In order to enhance the efficiency of heavy metal ion extraction from aqueous medium, new nanocomposite magnetic sorbents were synthesized on the base of natural zeolite (Zt) and nanoparticles of ZnFe2O4 (F). The composition, structure and physical–chemical properties of new composites with 2% (Zt-2F), 8% (Zt-8F) and 16% (Zt-16F) of zinc ferrite were characterized by XRD, BET adsorption–desorption of nitrogen, SEM with elemental mapping, TEM and magnetometry. The sorption capacity of materials was assessed towards Cu2+ ions in aqueous solutions, for which kinetic and equilibrium features of sorption were established. The maximal sorption capacity (amax, mg/g) of the studied materials increased in the order: Zt (19.4) < Zt-2F (27.3) < Zt-8F (30.2) < Zt-16F (32.8) < ZnFe2O4 (161.3). The kinetics of the sorption process followed a pseudo-second order kinetic model. The sorption equilibrium at zinc ferrite was successfully described by the Langmuir model, while the Freundlich model better fitted the sorption equilibrium on zeolite and composites. The efficiency of Cu2+ ion extraction from 320 mg/dm3 aqueous solution was 63% for composite Zt-16F and 100% for a sample of ZnFe2O4. It was established that the proposed composite sorbents provide the operation of several cycles without regeneration, they can be easily recycled with 0.1 N HCl solution and are capable of magnetic separation. The advantages of new composites and the proposed method of synthesis allow recommending these materials as effective sorbents of heavy metals from wastewater.

The causes of the appearance of first-order magnetic phase transitions remain a mystery. FeRh alloy is a classical material where a first-order magnetic phase transition occurs. The authors of this article studied the phase transition from the antiferromagnetic state to the ferromagnetic state in FeRh alloy. Comparison of the magnetometry and transport properties results allowed us to determine a number of differences in the mechanisms of the phase evolution during magnetic field and temperature induced transition. This article notes the priority of the rearrangement of the micromagnetic structure of the ferromagnetic phase as a result of the induction of a phase transition by a magnetic field. The main feature of the magnetic field induced phase transition compared to the temperature induced one is the change in the micromagnetic structure of the ferromagnetic phase. The growth of a ferromagnetic phase with less scattering fields leads to asymmetric behavior when a phase transition is induced near the metastable state. We also focused on the importance of taking into account the effect of magnetostriction when analyzing the evolution of the phase transition, which leads to the irreversibility of the phase transition near a zero magnetic field.

The controllable delivery of drugs is a key task of pharmacology. For this purpose, a series of polymer composites was synthesized via the cross-linking of hyaluronate and a hyaluronate/polyacrylate mixture with Fe2O3 nanoparticles. The cross-linking imparts magnetic properties to the composites, which are more pronounced for the ternary hyaluronate/polyacrylate/γ-Fe2O3 composites compared with the binary hyaluronate/Fe2O3 composites. When dispersed in water, the composites produce microsized hydrogel particles. Circulation of the ternary microgels in an aqueous solution at a speed of 1.84 cm/s can be stopped using a permanent external magnet with a magnetic flux density of 400 T. The composite hydrogels can absorb the antitumor antibiotic doxorubicin (Dox); the resulting constructs show their cytotoxicity to tumor cells to be comparable to the cytotoxicity of Dox itself. The addition of the hyaluronidase enzyme induces degradation of the binary and ternary microgels down to smaller particles. This study presents prospectives for the preparation of magnetically controlled biodegradable polymer carriers for the encapsulation of bioactive substances.

In this work, an attempt was made to reveal and explain the influence of the process of formation of 2D nanostructures at the surface of an amorphous alloy (an alloy with the composition Co75Si15Fe5Cr4.5Al0.5 (in at.%) was used for this purpose) on the corrosion and magnetic properties of such an alloy. Two-dimensional nanostructures (nanocells of 100–150 nm in size, which were obtained by anodizing the initial sample in an ionic liquid) are essentially a pattern on the surface of the sample, and they cannot completely cover and block the surface from external effects. It was postulated that the presence of these nanostructures during corrosion and magnetic tests has no significant effect. However, a noticeable inhibition effect was observed during corrosion tests and a less noticeable (but still detectable) effect was observed during magnetic tests. The authors believe that the effect obtained, with a detailed study, can be used to increase the corrosion resistance and to improve the properties of traditional magnetic materials.

A hybrid electromagnetic nanomaterial, which is a matrix based on a conjugated polymer of poly-3-amine-7-methylamine-2-methylphenazine with dispersed magnetite nanoparticles immobilized on multi-walled carbon nanotubes, has been synthesized. In situ magnetometry was used to study the kinetics of the hydrogen reduction of Fe3O4 immobilized in the structure of a ternary nanocomposite in magnetic fields of different intensities. An increase in the magnetite reduction reaction rate with the formation of metallic iron nanoparticles at T=420∘C and at a magnetic field strength in the range of 60–3000 Oe was observed. The dependence of the degree of conversion of Fe3O4 on the magnetic field strength was established.

Iron-containing oxides are the most important functional substance class and find a tremendous variety of applications. An attractive modern application is their use in biomedical technologies as components in systems for imaging, drug delivery, magnetically mediated hyperthermia, etc. In this paper, we report the results of the experimental investigation of submicron Y3Fe5O12 garnet particles obtained in different sizes by solution combustion synthesis (SCS) using glycine organic fuel to discuss the interdependence of peculiarities of the crystal and magnetic structure and size’s influence on its functional magnetothermal performance. A complex study including Mössbauer and Raman spectroscopy accompanied by X-ray diffractometry, SEM, and measurements of field and temperature magnetic properties were performed. The influence of the size effects and perfectness of structure on the particle set magnetization was revealed. The ranges of different mechanisms of magnetothermal effect in the AC magnetic field were determined.

Cobalt ferrite nanoparticles of different stoichiometries synthesized by a sol–gel autocombustion method were used as a starting material to obtain high-moment Fe50Co50 and Fe66Co34 metal nanoparticles by topochemical hydrogen reduction. Structural and magnetic investigations confirmed the formation of FeCo nanoparticles with crystallite sizes of about 30 nm and magnetization at 0.5 T of ~265 Am2/kg (0 K), which was larger than the expected bulk value, likely because of the incorporation in the body-centered cubic (bcc) FeCo structure of the residual C atoms present on the surface of the oxide particles. Temperature-dependent magnetization measurements in the H2 atmosphere were also performed to investigate in detail the reduction mechanism and the effect of an external magnetic field on the process efficiency.

Magnetic oxides are promising materials for alternative health diagnoses and treatments. The aim of this work is to understand the dependence of the heating power with the nanoparticle (NP) mean size, for the manganite composition La0.75Sr0.25MnO3 (LSMO)—the one with maximum critical temperature for the whole La/Sr ratio of the series. We have prepared four different samples, each one annealed at different temperatures, in order to produce different mean NP sizes, ranging from 26 nm up to 106 nm. Magnetization measurements revealed a FC-ZFC irreversibility and from the coercive field as function of temperature we determined the blocking temperature. A phase diagram was delivered as a function of the NP mean size and, based on this, the heating mechanism understood. Small NPs (26 nm) is heated up within the paramagnetic range of temperature (T>Tc), and therefore provide low heating efficiency; while bigger NPs are heated up, from room temperature, within the magnetically blocked range of temperature (TT>TB), for intermediate mean diameter size of 37 nm, with maximum efficiency of heat transfer.

The relevance of work is caused by the necessity to produce industrially cobalt nanopowders with specified properties. The aim of the research: to obtain cobalt nanopowder by plasmachemical synthesis, sol-gel and infrared pyrolysis methods; to determine and to compare their characteristics. Research methods: the X-ray phase qualitative and quantitative analysis, the average size calculation of coherent-scattering region and coherent-scattering region distribution by the sizes, the transmission and scanning electronic microscopy, the electron diffraction analysis, the calculation of the average size of particles with software, the method of low-temperature nitrogen adsorption, the mass spectrometry, the vibration magnetometry. The results: The authors have studied phase qualitative and quantitative compositions, disperse characteristics, morphology, magnetic properties of cobalt nanopowders obtained by three methods and have determined dimensional dependences of coercive force. It was ascertained that the nanopowders have similar morphology, but various qualitative and quantitative compositions, disperse characteristics and magnetic properties. It is impossible to interchange these materials technologically.

The tunable magnetic properties of amorphous ferromagnetic glass-coated microwires make them suitable for a wide range of applications. Accurate knowledge of the micromagnetic structure is highly desirable since it affects almost all magnetic properties. To select an appropriate wire-sample for a specific application, a deeper understanding of the magnetization reversal process is required, because it determines the measurable response (such as induced voltage waveform and its spectrum). However, the experimental observation of micromagnetic structure of micro-scale amorphous objects has strict size limitations. In this work we proposed a novel experimental technique for evaluating the microstructural characteristics of glass-coated microwires. The cross-sectional permeability distribution in the sample was obtained from impedance measurements at different frequencies. This distribution enables estimation of the prevailing anisotropy in the local region of the wire cross-section. The results obtained were compared with the findings of magnetostatic measurements and remanent state analysis. The advantages and limitations of the methods were discussed.

We present the results of numerical simulation of magnetodielectric effect (MDE) in magnetorheological elastomers (MRE)—the change of effective permittivity of elastomer placed under the external magnetic field. The computer model of effect is based on an assumption about the displacement of magnetic particles inside the elastic matrix under the external magnetic field and the formation of chain-like structures. Such displacement of metallic particles between the planes of capacitor leads to the change of capacity, which can be considered as a change of effective permittivity of elastomer caused by magnetic field (magnetodielectric effect). In the literature, mainly the 2D approach is used to model similar effects. In this paper, we present a new approach of magnetorheological elastomers simulation—a 3D-model of the magnetodielectric effect with ability to simulate systems of 10 5 particles. Within the framework of the model, three types of particle size distributions were simulated, which gives an advantage over previously reported approaches. Lognormal size distribution was shown to give better qualitative match of the modeling and experimental results than monosized type. The developed model resulted in a good qualitative agreement with all experimental data obtained earlier for Fe-based elastomers. The proposed model is useful to study these novel functional materials, analyze the features of magnetodielectric effect and predict the optimal composition of magnetorheological elastomers for further profound experimental study.
