Field studies suggest that NO3− photolysis may play a more significant role than previously thought. In this study, we concurrently measured HONO, NO2, and NO2− in situ to gain a deeper understanding of the photogenerated HONO transfer to air and to better constrain the rate constants of NO3− photolysis. The presence of fatty acids (e.g., nonanoic acid, NA), which are naturally present in the environment, significantly increases the production of photogenerated HONO and NO2. With an increase in oxygen percentage, the release rate of photoinduced HONO slowed, while the release rate of NO2 accelerated. The measured J N O 3 − value averaged 1.65 × 10−5 s−1, which is two orders of magnitude higher than values reported in similar systems. The HONO transfer rate from the solutions increased from 2.3 × 10−4 s−1 to 5.6 × 10−4 s−1 as the NA concentration increased from 0.1 to 20 mM. This can be attributed to the accumulation of NO2− induced by NA at the interface. Within this interfacial region, NO2− in the solutions becomes more prone to transfer into gaseous HONO, suggesting that photogenerated NO2− hosted in atmospheric droplets may serve as a temporary reservoir of atmospheric HONO without illumination, influencing the atmospheric oxidizing capacity in the region for hours. Therefore, simultaneous measurements of both gas and particle phase photoproducts are recommended to better constrain the rate constants of NO3− photolysis, thereby enhancing the accuracy of predicting the photochemical production of HONO in the atmosphere. AbstractA new method for separating and concentrating Rhodamine B (RhB) in cosmetics has been developed using nonanoic acid liquid-phase microextraction (NA-LPmE) with spectrophotometric determination. Nonanoic acid is a novel and environmentally friendly extractant that was used as a single component in the isolation. In contrast, supramolecular solvents and deep eutectic solvents are often combined as a mixture. The method is simple, quick, accurate, and environmentally friendly. The appropriate parameters (the volume of NA, pH, sample volume, and matrix effects) were optimized and these conditions resulted in a suitable linear range (20.5–1000 µg L−1), low detection limit (6.2 µg L−1), and high pre-concentration factor (40). The NA-LPmE method successfully extracted and determined RhB in several cosmetics and employs a small volume of green solvent with spectrophotometric determination and rapid analysis. Cyanobacterial blooms (HCBs) in water bodies adversely affect aquatic ecosystems. In laboratory experiments, metabolites-allelochemicals of aquatic macrophytes, nonanoic – a monobasic saturated and palmitoleic – an Omega-7 monounsaturated fatty acids effectively inhibit the development of cyanobacteria Synechocystis aquatilis Sauvageau, strain No. 1336 of CALU (Collection of Algae of Leningrad University). In contrast to palmitoleic acid (Suppression Index (SI) within 3.5), nonanoic acid at the highest tested concentrations of 1–1.8 mg/l (SI above 20) had more pronounced effect. Nonanoic acid can be referred to an algaecide of a new generation based on aquatic macrophyte metabolites to prevent and attenuate HCBs.

Large molecules of dyes or other substances can act as nano-adsorbents in aqueous surfactant solutions and, being coated with surfactant molecules, they resemble surfactant micelles with a solubilizate. These micelle-like particles were called protomicelles (or, more precisely, adsorption protomicelles, as in this paper). Their formation does not require a critical micelle concentration (CMC) and begins immediately when a surfactant is added to a solution. In this spectrophotometric study of Nile red (NR) in aqueous solutions of nonanoic acid (NOA), the first case where protomicelles were more important than micelles was demonstrated. It was shown that NR solubilization in both premicellar and micellar solutions proceeds through protomicelles rather than through NOA micelles. In the theoretical part of the paper, on the basis of the chemical potential of the nano-adsorbent, it was proved that the addition of a surfactant to a solution always increases the solubility of the nano-adsorbent. The dependence of adsorption on the curvature of the nano-adsorbent surface was considered, and it was shown that the adsorption equations for flat surfaces are applicable to curved surfaces with high accuracy. Abstract Background Capsaicinoids are produced by plants in the Capsicum genus and are the main reason for the pungency of chili pepper fruits. They are strong agonists of TRPV1 (the transient receptor potential cation channel subfamily V member 1) and used as active ingredients in pharmaceuticals for the treatment of pain. The use of bioengineered microorganisms in a fermentation process may be an efficient route for their preparation, as well as for the discovery of (bio-)synthetic capsaicinoids with improved or novel bioactivities. Results Saccharomyces cerevisiae was engineered to over-express a selection of amide-forming N-acyltransferase and CoA-ligase enzyme cascades using a combinatorial gene assembly method, and was screened for nonivamide production from supplemented vanillylamine and nonanoic acid. Data from this work demonstrate that Tyramine N-hydroxycinnamoyl transferase from Capsicum annuum (CaAT) was most efficient for nonivamide formation in yeast, outcompeting the other candidates including AT3 (Pun1) from Capsicum spp. The CoA-ligase partner with highest activity from the ones evaluated here were from Petunia hybrida (PhCL) and Spingomonas sp. Ibu-2 (IpfF). A yeast strain expressing CaAT and IpfF produced 10.6 mg L−1 nonivamide in a controlled bioreactor setup, demonstrating nonivamide biosynthesis by S. cerevisiae for the first time. Conclusions Baker’s yeast was engineered for production of nonivamide as a model capsaicinoid, by expressing N-acyltransferases and CoA-ligases of plant and bacterial origin. The constructed yeast platform holds potential for in vivo biocatalytic formation of capsaicinoids and could be a useful tool for the discovery of novel drugs.

An amphiphilic conjugate of carboxymethyl xylan-nonanoic acid (CX-NA) was synthesized with molecular weight of 38.35 kDa, HLB value of 13.59, and critical micelle concentration of 23.17 μg/ml. CX-NA could efficiently encapsulate the model drug of 10-hydroxycamptothecin (HCPT). The drug loaded amphiphilic conjugate could self-assembled to micelles with an average diameter of 110 nm, zeta potential of −42.88 mV, and drug encapsulation efficiency of 79.8%. In vitro experiments confirmed that the drug-loaded micelles exhibited excellent stability and permeability in the intestinal environment. Transport pathway demonstrated that HCPT was uptake by cells through clathrin-mediated endocytosis. Intestinal in situ absorption study further confirmed CX-NA vehicle could enhance HPCT to transport across intestinal epithelial cells in colonic tissues. Furthermore, the formulation showed excellent anti-tumor activity in vitro and improved bioavailability of 3.4 times in vivo as comparing with free HCPT. In onions (Allium cepa) few herbicides are registered. Due to their erect leaf and plant structure, onions retain less herbicide after spraying than broadleaved weeds. Further, onion plants have a thicker plant cuticle. These differences allow a selective use of pelargonic acid in onions. The main aim of this study was to determine the selective dose at different crop growth stages. Five field trials were carried out. Three pelargonic acid containing products (1 SL- and 2 EC-formulations) were applied with a logarithmic sprayer. Dose range was 0 to 56 kg active substance (a.s.) ha-1. The growth stage varied between BBCH 10 and 16. Selectivity was rated visually. The products were selective at 7.2 and 8.3 kg a.s. ha-1 (BBCH 10-11), 6.1 and 8.9 kg a.s. ha-1 (BBCH 11-12), 8.5 and 20.7 kg a.s. ha-1 (BBCH 13) and 6.3 and 9.0 kg a.s. ha-1 (BBCH 14-16) for the SL- and EC-products respectively. Selectivity depended on growth stage and weather conditions. Important for selectivity is an intact cuticle, a rain-free, light-intense period before application. Pelargonic acid could become a component for sustainable weed control in onions. Due to its foliar activity, small weeds need to be targeted and several passes are required.

The context of the peer review was that required by Commission Implementing Regulation (EU) No 844/2012, as amended by Commission Implementing Regulation (EU) No 2018/1659. The conclusions were reached on the basis of the evaluation of the representative use of pelargonic acid as a herbicide on vineyards, potatoes, paths and places with woody plants, ornamental shrubs, ornamentals lawn, home gardens and allotments, paths and open areas with tree growth, woody ornamentals, decorative lawns, turf (field use). The reliable end points appropriate for use in regulatory risk assessment are presented. Assessments not finalised and missing information identified as being required by the regulatory framework are listed.

During potato desiccation the above-ground parts can be destroyed by mechanical, mechanical-chemical, or chemical methods. In the current study, the mechanical-chemical method was used and instead of chemical compounds natural nonanoic acid (pelargonic acid) was used. Nonanoic acid is a natural active ingredient that can be extracted from vegetable oil (rapeseed oil). It is a short chain fatty acid and a natural product, that fits well with the principles of the Green Revolution, which has introduced restrictions worldwide on the use of chemical plant protection products and promotes natural ones. For comparison carfentrazone-ethyl and glufosinate-ammonium were used. Studies were carried out in Poland during 2012–2014 with the potato variety Ikar, which is known to be among the varieties difficult to desicccate in Poland. The results show that potato leaves were efficiently destroyed by both nonanoic acid and chemicals (carfentrazone-ethyl and glufosinate-ammonium). The level of destruction varied from 94.5% to 99%. The level of stalk drying caused by nonanoic acid was high and it was similar to that of chemical desiccants. None of the studied desiccants significantly affected yield, vascular necrosis or quantity of starch in tubers.

Natural phytotoxic compounds could become an alternative to traditional herbicides in the framework of sustainable agriculture. Nonanoic acid, sarmentine and sorgoleone are such molecules extracted from plants and able to inhibit the growth of various plant species. However, their mode of action is not fully understood and despite clues indicating that they could affect the plant plasma membrane, molecular details of such phenomenon are lacking. In this paper, we investigate the interactions between those natural herbicides and artificial bilayers mimicking the plant plasma membrane. First, their ability to affect lipid order and fluidity is evaluated by means of fluorescence measurements. It appears that sorgoleone has a clear ordering effect on lipid bilayers, while nonanoic acid and sarmentine induce no or little change to these parameters. Then, a thermodynamic characterization of interactions of each compound with lipid vesicles is obtained with isothermal titration calorimetry, and their respective affinity for bilayers is found to be ranked as follows: sorgoleone > sarmentine > nonanoic acid. Finally, molecular dynamics simulations give molecular details about the location of each compound within a lipid bilayer and confirm the rigidifying effect of sorgoleone. Data also suggest that mismatch in alkyl chain length between nonanoic acid or sarmentine and lipid hydrophobic tails could be responsible for bilayer destabilization. Natural products with antimycobacterial adjuvant potential may be utilized to address the rise of multidrug-resistant tuberculosis (TB). The antioxidant-rich oil palm (Elaeis guineensis) fruit (OPF) was investigated for antimycobacterial activity against Mycobacterium tuberculosis (MTB) H37Ra using bio-guided fractionation techniques, followed by determination of fractional inhibition index (FIC) with first-line anti-TB drugs. In vitro screening using microplate Alamar blue assay showed n-hexane and chloroform partitions of OPF mesocarp had a minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) of 400–800 µg/mL. The n-hexane fraction contained nonanoic acid (C9H18O2), decanoic acid (C10H20O2), and dodecanoic acid (C12H24O2), identified by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry, which all had an MIC of 50 µg/mL. Nonanoic and decanoic acids had additive effects when combined with streptomycin (FIC index: 0.625) and rifampicin (FIC index: 0.75), respectively. Isoniazid had a 16-fold increase in activity when combined with nonanoic acid and decanoic acid. The combination of nonanoic acid with streptomycin was bactericidal to 99.9% of MTB H37Ra by Day 7 of the time-kill assay, with structural damage of the cell wall observed using electron microscopy. Cytotoxicity assessment using Vero cells confirmed nonanoic acid had low toxicity with LC50 of > 200 µg/mL. The bio-guided fractionation of OPF shows the presence of fatty acids with anti-TB adjuvant potential.

Capsaicinoids are mostly derived from chili peppers and have widespread applications in food, feed, and pharmacology. Compared with plant extraction, the use of microbial cell factories for capsaicinoids production is considered as a more efficient approach. Here, the biotransformation of renewable plant oil and vanillylamine into capsaicinoid nonivamide was investigated. Nonivamide biosynthesis using nonanoic acid and vanillylamine as substrates was achieved in Escherichia coli by heterologous expression of genes encoding amide-forming N -acyltransferase and CoA-ligase. Through increasing nonanoic acid tolerance of chassis cell, screening key enzymes involved in nonivamide biosynthesis and optimizing biotransformation conditions, the nonivamide titer reached 0.5 g/L. By further integrating a route for conversion of oleic acid to nonanoic acid, nonivamide biosynthesis was finally achieved using olive oil and vanillylamine as substrates, yielding a titer of approximately 10.7 mg/L. Considering the need of applicability of green chemistry in research, a series of heterogeneous catalysts, viz., sulfated iron oxide, zirconia supported tungstophosphoric acid and sulfated zirconia have been synthesized by a solvent-free method. The prepared catalysts were used in the esterification of nonanoic acid with methanol and were compared with ion exchange resins for the assessment of their catalytic performance. Sulfated iron oxide was found to be best with an acid conversion of 83%, which is quite comparable with Amberlyst 15 and Dowex50Wx2. The high catalyst loading, cost, low thermal stability, and long reaction time make ion exchange resins uneconomical to use over other alternatives that result in same efficiency with low cost. Sulfated iron oxide was further optimized for its preparation conditions for high catalytic performance in the esterification reaction. The catalysts were characterized for their crystallinity, surface morphology, composition, weight loss, and structure by X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, thermogravimetric analysis, and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. The evaluated catalysts were compared on the basis of their preparation time, catalytic performance, catalyst loading, reaction time, and overall cost.

Greater than 65% of canola and high-oleic soy oil fatty acids is oleic acid, which is readily converted to nonanoic (NA) and azelaic (AzA) acids by ozonolysis. NA is an excellent substrate for medium-chain-length polyhydroxyalkanoate (mcl-PHA) production but AzA has few uses. Pseudomonas citronellolis DSM 50332 and Pseudomonas fluorescens ATCC 17400, both able to produce mcl-PHA from fatty acids and to grow on AzA as the sole source of carbon and energy, were assessed for the accumulation of mcl-PHA from AzA and NA. In N-limited shake flasks using NA, P. citronellolis produced 32% of its dry biomass as mcl-PHA containing 78% 3-hydroxynonanoate with 22% 3-hydroxyheptanoate. Pseudomonas fluorescens produced only 2% PHA. N-limited P. citronellolis on AzA produced 20% dry weight PHA containing 75% 3-hydroxydecanoate and 25% 3-hydroxyoctanoate, indicative of de novo synthesis. Although selective pressure, including β-oxidation inhibition, under well-controlled (chemostat) conditions was applied to P. citronellolis, no side-chain carboxyl groups were detected. It was concluded that one or more of FabG and PhaJ or the PHA synthase cannot catalyze reactions involving ω-carboxy substrates. To satisfy the application demands for latent heat storage in the temperature range from 5°C to 15°C, an original composite phase change material (PCM), CA-NA/EG (caprylic-nonanoic acid/expanded graphite), was prepared and characterized. For CA-NA/EG, the mass ratio of CA and NA was 8:2, and the mass percentage of the CA-NA in CA-NA/EG composite PCM was determined as 90% by leakage test. The melting and freezing points of the CA-NA/EG were 6.84°C and 9.34°C, and corresponding latent heats were 108.75 kJ/kg and 107.67 kJ/kg. In addition, its thermal conductivity, thermal stability and reliability were investigated by thermal conductivity apparatus (TCA), thermal gravimetric analyzer (TGA), and accelerated thermal cycle test for 100 melt/freeze cycles, respectively. The results showed that the CA-NA/EG had a good thermal stability and an excellent thermal reliability. Moreover, the thermal conductivity of CA-NA/EG had an improvement of 25% than that of the CA-NA. On the other hand, the accelerated thermal cycle test also indicated that the CA-NA/EG had no supercooling during all melt/freeze cycles. Therefore, the prepared composite PCM, CA-NA/EG, can be applied for low-temperature thermal energy storage owing to its proper melting temperature, acceptable latent heat and thermal conductivity, excellent thermal stability and reliability. The thermal properties of caprylic acid, nonanoic acid and their binary system were investigated by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). The phase diagram for the binary system was constructed, and the experiment results showed that the eutectic temperature and the molar fraction of caprylic acid for the eutectic mixture are 1.83 °C and 0.483, respectively. To satisfy the application demands of the temperature scope from 5 °C to 15 °C, another binary mixture for the binary system with a molar fraction of 0.814 for caprylic acid component is found successfully, and it has good thermal properties that the melting temperature and the latent heat are 7.6 °C and 123 J g −1 , respectively. What is more, the latent heat and melting temperature for the binary mixture do not change at all nearly after being cycled 100 times during the whole melting process. Background: Thymic stromal lymphopoietin (TSLP) plays critical roles in the induction and exacerbation of allergic diseases. We tested various chemicals in the environment and found that xylene and 1,2,4-trimethylbenzene induced the production of TSLP in vivo. These findings prompted us to search for additional chemicals that induce TSLP production. In this study, we examined whether fatty acids could induce the production of TSLP in vivo and exacerbate allergic inflammation. Methods: Various fatty acids and related compounds were painted on the ear lobes of mice and the amount of TSLP in the homogenate of ear lobe tissue was determined. The effects of nonanoic acid on allergic inflammation were also examined. Results: Octanoic acid, nonanoic acid, and decanoic acid markedly induced TSLP production, while a medium-chain aldehyde and alcohol showed only weak activity. Nonanoic acid induced the production of TSLP with a maximum at 24 h. TSLP production was even observed in nonanoic acid-treated C3H/HeJ mice that lacked functional toll-like receptor 4. The aryl hydrocarbon receptor agonist β-naphthoflavone did not induce TSLP production. Nonanoic acid promoted sensitization to ovalbumin, resulting in an enhancement in the cutaneous anaphylactic response. In addition, painting of nonanoic acid after the sensitization augmented picryl chloride-induced thickening of the ear, which was reversed in TSLP receptor-deficient mice. Conclusions: Nonanoic acid and certain fatty acids induced TSLP production, resulting in the exacerbation of allergic inflammation. We propose that TSLP-inducing chemical compounds such as nonanoic acid be recognized as chemical allergo-accelerators.
