We report on triggering of p(NIPAM-AA) microgels’ photo-responsiveness by making complexes with a spiropyran (SP) containing surfactant. Being dissolved in water, the SP surfactant in its merocyanine state bears three charges, while irradiation with UV and vis light leads to the partial or complete reversal of the SP state. The complexation of the photo-responsive amphiphile with swollen anionic microgels results in charge compensation within the gel interior and as a consequence its size reduces and the volume phase transition temperature (VPTT) decreases down to 32 °C. Under irradiation the MC form photo-isomerizes to a ring closed SP state generating a more hydrophobic surfactant with one positive charge at the head. The increase in the hydrophobicity of the surfactant and thus of the interior of the gel results in the reversible size change of the microgel. We investigate the photo-responsivity of the microgel as a function of wavelength and irradiation intensity, as well as of surfactant concentration and charge density of the microgel. We show that the change in the size and VPTT of the microgels during irradiation occurs through a combination of two processes: heating of the solution during light absorption by the surfactant (more pronounced in the case of UV irradiation) and the change in the hydrophobicity of the surfactant.

Here we show that microgels trapped at a solid wall can issue liquid flow and transport over distances several times larger than the particle size. The microgel consists of cross-linked poly(N-isopropylacrylamide-co-acrylic acid) (PNIPAM-AA) polymer chains loaded with cationic azobenzene-containing surfactant, which can assume either a trans- or a cis-state depending on the wavelength of the applied irradiation. The microgel, being a selective absorber of trans-isomers, responds by changing its volume under irradiation with light of appropriate wavelength at which the cis-isomers of the surfactant molecules diffuse out of the particle interior. Together with the change in particle size, the expelled cis-isomers form an excess of the concentration and subsequent gradient in osmotic pressure generating a halo of local light-driven diffusioosmotic (l-LDDO) flow. The direction and the strength of the l-LDDO depends on the intensity and irradiation wavelength, as well as on the amount of surfactant absorbed by the microgel. The flow pattern around a microgel is directed radially outward and can be maintained quasi-indefinitely under exposure to blue light when the trans-/cis-ratio is 2/1, establishing a photostationary state. Irradiation with UV light, on the other hand, generates a radially transient flow pattern, which inverts from inward to outward over time at low intensities. By measuring the displacement of tracer particles around neutral microgels during a temperature-induced collapse, we can exclude that a change in particle shape itself causes the flow, i.e., just by expulsion or uptake of water. Ultimately, it is its ability to selectively absorb two isomers of photosensitive surfactant under different irradiation conditions that leads to an effective pumping caused by a self-induced diffusioosmotic flow.

Photosensitive azobenzene-containing surfactants have attracted great attention in past years because they offer a means to control soft-matter transformations with light. At concentrations higher than the critical micelle concentration (CMC), the surfactant molecules aggregate and form micelles, which leads to a slowdown of the photoinduced trans -> cis azobenzene isomerization. Here, we combine nonadiabatic dynamics simulations for the surfactant molecules embedded in the micelles with absorption spectroscopy measurements of micellar solutions to uncover the reasons responsible for the reaction slowdown. Our simulations reveal a decrease of isomerization quantum yields for molecules inside the micelles. We also observe a reduction of extinction coefficients upon micellization. These findings explain the deceleration of the trans -> cis switching in micelles of the azobenzene-containing surfactants.

Here, we establish different ways of light-triggered droplet manipulation such as reversible wetting, splitting, merging, and transport. The unique features of our approach are that the changes in the wetting properties of microscopic droplets of isotropic (oil) or anisotropic (liquid crystalline) liquids adsorbed on photoswitchable films can be triggered just by application of soft optical stimuli, which lead to dynamical, reversible changes in the local morphology of the structured surfaces. The adaptive films consist of an azobenzene-containing surfactant ionically attached to oppositely charged polymer chains. Flow control is a highly relevant topic for micromanipulation of colloidal particles in microfluidic applications. Here, we report on a system that combines two-surface bound flows emanating from thermo-osmotic and diffusio-osmotic mechanisms. These opposing flows are generated at a gold surface immersed into an aqueous solution containing a photo-sensitive surfactant, which is irradiated by a focused UV laser beam. At low power of incoming light, diffusio-osmotic flow due to local photo-isomerization of the surfactant dominates, resulting in a flow pattern oriented away from the irradiated area. In contrast, thermo-osmotic flow takes over due to local heating of the gold surface at larger power, consequently inducing a flow pointing toward the hotspot. In this way, this system allows one to reversibly switch from outward to inward liquid flow with an intermittent range of zero flow at which tracer particles undergo thermal motion by just tuning the laser intensity only. Our work, thus, demonstrates an optofluidic system for flow generation with a high degree of controllability that is necessary to transport particles precisely to desired locations, thereby opening innovative possibilities to generate advanced microfluidic applications.

The repulsive surface forces, such as electrostatic or steric, acting between particles explain why they remain well separated in aqueous electrolyte solutions and are responsible for the stability of colloidal dispersions. However, the effective range of these interactions is always well below hundreds of nanometers and typically can be controlled by advanced manipulations such as tuning the electrolyte concentration or modifying the particle surface or, in some more specific cases, via subjecting the suspension to an external electric or magnetic field. Here we employ solutions with small additives of a photosensitive ionic surfactant to investigate if a repulsive interaction of microsized particles sedimented at the solid surface can be remotely controlled simply by illuminating it with an appropriate wavelength. We show that interactions of conventional impermeable particles remain practically unaffected by light, but, in contrast, for porous particles, we observe a long-range repulsion, several orders of magnitude longer than any conceivable equilibrium surface force. This repulsion emerges due to the diffusio-osmotic flow generated near the porous particles that in this scenario are playing a role of micropumps. The diffusio-osmotic repulsion of porous particles can be used for a remote control of their two-dimensional assemblies at the solid wall, and in particular, we demonstrate that by simply using two different illumination wavelengths it is possible to reversibly switch the state of porous particle dispersion from densely packed surface aggregates to a periodic lattice of particles separated by distances on the order of tens of micrometers.

In this paper, the phenomenon of light-driven diffusioosmotic (DO) long-range attractive and repulsive interactions between micro-sized objects trapped near a solid wall is investigated. The range of the DO flow extends several times the size of microparticles and can be adjusted to point towards or away from the particle by varying irradiation parameters such as intensity or wavelength of light. The "fuel" of the light-driven DO flow is a photosensitive surfactant which can be photo-isomerized between trans and cis-states. The trans-isomer tends to accumulate at the interface, while the cis-isomer prefers to stay in solution. In combination with a dissimilar photo-isomerization rate at the interface and in bulk, this yields a concentration gradient of the isomers around single particles resulting in local light-driven diffusioosmotic (l-LDDO) flow. Here, the extended analysis of the l-LDDO flow as a function of irradiation parameters by introducing time-dependent development of the concentration excess of isomers near the particle surface is presented. It is also demonstrated that the l-LDDO can be generated at any solid/liquid interface being more pronounced in the case of strongly absorbing material. This phenomenon has plenty of potential applications since it makes any type of surface act as a micropump.

We report on a light-triggered process at which repulsive interactions between microparticles with a polyelectrolyte (PE) brush coating can be remotely controlled. The spherical polyelectrolyte brushes are loaded with photosensitive azobenzene containing surfactant which can undergo reversible photo-isomerization from trans to cis state. The surfactant hydrophilicity is altered by illumination with light of an appropriate wavelength, at which a dynamic exchange of the more surface-active trans isomer in comparison to the more water soluble cis isomer with the PE brush generates a concentration gradient of the cis isomers near a solid surface where the particle is sedimented. In this way, each spherical brush produces its local lateral diffusioosmotic flow pointing outside in a radial direction resulting in mutual long-range repulsive interactions. We demonstrate that a PE layer has a higher tendency to absorb surfactant in comparison to plain silica particles, yielding a larger flow strength. This correlation holds true up to a critical intensity, where the dynamic exchange is adsorption limited with respect to trans isomers and especially pronounced for the PE-coated particles.

Here we report on a light triggered remote control of microgel size in the presence of photosensitive surfactant. The hydrophobic tail of the cationic surfactant contains azobenzene group that undergoes a reversible photo-isomerization reaction from a trans-to a cis-state accompanied by a change in the hydrophobicity of the surfactant. We have investigated light assisted behaviour and the complex formation of the microgels with azobenzene containing surfactant over the broad concentrational range starting far below and exceeding several times of the critical micelle concentration (CMC). At small surfactant concentration in solution (far below CMC), the surfactant in the trans-state accommodates within the microgel causing its compaction, while the cis-isomer desorbs out of microgel resulting in its swelling. The process of the microgel size change can be described as swelling on UV irradiation (trans-cis isomerization) and shrinking on irradiation with blue light (cis-trans isomerization). However, at the surfactant concentrations larger than CMC, the opposite behaviour is observed: the microgel swells on blue irradiation and shrinks during exposure to UV light. We explain this behaviour theoretically taking into account isomer dependent micellization of surfactant within the microgels. Published by AIP Publishing.

Here, we investigate the kinetics of adsorption and desorption of a cationic photosensitive azobenzene-containing surfactant within anionic microgels in the dark and under continuous illumination with light of different wavelengths and show that microgels can serve as a selective absorber of one of the possible isomers of the photosensitive surfactant. The adsorption of the isomer is governed by entropic reasons at which micellization of the surfactant takes place within the microgel matrix composed of cross-linked PNIPAM and anionic poly(acryl acid) chains rendering it photoresponsive. Under irradiation with appropriate wavelength, the surfactant molecules photoisomerize from trans (hydrophobic)- to cis (hydrophilic)-state and the microgel collapses due to diffusion of the cis-isomers out of the particle interior. When the light is switched off, the microgels swell back to the equilibrium size by absorbing the rest of the trans-isomers out of solution with the characteristic time being between a few seconds and hours depending on the amount of the trans-isomers left in the solution. Measuring the kinetics of the microgel size response and knowing the exact isomer composition under light exposure, we calculate the adsorption rate of the trans-isomers. We show that depending on the intensity of the applied light, one can differentiate between two processes, i.e., at low intensities, the kinetics of the size change is mostly dominated by the photoisomerization rate of the surfactant within the interior of the particle, while at larger intensities, the process is limited by the surfactant adsorption/desorption rate. By performing temperature-dependent measurements, we also calculate the activation energy of the adsorption/desorption process.

We report on guided and self-organized motion of ensembles of mesoporous colloidal particles that can undergo dynamic aggregation or separation upon exposure to light. The forces on particles involve the phenomenon of light-driven diffusioosmosis (LDDO) and are hydrodynamic in nature. They can be made to act passively on the ensemble as a whole but also used to establish a mutual interaction between particles. The latter scenario requires a porous colloid morphology such that the particle can act as a source or sink of a photosensitive surfactant, which drives the LDDO process. The interplay between the two modes of operation leads to fascinating possibilities of dynamical organization and manipulation of colloidal ensembles adsorbed at solid-liquid interfaces. While the passive mode can be thought of to allow for a coarse structuring of a cloud of colloids, the inter-particle mode may be used to impose a fine structure on a 2D particle grid. Local flow is used to impose and tailor interparticle interactions allowing for much larger interaction distances that can be achieved with, e.g., DLVO type of forces, and is much more versatile.

We investigate light-induced irreversible structuring of surface topographies in poly(3-sulfopropyl methacrylate/potassium salt) (PSPMK) brushes on flat solid substrates prepared by surface-initiated atom transfer radical polymerization. The brushes have been loaded with azobenzene-based surfactant comprised of positively charged headgroups and hydrophobic tail. The surfactant exhibits photoresponsive properties through photoisomerization from the trans to cis states leading to significant changes in physicochemical properties of grafted polymer chains. The azobenzene surfactant enables photoresponsive behavior without introducing irreversible changes to chemical composition of the parent polymer brush. Exposing these photosensitive brushes to irradiation with UV interference beams causes the polymer brush to form surface relief grating (SRG) patterns. The cationic surfactant penetrates only similar to 25% of the upper portion of the PSPMK brush, resulting in the formation of two sections within the brush: a photoresponsive upper layer and nonfunctional buried layer, which is not affected by the UV irradiation. Using nano-FTIR spectroscopy, we characterize locally the chemical composition of the polymer brush and confirm partial penetration of the surfactant within the film. Strong optomechanical stresses take place only within the upper layer of the brush that is impregnated with the surfactants and causes surface topography alternation due to a local rupture of grafted polymer chains. The cleaved polymer chains are then removed from the surface by using a good solvent, leaving behind topographical grating on top of the nonfunctional brush layer. We demonstrate that photostructured polymer brush can be used for reversible switching of brush topography by varying external humidity.

This joint experimental-theoretical work focuses on molecular and photophysical properties of the spiropyran-containing amphiphilic molecule in organic and aqueous solutions. Being dissolved in tested organic solvents, the system demonstrates positive photochromism, i.e. upon UV stimulus the colorless spiropyran form is transformed into colorful merocyanine isomer. However, aqueous solution of the amphiphile possesses a negative photochromism: the orange-red merocyanine form turns to be thermodynamically more stable in water, and both UV and vis stimuli lead to the partial or complete photobleaching of the solution. The explanation of this phenomenon is given on the basis of density functional theory calculations and classical modeling including thermodynamic integration. The simulations reveal that stabilization of merocyanine in water proceeds with the energy of ca. 70 kJ mol−1, and that the Helmholtz free energy of hydration of merocyanine form is 100 kJ mol−1 lower as compared to the behavior of SP isomer in water. The explanation of such a difference lies in the molecular properties of the merocyanine: after ring-opening reaction this molecule transforms into a zwitterionic form, as evidenced by the electrostatic potential plotted around the opened form. The presence of three charged groups on the periphery of a flat conjugated backbone stimulates the self-assembly of merocyanine molecules in water, ending up with the formation of elongated associates with stack-like building blocks, as shown in molecular dynamics simulations of the aqueous solution with the concentration above critical micelle concentration. Our quantitative evaluation of the hydrophilicity switching in spiropyran/merocyanine containing surfactants may prompt the search for new systems, including colloidal and polymeric ones, aiming at remote tuning of their morphology, which could give new promising shapes and patterns for the needs of modern nanotechnology.

In this paper, we introduce the phenomenon of light driven diffusioosmotic long-range attraction and repulsion of porous particles under irradiation with UV light. The change in the inter-particle interaction potential is governed by flow patterns generated around single colloids and results in reversible aggregation or separation of the mesoporous silica particles that are trapped at a solid surface. The range of the interaction potential extends to several times the diameter of the particle and can be adjusted by varying the light intensity. The "fuel" of the process is a photosensitive surfactant undergoing photo-isomerization from a more hydrophobic trans-state to a rather hydrophilic cis-state. The surfactant has different adsorption affinities to the particles depending on the isomerization state. The trans-isomer, for example, tends to accumulate in the negatively charged pores of the particles, while the cis-isomer prefers to remain in the solution. This implies that when under UV irradiation cis-isomers are being formed within the pores, they tend to diffuse out readily and generate an excess concentration near the colloid's outer surface, ultimately resulting in the initiation of diffusioosmotic flow. The direction of the flow depends strongly on the dynamic redistribution of the fraction of trans- and cis-isomers near the colloids due to different kinetics of photo-isomerization within the pores as compared to the bulk. The unique feature of the mechanism discussed in the paper is that the long-range mutual repulsion but also the attraction can be tuned by convenient external optical stimuli such as intensity so that a broad variety of experimental situations for manipulation of a particle ensemble can be realized.

We consider sedimented at a solid wall particles that are immersed in water containing small additives of photosensitive ionic surfactants. It is shown that illumination with an appropriate wavelength, a beam intensity profile, shape and size could lead to a variety of dynamic, both unsteady and steady-state, configurations of particles. These dynamic, well-controlled and switchable particle patterns at the wall are due to an emerging diffusio-osmotic flow that takes its origin in the adjacent to the wall electrostatic diffuse layer, where the concentration gradients of surfactant are induced by light. The conventional nonporous particles are passive and can move only with already generated flow. However, porous colloids actively participate themselves in the flow generation mechanism at the wall, which also sets their interactions that can be very long ranged. This light-induced diffusio-osmosis opens novel avenues to manipulate colloidal particles and assemble them to various patterns. We show in particular how to create and split optically the confined regions of particles of tunable size and shape, where well controlled flow-induced forces on the colloids could result in their cristalline packing, formation of dilute lattices of well-separated particles, and other states., 11 pages, 14 figures

We report on light-induced deformation of colloidal spheres consisting of azobenzene-containing polymers. The colloids of the size between 60 nm and 2 μm in diameter were drop casted on a glass surface and irradiated with linearly polarized light. It was found that colloidal particles can be deformed up to ca. 6 times of their initial diameter. The maximum degree of deformation depends on the irradiation wavelength and intensity, as well as on colloidal particles size. On the basis of recently proposed theory by Toshchevikov et al. [ J. Phys. Chem. Lett. 2017 , 8 , 1094 ], we calculated the opto-mechanical stresses (ca. 100 MPa) needed for such giant deformations and compared them with the experimental results.

We introduce a versatile mechanism of light-driven self-propelled motion applied to porous Janus-type particles. The mechanism is based on the generation of local light-driven diffusio-osmotic (l-LDDO) flow around each single porous particle subjected to suitable irradiation conditions. The photosensitivity is introduced by a cationic azobenzene containing surfactant, which undergoes a photoisomerization reaction from a more hydrophobic trans-state to a rather hydrophilic cis-state under illumination with light. The negatively charged porous silica particles are dispersed in a corresponding aqueous solution and absorb molecules in their trans-state but expel them in their cis-state. During illumination with blue light triggering both trans-cis and cis-trans isomerization at the same time, the colloids start to move due to the generation of a steady-state diffusive flow of cis-isomers out of and trans-isomers into the particle. This is because a hemi-spherical metal cap partially sealing the colloid breaks the symmetry of the otherwise radially directed local flow around the particle, leading to self-propelled motion. Janus particles exhibit superdiffusive motion with a velocity of ∼0.5 μm/s and a persistence length of ca. 50 μm, confined to microchannels the direction can be maintained up to 300 μm before rotational diffusion reverts it. Particles forming dimers of different shapes can be made to travel along circular trajectories. The unique feature of this mechanism is that the strength of self-propulsion can be tuned by convenient external optical stimuli (intensity and irradiation wavelength) such that a broad variety of experimental situations can be realized in a spatiotemporal way and in situ.We introduce a versatile mechanism of light-driven self-propelled motion applied to porous Janus-type particles. We report on light sensitive microgel particles that can change their volume reversibly in response to illumination with light of different wavelengths. To make the anionic microgels photosensitive we add surfactants with a positively charged polyamine head group and an azobenzene containing tail. Upon illumination, azobenzene undergoes a reversible photo-isomerization reaction from a trans- to a cis-state accompanied by a change in the hydrophobicity of the surfactant. Depending on the isomerization state, the surfactant molecules are either accommodated within the microgel (trans- state) resulting in its shrinkage or desorbed back into water (cis-isomer) letting the microgel swell. We have studied three surfactants differing in the number of amino groups, so that the number of charges of the surfactant head varies between 1 and 3. We have found experimentally and theoretically that the surfactant concentration needed for microgel compaction increases with decreasing number of charges of the head group. Utilization of polyamine azobenzene containing surfactants for the light triggered remote control of the microgel size opens up a possibility for applications of light responsive microgels as drug carriers in biology and medicine.

The surface tension and dilational surface visco-elasticity of the individual solutions of the biopolymer DNA and the azobenzene-containing cationic surfactant AzoTAB, as well as their mixtures were measured using the drop profile analysis tensiometry. The negatively charged DNA molecules form complexes with the cationic surfactant AzoTAB. Mixed DNA + AzoTAB solutions exhibit high surface activity and surface layer elasticity. Extremes in the dependence of these characteristics on the AzoTAB concentration exist within the concentration range of 3 × 10−6–5 × 10−5 M. The surface tension of the mixture shows a minimum with a subsequent maximum. In the same concentration range the elasticity shows first a maximum and then a subsequent minimum. A recently developed thermodynamic model was modified to account for the dependence of the adsorption equilibrium constant of the adsorbed complex on the cationic surfactant concentration. This modified theory shows good agreement with the experimental data both for the surface tension and the elasticity values over the entire range of studied AzoTAB concentrations.

Here we report on photo-isomerization of azobenzene containing surfactants induced during irradiation with near-infrared (NIR) light in the presence of upconversion nanoparticles (UCNPs) acting as mediator. The surfactant molecule consists of charged head group and hydrophobic tail with azobenzene group incorporated in alkyl chain. The azobenzene group can be reversible photo-isomerized between two states: trans- and cis- by irradiation with light of an appropriate wavelength. The trans-cis photo-isomerization is induced by UV light, while cis-trans isomerization proceeds either thermally in darkness, or can be accelerated by exposure to illumination with a longer wavelength typically in a blue/green range. We present the application of lanthanide doped UCNPs to successfully switch azobenzene containing surfactants from cis to trans conformation in bulk solution using NIR light. Using Tm-3(+) or Er-3(+) as activator ions, the UCNPs provide emissions in the spectral range of 450 nm < lambda(em) < 480 nm (for Tm-3(+), three and four photon induced emission) or 525 nm < lambda(em) < 545 nm (for Er-3(+), two photon induced emission), respectively. Especially for UCNPs containing Tm-3(+) a good overlap of the emissions with the absorption bands of the azobenzene is present. Under illumination of the surfactant solution with NIR light (lambda(ex) = 976 nm) in the presence of the Tm-3(+)-doped UCNPs, the relaxation time of cis-trans photo-isomerization was increased by almost 13 times compared to thermally induced isomerization. The influence of thermal heating due to the irradiation using NIR light was shown to be minor for solvents not absorbing in NIR spectral range (e.g. CHCl3) in contrast to water, which shows a distinct absorption in the NIR.

We report on the formation of stimuli-responsive structured hydrogel thin films whose pattern geometry can be adjusted on demand and tuned reversibly by varying solvent quality or by changing temperature. The hydrogel films, similar to 100 nm in thickness, were prepared by depositing layers of random copolymers comprising N-isopropylacrylamide and ultraviolet (UV)-active methacryloyloxybenzophenone units onto solid substrates. A two-beam interference pattern technique was used to cross-link the selected areas of the film; any unreacted material was extracted using ethanol after UV light-assisted cross-linking. In this way, we produced nanoholes, perfectly ordered structures with a narrow size distribution, negligible tortuosity, adjustable periodicity, and a high density. The diameter of the circular holes ranged from a few micrometers down to several tens of nanometers; the hole periodicity could be adjusted readily by changing the optical period of the UV interference pattern. The holes were reversibly closed and opened by swelling/deswelling the polymer networks in the presence of ethanol and water, respectively, at various temperatures. The reversible regulation of the hole diameter can be repeated many times within a few seconds. The hydrogel sheet with circular holes periodically arranged may also be transferred onto different substrates and be employed as tunable templates for the deposition of desired substances.

We report on rendering polyelectrolyte brushes photosensitive by loading them with azobenzene-containing cationic surfactants. Planar poly( methacrylic acid) (PMAA) brushes are synthesized using the "grafting from" free-radical polymerization scheme followed by exposure to a solution of photosensitive surfactants consisting of positively-charged head groups and hydrophobic tails into which azobenzene moieties are inserted. In this study the length of the hydrophobic methylene spacer connecting the azobenzene and the charged head group ranges from 4 to 10 CH2 groups. Under irradiation with UV light, the photo-isomerization of azobenzene integrated into a surfactant results in a change in size, geometry, dipole moment and free volume of the whole molecule. When the brush loaded with photosensitive surfactants is exposed to irradiation with UV interference patterns, the topography of the brush deforms following the distribution of the light intensity, exhibiting surface relief gratings (SRG). Since SRG formation is accompanied by a local rupturing of polymer chains in areas from which the polymer material is receding, most of the polymer material is removed from the surface during treatment with good solvent, leaving behind characteristic patterns of lines or dots. The azobenzene molecules still integrated within the polymer film can be removed by washing the brush with water. The remaining nano-structured brush can then be re-used for further functionalization. Although the opto-mechanically induced rupturing occurs for all surfactants, larger species do not penetrate deep enough into the brush such that after rupturing a leftover layer of polymer material remains on the substrate. This indicates that rupturing occurs predominantly in regions of high surfactant density.

We report on photoisomerization kinetics of azobenzene containing surfactants in aqueous solution. The surfactant molecule consists of a positively charged trimethylammonium bromide head group, a hydrophobic spacer connecting via 6 to 10 CH2 groups to the azobenzene unit, and the hydrophobic tail of 1 and 3CH(2) groups. Under exposure to light, the azobenzene photoisomerizes from more stable trans- to metastable cis-state, which can be switched back either thermally in dark or by illumination with light of a longer wavelength. The surfactant isomerization is described by a kinetic model of a pseudo first order reaction approaching equilibrium, where the intensity controls the rate of isomerization until the equilibrated state. The rate constants of the trans-cis and cis-trans photoisomerization are calculated as a function of several parameters such as wavelength and intensity of light, the surfactant concentration, and the length of the hydrophobic tail. The thermal relaxation rate from cis- to trans-state is studied as well. The surfactant isomerization shows a different kinetic below and above the critical micellar concentration of the trans isomer due to steric hindrance within the densely packed micelle but does not depend on the spacer length.

We investigate light-induced changes in thickness and roughness of photosensitive polymer brushes containing azobenzene cationic surfactants by atomic force microscopy (AFM) in real time during light irradiation. Because the cis-state of azobenzene unit requires more free volume than its trans counterpart, the UV light-induced expansion of polymer thin films associated with the trans-to-cis isomerism of azobenzene groups is expected to occur. This phenomenon is well documented in physisorbed polymer films containing azobenzene groups. In contrast, photosensitive polymer brushes show a decrease in thickness under UV irradiation. We have found that the azobenzene surfactants in their trans-state form aggregates within the brush. Under irradiation, the surfactants undergo photoisomerization to the cis-state, which is more hydrophilic. As a consequence, the aggregates within the brush are disrupted, and the polymer brush contracts. When subsequently irradiated with blue light the polymer brush thickness returns back to its initial value. This behavior is related to isomerization of the surfactant to the more hydrophobic trans-state and subsequent formation of surfactant aggregates within the polymer brush. The photomechanical function of the dry polymer brush, i.e., contraction and expansion, was found to be reversible with repeated irradiation cycles and requires only a few seconds for switching. In addition to the thickness change, the roughness of the brush also changes reversibly between a few Angstroms (blue light) and several nanometers (UV light). Photosensitive polymer brushes represent smart films with light responsive thickness and roughness that could be used for generating dynamic fluctuating surfaces, the function of which can be turned on and off in a controllable manner on a nanometer length scale.

The light-induced reversible switching of the swelling of microgel particles triggered by photo-isomerization and binding/unbinding of a photosensitive azobenzene-containing surfactant is reported. The interactions between the microgel (N-isopropylacrylamide, co-monomer: allyl acetic acid, crosslinker: N,N'-methylenebisacrylamide) and the surfactant are studied by UV-Vis spectroscopy, dynamic and electrophoretic light scattering measurements. Addition of the surfactant above a critical concentration leads to contraction/collapse of the microgel. UV light irradiation results in trans-cis isomerization of the azobenzene unit incorporated into the surfactant tail and causes an unbinding of the more hydrophilic cis isomer from the microgel and its reversible swelling. The reversible contraction can be realized by blue light irradiation that transfers the surfactant back to the more hydrophobic trans conformation, in which it binds to the microgel. The phase diagram of the surfactant-microgel interaction and transitions (aggregation, contraction, and precipitation) is constructed and allows prediction of changes in the system when the concentration of one or both components is varied. Remote and reversible switching between different states can be realized by either UV or visible light irradiation.

We report on a process inducing photomechanical fracture of chemical bonds in photosensitive PMAA polymer brushes. The photosensitive PMAA polymer brushes were prepared by covalent attachment of azobenzene groups to poly(methylacrylic acid) (PMAA) chains generated by surface-initiated polymerization. While homogeneous irradiation leaves the polymer topography unchanged, the azo-PMAA brushes show a strong response upon irradiation with UV interference patterns. The photoisomerization process in the surface-attached polymer films results in the irreversible formation of surface relief gratings (SRG), which are strongly enhanced upon washing with a good solvent for the polymer. The photomechanical forces during mass transport induced by the irradiation lead to the scission of covalent bounds and accordingly to a degrafting of the polymer chains in areas where the polymer is receding from. It is observed that the number of ruptured chains depends strongly on the amount of azo side chains in the polymer.

We report on the preparation and characterization of photosensitive polymer brushes. The brushes are synthesized through polymer analogous attachment of azo-benzene groups to surface-attached poly(methacrylic acid) (PMAA) chains. The topography of the photosensitive brushes shows a strong reaction upon irradiation with UV light. While homogeneous illumination leaves the polymer topography unchanged, irradiation of the samples with interference patterns with periodically varying light intensity leads to the formation of surface relief gratings (SRG). The height of the stripes of the grating can be controlled by adjusting the irradiation time. The SRG pattern can be erased through solvent treatment when the periodicity of the stripe pattern is less than the length of the fully stretched polymer chains. In the opposite case, photomechanical scission of receding polymer chains is observed during SRG formation, and the inscribed patterns are permanent.

The preparation of polyaramide thin films on silicon wafers via stepwise layer buildup is described. Hydroxy- and amine-functionalized silicon wafers are reacted in step-and-repeat processes with aromatic dichlorides and diamines, which leads to a stepwise formation of a surface-attached polyamide layer. In the case of aromatic diamines and terephtaloyl dichloride the generation of an up to 115 nm thick polyaramide layer is described while the corresponding aliphatic compounds yield only very thin films. FTIR, ellipsometric measurements and atomic force microscopy (AFM) show a linear growth of the polyaramide layers for more than a thousand reaction cycles. The mechanism of the monomer-by-monomer layer formation process and the structure of the formed films are elucidated.

Thermodynamically controlled polycondensations (TCPs) are defined as stage-growth polymerizations involving condensation step with rapid equilibration including “back-biting degradation”. It is theoretically demonstrated that the molar concentration of linear chains responsible for their cyclization tendency dramatically decreases with higher conversions, so that a clean TCP yields 100% cycles at 100% conversion. Therefore, a TCP with 100% conversion yields the same reaction product as are equilibration of monomeric or oligomeric heterocycles (in this connection a new definition of conversion is presented). In contrast, the classical theory of TCPs elaborated by Stockmayer and Flory postulates 2.5–3.0 weight% of cycles in combination with one giant linear chain (97.0–97.5 weight%) as the endproduct of 100% conversion. Furthermore, it is demonstrated that the new theory of TCPs also applies to “a2 + b n ” polycondensations. When the equilibrium favors smaller cycles, spirocycles and low molar mass multicycles are thermodynamically favored over macrocyclic networks. Experimental results discussed in this work concern nylon-6 and nylon −7/−6,8, poly(1,3-dioxolane), tin containing polyethers, and multicyclic polyethers derived from germanium, tin, titanium and zirconium alkoxides.

The ring-opening polymerization of salicylic acid O-carboxyanhydride (SOCA) was studied under various reaction conditions and analyzed by means of MALDI-TOF mass spectrometry with regard to the formation of cyclic poly(salicylide)s. First, two thermal polymerizations were performed in the melt at 170°C and cyclic oligosalicylates were found possibly resulting from “back-biting”. Second, polymerizations catalyzed by a highly nucleophilic carbene in dioxane at 20, 50 or 80°C. In these cases, the formation of the detected cyclic polysalicylides was most likely formed by end-to-end cyclization of zwitterionic chains. Third, imidazole-initiated polymerizations were performed in bulk at 140°C. In agreement with a nucleophilic initiation linear chains having imidazolide endgroups were detected in addition to the mass peaks of cyclic polysalicylates.

Heating of l-lactide with imidazole to 98−100 °C resulted in complete polymerization within 48 h. Even-numbered cycles resulting from end-to-end cyclization were the only reaction products after 4 h, but the polymerization process was accompanied by intensive racemization. Longer reaction times favored equilibration reactions with formation of odd-numbered cycles. Variation of the monomer−initiator ratio at 120 °C had little influence on the molecular weight. After 8 h at 150 °C, equal quantities of odd- and even-numbered cycles were found, indicating complete equilibration. Other protic heterocycles such as 1,2,4-triazole, benzimidazolyl acetonitrile, uracile, or hypoxanthine were not active as initiators/catalysts at 120 °C. However, the tertiary amine N-methylimidazole also catalyzes the formation of cyclic polylactides together with several byproducts. The reaction mechanisms are discussed.

α-Hydroxyisobutyric acid anhydrosulfate HiBAS (5,5-dimethyl-1,3,2-dioxithiolan-4-one-2-oxide) was polymerized under various reaction conditions and the solid reaction products were characterized by 1H NMR spectroscopy, MALDI-TOF mass spectrometry (MT m.s.), fast atom bombardment mass spectrometry (FAB m.s.), viscosity, and SEC measurements. Thermal polymerizations at 100 °C mainly yielded cyclic oligo polyesters presumably resulting from a zwitterionic polymerization. Cycles were also detected when pyridine was used as catalyst at 20 °C. When triethylamine was used as catalyst traces of H2O played the role of initiators. Benzyl alcohol initiated the polymerization of HiBAS at 100 °C and yielded a polyester terminated by one benzylester and one OH endgroup. The SEC measurements indicated that all samples possess relatively low molar masses with number–average molecular weights ≤ 10,000 Da (in contrast to the literature data). © 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The NCAs of the following five amino acids were polymerized in bulk at 120 °C without addition of a catalyst or initiator: sarcosine (Sar), L-alanine (L-Ala), D,L-phenylalanine (D,L-Phe), D,L-leucine (D,L-Leu) and D,L-valine (D,L-Val). The virgin reaction products were characterized by viscosity measurements 13C NMR spectroscopy and MALDI-TOF mass spectrometry. In addition to numerous low molar mass byproducts cyclic polypeptides were formed as the main reaction products in the mass range above 800 Da. Two types of cyclic oligo- and polypeptides were detected in all cases with exception of sarcosine NCA, which only yielded one class of cyclic polypeptides. The efficient formation of cyclic oligo- and polypeptides explains why high molar mass polymers cannot be obtained by thermal polymerizations of α-amino acid NCAs. Dithiolane-2,4-dione was polymerized either by heating in bulk to 140 °C or by reacting at 20 °C using pyridine and triethylamine as catalysts. Whereas the thermal polymerization almost exclusively yielded cyclic poly(thioglycolide), the samples prepared at 20 °C by means of tertiary amines contained cyclic and linear chains. The end groups of the linear chains varied with the nonsolvent used for the workup procedure, because chains having reactive end groups were immobilized by rapid crystallization and reacted at the electrophilic CO-chain end with the nonsolvent. d,l-5-Methyldithiolane-2,4-dione proved so stable that tertiary amines did not catalyze its polymerization even at 100 °C. Thermal polymerization at 160 °C yielded oligoester mainly consisting of cyles. A zwitterionic polymerization mechanism allowing for simultaneous chain-growth and step-growth polymerization is discussed.

5,5‘-Tetrahydroxy-3,3,3‘,3‘-tetramethyl spirobisindane (TTSBI) was deprotonated with potassium tert-butoxide and polycondensed with di(ethylene glycol) tosylate or tri(ethylene glycol) tosylate. Polycondensations in DMSO gave cleaner reaction products than in DMF. At concentrations of 0.1 or 0.2 mol/L no cross-linking was observed and multicyclic polyethers were isolated. The high yields (up to 99%), the 1H NMR and the MALDI−TOF mass spectra proved almost complete conversion. The DSC measurements indicated an amorphous character with two glass-transition temperatures. The SEC measurements showed rather narrow mass distributions with polydispersities below 2. The multicyclic polyethers dissolved lithium, sodium, potassium, and cesium benzoate in tetrahydrofuran at weight ratios around 1/50 (salt/multicycle).

International audience; We report on the experimental and theoretical investigation of a considerable increase in the rate for thermal cis -> trans isomerization of azobenzene-containing molecules in the presence of gold nanopartides. Experimentally, by means of UV vis spectroscopy, we studied a series of azobenzene-containing surfactants and 4-nitroazobenzene. We found that in the presence of gold,nanoparticles the thermal lifetime of the cis isomer of the azobenzenecontaining molecules was decreased by up to 3 orders of magnitude in comparison to the lifetime in solution without nanoparticles. The electron transfer between azobenzene-containing molecules and a surface of gold nanopartides is a possible reason to promote the thermal cis trans switching. To investigate the effect of electron attachment to, and withdrawal from, the azobenzene-containing molecules on the isomerization rate, we performed density functional theory calculations of activation energy barriers of the reaction together with Eyring's transition state theory calculations of the rates for azobenzene derivatives with donor and acceptor groups in para position of one of the phenyl rings, as well as for one of the azobenzene-containing surfactants. We found that activation barriers are greatly lowered for azobenzene-containing molecules, both upon electron attachment and withdrawal, which leads, in turn, to a dramatic increase in the thermal isomerization rate.

Monodisperse oligo(ethylene glycol)s were polycondensed with trimesoyl chloride using triethylamine as HCl acceptor. Despite nearly quantitative conversions and relatively high concentrations (0.4 mol/L), no gelation occurred with tri- and tetra(ethylene glycol), regardless of the feed ratio. With a feed ratio around 1.5/1.0 multicyclic poly(ether esters)s free of end groups were isolated and characterized by 1H NMR and MALDI-TOF mass spectrometry. At concentrations of 0.2 or 0.4 mol/L di-, penta-, and hexa(ethylene glycol)s yielded gels. At concentrations ≥ 0.2 mol/L exclusively gels were obtained from various α,ω-dihydroxyalkanes. However, soluble multicycles were obtained from 1,8-dihydroxy-3,6-dithiaoctane and from 1,4-bis(2-hydroxyethoxy)-2-butyne. The influence of conformational differences on the cyclization tendency is discussed. The multicycles derived from tri- and tetraethylene glycol showed cryptand properties and dissolved Li-, Na-, K-, and Cs-benzoate in tetrahydrofuran.

Treatment of polymethyl methacrylate with dodecylamine and diethylenetriamine produces a chemomechanical polymer, which undergoes large macroscopic motions as a result of selective recognition of substrates (effectors) in the surrounding aqueous solution. The kinetics of these fully reversible expansions and contractions are compared to those of effector absorption and desorption. The expansion correlates with a polymer particle weight increase, which is in turn found to be largely a function of the uptake of water necessary for solvation of the effector molecules. The selectivity of the motions depends on the nature and placement of the effector ionic sites, and also on the size and nature of the organic residues. Ion pairing between the protonated amine functions and inorganic anions or anionic groups of organic effectors plays a decisive role. The large effects seen with aromatic effectors such as nucleotides, in contrast with saturated analogues, point to cation–π and C–H–π interactions as essential elements for the distinction between different effectors, including isomeric compounds. The material exhibits symmetric expansion/pH profiles, which depend distinctly on the ionic strength of the solution. The strong dependence of the motions not only on the applied pH, but also on the concentrations of two simultaneously active effectors, such as AMP and phosphate, present chemically induced logical gate functions; this is tentatively explained by a two-site binding model. In contrast, the large expansions produced by simultaneous action of, for example, copper or zinc and amino acids or peptides are due to co-complexation between the metal ions and known organic chelators. With such ternary complexes, volume expansions by factors of up to 15 are possible with effector concentrations as low as 0.25 mM. The sensitivity can be further increased by miniaturization of the polymer particles; the velocity of the response can be optimized by increasing the surface-to-volume ratio. 5,5',6,6'-Tetrahydroxy-3,3,3',3'-tetramethylspirobisindane was polycondensed with 1,4-dicyanotetrafluorobenzene in four different solvents at 70 °C. In dimethylformamide, N-methylpyrrolidone, and sulfolane exclusively, cyclic polymers were detectable by matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization time-of-flight (MALDI-TOF) mass spectrometry up to masses around 13,000 Da. In dimethyl sulfoxide, linear byproducts were also found. Higher temperatures caused degradation reactions catalyzed by potassium carbonate. Polycondensations performed with the addition of 4-tert-butyl catechol or 2,2'-dihydroxy binaphthyl yielded linear telechelic oligomers. Equimolar mixtures of linear and cyclic ladder polymers were examined by MALDI-TOF mass spectra to determine how the end groups and the cyclic structure influenced the signal-to-noise ratio. The results suggested a preferential detection of the linear chains.

Dimethyl terephthalate was polycondensed in bulk with a 300 mol % excess of 1,4-butanediol in bulk up to 250 °C. The following catalysts were used Bi2O3, BiCl3, Bi−subsalicylate, bismuth(III) acetate, ZnO, ZnCl2, SnO, SnCl2, Y2O3, YCl3, La2O3, LaCl3, Sb2O3/manganese(II) acetate, and Ti(OBu)4. The highest molecular weights were obtained with Ti(OBu)4. The MALDI−TOF mass spectra revealed that cycles were the main reaction products below 5000 Da. Clean telechelic oligo- and polyesters having two OH end groups were obtained with Bi2O3 and bismuth(III) acetate. With BiCl3, almost clean telechelics having two dimethyl terephthalate end groups were obtained. All other catalysts yield complex reaction mixtures containing cycles and linear chains having CH2OH methyl ester and/or CO2H end groups. At a final reaction temperature of 280 °C, formation of cycles, of CO2H, end groups and of bis(4-oxybutyl) ether units was favored.

Formation of supramolecular ternary complexes within a functionalized hydrogel are shown for the first time to lead to large macroscopic motions with biologically important effectors such as aminoacids and peptides. The mechanical motions can be made reversible by the addition of external metal ion complexing agents, and represent also chemical logical gate functions, operating without external devices or power supply.
