There is an association between noise exposure and cognitive impairment, and noise may have a more severe impact on patients with Alzheimer's disease (AD) and mild cognitive impairment; however, the mechanisms need further investigation. This study used the classic AD animal model APP/PS1 mice to simulate the AD population, and C57BL/6J mice to simulate the normal population. We compared their cognitive abilities after noise exposure, analyzed changes in Cluster of Differentiation (CD) between the two types of mice using transcriptomics, identified the differential CD molecule: CD36 in APP/PS1 after noise exposure, and used its pharmacological inhibitor to intervene to explore the mechanism by which CD36 affects APP/PS1 cognitive abilities. Our study shows that noise exposure has a more severe impact on the cognitive abilities of APP/PS1 mice, and that the expression trends of differentiation cluster molecules differ significantly between C57BL/6J and APP/PS1 mice. Transcriptomic analysis showed that the expression of CD36 in the hippocampus of APP/PS1 mice increased by 2.45-fold after noise exposure (p < 0.001). Meanwhile, Western Blot results from the hippocampus and entorhinal cortex indicated that CD36 protein levels increased by approximately 1.5-fold (p < 0.001) and 1.3-fold (p < 0.05) respectively, after noise exposure in APP/PS1 mice. The changes in CD36 expression elevated oxidative stress levels in the hippocampus and entorhinal cortex, leading to a decrease in PI3K/AKT phosphorylation, which in turn increased M1-type microglia and A1-type astrocytes while reducing the numbers of M2-type microglia and A2-type astrocytes. This increased neuroinflammation in the hippocampus and entorhinal cortex, causing synaptic and neuronal damage in APP/PS1 mice, ultimately exacerbating cognitive impairment. Background: Pediatric hypertension is linked to environmental factors like neighborhood noise disrupting sleep, which is crucial for health. The specific interaction between noise and sleep health in causing hypertension still needs to be explored., Methods and Results: We analyzed data from 3320 participants of the ABCD (Adolescent Brain Cognitive Development) study, recruited across 21 US cities and monitored from 2018 to 2020 through 2020 to 2022. Participants with complete data on Fitbit-tracked sleep, blood pressure, height, neighborhood noise, and covariates (biological sex, race and ethnicity, pubertal stage, waist circumference) were included. Hypertension was defined as average blood pressure ≥95th percentile for age, sex, and height. Sleep health was categorized on the basis of daily duration: healthy (9-12 hours), moderately healthy (±1 hour from optimal), and low (≥1 hour deviation). Noise exposure was measured as median nighttime anthropogenic noise levels by zip code. The incidence of hypertension increased from 1.7% (95% CI, 1.4-2.1) in 2018 to 2020 to 2.9% (95% CI, 2.4-3.6) in 2020 to 2022. Adolescents with healthier sleep had a lower risk of developing hypertension (relative risk, 0.63 [95% CI, 0.25-0.82]), while no significant effects were found for neighborhood noise alone or in combination with sleep health., Conclusions: Adequate sleep significantly reduces the risk of hypertension in adolescents, independent of environmental noise exposure. These findings underscore the importance of promoting good sleep hygiene among youth to mitigate hypertension risk.

Background: Noise and air pollution are significant environmental threats with proven adverse health effects. However, the causality between these ambient exposures and disease is still largely unknown. This study aims to provide genetic evidence for this gap and investigates the dual role of inflammatory factors, emphasizing the need for integrated public health strategies., Methods: We included noise and air pollution as exposures, 91 inflammatory factors as mediators, and 26 diseases as outcomes. We explored causal relationships using Mendelian randomization. To ensure the reliability, we screened single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) closely associated with exposure as instrumental variables (IVs), and assessed the pleiotropy and heterogeneity of these IVs., Results: Our results suggest that "Hearing difficulty/problems with background noise" increases the risk of hypertension, bronchitis, and menopause; loud music exposure frequency increases the risk of bronchitis; noisy workplace raises the risk of hypertension, coronary heart disease, narcolepsy, and irritable bowel syndrome; NO 2 increases the risk of myocardial infarction and chronic heart failure; NO x increases the risk of pneumonia and inflammatory diseases of female pelvic organs; and PM 10 increases the risk of myocardial infarction, narcolepsy, and type 2 diabetes; PM 2.5 - 10 increases the risk of developing pneumonia and type 2 diabetes. Furthermore, we found that nine inflammatory factors play a mediating role, of which four play a mediating role in increasing the risk of morbidity and eight play a mediating role in protection against ambient exposures. Finally, we selected SNPs significantly associated with exposure and outcome for enrichment analysis., Conclusions: This study provides the first genetic evidence linking noise and air pollution to various diseases, highlighting the dual mediating role of inflammatory factors. Our findings align with the "One Health" framework, emphasizing the interconnectedness of environmental and human health. Temporal coherence, where sounds with aligned timing patterns are perceived as a single source, is considered an essential cue in auditory scene analysis. However, its effects have been studied primarily with simple repeating tones, rather than speech. This study investigated the role of temporal coherence in speech by introducing across-frequency asynchronies. The effect of asynchrony on the intelligibility of target sentences was tested in the presence of background speech-shaped noise or a single-talker interferer. Our hypothesis was that disrupting temporal coherence should not only reduce intelligibility but also impair listeners' ability to segregate the target speech from an interfering talker, leading to greater degradation for speech-in-speech than speech-in-noise tasks. Stimuli were filtered into eight frequency bands, which were then desynchronized with delays of 0-120 ms. As expected, intelligibility declined as asynchrony increased. However, the decline was similar for both noise and single-talker maskers. Primarily target, rather than masker, asynchrony affected performance for both natural (forward) and reversed-speech maskers, and for target sentences with low and high semantic context. The results suggest that temporal coherence may not be as critical a cue for speech segregation as it is for the non-speech stimuli traditionally used in studies of auditory scene analysis., (© 2024 Acoustical Society of America.)

Polycystic Kidney and Hepatic Disease 1-Like 1 (PKHD1L1) is a human deafness gene, responsible for autosomal recessive deafness-124 (DFNB124). Sensory hair cells of the cochlea are essential for hearing, relying on the mechanosensitive stereocilia bundle at their apical pole for their function. PKHD1L1 is a stereocilia protein required for the formation of the developmentally transient stereocilia surface coat. In this study, we carry out an in depth characterization of PKHD1L1 expression in mice during development and adulthood, analyze hair-cell bundle morphology and hearing function in aging PKHD1L1-deficient mouse lines, and assess their susceptibility to noise damage. Our findings reveal that PKHD1L1-deficient mice display no disruption to bundle cohesion or tectorial membrane attachment-crown formation during development. However, starting from 6 weeks of age, PKHD1L1-deficient mice display missing stereocilia and disruptions to bundle coherence. Both conditional and constitutive PKHD1L1 knockout mice develop high-frequency hearing loss progressing to lower frequencies with age. Furthermore, PKHD1L1-deficient mice are susceptible to permanent hearing loss following moderate acoustic overexposure, which induces only temporary hearing threshold shifts in wild-type mice. These results suggest a role for PKHD1L1 in establishing robust sensory hair bundles during development, necessary for maintaining bundle cohesion and function in response to acoustic trauma and aging., (© 2024. The soundscape approach has been utilised in recent research for residential environments, but applications to indoor working environments remain limited. This study investigated the suitability of affective quality evaluations of open-plan office acoustics. Perceptual assessments were completed by occupants of eight open-plan office floorplates, using affective dimensions outlined in PD ISO/TS 12913-3:2019 and indoor soundscape studies. Participant demographic, contextual, work-related quality, and psychological well-being data were collected. Workstation noise levels were measured following BS ISO 22955:2021. Principal component analysis identified Pleasantness, Eventfulness, and Emptiness as the main perceptual dimensions, cumulatively explaining 56% of the total variance. Results indicate the suitability of the PD ISO/TS 12913-3:2019 two-dimensional model for open-plan offices. The perceived presence of human sounds negatively correlated with ISO Pleasantness yet positively correlated with ISO Eventfulness. Participant gender and aural diversity mediated ISO Pleasantness. Psychological well-being and work-related quality correlated positively with soundscape pleasantness. No correlations were found between level-based acoustical indicators-equivalent continuous sound level (LAeq), level exceeded 10% (LA10) and 90% (LA90) of the time, level variability (LA10-LA90) and Liveliness-and perceptual scores. Background: Noise pollution pervades daily working and living environment, becoming a serious public health problem. In addition to causing auditory impairment, noise independently contributes to cognitive decline as a risk factor. Though neuroinflammation plays an important role in noise-induced cognitive deficits, the mechanisms underlying noise-induced neuroinflammation in the hippocampus are still poorly understood. Glial hyperactivation of the NLRP3 inflammasome contributes to various neurodegenerative diseases, including Alzheimer's disease (AD) and Parkinson's disease (PD). However, whether the NLRP3 inflammasome plays a role in noise-induced cognitive impairment remains to be further investigated., Methods: Adult male Wistar rats were exposed to 100 dB white noise (4 h/day) for 30 days with or without injection of the NLRP3 inhibitor MCC950 (10 mg/kg/day). The Morris water maze (MWM) test and the open field test (OFT) were performed to evaluate learning and memory ability of rats. HE staining was used to explore hippocampal pathological changes, while immunohistochemical staining was employed to evaluate the number and morphology of microglia and astrocytes. The mRNA levels of the NLRP3 inflammasome in the hippocampus were examined by Real-time PCR. The protein levels of NLRP3 inflammasome, inflammatory cytokines, p-Tau-S396, and amyloid-β (Aβ) 42 in the hippocampus were examined by Western blot. Immunofluorescence was used to observe the distribution of NLRP3 in glial cells and neurons, and the assembly of the NLRP3 inflammasome., Results: We found that noise exposure induced learning and memory impairment in rats, mainly related to the activation of microglia and astrocytes in hippocampus region. Noise exposure increased the protein levels of p-Tau-S396, Aβ42, ionized calcium binding adapter molecule 1 (Iba-1), glial fibrillary acidic protein (GFAP), interleukin (IL)-1β, IL-18, and tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α) in hippocampus. Furthermore, the hippocampus of noise-exposed rats showed elevated protein levels of NLRP3, ASC and cleaved caspase-1. The co-labeled immunofluorescence levels of Iba-1 or GFAP with NLRP3 significantly increased in the dentate gyrus (DG) region of the hippocampus. NLRP3 inhibitor MCC950 intervention reversed chronic noise-induced activation of NLRP3 inflammasome, AD-like pathologies and impairment of learning and memory in rats., Conclusions: The NLRP3 inflammasome-mediated neuroinflammation played an essential role in chronic noise-induced cognitive dysfunction. Exposure to loud sound during leisure time is identified as a significant risk factor for hearing by health authorities worldwide. The current standard that defines unsafe exposure rests on the equal-energy hypothesis, according to which the maximum recommended exposure is a tradeoff between level and daily exposure duration, a satisfactory recipe except for strongly non-Gaussian intense sounds such as gunshots. Nowadays, sound broadcast by music and videoconference streaming services makes extensive use of numerical dynamic range compression. By filling in millisecond-long valleys in the signal to prevent competing noise from masking, it pulls sound-level statistics away from a Gaussian distribution, the framework where the equal-energy hypothesis emerged. Auditory effects of a single 4 hour exposure to the same music were compared in two samples of guinea pigs exposed either to its original or overcompressed version played at the same average level of 102 dBA allowed by French regulations. Apart from a temporary shift of otoacoustic emissions at the lowest two frequencies 2 and 3 kHz, music exposure had no detectable cochlear effect, as monitored at 1, 2 and 7 days post-exposure. Conversely, middle-ear muscle strength behaved differentially as the group exposed to original music had fully recovered one day after exposure whereas the group exposed to overcompressed music remained stuck to about 50% of baseline even after 7 days. Subsamples were then re-exposed to the same music as the first time and sacrificed for density measurements of inner-hair-cell synapses. No difference in synaptic density was found compared to unexposed controls with either type of music. The present results show that the same music piece, harmless when played in its original version, induces a protracted deficit of one auditory neural pathway when overcompressed at the same level. Cochlear tuning and hence auditory frequency selectivity are thought to change in noisy environments by activation of the medial olivocochlear reflex (MOCR). In humans, auditory frequency selectivity is often assessed using psychoacoustical tuning curves (PTCs), a plot of the level required for pure-tone maskers to just mask a fixed-level pure-tone probe as a function of masker frequency. Sometimes, however, the stimuli used to measure a PTC are long enough that they can activate the MOCR by themselves and thus affect the PTC. Here, PTCs for probe frequencies of 500 Hz and 4 kHz were measured in forward masking using short maskers (30 ms) and probes (10 ms) to minimize the activation of the MOCR by the maskers or the probes. PTCs were also measured in the presence of long (300 ms) ipsilateral, contralateral, and bilateral broadband noise precursors to investigate the effect of the ipsilateral, contralateral, and bilateral MOCR on PTC tuning. Four listeners with normal hearing participated in the experiments. At 500 Hz, ipsilateral and bilateral precursors sharpened the PTCs by decreasing the thresholds for maskers with frequencies at or near the probe frequency with minimal effects on thresholds for maskers remote in frequency from the probe. At 4 kHz, by contrast, ipsilateral and bilateral precursors barely affected thresholds for maskers near the probe frequency but broadened PTCs by reducing thresholds for maskers far from the probe. Contralateral precursors barely affected PTCs. An existing computational model was used to interpret the results. During the operational phase of offshore wind farms, the generation of low-frequency underwater noise has received widespread attention due to its potential adverse impact on fish health. This study conducted a field survey of underwater noise at offshore wind farms located in Shandong province, China. Subsequently, a small-scale experiment was conducted to study the stress on black rockfish (Sebastes schlegelii). The fish were exposed to noise with dominant frequency of 80 Hz, 125 Hz and 250 Hz. These frequencies are same with the frequencies from wind power noise (wpn) at the actual site. After a 40-day experimental period, transcriptome sequencing was conducted on brain, liver, and kidney tissues of black rockfish to elucidate the underlying molecular mechanisms involved in the response to noise stress originating from offshore wind farms. The results revealed that the 125 Hz group exhibited the highest number of differentially expressed genes (DEGs) between the noise-exposed and control check group (CK group), with a total of 797 in the brain, 1076 in the liver, and 2468 in the kidney. Gene Ontology (GO) analysis showed that DEGs were significantly enriched in entries related to cellular processes, membrane components, binding, and metabolism. Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes (KEGG) analysis showed that DEGs were enriched mainly in metabolism, immunity, apoptosis, signal transduction, and diseases. Over the last decade, multiple studies have shown that hearing-impaired listeners' speech-in-noise reception ability, measured with audibility compensation, is closely associated with performance in spectro-temporal modulation (STM) detection tests. STM tests thus have the potential to provide highly relevant beyond-the-audiogram information in the clinic, but the available STM tests have not been optimized for clinical use in terms of test duration, required equipment, and procedural standardization. The present study introduces a quick-and-simple clinically viable STM test, named the Audible Contrast Threshold (ACT™) test. First, an experimenter-controlled STM measurement paradigm was developed, in which the patient is presented bilaterally with a continuous audibility-corrected noise via headphones and asked to press a pushbutton whenever they hear an STM target sound in the noise. The patient's threshold is established using a Hughson-Westlake tracking procedure with a three-out-of-five criterion and then refined by post-processing the collected data using a logistic function. Different stimulation paradigms were tested in 28 hearing-impaired participants and compared to data previously measured in the same participants with an established STM test paradigm. The best stimulation paradigm showed excellent test-retest reliability and good agreement with the established laboratory version. Second, the best stimulation paradigm with 1-second noise "waves" (windowed noise) was chosen, further optimized with respect to step size and logistic-function fitting, and tested in a population of 25 young normal-hearing participants using various types of transducers to obtain normative data. Based on these normative data, the "normalized Contrast Level" (in dB nCL) scale was defined, where 0 ± 4 dB nCL corresponds to normal performance and elevated dB nCL values indicate the degree of audible contrast loss. Overall, the results of the present study suggest that the ACT test may be considered a reliable, quick-and-simple (and thus clinically viable) test of STM sensitivity. Background: The quality of the sleep in the intensive care unit (ICU) is generally poor. It is known that several factors contribute to this situation., Aim: To describe the experiences of adult patients during night-time sleep in the ICU., Design: A qualitative study using a phenomenological approach was conducted from May to October 2021. Patients were intensive care patients (n = 10) who were treated for at least 24 h in tertiary ICUs., Methods: The data were obtained through semi-structured interviews based on an interview guide. A qualitative content analysis using an inductive approach was performed., Results: The analysis resulted in three main themes: (a) inadequate sleep at night; (b) factors negatively affecting night-time sleep; and (c) patient expectations for improved night-time sleep. Night-time sleep of patients treated in intensive care were determined to generally have inadequate and be interrupted. Patients associated the cause of this situation with the physical environment conditions in the ICU, loud noises made by health employees and emotional reactions. It was stated that some physical environment changes that can be made in ICUs and psychological support will positively affect sleep., Conclusions: Intensive care patients may not have quality night-time sleep because of multifactorial reasons. Noise in the ICU is a significant factor preventing patients from sleeping. In addition to reorganization of the physical environment to ensure adequate sleep, there is a need for an integrated approach dealing with patients' feelings and concerns., Relevance to Clinical Practice: Each patient has their own unique sleep pattern. Recent research has become increasingly interested in the on-linear associations between noise levels and people's short-term noise annoyance. However, there has been limited investigation into measuring short-term noise annoyance and how different activity contexts may affect these non-linear associations. To address this research gap, this study measured people's short-term noise annoyance using real-time Ecological Momentary Assessment (EMA) data and the Day Reconstruction Method's (DRM) recalled data. Corresponding noise levels were captured using Global Positioning Systems and portable noise sensors. Employing the Shapley additive explanations method, we examined the non-linear associations between noise level and people's real-time and recalled noise annoyance across different activity contexts. The results indicated that 1) People had greater sensitivity to noise levels in real-time annoyance (non-linear association threshold: 60 dB) compared to recalled annoyance, which had a higher non-linear association threshold of 70 dB. 2) The non-linear associations between noise level and people's real-time/recalled noise annoyance varied between different activity contexts. People tended to be more sensitive to noise in real-time annoyance than recalled annoyance on travel routes and at workplaces. 3) Among the factors examined, the contribution of noise level varied across activity contexts. Noise level contributed more significantly to people's real-time noise annoyance in outdoor recreational sites and on travel routes. These findings enhance our understanding of the non-linear association between noise level and people's short-term noise annoyance, moving beyond the linear paradigm. Objective: Young adults are at risk for hearing loss caused by exposure to loud music. Intervention at this stage provides opportunities to support lifelong hearing protection use. This study explores attitudes related to hearing, hearing loss, and hearing protection among university students., Design: Qualitative interview design, supplemented by quantitative questionnaire data., Study Sample: 18 university students, aged 18-24 years., Results: Students were uncertain about mechanisms of noise-induced hearing loss, did not feel vulnerable to permanent hearing damage from loud music, were unconvinced of hearing protection efficacy, and reported barriers to hearing protection use. Students emphasised the positive effects of loud music and reported an increased likelihood of using hearing protection were it used by peers. Music students appeared more aware of the negative effects of loud music exposure. Students reported conflicting attitudes regarding government regulation of hearing protection use., Conclusion: Young adults require education about hearing protection from multiple, credible sources and need to understand the mechanisms behind noise-induced hearing loss in a way that makes it of high personal relevance.

This study aimed to investigate the effects of combined exposure to noise (85 dB(A)) and inhaled Toluene (300 ± 10 ppm) on rat lung health. It also aimed to assess the potential therapeutic effects of Olea europaea L. leaves extract (OLE) (40 mg/kg/day) using biochemical, histopathological, and immunohistochemical (IHC) analyses, as well as determination of pro-inflammatory cytokines (TNF-α and IL-1β), and in silico Docking studies. The experiment involved forty-two male Wistar rats divided into seven groups, each exposed to a 6-week/6-hour/day regimen of noise and Toluene. The groups included a control group, rats co-exposed to noise and Toluene, and rats co-exposed to noise and Toluene treated with OLE for different durations. The results indicated that noise and Toluene exposure led to structural damage in lung tissue, oxidative harm, and increased levels of pro-inflammatory cytokines (TNF-α and IL-1β). However, the administration of OLE extract demonstrated positive effects in mitigating these adverse outcomes. OLE treatment reduced lipid peroxidation and enhanced the activities of catalase and superoxide dismutase, indicating its anti-oxidant properties. Furthermore, OLE significantly decreased the levels of pro-inflammatory cytokines compared to the groups exposed to noise and Toluene without OLE treatment. Moreover, the in silico investigation substantiated a robust affinity between COX-2 and OLE components, affirming the anti-inflammatory activity. Overall, our findings suggest that OLE possesses anti-inflammatory and anti-oxidative properties that mitigate the adverse effects of concurrent exposure to noise and Toluene.

Firefighters reside in inherently noisy environments with sirens and emergency alarms. This noise can negatively affect the performance of firefighters and further pose a safety risk. This study investigates the relationship between siren noise exposure and its mental health disorders. In doing so, the study focuses on cognitive function among firefighters, using a Bayesian network model for the first time. This case-control study involved 92 firefighters and was conducted in 2023. Participants were categorized into case and control groups based on their exposure levels to siren noise. Noise exposures were initially measured according to ISO 9612 standards. The questionnaires covered demographic information, scales of their depression, anxiety, and stress, the Buss-Perry aggression questionnaire, and the cognitive failure questionnaire. GeNIe academic software version 2.3 was employed for Bayesian network analysis. The study results indicated a strong association that heightened siren noise exposure with a 100% probability increases depression (10%), stress (14%), anxiety (13%), and aggression (16%). In addition, each variable-noise exposure, depression, stress, anxiety, and aggression was linked to cognitive failure by 8%, 28%, 8%, and 13%, respectively. The combination of variables including noise exposure, depression, anxiety, and other mental health disorders had a 57% increase in cognitive failure. The most influence values were observed between depression and cognitive failures (0.564). The results of this study demonstrated the effect of siren noise exposure and its mental health disorders on cognitive function among firefighters. Endolymphatic hydrops, increased endolymphatic fluid within the cochlea, is the key pathologic finding in patients with Meniere's disease, a disease of episodic vertigo, fluctuating hearing loss, tinnitus, and aural fullness. Endolymphatic hydrops also can occur after noise trauma and its presence correlates with cochlear synaptopathy, a form of hearing loss caused by reduced numbers of synapses between hair cells and auditory nerve fibers. Here we tested whether there is a mechanistic link between these two phenomena by using multimodal imaging techniques to analyze the cochleae of transgenic mice exposed to blast and osmotic challenge. In vivo cochlear imaging after blast exposure revealed dynamic increases in endolymph that involved hair cell mechanoelectrical transduction channel block but not the synaptic release of glutamate at the hair cell-auditory nerve synapse. In contrast, ex vivo and in vivo auditory nerve imaging revealed that synaptopathy requires glutamate release from hair cells but not endolymphatic hydrops. Thus, although endolymphatic hydrops and cochlear synaptopathy are both observed after noise exposure, one does not cause the other. They are simply co-existent sequelae that derive from the traumatic stimulation of hair cell stereociliary bundles. Background:  Animal audiology utilizes brainstem auditory evoked responses (BAER) as a non-invasive tool to assess hearing in animals, including Holstein dairy cows. Understanding cows' auditory capabilities is critical for their welfare, especially given their exposure to farm noise., Objectives:  This study provides preliminary normative BAER data for Holstein cows by focusing on absolute and interpeak wave latencies. The objective is to assess the impact of farm noise and expand audiologists' practice scope., Method:  Ten Holstein cows were tested using monoaural broadband click stimuli with contralateral masking. Earphones with foam ear tips were used to minimize environmental noise interference. The BAER responses were recorded via subdermal needle electrodes placed at standardized locations on the cows' heads. The data were analysed using descriptive statistics to determine auditory thresholds and wave latencies., Results:  The cows exhibited auditory thresholds at 90 dB SPL (55 dB nHL). Detailed wave and interpeak latencies were recorded at intensities from 85 to 105 dB SPL. At 90 dB SPL, the average latency for wave V was 5.17 ms, marking the auditory threshold for Holstein cows., Conclusion:  These findings provide key insights into the auditory sensitivity of Holstein cows, highlighting BAER's potential for monitoring auditory health and evaluating the effects of noise pollution on animal welfare. This research underscores the value of integrating animal audiology into the audiologist's scope, ultimately enhancing both animal welfare and farming sustainability.Contribution: This study adds to the limited literature on farm animal auditory health and suggests strategies to improve welfare through better auditory management.

Background: Environmental surroundings reduce the rate of several diseases, especially those related to stressful events. Ischemic stroke can be affected by such events, either directly or through its risk factors. Therefore, the present study evaluates the effects of green spaces and noise exposure on the risk of ischemic stroke., Methods: A case-control study was carried out, including 200 ischemic stroke cases within the first 48 h of diagnosis and 200 controls, divided equally into hospitalized and non-hospitalized participants. Controls were matched to cases based on age and gender. Socio-demographic characteristics were assessed, in addition to environmental surroundings and noise exposure at home and at workplaces., Results: Living in a house, having a house garden, and taking care of the garden were associated with a lower risk of suffering an ischemic stroke ( p < 0.001, p < 0.001, and p = 0.009, respectively). However, having buildings as the view from home led to a higher stroke rate ( p < 0.001). Working in an urban area, the workplace being surrounded by buildings, and the workplace not being surrounded by green spaces were also associated with a higher risk of suffering an ischemic stroke ( p = 0.002, p = 0.001, and p = 0.03, respectively). As for noise exposure, being exposed to traffic noise, human noise, and other types of noise was significantly associated with a higher risk of ischemic stroke, while being exposed to higher levels of natural noise was significantly associated with a lower risk of ischemic stroke. Higher levels of noise were also associated with higher risks of ischemic stroke in homes and workplaces ( p < 0.001 and p = 0.008, respectively)., Conclusions: Environmental surroundings and noise exposure were found to affect the risk of ischemic stroke. Greater green spaces and lower noise exposure play a protective role against ischemic stroke, suggesting a possible prevention strategy through environmental modifications at home and workplaces.

The effects of prolonged infrasound (IS) exposure on brain function and behavior are largely unknown, with only one prior study investigating functional connectivity (FC) changes. In a long-term randomized-controlled trial, 38 participants were exposed to inaudible airborne IS (6 Hz, 80-90 dB) or sham devices for four weeks (8 h/night). We assessed FC changes in resting-state networks (auditory, default mode (DMN), sensorimotor (SMN), and executive control (ECN)), and explored IS 'sensitivity' as a predictor of identified significant FC changes. We also examined correlations between somatic symptoms and FC. IS exposure led to decreased FC in the right precuneus (DMN) and increased FC in the Vermis IV and V (SMN). In the ECN, we observed increased FC in the right frontal middle gyrus (BA8) and the right inferior parietal lobe, and decreased FC in another region of the right frontal middle gyrus. Changes in the ECN (right inferior parietal lobe) were negatively associated with self-reported annoyance from IS/low-frequency noise. A significant negative association was found between FC changes in the DMN (right precuneus) and somatic symptoms. Our study is the first to investigate prolonged IS exposure effects on brain FC, revealing changes in the vDMN, SMN, and ECN, but not in the auditory network. Future studies should assess annoyance and sensitivity markers, fine-grained measures of somatic symptoms, and stratify samples by sensitivity to uncover individual differences in response to IS., (© 2024. The aim of the present study was to investigate whether the wearing of hearing protection has a positive influence on stress levels during an MRI examination in dogs under anaesthesia. To this end, the stress hormones cortisol and arginine vasopressin (AVP) were measured in the saliva of patients wearing hearing protection during an MRI scan, as well as in the control group without hearing protection, before and after the scan. Pulse rate and noise level were also measured during the MRI. It was shown that salivary cortisol concentrations in dogs without hearing protection increased during the MRI examination, while those in the control group with hearing protection remained the same (p<0.05). The pulse range was greater in the control group without hearing protection, although not statistically significant. The maximum loudness during the MRI examination, measured at 200 cm from the gantry, was 87 dB(A). Migratory fish populations have experienced great declines, and considerable effort have been put into reducing stressors, such as chemical pollution and physical barriers. However, the importance of natural sounds as an information source and potential problems caused by noise pollution remain largely unexplored. The spatial distribution of sound sources and variation in propagation characteristics could provide migratory fish with acoustic cues about habitat suitability, predator presence, food availability and conspecific presence. We here investigated the relationship between natural soundscapes and local river conditions and we explored the presence of human-related sounds in these natural soundscapes. We found that 1a) natural river sound profiles vary with river scale and cross-sectional position, and that 1b) depth, width, water velocity, and distance from shore were all significant factors in explaining local soundscape variation. We also found 2a) audible human activities in almost all our underwater recordings and urban and suburban river parts had elevated sound levels relative to rural river parts. Furthermore, 2b) daytime levels were louder than night time sound levels, and bridges and nearby road traffic were much more prominent with diurnal and weekly patterns of anthropogenic noise in the river systems. We believe our data show high potential for natural soundscapes of low-land river habitat to serve as important environmental cues to migratory fish. Environmental noise is associated with various health outcomes. However, the mechanisms through which these outcomes influence behavior and metabolism remain unclear. This study investigated how environmental noise affects the liver, adipose tissue, and brain metabolic functions, leading to behavioral and body weight changes. Mice were divided into a noise group exposed to construction noise and an unexposed (control) group. Behavior and body weight changes were monitored over 50 days. Early changes in response to noise exposure were assessed by measuring plasma cortisol and glial fibrillary acidic protein expression in brain tissues on days 1, 15, and 30. Chronic responses, including changes in lipoprotein and fat metabolism and neurotransmitters, were investigated by analyzing serum lipoprotein levels and body fat mass and evaluating liver, fat, and brain tissue after 50 days. The noise group showed higher locomotor activity and reduced anxiety in the open-field and Y-maze tests. Noise exposure caused an initial weight loss; however, chronic noise increased fat mass and induced adipocyte hypertrophy. Our findings underscore the role of environmental noise-induced stress in augmenting locomotor activity and reducing anxiety in mice through neurotransmitter modulation while increasing the risk of obesity by decreasing HDL cholesterol levels and promoting adipocyte hypertrophy.

Few studies have explored the association between residential noise exposure and burnout. In this study, we investigated the association between residential noise exposure and burnout prevalence among 5416 health-care workers in Taiwan from 2012 to 2017. Burnout was evaluated using the Mandarin version of the Copenhagen Burnout Inventory by considering both continuous and binary measures. We applied ordinary Kriging models to calculate the annual average residential noise exposure at an individual level. Multivariable linear regression models and logistic regression models were employed. Restricted cubic splines were used to explore dose-response relationships. The median age of the health-care workers was 31.5 years. In the multivariable linear regression models, exposure to residential noise (per 1 dBA) was associated with increases in personal burnout and work-related burnout scores by 1.59 ± 0.25 and 1.38 ± 0.20, respectively. In the multivariable logistic regression models, the adjusted odds ratios were 1.24 (95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.16, 1.32) for personal burnout and 1.19 (95% CI: 1.13, 1.26) for work-related burnout per 1-dBA increase in residential noise exposure. Linear dose-response associations of burnout with residential noise level were detected. Background: Noise-induced cochlear synaptopathy has recently emerged as a focus in hearing research., Purpose: This study aimed to examine the impact of repeated noise exposure on the quantification and mRNA expression levels of cochlear synapses., Methods: Measurements were conducted at baseline, 1 day, and 14 days post-exposure to 88 or 97 dB SPL noise (2 h/day for 7 days, frequency range 2-20 kHz). Auditory brainstem responses (ABRs), immunofluorescence and quantitative real-time PCR (qRT-PCR) were used to examine the results., Results: 1. Exposure to 88 dB SPL caused minimal changes in ABRs, ribbon morphology and medial olivocochlear (MOC) efferent synapses; elevation of synaptophysin(SYP) and α9α10 nAchR mRNA levels were observed. 2. Exposure to 97 dB SPL caused threshold shift and synaptopathy of ribbon and MOC; downregulation of α10nAchR, SYP and ctbp2 mRNA levels were observed., Conclusion: Noise-induced cochlear synaptic degeneration involves both afferent and efferent synaptopathy.

Spectral weighting functions for sound localization were measured in participants with bilateral mild sloping to moderately severe, high-frequency sensorineural hearing loss (SNHL) and compared to normal hearing (NH) participants with and without simulated SNHL. Each participant group localized three types of complex tones, comprised of seven frequency components spatially jittered and presented from the horizontal frontal field. A threshold-elevating noise masker was implemented in the free field to simulate SNHL for participants with NH. On average, participants with SNHL and NH (in quiet and simulated SNHL) placed the greatest perceptual weight on components within the interaural time difference "dominance region," found previously to peak around 800 Hz [Folkerts and Stecker, J. Acoust. Soc. Am. 151, 3409-3425 (2022)]. In addition to the peak at 800 Hz, both participant groups (including NH participants in quiet) placed near equal weight on 400 Hz, resulting in a broadened "peak" in the dominance region, most likely due to the reduction of audibility to higher frequency components. However, individual weighting strategies were more variable across participants with SNHL than participants with NH. Metrics to be used in noise impact assessment must integrate the physical acoustic characteristics of the sound field with relevant biology of animals. Several metrics have been established to determine and regulate underwater noise exposure to aquatic fauna. However, recent advances in understanding cause-effect relationships indicate that additional metrics are needed to fully describe and quantify the impact of sound fields on aquatic fauna. Existing regulations have primarily focused on marine mammals and are based on the dichotomy of sound types as being either impulsive or non-impulsive. This classification of sound types, however, is overly simplistic and insufficient for adequate impact assessments of sound on animals. It is recommended that the definition of impulsiveness be refined by incorporating kurtosis as an additional parameter and applying an appropriate conversion factor. Auditory frequency weighting functions, which scale the importance of particular sound frequencies to account for an animal's sensitivity to those frequencies, should be applied. Minimum phase filters are recommended for calculating weighted sound pressure. Temporal observation windows should be reported as signal duration influences its detectability by animals. Small vessels (<10 m) radiate underwater noise in sensitive coastal environments, but there is insufficient knowledge of their noise radiation. Through detailed measurements of seven small boats and a jet ski in a shallow water environment on the Swedish west coast, this study presents results on the speed dependence of small vessel underwater noise, its sources, and its directivity. For vessels with planing hulls, broadband source levels increase with speed until planing is attained. When planing, source level dependence on speed is weak. A detailed noise source analysis of one vessel showed that at low speed, tonals from the engine dominate the noise radiation, whereas at higher speeds, propeller tonals and broadband noise dominate. Noise radiation into different horizontal angles shows little angle dependence, and noise levels relative to the closest point of approach show a similar pattern across all investigated vessels. The current interaction of pedestrian flow and environmental pollutants in high-occupancy public areas of apartment and the risks of residents being exposed to environmental pollutants are issues that are often overlooked but urgently need to be addressed. In this study, we provide a comprehensive of pedestrian flow-environmental pollutants interactions and health risks to residents in first-floor public areas of apartment with high-occupancy. The main findings indicate that under closed management conditions, there is a significant increase in TVOC and noise levels during the peak periods of nighttime pedestrian flow. In the correlation analysis, the significant impact of time granularity selection in clarifying the correlation between pedestrian flow and environmental pollutants has been highlighted, with larger time granularities generally showing stronger correlations, while finer time granularities may help identify specific risks in areas directly connected to the external environment. There is a significant correlation exists between pedestrian flow and environmental pollutants (TVOC, ozone, and noise), with higher concentrations of these pollutants observed during peak pedestrian flow periods, thereby increasing the risk of residents being exposed to adverse environmental conditions. To mitigate the risks associated with TVOC pollution and noise exposure, it is crucial to maintain proper ventilation, avoid conducting cleaning or maintenance activities during peak hours, and implement noise-reducing measures, such as distancing noise sources from residential areas or installing soundproofing barriers. Additionally, the study identifies total volatile organic compounds originating from property maintenance activities and clarifies their dispersion patterns, emphasizing the importance of developing robust, standardized maintenance protocols for indoor environmental quality assurance. With the development of the social economy, we are exposed to increasing noise in our daily lives. Our previous work found an ABCC1(NM&#95;004996.3:c.A1769G, NP&#95;004987.2:p.N590S) variant which cosegregated with the patients in an autosomal dominant non-syndromic hearing loss family. At present, the specific mechanism of deafness caused by ABCC1 mutation is still not clear. Using the knock-in mouse model simulating human ABCC1 mutation, we found that the occurrence of family-related phenotypes was likely attributed to the combination of the mouse genotype and low-intensity noise. GSH and GSSG are important physiological substrates of ABCC1. The destruction of GSH-GSSG balance in the cochleae of both Abcc1 N591S/+ mice and Abcc1 N591S/N591S mice during low-intensity noise exposure may result in irreversible damage to the hair cells of the cochleae, consequently leading to hearing loss in mice. The rise of operational noise as an environmental pollutant for farm animals is an emerging concern. The mechanisms through which music can alleviate oxidative stress, inflammation, and apoptosis induced by noise exposure remain underexplored. This study aims to investigate the alleviating effects and underlying mechanisms of long-term music exposure on noise-induced damage to the chicken spleen. Male Arbor Acres (AA) broilers were divided into four groups: control (C), acute noise stimulation (NS), noise stimulation with music mitigation (NSM), and music only (M). NS and NSM groups were exposed to noise (simulating sudden intensity noise, 115 to 120dB) for 10 minutes daily for a week, starting at 14-days-old. NSM and M groups then received 28 days of 6-hour daily music (Mozart K.448, 60-65 dB). The results showed that noise stimulation significantly activated the Keap-1/Nrf2 and NF-κB signaling pathways. Long-term music intervention has also been demonstrated to successfully mitigate oxidative stress and abnormal apoptosis induced by acute noise stimulation. Microscopic examination of the spleen revealed that acute noise stimulation resulted in an increase in splenic cells, a decrease in lymphocytes, and blurred boundaries between the red and white pulps in the NS group. However, these pathological changes were alleviated in the NSM group following music intervention. Compared with the control group, the NS group exhibited significantly elevated oxidative stress parameters. In contrast, music intervention in the NSM group notably improved antioxidant capacity and partially alleviated morphological abnormalities in the spleen. Additionally, noise stimulation activated the NF-κB pathway, upregulating the downstream genes of the inflammatory factors IL-1β, IL-6, and TNF-α. Noise-induced mitochondrial damage led to apoptosis, as observed by TUNEL staining, along with increased gene and protein expression of Bcl-2, Bax, Cyt-C, Casp-3, Casp-8, and Casp-9. These findings indicate that acute noise exposure can induce splenic damage via oxidative stress, inflammation, and apoptosis by modulating the Keap-1/Nrf2 and NF-κB pathways. Identifying key molecular pathways and genes involved in the response to urban pollutants is an important step in furthering our understanding of the impact of urbanisation on wildlife. The expansion of urban habitats and the associated human-introduced environmental changes are considered a global threat to the health and persistence of humans and wildlife. The present study experimentally investigates how short-term exposure to three urban-related pollutants -soot, artificial light at night (ALAN) and traffic noise-affects transcriptome-wide gene expression in livers from captive female zebra finches (Taeniopygia guttata). Compared to unexposed controls, 17, 52, and 28 genes were differentially expressed in soot, ALAN and noise-exposed birds, respectively. In soot-exposed birds, the enriched gene ontology (GO) terms were associated with a suppressed immune system such as interferon regulating genes (IRGs) and responses to external stimuli. For ALAN-exposed birds, enriched GO terms were instead based on downregulated genes associated with detoxification, redox, hormonal-, and metabolic processes. Noise exposure resulted in downregulation of genes associated with the GO terms: cellular responses to substances, catabolic and cytokine responses. Among the individually differentially expressed genes (DEGs), soot led to an increased expression of genes related to tumour progression. Likewise, ALAN revealed an upregulation of multiple genes linked to different cancer types. Both sensory pollutants (ALAN and noise) led to increased expression of genes linked to neuronal function. Interestingly, noise caused upregulation of genes associated with serotonin regulation and function (SLC6A4 and HTR7), which previous studies have shown to be under selection in urban birds. The detrimental effects of high-intensity noise on the auditory system and emotional status, including the induction of anxiety, are well documented. Preclinical as well as epidemiological and clinical studies have solidly established differential responses between males and females to various stressful stimuli, including high-intensity white noise (HIWN). However, whether chronic exposure to noise affects cognitive functions and whether this effect is sex dependent has not been adequately addressed. In this study, we used two cognitive test paradigms, such as the Morris water maze (MWM) and the multi-branch maze (MBM), to test the effect of chronic HIWN on indices of spatial learning and memory in both male and female Wistar rats. Our findings indicate that daily (1 h) exposure to 100 dB of noise for 30 consecutive days induces different task-dependent responses in male versus female rats. For example, in the acquisition phase of MWM, female rats exposed to noise outperformed their male counterparts at twice the speed. Similarly, in the MBM test, noise-exposed female rats outperformed the male rats in reaching the nest box. It is clear from these studies that noise impairs cognitive functions twice as negatively in male rats as in female rats. Objective: To investigate the prevalence of firework-associated fear in dogs in Sydney, owner perception of their dog's response to fireworks, perceived efficacy of interventions to manage fearful behaviours and the frequency of dog owners seeking professional advice for these behaviours., Methods: Dog owners in the Greater Sydney area were invited to complete an anonymous online survey., Results: From 387 valid responses, 44.4% (171 of 385) reported their dogs were fearful of fireworks. The most common fear-related behaviour was seeking an owner or caretaker (120 of 161, 74.5%). Most owners responded by bringing their dog inside or trying to comfort or reassure their dog. Only 22.5% of owners sought professional advice for their dog's fear of fireworks, but of these, 65.5% considered that advice to be effective. Source and breed group were significantly associated with fear of fireworks (P = 0.011, P = 0.036 respectively). Fear of fireworks was also significantly associated with fear of thunder (P < 0.0001), gunshots (P < 0.0001) and vehicles (P = 0.0009)., Conclusion: Fear of fireworks and other loud noises negatively impacts canine welfare, yet only a small percentage of owners sought professional advice. Auditory brainstem response (ABR) detection was performed to understand the hearing changes, and the modeling effect was evaluated using the GPIAS% inhibition experiment of auditory startle reflex. Morphological observation of the basement membrane was performed to determine whether the inner hair cells were damaged. Immunohistochemistry and immunofluorescence were used to determine the activation of microglia in the hippocampus of noise induced tinnitus mice. Finally, qPCR and Western Blot were used to detect the expression of TLR4, NF kB, NLRP3, caspase-1, and IL-1 β in the hippocampus of each group of mice. Through high-throughput data analysis, it was found that there was no significant difference in the auditory threshold of the three groups of mice; After 2 h of exposure to 100 dB SPL noise, the GPIAS% of mice decreased significantly compared to before exposure, and membrane construction was successful. After 7 days, the GPIAS% of the drug intervention group increased. After noise exposure, mice developed tinnitus, and hippocampus neuroinflammation. This study investigated the number of operator errors, task completion time, and workload of subjects at different levels by imposing conditions such as focused text boldness, noise disturbance, and time pressure to simulate a realistic cloud change business process in the laboratory. Results of the study showed that the text bolding of important content reduced the number of errors, whereas noise interference increased the number of errors. Text boldness only reduced the number of corrected errors, and noise interference only increased the number of uncorrected errors. Moreover, bolding was found to have different effects on the number of errors under different noise levels and time pressure levels, with text boldness significantly reducing the number of total errors only in quiet or low time pressure states. Time pressure had no effect on cloud change task error counts, but high time pressure resulted in higher subjective workload.

Purpose: Hoarseness and voice problems are one of the chronic conditions experienced by children. The aim of this study was to investigate the prevalence of hoarseness, possible risk factors and effects of the remediation of school buildings to the prevalence of hoarseness among school children. Methods: The material was gathered from all the schools in a large city in the south of Finland and the collection method used was an e-mail survey sent to the parents of the pupils and a simultaneous survey sent to the personnel in the schools. Results: All 51 schools participated, and 5889 pupils returned the questionnaire (39%). The exposure data was obtained from two building experts who knew the repair history of the schools. A subjective estimation of the quality of the indoor air was obtained from teachers and the parents. The overall prevalence of hoarseness among pupils was 6.3%; prevalence being higher in unrepaired school buildings than in schools in a good condition or buildings with a thorough remediation. Hoarseness was associated with asthma and allergies, several respiratory symptoms, and respiratory infections. Exposure to tobacco smoke increased the risk, and consumption of caffeine containing drinks seemed to reduce the risk. Noise, stuffiness of the indoor air and microbial smells correlated strongly with the occurrence of hoarseness in a logistic regression model when controlled for age, gender, asthma, passive smoking, and caffeine consumption. Conclusions: We recommend renovations in school buildings with the aim of providing better acoustics, sufficient ventilation, and a reduction in exposure to moisture damage microbes.

Noise-induced hidden hearing loss (HHL) is a newly uncovered form of hearing impairment that causes hidden damage to the cochlea. Patients with HHL do not have significant abnormalities in their hearing thresholds, but they experience impaired speech recognition in noisy environments. However, the mechanisms underlying HHL remain unclear. In this study, we developed single-cell transcriptome profiles of the cochlea of mice with HHL, detailing changes in individual cell types. Our study revealed a transient threshold shift, reduced auditory brainstem response wave I amplitude, and decreased number of ribbon synapses in HHL mice. Our findings suggest elevated oxidative stress and GDF15 expression in cochlear hair cells of HHL mice. Notably, the upregulation of GDF15 attenuated oxidative stress and auditory impairment in the cochlea of HHL mice. Musicians are at risk of hearing loss and tinnitus due to regular exposure to high levels of noise. This level of risk may have been underestimated previously since damage to the auditory system, such as cochlear synaptopathy, may not be easily detectable using standard clinical measures. Most previous research investigating hearing loss in musicians has involved cross-sectional study designs that may capture only a snapshot of hearing health in relation to noise exposure. The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of cumulative noise exposure on behavioural, electrophysiological, and self-report indices of hearing damage in early-career musicians and non-musicians with normal hearing over a 2-year period. Participants completed an annual test battery consisting of pure tone audiometry, extended high-frequency hearing thresholds, distortion product otoacoustic emissions (DPOAEs), speech perception in noise, auditory brainstem responses, and self-report measures of tinnitus, hyperacusis, and hearing in background noise. Participants also completed the Noise Exposure Structured Interview to estimate cumulative noise exposure across the study period. Linear mixed models assessed changes over time. The longitudinal analysis comprised 64 early-career musicians (female n = 34; age range at T0 = 18-26 years) and 30 non-musicians (female n = 20; age range at T0 = 18-27 years). There were few longitudinal changes as a result of musicianship. Small improvements over time in some measures may be attributable to a practice/test-retest effect. Some measures (e.g., DPOAE indices of outer hair cell function) were associated with noise exposure at each time point, but did not show a significant change over time. A small proportion of participants reported a worsening of their tinnitus symptoms, which participants attributed to noise exposure, or not using hearing protection. Future longitudinal studies should attempt to capture the effects of noise exposure over a longer period, taken at several time points, for a precise measure of how hearing changes over time. Hearing conservation programmes for "at risk" individuals should closely monitor DPOAEs to detect early signs of noise-induced hearing loss when audiometric thresholds are clinically normal., (Copyright © 2024 The Author(s). Speech-in-noise (SIN) perception is a fundamental ability that declines with aging, as does general cognition. We assess whether auditory cognitive ability, in particular short-term memory for sound features, contributes to both. We examined how auditory memory for fundamental sound features, the carrier frequency and amplitude modulation rate of modulated white noise, contributes to SIN perception. We assessed SIN in 153 healthy participants with varying degrees of hearing loss using measures that require single-digit perception (the Digits-in-Noise, DIN) and sentence perception (Speech-in-Babble, SIB). Independent variables were auditory memory and a range of other factors including the Pure Tone Audiogram (PTA), a measure of dichotic pitch-in-noise perception (Huggins pitch), and demographic variables including age and sex. Multiple linear regression models were compared using Bayesian Model Comparison. The best predictor model for DIN included PTA and Huggins pitch (r 2 = 0.32, p < 0.001), whereas the model for SIB included the addition of auditory memory for sound features (r 2 = 0.24, p < 0.001). Further analysis demonstrated that auditory memory also explained a significant portion of the variance (28 %) in scores for a screening cognitive test for dementia. Auditory masking methods originally employed to assess behavioral frequency selectivity have evolved over the years to infer cochlear tuning. Behavioral forward masking thresholds for spectrally notched noise maskers and a fixed, low-level probe tone provide accurate estimates of cochlear tuning. Here, we use this method to investigate the effect of stimulus duration on human cochlear tuning at 500 Hz and 4 kHz. Probes were 20-ms sinusoids at 10 dB sensation level. Maskers were noises with a spectral notch symmetrically and asymmetrically placed around the probe frequency. For seven participants with normal hearing, masker levels at masking threshold were measured in forward masking for various notch widths and for masker durations of 30 and 400 ms. Measurements were fitted assuming rounded exponential filter shapes and the power spectrum model of masking, and equivalent rectangular bandwidths (ERBs) were inferred from the fits. At 4 kHz, masker thresholds were higher for the shorter maskers but ERBs were not significantly different for the two masker durations (ERB 30ms =294 Hz vs. ERB 400ms =277 Hz). At 500 Hz, by contrast, notched-noise curves were shallower for the 30-ms than the 400-ms masker, and ERBs were significantly broader for the shorter masker (ERB 30ms =126 Hz vs. ERB 400ms =55 Hz). We discuss possible factors that may underlay the duration effect at low frequencies and argue that it may not be possible to fully control for those factors. Background: Newborns are exposed to varying degrees of stressful interventions due to procedures such as heel lancing used in routine metabolic screenings. It is an examination of the effects of white noise and kangaroo care on some physiological parameters and stress markers (cortisol and glucose-regulated protein 78-GRP78) in heel lancing in newborns., Methods: Randomized controlled study was conducted at a gynecology service of a hospital between January and September 2023. 90 babies were divided into three groups: 30 babies in the Kangaroo Care Group (KCG), 30 babies in the White Music Group (WMG), and 30 babies in the Control Group (CG). All babies were randomly divided into groups. Stress parameters were measured by saliva collection method and physiological parameters by saturation device., Results: A statistically significant difference was determined between the total crying time, pulse and saturation values ​​according to the groups (p < 0.001; p = 0.001). A statistically significant difference was determined between the mean values ​​of cortisol and GRP78 measurements according to group and time interaction (p < 0.001). KCG was more effective in reducing total crying time and stabilizing pulse, saturation, salivary cortisol, GRP-78 values compared to WNG and CG., Conclusion: It was concluded that white noise and kangaroo care help reduce newborns' stress in the case of heel lancing., Practical Implications: The practice of kangaroo care and the use of white noise methods may assist healthcare professionals as supportive methods in stress management during invasive procedures., Trial Registration: NCT06278441, registered on 19/02/2024., (© 2024. Background: Noise in the operating room has been shown to distract the surgical team and to be associated with postoperative complications. It is, however, unclear whether complications after noisy operations are the result of objective or subjective surgical difficulty or the consequence of distraction of the operating room team by noise., Methods: Noise level measurements were prospectively performed during operations in four Swiss hospitals. Objective difficulty for each operation was calculated based on surgical magnitude as suggested by the Physiological and Operative Severity Score for the enUmeration of Mortality and Morbidity (POSSUM), duration of operation and surgical approach. Subjective difficulty and distraction were evaluated by a questionnaire filled out by the operating room team members. Complications were assessed 30 days after surgery. Using regression analyses, the relationship between objective and subjective difficulty, distraction, intraoperative noise and postoperative complications was tested., Results: Postoperative complications occurred after 121 (38%) of the 294 procedures included. Noise levels were significantly higher in operations that were objectively and subjectively more difficult (59.89 versus 58.35 dB(A), P < 0.001) and operations that resulted in postoperative complications (59.05 versus 58.77 dB(A), P = 0.004). Multivariable regression analyses revealed that subjective difficulty as reported by all members of the surgical team, but not distraction, was highly associated with noise and complications. Only objective surgical difficulty independently predicted noise and postoperative complications., Conclusion: Noise in the operating room is a surrogate of surgical difficulty and thereby predicts postoperative complications., (© The Author(s) 2024. Macrophages serve as the primary immune cell population and assume a pivotal role in the immune response within the damaged cochleae. Yet, the origin and role of macrophages in response to noise exposure remain controversial. Here, we take advantage of Ccr2 RFP/+ Cx3cr1 GFP/+ dual-reporter mice to identify the infiltrated and tissue-resident macrophages. After noise exposure, we reveal that activated resident macrophages change in morphology, increase in abundance, and migrate to the region of hair cells, leading to the loss of outer hair cells and the damage of ribbon synapses. Meanwhile, peripheral monocytes are not implicated in the noise-induced hair cell insults. These noise-induced activities of macrophages are abolished by inhibiting TLR4 signaling, resulting in alleviated insults of hair cells and partial recovery of hearing. Our findings indicate cochlear resident macrophages are pro-inflammatory and detrimental players in acoustic trauma and introduce a potential therapeutic target in noise-induced hearing loss., (© 2024. Differences in acoustic environments have previously been linked to socioeconomic status (SES). However, it is crucial to acknowledge that cultural values can also play a significant role in shaping acoustic environments. The goal of this study was to investigate if social behaviors related to cultural heritage and SES could help us understand how Latinx and European college students in the U.S. have different acoustic environments. College students were given digital recorders to record their daily acoustic environments for two days. These recordings were used to (1) evaluate nearfield noise levels in their natural surroundings and (2) quantify the percentage of time participants spent on behavioral collectivistic activities such as socializing and interacting with others. Behavioral collectivism was examined as a mediator between cultural heritage, SES, and nearfield noise levels. Findings revealed that both SES and cultural heritage were associated with nearfield noise levels. However, behavioral collectivism mediated the relationship between culture and nearfield noise levels. These findings show that collectivist cultural norms significantly relate to Latinx' daily noise levels. In listening tests of noise annoyance, subjects act as "measuring instruments". Noise annoyance of different subjects induced by a same noise sample, or noise annoyance of a same subject induced by a same noise sample in different experimental groups, are different due to the varying psychological scale of subjects. To unify subjects' psychological scale and accurately determine perceived annoyance, it is necessary to investigate the optimal noise annoyance data calibration method. Based on the master scale transformation, three kinds of annoyance data calibration methods, i.e., individual annoyance data calibration, sound sample annoyance data calibration, and a combination of both methods, were explored. The effectiveness of three methods for unifying subjects' psychological scale was ascertained. Results showed that the individual annoyance data calibration was the most effective among the three calibration methods. After calibration, the difference between annoyance induced by a same sound sample in any two different experimental sound sample groups declined significantly. The determination coefficient of the fitting curve between psychoacoustic annoyance and perceived annoyance, R2, upgraded significantly. In order to develop effective strategies to address noise annoyance, it is essential to develop an explanatory model of the psychological mechanism(s) by which noise becomes annoying. Two online studies were conducted in which a total of 193 participants completed speech perception tasks with varying degrees of background noise. Signal-to-noise ratio levels ranged from -2 to -10 dB. The crucial manipulation in both experiments concerned participants' sense of control over the noise level in the task. Dependent measures were task performance, a self-reported measure of frustration with the task, and self-reported sensitivity (trait) to noise. Results showed small but significant effects of noise sensitivity and sense of control on subjective frustration. In both experiments, more noise-sensitive individuals expressed greater frustration than did those reporting less noise sensitivity. In addition, in experiment 2 there was a significant interaction between sense of control and noise level. Listeners under the higher noise-level conditions expressed relatively similar degrees of frustration irrespective of their sense of control, while those under the lower noise-level condition showed lower frustration with greater sense of control. Results support Stallen's [(1999). Understanding how the environment mediates an organism's ability to meet basic survival requirements is a fundamental goal of ecology. Vessel noise is a global threat to marine ecosystems and is increasing in intensity and spatiotemporal extent due to growth in shipping coupled with physical changes to ocean soundscapes from ocean warming and acidification. Odontocetes rely on biosonar to forage, yet determining the consequences of vessel noise on foraging has been limited by the challenges of observing underwater foraging outcomes and measuring noise levels received by individuals. To address these challenges, we leveraged a unique acoustic and movement dataset from 25 animal-borne biologging tags temporarily attached to individuals from two populations of fish-eating killer whales (Orcinus orca) in highly transited coastal waters to (1) test for the effects of vessel noise on foraging behaviors-searching (slow-click echolocation), pursuit (buzzes), and capture and (2) investigate the mechanism of interference. For every 1 dB increase in maximum noise level, there was a 4% increase in the odds of searching for prey by both sexes, a 58% decrease in the odds of pursuit by females and a 12.5% decrease in the odds of prey capture by both sexes. Moreover, all but one deep (≥75 m) foraging attempt with noise ≥110 dB re 1 μPa (15-45 kHz band; n = 6 dives by n = 4 whales) resulted in failed prey capture. These responses are consistent with an auditory masking mechanism. Our findings demonstrate the effects of vessel noise across multiple phases of odontocete foraging, underscoring the importance of managing anthropogenic inputs into soundscapes to achieve conservation objectives for acoustically sensitive species. While the timescales for recovering depleted prey species may span decades, these findings suggest that complementary actions to reduce ocean noise in the short term offer a critical pathway for recovering odontocete foraging opportunities., (© 2024 His Majesty the King in Right of Canada and The Author(s). A speech intelligibility (SI) prediction model is proposed that includes an auditory preprocessing component based on the physiological anatomy and activity of the human ear, a hierarchical spiking neural network, and a decision back-end processing based on correlation analysis. The auditory preprocessing component effectively captures advanced physiological details of the auditory system, such as retrograde traveling waves, longitudinal coupling, and cochlear nonlinearity. The ability of the model to predict data from normal-hearing listeners under various additive noise conditions was considered. The predictions closely matched the experimental test data under all conditions. Furthermore, we developed a lumped mass model of a McGee stainless-steel piston with the middle-ear to study the recovery of individuals with otosclerosis. We show that the proposed SI model accurately simulates the effect of middle-ear intervention on SI. Consequently, the model establishes a model-based relationship between objective measures of human ear damage, like distortion product otoacoustic emissions, and speech perception. Moreover, the SI model can serve as a robust tool for optimizing parameters and for preoperative assessment of artificial stimuli, providing a valuable reference for clinical treatments of conductive hearing loss., (© 2024 Acoustical Society of America.)
