Search

Gamma-ray burst (GRB) afterglow emission can be observed from sub-TeV to radio wavelengths, though only 6.6\% of observed GRBs present radio afterglows. We examine GRB radio light curves (LCs) to look for the presence of radio plateaus, resembling the plateaus observed in X-ray and optical. We analyze 404 GRBs from the literature with observed radio afterglow and fit 82 GRBs with at least 5 data points with a broken power law (BPL) model, requiring 4 parameters. From these, we find 18 GRBs that present a break feature resembling a plateau. We conduct the first multi-wavelength study of the Dainotti correlation between the luminosity $L_a$ and the rest-frame time of break $T_a^*$ for those 18 GRBs, concluding that the correlation exists and resembles the corresponding correlation in X-ray and optical wavelengths after correction for evolutionary effects. We compare the $T_a^*$ for the radio sample with $T_a^*$ values in X-ray and optical data (Dainotti et al. 2013, 2020b), finding significantly later break times in radio. We propose that this late break time and compatibility in slope suggests either a long-lasting plateau or the passage of a spectral break in the radio band. We also correct the distribution of the isotropic energy $E_{\rm iso}$ vs. the rest-frame burst duration $T^*_{90}$ for evolutionary effects and conclude that there is no significant difference between the $T^*_{90}$ distribution for the radio LCs with a break and those without., 13 pages, 6 figures, 1 table. The detection of the high-energy neutrino IC-170922A in spatial (within the error region) and temporal flare activity correlation with the blazar TXS 0506+056 allowed these objects to be considered as progenitor sources of neutrinos. Besides this, no more detection of this kind was reported. Some other neutrinos detected by IceCube show a spatial correlation (within the error region) from other Fermi-LAT detected sources. However, these objects did not show a flare activity like TXS 0506+056. Assuming a lepto-hadronic scenario through p$\gamma$ interactions, this work describes the SED in some objects from the fourth catalog of active galactic nuclei (AGNs) detected by the Fermi Gamma-ray Space Telescope Large Area Telescope (4LAC) sources, which are in spatial correlation with neutrinos detected by IceCube. The Earth is bombarded by ultra-relativistic particles, known as cosmic rays (CRs). CRs with energies up to a few PeV (=10$^{15}$ eV), the knee in the particle spectrum, are believed to have a Galactic origin. One or more factories of PeV CRs, or PeVatrons, must thus be active within our Galaxy. The direct detection of PeV protons from their sources is not possible since they are deflected in the Galactic magnetic fields. Hundred TeV $\gamma$-rays from decaying $\pi^0$, produced when PeV CRs collide with the ambient gas, can provide the decisive evidence of proton acceleration up to the knee. Here we report the discovery by the High Altitude Water Cherenkov (HAWC) observatory of the $\gamma$-ray source, HAWC~J1825-134, whose energy spectrum extends well beyond 200 TeV without a break or cutoff. The source is found to be coincident with a giant molecular cloud. The ambient gas density is as high as 700 protons/cm$^3$. While the nature of this extreme accelerator remains unclear, CRs accelerated to energies of several PeV colliding with the ambient gas likely produce the observed radiation., Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJL

Cosmological models and the value of their parameters are at the center of the debate because of the tension between the results obtained by the SNe Ia data and the Plank ones of the Cosmic Microwave Background Radiation. Thus, adding cosmological probes observed at high redshifts, such as Gamma-Ray Bursts (GRBs), is needed. Using GRB correlations between luminosities and a cosmological independent variable is challenging because GRB luminosities vary widely. We corrected a tight correlation between the rest-frame end time of the X-ray plateau, its corresponding X-ray luminosity, and the peak prompt luminosity: the so-called fundamental plane relation, using the jet opening angle. Its intrinsic scatter is 0:017 m 0:010 dex, 95% smaller than the isotropic fundamental plane relation, the smallest compared to any current GRB correlation in the literature. This shows that GRBs can be used as reliable cosmological tools. We use this GRB corrected correlation for the so-called platinum sample (a well-defined set with relatively flat plateaus), together with SNe Ia data, to constrain different cosmological parameters like the matter content of the universe today, M, the Hubble constant H0, and the dark energy parameter w for a wCDM model. We confirm the wCDM model but using GRBs up to z = 5, a redshift range much larger than one of SNe Ia.

The detection of high-energy astrophysical neutrinos and ultra-high-energy cosmic rays (UHECRs) provides a new way to explore sources of cosmic rays. One of the highest energy neutrino events detected by IceCube, tagged as IC35, is close to the UHECR anisotropy region detected by Pierre Auger Observatory. The nearby starburst galaxy (SBG), NGC 4945, is close to this anisotropic region and inside the mean angular error of the IC35 event. Considering the hypernovae contribution located in the SB region of NGC 4945, which can accelerate protons up to $\sim 10^{17} \, {\rm eV}$ and inject them into the interstellar medium, we investigate the origin of this event around this starburst galaxy. We show that the interaction of these protons with the SB region's gas density could explain Fermi-LAT gamma-ray and radio observations if the magnetic field's strength in the SB region is the order of $\sim \rm mG$. Our estimated PeV neutrino events, in ten years, for this source is approximately 0.01 ($4\times10^{-4}$) if a proton spectral index of 2.4 (2.7) is considered, which would demonstrate that IC35 is not produced in the central region of this SBG. The transition from prompt to the afterglow emission is one of the most exciting and least understood phases in gamma-ray bursts (GRBs). Correlations among optical, X-ray and gamma-ray emission in GRBs have been explored, to attempt to answer whether the earliest optical emission comes from internal and/or external shocks. We present optical photometric observations of GRB 180325A collected with the TAROT and RATIR ground-based telescopes. These observations show two strong optical flashes with separate peaks at $\sim50\;$s and $\sim120\;$s, followed by a temporally extended optical emission. We also present X-rays and gamma-ray observations of GRB 180325A, detected by the Burst Alert Telescope (BAT) and X-ray Telescope (XRT), on the Neil Gehrels Swift observatory, which both observed a narrow flash at $\sim80\;$s. We show that the prompt gamma- and X-ray early emission shares similar temporal and spectral features consistent with internal dissipation within the relativistic outflow (e.g. by internal shocks or magnetic reconnection), while the early optical flashes are likely generated by the reverse shock that decelerates the ejecta as it sweeps up the external medium., Accepted for publication in ApJ

Gamma-Ray Bursts (GRBs) are the most explosive phenomena in the Universe after the Big Bang. A large fraction of GRB lightcurves (LCs) shows X-ray plateaus. We perform the most comprehensive analysis of all GRBs (with known and unknown redshifts) with plateau emission observed by The Neil Gehrels Swift Observatory from its launch until August 2019. We fit 455 LCs showing a plateau and explore whether these LCs follow closure relations, relations between the temporal and spectral indices of the afterglow, corresponding to 2 distinct astrophysical environments and cooling regimes within the external forward shock (ES) model, and find that the ES model works for the majority of cases. The most favored environments are a constant density interstellar or wind medium with slow cooling. We also confirm the existence of the fundamental plane relation between the rest-frame time and luminosity at the end of the plateau emission and the peak prompt luminosity for this enlarged sample, and test this relation on groups corresponding to the astrophysical environments of our known redshift sample. The plane becomes a crucial discriminant corresponding to these environments in terms of the best fitting parameters and dispersions. Most GRBs for which the closure relations are fulfilled with respect to astrophysical environments have an intrinsic scatter sigma compatible within 1 sigma of that of the Gold GRBs, a subset of long GRBs with relatively flat plateaus. We present the afterglow light curves produced by the deceleration of the non-relativistic ejecta mass in a stratified circumstellar medium with a density profile $n(r)\propto r^{-k}$ with $k=0$, $1$, $1.5$, $2$ and $2.5$. Once the ejecta mass is launched with equivalent kinetic energy parametrized by $E(>\beta)\propto \beta^{-\alpha}$ (where beta is the ejecta velocity) and propagates into the surrounding circumstellar medium, it first moves with constant velocity (the free-coasting phase), and later it decelerates (the Sedov-Taylor expansion). We present the predicted synchrotron and synchrotron-self Compton light curves during the free-coasting phase, and the subsequent Sedov-Taylor expansion. In particular cases, we show the corresponding light curves generated by the deceleration of several ejecta masses with different velocities launched during the coalescence of binary compact objects and the core-collapse of dying massive stars which will contribute at distinct timescales, frequencies, and intensities. Finally, using the multi-wavelength observations and upper limits collected by a large campaign of orbiting satellites and ground telescopes, we constrain the parameter space of both the KN afterglow in GW170817 and the possibly generated KN afterglow in S190814bv. We present the detection of VHE gamma-ray emission above 100 TeV from HAWC J2227+610 with the HAWC observatory. Combining our observations with previously published results by VERITAS, we interpret the gamma-ray emission from HAWC J2227+610 as emission from protons with a lower limit in their cutoff energy of 800 TeV. The most likely source of the protons is the associated supernova remnant G106.3+2.7, making it a good candidate for a Galactic PeVatron. However, a purely leptonic origin of the observed emission cannot be excluded at this time., Accepted for publication by ApJL

The detection of a long flaring activity from blazar TXS 0506+056 in temporal and spatial coincidence with the energetic neutrino IceCube-170922A provided evidence about the photo-hadronic interactions in this source. However, analysis of the archival neutrino and multi-wavelength data from the direction of this blazar between September 2014 and March 2015 revealed a "neutrino flare" without observing quasi-simultaneous activity in the gamma-ray bands, posing challenges to established models. Electron-positron ($e^\pm$) pairs generated from the accretion disks have been amply proposed as a mechanism of bulk acceleration of sub-relativistic and relativistic jets. These pairs annihilate inside the source producing a line around the electron mass which is expected to be blueshifted in the observed frame (on Earth) and redshifted in the frame of the dissipation region of the jet. The redshifted photons in the dissipation region interact with accelerated protons, producing high-energy neutrinos that contribute significantly to the diffuse neutrino flux in the $\sim$ 10 - 20 TeV energy range in connection with gamma-rays from photo-pion process which can be detected by future MeV orbiting satellites. The Fermi-LAT collaboration presented the second gamma-ray burst (GRB) catalog covering its first 10 years of operations. A significant fraction of afterglow-phase light curves in this catalog cannot be explained by the closure relations of the standard synchrotron forward-shock model, suggesting that there could be an important contribution from another process. In view of the above, we derive the synchrotron self-Compton (SSC) light curves from the reverse shock in the thick- and thin-shell regime for a uniform-density medium. We show that this emission could explain the GeV flares exhibited in some LAT light curves. Additionally, we demonstrate that the passage of the forward shock synchrotron cooling break through the LAT band from jets expanding in a uniform-density environment may be responsible for the late time ($\approx10^2$ s) steepening of LAT GRB afterglow light curves. As a particular case, we model the LAT light curve of GRB 160509A that exhibited a GeV flare together with a break in the long-lasting emission, and also two very high energy photons with energies of 51.9 and 41.5 GeV observed 76.5 and 242 s after the onset of the burst, respectively. Constraining the microphysical parameters and the circumburst density from the afterglow observations, we show that the GeV flare is consistent with a SSC reverse-shock model, the break in the long-lasting emission with the passage of the synchrotron cooling break through the Fermi-LAT band and the very energetic photons with SSC emission from the forward shock when the outflow carries a significant magnetic field ($R_{\rm B} \simeq 30$) and it decelerates in a uniform-density medium with a very low density ($n=4.554^{+1.128}_{-1.121}\times 10^{-4}\,{\rm cm^{-3}}$)., Comment: 19 pages, 5 figures. Primordial Black Holes (PBHs) may have been created by density fluctuations in the early Universe and could be as massive as $> 10^9$ solar masses or as small as the Planck mass. It has been postulated that a black hole has a temperature inversely-proportional to its mass and will thermally emit all species of fundamental particles via Hawking Radiation. PBHs with initial masses of $\sim 5 \times 10^{14}$ g (approximately one gigaton) should be expiring today with bursts of high-energy gamma radiation in the GeV--TeV energy range. The High Altitude Water Cherenkov (HAWC) Observatory is sensitive to gamma rays with energies of $\sim$300 GeV to past 100 TeV, which corresponds to the high end of the PBH burst spectrum. With its large instantaneous field-of-view of $\sim 2$ sr and a duty cycle over 95%, the HAWC Observatory is well suited to perform an all-sky search for PBH bursts. We conducted a search using 959 days of HAWC data and exclude the local PBH burst rate density above $3400~\mathrm{pc^{-3}~yr^{-1}}$ at 99% confidence, the strongest limit on the local PBH burst rate density from any existing electromagnetic measurement., Corresponding authors: K.L. A large fraction of Gamma-Ray Bursts (GRBs) lightcurves (LCs) shows X-ray plateaus. We analyze all GRBs with known redshifts presenting plateaus observed by \emph{The Neil Gehrels Swift Observatory} from its launch until August 2019. The fundamental plane relation between the rest-frame time and X-ray luminosity at the end of the plateau emission and the peak prompt luminosity holds for all the GRB classes when selection biases and cosmological evolutions are applied. We have discovered two important findings: 1) a new class of Long GRBs with good data coverage: the Platinum Sample; 2) the Platinum, the SNe-LGRB and the KN-SGRB samples, the second sample composed of GRBs associated spectroscopically with the SNe Ib,c, the third sample composed by 8 GRBs associated with Kilonovae or where there could have been such an association, yield the smallest intrinsic scatter, $\sigma_{platinum,GRB-SNe}=0.22 \pm 0.10$ and $\sigma_{KN-SGRB}=0.24 \pm 0.12$. The highest correlation coefficients yield for the SN-LGRB-ABC sample, which are GRBs spectroscopically associated with SNe Ib/c or with a clear optical bump in the LC resembling the SNe Ib/c, ($R^{2}_{SN-LGRB-ABC}=0.95$), for the SN-LGRBs ($R^{2}_{SN-LGRB}=0.91$) and the KN-SGRBs ($R^{2}_{KN-SGRB}=0.90$) when the redshift evolution is considered. These category planes are reliable candidates to be used as cosmological tools. Furthermore, the distance from the Gold fundamental plane is a crucial discriminant among classes. We present co-observations of three strong count-rate enhancements associated with thunderstorms observed over 17 April 2015 to 23 September 2015 by the High Altitude Water Cherenkov (HAWC) array, and a suite of small scintillation detectors comprising the Gamma-ray Observations During Overhead Thunderstorms (GODOT) instrument. Because the HAWC array is most sensitive to ionizing radiation at high energies ($g100\text{ }\text{ }\mathrm{MeV}$), and the small scintillation detectors are most sensitive to ionizing radiation at low energies ($3--20\text{ }\text{ }\mathrm{MeV}$), we investigate using the ratio of these detector counting rates variations to infer spectral characteristics of these enhancements, and understand the physics behind these thunderstorm accelerator mechanisms. We consider two extreme mechanisms that can produce these enhancements: a point source of relativistic runaway electron avalanches (RREA), and modification of the background cosmic-ray spectrum (MOS) from an electric field profile that is everywhere below the RREA threshold. We simulate the responses of HAWC and the GODOT $12.7\text{ }\text{ }\mathrm{cm}\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}\ensuremath{\oslash}12.7\text{ }\text{ }\mathrm{cm}$ NaI(Tl) scintillator and show that their ratio can discern between the two models, and that the observed thunderstorm rate enhancements are incompatible with the spectra from a point source of RREA, but consistent with our model of MOS for thunderstorm potentials within the range of $\ensuremath{-}250$ to 250 MV.

With the most recent multi-messenger detection, a new branch in modern astronomy has arisen. The GW170817 event together with the short gamma-ray burst GRB 170817A was the first-ever detection of the gravitational waves and an electromagnetic counterpart. These detections encourage us to think that in the following years we will detect a single event through three different channels: including the mentioned above plus neutrinos from multiple astrophysical sources, like those detected from SN1987A. It is believed that short GRBs are originated in the merger of a black-hole (BH) with a neutron star (NS) or NS-NS scenario. Particularly only in the latter case, several simulations suggest that the magnetic field can be amplified up to $10^{16}$ G. Considering this effect over created thermal neutrinos during the initial stage, we could differentiate short GRB progenitors through the neutrino expected flavor ratio and the opacity created by the baryon-loaded winds ejected in each scenario. Moreover, We find that it is more feasible to detect neutrinos from BH-NS than NS-NS systems. Finally, we also estimate the number of neutrino events expected on ground-based detectors, finding that it is possible to detect neutrinos from an energetic enough source located within a nearby vicinity with Hyper-Kamiokande detector., 14 pages, 6 figures

With an instantaneous field of view of ~2 sr and a duty cycle > 95%, the High Altitude Water Cherenkov (HAWC) Gamma-Ray Observatory is a perfect instrument for monitoring variable TeV sources. Because radio galaxies are a type of Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN) with their jets misaligned with respect to our line of sight, they may help us to probe the physics of very-high-energy (VHE) emission processes in these objects. Three out of four radio galaxies that have been detected at TeV energies by other facilities are located within the field of view of the HAWC Observatory: M87, NGC 1275, and 3C 264. A search for TeV gamma rays at their locations yields no statistically significant excess of counts. We present corresponding upper limits for each radio galaxy and light curves covering 3 years of data taken with HAWC.

The detection of the gravitational wave GW170817 defined a breakthrough in multi-messenger astronomy. For the first time, a gravitational wave transient detected by the Laser Interferometer Gravitational-Wave Observatory (LIGO) and Virgo interferomter was associated with a faint electromagnetic gamma-ray counterpart reported by the Gamma-ray Burst Monitor (GBM) aboard on the Fermi satellite. GRB 170817A was followed up by an enormous observational campaign covering a large fraction of the electromagnetic spectrum. In this work, we use the data from High Altitude Water Cherenkov (HAWC) gamma-ray observatory to search for very-high-energy (VHE) TeV photons in coincidence with the X-ray emission from GRB 170817A. Since no counts were observed up to $\sim$120 days after the trigger time, we derive and report the corresponding upper limits in the energy range from 1 to 100 TeV. In addition, we extend the analysis to GRBs with similar features proposed by A. von Kienlin.

The HAWC gamma ray observatory is located at the Sierra Negra Volcano in Puebla, Mexico, at an altitude of 4,100 meters. HAWC is a wide field of view array of 300 water Cherenkov detectors that are continuously surveying 2sr of the sky since March 2015. The large collected data sample consisting in more than 3 years makes HAWC an ideal instrument to perform an unbiased monitoring of blazars in the very-high-energy (VHE) emission. This is particular relevant for Mrk 421, one of the closest and brightest blazars in the gamma-ray/X-ray classified as high- synchrotron-peaked BL Lac class. In this work we present light curves for Mrk 421 and the Crab nebula obtained with the first 17 months of data and a new analysis framework. We compare the results with the light curves reported in [1]. The main advantage of the new framework is the capability to derive fluxes for arbitrary timescales. We show that both, previous and present, methods give consistent results.

The spectral energy distribution (SED) of blazars is generally understood through the standard one-zone synchrotron self-Compton (SSC) model, where a strong correlation between X-ray and TeV gamma-ray fluxes is expected. Recently, for Mrk 421 the correlation was confirmed and interpreted within the SSC model arguing that a description of the correlation up to large flux values considerably restricts the value of the magnetic field under the assumption of an electron spectral index independent of the flux state. In this work, we extend the analysis done on Mrk 421 for other two high-energy peaked BL Lacs: Mrk 501 and 1ES 1959+650.

Detections of very-high-energy (VHE; > 100 GeV) photons from Gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) can provide fundamental information on the involved radiative processes, physical composition of the ejecta and acceleration processes. The High Altitude Water Cherenkov (HAWC) gamma-ray observatory is the best gamma-ray instrument to study transient phenomena over a long period of time from 100 GeV to 100 TeV. Its large field of view and duty cycle (> 95\%) allow it to search blindly for sources of GRBs and to follow up on external alerts from satellite instruments, such as Fermi and Swift, searching for their VHE counterpart. We present results from the on-going GRB monitoring program and VHE upper limits of the latest interesting low-redshift and/or powerful bursts in HAWC's field of view: GRB 170206A, GRB 170817A, GRB 180720B and GRB 190114C.

GRB 190114C, a long and luminous burst, was detected by several satellites and ground-based telescopes from radio wavelengths to GeV gamma-rays. In the GeV gamma-rays, the Fermi LAT detected 48 photons above 1 GeV during the first hundred seconds after the trigger time, and the MAGIC telescopes observed for more than one thousand seconds very-high-energy (VHE) emission above 300 GeV. Previous analysis of the multi-wavelength observations showed that although these are consistent with the synchrotron forward-shock model that evolves from a stratified stellar-wind to homogeneous ISM-like medium, photons above few GeVs can hardly be interpreted in the synchrotron framework. In the context of the synchrotron forward-shock model, we derive the light curves and spectra of the synchrotron self-Compton (SSC) model in the stratified and homogeneous medium. In particular, we study the evolution of these light curves during the stratified-to-homogeneous afterglow transition. Using the best-fit parameters reported for GRB 190114C we interpret the photons beyond the synchrotron limit in the SSC framework and model its spectral energy distribution. We conclude that low-redshift GRBs described under a favourable set of parameters as found in the early afterglow of GRB 190114C could be detected at hundreds of GeVs, and also afterglow transitions would allow that VHE emission could be observed for longer periods., 14 pages, 4 figures. Very-high-energy (VHE) emission is usually interpreted in the synchrotron-self Compton (SSC) scenario, and expected from the low-redshift and high-luminosity gamma-ray bursts (GRBs), as GRB 180720B and GRB 190114C. Recently, VHE emission was detected by the H.E.S.S. telescopes from one of the closest burst GRB 190829A which was associated with the supernova (SN) 2019oyw. In this paper, we present a temporal and spectral analysis from optical bands to Fermi-LAT energy range over multiple observational periods beginning just after the BAT trigger time and extending for almost three months. We show that the X-ray and optical observations are consistent with synchrotron forward-shock emission evolving between the characteristic and cooling spectral breaks during the early and late afterglow in a uniform-density medium. Modeling the light curves together with its spectral energy distribution, it is shown that the outflow expands with an initial bulk Lorentz factor of $\Gamma\sim 30$, which is high for a low-luminosity GRBs and low for a high-luminosity GRBs. The values of the initial bulk Lorentz factor and the isotropic equivalent energy suggest that GRB 190829A is classified as an intermediate-luminosity burst and consequently, it becomes the first burst of this class in being detected in the VHE gamma-ray band by an imaging atmospheric Cherenkov telescope, and, in turn, the first event without being simultaneously observed by the Fermi-LAT instrument. Analyzing the intermediate-luminosity bursts with $z\lesssim 0.2$ such as GRB 130702A, we show that bursts with intermediate luminosity are potential candidates to be detected in very-high energies., Comment: 26 pages, 7 figures, Submitted to ApJ

Short gamma-ray bursts (sGRBs) have widely been accepted to arise from a compact object binary merger; neutron star–neutron star or neutron star–black hole. During the merger of a binary neutron star system, magnetic field can be amplified beyond magnetar field strength ( ∼ 10 15 – 10 16 G ) by Kelvin–Helmholtz instabilities. Considering this effect on the GRB “fireball” dynamics, we study the emission, propagation and oscillation of multi MeV–GeV neutrinos through their self-energies and using these we compute the neutrino effective potential up to order M W − 4 . Additionally, we calculate the number of neutrino events and neutrino flavor ratios that we would expect on Hyper-Kamiokande and DeepCore experiments. We found that MeV neutrinos in a strong magnetic field could provide information of the topology of the field, and that the number of GeV neutrinos expected in DeepCore detector would be directly affected by the strength of the field. It is worth noting that our estimates correspond to the only trustworthy method for verifying the effect of the magnetic field amplification.

We report the ground-level detection of a Galactic Cosmic-Ray (GCR) flux enhancement lasting $\sim$ 17 hr and associated with the passage of a magnetic flux rope (MFR) over the Earth. The MFR was associated with a slow Coronal Mass Ejection (CME) caused by the eruption of a filament on 2016 October 9. Due to the quiet conditions during the eruption and the lack of interactions during the interplanetary CME transport to the Earth, the associated MFR preserved its configuration and reached the Earth with a strong magnetic field, low density, and a very low turbulence level compared to the local background, thus generating the ideal conditions to redirect and guide GCRs (in the $\sim$ 8 to 60 GV rigidity range) along the magnetic field of the MFR. An important negative $B_Z$ component inside the MFR caused large disturbances in the geomagnetic field and a relatively strong geomagnetic storm. However, these disturbances are not the main factors behind the GCR enhancement. Instead, we found that the major factor was the alignment between the MFR axis and the asymptotic direction of the observer.

The detection of gravitational waves together with their electromagnetic counterpart, in the gamma-ray burst GRB 170817A, marked a new era of multi-messenger astronomy. Several theoretical models have been proposed to explain the atypical behavior of this event. Recently, it was shown that the multi-wavelength afterglow of GRB 170817A was consistent with a synchrotron forward-shock model when the outflow was viewed off-axis, decelerated in a uniform medium and parametrized through a power-law velocity distribution. Motivated by the upper limits on the very-high-energy emission, and the stratified medium in the close vicinity of a binary neutron star merger proposed to explain the gamma-ray flux in the short GRB 150101B, we extend the mechanism proposed to explain GRB 170817A to a more general scenario deriving the synchrotron self-Compton (SSC) and synchrotron forward-shock model when the off-axis outflow is decelerated in a uniform and stratified circumburst density. As particular cases, we show that the delayed and long-lasting afterglow emission observed in GRB 080503, GRB140903A, GRB 150101B, and GRB 160821B could be interpreted by a similar scenario to the one used to describe GRB 170817A. In addition, we show that the proposed scenario agrees with the MAGIC, Fermi-LAT and H.E.S.S upper limits on gamma-ray emission from GRB 160821B and GRB 170817A., Comment: 24 pages, 15 figures. We present optical photometry of the afterglow of the long GRB 180205A with the COATLI telescope from 217 seconds to about 5 days after the {\itshape Swift}/BAT trigger. We analyse this photometry in the conjunction with the X-ray light curve from {\itshape Swift}/XRT. The late-time light curves and spectra are consistent with the standard forward-shock scenario. However, the early-time optical and X-ray light curves show non-typical behavior; the optical light curve exhibits a flat plateau while the X-ray light curve shows a flare. We explore several scenarios and conclude that the most likely explanation for the early behavior is late activity of the central engine.

The production of both gravitational waves and short gamma-ray bursts (sGRBs) is widely associated with the merger of compact objects. Several studies have modelled the evolution of the electromagnetic emission using the synchrotron emission produced by the deceleration of both a relativistic top-hat jet seen off-axis, and a wide-angle quasi-spherical outflow (both using numerical studies). In this study we present an analytical model of the synchrotron and synchrotron self-Compton (SSC) emission for an off-axis top-hat jet and a quasi-spherical outflow. We calculate the light curves obtained from an analytic model in which the synchrotron and SSC emission (in the fast- or slow-cooling regime) of an off-axis top-hat jet and a quasi-spherical outflow are decelerated in either a homogeneous or a wind-like circumburst medium. We show that the synchrotron emission of the quasi-spherical outflow is stronger than that of the off-axis jet during the first $\sim$ 10 - 20 days, and weaker during the next $\gtrsim$ 80 days. Moreover, we show that if the off-axis jet is decelerated in a wind-like medium, then the SSC emission is very likely to be detected. Applying a MCMC code to our model (for synchrotron emission only), we find the best-fit values for the radio, optical and X-ray emission of GRB 170817A which are in accordance with observations. For GRB 170817A, we find using our model that the synchrotron emission generated by the quasi-spherical outflow and off-axis top-hat jet increase as $F_\nu\propto t^{\alpha}$ with $\alpha\lesssim 0.8$ and $\alpha>3$, respectively. Finally, we obtain the correspondent SSC light curves which are in accordance with the very-high-energy gamma-ray upper limits derived with the GeV - TeV observatories., Comment: 19 pages and 6 figures. We present observations of the possible short GRB 180418A in $\gamma$-rays, X-rays, and in the optical. Early optical photometry with the TAROT and RATIR instruments show a bright peak ($\approx$ 14.2 AB mag) between $T+28$ and $T+90$ seconds that we interpret as the signature of a reversal shock. Later observations can be modeled by a standard forward shock model and show no evidence of jet break, allowing us to constrain the jet collimation to $\theta_j> 7^\circ$. Using deep late-time optical observations we place an upper limit of $r>24$ AB mag on any underlying host galaxy. The early optical emission of gamma-ray bursts gives an opportunity to understand the central engine and first stages of these events. About 30\% of GRBs present flares whose origin is still a subject of discussion. We present optical photometry of GRB 180620A with the COATLI telescope and RATIR instrument. COATLI started to observe from the end of prompt emission at $T+39.3$~s and RATIR from $T+121.4$~s. We supplement the optical data with the X-ray light curve from \emph{Swift}/XRT. %The optical and X-ray light curves show very unusual behavior with features clearly beyond the standard fireball model. We observe an optical flare from $T+110$ to $T+550$~s, with a temporal index decay $\alpha_\mathrm{O,decay}=1.32\pm 0.01$, and a $\Delta t/t=1.63$, which we interpret as the signature of a reverse shock component. After the initial normal decay the light curves show a long plateau from $T+500$ to $T+7800$~s both in X-rays and the optical before decaying again after an achromatic jet break at $T+7800$~s. Fluctuations are seen during the plateau phase in the optical. Adding to the complexity of GRB afterglows, the plateau phase (typically associated with the coasting phase of the jet) is seen in this object after the ``normal'' decay phase (emitted during the deceleration phase of the jet) and the jet break phase occurs directly after the plateau. We suggest that this sequence of events can be explained by a rapid deceleration of the jet with $t_d\lesssim 40$ s due to the high density of the environment ($\approx 100$ cm$^{-3}$) followed by reactivation of the central engine which causes the flare and powers the plateau phase., Comment: 13 pages, 2 figures, 2 tables, submitted to ApJ

GRB 110709B presented a peculiar three-peak lightcurve; this burst twice triggered the BAT detector onboard Swift. The two triggers were separated by $\sim 10$ minutes. In order to explain such an event, we unify into a single description the millisecond (ms) protomagnetar and the collapsar central-engine models. We find that such a scenario could produce GRBs with three peaks. One for the ms-protomagnetar stage, a second one for the BH-formation event and a third one for the collapsar phase. We show that the three peaks for GRB 110709B originate from different phases of the same collapsing object. We estimate the energies and timescales of the different episodes of this burst using our model and compare with previous results as well as with a reanalysis we perform on the data. We show that not only the light curve, but also the photon index evolution and the delay between the prompt emission and the afterglow of the second central-engine activity phase point towards a model like the one proposed here. We find that, with reasonable assumptions, our model correctly describes the activity in GRB 110709B. We further suggest careful study of future GRBs lightcurves which may help show the validity of our model. Long TeV $\gamma$-ray campaigns have been carried out to study the spectrum, variability and duty cycle of the BL Lac object Markarian 421. These campaigns have given some evidence of the presence of protons in the jet: i) Its spectral energy distribution which shows two main peaks; one at low energies ($\sim$ 1 keV) and the other at high energies (hundreds of GeV), has been described by using synchrotron proton blazar model. ii) The study of the variability at GeV $\gamma$-rays and X-rays has indicated no significant correlation. iii) TeV $\gamma$-ray detections without activity in X-rays, called "orphan flares" have been observed in this object.\\ Recently, The Telescope Array Collaboration reported the arrival of 72 ultra-high-energy cosmic rays with some of them possibly related to the direction of Markarian 421. The IceCube Collaboration reported the detection of 37 extraterrestrial neutrinos in the TeV - PeV energy range collected during three consecutive years. In particular, no neutrino track events were associated with this source. In this paper, we consider the proton-photon interactions to correlate the TeV $\gamma$-ray fluxes reported by long campaigns with the neutrino and ultra-high-energy cosmic ray observations around this blazar. Considering the results reported by The IceCube and Telescope Array Collaborations, we found that only from $\sim$ 25\% to 70\% of TeV fluxes described with a power law function with exponential cutoff can come from the proton-photon interactions., Comment: Accepted for publication in Astroparticle Physics (12 pages, 4 figures)

High-energy neutrinos generated in collimated jets inside the progenitors of gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) have been related with the events detected by IceCube. These neutrinos, produced by hadronic interactions of Fermi-accelerated protons with thermal photons and hadrons in internal shocks, are the only signature when jet has not broken out or failed. Taking into account that the photon field is thermalized at keV energies and the standard assumption that the magnetic field maintains a steady value throughout the shock region (with a width of $10^{10} - 10^{11}$ cm in the observed frame), we study the effect of thermal and magnetized plasma generated in internal shocks on the neutrino oscillations. We calculate the neutrino effective potential generated by this plasma, the effects of the envelope of the star, and the vacuum on the path to Earth. By considering these three effects, the two (solar, atmospheric and accelerator parameters) and three neutrino mixing, we show that although GeV - TeV neutrinos can oscillate resonantly from one flavor to another, a nonsignificant deviation of the standard flavor ratio (1:1:1) could be expected on Earth., Accepted in MNRAS (17 Pages, 12 figures)

Centaurus B (Cen B) is one of the closest and brightest radio-loud galaxy in the southern sky. This radio galaxy, proposed as a plausible candidate for accelerating ultra-high-energy cosmic rays (UHECRs), is near the highest-energy neutrino event reported (IC35) in the High-Energy Starting Events catalog. Pierre Auger observatory reported the highest energy comic rays during 10 years of collecting data with some of them around this source. In this paper, the analysis of the gamma-ray spectrum and the light curve above 200 MeV is presented with nine years of cumulative Fermi-LAT data around Cen B. Taking into consideration the multi-wavelength observations carried out about this radio galaxy, leptonic and hadronic scenarios are introduced in order to fit the spectral energy distribution, assuming that the gamma-ray flux is produced in a region close to the core and in the extended lobes. Using the best-fit values found, several physics properties of this radio galaxy are derived. Furthermore, a statistical analysis of the cosmic ray distribution around Cen B is performed, finding that this distribution is not different from the background at a level of significance of 5%. Considering the UHECR event associated to this source by Moskalenko et al. and extrapolating its luminosity to low energies, we do not find enough evidence to associate the highest-energy neutrino event (IC35) with this radio galaxy., Comment: 29 pages, 12 figures. Correlations between optical flashes and gamma-ray emissions in gamma-ray bursts have been searched in order to clarify the question whether these emissions occur at internal and/or external shocks. Among the most powerful gamma-ray bursts ever recorded are GRB 080319B and GRB 130427A which at early phase presented bright optical flashes possible correlated with $\gamma$-ray components. Additionally, both bursts were fortuitously located within the field of view of the TeV $\gamma$-ray Milagro and HAWC observatories, and although no statistically significant excess of counts were collected, upper limits were placed on the GeV - TeV emission. Considering the synchrotron self-Compton emission from internal shocks and requiring the GeV-TeV upper limits we found that the optical flashes and the $\gamma$-ray components are produced by different electron populations. Analyzing the optical flashes together the multiwavelength afterglow observation, we found that these flashes can be interpreted in the framework of the synchrotron reverse-shock model when outflows have arbitrary magnetizations., Comment: 9 pages, 5 figures and 4 tables. The physical mechanism at the origin of gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) is far from being completely understood. Describing their emission up to very high energies (GeV-TeV) is one of the most challenging and important tasks needed to unveil the physics of these peculiar events. Using data collected by the HAWC gamma-ray observatory, we search for TeV emission coming from a sample of GRBs detected by Fermi and Swift between December 2014 and May 2017. We derive upper limit over different time intervals and use them to constrain the micro-physical pa- rameters and the bulk Lorentz factor under the assumption of Self-Synchrotron Compton within the external shock model scenario. We present the results of this analysis discussing possible interpretations.

The HAWC gamma ray observatory is located at the Sierra Negra Volcano in Puebla, Mexico at an altitude of 4,100 meters. HAWC is a wide field of view array of 300 water Cherenkov detectors that are continuously surveying ~ 2sr of the sky, operating since March 2015. The large collected data sample allows HAWC to perform an unbiased monitoring of the BL Lac Mrk 421. This is the closest and brightest known extragalactic high-synchrotron-peaked BL Lac in the gamma-ray/X- ray bands and are extensively monitored by the Large Area Telescope (LAT) on-board the Fermi satellite, and the BAT and XRT instruments of the Swift satellite. In this work, we use 25 months of HAWC data together with Swift-XRT data for Mrk 421 to characterize potential correlations between both wavelengths. This analysis shows that HAWC and Swift-XRT data are correlated even stronger than expected for quasi simultaneous observations.

The results of 8-year R-band photopolarimetric data of blazar Mrk 421 collected from February 2008 to May 2016 are presented, along with extensive multiwavelength observations covering from radio to TeV $\gamma$-rays around the flares observed in May 2008, March 2010, and April 2013. The most important results are found in 2013 when the source displayed in the R-band a very high brightness state of $11.29\pm 0.03$ mag ($93.60\pm 1.53$ mJy) on April 10th and a polarization degree of ($11.00\pm0.44$) on May 13th. The analysis of the optical data shows that the polarization variability is due to the superposition of two polarized components that might be produced in two distinct emitting regions. An intranight photopolarimetric variability study carried out over 7 nights after the 2013 April maximum found flux and polarization variations on the nights of April 14, 15, 16 and 19. In addition, the flux shows a minimum variability timescale of $\Delta\,t=$2.34$\pm$0.12 hours, and that the polarization degree presented variations of $\sim$ (1 - 2) in a timescale of $\Delta\,t\sim$ minutes. Also, a detailed analysis of the intranight data shows a coherence length of the large-scale magnetic field of $l_B\simeq$ 0.3 pc which is the same order of magnitude to the distance traveled by the relativistic shocks. This result suggests that there is a connection between the intranight polarimetric variations and spatial changes of the magnetic field. Analysis of the complete R-band data along with the historical optical light curve found for this object shows that Mrk 421 varies with a period of 16.26 $\pm$ 1.78 years., Comment: 30 pages and 16 figures. The origin of recently discovered PeV neutrinos is an unsolved problem. In this work we consider a hadronic scenario to produce PeV neutrinos from a region around giant lobes of Centaurus A. Although ultrahigh-energy cosmic rays (UHECRs) are accelerated and confined by giant lobes, they can escape to be later injected in the inter-group medium where galaxies near the giant lobes provides the condition to confine them. UHECRs interact with low-energy photons and protons producing high-energy photons and neutrinos. A high-energy component in the radio galaxy Centaurus A was reported after analyzing four years of Fermi data. The spectrum of this component is described by means of a broken power law with a break energy of 4 GeV and, below and above spectral indices of $\alpha_1$=2.74$\pm$0.03 and $\alpha_2$=2.09$\pm$0.20, respectively. Also a faint $\gamma$-ray flux at TeV energies was detected by H.E.S.S.. In this paper we show that the spectrum at GeV-TeV energies is described through synchrotron self-Compton emission up to a few GeV ($\sim$ 4 GeV) and $\pi^0$ decay products up to TeV energies, although the emission of synchrotron radiation by muons could contribute to the spectrum at GeV energies, if they are rapidly accelerated. Muons and $\pi^0$s are generated in the interactions of accelerated protons with two populations of seed photons which were reported by Compton Gamma-Ray Observatory: one population at intermediate state emission with energy peak of 0.15 MeV and another at low state emission with energy peak of 0.59 MeV. In addition, we show that the reported observations of ultra-high-energy cosmic rays and non high-energy neutrino detection around Centaurus A can be explained through these interactions, assuming that proton spectrum is extended up to ultra-high-energies., Comment: MNRAS, accepted

An exhaustive analysis of 9-year optical R-band photopolarimetric data of the flat-spectrum radio quasar 3C279 from 2008 February 27 to 2017 May 25 is presented, alongside with multiwavelength observing campaigns performed during the flaring activity exhibited in 2009 February/March, 2011 June, 2014 March/April, 2015 June and 2017 February. In the R-band, this source showed the maximum brightness state of $13.68\pm 0.11$ mag ($1.36\pm0.20$ mJy) on 2017 March 02, and the lowest brightness state ever recorded of $18.20\pm 0.87$ mag ($0.16\pm0.03$ mJy) on 2010 June 17. During the entire period of observations, the polarization degree varied between $0.48\pm0.17$% and $31.65\pm0.77$% and the electric vector position angle exhibited large rotations between $82.98^\circ \pm0.92$ and $446.32^\circ \pm1.95$. Optical polarization data show that this source has a stable polarized component that varied from $\sim$6% (before the 2009 flare) to $\sim$13% after the flare. The overall behavior of our polarized variability data supports the scenario of jet precessions as responsible of the observed large rotations of the electric vector position angle. Discrete correlation function analysis show that the lags between gamma-rays and X-rays compared to the optical R-band fluxes are $\Delta t \sim$ 31 d and $1$ d in 2009. Lags were also found among gamma-rays compared with X-rays and radio of $\Delta t \sim$ 30 d and $43$ d in 2011, and among radio and optical-R band of $\Delta t \sim$ 10 d in 2014. A very intense flare in 2017 was observed in optical bands with a dramatic variation in the polarization degree (from $\sim$ 6% to 20%) in 90 days without exhibiting flaring activity in other wavelengths., Comment: 21 pages, 10 figures. Early and late multiwavelength observations play an important role in determining the nature of the progenitor, circumburst medium, physical processes and emitting regions associated to the spectral and temporal features of bursts. GRB 180720B is a long and powerful burst detected by a large number of observatories in multiwavelenths that range from radio bands to sub-TeV gamma-rays. The simultaneous multiwavelength observations were presented over multiple periods of time beginning just after the trigger time and extending for more than 30 days. The temporal and spectral analysis of Fermi LAT observations suggests that it presents similar characteristics to other bursts detected by this instrument. Coupled with X-ray and optical observations, the standard external-shock model in a homogeneous medium is favored by this analysis. The X-ray flare is consistent with the synchrotron self-Compton (SSC) model from the reverse-shock region evolving in a thin shell and long-lived LAT, X-ray and optical data with the standard synchrotron forward-shock model. The best-fit parameters derived with the Markov chain Monte Carlo simulations indicate that the outflow is endowed with magnetic fields and that the radio observations are in the self-absorption regime. The SSC forward-shock model with our parameters can explain the LAT photons beyond the synchrotron limit as well as the emission recently reported by the HESS Collaboration., 18 pages, 9 figures.
