In this study, we evaluate the body and coda wave attenuation characteristics within Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan as part of Central Asia. The selected database consists of 354 broadband seismograms from 179 local earthquakes recorded by 24 different stations within the period of 2015 through 2018. First, coda Q has been inferred for different coda window lengths of 20, 30, 40, and 50 s using the single-backscattering interpretation. The coda Q values increase by increasing the coda window length. We show that coda attenuation properties in Central Asia are better modeled by multiple-scattering and surface wave regimes for long-distance records without invoking any depth dependence of the attenuation properties in the crust. Furthermore, standard errors and convergence of different components’ QC indicate that we can fit envelope records of coda waves much better using a coda window length of 50 s. Therefore, we evaluate average coda quality factor functions as QC = 261 f0.601 and QC = 219 f0.633 assuming multiple-scattering and surface wave regimes for a coda window length of 50 s in the frequency range of 1 to 20 Hz for distances up to 200 km. We also show that the source to site distance of records has a significant impact on coda Q estimates. For a shorter distance range up to 100 km, attenuation attributes of Central Asia are better captured by a single-scattering model. We reevaluate the average coda quality factor function as QC = 222 f0.692 assuming a single-backscattering model for a coda window length of 50 s in the frequency range of 1 to 20 Hz for distances up to 100 km. Moreover, we determine QP = 158 f0.706 and QS = 152 f0.856 with a geometrical spreading function of R−1 using the multiple-station coda normalization method.

The impact of unconsolidated sedimentary basins on ground motion amplification is of particular interest for earthquake engineers and seismologists. The Mississippi embayment (ME) of the New Madrid seismic zone, located in the central United States, is covered with a thick layer of unconsolidated soil deposits. Thus, the estimation of site response in this region is vital to simulate site-specific ground motions and to conduct site-specific probabilistic seismic hazard analysis. We evaluated site amplification at 11 stations within the ME, employing the horizontal-to-vertical spectral ratio (HVSR) technique. Regarding the results obtained from this study, weak ground motions recorded by stations on the unconsolidated ME sediments are amplified 3–7 times for frequencies less than 5 Hz compared to stations located on bedrock. The fundamental resonant frequencies vary from 0.2 to 0.4 Hz within the ME. We investigated differences between the HVSRs obtained from P-waves, S-waves, coda, and pre-event noise. All fundamental frequencies obtained from different seismic phases are in good agreement with a less than 10% difference. The fundamental frequencies of the P-wave and S-wave are relatively higher due to higher velocity of the P-wave and S-wave compared to other phases since the velocity of seismic waves and fundamental frequencies are proportional. There is a good correlation between the HVSR of the S-wave, coda, and pre-event noise portions for frequencies more than 4 Hz. For the frequencies less than 4 Hz, the HVSR of the S-wave is higher than the HVSR of coda by a factor of 3. Reflections of S-waves from the edges of the unconsolidated sedimentary basin of the ME produce surface waves. The presence of basin-induced surface waves in the coda portion for frequencies less than 3 Hz results in increased amplitude of coda, and as a result, slower decay rate with time implying higher Q values. These basin-induced surface waves have a period of 0.5–4.0 s.

Attenuation characteristics in the New Madrid Seismic Zone (NMSZ) are estimated from 157 local seismograph recordings out of 46 earthquakes of 2.6 ≤ M ≤ 4.1 with hypocentral distances up to 60 km and focal depths down to 25 km. Digital waveform seismograms were obtained from local earthquakes in the NMSZ recorded by the Center for Earthquake Research and Information (CERI) at the University of Memphis. Using the coda normalization method, we tried to determine Q values and geometrical spreading exponents at 13 center frequencies. The scatter of the data and trade-off between the geometrical spreading and the quality factor did not allow us to simultaneously derive both these parameters from inversion. Assuming 1/R 1.0 as the geometrical spreading function in the NMSZ, the Q P and Q S estimates increase with increasing frequency from 354 and 426 at 4 Hz to 729 and 1091 at 24 Hz, respectively. Fitting a power law equation to the Q estimates, we found the attenuation models for the P waves and S waves in the frequency range of 4 to 24 Hz as Q P = (115.80 ± 1.36) f (0.495 ± 0.129) and Q S = (161.34 ± 1.73) f (0.613 ± 0.067), respectively. We did not consider Q estimates from the coda normalization method for frequencies less than 4 Hz in the regression analysis since the decay of coda amplitude was not observed at most bandpass filtered seismograms for these frequencies. Q S/Q P > 1, for 4 ≤ f ≤ 24 Hz as well as strong intrinsic attenuation, suggest that the crust beneath the NMSZ is partially fluid-saturated. Further, high scattering attenuation indicates the presence of a high level of small-scale heterogeneities inside the crust in this region.

Unique properties of coda waves are employed to evaluate the frequency dependent quality factor of Lg waves using the coda normalization method in the New Madrid seismic zone of the central United States. Instrument and site responses are eliminated and source functions are isolated to construct the inversion problem. For this purpose, we used 121 seismograms from 37 events with moment magnitudes, M , ranging from 2.5 to 5.2 and hypocentral distances from 120 to 440 km recorded by 11 broadband stations. A singular value decomposition (SVD) algorithm is used to extract Q values from the data, while the geometric spreading exponent is assumed to be a constant. Inversion results are then fitted with a power law equation from 3 to 12 Hz to derive the frequency dependent quality factor function. The final results of the analysis are Q V Lg ( f ) = (410 ± 38) f 0.49 ± 0.05 for the vertical component and Q H Lg ( f ) = (390 ± 26) f 0.56 ± 0.04 for the horizontal component, where the term after ± sign represents one standard error. For stations within the Mississippi embayment with an average sediment depth of 1 km around the Memphis metropolitan area, estimation of quality factor using the coda normalization method is not well-constrained at low frequencies ( f

In this study, two new moment resisting connections of beams to precast concrete columns under lateral load were analyzed via application of nonlinear finite element analysis software ABAQUS 6.10. The precast connections considered were the beam-column connections in which precast beams is connected to continuous precast column with corbel using (i) inverted E (bolted connection) and (ii) box section (welded connection). Connection responses associated with lateral resistance, lateral stiffness, ductility, and energy dissipation were compared to a reference monolithic connection. Achieved lateral resistance, lateral stiffness and ductility of the proposed connections was approximately 98%, 80% and 80% of the equivalent monolithic connection, respectively. The effect of axial load on column and compressive strength of concrete on behavior of the connections were studied. The analytical results show that the performance of two proposed precast connections were close to the performance of corresponding monolithic connection.
