Abstract Objective The aim of this study is to assess the use of machine learning methodologies in the diagnosis of endometriosis (EM). Methods This study included a total of 106 patients with EM and 203 patients with non-EM conditions (like simple cysts and simple uterine fibroids), all admitted to the Shunyi Women’s and Children’s Hospital of Beijing Children’s Hospital between January 2017 and September 2022. All participants were free of comorbidities and their diagnoses were confirmed via postoperative pathology. Comparative analysis was conducted between the EM and non-EM groups. Baseline data were assessed, including white blood cell count, neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR), platelet-to-lymphocyte ratio, lymphocyte-to-monocyte ratio, mean platelet volume, hemoglobin, carbohydrate antigen 125 (CA125), carbohydrate antigen 199, coagulation parameters, and other serologic indicators. An optimal predictive model was developed using an artificial intelligence algorithm to determine the presence of EM. The objective is to provide new insights for the clinical diagnosis and treatment of EM. Results The random forest algorithm demonstrated superior performance when compared to decision trees, LogitBoost, artificial neural networks, naïve Bayes, support vector machines, and linear regression in machine learning methods. Combining CA125 with the NLR yielded a better prediction of EM than using CA125 alone when applying the random forest algorithm. The mucosal barrier is crucial for intestinal homeostasis, and goblet cells are essential for maintaining the mucosal barrier integrity. The proviral integration site for Moloney murine leukemia virus-1 (PIM1) kinase regulates multiple cellular functions, but its role in intestinal homeostasis during colitis is unknown. Here, we demonstrate that PIM1 is prominently elevated in the colonic epithelia of both ulcerative colitis patients and murine models, in the presence of intestinal microbiota. Epithelial PIM1 leads to decreased goblet cells, thus impairing resistance to colitis and colitis-associated colorectal cancer (CAC) in mice. Mechanistically, PIM1 modulates goblet cell differentiation through the Wnt and Notch signaling pathways. Interestingly, PIM1 interacts with histone deacetylase 2 (HDAC2) and downregulates its level via phosphorylation, thereby altering the epigenetic profiles of Wnt signaling pathway genes. Collectively, these findings investigate the unknown function of the PIM1–HDAC2 axis in goblet cell differentiation and ulcerative colitis/CAC pathogenesis, which points to the potential for PIM1-targeted therapies of ulcerative colitis and CAC.

Background Impaired ventilatory efficiency during exercise is a predictor of mortality in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. However, little is known about the clinical features and associated factors of impaired ventilatory efficiency in China.Methods We conducted a cross-sectional community-based study in China and collected demographic and clinical information, cardiopulmonary exercise testing, spirometry, and CT data. Impaired ventilatory efficiency was defined by a nadir ventilatory equivalent for CO2 production above the upper limit of normal. Multivariable linear and logistic regression models were used to explore the clinical features and associated factors of impaired ventilatory efficiency.Results The final analyses included 941 subjects, 702 (74.6%) of whom had normal ventilatory efficiency and 239 (25.4%) had impaired ventilatory efficiency. Understanding the roles of core bacterial taxa in forage production is crucial for developing sustainable fertilization practices that enhance the soil bacteria and forage yield. This study aims to investigate the impact of different fertilization regimes on soil bacterial community structure and function, with a particular focus on the role of core bacterial taxa in contributing to soil nutrient content and enhancing forage yield. Field experiments and high-throughput sequencing techniques were used to analyze the soil bacterial community structure and function under various fertilization regimes, including six treatments, control with no amendment (CK), double the standard rate of organic manure (T01), the standard rate of organic manure with nitrogen input equal to T04 (T02), half the standard rate of inorganic fertilizer plus half the standard rate of organic manure (T03), the standard rate of inorganic fertilizer reflecting local practice (T04), and double the standard rate of inorganic fertilizer (T05). The results demonstrated that organic manure treatments, particularly T01, significantly increased the forage yield and the diversity of core bacterial taxa. Core taxa from the Actinomycetota, Alphaproteobacteria, and Gammaproteobacteria classes were crucial in enhancing the soil nutrient content, directly correlating with forage yield. Fertilization significantly influenced functions relating to carbon and nitrogen cycling, with core taxa playing central roles. The diversity of core microbiota and soil nutrient levels were key determinants of forage yield variations across treatments. These findings underscore the critical role of core bacterial taxa in agroecosystem productivity and advocate for their consideration in fertilization strategies to optimize forage yield, supporting the shift towards sustainable agricultural practices.

Abstract Background Mutations in the NMDA receptor are known to disrupt glutamatergic signaling crucial for early neurodevelopment, often leading to severe global developmental delay/intellectual disability, epileptic encephalopathy, and cerebral palsy phenotypes. Both seizures and movement disorders can be highly treatment-refractory. Results We describe a targeted ABA n-of-1 treatment trial with intrathecal MgSO4, rationally designed based on the electrophysiologic properties of this gain of function mutation in the GRIN1 NMDA subunit. Conclusion Although the invasive nature of the trial necessitated a short-term, non-randomized, unblinded intervention, quantitative longitudinal neurophysiologic monitoring indicated benefit, providing class II evidence in support of intrathecal MgSO4 for select forms of GRIN disorders.

Cysticercus pisiformis is a kind of tapeworm larvae of Taenia pisiformis, which parasitizes the liver envelope, omentum, mesentery, and rectum of rodents such as rabbits. Cysteine protease inhibitors derived from helminth were immunoregulatory molecules of intermediate hosts and had an immunomodulatory function that regulates the production of inflammatory factors. Thus, in the present research, the recombinant Stefin of C. pisiformis was confirmed to have the potential to fight inflammation in LPS-Mediated RAW264.7 murine macrophages. CCK8 test showed that rCpStefin below 50 μg/mL concentration did not affect cellular viability. Moreover, the NO production level determined by the Griess test was decreased. In addition, the secretion levels of IL-1β, IL-6, and TNF-α as measured by ELISA were decreased. Furthermore, it exerted anti-inflammatory activity by decreasing the production of proinflammatory cytokines and proinflammatory mediators, including IL-1β, IL-6, TNF-α, iNOS, and COX-2 at the gene transcription level, as measured by qRT-PCR. Therefore, Type I cystatin derived from C. pisiformis suppresses the LPS-Mediated inflammatory response of the intermediate host and is a potential candidate for the treatment of inflammatory diseases.

Background The inter-relationships among neutrophilic airway inflammation, air trapping and future exacerbation in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) remain unclear.Objective To evaluate the associations between sputum neutrophil proportions and future exacerbation in COPD and to determine whether these associations are modified by significant air trapping.Methods Participants with completed data were included and followed up to the first year in the Early Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease study (n=582). Sputum neutrophil proportions and high-resolution CT-related markers were measured at baseline. Sputum neutrophil proportions were dichotomised based on their median (86.2%) to low and high levels. In addition, subjects were divided into the air trapping or non-air trapping group. Outcomes of interest included COPD exacerbation (separately any, severe and frequent exacerbation, occurring in the first year of follow-up). Multivariable logistic regressions were performed to examine the risk of severe exacerbation and frequent exacerbation with either neutrophilic airway inflammation groups or air trapping groups.Results There was no significant difference between high and low levels of sputum neutrophil proportions in the exacerbation in the preceding year. After the first year of follow-up, subjects with high sputum neutrophil proportions had increased risks of severe exacerbation (OR=1.68, 95% CI: 1.09 to 2.62, p=0.020). Subjects with high sputum neutrophil proportions and significant air trapping had increased odds of having frequent exacerbation (OR=3.29, 95% CI: 1.30 to 9.37, p=0.017) and having severe exacerbation (OR=2.72, 95% CI: 1.42 to 5.43, p=0.003) when compared with those who had low sputum neutrophil proportions and non-air trapping.Conclusions We found that subjects with high sputum neutrophil proportions and significant air trapping are prone to future exacerbation of COPD. It may be a helpful predictor of future exacerbation.

Background Evidence regarding clinical features and outcomes of individuals with non-obstructive chronic bronchitis (NOCB) remains scarce, especially in never-smokers. We aimed to investigate the clinical features and 1-year outcomes of individuals with NOCB in the Chinese population.Methods We obtained data on participants in the Early Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease Study who had normal spirometry (post-bronchodilator forced expiratory volume in 1 s/forced vital capacity ≥0.70). NOCB was defined as chronic cough and sputum production for at least 3 months for two consecutive years or more at baseline in participants with normal spirometry. We assessed the differences in demographics, risk factors, lung function, impulse oscillometry, CT imaging and frequency of acute respiratory events between participants with and without NOCB.Results NOCB was present in 13.1% (149/1140) of participants with normal spirometry at baseline. Background The relationship between airway inflammation in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and clinical characteristics remains unclear. This study aimed to investigate the airway inflammatory phenotypes in COPD and their association with clinical characteristics.Methods 895 patients with COPD were recruited from Guangdong Province, China in this study. Each patient underwent questionnaire interviews, spirometry testing, CT scans and induced sputum examination. Classification of airway inflammation phenotypes was based on sputum inflammatory cell counts. Covariance analysis was applied to assess associations with airway inflammation phenotypes.Results In this study, we found that neutrophilic phenotype (NP, 58.0%) was the most common airway inflammation phenotype in patients with COPD, followed by mixed granulocytic phenotype (MGP, 32.6%), eosinophilic phenotype (EP, 5.4%) and paucigranulocytic phenotype (PP, 4.0%). Compared with NP patients, those with MGP exhibited more frequent chronic respiratory symptoms, and a higher proportion of individuals classified under Global Initiative for Chronic Obstructive Lung Disease stages 3 and 4. After adjusting for confounding factors, MGP patients had lower lung function, and more severe emphysema and air trapping. On the contrary, patients with PP had the best pulmonary function and less emphysema and air trapping.Conclusions NP was the most common airway inflammation phenotype in patients with COPD. Patients with MGP had more respiratory symptoms, greater loss of lung function, and more severe emphysema and gas trapping compared with those with NP. Meanwhile, PP may be a phenotype of mild damage to lung structure in patients with COPD.

The physiological functions of ZIP14 have been uncovered mainly through two lines of in vivo studies that examined the phenotypes of ZIP14 loss, including studies of humans with ZIP14 mutations and animals with ZIP14 deficiency. This mini review aims at presenting an updated view of the important advances made towards understanding the genetic and pathological mechanisms of brain manganese overload caused by ZIP14 deficiency.

In recent years, China vigorously develops energy conservation and emission reduction, in order to actively respond to the national call to make the aircraft operation process reduce unnecessary costs and strengthen the safety of the aircraft taxiing process. This paper studies the spatio-temporal network model and dynamic planning algorithm to plan the aircraft taxiing path. First, the relationship between the force, thrust and engine fuel consumption rate during aircraft taxiing is analyzed to determine the fuel consumption rate during aircraft taxiing. Then, a two-dimensional directed graph of airport network nodes is constructed. The state of the aircraft is recorded when considering the dynamic characteristics of the node sections, the taxiing path is determined for the aircraft using dijkstra's algorithm, and the overall taxiing path is discretized from node to node using dynamic planning to design a mathematical model with the shortest taxiing distance as the goal. At the same time, the optimal taxiing path is planned for the aircraft in the process of avoiding aircraft conflicts. Thus, a state-attribute-space-time field taxiing path network is established. Through example simulations, simulation data are finally obtained to plan conflict-free paths for six aircraft, the total fuel consumption for the six aircraft planning is 564.29 kg, and the total taxiing time is 1765s. This completed the validation of the dynamic planning algorithm of the spatio-temporal network model.

Drought and poor soil quality are the main characteristics of extreme environments in arctic–alpine areas. Understanding how herbaceous plants in alpine grasslands maintain the normal supply and utilisation of nutrients under different rainfall conditions is key to maintaining population stability. In the present study, the native plants Poa crymophila and Stipa purpurea of the Qinghai–Tibet Plateau were used to conduct a controlled experiment involving water and fertiliser to analyse their physiological responses in terms of nutrient uptake and utilisation. The results showed that decreased soil moisture increased proline and non-structural carbohydrates in P. crymophila, mainly accumulating in the leaves and stems. Nitrogen (N) addition promoted proline accumulation, whereas nonstructural carbohydrate content decreased. However, the proline and non-structural carbohydrate contents of S. purpurea were less affected by water and fertiliser. Additionally, drought restricted rhizospheric and non-rhizospheric alkaline-hydrolysed N release, increased rapidly available phosphorus (RAP) content in rhizospheric soil, limited root growth, and reduced surface area, root length, and root volume. Both aboveground and underground N fertiliser utilisation rates decreased. Under well-hydrated conditions (WH), high N levels increased rhizospheric alkaline-hydrolysed N and urease activity while inhibiting RAP and activity of alkaline phosphatase contents, thereby limiting root growth and reducing N fertiliser utilisation. The results indicate that both plant species have relatively low overall nutrient requirements that are limited mainly by water availability. The addition of low amounts of fertiliser is beneficial for nutrient release and utilisation, improving their adaptability to arctic–alpine environments and their suitability and superiority in the community. This study has significant implications for nutrient management and ecological restoration measures in arctic–alpine grasslands.

English as Foreign Language (EFL) learners’ cognitive processes have been a research focus in listening assessment. Most studies use correct responses as data, but undervalue the rich information of the incorrect answers or options (in the case of multiple choice questions, MCQ). However, the MCQ distractors are often intentionally designed to reveal learners’ problems or barriers. In order to diagnose the EFL learners’ listening barriers through incorrect responses, Cognitive Diagnostic Models (CDMs) for bugs were adopted, hence the name Bug-CDMs. First, five EFL listening barrier attributes were identified and two Bug Q-matrices were developed to comparatively analyze the learner’s responses with different Bug-CDMs. The results revealed that Bug-GDINA was the optimal model, and the most prevalent barriers were semantic understanding and vocabulary recognition. These barriers confirmed both compensatory and non-compensatory relationships in causing listening comprehension failures. The study proved the feasibility of Bug-GDINA in diagnosing listening barriers from the incorrect responses. Limitations and suggestions for further research were also proposed.

Abstract Background: Preserved ratio impaired spirometry (PRISm) refers to decreased forced expiratory volume in 1 s (FEV1) in the setting of preserved ratio. Little is known about the role of PRISm and its complex relation with small airway dysfunction (SAD) and lung volume. Therefore, we aimed to investigate the associations between PRISm and SAD and lung volume. Methods: We conducted a cross-sectional community-dwelling study in China. Demographic data, standard respiratory epidemiology questionnaire, spirometry, impulse oscillometry (IOS) and computed tomography (CT) data were collected. PRISm was defined as post-bronchodilator FEV1/FVC ≥ 0.70 and FEV1 0.07 kPa/L/s and LAA− 856>20%, respectively. Analysis of covariance and logistic regression were used to determine associations between PRISm and SAD and lung volume. We then repeated the analysis with a lower limit of normal definition of spirometry criteria and FVC definition of PRISm. Moreover, we also performed subgroup analyses in ever smoker, never smoker, subjects without airway reversibility or self-reported diagnosed asthma, and subjects with CT-measured total lung capacity ≥70% of predicted. Results: The final analysis included 1439 subjects. Abstract Background Aging has been evidenced to bring about some structural and functional lung changes, especially in COPD. However, whether aging affects SAD, a possible precursor of COPD, has not been well characterized. Objective We aimed to comprehensively assess the relationship between aging and SAD from computed tomography, impulse oscillometry, and spirometry perspectives in Chinese. Methods We included 1859 participants from ECOPD, and used a linear-by-linear association test for evaluating the prevalence of SAD across various age subgroups, and multivariate regression models for determining the impact of age on the risk and severity of SAD. We then repeated the analyses in these subjects stratified by airflow limitation. Results The prevalence of SAD increases over aging regardless of definitional methods. After adjustment for other confounding factors, per 10-yrs increase in age was significantly associated with the risk of CT-defined SAD (OR 2.57, 95% CI 2.13 to 3.10) and the increase in the severity of air trapping (β 2.09, 95% CI − 0.06 to 4.25 for LAA-856), airway reactance (β − 0.02, 95% CI − 0.04 to − 0.01 for X5; β 0.30, 95% CI 0.13 to 0.47 for AX; β 1.75, 95% CI 0.85 to 2.66 for Fres), as well as the decrease in expiratory flow rates (β − 3.95, 95% CI − 6.19 to − 1.71 for MMEF%predicted; β − 5.42, 95% CI − 7.88 to − 2.95 for FEF50%predicted) for SAD. All these associations were generally maintained in SAD defined by IOS or spirometry. After stratification of airflow limitation, we further found that the effect of age on LAA-856 was the most significant among almost all subgroups. Conclusions Aging is significantly associated with the prevalence, increased risk, as well as worse severity of SAD. CT may be a more optimal measure to assess aging-related SAD. The molecular mechanisms for the role of aging in SAD need to be explored in the future. Trial registration Chinese Clinical Trial Registry ChiCTR1900024643. Registered on 19 July 2019

Purpose: The aim of this study was to explore the acute effects of Blood Flow Restriction Training (BFRT), Whole-Body Vibration (WBV), and BFRT + WBV on the 20 m sprint, muscle activation, and metabolic accumulation in male sprinters.Method: Sixteen male sprinters randomly performed BFRT, WBV, or BFRT + WBV interventions with 72 h intervals. Electromyography (EMG) signals were collected before and during interventions. Fingertip blood was taken before, immediately after, and 15 min after the intervention. 20 m sprint was performed before and 3 min after the intervention.Results: 1) 0–10m and 0–20 m sprint performance were significantly improved after WBV and BFRT + WBV interventions (p < 0.05), 0–20 m sprint performance was significantly improved after all three interventions (p < 0.05), 2) After BFRT + WBV intervention, the EMG amplitude of the vastus lateralis and soleus were significantly improved. Greater increases in EMG activity of the tibialis anterior muscle (p < 0.05)and blood lactate (p < 0.05)were observed following BFRT intervention compared to BFRT + WBV intervention.Conclusion: For sprint performance, BFRT and WBV had similar post-activation enhancement effects to BFRT + WBV, and the metabolic accumulation immediately following the BFRT were higher than that following BFRT + WBV in male sprinters.

ObjectiveThe aim of this bicentric retrospective study was to assess the prognostic value of 18F-FDG PET/CT in patients with esophageal high-grade neuroendocrine carcinoma (NECs).MethodsFrom the database of two centers, 28 patients affected by esophageal high-grade NECs who underwent 18F-FDG PET/CT before treatment were retrospectively reviewed. Metabolic parameters (SUVmax, SUVmean, tumor-to-blood-pool SUV ratio (TBR), tumor-to-liver SUV ratio (TLR), metabolic tumor volume (MTV), total lesion glycolysis (TLG)) of the primary tumor were measured. Univariate and multivariate analyses were performed for progression-free survival (PFS) and overall survival (OS).ResultsAfter a median follow-up period of 22 months, disease progression occurred in 11 (39.3%) patients, and death occurred in 8 (28.6%) patients. The median PFS was 34 months, and the median OS was not reached. Univariate analyses revealed that among metabolic parameters, only MTV and TLG were significant prognostic factors, while among clinical variables, only distant metastasis was a significant factor for both PFS and OS (P< 0.05). On multivariate analyses, MTV and TLG were independent prognostic factors for both PFS and OS (P< 0.05).ConclusionsIn patients with esophageal high-grade NEC, MTV and TLG measured on pretreatment 18F-FDG PET/CT are independently prognostic factors for predicting PFS and OS, and might be used as quantitative prognostic imaging biomarkers.

IntroductionIn grassland ecosystems dominated by asexual plants, the maintenance, renewal, and resistance of plant populations to disturbance are more dependent on the belowground bud bank (BBB). However, the response of the BBB to environmental factors in the alpine grassland of the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau (QTP) is still unknown.MethodsTherefore, a transect survey was conducted to measure the size and scale of BBB and 21 factors in the alpine grassland of the QTP. In addition, the critical driving factors of BBB were screened by boost regression tree analysis, and a structural equation model (SEM) was employed to express the path coefficients of the key factors on the BBB size.ResultsThe results showed that BBB size had no significant geographical pattern in the QTP, and the BBB size was mainly accounted for by soil leucine aminopeptidase (LAP, 17.32%), followed by Margalef and Shannon -Wiener indices of plants (12.63% and 9.24%, respectively), and precipitation (9.23%). SEM further indicated significant positive effects of plant diversity (scored at 0.296) and precipitation (scored at 0.180) on BBB size, and a significant negative effect of LAP (scored at 0.280) on BBB size.DiscussionGenerally, the findings allow for better understanding of the regulated mechanisms of BBB size and the importance of the role of bud bank in the restoration of the grassland ecosystem.

Abstract Background The lack of simple and affordable spirometry has led to the missed and delayed diagnoses of chronic respiratory diseases in communities. The PUS201P is a portable spirometry developed to solve this problem. Objective We aimed to verify the consistency of the PUS201P spirometer with conventional Jaeger spirometer. Methods In this cross-sectional study, we randomly recruited 202 subjects aged > 40 years. Testing with the portable spirometry and conventional spirometry were performed on all participants. We compared forced expiratory volume in one second (FEV1), forced vital capacity (FVC), FEV1/FVC measured by the PUS201P device with the conventional spirometer. Pearson correlation coefficient and Interclass Correlation Coefficient (ICC) were assessed to confirm the consistency of the measures from two instruments. Bland–Altman graph was created to assess the agreement of the measures from two devices. Results 202 participants were included in this study. The ICC on FEV1, FVC, FEV1/FVC measured by the portable spirometer and the conventional spirometer were 0.95 (95% confidence interval [CI]: 0.94–0.96), 0.92 (95% CI: 0.90–0.94], 0.93 (95% CI: 0.91–0.95), respectively. The Bland–Altman plots showed that the mean difference between the measures from two spirometers are always located in the 95% limits of agreement. Conclusions Our results support that the measures from the portable spirometer and the conventional spirometer have a good agreement and reproducibility. And the portable spirometer is a reliable tool to screen and diagnose chronic airway diseases in the primary care settings.

In this study, a multi-objective optimized mathematical model of stand pre-allocation is constructed with the shortest travel distance for passengers, the lowest cost for airlines and the efficiency of stand usage as the overall objectives. The actual data of 12 flights at Lanzhou Zhongchuan Airport are analyzed by application and solved by simulated annealing algorithm. The results of the study show that the total objective function of the constructed model allocation scheme is reduced by 40.67% compared with the actual allocation scheme of the airport, and the distance traveled by passengers is reduced by a total of 4512 steps, while one stand is saved and the efficiency of stand use is increased by 31%, in addition to the reduction of airline cost by 300 RMB. In summary, the model constructed in the study has a high practical application value and is expected to be used for airport stand pre-allocation decision in the future.

Functional trait-based plant ecology is often used to study plant survival strategies and growth processes. In this work, the variation regularity of functional traits and their correlations were studied in Abies georgei var. smithii seedlings of different seedling ages found along the altitude gradient (3,800–4,400 m) in Sejila Mountain, Southeast Tibet. The following functional traits of seedlings in five age classes were determined: above-ground functional traits∼leaf thickness (T), leaf area (LA), specific leaf area (SLA), and leaf dry matter content (LDMC); below-ground functional traits∼specific stem length (SSL), specific root length (SRL), specific root surface area (SRA), root tissue density (RTD), and root dry matter content (RDMC). Results showed that (1) except for LDMC, most of the functional traits of the seedlings at different altitudes showed a regular change trend over time. The changes in traits caused by seedling age had significant effects on other traits (p < 0.05). Altitude only had significant effects on T, LA, SLA, SRA, RTD, and RDMC (p < 0.05). (2) The correlation between the above- and below-ground traits was more significant in 5-6-year-old seedlings than in other age classes (p < 0.05). Principal component analysis (PCA) results showed that LA and SLA were the dominant traits of fir seedlings in five age categories Pearson correlation analysis indicated a correlation between RTD and above-ground traits, thus validating the correlation between the above- and below-ground traits of seedlings of Abies georgei var. smithii of different ages. (3) Available potassium, total potassium, and total organic carbon (TOC) had the greatest influence on the traits of 5-6-year-old seedlings. This study revealed that the functional traits of Abies georgei var. smithii seedlings at different altitudesdynamically change with seedling age. The findings help in understanding the growth strategies of seedlings during early development. Future research on the combination of soil factors and seedling traits will provide a theoretical basis for artificial cultivation and protection of native vegetation.

Drought and nutrient deficiency pose great challenges to the successful establishment of native plants on the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau. The dominant factors and strategies that affect the adaptation of alpine herbs to dry and nutrient-deficient environments remain unclear. Three water gradients were established using two-factor controlled experiments: low water (WL), medium water (WM), and high water (WH). The field water-holding capacities were 35%, 55%, and 75%, respectively. Nitrogen fertilizer (N) was applied at four levels: control (CK), low (FL), medium (FM), and high (FH) at 0, 110, 330, and 540 mg/kg, respectively. The results revealed that N was the main limiting factor, rather than phosphorous (P), in Festuca coelestis under drought stress. Under water shortage conditions, F. coelestis accumulated more proline and non-structural carbohydrates, especially in the aboveground parts of the leaves and stems; however, the root diameter and aboveground nitrogen use efficiency were reduced. Appropriate N addition could mitigate the adverse effects by increasing the release of N, P, and enzyme activity in the bulk soil and rhizosphere to balance their ratio, and was mainly transferred to the aboveground parts, which optimized the supply uptake relationship. The effects of water and fertilizer on the physiological adaptability and nutrient utilization of F. coelestis were verified using structural equation modeling. Based on their different sensitivities to water and nitrogen, the WHFM treatment was more suitable for F. coelestis establishment. Our results demonstrated that the disproportionate nutrient supply ability and preferential supply aboveground compared to below ground were the main factors influencing F. coelestis seedling establishment under drought conditions. This study provides evidence for a better understanding of herbaceous plants living in high mountain regions and offers important information for reducing the risk of ecological restoration failure in similar alpine regions.

Background and objective: Spirometry is commonly used to assess small airway dysfunction (SAD). Impulse oscillometry (IOS) can complement spirometry. However, discordant spirometry and IOS in the diagnosis of SAD were not uncommon. We examined the association between spirometry and IOS within a large cohort of subjects to identify variables that may explain discordant spirometry and IOS findings.Methods: 1,836 subjects from the ECOPD cohort underwent questionnaires, symptom scores, spirometry, and IOS, and 1,318 subjects were examined by CT. We assessed SAD with R5-R20 > the upper limit of normal (ULN) by IOS and two of the three spirometry indexes (maximal mid-expiratory flow (MMEF), forced expiratory flow (FEF)50%, and FEF75%) < 65% predicted. Multivariate regression analysis was used to analyze factors associated with SAD diagnosed by only spirometry but not IOS (spirometry-only SAD) and only IOS but not spirometry (IOS-only SAD), and line regression was used to assess CT imaging differences.Results: There was a slight agreement between spirometry and IOS in the diagnosis of SAD (kappa 0.322, p < 0.001). Smoking status, phlegm, drug treatment, and family history of respiratory disease were factors leading to spirometry-only SAD. Spirometry-only SAD had more severe emphysema and gas-trapping than IOS-only SAD in abnormal lung function. However, in normal lung function subjects, there was no statistical difference in emphysema and gas-trapping between discordant groups. The number of IOS-only SAD was nearly twice than that of spirometry.Conclusion: IOS may be more sensitive than spirometry in the diagnosis of SAD in normal lung function subjects. But in patients with abnormal lung function, spirometry may be more sensitive than IOS to detect SAD patients with clinical symptoms and CT lesions.

ZIP8 is a newly identified manganese transporter. A lack of functional ZIP8 results in severe manganese deficiency in both humans and mice, indicating that ZIP8 plays a crucial role in maintaining body manganese homeostasis. Despite a well-acknowledged connection between ZIP8 and manganese metabolism, how ZIP8 is regulated under high-manganese conditions remains unclear. The primary goal of this study was to examine the regulation of ZIP8 by high-manganese intake. We used both neonatal and adult mouse models in which mice were supplied with dietary sources containing either a normal or a high level of manganese. We discovered that high-manganese intake caused a reduction in liver ZIP8 protein in young mice. Since a decrease in hepatic ZIP8 leads to reduced manganese reabsorption from the bile, our study identified a novel mechanism for the regulation of manganese homeostasis under high-manganese conditions: high dietary manganese intake results in a decrease in ZIP8 in the liver, which in turn decreases the reabsorption of manganese from the bile to prevent manganese overload in the liver. Interestingly, we found that a high-manganese diet did not cause a decrease in hepatic ZIP8 in adult animals. To determine the potential reason for this age-dependent variation, we compared the expressions of liver ZIP8 in 3-week-old and 12-week-old mice. We found that liver ZIP8 protein content in 12-week-old mice decreases when compared with that of 3-week-old mice under normal conditions. Overall, results from this study provide novel insights to facilitate the understanding of ZIP8’s function in regulating manganese metabolism.

Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a chronic, systemic immune disease that causes joint affection and even disability. Activated macrophages play an important role in the pathogenesis and progression of RA by producing pro-inflammatory factors. The use of dexamethasone (DXM) is effective in relieving the intractable pain and inflammatory progression of RA. However, long-term use of DXM is strongly associated with increased rates of diabetes, osteoporosis, bone fractures, and mortality, which hinders its clinical use. In this study, the dextran sulfate-cisaconitic anhydride-dexamethasone (DXM@DS-cad-DXM) micelles were prepared to treat RA by selectively recognizing scavenger receptor (SR) on the activated macrophages. The potent targeting property of DXM@DS-cad-DXM micelles to SR was by fluorescence microscope. Additionally, the effective accumulation and powerful anti-inflammatory activity of DXM@DS-cad-DXM micelles were observed in the inflamed joints of adjuvant-induced arthritis (AIA) rats after intravenous administration. Overall, DXM@DS-cad-DXM micelles are a potentially effective nanomedicine for targeted therapy of RA.

Lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer-related deaths worldwide and in China. Screening for lung cancer by low dose computed tomography (LDCT) can reduce mortality but has resulted in a dramatic rise in the incidence of indeterminate pulmonary nodules, which presents a major diagnostic challenge for clinicians regarding their underlying pathology and can lead to overdiagnosis. To address the significant gap in evaluating pulmonary nodules, we conducted a prospective study to develop a prediction model for individuals at intermediate to high risk of developing lung cancer. Univariate and multivariate logistic analyses were applied to the training cohort (n = 560) to develop an early lung cancer prediction model. The results indicated that a model integrating clinical characteristics (age and smoking history), radiological characteristics of pulmonary nodules (nodule diameter, nodule count, upper lobe location, malignant sign at the nodule edge, subsolid status), artificial intelligence analysis of LDCT data, and liquid biopsy achieved the best diagnostic performance in the training cohort (sensitivity 89.53%, specificity 81.31%, area under the curve [AUC] = 0.880). In the independent validation cohort (n = 168), this model had an AUC of 0.895, which was greater than that of the Mayo Clinic Model (AUC = 0.772) and Veterans’ Affairs Model (AUC = 0.740). These results were significantly better for predicting the presence of cancer than radiological features and artificial intelligence risk scores alone. Applying this classifier prospectively may lead to improved early lung cancer diagnosis and early treatment for patients with malignant nodules while sparing patients with benign entities from unnecessary and potentially harmful surgery.Clinical Trial Registration NumberChiCTR1900026233, URL: http://www.chictr.org.cn/showproj.aspx?proj=43370.

In order to study the influence of bedding structure on the mechanical properties of rock mass structure, this paper takes the layered carbonaceous slate in the Muzhailing tunnel as the research object, and studies the mechanical properties of layered slate under uniaxial compression and Brazilian splitting. In the numerical simulation, the discrete element software MUSEN (bonded particle model, BPM) is used to simulate the failure behavior of layered rock mass in the process of quasi-static compression. The main research contents of this paper are as follows: (1) the relationship between the microscopic Young’s modulus and the macroscopic Young’s modulus. (2) Influence of tangential shear strength and normal tensile strength on particle model. (3) The influence of different particle distributions on the simulation results. (4) The particle model with different bedding inclinations was simulated numerically. Through the comparative analysis of simulation and experiment, the results show that the mechanical response and failure mode have good consistency, and the splitting evolution process of layered slate with different bedding inclination angles is reproduced.

BackgroundChronic bronchitis in patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is associated with poor respiratory health outcomes. However, controversy exists around whether non-obstructive chronic bronchitis (NOCB) is associated with airflow obstruction, lung function decline, and all-cause mortality in ever smoker or never smoker.Research QuestionThis systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to clarify the relationship between NOCB and incident COPD, lung function decline, and all-cause mortality, and to quantify the magnitude of these associations.Study Design and MethodsWe searched PubMed, Embase, and Web of Science for studies published up to October 1, 2021. Eligibility screening, data extraction, and quality assessment of the retrieved articles were conducted independently by two reviewers. Studies were included if they were original articles comparing incident COPD, lung function decline, and all-cause mortality in normal spirometry with and without chronic bronchitis. The primary outcomes were incident COPD and all-cause mortality. The secondary outcomes were respiratory disease-related mortality and lung function decline. Pooled effect sizes and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were calculated using the random-effects model.ResultsWe identified 17,323 related references and included 14 articles. Compared with individuals without NOCB, individuals with NOCB had an increased risk of incident COPD (odds ratio: 1.98, 95% CI: 1.21–3.22, I2 = 76.3% and relative risk: 1.44, 95%CI: 1.13–1.85, I2 = 56.1%), all-cause mortality (hazard ratio [HR]: 1.38, 95%CI: 1.26–1.51, I2 = 29.4%), and respiratory disease-related mortality (HR: 1.88, 95%CI: 1.37–2.59, I2 = 0.0%). Data on the decline in lung function could not be quantitatively synthesized, but the five articles that assessed the rate of decline in lung function showed that lung function declines faster in individuals with NOCB. The mean difference in the additional decline in forced expiratory volume in 1 s ranged from 3.6 to 23.2 mL/year.InterpretationIndividuals with NOCB are at a higher risk of incident COPD and all-cause mortality than individuals without NOCB, highlighting the crucial need for strategies to screen for and reduce NOCB risk.Systematic Review Registrationhttps://www.crd.york.ac.uk/PROSPERO/ PROSPERO, identifier CRD42020202837

Enrichment of trace bioactive constituents and metabolites from complex biological samples is challenging. This study presented a one-pot synthesis of magnetic polydopamine nanoparticles (Fe3O4@SiO2@PDA NPs) with multiple recognition sites for the magnetic dispersive solid-phase extraction (MDSPE) of ginsenosides from rat plasma treated with white ginseng. The extracted ginsenosides were characterized by combining an ultra-high-performance liquid chromatography coupled to a high-resolution mass spectrometry with supplemental UNIFI libraries. Response surface methodology was statistically used to optimize the extraction procedure of the ginsenosides. The reusability of Fe3O4@SiO2@PDA NPs was also examined and the results showed that the recovery rate exceeded 80% after recycling 6 times. Furthermore, the proposed method showed greater enrichment efficiency and could rapidly determine and characterize 23 ginsenoside prototypes and metabolites from plasma. In comparison, conventional methanol method can only detect 8 ginsenosides from the same plasma samples. The proposed approach can provide methodological reference for the trace determination and characterization of different bioactive ingredients and metabolites of traditional Chinese medicines and food. (1) Purpose: This study aimed to explore the time duration of post-activation performance enhancement (PAPE) in elite male sprinters with different strength levels. (2) Methods: Thirteen elite male sprinters were divided into a strong group (relative strength: 1RM squat normalized by body mass of ≥2.5; n = 6) and a weak group (relative strength of n = 7). All sprinters performed one static squat jump (SSJ) at baseline and 15 s, 3 min, 6 min, 9 min, and 12 min following an exercise protocol including three reps of a 90% 1RM back squat. Two force plates were used to determine the vertical jump height, the impulse output, and the power output for all SSJs. (3) Results: Significant improvements in vertical jump height and peak impulse were observed (p < 0.05) at 3, 6, and 9 min, without significant between-group differences. The peak power had a significant increase in 3 min (p < 0.01) and 6 min (p < 0.05), with also no significant difference between-group differences. Moreover, the stronger subjects induced a greater PAPE effect than the weaker counterparts at 3, 6, and 9 min after the intervention. The maximal benefit following the intervention occurred at 6 min and 3 min after the intervention in the stronger and weaker subjects, respectively. (4) Conclusions: The findings indicated that three reps of a 90% 1RM back squat augmented the subsequent explosive movement (SSJ) for 3–9 min in elite male sprinters, especially in stronger sprinters.

Reseeding with native plants to rebuild alpine meadow has become a popular way of ecological restoration. However, the harsh environment poses a great challenge to the establishment of native plants due to poor management of water and nutrients. How water–fertilizer interaction influences dominant grass species is still unclear, and reasonable water and fertilizer conditions are still not determined. Our results showed that addition of nitrogen could mitigate the photosynthetic and water-use traits caused by water stress, i.e., a reduction in Pn and water use results from fewer and thinner leaves, weak stomatal traits, etc. Compared to the control, the peak Pn values of Poa crymophila, Festuca coelestis, and Stipa purpurea increased significantly (71.2%, 108.4%, and 25.4%, respectively). Under drought stress, Pn tended to decrease due to reduced stomatal conductance (Gs). However, appropriate fertilization buffered against Pn decreases by altering the stomatal size and regulating the Gs. Based on reduced water consumption, the water-use efficiency of P. crymophila and F. coelestis decreased whereas that of S. purpurea increased. WHFH for P. crymophila and F. coelestis and WHFL for S. purpurea growth were suitable for the alpine region. WHFH for P. crymophila and F. coelestis and WHFL for S. purpurea were suitable for their establishment in the alpine region. A reasonable water–fertilizer combination could effectively reduce the risk of establishment failure in ecological restoration.

ABSTRACT Microneme proteins (MICs) of Eimeria tenella play key roles in motility, migration, attachment, and invasion processes. More than 20 apicomplexan parasite’s MICs have been identified, with nine Eimeria MICs being reported. In this study, a novel E. tenella MIC was identified, and its gene structural features, developmental expression levels, localization, role in adhesion and invasion, and immunogenicity were studied. The results showed that the open reading frame was 1,650 bp, encoding 550 amino acids. It contains a signal sequence, a transmembrane region, four low-complexity boxes, and five epidermal growth factor-like domains (EGF). Subcellular localization revealed its distribution on the membrane surface of the parasite. These characteristics are consistent with the common features of MICs and are named EtMIC8. Anti-EtMIC8 antibodies recognized a specific binding of about 100 kDa in E. tenella, which was twice as large as the prokaryotic expression (about 50 kDa), suggesting that MIC8 may exist naturally as a dimer. EtMIC8 was expressed at higher levels in sporozoites (3.08-fold) and merozoites (2.1-fold) than in sporulated oocysts. The attachment assays using a yeast surface display of MIC8 and its different domains showed that the adherence rates of EtMIC8 to host cells were significantly higher than those of the control (3.17-fold), which was the full contribution of EGF, but neither was alone. Glioblastoma multiforme (GBM) is the most common brain malignancy and major cause of high mortality in patients with GBM, and its high recurrence rate is its most prominent feature. However, the pathobiological mechanisms involved in recurrent GBM remain largely unknown. Here, whole-transcriptome sequencing (RNA-sequencing, RNA-Seq) was used in characterizing the expression profile of recurrent GBM, and the aim was to identify crucial biomarkers that contribute to GBM relapse. Differentially expressed RNAs in three recurrent GBM tissues compared with three primary GBM tissues were identified through RNA-Seq. The function and mechanism of a candidate long noncoding RNA (lncRNA) in the progression and recurrence of GBM were elucidated by performing comprehensive bioinformatics analyses, such as functional enrichment analysis, protein–protein interaction prediction, and lncRNA–miRNA–mRNA regulatory network construction, and a series of in vitro assays. As the most significantly upregulated gene identified in recurrent GBM, HSPA1A is mainly related to antigen presentation and the MAPK signaling pathway, as indicated by functional enrichment analysis. HSPA1A was predicted as the target gene of the lncRNA NONHSAT079852.2. qRT-PCR revealed that NONHSAT079852.2 was significantly elevated in recurrent GBM relative to that in primary GBM, and high NONHSAT079852.2 expression was associated with the poor overall survival rates of patients with GBM. The knockdown of NONHSAT079852.2 successfully induced tumor cell apoptosis, inhibited the proliferation, migration, invasion and the expression level of HSPA1A in glioma cells. NONHSAT079852.2 was identified to be a sponge for hsa-miR-10401-3p through luciferase reporter assay. Moreover, HSPA1A was targeted and regulated by hsa-miR-10401-3p. Collectively, the results suggested that NONHSAT079852.2 acts as a sponge of hsa-mir-10401-3p and thereby enhances HSPA1A expression, promotes tumor cell proliferation and invasion, and leads to the progression and recurrence of GBM. This study will provide new insight into the regulatory mechanisms of NONHSAT079852.2-mediated competing endogenous RNA in the pathogenesis of recurrent GBM and evidence of the potential of lncRNAs as diagnostic biomarkers or potential therapeutic targets.

The intercropping of arsenic (As) hyperaccumulator Chinese brake fern (Pterisvittata L.) with maize (Zea mays L.) is being widely utilized to enhance phytoremediation without impeding agricultural production. Arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) fungi can regulate the physiological and molecular responses of plants in tolerating heavy metal stress. We studied the effects of inoculation with AM fungi on As uptake by maize and P. vittata grown in soil contaminated with As. The results show that infection with the fungus Claroideoglomus etunicatum (Ce) increased the biomass of maize and P. vittata. Moreover, infection with Ce significantly reduced the accumulation of As and the coefficient for root–shoot transport of As in maize, whereas it enhanced the accumulation of As and coefficient for root–shoot transport of As in P. vittata. Infection with Ce led to a high content of available As in the soil planted with P. vittata, while there was a lower content of available As in the soil planted with maize. The different concentrations of available As in the soils suggest that inoculation with Ce may enhance the secretion of organic acids, particularly citric acid and tartaric acid, by maize roots and promote rhizosphere acidification, which then causes a decrease in As uptake by maize. Inoculation with Ce decreased the secretion of citric acid from P. vittata and promoted rhizosphere alkalization, which then caused an increase in As uptake by P. vittata and maize. Thus, co-combining AM fungi in the intercropping of the hyperaccumulator P. vittata with maize could be a promising approach to improving the efficiency of remediating As-contaminated soil.

Rhoptry proteins (ROPs) of Apicomplexa are crucial secreted virulence factors and sources of vaccine candidates. To date, Eimeria tenella ROPs are not well studied. This study identified and characterized a novel E. tenella ROP (EtROP35), which showed the highest levels among 28 putative ROPs in previous sporozoite and merozoite transcriptomes. Sequence analysis showed that EtROP35 contains an N-terminal secretory signal and a protein kinase domain including eight conserved ROP35-subfamily motifs. Subsequent experiments confirmed that it is a secretory protein. Subcellular localization revealed it localized at the apical end of the sporozoites and merozoites, which was consistent with the ROPs of other Apicomplexan parasites. To further understand the biological meaning of EtROP35, expression levels in different developmental stages and sporozoite invasion-blocking assay were investigated. EtROP35 showed significantly higher levels in sporozoites (6.23-fold) and merozoites (7.00-fold) than sporulated oocysts. Sporozoite invasion-blocking assay revealed that anti-EtROP35 polyclonal antibody significantly reduced the sporozoite invasion rate, suggesting it might participate in host cell invasion and be a viable choice as a vaccine candidate. The immunological protective assays showed that EtROP35 could induce a high level of serum IgY and higher mean body weight gain, and lower cecum lesion score and oocysts excretion than the challenged control group. These data indicated that EtROP35 had good immunogenicity and may be a promising vaccine candidate against E. tenella.

Pseudorabies virus (PRV) has evolved various strategies to escape host antiviral immune responses. However, it remains unclear whether and how PRV-encoded proteins modulate the RIG-I-like receptor (RLR)-mediated signals for immune evasion. Here, we show that the PRV tegument protein UL13 functions as an antagonist of RLR-mediated antiviral responses via suppression of the transcription of RIG-I and MDA5, but not LGP2. UL13 overexpression significantly inhibits both the mRNA and protein levels of RIG-I and MDA5, along with RIG-I- or MDA5-mediated antiviral immune responses, whereas overexpression of RIG-I or MDA5 counteracts such UL13-induced suppression. Mechanistically, UL13 suppresses the expression of RIG-I and MDA5 by inhibiting activation of the transcription factor NF-κB. Consequently, overexpression of p65 promotes the activation of RIG-I and MDA5 promoters. Moreover, deletion of the p65-binding sites in the promoters of RIG-I or MDA5 abolishes the suppression role of UL13. As a result, mutant PRV lacking UL13 elicits stronger host antiviral immune responses than PRV-WT. Hence, our results provide a novel functional role of UL13-induced suppression of host antiviral immunity through modulating receptors’ transcription.

ZIP14 is a newly identified manganese transporter with high levels of expression in the small intestine and the liver. Loss-of-function mutations in ZIP14 can lead to systemic manganese overload, which primarily affects the central nervous system, causing neurological disorders. To elucidate the roles of intestinal ZIP14 and hepatic ZIP14 in maintaining systemic manganese homeostasis, we generated mice with single-tissue or two-tissue Zip14 knockout, including intestine-specific (Zip14-In-KO), liver-specific (Zip14-L-KO), and double (intestine and liver) Zip14-knockout (Zip14-DKO) mice. Zip14flox/flox mice were used as the control. Tissue manganese contents in these mice were compared using inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) analysis. We discovered that although the deletion of intestinal ZIP14 only moderately increased systemic manganese loading, the deletion of both intestinal and hepatic ZIP14 greatly exacerbated the body’s manganese burden. Our results provide new knowledge to further the understanding of manganese metabolism, and offer important insights into the mechanisms underlying systemic manganese overload caused by the loss of ZIP14.

Cerebrovascular diseases mainly affect the blood supply of the brain, which has a high demand for oxygen and glucose for the nerve tissues to perform its nerve functions. Ischemic cerebrovascular disease can not only cause stroke, but is also associated with a high incidence of asymptomatic infarction and minimal bleeding that can lead to cognitive and behavioral changes. These changes ultimately manifest as vascular dementia or cognitive impairment. In clinical settings, ischemic cerebrovascular disease can be classified as a transient ischemic attack, reversible ischemic neurological deficit, progressive stroke, complete stroke, marginal infarction, or lacunar infarction. In this review, the research progress of imaging technologies for ischemic cerebrovascular diseases was reviewed, with an aim to provide evidence for clinical practitioners.

A novel material named Fe/Mn-C layered double hydroxide composite (Fe/Mn-C-LDH) was synthesized to remove arsenic from an aqueous solution. The removal performance of the composite toward arsenic ions was studied through the batch experiments. The experiment results showed that Fe/Mn-C-LDH exhibited a high adsorption capacity of 46.47 mg/g for As(III) and 37.84 mg/g for As(V) at 318 K, respectively. In addition, the investigation of the release of Fe3+ and Mn2+ in the process of arsenic adsorption revealed that the Fe/Mn-C-LDH exhibited better stability than Fe/Mn-layer double hydroxide (Fe/Mn-LDH) with fewer Mn2+ and Fe3+ releasing under the same condition. The BET results showed that the specific surface area of Fe/Mn-C-LDH decreased after adsorption of As (III) and As (V). Furthermore, the Density Functional Theory (DFT) calculation results proved that the adsorbent combining arsenic by T-site to produce a better adsorption effect for arsenic. Possessing better stability and adsorption capacity, Fe/Mn-C-LDH could potentially serve as a perfect adsorbent for arsenic removal from an aqueous environment. It would provide a promising approach for removing heavy metal from the aquatic environment in the future.

Aircraft surface taxiing conflict avoidance is mostly adopted by waiting and rerouting methods, but this method does not consider the difference in total taxiing time that may be caused by different strategies. In this study, the airport taxiing path optimization model and taxiing area division model are constructed first. Then, the taxiway use is controlled by subregion based on the analysis of the surface activity area connection relationship. Based on the results of aircraft surface taxiway preselection, the time window of the taxiing area is solved and conflict detection is performed. For aircraft with taxiing conflicts, waiting or changing paths is selected to deconflict taxiing by comparing priorities. An improved A∗ algorithm solution is applied to generate conflict-free glide paths and new glide trajectory occupancy time windows, while the glide paths of aircraft without glide conflicts are not affected. The results of the study show that the use of time windows for conflict detection and deconfliction can further reduce the total taxiing time of aircraft operating on the surface, resulting in a significant reduction in the number of aircraft conflicts, and thus, airport operational safety is ensured. This study has a high practical value and is expected to be applied in the real-time control decision of aircraft taxiing in the future.

In Chinese schools, classes are organized with special monitors and teachers contributing to the achievement goal structure for students. This study aimed to examine the psychometric properties of perception of teachers’ achievement goal structure constructs with 3,149 Chinese students from grades 3–8. The results showed that the internal consistencies of the whole scale and subscales were low to marginal. Eight models were examined to check the constructs of the achievement goal structure (mastery, performance, and performance avoidance). Two-factor structures proved to be the best fit. Additionally, a multilevel confirmatory factor analysis proved that the achievement goal structure existed at the same time in the class student levels. Our findings supported the hypothesis that achievement goal structures are different for students with different cultures, which implies that teaching approaches should be adapted in consideration of culturally distinct learning.

Obesity has become an urgent and serious public health challenge with an overwhelming increase over the decades worldwide. The rate of obese children and adolescents has recently accelerated, especially in China. Obesity is closely related to unbalanced cellular energy metabolism. Mitochondria, as the main organelles of energy metabolism, play an important role in the pathophysiology of obesity. Recent researches have revealed that mitochondrial dynamics with constant fission and fusion, can alter mitochondrial structure, organelle connections, ROS production, neuronal activity, and OXPHOS system as well as adipose tissue thermogenesis, which ultimately lead to obesity. In this review, we will update the latest findings about mitochondrial fission/fusion related GTPase proteins and discuss the effects of mitochondrial dynamics in the pathophysiology of obesity.

Cognitive diagnostic assessment (CDA) is able to obtain information regarding the student’s cognitive and knowledge development based on the psychometric model. Notably, most of previous studies use traditional cognitive diagnosis models (CDMs). This study aims to compare the traditional CDM and the longitudinal CDM, namely, the hidden Markov model (HMM)/artificial neural network (ANN) model. In this model, the ANN was applied as the measurement model of the HMM to realize the longitudinal tracking of students’ cognitive skills. This study also incorporates simulation as well as empirical studies. The results illustrate that the HMM/ANN model obtains high classification accuracy and a correct conversion rate when the number of attributes is small. The combination of ANN and HMM assists in effectively tracking the development of students’ cognitive skills in real educational situations. Moreover, the classification accuracy of the HMM/ANN model is affected by the quality of items, the number of items as well as by the number of attributes examined, but not by the sample size. The classification result and the correct transition probability of the HMM/ANN model were improved by increasing the item quality and the number of items along with decreasing the number of attributes.

Glioma is the most common and aggressive tumor of the central nervous system. The uncontrolled proliferation, cellular heterogeneity, and diffusive capacity of glioma cells contribute to a very poor prognosis of patients with high grade glioma. Compared to normal cells, cancer cells exhibit a higher rate of glucose uptake, which is accompanied with the metabolic switch from oxidative phosphorylation to aerobic glycolysis. The metabolic reprogramming of cancer cell supports excessive cell proliferation, which are frequently mediated by the activation of oncogenes or the perturbations of tumor suppressor genes. Recently, a growing body of evidence has started to reveal that long noncoding RNAs (lncRNAs) are implicated in a wide spectrum of biological processes in glioma, including malignant phenotypes and aerobic glycolysis. However, the mechanisms of diverse lncRNAs in the initiation and progression of gliomas remain to be fully unveiled. In this review, we summarized the diverse roles of lncRNAs in shaping the biological features and aerobic glycolysis of glioma. The thorough understanding of lncRNAs in glioma biology provides opportunities for developing diagnostic biomarkers and novel therapeutic strategies targeting gliomas.
