The sequelae of this condition increase the risk of cardiovascular and neurological disease and increased mortality. Its pathophysiology is associated with redox dysregulation, excessive inflammation, and perturbation of cellular homeostasis. Molecular hydrogen (H2) may attenuate oxidative stress, improve cellular function, and reduce chronic inflammation. Pre-clinical and clinical studies have shown promising effects of H2-rich water (HRW) on specific features of metabolic syndrome, yet the effects of long-term, high-concentration HRW in this prevalent condition remain poorly addressed.Methods: We conducted a randomized, double-blinded, placebo-controlled trial in 60 subjects (30 men and 30 women) with metabolic syndrome. An initial observation period of one week was used to acquire baseline clinical data followed by randomization to either placebo or high-concentration HRW (> 5.5 millimoles of H2 per day) for 24 weeks.Results: Supplementation with high-concentration HRW significantly reduced blood cholesterol and glucose levels, attenuated serum hemoglobin A1c, and improved biomarkers of inflammation and redox homeostasis as compared to placebo (P < 0.05). Furthermore, H2 tended to promote a mild reduction in body mass index and waist-to-hip ratio.Conclusion: Our results give further credence that high-concentration HRW might have promising effects as a therapeutic modality for attenuating risk factors of metabolic syndrome.Keywords: metabolism, fasting blood glucose, cholesterol, inflammation, oxidative stress, hydrogen water

Abstract

AKARI, the first Japanese satellite dedicated to infrared astronomy, was launched on 2006 February 21, and started observations in May of the same year. AKARI has a 68.5 cm cooled telescope, together with two focal-plane instruments, which survey the sky in six wavelength bands from the mid- to far-infrared. The instruments also have the capability for imaging and spectroscopy in the wavelength range 2 - 180 micron in the pointed observation mode, occasionally inserted into the continuous survey operation. The in-orbit cryogen lifetime is expected to be one and a half years. The All-Sky Survey will cover more than 90 percent of the whole sky with higher spatial resolution and wider wavelength coverage than that of the previous IRAS all-sky survey. Point source catalogues of the All-Sky Survey will be released to the astronomical community. The pointed observations will be used for deep surveys of selected sky areas and systematic observations of important astronomical targets. Abstract

T'-RE2CuO4 (RE: rare-earth element), after appropriate "reduction", has fairly high conductivity and also exhibits clear Fermi edge in photoemission spectroscopy. To clarify the origin of conductivity in the T' mother compounds, we evaluated the unscreened charge-transfer gap for T'-RE2CuO4 and T-La2CuO4. The value of charge-transfer gap for T'-compounds almost linearly decreases with increasing the ionic radius of RE from 12.24 eV for T'-Tm2CuO4 to 9.90 eV for T'-La2CuO4. The results qualitatively explain metallic conductivity in T'-RE2CuO4 for large RE., Comment: 12 pages, 1 figure, Proceedings of ISS 2005

Abstract

We have performed a systematic investigation of the variations of the lattice constants with substituent rare-earth element concentration x in the nominally undoped superconductors T'-(La3+)2-x(RE3+)xCuO4 (RE = Sm, Eu, Gd, Tb, Lu, and Y), which we have recently discovered using MBE. The results show both the in-plane and out-of-plane lattice constants (a0 and c0) linearly decrease with x, whose extrapolation to x = 2 agrees well with the reported a0 and c0 values for each T'-RE2CuO4. This behavior is what one would expect simply from the ionic size difference between La3+ and RE3+. The absence of the Cu-O bond stretching due to electron-doping, which is commonly observed in electron-doped T' and infinite-layer superconductors, implies that electron doping via oxygen deficiencies is, at least, not a main source of charge carriers., Comment: proceedings of ISS 2004

11. Role of impurity oxygen in superconductivity of 'non-doped' T'-(La,RE)2CuO4

Abstract

We have systematically investigated the effect of oxygen nonstoichiometry in a nominally undoped superconductor T'-(La,Y)2CuO4+y. In the experiments, the reduction condition was changed after the sample growth by MBE. The superconductivity is very sensitive to the reduction condition. With systematically increasingly reduced atmospheres, resistivity shows a continuous drop and no discontinuity is observed even until the appearance of superconductivity. The absence of the highly insulating state expected for Mott insulators around y ~ 0 suggests that T'-(La,Y)2CuO4 has intrinsic carriers. The role of residual apical oxygen, which is detrimental to superconductivity, is also discussed based on the resistivity-temperature characteristics in insufficiently reduced samples., Comment: proceedings of ISS 2004

Abstract

High-temperature superconductivity has been discovered in La2-xBaxCuO4 [1], a compound that derives from the undoped La2CuO4 crystallizing in the perovskite T-structure. In this structure oxygen octahedra surround the copper ions. It is common knowledge that charge carriers induced by doping in such an undoped antiferromagnetic Mott-insulator lead to high-temperature superconductivity [2- 4]. The undoped material La2CuO4 is also the basis of the electron-doped cuprate superconductors [5] of the form La2-xCexCuO4+y [6,7] which however crystallize in the so called T-prime-structure, i.e. without apical oxygen above or below the copper ions of the CuO2-plane. It is well known that for La2-xCexCuO4+y the undoped T-prime-structure parent compound cannot be prepared due to the structural phase transition back into the T-structure occuring around x ~ 0.05. Here, we report that if La is substituted by RE = Y, Lu, Sm, Eu, Gd, or Tb, which have smaller ionic radii but have the same valence as La, nominally undoped La2-xRExCuO4 can be synthesized by molecular beam epitaxy in the T-prime-structure. The second important result is that all these new T-prime-compounds are superconductors with fairly high critical temperatures up to 21 K. For this new class of cuprates La2-xRExCuO4, which forms the T-prime-parent compounds of the La-based electron doped cuprates, we have not been able to obtain the Mott-insulating ground state for small x before the structural phase transition into the T-structure takes place., Comment: 17 pages, 7 figures

15. IRTS observation of the near-infrared extragalactic background light

Abstract

We searched for near-infrared extragalactic background light (EBL) in the data from the Near-InfraRed Spectrometer (NIRS) on the Infrared Telescope in Space (IRTS). After subtracting the contribution of faint stars and the zodiacal component based on modeling, a significant isotropic emission is obtained in the wavelength bands from 1.4 micron to 4.0 micron. The in-band flux amounts to ~ 35 nW m-2 sr-1 which is too bright to be explained by the integrated light from faint galaxies. Significant fluctuations in sky brightness were also detected which can not be explained by fluctuations due to faint stars, zodiacal components and normal galaxies. The excess fluctuation amounts to ~ 1/4 of the excess emission over the integrated light of galaxies. A two-point correlation analysis shows that IRTS/NIRS data has an angular scale of fluctuations of a few degrees. Recent WMAP results of CMB polarization indicate that the reionization of the Universe occurred at z ~ 17 or earlier. The observed near infrared background light could be redshifted UV light from the first generation of massive stars (Pop.III stars) which caused the reionization of the Universe. The spectral jump around 1 micron over the optical EBL suggests that massive star formation terminated at z~9. Abstract

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: The population of the obese is increasing worldwide. Prevention and improvement of obesity are indispensable for decreasing the risk of metabolic disorders. We have recently shown that obesity and fatty liver are reduced by a plant-derived lactic acid bacterium, Pediococcus pentosaceus LP28 (LP28), in high-fat diet-induced obese mice. The aim of the present clinical study is to prove that LP28 is effective for reducing body fat and body weight, as shown in the experiment using mice. SUBJECTS/METHODS: The clinical trial was carried out as a double-blind, randomized, placebo-controlled study comprising 62 subjects (20-70 years of age, BMI 25-30 kg/[m.sup.2]). These subjects were randomly assigned to three groups that received living LP28, heat-killed LP28 or a placebo powder, administered orally once a day for 12 weeks. RESULTS: Heat-killed LP28 reduced BMI (0.45 kg/[m.sup.2], 95% CI (0.04, 0.86), P = 0.035), body fat percentage (1.11%, (0.39, 1.82), P = 0.002), body fat mass (1.17 kg (0.43, 1.92), P = 0.004) and waist circumference (2.84 cm (0.74, 4.93), P = 0.009) when compared with a placebo group. Fasting plasma glucose, HbA1c, fasting insulin, HOMA-IR and serum lipids levels did not change by either living LP28 or heat-killed LP28 intake. CONCLUSIONS: Heat-killed LP28 displays an antiobesity effect that reduces BMI, body fat and waist circumference, suggesting that the plant-derived lactic acid bacterium LP28 would be a promising preventive of metabolic syndrome. However, in general, interprofessional teamwork has certain problems that impede its function. To clarify these problems in relation to diabetes care, a questionnaire survey was conducted. Methods: The participants who were involved in diabetes-related educational seminars, and medical personnel who were engaged in diabetes care from the National Center for Global Health and Medicine, were asked to complete the questionnaire about perceptions of, and satisfaction with, interprofessional teamwork across multiple health care providers, who were actually involved in diabetes care. Results: From 456 people who were asked to take the questionnaire, 275 people answered. The percentages of the respondents according to profession who considered multidisciplinary teamwork sufficient were as follows: physicians, 20.5%; nurses, 12.7%; registered dietitians, 29.6%; pharmacists, 21.9%; physiotherapists, 18.2%; and clinical laboratory technicians 15.4%. Insufficient interprofessional communication and inconsistency in motivation levels among staff were frequently cited as causes of insufficient teamwork. All professions considered interprofessional meetings or conferences necessary and essential for teamwork. Conclusion: The survey revealed that interprofessional teamwork in diabetes care is currently insufficient. Continuous efforts to change each profession's perceptions about interprofessional teamwork and efforts to improve the quality of interprofessional meetings are necessary. A recent experimental study suggested that calcium channel blockers (CCBs) might inhibit ß-cell apoptosis, enhance ß-cell function, and prevent diabetes. The present meta-analysis examined the clinical effect of CCBs on the incidence of diabetes. Methods: MEDLINE, EMBASE, ISI Web of Science, the Cochrane Library, and ClinicalTrials.gov were each searched for relevant articles published up to March 11, 2013. Randomized controlled trials (RCTs) with a follow-up period of at least 1-year were included. Identified articles were systematically reviewed, and those with pertinent data were selected for inclusion in a meta-analysis. Results: We included ten RCTs in a meta-analysis. Of the 108,118 people with hypertension and no pre-existing diabetes, 7,073 (6.5%) cases of type II diabetes were reported. CCBs were associated with a higher incidence of diabetes than angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitors (ACEIs) or angiotensin-receptor blockers (ARBs; pooled risk ratios [95% confidence intervals]: 1.23 [1.01–1.51] and 1.27 [1.14–1.42], respectively) and a lower incidence compared with ß blockers or diuretics (0.83 [0.73–0.94] and 0.82 [0.69–0.98], respectively). The overall risk of diabetes among subjects taking CCBs was not significant (0.99 [0.85–1.15]). Conclusion: The use of CCBs was not significantly associated with incident diabetes compared to other antihypertensive agents: the association with diabetes was lowest for ACEIs and ARBs, followed by CCBs, ß blockers, and diuretics. Although CCBs can be safely used in hypertensive patients, it would be premature to advocate CCBs for the prevention or treatment of diabetes. Four serotypes of dengue virus (DENV-1, DENV-2, DENV-3, and DENV-4) are classified in the Flavivirus genus of the family Flaviviridae. We prepared monoclonal antibodies against DENV capsid protein from mice immunized with DENV-2 and determined the cross-reactivity with each serotype of DENV and Japanese encephalitis virus.Methods and results: To clarify the relationship between the cross-reactivity of monoclonal antibodies and the diversity of these viruses, we examined the situations of flaviviruses by analyses of phylogenetic trees. Among a total of 60 prepared monoclonal antibodies specific for DENV, five monoclonal antibodies stained the nuclei of infected cells and were found to be specific to the capsid protein. Three were specific to DENV-2, while the other two were cross-reactive with DENV-2 and DENV-4. No monoclonal antibodies were cross-reactive with all four serotypes. Phylogenetic analysis of DENV amino acid sequences of the capsid protein revealed that DENV-2 and DENV-4 were clustered in the same branch, while DENV-1 and DENV-3 were clustered in the other branch. However, these classifications of the capsid protein were different from those of the envelope and nonstructural 1 proteins. Phylogenetic distances between the four serotypes of DENV were as different as those of other flaviviruses, such as Japanese encephalitis virus and West Nile virus. Large variations in the DENV serotypes were comparable with the differences between species of flavivirus. Furthermore, the diversity of flavivirus capsid protein was much greater than that of envelope and nonstructural 1 proteins.Conclusion: In this study, we produced specific monoclonal antibodies that can be used to detect DENV-2 capsid protein, but not a cross-reactive one with all serotypes of DENV capsid protein. Abstract

Microbiota are a major component of agroecosystems. Root microbiota, which inhabit the inside and surface of plant roots, play a significant role in plant growth and health. As next-generation sequencing technology allows the capture of microbial profiles without culturing the microbes, profiling of plant microbiota has become a staple tool in plant science and agriculture. Here, we have developed a novel high-throughput method based on a two-step PCR amplification protocol, involving DNA extraction using magnetic beads and PCR purification using exonuclease, for 16S rRNA gene amplicon sequencing of plant root microbiota. This method reduces sample handling and captures microbial diversity comparable to that obtained by the standard method. We found that using a buffer with magnetic beads enabled efficient extraction of microbial DNA directly from plant roots. In addition, we demonstrated that purification using exonuclease before the second PCR step enabled the capture of higher degrees of microbial diversity, thus allowing for the detection of minor bacteria compared with the purification using magnetic beads in this step. Our method offers a simple and high-throughput solution for maintaining the quality of plant root microbial community profiling.
