The center of the Milky Way contains stellar populations spanning a range in age and metallicity, with a recent star formation burst producing young and massive stars. Chemical abundances in the most luminous stellar member of the Nuclear Star Cluster (NSC), IRS 7, are presented for $^{19}$F, $^{12}$C, $^{13}$C, $^{14}$N, $^{16}$O, $^{17}$O, and Fe from an LTE analysis based on spherical modeling and radiative transfer with a 25M$_{\odot}$ model atmosphere, whose chemistry was tailored to the derived photospheric abundances. We find IRS 7 to be depleted heavily in both $^{12}$C (~-0.8 dex) and $^{16}$O (~-0.4 dex), while exhibiting an extremely enhanced $^{14}$N abundance (~+1.1 dex), which are isotopic signatures of the deep mixing of CNO-cycled material to the stellar surface. The $^{19}$F abundance is also heavily depleted by ~1 dex relative to the baseline fluorine of the Nuclear Star Cluster, providing evidence that fluorine along with carbon constrain the nature of the deep mixing in this very luminous supergiant. The abundances of the minor isotopes $^{13}$C and $^{17}$O are also derived, with ratios of $^{12}$C/$^{13}$C~5.3 and $^{16}$O/$^{17}$O~525. The derived abundances for IRS 7, in conjunction with previous abundance results for massive stars in the NSC, are compared with rotating and non-rotating models of massive stars and it is found that the IRS 7 abundances overall follow the behavior predicted by stellar models. In particular, we show how key properties of the Solar vicinity can be obtained by secular evolution, with no need for external or special events, like galaxy mergers or paucity in star formation. This concerns the long established double-branch behaviour of [alpha/Fe] versus metallicity and the recently found non-monotonic evolution of the stellar abundance gradient, evaluated at the birth radii of stars. We extend the discussion to other abundance ratios and we suggest a classification scheme, based on the nature of the corresponding yields (primary versus secondary or odd elements) and on the lifetimes of their sources (short-lived versus long-lived ones). The latter property is critical in determining the single- or double- branch behaviour of an elementary abundance ratio in the Solar neighbourhood. We underline the high diagnostic potential of this finding, which can help to separate clearly elements with sources evolving on different time-scales and help determining the site of e.g. the r-process(es). We define the ‘abundance distance’ between the thin and thick disc sequences as an important element for such a separation. Recent spectroscopic explorations of large Galactic stellar samples stars have revealed the existence of red giants with [$\alpha$/Fe] ratios that are anomalously high, given their relatively young ages. We revisit the GALAH DR3 survey to look for both dwarfs and giants with extreme [$\alpha$/Fe] ratios, that is, the upper 1% in the [$\alpha$/Fe]-[Fe/H] plane over the range in [Fe/H] between -1.1 and +0.4 dex. We refer to these outliers as "ex$\alpha$fe" stars. We used the GALAH DR3 data and their value-added catalog to trace the properties (abundances, masses, ages, and kinematics) of the ex$\alpha$fe stars. We investigated the effects of secular evolution and the magnitude limitations of GALAH to understand the mass and metallicity distributions of the sample stars. We also discuss the corresponding biases in previous studies of stars with high [$\alpha$/Fe] in other surveys. We find both dwarf and giant ex$\alpha$fe stars younger than 3 Gyr, which we refer to as "y-ex$\alpha$fe" stars. Dwarf y-ex$\alpha$fe stars exhibit lithium abundances similar to those of young [$\alpha$/Fe]-normal dwarfs at the same age and [Fe/H]. In particular, the youngest and most massive stars of both populations exhibit the highest Li abundances, A(Li)~3.5 dex (i.e., a factor of 2 above the protosolar value), while cooler/older stars exhibit the same Li depletion patterns increasing with both decreasing mass and increasing age. In addition, the [Fe/H] and mass distributions of both the dwarf and giant y-ex$\alpha$fe stars do not differ from those of their [$\alpha$/Fe]-normal counterparts found in the thin disk and they share the same kinematic properties. We conclude that y-ex$\alpha$fe dwarfs and giants are indeed young, their mass distribution shows no peculiarity, and they differ from young [$\alpha$/Fe]-normal stars by their extreme [$\alpha$/Fe] content only. Abundances of fluorine ($^{19}$F), as well as isotopic ratios of $^{16}$O/$^{17}$O, are derived in a sample of luminous young ($\sim$10$^{7}$--10$^{8}$ yrs) red giants in the Galactic center (with galactocentric distances ranging from 0.6--30 pc), using high-resolution infrared spectra and vibration-rotation lines of H$^{19}$F near $\lambda$2.3$\mu$m. Five of the six red giants are members of the Nuclear star cluster that orbits the central supermassive black hole. Previous investigations of the chemical evolution of $^{19}$F in Galactic thin and thick disk stars have revealed that the nucleosynthetic origins of $^{19}$F may be rather complex, resulting from two, or more, astrophysical sites; fluorine abundances behave as a primary element with respect to Fe abundances for thick disk stars and as a secondary element in thin disk stars. The Galactic center red giants analyzed fall within the thin disk relation of F with Fe, having near-solar, to slightly larger, abundances of Fe ($$=+0.08$\pm$0.04), with a slight enhancement of the F/Fe abundance ratio ($$=+0.28$\pm$0.17). In terms of their F and Fe abundances, the Galactic center stars follow the thin disk population, which requires an efficient source of $^{19}$F that could be the winds from core-He burning Wolf Rayet stars, or thermally-pulsing AGB stars, or a combination of both. The observed increase of [F/Fe] with increasing [Fe/H] found in thin disk and Galactic center stars is not predicted by any published chemical evolution models that are discussed, thus a quantitative understanding of yields from the various possible sources of $^{19}$F remains unknown., Comment: 19 pages, 5 figures, 4 tables

Of all the questions that Man asks himself about the Universe, the one concerning the possibility of the existence of an extra-terrestrial life form, and even more of an extra-terrestrial civilization, is probably the most fascinating. We cannot answer it today, but we can imagine the implications for the human species and its future in the Universe.

We revisit large spectroscopic data sets for field stars from the literature to derive the upper Li envelope in the high metallicity regime in our Galaxy. We take advantage of Gaia EDR3 data and state-of-the-art stellar models to precisely determine the position of the sample dwarf stars in the Hertzsprung-Russell diagram. The highest Li abundances are found in field metal-rich warm dwarfs from the GALAH survey, located on the hot side of the Li-dip. Their mean Li value agrees with what was recently derived for warm dwarfs in metal-rich clusters, pointing towards a continuous increase of Li up to super-solar metallicity. However, if only cool dwarfs are considered in GALAH, as done in the other literature surveys, it is found that the upper Li envelope decreases at super-solar metallicities, blurring the actual Li evolution picture. We confirm the suggestion that field and open cluster surveys that found opposite Li behaviour in the high metallicity regime do not sample the same types of stars: The first ones, with the exception of GALAH, miss warm dwarfs that can potentially preserve their original Li content. Although we can discard the bending of the Li upper envelope at high metallicity derived from the analysis of cool star samples, we still need to evaluate the effects of atomic diffusion on warm, metal-rich early-F and late-A type dwarfs before deriving the actual Li abundance at high metallicity., 5 pages, 3 figures, accepted for publication in A&A Letter

A Rb deficiency by a factor two with respect to the Sun has been found in M dwarfs of solar metallicity. This deficiency is difficult to understand from both the observational and nucleosynthesis point of views. To test the reliability of this Rb deficiency, we study the Rb and Zr abundances in a sample of KM-type giant stars in a similar metallicity range extracted from the AMBRE Project. We derive Rb and Zr abundances in 54 giant stars with metallicity close to solar by spectral synthesis in LTE and NLTE. The impact of the Zeeman broadening in the RbI line is also studied. The LTE analysis results in a Rb deficiency in giant stars smaller than that obtained in M dwarfs, but the NLTE [Rb/Fe] ratios are very close to solar in the full metallicity range. This contrasts with the figure found in M dwarfs. We investigate the effect of gravitational settling and magnetic activity as possible causes of the Rb deficiency found in M dwarfs. While, the former phenomenon has a negligible impact on the surface Rb abundance, the existence of an average magnetic field with intensity typical of that observed in M dwarfs may result in systematic Rb abundance underestimations if the Zeeman broadening is not considered in the spectral synthesis. The new [Rb,Zr/Fe] vs. [Fe/H] relationships can be explained when the Rb production by rotating massive stars and low-and-intermediate mass stars are considered, without the need of any deviation from the standard s-process nucleosynthesis in AGB stars as previously suggested., Comment: 21 pages, 4 figures, accepted in Astronomy & Astrophysics

This book, written by a group of specialists in the different areas involved, summarises what we understand of the production and distribution of oxygen, the most abundant metal in the Universe. After presenting the methods of oxygen abundance determination in various media, it traces a panorama of oxygen in the Universe, describes the mechanisms and sites of oxygen production and finally discusses the chemical evolution of oxygen in different galactic and extragalactic contexts. An appendix thoroughly discusses the oxygen atomic data. This book is intended for the graduate student as well as for the professional astrophysicist. Its aim is to provide the reader with tools for a deeper understanding of the covered topics rather than just to summarise the latest results. Following the thread of oxygen, the reader can gain a diagonal perspective of the realm of stellar, galactic and extragalactic astronomy.

Due to their ubiquity and very long main-sequence lifetimes, abundance determinations in M dwarfs provide a powerful and alternative tool to GK dwarfs to study the formation and chemical enrichment history of our Galaxy. In this study, abundances of the neutron-capture elements Rb, Sr, and Zr are derived, for the first time, in a sample of nearby M dwarfs. We focus on stars in the metallicity range-0.5 ≲ [Fe/H] ≲ +0.3, an interval poorly explored for Rb abundances in previous analyses. To do this we use high-resolution, high-signal-to-noise-ratio, optical and near-infrared spectra of 57 M dwarfs observed with CARMENES. The resulting [Sr/Fe] and [Zr/Fe] ratios for most M dwarfs are almost constant at about the solar value, and are identical to those found in GK dwarfs of the same metallicity. However, for Rb we find systematic underabundances ([Rb/Fe] < 0.0) by a factor two on average. Furthermore, a tendency is found for Rb-but not for other heavy elements (Sr, Zr)-to increase with increasing metallicity such that [Rb/Fe] ≳ 0.0 is attained at metallicities higher than solar. These are surprising results, never seen for any other heavy element, and are difficult to understand within the formulation of the s-and r-processes, both contributing sources to the Galactic Rb abundance. We discuss the reliability of these findings for Rb in terms of non-LTE (local thermodynamic equilibrium) effects, stellar activity, or an anomalous Rb abundance in the Solar System, but no explanation is found. We then interpret the full observed [Rb/Fe] versus [Fe/H] trend within the framework of theoretical predictions from state-of-the-art chemical evolution models for heavy elements, but a simple interpretation is not found either. Unevolved metal poor stars are the witness of the early evolution of the Galaxy. The determination of their detailed chemical composition is an important tool to understand the chemical history of our Galaxy. The study of their chemical composition can also be used to constrain the nucleosynthesis of the first generation of supernovae that enriched the interstellar medium. The aim is to observe a sample of extremely metal poor stars (EMP stars) candidates selected from SDSS DR12 release and determine their chemical composition. We obtained high resolution spectra of a sample of five stars using HDS on Subaru telescope and used standard 1D models to compute the abundances. The stars we analysed have a metallicity [Fe/H] between -3.50 dex and -4.25 dex . We confirm that the five metal poor candidates selected from low resolution spectra are very metal poor. We present, the discovery of a new ultra metal-poor star (UMP star) with a metallicity of [Fe/H]= -4.25 dex (SDSS~J1050032.34$-$241009.7). The decomposition of the Solar system abundances of heavy isotopes into their s- and r- components plays a key role in our understanding of the corresponding nuclear processes and the physics and evolution of their astrophysical sites. We present a new method for determining the s- and r- components of the Solar system abundances, fully consistent with our current understanding of stellar nucleosynthesis and galactic chemical evolution. The method is based on a study of the evolution of the solar neighborhood with a state-of-the-art 1-zone model, using recent yields of low and intermediate mass stars as well as of massive rotating stars. We compare our results with previous studies and we provide tables with the isotopic and elemental contributions of the s- and r-processes to the Solar system composition., 22 pages, 8 figures, to appear in MNRAS

In evaluating the number of technological civilizations N in the Galaxy through the Drake formula, emphasis is mostly put on the astrophysical and biotechnological factors describing the emergence of a civilization and much less on its the lifetime, which is intimately related to its demise. It is argued here that this factor is in fact the most important regarding the practical implications of the Drake formula, because it determines the maximal extent of the "sphere of influence" of any technological civilization. The Fermi paradox is studied in the terms of a simplified version of the Drake formula, through Monte Carlo simulations of N civilizations expanding in the Galaxy during their space faring lifetime L. In the framework of that scheme, the probability of "direct contact" is determined as the fraction of the Galactic volume occupied collectively by the "spheres of influence" of N civilizations. The results of the analysis are used to determine regions in the parameter space where the Fermi paradox holds. It is argued that in a large region of the diagram the corresponding parameters suggest rather a "weak" Fermi paradox. Future research may reveal whether a "strong" paradox holds in some part of the parameter space. Finally, it is argued that the value of N is not bound by N=1 from below, contrary to what is usually assumed, but it may have a statistical interpretation., Comment: A few typos corrected, matches published version

I discuss the physical meaning of the Drake equation and I analyze it in a way revealing the implications of its last term, namely the lifetime of technologically evolved civilizations, the importance of which is often overlooked. The analysis allows one to define a region in the parameter space of the Drake equation, where the so-called “great silence” may be easily understood. The adopted framework is also applied to the analysis of the Fermi paradox, under the assumption of a simplified scheme for the colonization of the galaxy. From the joint analysis of the Drake equation and the Fermi paradox, it appears that for sufficiently long-lived civilizations, colonization of the galaxy appears to be the only reasonable option to gain knowledge about other life-forms. The analysis allows one to define a corresponding region in the parameter space of the Drake equation, where the Fermi paradox strongly holds.

The chemical evolution of neutron capture elements in the Milky Way disc is still a matter of debate. We aim to understand the chemical evolution of r-process elements in Milky Way disc. We focus on three pure r-process elements Eu, Gd, and Dy. Using high-resolution FEROS, HARPS, and UVES spectra from the ESO archive, we perform a homogeneous analysis on 6500 FGK Milky Way stars, thanks to the automatic optimization pipeline GAUGUIN. We present abundances of Ba (5057 stars), Eu (6268 stars), Gd (5431 stars), and Dy (5479 stars). We chemically characterize the thin and the thick discs, and a metal-rich alpha-rich population. We find that the [Eu/Fe] ratio follows a continuous sequence from the thin disc to the thick disc as a function of the metallicity. In thick disc stars, the [Eu/Ba] ratio is found to be constant, while the [Gd/Ba] and [Dy/Ba] ratios decrease as a function of the metallicity. These observations clearly indicate a different nucleosynthesis history in the thick disc between Eu and Gd-Dy. We also find that the alpha-rich metal-rich stars are also enriched in r-process elements (like thick disc stars), but their [Ba/Fe] is very different from thick disc stars. Finally, we find that the [r/\alpha] ratio tends to decrease with metallicity, indicating that supernovae of different properties probably contribute differently to the synthesis of r-process elements and \alpha-elements. We provide average abundance trends for [Ba/Fe] and [Eu/Fe] with rather small dispersions, and for the first time for [Gd/Fe] and [Dy/Fe]. This data may help to constrain chemical evolution models of Milky Way r- and s-process elements and the yields of massive stars. Including yields of neutron-star or black hole mergers is now crucial if we want to quantitatively compare observations to Galactic chemical evolution models., Comment: 15 pages, 7 figures

International audience; I present results from a recent work studying galactic chemical evolution with yields from rotating massive stars, they include, for the first time, the combined effect of metallicity, mass loss and rotation for a large grid of stellar masses and for all stages of stellar evolution. The yields of massive stars are weighted by a metallicity dependent function of the rotational velocities, constrained by observations.

We present a comprehensive study of the abundance evolution of the elements from H to U in the Milky Way halo and local disk. We use a consistent chemical evolution model, metallicity dependent isotopic yields from low and intermediate mass stars and yields from massive stars which include, for the first time, the combined effect of metallicity, mass loss and rotation for a large grid of stellar masses and for all stages of stellar evolution. The yields of massive stars are weighted by a metallicity dependent function of the rotational velocities, constrained by observations as to obtain a primary-like $^{14}$N behavior at low metallicity and to avoid overproduction of s-elements at intermediate metallicities. We show that the solar system isotopic composition can be reproduced to better than a factor of two for isotopes up to the Fe-peak, and at the 10\% level for most pure s-isotopes, both light ones (resulting from the weak s-process in rotating massive stars) and the heavy ones (resulting from the main s-process in low and intermediate mass stars). We conclude that the light element primary process (LEPP), invoked to explain the apparent abundance deficiency of the s-elements with A< 100, is not necessary. We also reproduce the evolution of the heavy to light s-elements abundance ratio ([hs/ls]) - recently observed in unevolved thin disk stars - as a result of the contribution of rotating massive stars at sub-solar metallicities. We find that those stars produce primary F and dominate its solar abundance and we confirm their role in the observed primary behavior of N. In contrast, we show that their action is insufficient to explain the small observed values of C12/C13 in halo red giants, which is rather due to internal processes in those stars., 30 pages, 17 figures, published in MNRAS

The Virgo Environmental Survey Tracing Ionised Gas Emission (VESTIGE) is a blind narrow-band Halpha+[NII] imaging survey carried out with MegaCam at the Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope. The survey covers the whole Virgo cluster region from its core to one virial radius (104 deg^2). The sensitivity of the survey is of f(Halpha) ~ 4 x 10^-17 erg sec-1 cm^-2 (5 sigma detection limit) for point sources and Sigma (Halpha) ~ 2 x 10^-18 erg sec^-1 cm^-2 arcsec^-2 (1 sigma detection limit at 3 arcsec resolution) for extended sources, making VESTIGE the deepest and largest blind narrow-band survey of a nearby cluster. This paper presents the survey in all its technical aspects, including the survey design, the observing strategy, the achieved sensitivity in both the narrow-band Halpha+[NII] and in the broad-band r filter used for the stellar continuum subtraction, the data reduction, calibration, and products, as well as its status after the first observing semester. We briefly describe the Halpha properties of galaxies located in a 4x1 deg^2 strip in the core of the cluster north of M87, where several extended tails of ionised gas are detected. This paper also lists the main scientific motivations of VESTIGE, which include the study of the effects of the environment on galaxy evolution, the fate of the stripped gas in cluster objects, the star formation process in nearby galaxies of different type and stellar mass, the determination of the Halpha luminosity function and of the Halpha scaling relations down to ~ 10^6 Mo stellar mass objects, and the reconstruction of the dynamical structure of the Virgo cluster. This unique set of data will also be used to study the HII luminosity function in hundreds of galaxies, the diffuse Halpha+[NII] emission of the Milky Way at high Galactic latitude, and the properties of emission line galaxies at high redshift., Accepted for publication on Astronomy & Astrophysics

Motivated by recent reports concerning the observation of limited enrichment in He but excess K in stars of globular clusters, we revisit the H-burning conditions that lead to the chemical properties of multiple stellar populations in these systems. In particular, we are interested in correlations of He and K with other elements, like O, Na, Al, Mg and Si, reported in stars of NGC 2808. We perform calculations of nucleosynthesis at constant temperature and density, exploring the temperature range of 25 to 200 10$^6$ K (25 to 200 MK), using a detailed nuclear reaction network and the most up-to-date nuclear reaction rates. We find that Mg is the most sensitive "thermometer" of hydrostatic H-burning conditions, pointing to a temperature range of 70-80 MK for NGC~2808, while He is a lesser - but not negligible - constraint. K can be produced at the levels reported for NGC 2808 at temperatures $>$180 MK and Si at T$>$80 MK. However, in the former temperature range Al and Na are totally destroyed and no correlation can be obtained, in contrast to the reported observations. None of the putative polluter sources proposed so far seem to satisfy the ensemble of nucleosynthesis constraints., Accepted for publication in A&A

Recent observations suggest a "double-branch" behaviour of Li/H versus metallicity in the local thick and thin discs. This is reminiscent of the corresponding O/Fe versus Fe/H behaviour, which has been explained as resulting from radial migration in the Milky Way disc. We use a semi-analytical model of disc evolution with updated chemical yields and parameterised radial migration. We explore the cases of long-lived (red giants of a few Gy lifetime) and shorter-lived (Asymptotic Giant Branch stars of several 10$^8$ yr) stellar sources of Li, as well as those of low and high primordial Li. We show that both factors play a key role in the overall Li evolution. We find that the observed "two-branch" Li behaviour is only directly obtained in the case of long-lived stellar Li sources and low primordial Li. In all other cases, the data imply systematic Li depletion in stellar envelopes, thus no simple picture of the Li evolution can be obtained. Positron annihilation in the Galaxy has been observed for half a century now, but the positron sources have not been identified yet. A rare class of supernovae is now suggested to be the main positron producer.

We use N-body chemo-dynamic simulations to study the coupling between morphology, kinematics and metallicity of the bar/bulge region of our Galaxy. We make qualitative comparisons of our results with available observations and find very good agreement. We conclude that this region is complex, since it comprises several stellar components with different properties -- i.e. a boxy/peanut bulge, thin and thick disc components, and, to lesser extents, a disky pseudobulge, a stellar halo and a small classical bulge -- all cohabiting in dynamical equilibrium. Our models show strong links between kinematics and metallicity, or morphology and metallicity, as already suggested by a number of recent observations. Mergers of compact binaries (of a neutron star and another neutron star or a black hole, NSMs) are suggested to be the promising astrophysical site of the r-process. While the average coalescence timescale of NSMs appears to be > 100 Myr, most of previous chemical evolution models indicate that the observed early appearance and large dispersion of [r/Fe] in Galactic halo stars at [Fe/H] < -2.5 favors shorter coalescence times of 1-10 Myr. We argue that this is not the case for the models assuming the formation of the Galactic halo from clustering of subhalos with different star formation histories as suggested by Ishimaru et al. (2015). We present a stochastic chemical evolution model of the subhalos, in which the site of the r-process is assumed to be mainly NSMs with a coalescence timescale of 100 Myr. In view of the scarcity of NSMs, their occurrence in each subhalo is computed with a Monte Carlo method. Our results show that the less massive subhalos evolve at lower metallicities and generate highly r-process-enhanced stars. An assembly of these subhalos leaves behind the large star-to-star scatters of [r/Fe] in the Galactic halo as observed. However, the observed scatters of [Sr/Ba] at low metallicities indicate the presence of an additional site that partially contributes to the enrichment of light neutron-capture elements such as Sr. The high enhancements of [r/Fe] at low metallicities found in our low-mass subhalo models also qualitatively reproduce the abundance signatures of the stars in the recently discovered ultra-faint dwarf galaxy Reticulum II. To account for the observed differential metallicity distribution (DMD) of the Milky Way halo, a semi-analytical model is presented in the framework of the hierarchical merging paradigm for structure formation. It is assumed that the Milky Way halo is composed of a number of sub-haloes with properties either as observed in the dwarf satellite galaxies of the Local group (shape of metallicity distribution, effective yield) or derived from calculations of structure formation (sub-halo distribution function). With reasonable assumptions for the parameters involved, we find that the overall shape and effective yield of the Galactic halo DMD can be reproduced in the framework of such a simple model. The low metallicity tail of the DMD presents a defficiency of stars with respect to the simple model predictions (akin to the G-dwarf problem in the solar neighborhood); it is suggested that an early infall phase can account for that problem, as well as for the observed DMDs of dwarf satellite galaxies.Accretion of galaxies similar (but not identical) to the progenitors of present day dwarf satellites of the Milky Way may well have formed the Galactic halo., 10 pages, 6 fig. to appear in Astronomy and Astrophysics

Globular clusters are of paramount importance for testing theories of stellar evolution and early galaxy formation. Strong evidence for multiple populations of stars in globular clusters derives from observed abundance anomalies. A puzzling example is the recently detected Mg-K anticorrelation in NGC 2419. We perform Monte Carlo nuclear reaction network calculations to constrain the temperature-density conditions that gave rise to the elemental abundances observed in this elusive cluster. We find a correlation between stellar temperature and density values that provide a satisfactory match between simulated and observed abundances in NGC 2419 for all relevant elements (Mg, Si, K, Ca, Sc, Ti, and V). Except at the highest densities ($\rho \gtrsim 10^8$~g/cm$^3$), the acceptable conditions range from $\approx$ $100$~MK at $\approx$ $10^8$~g/cm$^3$ to $\approx$ $200$~MK at $\approx$ $10^{-4}$~g/cm$^3$. This result accounts for uncertainties in nuclear reaction rates and variations in the assumed initial composition. We review hydrogen burning sites and find that low-mass stars, AGB stars, massive stars, or supermassive stars cannot account for the observed abundance anomalies in NGC 2419. Super-AGB stars could be viable candidates for the polluter stars if stellar model parameters can be fine-tuned to produce higher temperatures. Novae, either involving CO or ONe white dwarfs, could be interesting polluter candidates, but a current lack of low-metallicity nova models precludes firmer conclusions. We also discuss if additional constraints for the first-generation polluters can be obtained by future measurements of oxygen, or by evolving models of second-generation low-mass stars with a non-canonical initial composition., Comment: 24 pages, 9 Figures

We study the role of radial motions of stars and gas on the evolution of abundance profiles in the Milky Way disk. We investigate, in a parametrized way, the impact of radial flows of gas and radial migration of stars induced mainly by the Galactic bar and its iteraction with the spiral arms. We use a model with several new or up-dated ingredients (atomic and molecular gas phases, star formation depending on molecular gas, recent sets of metallicity-dependent stellar yields from H to Ni, observationally inferred SNIa rates), which reproduces well most global and local observables of the Milky Way. We obtain abundance profiles flattening both in the inner disk (because of radial flows) and in the outer disk (because of the adopted star formation law). The gas abundance profiles flatten with time, but the corresponding stellar profiles appear to be steeper for younger stars, because of radial migration. We find a correlation between the stellar abundance profiles and O/Fe, which is a proxy for stellar age. Our final abundance profiles are in overall agreement with observations, but slightly steeper (by 0.01-0.02 dex/kpc) for elements above S. We find an interesting "odd-even effect" in the behaviour of the abundance profiles (steeper slopes for odd elements) for all sets of stellar yields; however, this behaviour does not appear in observations, suggesting that the effect is, perhaps, overestimated in current stellar nucleosynthesis calculations., 16 pages, 11 figures, accepted in Astronomy and Astrophysics

We study the role of radial migration of stars on the chemical evolution of the Milky Way disk. In particular, we are interested in the impact of that process on the local properties of the disk (age-metallicity relation and its dispersion, metallicity distribution, evolution of abundance ratios) and on the morphological properties of the resulting thick and thin disks.We use a model with several new or up-dated ingredients: atomic and molecular gas phases, star formation depending on molecular gas, yields from the recent homogeneous grid provided by Nomoto et al. (2013), observationally inferred SNIa rates. We describe radial migration with parametrised time- and radius-dependent diffusion coefficients, based on the analysis of a N-body+SPH simulation. We also consider parametrised radial gas flows, induced by the action of the Galactic bar. Our model reproduces well the present day values of most of the main global observables of the MW disk and bulge, and also the observed "stacked" evolution of MW-type galaxies from van Dokkum et al. (2013). The azimuthally averaged radial velocity of gas inflow is constrained to less than a few tenths of km/s. Radial migration is constrained by the observed dispersion in the age-metallicity relation. Assuming that the thick disk is the oldest (>9 Gyr) part of the disk, we find that the adopted radial migration scheme can reproduce quantitatively the main local properties of the thin and thick disk. The thick disk extends up to ~11 kpc and has a scale length of 1.8 kpc, considerably shorter than the thin disk, because of the inside-out formation scheme. We also show how, in this framework, current and forthcoming spectroscopic observations can constrain the nucleosynthesis yields of massive stars for the metallicity range of 0.1 solar to 2-3 solar., 27 pages, 25 figures, accepted for publication in Astronomy and Astrophysics

SNIa in the Milky Way bulge may supply about 12% of the positrons required by observations of the 511 keV emission from the inner Galaxy, while positrons from disk SNIa may account for the totality of that emission. It is argued here that most of the disk positrons propagate away from the disk (due to the low density environment) and the resulting low surface brightness annihilation emission is currently undetectable by SPI/INTEGRAL. It is also argued that a large fraction of the disk positrons may be transported via the regular magnetic field of the Galaxy into the bulge and annihilate there. These ideas may alleviate current difficulties in interpreting INTEGRAL results in a “conventional” framework.

Motivated by the recent report of a high Li6 ``plateau'' extending to low metallicities in Galactic halo stars, we study the energetics of an early production of Li6 through the interaction of energetic particles with the interstellar medium. We then explore the potential of various candidate sources of pre-galactic energetic particles and show that, in general, they fail to satisfy the observational and theoretical requirements (especially if the Li6 plateau is at a considerably higher level than observed). Succesful candidates appear to be: supernova explosions with abnormally low metal yield; the massive black hole in the Galactic center (provided that it was formed early on and that it was then radiating much more efficiently than today); and, perhaps, an early accretion phase of supermassive black holes in galaxies. Assuming that Li6 is indeed pre-galactic, we study the galactic evolution of the light isotopes Li7, Li6, and Be in a self-consistent way. We find that the existence of a Li6 plateau is hard to justify, unless a fine-tuned and metallicity-dependent depletion mechanism of Li6 in stellar envelopes is invoked. The depletion of Li6 should be different, both in magnitude and in its metallicity dependence, than the depletion required to explain current observations of Li (mostly Li7) in halo stars. If the recently reported Li6 ``plateau'' is confirmed, our analysis suggests important implications for our understanding of the production, evolution, and stellar depletion of the Li isotopes.

Observed large scatters in Eu, Ba, and Sr abundances of metal-poor stars provide clues to determine the site(s) of r -process. In particular, our observation using Subaru HDS gives sub-solar values of [Eu/Fe] for three extremely metal-poor stars. Using an inhomogeneous chemical evolution model, we show that the dominant source of Eu to be the low-mass end of the supernova mass range to account for the observation. On the other hand, scatters in [Sr/Ba] suggest existence of “weak” r -process, which produces lighter nuclei. We also discuss the yield of weak r -process, using new data of Pd abundances.

Based on the results of recent surveys, we have constructed a relatively homogeneous set of observational data concerning the chemical and photometric properties of Low Surface Brightness galaxies (LSBs). We have compared the properties of this data set with the predictions of models of the chemical and spectrophotometric evolution of LSBs. The basic idea behind the models, i.e. that LSBs are similar to 'classical' High Surface Brightness spirals except for a larger angular momentum, is found to be consistent with the results of their comparison with these data. However, some observed properties of the LSBs (e.g. their colours, and specifically the existence of red LSBs) as well as the large scatter in these properties, cannot be reproduced by the simplest models with smoothly evolving star formation rates over time. We argue that the addition of bursts and/or truncations in the star formation rate histories can alleviate that discrepancy., Comment: Accepted in MNRAS. 14 pages. 13 figures

We show that simple models of the chemical and spectrophotometric evolution of galaxies can be used to explore the properties of present-day galaxies and especially the causes of the observed variety among disc galaxies. We focus on the link between ``classical'' spirals and Low Surface Brightness galaxies.

We develop a detailed model of the Milky Way (a ``prototypical'' disk galaxy) and extend it to other disks with the help of some simple scaling relations, obtained in the framework of Cold Dark Matter models. This phenomenological (``hybrid'') approach to the study of disk galaxy evolution allows us to reproduce successfully a large number of observed properties of disk galaxies in the local Universe and up to redshift z~1. The important conclusion is that, on average, massive disks have formed the bulk of their stars earlier than their lower mass counterparts: the ``star formation hierarchy'' has been apparently opposite to the ``dark matter assembly'' hierarchy. It is not yet clear whether ``feedback'' (as used in semi-analytical models of galaxy evolution) can explain that discrepancy.

A description is given of the samples of Low Surface Brightness galaxies (LSBs) used for comparison with models of their chemical and spectro-photometric evolution (Boissier et al., this Volume). These samples show the large variation and scatter in observed global properties of LSBs, some of which cannot be modeled without adding starbursts or truncations to their star formation history.
