2. Spectral Efficiency Enhancement of FM-OFDM Waveform Using Offset Modulation Techniques

Abstract

This letter proposes two novel modulation schemes aimed at enhancing the spectral efficiency of the frequency modulated-orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (FM-OFDM) waveform. These modulation schemes, namely amplitude offset modulation and phase offset modulation, exploit the confinement of the amplitude or phase of FM-OFDM signal. By applying different levels of amplitude or phase offset in accordance with the additional input bit, it becomes possible to transmit more data alongside the original data inherent in the FM-OFDM signal, without consuming additional wireless resources. The transmitter and receiver structures for processing amplitude and phase offset-based modulation and demodulation are also described. It is shown through simulation that the proposed amplitude and phase offset modulation schemes are quite useful to enhance the spectral efficiency of the FM-OFDM waveform while maintaining the link performance.

7. On the Feasibility of Remote Driving Applications Over mmWave 5G Vehicular Communications: Implementation and Demonstration

Abstract

This paper presents a study conducted for the feasibility validation of a remote driving application, which is one of the use cases of 5G Vehicle-to-everything (V2X), over millimeter-wave (mmWave) 5G New Radio (NR) vehicular communications. First, the overall network architecture of a typical mmWave 5G NR communication system and design details of essential system components for remote driving applications are provided. Then, we discuss key technologies, including beam switching, automatic gain control, uplink transmit power control, and hybrid automatic repeat request with soft combining, enabling the system to offer reliable communication links for remote driving support. Lastly, we describe the implementation and deployment of testbeds and provide the experimental results obtained from field trials. The field trial results reveal that leveraged by the key enabling technologies and mmWave providing a wider spectrum and shortened latency, the mmWave 5G NR vehicular communication system has the capability to provide broadband, reliable, and low-latency communication links for the realization of remote driving applications, which eventually paves the road towards expanding the applicability of mmWave communication systems.

Abstract

We consider the problem of bit error rate (BER) degradation because of the power gain imbalance between horizontal ( H)-polarization and vertical ( V)-polarization components in an orthogonal dual-polarization transmission system. To alleviate the aforementioned BER degradation problem, we propose a non-orthogonal polarization-domain rotation scheme where the axes of H-polarization and V-polarization components are rotated with different angles at the transmitter and de-rotated at the receiver. In addition, in order to assess the effectiveness of the polarization-domain rotation scheme, we derive the closed-form BER expression under a practical dual-polarized channel model, which is represented by cross-polarization ratio and co-polarization ratio (CPR). We also derive the approximated BER expressions for the two asymptotic values of CPR: balanced CPR and infinite CPR. With the derived BER expressions, we find the optimal rotation angles that jointly minimize the BER. According to the numerical results, it is shown that about 3dB E b/ N0 gain is obtained at the BER of 10−4 and the CPR of 10dB by the polarization-domain rotation scheme with optimal rotation angles compared with the conventional orthogonal dual-polarization transmission.
