We present JWST-NIRCam narrow-band, 4.05 $\mu$m Brackett-$\alpha$ images of the Sgr C HII region, located in the Central Molecular Zone (CMZ) of the Galaxy. Unlike any HII region in the Solar vicinity, the Sgr C plasma is dominated by filamentary structure in both Brackett-$\alpha$ and the radio continuum. Some bright filaments, which form a fractured arc with a radius of about 1.85 pc centered on the Sgr C star-forming molecular clump, likely trace ionization fronts. The brightest filaments form a `$\pi$-shaped' structure in the center of the HII region. Fainter filaments radiate away from the surface of the Sgr C molecular cloud. The filaments are emitting optically thin free-free emission, as revealed by spectral index measurements from 1.28 GHz (MeerKAT) to 97 GHz (ALMA). But, the negative in-band 1 to 2 GHz spectral index in the MeerKAT data alone reveals the presence of a non-thermal component across the entire Sgr C HII region. We argue that the plasma flow in Sgr C is controlled by magnetic fields, which confine the plasma to rope-like filaments or sheets. This results in the measured non-thermal component of low-frequency radio emission plasma, as well as a plasma $\beta$ (thermal pressure divided by magnetic pressure) below 1, even in the densest regions. We speculate that all mature HII regions in the CMZ, and galactic nuclei in general, evolve in a magnetically dominated, low plasma $\beta$ regime., Comment: 31 pages, 19 figures. We present James Webb Space Telescope (JWST)-NIRCam observations of the massive star-forming molecular cloud Sagittarius C (Sgr C) in the Central Molecular Zone (CMZ). In conjunction with ancillary mid-IR and far-IR data, we characterize the two most massive protostars in Sgr C via spectral energy distribution (SED) fitting, estimating that they each have current masses of $m_* \sim 20\:M_\odot$ and surrounding envelope masses of $\sim 100\:M_\odot$. We report a census of lower-mass protostars in Sgr C via a search for infrared counterparts to mm continuum dust cores found with ALMA. We identify 88 molecular hydrogen outflow knot candidates originating from outflows from protostars in Sgr C, the first such unambiguous detections in the infrared in the CMZ. About a quarter of these are associated with flows from the two massive protostars in Sgr C; these extend for over 1 pc and are associated with outflows detected in ALMA SiO line data. An additional $\sim 40$ features likely trace shocks in outflows powered by lower-mass protostars throughout the cloud. We report the discovery of a new star-forming region hosting two prominent bow shocks and several other line-emitting features driven by at least two protostars. We infer that one of these is forming a high-mass star given an SED-derived mass of $m_* \sim 9\:M_\odot$ and associated massive ($\sim 90\:M_\odot$) mm core and water maser. Finally, we identify a population of miscellaneous Molecular Hydrogen Objects (MHOs) that do not appear to be associated with protostellar outflows., Comment: Appendix figures B1 and B2 will be made into online-only figure sets for the eventual ApJ publication

With its extreme density of stars and stellar remnants, dense young massive clusters, high specific star formation rate, intense radiation field, high magnetic field strength, and properties of the interstellar medium that resemble those in high redshift galaxies and starbursts, the Galactic Centre is the most extreme environment that we can observe in detail. It is also the only nucleus of a galaxy that we can observe with a resolution of just a few milli parsecs. This makes it a crucial target to understand the physics of galactic nuclei and star formation, as well as the connection between them. It enables studies of a large number of otherwise rare objects, such as extremely massive stars and stellar remnants, at a well-defined distance, thus facilitating the interpretation of their properties. The Galactic Centre has been and is being studied intensively with the most advanced facilities. In this White Paper, we advocate for a large-area, multi-wavelength survey with the Square Kilometre Array of an area of about 1.25x0.3 deg**2 (180x40 pc**2), centered on the massive black hole Sagittarius A* and for repeated deep observations of the nuclear star cluster over a decade, which will allow the community to address multiple science problems with a single data set.

A compact source, G0.02467-0.0727, was detected in ALMA \threemm observations in continuum and very broad line emission. The continuum emission has a spectral index $\alpha\approx3.3$, suggesting that the emission is from dust. The line emission is detected in several transitions of CS, SO, and SO$_2$ and exhibits a line width FWHM $\approx160$ \kms. The line profile appears Gaussian. The emission is weakly spatially resolved, coming from an area on the sky $\lesssim1"$ in diameter ($\lesssim10^4$ AU at the distance of the Galactic Center; GC). The centroid velocity is $v_{LSR}\approx40$-$50$ \kms, which is consistent with a location in the Galactic Center. With multiple SO lines detected, and assuming local thermodynamic equilibrium (LTE) conditions, $T_\mathrm{LTE} = 13$ K, which is colder than seen in typical GC clouds, though we cannot rule out low-density, subthermally excited, warmer gas. Despite the high velocity dispersion, no emission is observed from SiO, suggesting that there are no strong ($\gtrsim10~\mathrm{km~s}^{-1}$) shocks in the molecular gas. There are no detections at other wavelengths, including X-ray, infrared, and radio. We consider several explanations for the Millimeter Ultra-Broad Line Object (MUBLO), including protostellar outflow, explosive outflow, collapsing cloud, evolved star, stellar merger, high-velocity compact cloud, intermediate mass black hole, and background galaxy. A wide-field near-infrared survey of the Galactic disk and bulge/bar(s) is supported by a large representation of the community of Galactic astronomers. The combination of sensitivity, angular resolution and large field of view make Roman uniquely able to study the crowded and highly extincted lines of sight in the Galactic plane. A ~1000 deg2 survey of the bulge and inner Galactic disk would yield an impressive dataset of ~120 billion sources and map the structure of our Galaxy. The effort would foster subsequent expansions in numerous dimensions (spatial, depth, wavelengths, epochs). The Central Molecular Zone (CMZ; the central ~ 500 pc of the Galaxy) is a kinematically unusual environment relative to the Galactic disc, with high velocity dispersions and a steep size-linewidth relation of the molecular clouds. In addition, the CMZ region has a significantly lower star formation rate (SFR) than expected by its large amount of dense gas. An important factor in explaining the low SFR is the turbulent state of the star-forming gas, which seems to be dominated by rotational modes. However, the turbulence driving mechanism remains unclear. In this work, we investigate how the Galactic gravitational potential affects the turbulence in CMZ clouds. We focus on the CMZ cloud G0.253+0.016 (`the Brick'), which is very quiescent and unlikely to be kinematically dominated by stellar feedback. We demonstrate that several kinematic properties of the Brick arise naturally in a cloud-scale hydrodynamics simulation that takes into account the Galactic gravitational potential. These properties include the line-of-sight velocity distribution, the steepened size-linewidth relation, and the predominantly solenoidal nature of the turbulence. Within the simulation, these properties result from the Galactic shear in combination with the cloud's gravitational collapse. This is a strong indication that the Galactic gravitational potential plays a crucial role in shaping the CMZ gas kinematics, and is a major contributor to suppressing the SFR by inducing predominantly solenoidal turbulent modes., Comment: 7 pages, 8 figures; accepted to MNRAS (July 24th 2023)

The nuclear stellar disc (NSD) is a dense stellar structure at the centre of our Galaxy. Given its proximity, it constitutes a unique laboratory to understand other galactic nuclei. Nevertheless, the high crowding and extinction hamper its study, and even its morphology and kinematics are not yet totally clear. In this work we use NSD red clump stars, whose intrinsic properties are well known, to trace the kinematics of the NSD and to compute the distance and extinction towards the edges of the NSD. We used publicly available proper motion and photometric catalogues of the NSD to distinguish red clump stars by using a colour-magnitude diagram. We then applied a Gaussian mixture model to obtain the proper motion distribution, and computed the extinction and distance towards stars with different kinematics. We obtained that the proper motion distributions contain NSD stars rotating eastwards and westwards, plus some contamination from Galactic bulge/bar stars, in agreement with previous work. We computed the distance and extinction towards the eastward- and westward-moving stars and concluded that the latter are $\sim300$ pc beyond, indicating a similar structure along and across the line of sight, and consistent with an axisymmetric structure of the NSD. Moreover, we found that the extinction within the NSD is relatively low and accounts for less than 10 % of the total extinction of the stars belonging to the farthest edge of the NSD., Comment: Accepted for publication in A&A. 7 pages, 6 figures

We combine archival HST and new JWST imaging data, covering the ultraviolet to mid-infrared regime, to morphologically analyze the nuclear star cluster (NSC) of NGC 628, a grand-design spiral galaxy. The cluster is located in a 200 pc x 400 pc cavity, lacking both dust and gas. We find roughly constant values for the effective radius (r_eff ~ 5 pc) and ellipticity ({\epsilon} ~ 0.05), while the S\'ersic index (n) and position angle (PA) drop from n ~ 3 to ~ 2 and PA ~ 130{\deg} to 90{\deg}, respectively. In the mid-infrared, r_eff ~ 12pc, {\epsilon} ~ 0.4, and n ~ 1-1.5, with the same PA ~ 90{\deg}. The NSC has a stellar mass of log10 (M_nsc / M_Sun) = 7.06 +- 0.31, as derived through B-V, confirmed when using multi-wavelength data, and in agreement with the literature value. Fitting the spectral energy distribution, excluding the mid-infrared data, yields a main stellar population's age of (8 +- 3) Gyr with a metallicity of Z = 0.012 +- 0.006. There is no indication of any significant star formation over the last few Gyr. Whether gas and dust were dynamically kept out or evacuated from the central cavity remains unclear. The best-fit suggests an excess of flux in the mid-infrared bands, with further indications that the center of the mid-infrared structure is displaced with respect to the optical center of the NSC. The Galactic centre (GC) is located at only 8 kpc from Earth and constitutes a unique template to understand Galactic nuclei. Nevertheless, the high crowding and extinction towards the GC hamper the study of its main stellar components, the nuclear stellar disc (NSD) and the nuclear star cluster (NSC). Recent work has suggested that the NSD and the NSC can be distinguished along the line of sight towards the NSC via the different extinction of their stars. This motivated us to analyse the proper motion, radial velocity, and the metallicity distributions of the different extinction groups. We use photometric, kinematic, and metallicity data to distinguish between probable NSD and NSC stars in a region centred on the NSC. We detected two different extinction groups of stars and obtained significantly different proper motion distributions for each of them, in agreement with the expected kinematics for the NSD and the NSC. We derived radial velocity maps that appear to be different for the NSD and the NSC. We also found different metallicities for each of the components, with the largest one measured for the most extinguished group of stars. We obtained that the metallicity distribution of each extinction group is best fitted by a bimodal distribution, indicating the presence of two metallicity components for each of them (a broad one slightly below solar metallicity, and a more metal rich narrower one, that is largest for the high extinction group of stars). We conclude that both extinction groups are distinct GC components with different kinematics and metallicity, and correspond to the NSD and the NSC. Therefore, it is possible to distinguish them via their different extinction. The high mean metallicity, $[M/H]\sim0.3$\,dex, obtained for the NSC metal rich stars, supports that the NSC is arguabily the most metal rich region of the Galaxy., Comment: Accepted for publication in A&A. 8 pages, 8 figures

The Milky Way's center is the closest galaxy nucleus and the most extreme environment of the Galaxy. Although its volume is less than 1% of that of the Galactic disk, up to 10% of all new-born stars in the Galaxy in the past 100 Myr formed there. Therefore, it constitutes a perfect laboratory to understand star formation under extreme conditions, similar to those in starburst or high-redshift galaxies. However, the only two known Galactic center young clusters account for <10% of the expected young stellar mass. We analyze the star formation history of Sagittarius (Sgr) B1, a Galactic center region associated with strong HII emission, and find evidence for the presence of several $10^5$ solar masses of young stars, that formed $\sim$10 Myr ago. We also detect the presence of intermediate age stars (2-7 Gyr) in Sgr B1 that appear to be rare (or absent) in the inner regions of the nuclear stellar disk, and might indicate inside out formation. Our results constitute a large step toward a better understanding of star formation at the Galactic center, such as the fate of young clusters, and the possibly different initial mass function in this region., Comment: 22 pages, 14 figures

The Nuclear Stellar Disc (NSD) is a flattened high-density stellar structure that dominates the gravitational field of the Milky Way at Galactocentric radius $30\lesssim R\lesssim 300$ pc. We construct axisymmetric self-consistent equilibrium dynamical models of the NSD in which the distribution function is an analytic function of the action variables. We fit the models to the normalised kinematic distributions (line-of-sight velocities + VIRAC2 proper motions) of stars in the NSD survey of Fritz et al., taking the foreground contamination due to the Galactic Bar explicitly into account using an $N$-body model. The posterior marginalised probability distributions give a total mass of $M_{\rm NSD} = 10.5^{+1.1}_{-1.0} \times10^8 \,{\rm M_\odot}$, roughly exponential radial and vertical scale-lengths of $R_{\rm disc} = 88.6^{+9.2}_{-6.9}$ pc and $H_{\rm disc}=28.4^{+5.5}_{-5.5}$ pc respectively, and a velocity dispersion $\sigma \simeq 70$ km/s that decreases with radius. We find that the assumption that the NSD is axisymmetric provides a good representation of the data. We quantify contamination from the Galactic Bar in the sample, which is substantial in most observed fields. Our models provide the full 6D (position+velocity) distribution function of the NSD, which can be used to generate predictions for future surveys. The Milky Way's nuclear stellar disc (NSD) and nuclear star cluster (NSC) are the main features of the Galactic centre. Nevertheless, their observation is hampered by the extreme source crowding and high extinction. Hence, their relation and formation scenario are not fully clear yet. We aim at detecting the stellar populations from the NSC and the NSD along the line-of-sight towards the NSC, and assess whether they have different stellar populations and star formation histories. We analysed the colour-magnitude diagram, $K_s$ vs. $H-K_s$, of a region of $8.2'\times2.8'$ centred on the NSC, and detected two different stellar groups with different extinctions. We studied their red clumps to find the features associated to each of the stellar populations. We obtained that the two groups of stars correspond to the NSD and the NSC, and found that they have significantly different stellar populations and star formation histories. We detected a double red clump for the NSD population, in agreement with previous work, whereas the NSC presents a more complex structure well fitted by three Gaussian features. We created extinction maps to analyse the extinction variation between the detected stellar groups. We found that the high-extinction layer varies on smaller scales (arc-seconds), and that there is a difference of $A_{K_s}\sim0.6$\,mag between both extinction layers. Finally, we obtained that the distance towards each of the stellar populations is compatible with the Galactic centre distance, and found some evidence of a slightly closer distance for the NSD stars ($\sim360\pm200$\,pc)., Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJ. 13 pages, 10 figures

The extreme extinction ($A_V\sim30$\,mag) and its variation on arc-second scales towards the Galactic centre hamper the study of its stars. Their analysis is restricted to the near infrared (NIR) regime, where the extinction curve can be approximated by a broken power law. Therefore, correcting for extinction is fundamental to analyse the structure and stellar population of the central regions of our Galaxy. We aim to, (1) discuss different strategies to de-redden the photometry and check the usefulness of extinction; (2) build extinction maps for the NIR bands $JHK_s$ and make them publicly available; (3) create a de-reddened catalogue of the GALACTICNUCLEUS (GNS) survey, identifying foreground stars; and (4) perform a preliminary analysis of the de-reddened $K_s$ luminosity functions (KLFs). We used photometry from the GNS survey to create extinction maps for the whole catalogue. We took red clump (RC) and red giant stars of similar brightnesses as a reference to build the maps and de-reddened the GNS photometry. We discussed the limitations of the process and analysed non-linear effects of the de-reddening. We obtained high resolution ($\sim3''$) extinction maps with low uncertainties ($\lesssim5$\,\%) and computed average extinctions for each of the regions covered by the GNS. We checked that our maps effectively correct the differential extinction reducing the spread of the RC features by a factor of $\sim2$. We assessed the validity of the broken power law approach computing two equivalent extinction maps $A_H$ using either $JH$ and $HK_s$ photometry for the same reference stars and obtained compatible average extinctions within the uncertainties. Finally, we analysed de-reddened KLFs for different lines of sight and found that the regions belonging to the NSD contain a homogeneous stellar population that is significantly different from that in the innermost bulge regions., Comment: Updated to the final version accepted for publication in Astronomy & Astrophysics. 17 pages, 11 figures

The position of the Sun inside the Milky Way's disc hampers the study of the spiral arm structure. We aim to analyse the spiral arms along the line-of-sight towards the Galactic centre (GC) to determine their distance, extinction, and stellar population. We use the GALACTICNUCLEUS survey, a JHKs high angular resolution photometric catalogue (0.2") for the innermost regions of the Galaxy. We fitted simple synthetic colour-magnitude models to our data via $\chi^2$ minimisation. We computed the distance and extinction to the detected spiral arms. We also analysed the extinction curve and the relative extinction between the detected features. Finally, we built extinction-corrected Ks luminosity functions (KLFs) to study the stellar populations present in the second and third spiral arm features. We determined the mean distances to the spiral arms: $d1=1.6\pm0.2$, $d2=2.6\pm0.2$, $d3=3.9\pm0.3$, and $d4=4.5\pm0.2$ kpc, and the mean extinctions: $A_{H1}=0.35\pm0.08$, $A_{H2}=0.77\pm0.08$, $A_{H3}=1.68\pm0.08$, and $A_{H4}=2.30\pm0.08$ mag. We analysed the extinction curve in the near infrared for the stars in the spiral arms and found mean values of $A_J/A_{H}=1.89\pm0.11$ and $A_H/A_{K_s}=1.86\pm0.11$, in agreement with the results obtained for the GC. This implies that the shape of the extinction curve does not depend on distance or absolute extinction. We also built extinction maps for each spiral arm and obtained that they are homogeneous and might correspond to independent extinction layers. Finally, analysing the KLFs from the second and the third spiral arms, we found that they have similar stellar populations. We obtained two main episodes of star formation: $>6$ Gyr ($\sim60-70\%$ of the stellar mass), and $1.5-4$ Gyr ($\sim20-30\%$ of the stellar mass), compatible with previous work. The determination of absolute and relative distances of molecular clouds along the line-of-sight towards the central molecular zone (CMZ) is crucial to infer its orbital structure, dynamics, and to understand star formation in the clouds. Recent results by Zoccali et al. 2021 suggest that the G0.253 + 0.016 cloud (the Brick) does not belong to the CMZ. This motivated us to cross check their results computing the absolute and relative distance to the Brick and also to other two molecular clouds (the 50 km/s, and the 20 km/s clouds), and discuss their CMZ membership. We used the colour magnitude diagrams $K_s$ vs. $H-K_s$ to compare stars detected towards the target clouds with stars detected towards three reference regions in the nuclear stellar disc (NSD) and the Galactic bulge. We used red clump (RC) stars to estimate the distance to each region. We obtained that all the clouds present a double RC feature. Such a double RC has been reported in previous work for the NSD, but not for the bulge adjacent to it. We exclude the possibility that the different RC features are located at significantly different distances. In the central few degrees of the bulge of the Milky Way there is a flattened structure of gas, dust and stars (the central molecular zone) similar to nuclear disks in other galaxies. Due to extreme foreground extinction we possess only sparse information about the (mostly old) stellar population of the nuclear disc. Here we present our KMOS spectroscopic survey of the stars in the nuclear disk reaching the old populations. In order to obtain an unbiased data set, we sample stars in the full extinction range along each line-of-sight. We also observe reference fields in neighboring regions of the Galactic bulge. Here we describe the design and execution of the survey and present first results. We obtain spectra and five spectral indices of 3113 stars with a median S/N of 67 and measure radial velocities for 3051 stars. Of those, 2735 sources have sufficient S/N to estimate temperatures and metallicities from indices. We derive metallicities using the CO 2-0 and Na I K-band spectral features, where we derive our own empirical calibration using metallicities obtained with higher resolution observations. We use 183 giant stars for calibration spanning in metallicity from -2.5 to 0.6 dex and covering temperatures of up to 5500 K. The derived index based metallicities deviate from the calibration values with a scatter of 0.32 dex. The internal uncertainty of our metallicities is likely smaller. We use these metallicity measurements together with the CO index to derive effective temperatures using literature relations. We publish the catalog here. Our data set complements Galactic surveys such as Gaia and APOGEE for the inner 200 pc radius of the Milky Way which is not readily accessible by those surveys due to extinction. The nuclear stellar disc (NSD) is a flattened stellar structure that dominates the gravitational potential of the Milky Way at Galactocentric radii $30 \lesssim R \lesssim 300{\, \rm pc}$. In this paper, we construct axisymmetric Jeans dynamical models of the NSD based on previous photometric studies and we fit them to line-of-sight kinematic data of APOGEE and SiO maser stars. We find that (i) the NSD mass is lower but consistent with the mass independently determined from photometry by Launhardt et al. (2002). Our fiducial model has a mass contained within spherical radius $r=100{\, \rm pc}$ of $M(r<100{\, \rm pc}) = 3.9 \pm 1 \times 10^8 {\, \rm M_\odot}$ and a total mass of $M_{\rm NSD} = 6.9 \pm 2 \times 10^8 {\, \rm M_\odot}$. (ii) The NSD might be the first example of a vertically biased disc, i.e. with ratio between the vertical and radial velocity dispersion $\sigma_z/\sigma_R>1$. Observations and theoretical models of the star-forming molecular gas in the central molecular zone suggest that large vertical oscillations may be already imprinted at stellar birth. However, the finding $\sigma_z/\sigma_R > 1$ depends on a drop in the velocity dispersion in the innermost few tens of parsecs, on our assumption that the NSD is axisymmetric, and that the available (extinction corrected) stellar samples broadly trace the underlying light and mass distributions, all of which need to be established by future observations and/or modelling. The characterisation of the extinction curve in the near infrared (NIR) is fundamental to analyse the structure and stellar population of the Galactic centre (GC), whose analysis is hampered by the extreme interstellar extinction ($A_V\sim 30$ mag) that varies on arc-second scales. Recent studies indicate that the behaviour of the extinction curve might be more complex than previously assumed, pointing towards a variation of the extinction curve as a function of wavelength. We aim at analysing the variations of the extinction index, $\alpha$, with wavelength, line-of-sight, and absolute extinction, extending previous analysis to a larger area of the innermost regions of the Galaxy. We analysed the whole GALACTICNUCLEUS survey, a high-angular resolution ($\sim 0.2''$) $JHK_s$ NIR survey specially designed to observe the GC in unprecedented detail. It covers a region of $\sim 6000$\,pc$^2$, comprising fields in the nuclear stellar disc, the inner bulge, and the transition region between them. We applied two independent methods based on red clump (RC) stars to constrain the extinction curve and analysed its variation superseding previous studies. We used more than 165,000 RC stars and increased significantly the size of the regions analysed to confirm that the extinction curve varies with the wavelength. We estimated a difference $\Delta\alpha = 0.21\pm0.07$ between the obtained extinction indices, $\alpha_{JH}=2.44\pm0.05$ and $\alpha_{HK_s} = 2.23\pm0.05$. We also concluded that there is no significant variation of the extinction curve with wavelength, with the line-of-sight or the absolute extinction. Finally, we computed the ratios between extinctions, $A_J/A_H = 1.87\pm0.03$ and $A_{H}/A_{K_s} = 1.84\pm0.03$, consistent with all the regions of the GALACTICNUCLEUS catalogue., Comment: 10 pages, 8 figures, accepted for publication in Astronomy & Astrophysics

Due to the extreme extinction towards the Galactic centre ($A_{V} \sim 30$ mag), its stellar population is mainly studied in the near-infrared (NIR) regime. Therefore, a proper analysis of the NIR extinction curve is necessary to fully characterise the stellar structure and population of the inner part of the galaxy. We studied the dependence of the extinction index ($\alpha_\lambda$) in the NIR on the line of sight, wavelength, and extinction. We used the GALACTICNUCLEUS imaging survey, a high angular resolution catalogue ($0.2''$) for the inner part of the Galaxy in $JHK_s$, and studied the spatial variation in the extinction index. We also applied two independent methods based on red clump stars to compute the extinction index between different bands and its variation with wavelength. We did not detect any significant line-of-sight or extinction variation in $\alpha$ within the studied region in the nuclear stellar disc. The extinction index between $JH$ and $HK_s$ differs by $0.19 \pm 0.05$. We obtained mean values for the extinction indices $\alpha_{JH} = 2.43\pm0.03$ and $\alpha_{HK_s} = 2.23\pm0.03$. The dependence of the extinction index on the wavelength could explain the differences obtained for $\alpha_\lambda$ in the literature since it was assumed constant for the NIR regime., Comment: Accepted for publication in A&A. 5 pages, 5 figures

The high extinction and extreme source crowding of the central regions of the Milky Way are serious obstacles to the study of the structure and stellar population of the Galactic centre (GC). Existing surveys that cover the GC region (2MASS, UKIDSS, VVV, SIRIUS) do not have the necessary high angular resolution. Therefore, a high-angular-resolution survey in the near infrared is crucial to improve the state of the art. Here, we present the GALACTICNUCLEUS catalogue, a near infrared $JHK_s$ high-angular-resolution ($0.2''$) survey of the nuclear bulge of the Milky Way. We explain in detail the data reduction, data analysis, calibration, and uncertainty estimation of the GALACTICNUCLEUS survey. We assess the data quality comparing our results with previous surveys. We obtained accurate $JHK_s$ photometry for $\sim 3.3\times10^6$ stars in the GC detecting around 20 \% in $J$, 65 \% in $H,$ and 90 \% in $K_s$. The survey covers a total area of $\sim0.3$ square degrees, which corresponds to $\sim 6,000$ pc$^2$. The GALACTICNUCLEUS survey reaches 5\,$\sigma$ detections for $J \sim 22$ mag, $H \sim 21$ mag, and $K_s \sim 21$ mag. The uncertainties are below 0.05 mag at $J \sim 21$ mag, $H \sim 19$ mag, and $K_s \sim 18$ mag. The zero point systematic uncertainty is $\lesssim0.04$ mag in all three bands. Because of strong and spatially highly variable interstellar extinction and extreme source crowding, the faint (K>15) stellar population in the Milky Way's nuclear cluster is still poorly studied. RR Lyrae stars provide us with a tool to estimate the mass of the oldest, relative dim stellar population. Recently, we analyzed HST/WFC3/IR observations of the central 2.3'x2.3' of the Milky Way and found 21 variable stars with periods between 0.2 and 1d. Here, we present a further comprehensive analysis of these stars. The period-luminosity relationship of RR Lyrae is used to derive their extinctions and distances. Using multiple approaches, we classify our sample as four RRc, four RRab and three candidates, ten binaries. Especially, the four RRabs show sawtooth light curves and fall exactly onto the Oosterhoff I division in the Bailey diagram. Compared to the RRabs reported by Minniti et al, 2016, our new RRabs have higher extinction (A_K>1.8) and should be closer to the Galactic Centre. The extinction and distance of one RRab match those for the nuclear star cluster given in previous works. We perform simulations and find that after correcting for incompleteness, there could be no more than 40 RRabs within the nuclear star cluster and in our field-of-view. Through comparing with the known globular clusters of the Milky Way, we estimate that if there exists an old, metal-poor (-1.5<[Fe/H]<-1) stellar population in the Milky Way nuclear star cluster on a scale of 5x5pc, then it contributes at most 4.7x10^5 solar mass, i.e., ~18% of the stellar mass., Comment: 33 pages, 10 figures. We present new [Ne II] (12.8 micron) IRTF/TEXES observations of the Galactic Center HII regions H1 and H2, which are at a projected distance of ~11 pc from the center of the Galaxy. The new observations allow to map the radial velocity distributions of ionized gas. The high spectroscopic resolution (~4 km/s) helps us to disentangle different velocity components and enables us to resolve previous ambiguity regarding the nature of these sources. The spatial distributions of the intensity and radial velocity of the [Ne II] line are mapped. In H1, the intensity distributions of the Paschen-\alpha (1.87 micron) and [Ne II] lines are significantly different, which suggests a strong variation of extinction across the HII region of A_K~0.56. The radial velocity distributions across these HII regions are consistent with the predictions of a bow-shock model for H1 and the pressure-driven model for H2. Furthermore, we find a concentration of bright stars in H2. These stars have similar H-K_s colors and can be explained as part of a 2 Myr old stellar cluster. H2 also falls on the orbit of the molecular clouds, suggested to be around Sgr A*. Our new results confirm what we had previously suggested: the O supergiant P114 in H1 is a runaway star, moving towards us through the -30-0 {km/s} molecular cloud, whereas the O If star P35 in H2 formed in-situ, and may mark the position of a so-far unknown small star cluster formed within the central 30 pc of the Galaxy., Comment: The paper has been accepted to be published in MNRAS, 30 pages, 14 figures

We used four-year baseline HST/WFC3 IR observations of the Galactic Centre in the F153M band (1.53 micron) to identify variable stars in the central ~2.3'x2.3' field. We classified 3845 long-term (periods from months to years) and 76 short-term (periods of a few days or less) variables among a total sample of 33070 stars. For 36 of the latter ones, we also derived their periods (<3 days). Our catalog not only confirms bright long period variables and massive eclipsing binaries identified in previous works, but also contains many newly recognized dim variable stars. For example, we found \delta Scuti and RR Lyrae stars towards the Galactic Centre for the first time, as well as one BL Her star (period < 1.3 d). We cross-correlated our catalog with previous spectroscopic studies and found that 319 variables have well-defined stellar types, such as Wolf-Rayet, OB main sequence, supergiants and asymptotic giant branch stars. We used colours and magnitudes to infer the probable variable types for those stars without accurately measured periods or spectroscopic information. We conclude that the majority of unclassified variables could potentially be eclipsing/ellipsoidal binaries and Type II Cepheids.
