High Energy Physics - Experiment - Abstract
Three independent searches for an electric dipole moment (EDM) of the positive and negative muons have been performed, using spin precession data from the muon g-2 storage ring at Brookhaven National Laboratory. Details on the experimental apparatus and the three analyses are presented. Since the individual results on the positive and negative muon, as well as the combined result, d=-0.1(0.9)E-19 e-cm, are all consistent with zero, we set a new muon EDM limit, |d| < 1.9E-19 e-cm (95% C.L.). This represents a factor of 5 improvement over the previous best limit on the muon EDM., Comment: 19 pages, 15 figures, 7 tables

Physics - Accelerator Physics - Abstract
In the past decade, the bunch lengths of electrons in accelerators have decreased dramatically to the range of a few picoseconds \cite{Uesaka94,Trotz97}. Measurement of the length as well as the longitudinal profile of these short bunches have been a topic of research in a number of institutions \cite{Uesaka97,Liu97,Hutchins00}. One of the techniques uses the electric field induced by the passage of electrons in the vicinity of a birefringent crystal to change its optical characteristics. Well-established electro-optic techniques can then be used to measure the temporal characteristics of the electron bunch. In this paper we present a novel, non-invasive, single-shot approach to improve the resolution to tens of femtoseconds so that sub-millimeter bunch length can be measured., Comment: 3 pages, 1 figure. High Energy Physics - Experiment - Abstract
We have made an observation of 45 MeV electron beam bunches using the nondestructive electro-optical (EO) technique. The amplitude of the EO modulation was found to increase linearly with electron beam charge and decrease inversely with the optical beam path distance from the electron beam. The risetime of the signal was bandwidth limited by our detection system to \~70ps. An EO signal due to ionization caused by the electrons traversing the EO crystal was also observed. The EO technique may be ideal for the measurement of bunch structure with femtosecond resolution of relativistic charged particle beam bunches., Comment: 3 Pages, 1 figure. The risetime of the temporal signal was limited by our detection system to ~70ps. The EO signal due to ionization caused by the electrons traversing the EO crystal was also observed. It has a distinctively long decay time constant and signal polarity opposite to that due to the field induced by the electron beam. High Energy Physics - Experiment - Abstract
We have made the first observation of a charged particle beam by means of its electro-optical effect on the polarization of laser light in a LiNbO3 crystal. The modulation of the laser light during the passage of a pulsed electron beam was observed using a fast photodiode and a digital oscilloscope. The fastest rise time measured, 120 ps, was obtained in the single shot mode and was limited by the bandwidth of the oscilloscope and the associated electronics. This technology holds promise for detectors of greatly improved spatial and temporal resolution for single relativistic charged particles as well as particle beams., Comment: 7 pages, 2 figures. The 8.4 Tesla, 10 m long transverse magnetic field of a twin aperture LHC bending magnet can be utilized as a macroscopic coherent solar axion-to-photon converter. Numerical calculations show that the integrated time of alignment with the Sun would be 33 days per year with the magnet on a tracking table capable of $\pm 5^o$ in the vertical direction and $\pm 40^o$ in the horizontal direction. The existing lower bound on the axion-to-photon coupling constant can be improved by a factor between 50 and 100 in 3 years, i.e., $g_{a\gamma\gamma} \lesssim 9\cdot 10^{-11} GeV^{-1}$ for axion masses $\lesssim$ 1 eV. This value falls within the existing open axion mass window. The same set-up can simultaneously search for low- and high-energy celestial axions, or axion-like particles, scanning the sky as the Earth rotates and orbits the Sun., Comment: Final version, accepted for publication in Nucl. The Cryogenic Underground Observatory for Rare Events (CUORE) is the first cryogenic experiment searching for neutrinoless double-beta (0vßß) decay that has been able to reach the one-ton scale. The detector, located at the Laboratori Nazionali del Gran Sasso in Italy, consists of an array of 988 TeO2 crystals arranged in a compact cylindrical structure of 19 towers. Following the completion of the detector construction in August 2016, CUORE began its first physics data run in 2017 at a base temperature of about 10 mK. Following multiple optimization campaigns in 2018, CUORE is currently in stable operating mode. In 2019, CUORE released its 2nd result of the search for 0vßß with a TeO2 exposure of 372.5 kg·yr and a median exclusion sensitivity to a 130Te 0vßß decay half-life of 1.7 · 1025 yr. We find no evidence for 0vßß decay and set a 90% C.I. (credibility interval) Bayesian lower limit of 3.2 · 1025 yr on the 130Te 0vßß decay half-life. In this work, we present the current status of CUORE's search for 0vßß, as well as review the detector performance. Finally, we give an update of the CUORE background model and the measurement of the 130Te two neutrino double-beta (2vßß) decay half-life.

- Abstract
AIM: Ubiquitin-Proteasome System (UPS) is of paramount importance regarding the function of the myocardial cell. Consistently, inhibition of this system has been found to affect myocardium in experimental models; yet, the clinical impact of UPS inhibition on cardiac function has not been comprehensively examined. Our aim was to gain insight into the effect of proteasome inhibition on myocardial mechanics in humans. METHODS AND RESULTS: We prospectively evaluated 48 patients with multiple myeloma and an indication to receive carfilzomib, an irreversible proteasome inhibitor. All patients were initially evaluated and underwent echocardiography with speckle tracking analysis. Carfilzomib was administered according to Kd treatment protocol. Follow-up echocardiography was performed at the 3rd and 6th month. Proteasome activity (PrA) was measured in peripheral blood mononuclear cells. At 3 months after treatment, we observed early left ventricular (LV) segmental dysfunction and deterioration of left atrial (LA) remodelling, which was sustained and more pronounced than that observed in a cardiotoxicity control group. At 6 months, LV and right ventricular functions were additionally attenuated (P < 0.05 for all). These changes were independent of blood pressure, endothelial function, inflammation, and cardiac injury levels. Changes in PrA were associated with changes in global longitudinal strain (GLS), segmental LV strain, and LA markers (P < 0.05 for all). Finally, baseline GLS < -18% or LA strain rate > 1.71 were associated with null hypertension events. CONCLUSION: Inhibition of the UPS induced global deterioration of cardiac function. © The Author(s) 2022. Published by Oxford University Press on behalf of the European Society of Cardiology. - Abstract
Anatomical variations of the cystic artery are frequently documented, but variations of the artery to the cystic duct are extremely uncommon. We report a rare duplication of the artery to the cystic duct, revealed during laparoscopic cholecystectomy on an 18-year-old Caucasian female treated for gallstone disease. Both arterial branches were meticulously and carefully retracted and cauterized to avoid bleeding and subsequent postoperative complications. To our knowledge, this is the first reported case of an artery to the cystic duct duplication. The presence of congenital variations of the artery to the cystic duct encumbers surgical maneuvers and increases the potentiality of intraoperative injury and hemorrhage. © 2022, Oman Medical Specialty Board. Resistive micromegas is proposed as an active element for sampling calorimetry. Future linear collider experiments or the HL-LHC experiments can profit from those developments for Particle Flow Calorimetry. Micromegas possesses remarkable properties concerning gain stability, reduced ion feedback, response linearity, adaptable sensitive element granularity, fast response and high rate capability. Recent developments on Micromegas with a protective resistive layer present excellent results, resolving the problem of discharges caused by local high charge deposition, thanks to its RC-slowed charge evacuation. Higher resistivity though, may cause loss of the response linearity at high rates. We have scanned a wide range of resistivities and performed laboratory tests with X-rays that demonstrate excellent response linearity up to rates of (a few) times 10MHz/cm2, with simultaneous mitigation of discharges. Beam test studies at SPS/CERN with hadrons have also shown a remarkable stability of the resistive Micromegas and low currents for rates up to 15MHz/cm2. We present results from the aforementioned studies confronted with MC simulation

AIMS Our aim was to report on a survey initiated by the European Association of Percutaneous Cardiovascular Interventions (EAPCI) collecting the opinion of the cardiology community on the invasive management of acute coronary syndrome (ACS), before and after the MATRIX trial presentation at the American College of Cardiology (ACC) 2015 Scientific Sessions. METHODS AND RESULTS A web-based survey was distributed to all individuals registered on the EuroIntervention mailing list (n=15,200). A total of 572 and 763 physicians responded to the pre- and post-ACC survey, respectively. The radial approach emerged as the preferable access site for ACS patients undergoing invasive management with roughly every other responder interpreting the evidence for mortality benefit as definitive and calling for a guidelines upgrade to class I. The most frequently preferred anticoagulant in ACS patients remains unfractionated heparin (UFH), due to higher costs and greater perceived thrombotic risks associated with bivalirudin. However, more than a quarter of participants declared the use of bivalirudin would increase after MATRIX. CONCLUSIONS The MATRIX trial reinforced the evidence for a causal association between bleeding and mortality and triggered consensus on the superiority of the radial versus femoral approach. The belief that bivalirudin mitigates bleeding risk is common, but UFH still remains the preferred anticoagulant based on lower costs and thrombotic risks.

The muon anomalous magnetic moment measurement, when compared with theory, can be used to test many extensions to the standard model. The most recent measurement made by the Brookhaven E821 Collaboration reduces the uncertainty on the world average of a_mu to 0.7 ppm, comparable in precision to theory. This paper describes the experiment and the current theoretical efforts to establish a correct standard model reference value for the muon anomaly., Plenary Talk; PANIC'02 XVI Particles and Nuclear International Conference, Osaka, Japan; Sept. 30 - Oct. 4, 2002; Report describes the published 0.7 ppm result and updates the theory status

- Abstract
Aims: Our aim was to report on a survey initiated by the European Association of Percutaneous Cardiovascular Interventions (EAPCI) concerning opinion on the evidence relating to dual antiplatelet therapy (DAPT) duration after coronary stenting. Methods and results: Results from three randomised clinical trials were scheduled to be presented at the American Heart Association Scientific Sessions 2014 (AHA 2014). A web-based survey was distributed to all individuals registered in the EuroIntervention mailing list (n=15,200) both before and after AHA 2014. A total of 1,134 physicians responded to the first (i.e., before AHA 2014) and 542 to the second (i.e., after AHA 2014) survey. The majority of respondents interpreted trial results consistent with a substantial equipoise regarding the benefits and risks of an extended versus a standard DAPT strategy. Two respondents out of ten believed extended DAPT should be implemented in selected patients. After AHA 2014, 46.1% of participants expressed uncertainty about the available evidence on DAPT duration, and 40.0% the need for clinical guidance. Conclusions: This EAPCI survey highlights considerable uncertainty within the medical community with regard to the optimal duration of DAPT after coronary stenting in the light of recent reported trial results. Updated recommendations for practising physicians to guide treatment decisions in routine clinical practice should be provided by international societies.

In the muon (g - 2) experiment at Brookhaven National Laboratory, the spin precession frequency omega(a) is obtained from a standard chi(2) minimization fit applied to the time distribution of decay electrons. The unusually high accuracy (similar to 0.5 ppm) of the experiment puts stringent requirements on the quality of the fit and the level of understanding of the statistical properties of the fitted parameters. We discuss the properties of the fits and their implications on the derived value for omega(a), including estimates of the effect of an imperfect fit function, methods of including additional external information to reduce the error, the effects of splitting the data into many smaller subsets of data, applying different weighting methods to the data using energy information, and various tests of data suitability. Background: Only limited data exist regarding the long-term efficacy of beta-brachytherapy (beta-VBT) in routine clinical practice and the impact of the prolonged (> 6 months) combined antiplatelet therapy after beta-VBT. Our aim is to examine the long-term clinical efficacy of routine beta brachytherapy (beta-VBT) followed by indefinite administration of combined antiplatelet therapy in patients at high restenotic risk. Methods: Sixty-one patients with 65 lesions [de novo: 41, in-stent restenotic (ISR): 24] underwent intracoronary beta-VBT and were followed prospectively. All patients received indefinite administration of aspirin and clopidogrel, underwent routine angiography 6 months later and were followed-up clinically for 43.7 months (range: 32 to 52 months). Results: Acute success was achieved in 60/61 (98.4%) patients. Lesion length was 36.1 (+/- 17.6) mm for the de novo and 22.0 (+/- 9.8) mm for the ISR (p=0.001). Stems were implanted in 35/41 de novo and 7/24 ISR lesions (p < 0.01). Six-month binary restenosis after successful beta-VBT was 35.9% (23/64). During follow-up patients with de-novo lesions who received a new stent during index procedure had a higher incidence of major cardiac events than patients with ISR lesions without a new stent (log rank test, p=0.02). Acute and late thrombotic events were reported at 6 patients, all with de novo lesions and stent implantation. Conclusions: Beta-VBT plus stenting in de novo lesions is related to an unacceptable high rate of thrombotic complications and clinical restenosis despite prolonged administration of combined antiplatelet therapy. Brachytherapy remains a reasonable option for patients with ISR lesions until full data from large randomized trials comparing drug eluting stents with brachytherapy are available. BACKGROUND: We have previously reported significant benefits of using enoxaparin, compared to tinzaparin, in the 7- and 30-day incidence of the composite triple end point of death, myocardial infarction (MI), or recurrent angina in patients with non-ST-segment elevation acute coronary syndromes (NSTACS). In the present study, we aimed to determine whether the observed benefits of enoxaparin were maintained beyond the early phase and report the results of the 6-m follow-up of patients in the EVET study. METHODS: We recruited 438 patients with NSTACS. All patients received oral aspirin and were randomized to also receive enoxaparin, 100 IU/kg subcutaneously twice daily (equivalent to 1 mg/kg twice daily; n = 220), or tinzaparin, 175 IU/kg subcutaneously once daily (n = 218), for up to 7 days. RESULTS: At 6 m, the incidence of the composite triple end point of death, MI, or recurrent angina was lower among patients receiving enoxaparin compared to those receiving tinzaparin (25.5% vs 44.0%, P < .001). A lower incidence of the secondary composite end point of death or MI was also found in the enoxaparin group compared to tinzaparin group (2.7% vs 6.9%, P = .046). The need for revascularization procedures was also lower in the enoxaparin group compared to tinzaparin group (23.2% vs 37.2%, P = .002). CONCLUSIONS: In patients with NSTACS, enoxaparin significantly reduced the rates of recurrent ischemic events and therapeutic procedures in the short term, with sustained benefit at 6 m compared to tinzaparin. - Abstract
Angiogenesis, tumor cell proliferation, and migration are the hallmarks of solid tumors, such as gliomas. This study demonstrates that a fragment derived from the autocatalytic digestion of matrix metalloproteinase (MMP)-2, called PEX, acts simultaneously as an inhibitor of glioma angiogenesis, cell proliferation, and migration. PEX is detected in the cultured medium of various human glioma, endothelial, breast, and prostate carcinoma cell lines. PEX is purified from the medium of glioma cell lines by chromatography, where PEX is constitutively expressed as a free and a TIMP-2-bound form. In human glioma tissue, PEX expression correlates with histological subtype and grade and with alpha v beta 3 integrin expression to which it is bound. Systemic administration of PEX to s.c. and intracranial human glioma xenografts results in a 99% suppression of tumor growth with no signs of toxicity. Thus, PEX is a very promising candidate for the treatment of human malignant gliomas
