Abstract

Over the last decade new voluntary mapping patterns are commonly known as VGI – Volunteered Geographic Information – that is, geo-localized information created voluntarily and consciously by web users. These are supported by platforms such as OpenStreetMap that have been shown in many emergency cases and not, a valid source of data, such detailed to be used for rescue operations. Another completely open source platform that has revolutionized the world of geographic information and how to make reports is Ushaidi that through interactive maps represents testimonies, reports, diaries, and citizen reports.

7. VIBRATIONS OF A CANTILEVER TAPERED BEAM WITH VARYING SECTION PROPERTIES AND CARRYING A MASS AT THE FREE END

Abstract

The free vibration frequencies of a beam composed of two tapered beam sections with different physical characteristics with a mass at its end can be determined by using either the exact procedure, for which purpose the solution to the problem can be expressed using Bessel functions, or the approximate Rayleigh–Ritz treatment, with the assumption of orthogonal polynomials as test functions. The results and the numerical comparison between the two methods are provided in diagrams and tables. The effect of different materials on vibrations modes is also provided.

Abstract

The use of plastic materials in agriculture involves several benefits but it results in huge quantities of agricultural plastic waste to be disposed of. Input and output data on the use of plastics in agriculture are often difficult to obtain and poor waste management schemes have been developed. The present research aims to estimate and map agricultural plastic waste by using satellite images. Waste was evaluated by means of the indexes relating waste production to crop type and plastic application as defined by the land use map realized by classifying the Landsat 8 image. The image classification was carried out using Support Vector Machines (SVMs), and the accuracy assessment showed that the overall accuracy was 94.54% and the kappa coefficient equal to 0.934. Data on the plastic waste obtained by the satellite land use map were compared with the data obtained by using the institutional land use map; a difference of 1.74% was identified on the overall quantity of waste.

Abstract

Dry skin and moisturization are important topics because they impact the lives of many individuals. For most individuals, dry skin is not a notable concern and can be adequately managed with current moisturizing products. However, dry skin can affect the quality of life of some individuals because of the challenges of either harsh environmental conditions or impaired stratum corneum (SC) dry skin protection processes resulting from various common skin diseases. Dry skin protection processes of the SC, such as the development of natural moisturizing factor (NMF), are complex, carefully balanced, and easily perturbed. We discuss the importance of the filaggrin-NMF system and the composition of NMF in both healthy and dry skin, and also reveal new insights that suggest the properties required for a new generation of moisturizing technologies.

Abstract

Cumulative exposure to ultraviolet radiation (UVR) increases the risk of developing skin cancer, particularly squamous cell carcinoma and basal cell carcinoma. Thus, the need for protection from the sun is widely advocated, but consumers generally associate such protection with the occasional extreme exposure and tend to ignore the risk of long-term exposure. In fact, a sun exposure model predicts that over a lifetime, a person will receive tens of thousands of minimal erythema doses worth of UVR through normal, daily, incidental exposure. The cumulative effect of casual sun exposure over the years underscores the need for everyday basic UVR protection in which even low level (SPF 4-10) sunscreens are shown to offer significant benefit. Analysis shows that daily protection can reduce lifetime exposure by 50% or more.
