We use satellite and airborne altimetry to estimate annual mass changes of the Greenland Ice Sheet. We estimate ice loss corresponding to a sea-level rise of 6.9 ± 0.4 mm from April 2011 to April 2020, with a highest annual ice loss rate of 1.4 mm/yr sea-level equivalent from April 2019 to April 2020. On a regional scale, our annual mass loss timeseries reveals 10-15 m/yr dynamic thickening at the terminus of Jakobshavn Isbræ from April 2016 to April 2018, followed by a return to dynamic thinning. We observe contrasting patterns of mass loss acceleration in different basins across the ice sheet and suggest that these spatiotemporal trends could be useful for calibrating and validating prognostic ice sheet models. In addition to resolving the spatial and temporal fingerprint of Greenland's recent ice loss, these mass loss grids are key for partitioning contemporary elastic vertical land motion from longer-term glacial isostatic adjustment (GIA) trends at GPS stations around the ice sheet. Our ice-loss product results in a significantly different GIA interpretation from a previous ice-loss product.

Greenland's outlet glaciers have been a leading source of mass loss and accompanying sea-level rise from the Greenland Ice Sheet (GrIS) over the last 25 years. The dynamic component of outlet glacier mass loss depends on both the ice flux through the terminus and the inland extent of glacier thinning, initiated at the ice-ocean interface. Here, we find limits to the inland spread of thinning that initiates at glacier termini for 141 ocean-terminating outlet glaciers around the GrIS. Inland diffusion of thinning is limited by steep reaches of bed topography that we call "knickpoints." We show that knickpoints exist beneath the majority of outlet glaciers but they are less steep in regions of gentle bed topography, giving glaciers in gentle bed topography the potential to contribute to ongoing and future mass loss from the GrIS by allowing the diffusion of thinning far into the ice sheet interior.

The retreat and acceleration of Greenland glaciers since the mid-1990s have been attributed to the enhanced intrusion of warm Atlantic Waters (AW) into fjords, but this assertion has not been quantitatively tested on a Greenland-wide basis or included in models. Here, we investigate how AW influenced retreat at 226 marine-terminating glaciers using ocean modeling, remote sensing, and in situ observations. We identify 74 glaciers in deep fjords with AW controlling 49% of the mass loss that retreated when warming increased undercutting by 48%. Conversely, 27 glaciers calving on shallow ridges and 24 in cold, shallow waters retreated little, contributing 15% of the loss, while 10 glaciers retreated substantially following the collapse of several ice shelves. The retreat mechanisms remain undiagnosed at 87 glaciers without ocean and bathymetry data, which controlled 19% of the loss. Ice sheet projections that exclude ocean-induced undercutting may underestimate mass loss by at least a factor of 2.

We reconstruct the mass balance of the Greenland Ice Sheet using a comprehensive survey of thickness, surface elevation, velocity, and surface mass balance (SMB) of 260 glaciers from 1972 to 2018. We calculate mass discharge, D, into the ocean directly for 107 glaciers (85% of D) and indirectly for 110 glaciers (15%) using velocity-scaled reference fluxes. The decadal mass balance switched from a mass gain of +47 ± 21 Gt/y in 1972-1980 to a loss of 51 ± 17 Gt/y in 1980-1990. The mass loss increased from 41 ± 17 Gt/y in 1990-2000, to 187 ± 17 Gt/y in 2000-2010, to 286 ± 20 Gt/y in 2010-2018, or sixfold since the 1980s, or 80 ± 6 Gt/y per decade, on average. The acceleration in mass loss switched from positive in 2000-2010 to negative in 2010-2018 due to a series of cold summers, which illustrates the difficulty of extrapolating short records into longer-term trends. Cumulated since 1972, the largest contributions to global sea level rise are from northwest (4.4 ± 0.2 mm), southeast (3.0 ± 0.3 mm), and central west (2.0 ± 0.2 mm) Greenland, with a total 13.7 ± 1.1 mm for the ice sheet. The mass loss is controlled at 66 ± 8% by glacier dynamics (9.1 mm) and 34 ± 8% by SMB (4.6 mm). Even in years of high SMB, enhanced glacier discharge has remained sufficiently high above equilibrium to maintain an annual mass loss every year since 1998.

Meltwater runoff from the Greenland ice sheet surface influences surface mass balance (SMB), ice dynamics, and global sea level rise, but is estimated with climate models and thus difficult to validate. We present a way to measure ice surface runoff directly, from hourly in situ supraglacial river discharge measurements and simultaneous high-resolution satellite/drone remote sensing of upstream fluvial catchment area. A first 72-h trial for a 63.1-km2 moulin-terminating internally drained catchment (IDC) on Greenland's midelevation (1,207-1,381 m above sea level) ablation zone is compared with melt and runoff simulations from HIRHAM5, MAR3.6, RACMO2.3, MERRA-2, and SEB climate/SMB models. Current models cannot reproduce peak discharges or timing of runoff entering moulins but are improved using synthetic unit hydrograph (SUH) theory. Retroactive SUH applications to two older field studies reproduce their findings, signifying that remotely sensed IDC area, shape, and supraglacial river length are useful for predicting delays in peak runoff delivery to moulins. Applying SUH to HIRHAM5, MAR3.6, and RACMO2.3 gridded melt products for 799 surrounding IDCs suggests their terminal moulins receive lower peak discharges, less diurnal variability, and asynchronous runoff timing relative to climate/SMB model output alone. Conversely, large IDCs produce high moulin discharges, even at high elevations where melt rates are low. During this particular field experiment, models overestimated runoff by +21 to +58%, linked to overestimated surface ablation and possible meltwater retention in bare, porous, low-density ice. Direct measurements of ice surface runoff will improve climate/SMB models, and incorporating remotely sensed IDCs will aid coupling of SMB with ice dynamics and subglacial systems.

The Greenland Ice Sheet is losing mass through increased melting and solid ice discharge. Supraglacial meltwater features (e.g., lakes, rivers and slush) are becoming more abundant as a result of the former and are implicated as a control on the latter when they drain. It is not yet clear, however, how this system will respond to future climate changes, and it is likely that melting will continue to increase as the Arctic continues to warm. Here, we use Sentinel-2 and Landsat 8 satellite imagery to compare meltwater features in the Russell/Leverett glacier catchment in a high (2019) and a comparatively low (2018) melt year. We find that in the higher melt year: 1) surface meltwater features form and drain, at ~200 and ~400 m higher elevations, respectively, 2) that small lakes (< 0.0495 km2) – typically disregarded in previous studies – are more prevalent and 3) that slush is more widespread. This is important because we show that all three of these sets of features are associated with transient increases in velocity when they drain, and because refreezing of slush can create ice slabs, which inhibit the storage of meltwater in the porous firn and promote surface ponding and runoff in future years. Interestingly, we also identify the potential occurrence of a cascading lake drainage event in the higher melt year, which also appears to perturb ice velocity. Our study therefore suggests that previously poorly mapped and under-studied features (such as small lakes and slush) are actually important in terms of their impact on ice flow and supraglacial runoff, and thus on global sea level rise, in future, warmer, years. Modelling firn densification is conducive to enhancing the accuracy of monitoring glacier mass changes from satellite altimetry and extracting climate records from ice cores. As snowmelt is increasing in a warming climate on the Greenland Ice Sheet (GrIS), quantifying the role of liquid water within the firn layer becomes critical for simulating firn properties. Nevertheless, previously published firn densification models do not accurarely capture the extensive density fluctuations caused by liquid water refreezing in observations. In this study, an improved firn densification model is developed by integrating the Bucket scheme and Darcy's law to assess the capillary retention, refreezing, and runoff of liquid water within the firn layer. Moreover, the improved model is employed for two study sites, KAN_U and Dye-2, over the GrIS to evaluate its performance. At the KAN_U site, characterized by high snowfall and snowmelt rates, the model captures high-density peaks (~917 kg · m-3) caused by the refreezing of liquid water, which corresponds to the formation of ice lenses or ice layers. At Dye-2 with comparatively limited liquid water, the model also captures the features of high-density layers resulting from refreezing. In general, the modelled firn depth-density profiles at the two study sites agree well with the in situ measurements obtained from 12 firn cores drilled between 2012 and 2019. For the regions with limited liquid water, low-density peaks are probably overestimated due to excess refreezing or limited knowledge of ice lenses or ice layers. Future work is expected to enhance the understanding and further improve numerical simulation of the mechanisms involved in firn densification, and subsequently integrate data-driven and physical mechanisms into firn densification modelling. In Greenland, 87% of the glacierized area terminates in the ocean, but mass lost at the ice‐ocean interface, or frontal ablation, has not yet been fully quantified. Using measurements and models we calculate frontal ablation of Greenland's 213 outlet and 537 peripheral glaciers and find a total frontal ablation of 481.8 ± 24.0 for 2000–2010 and 510.2 ± 18.6 Gt a−1 for 2010–2020. Ice discharge accounted for ∼90% of frontal ablation during both periods, while mass loss due to terminus retreat comprised the remainder. Only 16 glaciers were responsible for the majority (>50%) of frontal ablation from 2010 to 2020. These estimates, along with the climatic‐basal balance, allow for a more complete accounting of Greenland Ice Sheet and peripheral glacier mass balance. In total, Greenland accounted for ∼90% of Northern Hemisphere frontal ablation for 2000–2010 and 2010–2020. Plain Language Summary: We estimate the mass of ice lost from all Greenland glaciers that entered the ocean during each of the last two decades. This ice loss at the front of these marine‐terminating glaciers is called frontal ablation and is approximately equal to the mass of icebergs entering the ocean. Frontal ablation is important because 87% of glacier area in Greenland ends in the ocean, through 750 outlets, and previous work has only approximated frontal ablation. This study quantifies it for the first time, helping to close the mass budget for the Greenland Ice Sheet and better partition its mass balance into components. We find that Greenland accounts for ∼90% of all Northern Hemisphere frontal ablation and, of that contribution, just 17 glaciers for 2000–2010 and 16 glaciers for 2010–2020 account for more than half of total Greenland frontal ablation. Knowledge of frontal ablation from marine-terminating glaciers (i.e., mass lost at the calving face) is critical for constraining glacier mass balance, improving projections of mass change, and identifying the processes that govern frontal mass loss. Here, we discuss the challenges involved in computing frontal ablation and the unique issues pertaining to both glaciers and ice sheets. Frontal ablation estimates require numerous datasets, including glacier terminus area change, thickness, surface velocity, density, and climatic mass balance. Observations and models of these variables have improved over the past decade, but significant gaps and regional discrepancies remain, and better quantification of temporal variability in frontal ablation is needed. Despite major advances in satellite-derived large-scale datasets, large uncertainties remain with respect to ice thickness, depth-averaged velocities, and the bulk density of glacier ice close to calving termini or grounding lines. We suggest ways in which we can move toward globally complete frontal ablation estimates, highlighting areas where we need improved datasets and increased collaboration. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Greenland experienced multiple extreme weather/climate events in recent decades that led to significant melting of the ice sheet. However, how the intensity of extreme climate events over Greenland varied under recent warming has not been fully examined. Here, we collect 176 in situ observations over Greenland and demonstrate that the observed extreme temperature/precipitation events over Greenland are well captured by the RACMO2.3p2 model, in terms of climatological distribution, interannual variability, and long-term trend. Thus, we then investigate the spatiotemporal features of extreme events over Greenland during 1958–2019, using the daily model outputs at 5.5-km resolution. The simulated annual maximum temperature exhibits a significant increasing trend (∼0.13°C decade−1) during 1958–2019, whereas there is a weakening trend (−0.24°C decade−1) in annual minimum temperature over Greenland, especially after the 1990s (−1.24°C decade−1). For the interannual variability, changes in temperature extremes between warm and cold temperature years share large similarities with the distributions of long-term trends. The extreme precipitation events measured by annual maximum daily precipitation amount show a profound increasing trend (0.52 mm day−1 decade−1) over northeastern Greenland during 1958–2019, with large interannual variability in the ice-free coastal region and southern Greenland. Additionally, the changes in extreme warm and cold events are generally linked with the variation of Greenland blocking in summer and Arctic polar vortex in winter, respectively, in terms of favorable circulation background, and the extreme precipitation events are often associated with the position of the polar jet stream.
