3. Implications of growth factor alterations in the treatment of pancreatic cancer

Abstract

Abstract Pancreatic cancer ranks fifth as a cause of cancer-related death in the world with an overall 5-year survival rate of less than 1% and a median survival of less than a year after tumour detection. Most of these patients have already metastases at the time of diagnosis. The oncologic strategies such as chemotherapy, radiotherapy, antihormonal modalities or the systemic use of specific monoclonal antibodies have not achieved a significant improvement in the survival of pancreatic cancer patients. Recent studies suggest that alterations in molecular pathways, particularly in growth factor mediated mechanisms, that regulate cell proliferation and differentiation play a pivotal role in the pathogenesis of this cancer. The molecular knowledge regarding changes in the expression of growth factors in pancreatic cancer has the potential to improve diagnostic and therapeutic treatment strategies in the near future.

Abstract

Was Evidenz für sich beansprucht, bleibt unhinterfragt, ist beweiskräftig, steht klar vor Augen, leuchtet unmittelbar ein. Evidenz spricht für sich selbst oder bürgt für anderes. Sprachliche wie bildliche Ordnungen stützen sich auf interne Evidenzen, die selbst nicht zur Disposition stehen und nicht in den Fokus der Aufmerksamkeit rücken. Gleichzeitig verweisen diese Ordnungen auf Evidenzen und Beweise, die außerhalb und unabhängig von ihnen gegeben zu sein scheinen. Aber in welchem Verhältnis stehen das Offenkundige und das Selbstverständliche, das Grundlegende und das Augenfällige, Autonomie und Verweis zueinander? Wie wird Evidenz hergestellt oder zugesprochen? Sind die Verfahren der Produktion und Legitimation ebenso offensichtlich oder basal wie ihr Resultat? Die List hingegen scheint in vielerlei Hinsicht das Gegenteil der Evidenz zu sein: Sie wirkt im Verborgenen und auf Umwegen, reagiert spontan und situativ auf das Bestehende, Beständige und Allgemeingültige. Dennoch bedarf es immer ihrer Mitwirkung und Vermittlung, wenn Evidenzen hergestellt und stabilisiert werden, denn diese sind nicht so festgefügt und zeitlos, wie es den Anschein hat. Ihre Selbstverständlichkeit wird auch von innen bedroht: Die Liste der Evidenzen birgt Widersprüche. Evidenzen können sich nur behaupten, wenn sie sich mit der List verbünden. Mit der Frage nach den komplexen Wechselwirkungen zwischen Listen und Evidenzen wird aber nicht auf eine simple Zurückweisung jeglicher Evidenz als trügerisches Konstrukt abgezielt. Jeder Versuch, über die Evidenz hinaus zu gelangen oder zu einem Zustand diesseits der Evidenzen vorzudringen, entzieht sich selbst den Boden. Die größte List der Evidenz besteht darin, unentbehrlich zu sein.

10. Non-neoplastic lesions of female virgin Han:NMRI mice, incidence and influence of food restriction throughout life span. I: Thyroid

Abstract

A life span study with 900 female virgin Han:NMRI mice (300 outbred controls, 300 of a fat subline and 300 of a lean subline) was carried out to determine the occurrence of spontaneous disease with ad libitumor restricted feeding. The major age-dependent non-neoplastic alteration of the thyroid was a cystic distension of the ultimobranchial bodies (up to 90% in the oldest age groups). Most of the severely cystic thyroids were found in animals of the fat sublines and development seemed to be slightly delayed by food restriction. The cyst walls were composed of ciliated and non-ciliated granular or highly attenuated cells. The cysts contained Alcian blue and periodic acid Schiff positive substances.
