Abstract

This essay evaluates the promise and practice of agricultural biotechnology (ABT). It considers the first decade of ABT products (1987–1997) and their environmental, social, nutritional and ethical consequences. Since the first plant was transformed by genetic engineering in 1983, the ABT industry has prophesied “win-win” scenarios, with higher-value crops at lower environmental costs, plus products tailored to meet the special nutritional needs of the elderly and other groups.1 Proponents furthermore promise that ABT, if affordable and accessible for third world countries, would help overcome world hunger by (1) increasing food production, (2) lowering food production and consumption costs, and (3) developing products to meet the special needs of nutritionally deprived groups. ABT’s contributions to medical diagnosis and treatment, as well as commercial employment and trade, might also improve the health and incomes of many who might otherwise be hungry.2.
