Abstract

The nucleosynthesis of elements beyond iron is dominated by neutron captures in the s and r processes. However, 32 stable, proton-rich isotopes cannot be formed during those processes, because they are shielded from the s-process flow and r-process beta-decay chains. These nuclei are attributed to the p and rp process. For all those processes, current research in nuclear astrophysics addresses the need for more precise reaction data involving radioactive isotopes. Depending on the particular reaction, direct or inverse kinematics, forward or time-reversed direction are investigated to determine or at least to constrain the desired reaction cross sections. The Facility for Antiproton and Ion Research (FAIR) will offer unique, unprecedented opportunities to investigate many of the important reactions. The high yield of radioactive isotopes, even far away from the valley of stability, allows the investigation of isotopes involved in processes as exotic as the r or rp processes., Comment: Invited Talk given at the Conference Nuclear Physice in Astrophysics VI (NPA6), Lisbon, Portugal, May 19-24 2013. Abstract

The nucleosynthesis of elements beyond iron is dominated by neutron captures in the s and r processes. However, 32 stable, proton-rich isotopes cannot be formed during those processes, because they are shielded from the s-process flow and r-process beta-decay chains. These nuclei are attributed to the p and rp process. For all those processes, current research in nuclear astrophysics addresses the need for more precise reaction data involving radioactive isotopes. Depending on the particular reaction, direct or inverse kinematics, forward or time-reversed direction are investigated to determine or at least to constrain the desired reaction cross sections. The Facility for Antiproton and Ion Research (FAIR) will offer unique, unprecedented opportunities to investigate many of the important reactions. The high yield of radioactive isotopes, even far away from the valley of stability, allows the investigation of isotopes involved in processes as exotic as the r or rp processes., QC 20160224

Abstract

In the developing hippocampus, GABA exerts depolarizing and excitatory actions and contributes to the generation of neuronal network driven giant depolarizing potentials (GDPs). Here, we studied spike time coding at immature GABAergic synapses and its impact on synchronization of the neuronal network during GDPs in the neonatal (postnatal days P2-6) rat hippocampal slices. Using extracellular recordings, we found that the delays of action potentials (APs) evoked by synaptic activation of GABA(A) receptors are long (mean, 65 ms) and variable (within a time window of 10-200 ms). During patch-clamp recordings, depolarizing GABAergic responses were mainly subthreshold and their amplification by persistent sodium conductance was required to trigger APs. AP delays at GABAergic synapses shortened and their variability reduced with an increase in intracellular chloride concentration during whole-cell recordings. Negative shift of the GABA reversal potential (EGABA) with low concentrations of bumetanide, or potentiation of GABA(A) receptors with diazepam reduced GDPs amplitude, desynchronized neuronal firing during GDPs and slowed down GDPs propagation. Partial blockade of GABA(A) receptors with bicuculline increased neuronal synchronization and accelerated GDPs propagation. We propose that spike timing at depolarizing GABA synapses is determined by intracellular chloride concentration. At physiological levels of intracellular chloride GABAergic depolarization does not reach the action potential threshold and amplification of GABAergic responses by non-inactivating sodium conductance is required for postsynaptic AP initiation. Slow and variable excitation at GABAergic synapse determines the level of neuronal synchrony and the rate of GDPs propagation in the developing hippocampus. © 2010 Valeeva, Abdullin, Tyzio, Skorinkin, Nikolski, Ben-Ari and Khazipov.

Abstract

To investigate [sup 5]H resonance states with a better instrumental resolution, we utilized the two-neutron transfer reaction [sup 3]H(t,p)[sup 5]H accomplished with the use of a cryogenic liquid-tritium target and 57.5-MeV triton beam. As a result of this study, a valuable fraction of protons detected at θ[sub lab]=18[sup °]–32[sup °] in ptn coincidence events was attributed to the states of the [sup 5]H nucleus. Two resonance states situated at 1.8±0.1 and 2.7±0.1 MeV above the t+n+n decay threshold were obtained in the missing mass energy spectrum of the [sup 5]H nucleus. The peak located close to E[sub [sup 5]H]=1.8 MeV was clearly seen in the [sup 5]H spectrum obtained from the energy distributions of [sup 3]H nuclei emitted in the reaction [sup 2]H([sup 6]He, [sup 5]H)[sup 3]He at θ[sub lab]=17[sup °]–32[sup °]. The width (Γ[sub obs]≤0.5 MeV) obtained for the two [sup 5]H resonance states is surprisingly small. A state of [sup 4]H with E[sub res]=3.3 MeV and γ[sup 2]=2.3 MeV was obtained in the reaction [sup 2]H(t, p)[sup 4]H from the spectra of protons leaving the target at θ[sub lab]=18[sup °]–32[sup °] and detected in coincidence with neutrons emitted in the decay of [sup 4]H nuclei.© 2003 MAIK “Nauka / Interperiodica”. Abstract

The angular distribution of 26 MeV/n 8He ions elastically scattered from a gaseous helium target was measured in a wide CM angular range. Results are discussed in terms of the potential scattering and neutron transfer. The angular distributions of elastic scattering as well as 1n and 2n transfer reactions of these ions on protons are presented. Finite-range DWBA calculations made for the 2n transfer reaction leading to the ground (0+) and excited (2+) states of 6He underestimate the cross section for 2n transfer to 6He(0+). Analysis of data for this reaction channel suggests the importance of a direct 5H-cluster exchange process. A resonance state of 5H with an energy of 2 MeV above the decay threshold n+n+ 3H was obtained for the first time by making use of the reaction p(6He,2He)5H. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Here, we studied spike time coding at immature GABAergic synapses and its impact on synchronization of the neuronal network during GDPs in the neonatal (postnatal days P2-6) rat hippocampal slices. Using extracellular recordings, we found that the delays of action potentials (APs) evoked by synaptic activation of GABA(A) receptors are long (mean, 65 ms) and variable (within a time window of 10-200 ms). During patch-clamp recordings, depolarizing GABAergic responses were mainly subthreshold and their amplification by persistent sodium conductance was required to trigger APs. AP delays at GABAergic synapses shortened and their variability reduced with an increase in intracellular chloride concentration during whole-cell recordings. Negative shift of the GABA reversal potential (EGABA) with low concentrations of bumetanide, or potentiation of GABA(A) receptors with diazepam reduced GDPs amplitude, desynchronized neuronal firing during GDPs and slowed down GDPs propagation. Partial blockade of GABA(A) receptors with bicuculline increased neuronal synchronization and accelerated GDPs propagation. We propose that spike timing at depolarizing GABA synapses is determined by intracellular chloride concentration. At physiological levels of intracellular chloride GABAergic depolarization does not reach the action potential threshold and amplification of GABAergic responses by non-inactivating sodium conductance is required for postsynaptic AP initiation. Abstract

The 0+ ground state of the 10He nucleus produced in the 3H(8He, p)10He reaction was found at about 2.1 ± 0.2 MeV (T ∼ 2 MeV) above the three-body 8He + n + n breakup threshold. Angular correlations observed for 10He decay products show prominent interference patterns allowing us to draw conclusions about the structure of low-energy excited states. We interpret the observed correlations as a coherent superposition of a broad 1 state having a maximum at energy 4-6 MeV and a 2+ state above 6 MeV, setting both on top of the 0+ state "tail." This anomalous level ordering indicates that the breakdown of the N = 8 shell known in 12Be thus extends also to the 10He system. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Objective: Hormone replacement therapy (HRT) is prescribed to most patients with Turner syndrome (TS) although its use in adult TS patients has not been scientifically evaluated. The present study was performed to compare the short-term effects in adult women with Turner syndrome of low-dose oral conjugated oestrogen (0.625 mg, CE) with relatively high dose ethinyl oestradiol (30 microg, EE2); both combined with an oral progestin., Design and Patients: After 4 months off HRT, 17 young, otherwise healthy women with TS were enrolled in a random, unblinded, crossover study of the two oestrogenic preparations, each given for 6 months., Measurements: We compared parameters of oestrogenic activity that would cover immediate changes in hormone levels, biochemistry, bone turnover, uterine and cardiac variables, which constitute risk factors for later development of diabetes, atherosclerosis, osteoporosis and aortic dissection., Results: Serum FSH returned to normal follicular phase levels only on the EE2 regimen. The hypotrophic endometria normalized with either of the two oestrogen regimens with no excessive hypertrophy. Hyperinsulinaemia was suppressed to normal by both EE2 and CE. PTH and 1,25-dihydroxyvitamin D levels increased on HRT (EE2 > CE), and phosphorus decreased. Alkaline phosphatase, osteocalcin and urinary deoxypyridinoline cross-links (DPD) were high off therapy; the former two suppressed to high-normal levels on the EE2 regimen, but not on CE, and DPD did not normalize with either HRT. Lipid profiles in these young TS patients were normal. Liver enzymes were mildly elevated off therapy and suppressed to normal levels on both regimens, but more so with EE2., Conclusions: The risk factors embodied in hyperinsulinaemia and enhanced bone turnover which, ultimately, have consequences for TS morbidity, are minimized by HRT. In the short term, neither regimen is effective for bone turnover in adult women with Turner syndrome.
