Abstract

Goessling et al. (1) link the record-breaking warming anomaly of 2023 to a global albedo decline due to reduced low-level cloud cover. What caused the reduction remains unclear. Goessling et al. considered several geophysical mechanisms, including ocean surface warming and declining aerosol emissions, but did not discuss the biosphere. Abstract

Generative AI (GenAI) tools are radically expanding the scope and capability of automation in knowledge work such as academic research. AI-assisted research tools show promise for augmenting human cognition and streamlining research processes, but could potentially increase automation bias and stifle critical thinking. We surveyed the past three years of publications from leading HCI venues. We closely examined 11 AI-assisted research tools, five employing traditional AI approaches and six integrating GenAI, to explore how these systems envision novel capabilities and design spaces. We consolidate four design recommendations that inform cognitive engagement when working with an AI research tool: Providing user agency and control; enabling divergent and convergent thinking; supporting adaptability and flexibility; and ensuring transparency and accuracy. We discuss how these ideas mark a shift in AI-assisted research tools from mimicking a researcher's established workflows to generative co-creation with the researcher and the opportunities this shift affords the research community.

3. Behavior of Ising spins and ecological oscillators on dynamically rewired small world networks

Abstract

Many ecological populations are known to display a cyclic behavior with period 2. Previous work has shown that when a metapopulation (group of coupled populations) with such dynamics is allowed to interact via nearest neighbor dispersal in two dimensions, it undergoes a phase transition from disordered (spatially asynchronous) to ordered (spatially synchronous) that falls under the 2-D Ising universality class. While nearest neighbor dispersal may satisfactorily describe how most individuals migrate between habitats, we should expect a small fraction of individuals to venture on a journey to further locations. We model this behavior by considering ecological oscillators on dynamically rewired small-world networks, in which at each time step a fraction $p$ of the nearest neighbor interactions is replaced by a new interaction with a random node on the network. We measure how this connectivity change affects the critical point for synchronizing ecological oscillators. Our results indicate that increasing the amount of long-range interaction (increasing $p$) favors the ordered regime, but the presence of memory in ecological oscillators leads to quantitative differences in how much long-range dispersal is needed to order the network, relative to an analogous network of Ising spins. We also show that, even for very small values of $p$, the phase transition falls into the mean-field universality class, and argue that ecosystems where dispersal can occasionally happen across the system's length scale will display a phase transition in the mean-field universality class.

Abstract

X-ray images are vital in medical diagnostics, but their effectiveness is limited without clinical context. Radiologists often find chest X-rays insufficient for diagnosing underlying diseases, necessitating comprehensive clinical features and data integration. We present a novel framework to enhance the clinical context through augmentation techniques with clinical tabular data, thereby improving its applicability and reliability in AI medical diagnostics. We introduce a pioneering approach to clinical data augmentation that employs large language models to generate patient contextual synthetic data. This methodology is crucial for training more robust deep learning models in healthcare. It preserves the integrity of real patient data while enriching the dataset with contextually relevant synthetic features, significantly enhancing model performance. Our methodology, termed DALL-M, uses a three-phase feature generation process: (i)clinical context storage, (ii)expert query generation, and (iii)context-aware feature augmentation. DALL-M generates new, clinically relevant features by synthesizing chest X-ray images and reports. Applied to 799 cases using nine features from the MIMIC-IV dataset, it created an augmented set of 91 features. This is the first work to generate contextual values for patients' X-ray reports. Specifically, we provide (i)the capacity of LLMs to generate contextual synthetic values for existing clinical features and (ii)their ability to create entirely new clinically relevant features. Empirical validation with machine learning models showed significant performance improvements. Incorporating augmented features increased the F1 score by 16.5% and Precision and Recall by approximately 25%. DALL-M addresses a critical gap in clinical data augmentation, offering a robust framework for generating contextually enriched datasets., Comment: we introduce a pioneering approach to clinical data augmentation that employs large language models (LLMs) to generate patient contextual synthetic data. Abstract

Introduction The World Health Organization (WHO) defines sexual health as 'a state of physical, emotional, mental and social wellbeing in relation to sexuality; it is not merely the absence of [...], Objective To investigate the associations between sexual health dimensions, and overall health and well-being. Methods In February 2024, we systematically searched Scopus, PsyArticles, PsycINFO[R], PubMed[R], Web of Science and LILACS for articles reporting on associations between sexual health, health and well-being indicators. We applied no language restrictions and followed the 2020 Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses guidelines. To assess the risk of bias in the included studies, we used the Risk Of Bias In Non-randomized Studies--of Exposures tool. Findings Of 23 930 unique titles identified, 63 studies met the inclusion criteria. We grouped the results into two categories: (i) sexual and physical health; and (ii) sexual and psychological health. The results consistently showed strong correlations between sexual health, overall health and well-being. Almost all studies found significant associations between positive sexual health indicators and lower depression and anxiety, higher quality of life, and greater life satisfaction among men and women, including older adults, pregnant women, and same-sex and mixed-sex couples. Conclusion Findings indicate that emphasizing a positive perspective on sexual health and highlighting its benefits should be regarded as an important component of the effort to improve overall health and well-being for everyone. Resultats Sur les 23 930 titres uniques que nous avons identifies, 63 etudes correspondaient aux criteres d'inclusion. Nous avons reparti les resultats en deux categories: (i) sante physique et sexuelle; et (ii) sante psychologique et sexuelle. Les resultats ont systematiquement montre de fortes correlations entre sante sexuelle, sante globale et entre indicateurs de sante sexuelle positifs et moins de depression et d'anxiete, une meilleure qualite de vie et davantage de satisfaction vis-a-vis de l'existence parmi les hommes et les femmes, y compris les personnes agees et les femmes enceintes, tant chez les couples homosexuels qu'heterosexuels. Para evaluar el riesgo de sesgo en los estudios seleccionados, se utilizo la herramienta de evaluation del riesgo de sesgo en estudios no aleatorizados de exposicion. Resultados De los 23 930 titulos unicos identificados, 63 estudios cumplieron los criterios de inclusion. Se agruparon los resultados en dos categorias: (i) salud sexual y fisica; y (ii) salud sexual y psicologica. Los resultados indicaron de manera sistematica fuertes correlaciones entre la salud sexual, la salud y el bienestar generales. En la mayoria de los estudios, se hallaron asociaciones significativas entre los indicadores positivos de salud sexual y una menor depresion y ansiedad, una mayor calidad de vida y una mayor satisfaction vital entre hombres y mujeres, incluidos los adultos mayores, las mujeres embarazadas y las parejas del mismo sexo y mixtas. Conclusion Los resultados indican que enfatizar una perspectiva positiva de la salud sexual y destacar sus beneficios deberia considerarse un componente importante del esfuerzo por mejorar la salud y el bienestar general de todos.

Abstract

Recognized for their non-diffracting properties, Bessel beams can be conveniently combined to generate the so-called Frozen Waves, which are monochromatic beams endowed with topological charge and whose longitudinal intensity pattern can be shaped according to a previously chosen function. Continuous superposition of Bessel beams is specially suitable for micrometer-scale domains, being highly relevant for applications in optical tweezers, particle trapping and atom guidance. Previous studies have successfully constructed micrometer Frozen Wave solutions with null topological charge; nevertheless, some challenges persist in obtaining exact solutions when dealing with higher topological charge values (i.e., higher-order micrometer Frozen Waves). Typically, a topological charge raising operator is used to elevate the order; however, such solutions face significant issues when the orders become excessively high. In this paper, based in continuous superposition of higher order Bessel beams, we develop a novel analytic and exact solution for higher-order micrometer Frozen Waves, so obtaining a method for modeling the intensity of beams with arbitrary topological charge within micrometer spatial domains. Abstract

Abstract Background Self-medication is defined as the use of medicines without a prescription and supervision by a qualified professional. This practice can cause a lot of damage to an individual’s health, such as allergic reactions, dependence, drug resistance, among others. The objective of this study was to evaluate the prevalence of self-medication and its association with covid-19 infection among university students at Federal Higher Education Institutions (IFES) in Minas Gerais, during remote teaching due to the covid-19 pandemic. Methods This was a cross-sectional and multicenter study, with undergraduate students from eight Brazilian IFES. Data collection took place between October 2021 and February 2022. The students responded to a self-administered questionnaire consisting of sociodemographic characteristics, lifestyle habits and health conditions, available on an online platform. The medicines mentioned by the students were separated by classes, according to the ATC (Anatomical Therapeutic Chemical) and cases of self-medication were subsequently identified. Descriptive (frequency) and bivariate (Pearson's chi-square test) analyzes were carried out. A multivariate analysis (logistic regression) was carried out between self-reported infection by the covid-19 virus and the practice of self-medication. Results 8650 students participated in the study, with 26.57% (95%CI: 25.32–27.86) reporting self-medication. Analgesics, antidepressants and anti-inflammatories were the most cited classes. Students suspected of being infected with the covid-19 virus used self-medication more often compared to non-infected students [OR: 1.63 (95% CI: 1.34–1.99)]. Conclusion Self-medication was associated with suspected infection with the covid-19 virus. It is necessary to create actions that make students aware of the problems that this practice can cause. Abstract Background Adolescent pregnancy is associated with adverse outcomes, and although there has been a global decline in the incidence of teenage pregnancies and neonatal deaths, the absolute number remains significant. This study aimed to evaluate temporal trends in live births and neonatal deaths from adolescent mothers, as well as to identify the effect of adolescent pregnancy on neonatal death. Methods This is a population-based study of all live births from mothers residing in Sao Paulo state, Brazil, between 2004 and 2020. The Prais-Winsten model was used to analyze annual trends for live births from adolescent mothers, neonatal mortality rates, and the percentage of neonatal deaths within specific demographic groups. The Kaplan–Meier survival curve evaluated the time to neonatal death. A Poisson regression model was utilized to identify maternal and neonatal characteristics associated with the risk of neonatal death. Results The present study encompassed a total of 9,870,181 live births, with 14.4% occurring to adolescent mothers. There were 75,504 neonatal deaths, with 14,159 (18.8%) of those occurring in the neonates born to adolescent mothers. The annual percentage change in live births to adolescent mothers decreased by -3.03% (95%CI: -4.12% to -1.93%). The neonatal mortality rates showed a declining trend within both adolescent and non-adolescent mothers. Infants born to adolescent mothers had a higher probability of neonatal death and an earlier age of death when compared to non-adolescent mothers’ infants. Poisson multiple regression analysis indicated an elevated risk of neonatal death for seven tested variables (adolescent mothers, inadequate prenatal care, multiple gestation, non-hospital delivery, low birth weight, male sex and congenital anomalies) and a reduction on risk of death for neonates born from cesarean section. Conclusions The study showed a reduction in live births to adolescent mothers and neonatal deaths among adolescent mothers from 2004 to 2020 in the state of Sao Paulo. Was also shown a risk association between been born to adolescent mothers and neonatal death.

Abstract

Abstract Science is integral to society because it can inform individual, government, corporate, and civil society decision-making on issues such as public health, new technologies or climate change. Yet, public distrust and populist sentiment challenge the relationship between science and society. To help researchers analyse the science-society nexus across different geographical and cultural contexts, we undertook a cross-sectional population survey resulting in a dataset of 71,922 participants in 68 countries. The data were collected between November 2022 and August 2023 as part of the global Many Labs study “Trust in Science and Science-Related Populism” (TISP). The questionnaire contained comprehensive measures for individuals’ trust in scientists, science-related populist attitudes, perceptions of the role of science in society, science media use and communication behaviour, attitudes to climate change and support for environmental policies, personality traits, political and religious views and demographic characteristics. Here, we describe the dataset, survey materials and psychometric properties of key variables. We encourage researchers to use this unique dataset for global comparative analyses on public perceptions of science and its role in society and policy-making.

Abstract

Abstract The COVID-19 pandemic caused by SARS-CoV-2 continues to pose a major challenge to global health. Targeting the main protease of the virus (Mpro), which is essential for viral replication and transcription, offers a promising approach for therapeutic intervention. In this study, advanced computational techniques such as molecular docking and molecular dynamics simulations were used to screen a series of antiviral compounds for their potential inhibitory effect on the SARS-CoV-2 Mpro. A comprehensive analysis of compounds from the ChemDiv and PubChem databases was performed. The physicochemical properties, pharmacokinetics, and ADMET (Absorption, Distribution, Metabolism, Excretion, and Toxicity) profiles were evaluated to determine drug similarity and safety. Compound 4896 − 4038 proved to be the most promising candidate. It exhibited a favorable balance between molecular weight (491.06) and lipophilicity (logP 3.957), high intestinal absorption (92.119%), and broad tissue distribution (VDss of 0.529), indicating good oral bioavailability and therapeutic potential. Molecular docking studies showed that 4896 − 4038 has a strong binding affinity to the active site of Mpro and forms key interactions, such as hydrogen bonds, carbon-hydrogen bonds, pi-sulfur, and multiple van der Waals and pi-pi stacked bonds. The binding energy was comparable to that of the reference drug X77, indicating potential efficacy. Molecular dynamics simulations over 300 ns confirmed the stability of the Mpro/4896 − 4038 complex of protein-ligand. Free energy landscape mapping and MM/PBSA calculations further substantiated the favorable binding and stability of the complex. Importantly, 4896 − 4038 exhibited a comparatively favorable safety profile. In summary, compound 4896 − 4038 shows significant potential as a potent SARS-CoV-2 Mpro inhibitor, combining potent inhibitory activity with favorable pharmacokinetic and safety profiles. These results support the further development of 4896 − 4038 as a promising therapeutic agent in the fight against COVID-19 that warrants experimental validation and clinical investigation.

Abstract Background Despite the benefits of physical activity (PA), cancer survivors report engagement barriers, and existing interventions often lack comprehensive solutions. Theory-based interventions using evidence-based behavior change techniques (BCTs) have been shown to be effective in promoting PA for breast cancer survivors, although their feasibility and acceptability lack evidence. The PAC-WOMAN trial is a three-arm randomized controlled trial aimed at promoting short- and long-term PA and improving the quality of life of breast cancer survivors. This study describes the development of a brief counseling theory-based motivational intervention from the PAC-WOMAN trial, assessing its feasibility and acceptability. Methods A broad search of theory-based interventions for people with chronic diseases was conducted. Key strategies from each intervention helped shape the main components and BCTs used in the eight bimonthly sessions of the PAC-WOMAN brief counseling intervention, which was based on self-determination theory principles and aimed at empowering participants to develop self-regulation resources for PA through basic psychological needs satisfaction. A toolkit and manuals for intervention facilitators and participants were developed. A feasibility study was conducted to monitor implementation fidelity, acceptability, adherence, and participants’ experiences (via a focus group). Results Twelve women (mean age 55.9 ± 6.7 years) participated. Implementation monitoring indicated that the intervention was feasible. The attrition rate was 25%. Focus-group discussion suggested that weekly sessions would increase attendance, highlighted the helpfulness of self-monitoring and the importance of role models for PA, and identified the session on safely exercising at home as key in improving PA levels. Conclusions This research aims to enhance systematic reporting in intervention development by detailing the specific BCTs used, translating them into implementation strategies, providing comprehensive resources for facilitators/participants, and supporting the implementation, dissemination, and adoption of a theory-based intervention informed by previous research. Feasibility testing suggests that the intervention was well accepted by participants and feasible, although it could benefit from adjustments in format to increase compliance. 49. Effectiveness of a Mastery Climate Cognitive-Motor Skills School-Based Intervention in Children Living in Poverty: Motor and Academic Performance, Self-Perceptions, and BMI

Abstract

Background: Children living in poverty often are exposed to situations that negatively affect various aspects of their development. So, it is important to propose interventional programs that minimize the negative effects of living in poverty on these children. Objective: To verify the impact of a mastery climate cognitive-motor skills school-based intervention on academic and motor performance, body mass index, and perceptions of competence and self-worth in children living in poverty. Method: 280 children (50% girls), 7- to10-years-old, from Ceará state -- Brazil, participated in this study. Intervention (IG, N = 140) and comparison (N = 140) groups were composed. The Test of Gross Motor Development -- 2, the Self-Perception Profile for Children, the School Performance Test (reading, writing, math), and the Body Mass Index (BMI) were used. Children in the IG participated in a mastery climate intervention and children in the CG in a recreational sports program for 12 weeks (36 sessions /140 min each session/ three times a week) with 60 min of academic activities, 20 min recess and snacks, and 60 min of motor practices. Results: The intervention group showed significant improvement from pre- to post-test, and higher motor, academic (reading, math), perceived competence, social acceptance, and self-worth scores than the comparison group at pos-test (p from 0.031 to <0.001). Conclusion: Mastery climate cognitive-motor intervention positively impacts the motor and academic performance and the self-perceptions of the children living in poverty, reinforcing the need for these interventions to helping children become more proficient and assured about their competences.
