RESUMO O estudo das relações entre o solo e a floresta tem se mostrado importante para a compreensão, conservação e manejo destes recursos. Além disso, se constitui em instrumento valioso para o planejamento do território. A região ao norte de Manaus faz parte de um sub-domínio ecológico, onde as características edáficas e vegetacionais mostram diferenças ao longo de platôs, vertentes intermediárias e fundos de vales. Com o objetivo de avaliar o padrão destas mudanças, foram feitas descrições morfológicas de oito perfis de solo, em duas toposequências. Ao lado de cada perfil, foi feito também o estudo de um transecto, para a caracterização do tipo florestal presente, com o registro do nome vulgar e coleta de material botânico para posterior identificação. No sentido do platô para as posições mais baixas do relevo, se observa uma diferenciação da morfologia do solo com um aumento gradual no percentual de areia. As características edáficas mostram-se cada vez mais limitantes para o crescimento vegetal. No platô os solos apresentam uma textura argilosa ao longo de todo o perfil, tomando-se franco argilo arenoso a argilo arenoso nas vertentes, até chegar ao nível mais baixo da paisagem, onde os perfis se apresentam arenosos. Os resultados mostram também uma diferenciação progressiva no tipo de vegetação. A área basal decresce no sentido do platô para as áreas mais baixas. As florestas presentes em ambientes hídromórficos apresentam também uma relação estreita entre o tipo vegetacional e as características morfológicas do solo. São propostos oito tipos de paisagens florestais, que deverão subsidiar o planejamento, as intervenções e o manejo dos recursos naturais presentes na região.

Forest phytophysiognomies have specific spatial patterns that can be mapped or translated into spectral patterns of vegetation. Regions of spectral similarity can be classified by reference to color, tonality or intensity of brightness, reflectance, texture, size, shape, neighborhood influence, etc. We evaluated the power of accuracy of supervised classification algorithms via per-pixel (maximum likelihood) and geographic object-based image analysis (GEOBIA) for distinguishing spectral patterns of the vegetation in the northern Brazilian Amazon. A total of 280 training samples (70%) and 120 validation samples (30%) of each of the 11 vegetation cover and land-use classes (N = 4400) were classified based on differences in their visible (RGB), near-infrared (NIR), and medium infrared (SWIR 1 or MIR) Landsat 8 (OLI) bands. Classification by pixels achieved a greater accuracy (Kappa = 0.75%) than GEOBIA (Kappa = 0.72%). GEOBIA, however, offers a greater plasticity and the possibility of calibrating the spectral rules associated with vegetation indices and spatial parameters. We conclude that both methods enabled precision spectral separations (0.45–1.65 μm), contributing to the distinctions between forest phytophysiognomies and land uses—strategic factors in the planning and management of natural resources in protected areas in the Amazon region.

ABSTRACT In Brazil, all transport and storage of native forest products and by-products must be registered within the DOF (Document of Forestry Origin) system. This computerized platform exists to support control agencies in reducing the sale of forest products obtained illegally. However, this tool still shows only modest results in fulfilling its objectives, since gaps in the system allow illegal wood to be acquired and enter the system as legal wood. The objective of this study was to test whether the volumetric yield coefficient (CRV) of a sawmill on an industrial scale corresponds to the 35% established by Brazilian legislation. The focus was directed at a loophole that allows the accumulation of virtual credits in the DOF system by turning logs into lumber. For this purpose, we estimated the sawmill’s CRV and mean percentage yield of 19 commercial species used by a timber company in the Brazilian Amazon with a sample size of 90 logs. The estimated CRV was 24.6 ± 2.4, showing 9.9% uncertainty. The mean CRV differed highly significantly (p < 0.001) from that proposed by the DOF, with a 10.35% difference. Based on these results, the difference between the observed yield and that proposed by the legislation can generate the accumulation of virtual log credits. With this accumulation, managers encounter difficulties in acquiring new logging permits and, consequently, do not meet the actual demand for logs to the sawmill’s capacity.

IntroductionThe productivity of the Amazon Rainforest is related to climate and soil fertility. However, the degrees to which these interactions influence multiannual to decadal variations in tree diameter growth are still poorly explored.MethodsTo fill this gap, we used radiocarbon measurements to evaluate the variation in tree growth rates over the past decades in an important hyperdominant species, Eschweilera coriacea (Lecythidaceae), from six sites in the Brazilian Amazon that span a range of soil properties and climate.ResultsUsing linear mixed-effects models, we show that temporal variations in mean annual diameter increment evaluated over a specific time period reflect interactions between soil fertility and the drought index (SPEI-Standardized Precipitation and Evapotranspiration Index).DiscussionOur results indicate that the growth response of trees to drought is strongly dependent on soil conditions, a facet of forest productivity that is still underexplored, and which has great potential for improving predictions of future tropical tree growth in the face of projected climate change.

Tree mortality has been shown to be the dominant control on carbon storage in Amazon forests, but little is known of how and why Amazon forest trees die. Here the authors analyse a large Amazon-wide dataset, finding that fast-growing species face greater mortality risk, but that slower-growing individuals within a species are more likely to die, regardless of size.

With current observations and future projections of more intense and frequent droughts in the tropics, understanding the impact that extensive dry periods may have on tree and ecosystem-level transpiration and concurrent carbon uptake has become increasingly important. Here, we investigate paired soil and tree water extraction dynamics in an old-growth upland forest in central Amazonia during the 2018 dry season. Tree water use was assessed via radial patterns of sap flow in eight dominant canopy trees, each a different species with a range in diameter, height, and wood density. Paired multi-sensor soil moisture probes used to quantify volumetric water content dynamics and soil water extraction within the upper 100 cm were installed adjacent to six of those trees. To link depth-specific water extraction patterns to root distribution, fine root biomass was assessed through the soil profile to 235 cm. To scale tree water use to the plot level (stand transpiration), basal area was measured for all trees within a 5 m radius around each soil moisture probe. The sensitivity of tree transpiration to reduced precipitation varied by tree, with some increasing and some decreasing in water use during the dry period. Tree-level water use scaled with sapwood area, from 11 to 190 L per day. Stand level water use, based on multiple plots encompassing sap flow and adjacent trees, varied from ∼1.7 to 3.3 mm per day, increasing linearly with plot basal area. Soil water extraction was dependent on root biomass, which was dense at the surface (i.e., 45% in the upper 5 cm) and declined dramatically with depth. As the dry season progressed and the upper soil dried, soil water extraction shifted to deeper levels and model projections suggest that much of the water used during the month-long dry-down could be extracted from the upper 2–3 m. Results indicate variation in rates of soil water extraction across the research area and, temporally, through the soil profile. These results provide key information on whole-tree contributions to transpiration by canopy trees as water availability changes. In addition, information on simultaneous stand level dynamics of soil water extraction that can inform mechanistic models that project tropical forest response to drought.

Every year, logging in the world’s largest tropical forest, located within the Amazon biome, continues unabated. Although it is a preferred alternative to deforestation, the residual stand and site are impacted by logging. The objective of this review was to determine and assess the current state of research throughout Amazonia on the subject of logging impacts. To achieve this goal, a systematic approach was utilized to gather, assess and categorize research articles conducted in the Amazon biome over the last decade. Eligibility for inclusion of articles required demonstration of a direct impact from logging operations. A total of 121 articles were determined to meet the eligibility requirements and were included in this review. Articles were subdivided into three environmental categories: forest (n = 85), wildlife (n = 24) and streams (n = 12). The results of this review demonstrated that impacts from logging activities to the forest site were a direct result of the logging cycle (e.g., how often logging occurs) or logging intensity (e.g., how many trees are felled). The impacts to wildlife varied dependent on species, whereas impacts to streams were affected more by the logging system. Overall, research suggested that to attain sustainability and diminish the impacts from logging, a lower logging intensity of 10–15 m3 ha−1 and a longer logging cycle of 40–60 years would be essential for the long-term viability of forest management in Amazonia.

Leaf respiration in the dark (Rdark) and light (Rday) is poorly characterized in diverse tropical ecosystems, and little to no information exists on the degree of light suppression in common tree species within the Amazon basin, and their dependences upon plant functional traits and position within the canopy. We quantified Rdark and apparent Rday using the Kok method and measured key leaf traits in 26 tree individuals of different species distributed in three different canopy positions: canopy, lower canopy, and understory. To explore the relationships between the leaf traits we used the standardized major axis (SMA). We found that canopy trees had significantly higher rates of Rdark and Rday than trees in the understory. The difference between Rdark and Rday (the light suppression of respiration) was greatest in the understory (68 ± 9%, 95% CI) and lower canopy (49 ± 9%, 95% CI) when compared to the canopy (37 ± 10%, 95% CI). We also found that Rday was significantly and strongly correlated with Rdark (p < 0.001) for all the canopy positions. Also, leaf mass per area (LMA) and leaf Phosphorus concentration (P) had a significant relationship with Rdark (p < 0.001; p = 0.003), respectively. In addition, a significant relationship was found for LMA in the canopy and lower canopy positions (p = 0.009; p = 0.048) while P was only significant in the canopy (p = 0.044). Finally, no significant relationship was found between Rdark and nitrogen, sugars, and starch. Our results highlight the importance of including representation of the light suppression of leaf respiration in terrestrial biosphere models and also of accounting for vertical gradients within forest canopies and connections with functional traits.

The Neotropics harbor some of the most diversified woody species in the world, and to understand the nutrient dynamics in these ecosystems, it is crucial to understand the role of plant taxonomy. In addition, biological nitrogen (N) fixation (BNF) in the tropics is one of the key processes affecting the global N cycle. Our objective was to (i) investigate the role of taxonomy and sampling site as predictors of foliar carbon (C) and N concentration and its stable isotopes (i.e., δ13C and δ15N); (ii) assess differences in foliar N, C:N ratio, and δ15N among three functional groups: species of N2-fixers and non-fixers of the Fabaceae family, as well as non-Fabaceae species; and (iii) examine the effect of wood density on tree foliar properties. We hypothesized that Fabaceae specimens in symbiosis with N2-fixers would possess a higher foliar N than non-fixing plants, including those of the Fabaceae family, as well as high-density trees would have higher foliar C and C:N ratio relative to low-density trees, where the latter invest in nutrients instead of structural C. We used a data set composed of 3,668 specimens sampled in three main biomes of Brazil: Amazon, Atlantic Forest, and Cerrado. The partitioning of variance had a higher influence of taxonomy on leaf C, N, and C:N ratio. Conversely, foliar δ13C and δ15N were environmentally constrained. While family was the most important taxonomy level for C, N, and C:N ratio, species played a major role for δ13C and δ15N. Foliar N followed the pattern fixers > non-fixers > non-Fabaceae, while C:N ratio had an opposite trend. In addition, foliar C was correlated with wood density, where high-density > medium-density and low-density woods. The large variability of δ15N was observed among Fabaceae species, demonstrates the complexity of using δ15N as an indicator of BNF. The higher foliar N of Fabaceae non-fixers than non-Fabaceae specimens support the hypothesis that an N-demanding lifestyle is an inherent pattern in this family. Lastly, although observed in some studies, the prediction of foliar properties using wood density is challenging, and future research on this topic is needed.

ABSTRACT Hydrological processes in forest stands are mainly influenced by tree species composition and morpho-physiological characteristics. Few studies on anatomical patterns that govern plant hydraulics were conducted in tropical forest ecosystems. Thus, we used dye immersion to analyze sapwood area patterns of 34 trees belonging to 26 species from a terra firme forest in the central Brazilian Amazon. The sapwood area was related with wood anatomy and tree size parameters (diameter-at-breast-height - DBH, total height and estimated whole-tree volume). Exponential allometric equations were used to model sapwood area using the biometrical variables measured. Sapwood area traits (cross-section non-uniformity and heartwood visibility) varied significantly among and within species even though all were classified as diffuse porous. DBH was strongly and non-linearly correlated with sapwood area (R 2 = 0.46, P < 0.001), while no correlation was observed with vessel-lumen diameter (P = 0.94) and frequency (P = 0.58). Sapwood area and shape were also affected by the occurrence of vessel obstruction (i.e., tyloses), hollow stems and diseases. Our results suggest that sapwood area patterns and correlated variables are driven by intrinsic species characteristics, microclimate and ecological succession within the stand. We believe that individual tree sapwood characteristics have strong implications over water use, hydrological stand upsaling and biomass quantification. These characteristics should be taken into account (e.g., through a multi-point sampling approach) when estimating forest stand transpiration in a highly biodiverse ecosystem.

Abstract Soil moisture plays a key role in hydrological, biogeochemical, and energy budgets of terrestrial ecosystems. Accurate soil moisture measurements in remote ecosystems such as the Amazon are difficult and limited because of logistical constraints. Time domain reflectometry (TDR) sensors are widely used to monitor soil moisture and require calibration to convert the TDR's dielectric permittivity measurement (Ka) to volumetric water content (θv). In this study, our objectives were to develop a field‐based calibration of TDR sensors in an old‐growth upland forest in the central Amazon, to evaluate the performance of the calibration, and then to apply the calibration to determine the dynamics of soil moisture content within a 14.2‐m‐deep vertical soil profile. Depth‐specific TDR calibration using local soils in a controlled laboratory setting yielded a novel Ka–θv third‐degree polynomial calibration. The sensors were later installed to their specific calibration depth in a 14.2‐m pit. The widely used Ka–θv relationship (Topp model) underestimated the site‐specific θv by 22–42%, indicating significant error in the model when applied to these well‐structured, clay‐rich tropical forest soils. The calibrated wet‐ and dry‐season θv data showed a variety of depth and temporal variations highlighting the importance of soil textural differentiation, root uptake depths, as well as event to seasonal precipitation effects. Data such as these are greatly needed for improving our understanding of ecohydrological processes within tropical forests and for improving models of these systems in the face of changing environmental conditions.

Tree growth and survival differ strongly between canopy trees (those directly exposed to overhead light), and understory trees. However, the structural complexity of many tropical forests makes it difficult to determine canopy positions. The integration of remote sensing and ground-based data enables this determination and measurements of how canopy and understory trees differ in structure and dynamics. Here we analyzed 2 cm resolution RGB imagery collected by a Remotely Piloted Aircraft System (RPAS), also known as drone, together with two decades of bi-annual tree censuses for 2 ha of old growth forest in the Central Amazon. We delineated all crowns visible in the imagery and linked each crown to a tagged stem through field work. Canopy trees constituted 40% of the 1244 inventoried trees with diameter at breast height (DBH) > 10 cm, and accounted for ~70% of aboveground carbon stocks and wood productivity. The probability of being in the canopy increased logistically with tree diameter, passing through 50% at 23.5 cm DBH. Diameter growth was on average twice as large in canopy trees as in understory trees. Growth rates were unrelated to diameter in canopy trees and positively related to diameter in understory trees, consistent with the idea that light availability increases with diameter in the understory but not the canopy. The whole stand size distribution was best fit by a Weibull distribution, whereas the separate size distributions of understory trees or canopy trees > 25 cm DBH were equally well fit by exponential and Weibull distributions, consistent with mechanistic forest models. The identification and field mapping of crowns seen in a high resolution orthomosaic revealed new patterns in the structure and dynamics of trees of canopy vs. understory at this site, demonstrating the value of traditional tree censuses with drone remote sensing.

Transpiration is often considered to be light- but not water-limited in humid tropical rainforests due to abundant soil water, even during the dry seasons. The record-breaking 2015–16 El Niño drought provided a unique opportunity to examine whether transpiration is constrained by water under severe lack of rainfall. We measured sap velocity, soil water content, and meteorological variables in an old-growth upland forest in the Central Amazon throughout the 2015–16 drought. We found a rapid decline in sap velocity (−38 ± 21%, mean ± SD.) and in its temporal variability (−88%) during the drought compared to the wet season. Such changes were accompanied by a marked decline in soil moisture and an increase in temperature and vapor pressure deficit. Sap velocity was largely limited by net radiation during the wet and normal dry seasons; however, it shifted to be primarily limited by soil moisture during the drought. The threshold in which sap velocity became dominated by soil moisture was at 0.33 m ^3 m ^−3 (around −150 kPa in soil matric potential), below which sap velocity dropped steeply. Our study provides evidence for a soil water threshold on transpiration in a moist tropical forest, suggesting a shift from light limitation to water limitation under future climate characterized by increased temperature and an increased frequency, intensity, duration and extent of extreme drought events.

O trabalho em exploração florestal exige grande contingente e carga física sob condições ambientais desfavoráveis. Portanto, um bom condicionamento e hábitos saudáveis são essenciais para o desempenho. O estudo pretendeu a coleta de frequência cardíaca para estimar a carga física do trabalho em exploração florestal. A pesquisa foi conduzida no município de Itapiranga, Amazonas, Brasil. Foram avaliadas as operações de pré-arraste, arraste e pátio, exceto o corte. Foi coletada frequência cardíaca da ocupação mais desgastante em cada operação, e estimadas as cargas físicas por dois métodos: anexo C da ISO 8996 e o método CCV. A variável peso demonstrou forte correlação positiva com a frequência cardíaca. A carga física variou em até 167 kcal/h para a mesma ocupação. A ocupação puxador de cabo (pré-arraste) foi a mais desgastante, sendo considerada pesada e estimou-se pausas de até 15 min./h. A frequência cardíaca demonstrou ser indicadora do condicionamento físico, um aspecto importante, pois interfere no desempenho do trabalhador.

ABSTRACT The Amazon forest comprises many different forest types, amongst them are campinas and campinaranas, which occur on Amazonian sandy soils, representing 2.65% of Amazonian territory. An understanding of the ecology and quantification of the environmental goods and services of campinaranas is key to their conservation. Based on a direct method to estimate biomass and carbon content of campinarana, we harvested and weighted 89 trees and other forest components in ten randomly allocated plots of 100 m2 (10 x 10 m) and 11 additional trees outside the plots. The data allowed us to describe how biomass is distributed amongst campinarana vegetation and amongst tree compartments. We developed allometric equations to estimate the total, above- and below-ground biomass and carbon stock of this forest type. We used a Weibull function to test if the diameter distribution of the individual trees sampled was consistent with the diameter distribution of the forest type. We also tested if terra-firme forest biomass equations could be used to estimate campinarana biomass, and whether a correction factor based on dominant height would reduce the error from these estimates. Allometric equations are considered to be the most reliable and rapid method for calculating forest biomass, and are used in forest management and climate change studies. These are the first total biomass equations developed for central Amazonian campinaranas. The best fitted allometric equation for total fresh biomass was: ln (Total Biomass) = -1.373 + 2.546 * ln DBH (R ² = 0.98, Sxy% = 4.19%).

O conforto térmico laboral está entre 20 e 24°C, porém na Amazônia as médias diurnas superam os 28°C, ou seja, há desconforto térmico no trabalho. Para acentuar, a ocorrência de fenômenos extremos El Niño relacionados à mudança climática, vêm causando aumento das temperaturas na região e os efeitos recairão sobre a saúde e capacidade dos trabalhadores. O potencial desenvolvimento do manejo florestal e o bem-estar laboral vão de encontro a previsões de fenômenos extremos na Amazônia, o que justifica a realização deste trabalho. Este estudo teve como objetivo a coleta de variáveis ambientais durante o El Niño Godzilla (2015-2016) e comparação com outros períodos. O estudo foi conduzido no município de Itapiranga, Amazonas, Brasil, coordenadas latitude 02° 75’ S e longitude 58° 47’ W durante novembro de 2015. As variáveis coletadas foram: IBUTG (Índice de bulbo úmido e termômetro de globo) (°C); temperatura do ar (°C), temperatura de globo (°C) e umidade relativa do ar (%). As análises utilizaram testes t de Student para dados pareados e não-pareados, interpretados pela tabela de probabilidade do IPCC (2010). Os resultados demonstraram diferenças significativas para todas as variáveis e cenários: temperaturas maiores e umidade menor durante o El Niño Godzilla. As adequações práticas da exposição ao calor acarretam em maior bem-estar dos trabalhadores, com consequentes melhorias à saúde, à segurança e ao desempenho das operações, sob o cenário atual e de mudança climática.

(1) Background: Forests throughout the world are managed to fulfil a range of commercial and ecosystem services. The same applies to managed areas of the Amazon forest. We explore a method of sustainable forest management (SFM) which anticipates the result of processes of natural mortality of large, mature trees that could fall and damage their neighbors. Collecting all the information required for planning logging in the Brazilian Amazon is, currently, a hard, time-consuming and expensive task. (2) Methods: This information can be obtained more quickly, accurately and objectively by including airborne laser scanning (ALS) products in the operational plan. We used ALS point clouds to isolate emergent crowns from the canopy height model. Then, we performed field work to validate the existence of these trees, and to understand how many commercial trees (tree diameter ≥ 50 cm) we identified by orienting the trees search through the emergent canopy model. (3) Results: We were able to detect 184 (54.4%) trees from 338 field-recorded individuals in 20 plots (totaling 8 ha). Of the detected trees, 66 individuals were classified as having potential for commerce. Furthermore, 58 individuals presented the best stem quality for logging, which represents more than seven high quality commercial trees per hectare. The logistic regression showed that the effects that positively influence the emergent crown formation are strongly presented in the commercial species. (4) Conclusions: Using airborne laser scanning can improve the SFM planning in a structurally complex, dense and mixed composition tropical forest by reducing field work in the initial stages of management. Therefore, we propose that ALS operational planning can be used to more efficiently direct field surveys without the need for a full census.

Current climate change scenarios indicate warmer temperatures and the potential for more extreme droughts in the tropics, such that a mechanistic understanding of the water cycle from individual trees to landscapes is needed to adequately predict future changes in forest structure and function. In this study, we contrasted physiological responses of tropical trees during a normal dry season with the extreme dry season due to the 2015–2016 El Niño-Southern Oscillation (ENSO) event. We quantified high resolution temporal dynamics of sap velocity (Vs), stomatal conductance (gs) and leaf water potential (ΨL) of multiple canopy trees, and their correlations with leaf temperature (Tleaf) and environmental conditions [direct solar radiation, air temperature (Tair) and vapor pressure deficit (VPD)]. The experiment leveraged canopy access towers to measure adjacent trees at the ZF2 and Tapajós tropical forest research (near the cities of Manaus and Santarém). The temporal difference between the peak of gs (late morning) and the peak of VPD (early afternoon) is one of the major regulators of sap velocity hysteresis patterns. Sap velocity displayed species-specific diurnal hysteresis patterns reflected by changes in Tleaf. In the morning, Tleaf and sap velocity displayed a sigmoidal relationship. In the afternoon, stomatal conductance declined as Tleaf approached a daily peak, allowing ΨL to begin recovery, while sap velocity declined with an exponential relationship with Tleaf. In Manaus, hysteresis indices of the variables Tleaf-Tair and ΨL-Tleaf were calculated for different species and a significant difference (p < 0.01, α = 0.05) was observed when the 2015 dry season (ENSO period) was compared with the 2017 dry season (“control scenario”). In some days during the 2015 ENSO event, Tleaf approached 40°C for all studied species and the differences between Tleaf and Tair reached as high at 8°C (average difference: 1.65 ± 1.07°C). Generally, Tleaf was higher than Tair during the middle morning to early afternoon, and lower than Tair during the early morning, late afternoon and night. Our results support the hypothesis that partial stomatal closure allows for a recovery in ΨL during the afternoon period giving an observed counterclockwise hysteresis pattern between ΨL and Tleaf.

Prolonged drought stress combined with high leaf temperatures can induce programmed leaf senescence involving lipid peroxidation, and the loss of net carbon assimilation during early stages of tree mortality. Periodic droughts are known to induce widespread tree mortality in the Amazon rainforest, but little is known about the role of lipid peroxidation during drought-induced leaf senescence. In this study, we present observations of green leaf volatile (GLV) emissions during membrane peroxidation processes associated with the combined effects of high leaf temperatures and drought-induced leaf senescence from individual detached leaves and a rainforest ecosystem in the central Amazon. Temperature-dependent leaf emissions of volatile terpenoids were observed during the morning, and together with transpiration and net photosynthesis, showed a post-midday depression. This post-midday depression was associated with a stimulation of C5 and C6 GLV emissions, which continued to increase throughout the late afternoon in a temperature-independent fashion. During the 2010 drought in the Amazon Basin, which resulted in widespread tree mortality, green leaf volatile emissions (C6 GLVs) were observed to build up within the forest canopy atmosphere, likely associated with high leaf temperatures and enhanced drought-induced leaf senescence processes. The results suggest that observations of GLVs in the tropical boundary layer could be used as a chemical sensor of reduced ecosystem productivity associated with drought stress.

Native fruiting plants are widely cultivated in the Amazon, but little information on their water use characteristics can be found in the literature. To explore the potential impacts of plantations on local to regional water balance, we studied plant water use characteristics of two native fruit plants commonly occurring in the Amazon region. The study was conducted in a mixed fruit plantation containing a dicot tree species (Cupuaçu, Theobroma grandiflorum) and a monocot palm species (Açai, Euterpe oleracea) close to the city of Manaus, in the Central Amazon. Scaling from sap flux measurements, palms had a 3.5-fold higher water consumption compared to trees with a similar diameter. Despite the high transpiration rates of the palms, our plantation had only one third of the potential water recycling capacity of natural forests in the area. Converting natural forest into such plantations will thus result in significantly higher runoff rates.

Allometric models to estimate biomass components such as stem mass Ms, foliage mass Ml, root mass Mr and aboveground mass Ma, were developed for the palm species Euterpe precatoria Mart., which is the most abundant tree species in the Amazon. We harvested twenty palms including above- and below-ground parts in an old growth Amazonian forest in Brazil. The diameter at breast height D ranged from 3.9–12.7 cm, and the stem height H ranged from 2.3–16.4 m. The D, diameter at ground basis D0, crown diameter CD, H, stem specific gravity ρ, and number of fronds Nf were considered as independent variables and incorporated into a power function model. The best predictors were D2Hρ for Ms and Ma, D2HNf for Ml, and D for Mr. Slender index (H/D) ranged from 0.56–1.46 m·cm−1, and the D-H relationship suggested that the stem shape becomes more slender with increasing D. On the other hand, ρ increased with D implying a stiffening of stem tissue. The average root/shoot ratio was estimated as 0.29 which was higher than that reported for the non-palm tree species in the Amazon. Comparisons of several models to estimate Ma of different palm species, suggested that the variations of the D-H relationship and ρ should be considered to develop allometric models for estimating biomass in palm species. In particular the ρ largely varied depending on individual size, which should be important to consider, when developing the allometric models for palms.

Durante a sua fase de planejamento, é necessário definir a intensidade de amostragem e o tamanho e forma de unidades de amostra para minimizar os custos de coleta de dados, aumentando a precisão do inventário florestal. Este estudo teve como objetivo testar diferentes tamanhos e formas de unidades de amostra para diferentes categorias de diâmetros a altura do peito (DAP). O estudo foi realizado na região de Manaus, incluindo INPA e áreas como a estação experimental da Embrapa em torno da BR-174, no estado do Amazonas, Brasil. Cinco categorias de DAP foram consideradas, como a seguir: 5 centímetros, 10 cm, 20 cm, 25 cm e 45 cm. Para todas as categorias de DAP, vinte e três diferentes tamanhos e duas formas foram testados, de 100 m² a 10.000 m². O número de amostras foi definido como n = 30 para todas as simulações de tamanho, para se confirmar a utilização dos pressupostos do teorema do limite central. A área basal foi utilizada para estimar a incerteza em relação ao verdadeiro valor da média para a comparação entre os diferentes tamanhos para cada categoria de DAP. Quase todos os tamanhos de parcela, em todas as categorias de DAP, obtiveram incertezas inferiores a 10%. Os que obtiveram melhores resultados foram os de 1000 m², 800 m², 1200 m², 2000 m² e 10.000 m² respectivamente, para os DAP mínimos de 5, 10, 20, 25 e 45 centímetros. A maioria dos inventários florestais exploratórios no estado do Amazonas tem sido feita para árvores com DAP maior que 10 centímetros, e os tamanhos variando de 1000 a 2000 m². Os resultados deste trabalho demonstram que o tamanho para o inventário exploratório é adequado, porém, tamanhos diferentes devem ser usados para DAP maior ou igual a 45 centímetros, que é normalmente o DAP mínimo para os planos de exploração madeireira.

O objetivo deste trabalho foi identificar e avaliar o potencial de produção de óleoresina de Copaifera multijuga Hayne, proveniente de 100 árvores re-exploradas e de 36 manejadas pela primeira vez no ano de 2008, na Terra Indígena Igarapé Lourdes (território das etnias Arara e Gavião), em Rondônia. Para cada árvore, foram medidos o diâmetro à altura do peito (DAP) e a quantidade de óleoresina liberada, e identificados os indivíduos, com base em características dendrológicas. Os resultados indicam que a frequência relativa de árvores produtivas teve padrão semelhante entre as re-exploradas (39%) e aquelas manejadas pela primeira vez (41,6%). A produção variou de 0 a 3,6 L/árvore, com média geral de 0,143 L/árvore, sendo 0,157 L/árvore para re-exploradas e 0,104 L/árvore para manejadas pela primeiras vez. Ao excluir as árvores improdutivas, as re-exploradas tiveram maior rendimento médio (0,403 L/árvore) do que as até então intactas (0,250 L/árvore), mas essas diferenças foram estatisticamente não significativas (t, p = 0,37). Árvores reexploradas têm médias diamétricas superiores (58 cm) e diferem estatisticamente (t, p = 0,001) das manejadas pela primeira vez (46 cm). Houve correlação positiva entre produção e diâmetro, sendo mais significativa para as até então intactas (0,61) do que para as re-exploradas (0,27). Apesar da variabilidade do rendimento, observou-se uma ligeira tendência, da menor liberação de óleoresina entre árvores com os menores DAPs (30 a 40 cm), sendo essa uma possível explicação para a menor produção encontrada para as árvores até então inexploradas.

Long-term studies of the dynamics of managed forests in tropical regions are lacking. This study aimed to evaluate the dynamics of a tropical forest, over a 25-year period, that was experimentally logged in 1987 and 1988 and submitted to three different cutting intensities. All trees with diameter at breast height (DBH) ≥ 10 cm have been measured annually since 1990. The three logging intensities that were applied were: light (T1)-trees harvested with DBH ≥ 55 cm; medium (T2)-DBH ≥ 50 cm; and heavy (T3)-DBH ≥ 40 cm. Control plots (T0) were also monitored. The highest mean annual mortality rates (1.82% ± 0.38), recruitment rates (2.93% ± 0.77) and diameter increments (0.30 ± 0.02 cm) occurred in the T3 treatment. Shifts in dynamics of the forest were mainly caused by a striking increase in a fast-growing pioneer species and their high mortality rates. The loss in stocking caused by mortality was greater than to that of replacement by recruitment. The results demonstrated that selective logging altered the natural dynamics of the forest through increased: mortality rates, recruitment and growth rates of the residual trees.

This study sought to classify the productivity of a representative area of tropical forest, as well as to analyze the relationship between the structural variability of pioneer species and the yield of three management regimes. The study area is located at the Tropical Forestry Experimental Station belonging to INPA (National Institute for Amazon Research), approximately 90 km from downtown Manaus, in the State of Amazonas, Brazil. Data were collected from twelve 1 ha sample plots. Diameter was measured annually for all individuals with DBH 10 cm between the years 1990 and 2008. Pioneer species served as the basis for calculating the Diameter Variability Index VI% over time. Three classes of variability were established according to the guide curve technique used for site classification by the dominant height. Biological and probabilistic functions were used to model VI% as a function of time of exploitation, as well as the volumetric yield over time as a function of VI%. There is an inverse relationship between VI% and yield, which allows classification of site yield and conception of global yield models to which present good statistics of precision and adjustment, allowing the prediction of productivity and their dynamics throughout the time.

Este trabalho analisou dados de três inventários florestais realizados na área da Floresta Experimental, pertencente à Embrapa Amazônia Ocidental e localizada no km 54 da BR-174, em Manaus/AM. O objetivo foi estudar a dinâmica da floresta - taxas de incremento, recrutamento e mortalidade - além do estoque de carbono, em uma área de floresta primária, sem qualquer tipo de intervenção. Os inventários foram realizados nos anos de 2005, 2007 e 2010, em 15 parcelas permanentes de 1 hectare cada, onde foram mensuradas todas as árvores com diâmetro a 1,3 m de altura do solo (DAP) superior a 10 cm. Foram calculadas as taxas de recrutamento e mortalidade, os incrementos periódicos anuais (IPAs) em termos de DAP, área basal e volume, as biomassas fresca e seca acima do nível do solo e total e o estoque de carbono da vegetação. As taxas de recrutamento foram de 2% e 1,8% e as de mortalidade foram de 0,95% e 1,3% para os períodos entre 2005 e 2007 e 2007 e 2010, respectivamente. O volume foi de 345,62 m3 ha-1 para o ano de 2005, aumentando para 360,67 m3 ha-1 em 2010, com IPAs de 4,32 m3 ha-1 ano-1 entre 2005 e 2007 e 1,31 m3 ha-1 ano-1 entre 2007 e 2010. O estoque de carbono total teve um acréscimo de 173,63 t C ha-1 em 2005 para 181,01 t C ha-1 em 2010, confirmando que a floresta acumulou carbono no período, atuando assim como sumidouro.This study analyzed data from three forest inventories conducted in the Experimental Forest, which belongs to Embrapa Western Amazon basin and is located at km 54 on BR-174, Manaus / AM. The aim was to study forest dynamics - the rates of recruitment, growth and mortality - in addition to carbon storage in an area of primary forest, without any intervention. The surveys were conducted in the years 2005, 2007 and 2010 in 15 permanent plots of 1 hectare each. There, all trees with diameter at breast height (DBH) above 10 cm were measured. We calculated the rates of recruitment and mortality, the periodic annual increments (PAIs) in terms of DBH, basal area and volume, fresh and dry biomass above the soil and total carbon storage in the vegetation. The recruitment rates were 2.0 percent and 1.8 percent, and mortality were 0.95 percent and 1.3 percent for the periods between 2005 and 2007 and 2007 and 2010, respectively. The volume was 345.62 m3 ha-1 for the year 2005, rising to 360.67 m3 ha-1 in 2010 with PAIs of 4.32 m3 ha-1 yr-1 between 2005 and 2007 and 1.31 m3 ha-1 yr-1 between 2007 and 2010. The total carbon storage increased from 173.63 t C ha-1 in 2005 to 181.01 t C ha-1 in 2010, confirming that the forest accumulated carbon in the period, acting as a sink.

Esta pesquisa teve por objetivo estudar o incremento em diâmetro, área basal e volume, o ingresso e a mortalidade de uma floresta ombrófila aberta/estacional no município de Marcelândia. Os dados são provenientes de 69 parcelas permanentes instaladas e medidas em 2001 e remedidas em 2003 e 2007. Foram avaliados o número de indivíduos e os incrementos em diâmetro, área basal e volume para o período de 2001 a 2007. O ingresso foi determinado como sendo as árvores que atingiram ou ultrapassaram o diâmetro de 17 cm. A mortalidade foi calculada pela soma de todas as árvores com diâmetro igual ou superior a 17 cm encontradas mortas em cada medição. No período considerado de seis anos, teve como resultado para o incremento em diâmetro, área basal e volume respectivamente, 0,34 cm; 0,22 m².ha-1 e 2,11 m³.ha-1. Os valores médios para as taxas de mortalidade e ingresso foram, respectivamente, 0,78% e 0,30%.This research aimed to study the increase in diameter, basal area, volume, the entry, and the mortality of an open/seasonal ombrophilous forest in the city of Marcelândia. Data were collected in 69 permanent plots established in 2001 and remeasured in 2003 and 2007. The number of individuals and the increases in diameter, basal area, and volume for the period 2001 to 2007 were evaluated. The entry was determined by the trees that have reached or exceeded a diameter of 17 cm. Mortality was calculated as the sum of all found dead trees in each measurement with a diameter equal or more than 17 cm. In the considered period of six years, the results to the increase in diameter, basal area, and volume were respectively, 0.34 cm, 0.22 m².ha-1, and 2.11 m³.ha-1. The average values for the mortality rates and entry respectively were 0.78% and 0.30%.

Warming surface temperatures and increasing frequency and duration of widespread droughts threaten the health of natural forests and agricultural crops. High temperatures (HT) and intense droughts can lead to the excessive plant water loss and the accumulation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) resulting in extensive physical and oxidative damage to sensitive plant components including photosynthetic membranes. ROS signaling is tightly integrated with signaling mechanisms of the potent phytohormone abscisic acid (ABA), which stimulates stomatal closure leading to a reduction in transpiration and net photosynthesis, alters hydraulic conductivities, and activates defense gene expression including antioxidant systems. While generally assumed to be produced in roots and transported to shoots following drought stress, recent evidence suggests that a large fraction of plant ABA is produced in leaves via the isoprenoid pathway. Thus, through stomatal regulation and stress signaling which alters water and carbon fluxes, we highlight the fact that ABA lies at the heart of the Carbon-Water-ROS Nexus of plant response to HT and drought stress. We discuss the current state of knowledge of ABA biosynthesis, transport, and degradation and the role of ABA and other isoprenoids in the oxidative stress response. We discuss potential variations in ABA production and stomatal sensitivity among different plant functional types including isohydric/anisohydric and pioneer/climax tree species. We describe experiments that would demonstrate the possibility of a direct energetic and carbon link between leaf ABA biosynthesis and photosynthesis, and discuss the potential for a positive feedback between leaf warming and enhanced ABA production together with reduced stomatal conductance and transpiration. Finally, we propose a new modeling framework to capture these interactions. We conclude by discussing the importance of ABA in diverse tropical ecosystems through increases in the thermotolerance of photosynthesis to drought and heat stress, and the global importance of these mechanisms to carbon and water cycling under climate change scenarios.

Tree mortality is a key driver of forest community composition and carbon dynamics. Strong winds associated with severe convective storms are dominant natural drivers of tree mortality in the Amazon. Why forests vary with respect to their vulnerability to wind events and how the predicted increase in storm events might affect forest ecosystems within the Amazon are not well understood. We found that windthrows are common in the Amazon region extending from northwest (Peru, Colombia, Venezuela, and west Brazil) to central Brazil, with the highest occurrence of windthrows in the northwest Amazon. More frequent winds, produced by more frequent severe convective systems, in combination with well-known processes that limit the anchoring of trees in the soil, help to explain the higher vulnerability of the northwest Amazon forests to winds. Projected increases in the frequency and intensity of convective storms in the Amazon have the potential to increase wind-related tree mortality. A forest demographic model calibrated for the northwestern and the central Amazon showed that northwestern forests are more resilient to increased wind-related tree mortality than forests in the central Amazon. Our study emphasizes the importance of including wind-related tree mortality in model simulations for reliable predictions of the future of tropical forests and their effects on the Earth’ system.

Este trabalho teve como objetivo estudar a composição e estrutura de um estrato arbóreo da floresta tropical úmida em Alta Floresta - MT, determinando os padrões de semelhança com outras regiões da Amazônia brasileira. O estudo foi realizado em uma área de 2 hectares, dividida em 20 parcelas de 10x 100m, onde foram mensurados a altura e o DAP ≥ 10 cm de todos os indivíduos. Para avaliação do grau de similaridade entre a composição florística e estrutura arbórea de Alta Floresta com as nove regiões pertencentes à Amazônia Legal brasileira, utilizou-se o método de agrupamento hierárquico aglomerativo com ligações pela média dos grupos (UPGMA), por meio do índice de Sorensen (qualitativo). Para a ordenação, foi utilizado o mesmo programa, utilizando a Escalonamento Multidimensional não-métrica (NMS) por meio do índice de Jaccard aplicado à presença e ausência de famílias e gêneros. Para análise de similaridade entre as 10 regiões, comparando a matriz de distâncias físicas entre elas com as matrizes de composição de famílias e gêneros, utilizou-se o programa PATN por meio do Teste de Mantel com o índice de Jaccard. A região apresentou 1101 indivíduos, pertencentes a 32 famílias, 54 gêneros e 68 espécies. A família com maior riqueza de espécie foi Leguminosae. A espécie Helicostilys podogyne e o gênero Cecropia sp. foram as mais importantes no levantamento. A floresta tropical úmida de Alta Floresta não se assemelhou com nenhuma das nove regiões comparadas neste estudo.This paper deals with the composition and structure of a pristine tropical rainforest using likelihood patterns to compare it with other Amazonian sites. This work was carried out in Alta Floresta, Mato Grosso. Our ground truth was obtained from a two-hectare plot, which was divided into 20 plots of 10 by 100 m each. In each plot, all trees with dbh = 10 cm were recorded. To evaluate the level of similarity between the Alta Floresta and other nine Amazonian sites we used the hierarchy clustering method linked by group means (UPGMA) through Sorensen index (qualitative). For ordination, we used the same method based on multidimensional non-metric scaling (NMS) through Jaccard index applied to presence or absence of botanical families or genera. The software PATN was used to run Mantel test with Jaccard index, which was, in turn, used for the similarity analysis among sites. The studied site presented 1,101 individuals distributed in 32 botanical families, 54 genera e 68 species. The richest family was Leguminosae. Helicostilys podogyne and Cecropia sp. were the most important species of the studied area. The Alta Floresta site did not present any similarity when compared to other Amazonian sites.

ResumoO objetivo do presente trabalho foi estimar a quantidade de carbono fixada (em plantio de três anos de idade) na vegetação arbórea do projeto POMAR, na cidade de São Paulo/SP, localizado às margens do Rio Pinheiros. Foram feitas medidas de altura e CAP (circunferência à altura do peito) de dezesseis espécies. Na área estudada de 4.612 m2havia 920 árvores. O estoque de carbono, três anos após o plantio, foi estimado em 67 t, que equivale a um estoque de 145,26 t de C ha-1. O carbono seqüestrado estimado por um hectare equivale à emissão de vinte veículos. Concluiu-se que o plantio de árvores em cidades contribui para o sequestro de C devendo ser uma prática incentivada em conjunto com redução de emissões.AbstractThe research goal was to estimate the amount of Carbon that was fixed in a three-year-old plantation of tree species at the POMAR project in São Paulo city, on the Pinheiros River banks. The diameter at breast height (DBH) and height of sixteen tree species were measured and recorded. The studied plot had 4,612.5 m2 and 920 trees. Carbon accumulation was 67t three years after planting, which corresponds to a stock of 145,26 t of C ha-1. The estimated carbon captured by 1 ha is equivalent to the emission of 20 vehicles. It was concluded that the planting of trees in cities contributes in the sequestration of Carbon and should be an encouraged practice in association with emission reduction.

Utilizando um modelo estocástico, foi projetada a distribuição diamétrica futura de uma floresta submetida à exploração seletiva de madeira na Amazônia Ocidental. Foram utilizados dados de cinco parcelas permanentes localizadas no PC Pedro Peixoto, no Acre. A primeira medição das parcelas ocorreu em 1996, a exploração florestal em 1997 e as re-medições em 1999 e 2001. A principal variável utilizada foi o diâmetro à altura do peito (DAP). A matriz de transição probabilística (Cadeia de Markov) foi utilizada para fazer a projeção da distribuição diamétrica do número de árvores sobreviventes nas classes diamétricas. O modelo foi primeiramente testado para fazer a projeção para 2001, tendo como base as observações de 1999 e seu passado imediato (1997). Quando comparadas às projeções feitas para 2001 e as medições de campo (2001), o teste Qui-quadrado mostrou que não houve diferença significativa entre freqüências esperadas e observadas na distribuição diamétrica (p=0,05). A projeção para 2005 indica que a taxa de mortalidade será próxima a de 2001, e se repetida a taxa de recrutamento em 2005 o total de árvores será maior que o observado em 2001. Esse comportamento da floresta indica que não existe um padrão definido para a dinâmica nas classes diamétricas em termos de mortalidade ou crescimento, apresentando um comportamento aleatório ou probabilístico, justificando a eficiência da Cadeia de Markov para projetar a dinâmica da floresta estudada, podendo auxiliar na determinação do ciclo de corte ou mostrando as tendências que a floresta de hoje apresentará em um futuro próximo.The diameter distribution of an experimental forest stand in the Western Amazon was projected using a stochastic model after selective logging. The study was developed using data from five permanent plots located in the colonization project Pedro Peixoto, in the state of Acre. Initial measurements of diameter at breast height (DBH) were taken in 1996. The forest was selectively logged in 1997 and DBHs were re-measured in two different occasions, 1999 and 2001. A probabilistic transition matrix (Markov Chain) was used to project the diameter distribution of the number of surviving trees in each diameter class. The model was first tested to project the diameter distribution in 2001, based on DBH measurements from 1997 and 1999. When the projected diameter distribution for 2001 was compared with the field data from the same year, a Chi-squared test (α = 0.05) showed that there was not significant difference between the expected and observed diameter distribution. After that, a projection for 2005 (four years in the future) was run using DBH measurements from 1997 to 2001, indicating that mortality rate was similar to 2001. If repeated the rate of recruitment of 2005, the total number of trees will be higher than observed in 2001. The dynamics of the studied forest suggests that there is not a definitive pattern to changes in diameter distribution and mortality, which indicates a stochastic or probabilistic pattern. This pattern is better modeled by the Markov Chain to project the forest dynamics of studied area, and can help on determination of timber harvesting or the tendencies of forest dynamics in a near future.

A análise da produtividade individual de espécies permite descrever o comportamento das mesmas em ecossistemas florestais. O objetivo deste trabalho foi analisar a produtividade de quatro espécies arbóreas em um período de seis anos (2000-2006) em uma área de terra firme na região de Manaus, AM. A produtividade foi estimada indiretamente por meio da utilização de equações alométricas individuais geradas e dados de inventários florestais. Foram selecionadas Pouteria reticulata Eyma (Sapotaceae), Micrandra siphonioides Benth. (Euphorbiaceae), Protium hebetatum Daly (Burseraceae) e Eschweilera wachenheimii Sand (Lecythidaceae) por apresentarem alto índice de valor de importância na área. As equações foram geradas a partir de um arquivo de dados; devido ao reduzido número de indivíduos por espécie foi necessária a utilização de um método não paramétrico, sendo escolhido o "Jackknife". As equações foram aplicadas às árvores das espécies selecionadas localizadas em duas parcelas permanentes com as informações dos inventários florestais dos anos de 2000, 2002, 2004 e 2006. Os resultados mostram indícios de confiabilidade do método, as equações geradas apresentaram altos valores de coeficiente de determinação (R² > 0,93) e baixos valores de erro padrão da estimativa (s y.x < 0,692), evidenciando sua consistência e precisão. As taxas de produtividade foram específicas para cada espécie, entretanto, o padrão de produtividade das espécies E. wachenheimii, P. reticulata e P. hebetatum foram semelhantes, diferindo da M. siphonioides. A maior produtividade se refere à espécie M. siphonioides e a menor à P. hebetatum. A variação da produtividade intra-específica foi superior à variação inter-específica, com P. reticulata apresentando o maior coeficiente de variação.Individual productivity analysis of species helps describe their comportment in forest ecosystems. The objective of this work was to analyze the productivity of four tree species during a period of six years (2000-2006) in a "terra firme" area near Manaus, Amazonas. The productivity was indirectly estimated by using individual allometric equations along with data from a continuous forest inventory. The following species were selected for this study: Pouteria reticulata Eyma (Sapotaceae), Micrandra siphonioides Benth. (Euphorbiaceae), Protium hebetatum Daly (Burseraceae) and Eschweilera wachenheimii Sand (Lecythidaceae). These were selected because they presented a very high importance value index in the area. The raw data used to developed specific equations were taken from an existing set of data. Samples for each species numbered less than 30 individuals; for this reason, "Jackknife" was used. The "jackknifed" equations were used to estimate aboveground biomass of individuals which occurred in two permanent sample plots measured in 2000, and re-measured in 2002, 2004 and 2006. The "jackknife" method was consistent and reliable, with high and significant determination coefficients (r² > 0,93) and low values of standard error of estimates (sy.x < 0,692). The productivity rates of E. wachenheimii, P. reticulata e P. hebetatum were similar, different from M. siphonioides. The highest productivity was reported for M. siphonioides, and the lowest for P. hebetatum. The intra-specific productivity variability was superior to the inter-specific, with P. reticulata showing the highest variability coefficient.

Na Amazônia, o fogo é ainda o principal trato cultural utilizado no preparo de solo para agricultura e pecuária, tanto pelos pequenos como pelos grandes fazendeiros. Combinando à baixa fertilidade do solo e ao baixo preço da terra, assim que as fontes naturais de nutrientes são exauridas, as áreas são abandonadas e novas florestas primárias são derrubadas e queimadas. Por conta disso, grandes extensões de área da Amazônia são cobertas por florestas secundárias originadas de áreas abandonadas pela agricultura ou pastagem. Este estudo foi conduzido em uma área experimental usada em uma pesquisa sobre eficiência de combustão e emissão de gás carbônico da floresta amazônica, localizada aproximadamente 50 km ao norte de Manaus. A vegetação da área experimental foi derrubada e queimada em 1991, simulando as condições em que o pequeno agricultor prepara o solo para plantios de subsistência. Dez anos após a queimada, a floresta secundária ainda é bastante diferente da floresta original. As espécies vegetais dominantes são, principalmente, das famílias botânicas Annonaceae, Arecaceae, Burseraceae, Cecropiaceae, Euphorbiaceae, Fabaceae, Lecythidaceae, Melastomataceae, Mimosaceae, Sapindaceae e Sterculiaceae. O estoque de biomassa recuperado, dez anos após a formação da capoeira estudada, é de aproximadamente 16%, ou seja, a capoeira apresenta um estoque médio de 56,2 t.ha-1 ± 12 (IC 95%), enquanto que o estoque da floresta primária é de 339,7 t.ha-1 ± 66,7 (IC 95 %).In Amazonia, fire is widely used for soil preparation in the agriculture and cattle ranching, either by small or big farmers. The combination of low fertility of the soil and low price of the land usually leads to typical shift cultivation as soon as the natural sources of nutrients are exhausted, when new primary forests are felled and burned. Due to that, secondary forests originated from abandoned agriculture or pasture activity projects cover huge areas in the Brazilian Amazônia. This study was carried out in the Tropical Forestry Experimental Station (EEST/INPA), around 50 kilometers north of Manaus, the capital of Amazonas State. A secondary forest ("capoeira"), 10 years old, was selected for this study; its land use history includes clear cutting followed by fire. Two different samples of primary forests were included as control plots for the "capoeira". All individuals with diameter at breast height (DBH) greater than 5 cm were measured and recorded in a single area of 0,4 ha for each treatment. Ten years after burning, the secondary forest is still very different in comparison with primary forest, in terms of important parameters of the vegetation structure, such as floristic composition, abundance, frequency, dominance, index of value of importance (IVI) and the diameter distribution. In "capoeira" studied the dominant species are mainly of the following botanical families: Annonaceae, Arecaceae, Burseraceae, Cecropiaceae, Euphorbiaceae, Fabaceae, Lecythidaceae, Melastomataceae, Mimosaceae, Sapindaceae and Sterculiaceae. The estimates of dry biomass were 56.2 t. ha-1 ± 12 (CI 95%) and 339.7 t.ha-1 ± 66.7 (CI 95%) for "capoeira" and primary forest, respectively.

Os fatores que envolvem os processos da dinâmica da floresta influenciam a sua biodiversidade e, portanto, a qualidade da floresta. A definição de estratégias que envolve a proteção e o uso adequado da floresta manejada e a recuperação de áreas já degradadas tornam-se possível com o estudo da estrutura e dinâmica da floresta primária por meio de informações como a mortalidade, o recrutamento e a permanência das árvores no sistema florestal. Este trabalho teve como objetivo avaliar a dinâmica de uma floresta não perturbada e fazer projeções da dinâmica florestal usando a matriz de transição probabilística (Cadeia de Markov). As taxas de recrutamento, mortalidade e incremento foram determinadas a partir de inventários florestais realizados em dois transectos, nos sentidos Norte-Sul e Leste-Oeste (20 x 2500 m cada, totalizando 10 ha), localizados no km 50 da BR 174, na estrada vicinal ZF-2, Manaus/AM, nos anos de 2000 e 2004. A floresta acumulou 8,34 t.ha-1.ano-1 de biomassa fresca acima do solo. De acordo com projeção para 2008, o número total de árvores diminuirá em 2,67% (de 5987 indivíduos (2004) para 5827 (2008)) e a mortalidade será 15% maior (de 264 (2004) para 311 (2008)). O teste Qui-quadrado mostrou que não há diferença significativa (1% de probabilidade) entre as informações coletadas e projetadas. Esses resultados permitem concluir que a Cadeia de Markov é um eficiente instrumento para projetar a dinâmica da floresta natural, contribuindo para o planejamento em curto prazo das atividades que utilizam os recursos florestais.To combine protection and utilization of forest resources in the tropics, the understanding of forest dynamics is essential. It is also important in the definition of strategies for rehabilitation of degraded areas. In Forestry, forest dynamics could be translated as the understanding of recruitment, mortality and biomass increment rates over time. For this study, these rates were estimated based on measurements carried out in 2000 and 2004 over two transects measuring 20 by 2500 m (5 hectares) each, in Manaus region. This paper deals with forest dynamics of a pristine forest based on the probabilistic transition matrix (the first-order Markov Chain) approach. The main objective is to report 4-year (2000 to 2004) changes in the forest structure. Diameter distribution and tree mortality will be projected ahead to 2008 (t+2), based upon a 4-year period of observations completed in 2004 (t+1) and its immediate past in 2000 (t). In terms of fresh aboveground biomass, this site accumulated 8.34 t.ha-1.ano-1. The chi ² test has shown no statistical difference (p = 0.01) between observed diameter frequency and the expected projected by Markov Chain. This result indicates that the Markov Chain approach is a reliable tool to project the forest dynamics on a short-term basis. In 2008, the total number of individuals will have a decrease of 2.7%, and the mortality rate will 15% higher than in 2004.

Este trabalho analisou o desempenho do Brasil no cumprimento das obrigações definidas pela Convenção Quadro das Nações Unidas sobre Mudança do Clima (Art. 4.1), do ponto de vista do Direito Internacional e do Direito Positivo Interno, especialmente as normas de Direito Ambiental. Comparou-se a legislação nacional com as normas oriundas da Convenção e as atividades implementadas pelos organismos nacionais, incluindo políticas e programas ambientais, procurando identificar pontos de convergência e de conflito para indicar o que precisa ser feito e permitir, onde necessário, a adaptação das normas internas à consecução dos objetivos traçados. Pretendeu-se demonstrar como se dá a participação do Amazonas nos compromissos para com as mudanças climáticas e, de acordo com os resultados alcançados, oferecer sugestões à gestão de políticas públicas voltadas para o cumprimento das metas traçadas pela Convenção e assumidas pelo Brasil.This work has analyzed the performance of Brazil in relation to the fulfillment of the obligations defined by the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (Article 4.1), from the point of view of the International Law, Internal Positive Law and especially the rules of Environmental Law. It compared the national legislation with the norms originated from the Convention and the activities implemented by the national organisms, including policies and environmental programs, trying to identify the convergent and conflicting points in order to indicate what has to be done, and to allow, where necessary, norms to accomplish the objective planned. This work aimed to show the Amazonas State commitments in relation to the Convention, and to offer suggestions to the administration of public policies directed to the fulfillment of aims determined by the Convention and undertaken by Brazil.

Forest inventory, stem core sampling, and meteorological observations were carried out in a dense tropical forest in Novo Aripuanã, Amazonas. In the research quadrat (1.9 ha), 210 woody species belonging to over 38 botanical families, and 14 palm species were identified. The aboveground biomass, which was estimated to be 202.72 t/ha, was standard for Amazonia, but the forest was considered to repeat regeneration by tree-fall gaps because early succession species such as Iryanthera ssp. (Myristicaceae), Croton sp. (Euphorbiaceae), and palms were large in number. The relationship between tree height and percentage of vessel area in stem cross sections in the 2001 and 2002 growth rings had a positive correlation coefficient. The enlargement of vessel area was to improve the efficiency for absorbing sap against gravity, which means that the increase in pore zone leads to weakening the resistance of stems against squalls. From meteorological measurements, it was found that diurnal downward short-wave radiation at forest canopy was a few times to several dozen times as large as that at forest floor, and in consequence, net radiation surpassed 600 w/m2 in the canopy, while it was about 30 w/m2 on the floor. The radiation balance in tree-fall gaps was similar to that of forest canopy, but the gaps were characterized to have a large temperature difference between day and night (12 to 13 oC). Radiative cooling easily condensed humid air when temperatures decreased to 27-28 oC, and the condensation each night amounted to 5-7 g/m3, about double that of closed forests.

Apesar da baixa atividade de usos do solo no Estado, a produção de madeira não é sustentável. Isso é causado, principalmente, pela falta de infra-estrutura dos órgãos responsáveis para monitorar os planos de manejo florestal e de corte raso para agricultura e pecuária. Este estudo apresenta análise de alguns fatores de produção, industrialização e comercialização da indústria madeireira do Estado do Amazonas, visando viabilizar diagnóstico do setor florestal. Essas informações possibilitam o estabelecimento de políticas florestais para a região. Fez-se a definição das zonas de produção, onde os principais municípios produtores de serrados foram Manaus, Itacoatiara, Manacapuru e Parintins; e de compensados e laminados foram Manaus e Itacoatiara. Após essa definição os dados foram coletados diretamente nas indústrias, através de questionários e entrevistas para coletar as seguintes informações: principais espécies consumidas, produtividade das indústrias, origem da matéria-prima, transporte, qualificação de pessoal e treinamento, principais problemas tecnológicos e exportação. Em 2000, a produção estadual foi de 323.400m³ de madeira em toras. Mais de 50 espécies diferentes são usadas nas serrarias, das quais 16 representaram 80% do volume total, sendo as 5 espécies (louro inhamui,angelim pedra,amapá,assacu e maçaranduba) contribuíram com 49,34% do consumo total; quanto as indústrias de compensado e laminado estas usaram, 17 espécies onde as 5 principais (muiratinga, sumaúma, copaíba, assacu e amapá) representaram 62,71% do consumo total.Também foram coletados dados complementares junto ao IBAMA, SUFRAMA, SEFAZ e IBGE.Despite low land activities, hardwood production is not sustainable. This is caused mainly by the lack of infrastructure on the part of the responsible organs that monitor forest management plans and clear cutting for pasture and agriculture. This study dealt with forest industries of the State of Amazonas to better understand the processes of production, industrialization and commercialization, and evaluate their influence on the sustainability of tropical forests. This information is very important in order to establish forest policies for the region. After defining the main forest industry (producers of lumber, plywood and veneer) zones of the State, data were collected directly from the forest industries as well as from IBAMA, SUFRAMA, SEFAZ and IBGE. Manaus, Itacoatiara, Manacapuru and Parintins were the main municipalities of sawn products; and Manaus and Itacoatiara for plywood and veneer. Questionnaires and interviews were used to collect information such as main tree species, transformation productivity, origin of raw material, transportation, personnel qualification and training, and exportation. In 2000, the annual roundwood production in the State of Amazonas was 323,400m³ (divided equally among sawmill and plywood and veneer industries). More than 50 different tree species are used in the Amazonas sawmills; but only 16 represent 80% of the total volume. Plywood and veneer industries use 17 tree species. Louro inhamui, angelim pedra, amapá, assacu and maçaranduba are the main species for sawmills; while muiratinga, sumaúma, copaíba, assacu and amapá for plywood and veneer industries.

Este trabalho tem como objetivo analisar padrões de crescimento individual de diversas árvores que ocorrem em duas toposseqüências (direções Norte-Sul e Leste-Oeste), de uma amostra representativa da floresta de terra-firme na Amazônia Central. Foram selecionados de forma aleatória, aproximadamente, 300 indivíduos, sendo 150 em cada toposseqüência, distribuídos em mesmas proporções nas três classes topográficas (platô, encosta e baixio) e nas três classes de diâmetro (10 ≤ DAP < 30 cm; 30 ≤ DAP< 50 cm e DAP≥ 50 cm). Em cada uma dessas árvores foi instalada uma fita metálica, com extremidades parcialmente sobrepostas e ligadas por uma mola; o avanço de uma das pontas, dentro de uma abertura, representa o crescimento em circunferência, que foi medido com um paquímetro digital. As medições foram realizadas mensalmente ao longo de 19 meses, de junho/1999 a dezembro/2000; neste estudo foram considerados apenas os 12 meses do ano 2000. O padrão individual de crescimento em diâmetro varia muito com o passar dos meses (p = 0,00) e apenas razoavelmente quando os meses são interagidos com as classes de diâmetro (p 0,08); por outro lado, há fraca uma evidência (p = 0,25) quando as classes topográficas são acrescentadas na interação anterior e praticamente nenhuma evidência (p = 0,89) quando é analisada a interação meses e classes topográficas. Dentre todas as árvores selecionadas (300 indivíduos), foram mantidas na análise 272 indivíduos. A média do incremento anual em diâmetro, considerando as 272 árvores monitoradas, foi de 1,64 ± 0,21 mm (p = 0,05), ficando dentro do intervalo dos incrementos obtidos no BIONTE e FLONA Tapajós, que é de 1,5 a 2 mm por ano.

This study investigated the regeneration variation of five commercially valuable tree species in relation to different intensities of felling in fourteen 4-ha plots in an area under experimental forest management. This experiment was carried out in a typical Amazonian tropical forest sample on "terra-firme," in Manaus (AM). Plots were logged 7 and 8 years (1987 and 1988), or 3 years (1993) before the study. All trees with height greater than 2 m, and diameter at breast height (DBH) smaller than 10 cm were measured. Only Aniba hostmanniana, Ocotea aciphylla, Licaria pachycarpa, Eschweilera coriacea and Goupia glabra were sufficiently common for individual analyses. These species have high timber values in the local market. Eight years after logging, the species responded differently to logging intensities. The numbers of individuals of Goupia glabra and Aniba hostmanniana were positively related to the intensity of logging, while Ocotea aciphylla, Licaria pachycarpa, and Eschweilera coriacea showed no statistically significant response. In the most recently (1993) logged areas, Goupia glabra and Aniba hostmanniana had higher numbers of individuals than the control plots.

C1 metabolism in plants is known to be involved in photorespiration, nitrogen and amino acid metabolism, as well as methylation and biosynthesis of metabolites and biopolymers. Although the flux of carbon through the C1 pathway is thought to be large, its intermediates are difficult to measure and relatively little is known about this potentially ubiquitous pathway. In this study, we evaluated the C1 pathway and its integration with the central metabolism using aqueous solutions of 13C-labeled C1 and C2 intermediates delivered to branches of the tropical species Inga edulis via the transpiration stream. Delivery of [13C]methanol and [13C]formaldehyde rapidly stimulated leaf emissions of [13C]methanol, [13C]formaldehyde, [13C]formic acid, and 13CO2, confirming the existence of the C1 pathway and rapid interconversion between methanol and formaldehyde. However, while [13C]formate solutions stimulated emissions of 13CO2, emissions of [13C]methanol or [13C]formaldehyde were not detected, suggesting that once oxidation to formate occurs it is rapidly oxidized to CO2 within chloroplasts. 13C-labeling of isoprene, a known photosynthetic product, was linearly related to 13CO2 across C1 and C2 ([13C2]acetate and [2-13C]glycine) substrates, consistent with reassimilation of C1, respiratory, and photorespiratory CO2. Moreover, [13C]methanol and [13C]formaldehyde induced a quantitative labeling of both carbon atoms of acetic acid emissions, possibly through the rapid turnover of the chloroplastic acetyl-CoA pool via glycolate oxidation. The results support a role of the C1 pathway to provide an alternative carbon source for glycine methylation in photorespiration, enhance CO2 concentrations within chloroplasts, and produce key C2 intermediates (e.g., acetyl-CoA) central to anabolic and catabolic metabolism.

The Eschweilera genus has great ecological and economic importance due to its wide abundance in the Amazon basin. One potential use for the Eschweilera genus is in forest management, where just a few trees are removed per hectare. In order to improve the forest management in the Amazon, this study assessed two critical issues: volume equations fitted for a single genus and the development of a non-destructive method using climbing techniques. The equipment used to measure the sample trees included: climbing rope, ascenders, descenders, and carabiners. To carry out the objectives of this study, 64 trees with diameter at breast height (DBH) ≥ 10 cm were selected and measured in ZF-2 Tropical Forestry Station near the city of Manaus, Brazil. Four single input models with DBH and four dual input models with DBH and merchantable height (H) were tested. The Husch model (V = a × DBHb) presented the best performance (R2 = 0.97). This model does not require the merchantable height, which is an important advantage, because of the difficulty in measuring this variable in tropical forests. When the merchantable height data are collected using accurate methods, the Schumacher and Hall model (V = a × DBHb × Hc) is the most appropriated. Tree climbing techniques with the use of ropes, as a non-destructive method, is a good alternative to measure the merchantable height, the diameter along the stem, and also estimate the tree volume (m3) of the Eschweilera genus in the Amazon basin.

Windthrows are a recurrent disturbance in Amazonia and are an important driver of forest dynamics and carbon storage. In this study, we present for the first time the seasonal and interannual variability of windthrows, focusing on Central Amazonia, and discuss the potential meteorological factors associated with this variability. Landsat images over the 1998–2010 time period were used to detect the occurrence of windthrows, which were identified based on their spectral characteristics and shape. Here, we found that windthrows occurred every year but were more frequent between September and February. Organized convective activity associated with multicell storms embedded in mesoscale convective systems, such as northerly squall lines (that move from northeast to southwest) and southerly squall lines (that move from southwest to northeast) can cause windthrows. We also found that southerly squall lines occurred more frequently than their previously reported ~50 year interval. At the interannual scale, we did not find an association between El Niño-Southern Oscillation (ENSO) and windthrows.

Canopy gaps created by wind-throw events, or blowdowns, create a complex mosaic of forest patches varying in disturbance intensity and recovery in the Central Amazon. Using field and remote sensing data, we investigated the short-term (four-year) effects of large (>2000 m(2)) blowdown gaps created during a single storm event in January 2005 near Manaus, Brazil, to study (i) how forest structure and composition vary with disturbance gradients and (ii) whether tree diversity is promoted by niche differentiation related to wind-throw events at the landscape scale. In the forest area affected by the blowdown, tree mortality ranged from 0 to 70%, and was highest on plateaus and slopes. Less impacted areas in the region affected by the blowdown had overlapping characteristics with a nearby unaffected forest in tree density (583 ± 46 trees ha(-1)) (mean ± 99% Confidence Interval) and basal area (26.7 ± 2.4 m(2) ha(-1)). Highly impacted areas had tree density and basal area as low as 120 trees ha(-1) and 14.9 m(2) ha(-1), respectively. In general, these structural measures correlated negatively with an index of tree mortality intensity derived from satellite imagery. Four years after the blowdown event, differences in size-distribution, fraction of resprouters, floristic composition and species diversity still correlated with disturbance measures such as tree mortality and gap size. Our results suggest that the gradients of wind disturbance intensity encompassed in large blowdown gaps (>2000 m(2)) promote tree diversity. Specialists for particular disturbance intensities existed along the entire gradient. The existence of species or genera taking an intermediate position between undisturbed and gap specialists led to a peak of rarefied richness and diversity at intermediate disturbance levels. A diverse set of species differing widely in requirements and recruitment strategies forms the initial post-disturbance cohort, thus lending a high resilience towards wind disturbances at the community level.

O sensoriamento remoto (SR), sistema de informação geográfica (SIG) e sistema de posicionamento global (GPS) são importantes ferramentas para as diversas etapas de inventários florestais, inclusive para as estimativas de biomassa. O objetivo deste trabalho foi consolidar uma metodologia para a espacialização ou mapeamento das variáveis biofísicas utilizando dados de campo e técnicas de sensoriamento remoto. Os dados de campo foram provenientes do sistema de inventário florestal contínuo (IFC) do laboratório de manejo florestal do Instituto Nacional de Pesquisa na Amazônia(LMF-INPA) na região de Maués (AM). Os dados de sensoriamento remoto foram obtidos de imagens do sensor TM, do satélite Landsat 5, e do modelo digital de elevação (MDE) da missão SRTM (Shuttle Radar Topography Mission). Foram ajustadas equações e realizadas classificações para as estimativas e espacialização das variáveis biofísicas. A área de estudo obteve uma média de 485,3 ±1,9% indivíduos por hectare e de 578,3 ±3,4% toneladas de biomassa fresca. As equações ajustadas não apresentaram bom desempenho. O maior R2 ajustado foi de 0,24 para o volume e a melhor distribuição dos resíduos foi para a Densidade. A espacialização da biomassa foi realizada por meio da classificação isocluster da topografia, incluindo a altitude, declividade e curvatura da região. Os estoques estimados para a área de estudo foram de 662,6± 13% e 189,2 ±13% milhões de toneladas de biomassa e carbono, respectivamente. A distribuição da biomassa na área de estudo foi heterogênea. áreas declivosas possuem maior proporção de árvores desenraizadas quando comparadas com, as áreas planas. As clareiras abertas pela queda das árvores favorecem a regeneração que mantém o número de árvores por ha estável, porém com menor área basal e consequentemente menor biomassa. áreas planas de altitude aproximadamente de 50 m tendem a ter maior biomassa que áreas planas e mais altas (~90 m). A diferença de biomassa pode estar associada ao menor número de indivíduos por hectares nas áreas altas. O método da classificação não supervisionada isocluster da topografia utilizando a altitude, a declividade e curvatura do terreno é um método simples, demanda pouco processamento e explicou bem a variação da biomassa nesta região.

Em 1979 a técnica de modelagem de distribuições diamétricas por funções probabilísticas foi aplicada pela primeira vez por Hyink & Moser na prognose do crescimento e da produção de florestas multiâneas e heterogêneas. Entretanto, atualmente, poucos trabalhos a utilizam no planejamento da produção dessas florestas por desconhecerem a viabilidade operacional da técnica. Sendo assim, esse trabalho visa apresentar uma revisão das características que propiciam a modelagem do crescimento e da produção por classe diamétrica, destacando a importância da dinâmica do recrutamento, mortalidade, sobrevivência, bem como dos atributos populacionais correlacionados à modelagem da distribuição de Weibull, apresentando as particularidades estatísticas utilizadas na modelagem da produção por esse método. doi: 10.4336/2012.pfb.32.70.93

Neste trabalho é apresentada uma revisão das atividades de manejo de florestas tropicais úmidas, incluindo conceitos, histórico, aplicações c pesquisas experimentais sobre o tema, em importantes países tropicais da Ásia, África c América, com ênfase na Amazônia Brasileira. É também apresentada uma análise da situação das florestas tropicais úmidas e das perspectivas quanto ao desenvolvimento florestal da região amazônica, depois da Rio-92 e de outros importantes movimentos ambientalistas que ocorreram nos últimos anos. Manejar a floresta sob regime de rendimento sustentado é uma forma inteligente de uso do solo amazônico. É aplicável em muitas sub-regiões da Amazônia, mas não para a região toda. Não há modelo específico de manejo para as distintas indústrias madeireiras c, a tendência atual, é a diversificação de produtos para que a sustentabilidade econômica do manejo seja mais facilmente alcançada.

Debate continues over the adequacy of existing field plots to sufficiently capture Amazon forest dynamics to estimate regional forest carbon balance. Tree mortality dynamics are particularly uncertain due to the difficulty of observing large, infrequent disturbances. A recent paper (Chambers et al 2013 Proc. Natl Acad. Sci. 110 3949–54) reported that Central Amazon plots missed 9–17% of tree mortality, and here we address ‘why’ by elucidating two distinct mortality components: (1) variation in annual landscape-scale average mortality and (2) the frequency distribution of the size of clustered mortality events. Using a stochastic-empirical tree growth model we show that a power law distribution of event size (based on merged plot and satellite data) is required to generate spatial clustering of mortality that is consistent with forest gap observations. We conclude that existing plots do not sufficiently capture losses because their placement, size, and longevity assume spatially random mortality, while mortality is actually distributed among differently sized events (clusters of dead trees) that determine the spatial structure of forest canopies.

O estudo fitossociológico levou em consideração duas áreas localizadas em Carajás e Marabá, na região sul do Pará. A amostragem abordou dois níveis: 1) Indivíduos com DAP ≥ 20cm em parcelas de 20m x 200m e, II) Indivíduos com 5cm ≤ DAP ≤ 20cm em duas sub-parcelas de 10m x 10m no início c final das parcelas. Todos os indivíduos do segundo nível foram considerados como regeneração natural do povoamento adulto. Em Carajás utilizou-se 35 (trinta e cinco) unidades amostrais (parcelas) e em Marabá 22 (vinte c duas). Do ponto de vista de composição florística, as áreas estudadas apresentaram-se heterogêneas, com índices de Shanon-Weaver estimados em 3,66 e 3,71, respectivamente, para Carajás e Marabá. A equação hipsométrica comum que melhor ajustou os dados observados foi: h = [ d 2.38 + 0.1387 h ] 2 As abundâncias médias foram 131,92 e 127,85 indivíduos/ha, respectivamente, para Carajás e Marabá. As estimativas de área basal foram 15,41 e 17,35 m2/ha nas regiões de Carajás e Marabá, respectivamente. A função de densidade I (Meyer) que melhor ajustou os dados de freqüência por classe de diâmetro (Fi) em função do centro de classe (DAP), para Carajás, foi Fi= e(9,56330614 - 0,07139847d) e Fi =e(8,96125691 - 0,06937877d) para Marabá. Também estimou-se que cerca de 36% das espécies existentes nas regiões estudadas possuem valor econômico no mercado madeireiro.
