solar activity, is our current lack of understanding of the polar regions. In this White Paper, submitted to the European Space Agency in response to the Voyage 2050 call, we describe a mission concept that aims to address this fundamental issue. In parallel, we recognise that viewing the Sun from above the polar regions enables further scientific advantages, beyond those related to the solar cycle, such as unique and powerful studies of coronal mass ejection processes, from a global perspective, and studies of coronal structure and activity in polar regions. Abstract

In weakly collisional space plasmas, the turbulent cascade provides most of the energy that is dissipated at small scales by various kinetic processes. Understanding the characteristics of such dissipative mechanisms requires the accurate knowledge of the fluctuations that make energy available for conversion at small scales, as different dissipation processes are triggered by fluctuations of a different nature. The scaling properties of different energy channels are estimated here using a proxy of the local energy transfer, based on the third-order moment scaling law for magnetohydrodynamic turbulence. In particular, the sign-singularity analysis was used to explore the scaling properties of the alternating positive-negative energy fluxes, thus providing information on the structure and topology of such fluxes for each of the different type of fluctuations. The results show the highly complex geometrical nature of the flux, and that the local contributions associated with energy and cross-helicity nonlinear transfer have similar scaling properties. Consequently, the fractal properties of current and vorticity structures are similar to those of the Alfv\'enic fluctuations.

Abstract

Synthetic turbulence models are a useful tool that provide realistic representations of turbulence, necessary to test theoretical results, to serve as background fields in some numerical simulations, and to test analysis tools. Models of 1D and 3D synthetic turbulence previously developed still required large computational resources. A new wavelet-based model of synthetic turbulence, able to produce a field with tunable spectral law, intermittency and anisotropy, is presented here. The rapid algorithm introduced, based on the classic $p$-model of intermittent turbulence, allows to reach a broad spectral range using a modest computational effort. The model has been tested against the standard diagnostics for intermittent turbulence, i.e. the spectral analysis, the scale-dependent statistics of the field increments, and the multifractal analysis, all showing an excellent response., Comment: in press on PRE

Abstract

Using the magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) description, we develop a nonlinear dynamo model that couples the evolution of the large scale magnetic field with turbulent dynamics of the plasma at small scale by electromotive force (e.m.f.) in the induction equation at large scale. The nonlinear behavior of the plasma at small scale is described by using a MHD shell model for velocity field and magnetic field fluctuations.The shell model allow to study this problem in a large parameter regime which characterizes the dynamo phenomenon in many natural systems and which is beyond the power of supercomputers at today. Under specific conditions of the plasma turbulent state, the field fluctuations at small scales are able to trigger the dynamo instability. We study this transition considering the stability curve which shows a strong decrease in the critical magnetic Reynolds number for increasing inverse magnetic Prandlt number $\textrm{Pm}^{-1}$ in the range $[10^{-6},1]$ and slows an increase in the range $[1,10^{8}]$. We also obtain hysteretic behavior across the dynamo boundary reveling the subcritical nature of this transition. The system, undergoing this transition, can reach different dynamo regimes, depending on Reynolds numbers of the plasma flow. This shows the critical role that the turbulence plays in the dynamo phenomenon. In particular the model is able to reproduce the dynamical situation in which the large-scale magnetic field jumps between two states which represent the opposite polarities of the magnetic field, reproducing the magnetic reversals as observed in geomagnetic dynamo and in the VKS experiments., Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures

Abstract

The description of the relationship between interplanetary plasma and geomagnetic activity requires complex models. Drastically reducing the ambition of describing this detailed complex interaction, and if we are interested only in the fractality properties of the time-series of its characteristic parameters, a magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) shell model forced using solar wind data, might provide a possible novel approach. In this paper we study the relation between the activity of the magnetic energy dissipation rate obtained in one such model, which may describe geomagnetic activity, and the fractal dimension of the forcing. In different shell model simulations, the forcing is provided by the solution of a Langevin equation where a white noise is implemented. Since this forcing has shown its unsuitableness in describing the driver due to solar wind action, we propose to consider the fluctuations of the product between the velocity and the magnetic field solar wind data as the noise in Langevin equation, whose solution provides the forcing in the magnetic field equation. We compare the fractal dimension of the magnetic energy dissipation rate obtained, of the magnetic forcing term, and of the fluctuations ofv · bz, with the activity of the magnetic energy dissipation rate. We examine the dependence of these fractal dimensions on the solar cycle. We show that all measures of activity have a peak near solar maximum. Moreover, both the fractal dimension computed for the fluctuations ofv · bz time series and the fractal dimension of the magnetic forcing have a minimum near solar maximum. This suggests that the complexity of the noise term in the Langevin equation may have a strong effect in the activity of the magnetic energy dissipation rate. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
